Wednesday – Brooklyn Steel – January 25, 2024

A week into their new American tour, Asheville, N.C., rock five-piece Wednesday sold out Brooklyn Steel on Thursday night, putting on a thrilling show. And as an added bonus, dynamic singer-guitarist Karly Hartzman sat in on the final song of Hotline TNT’s opening set.

Nineteen in Love (2021), Cartwheel (2023), Hotline TNT

As the music world enters a new round (but probably not a new wave) of shoegaze, no doubt plenty will imitate the genre as it was, without really adding anything to it or, as is typical of the state of the industry, doing so in a rather bland, corporate cash-in sort of fashion. So credit to Hotline TNT where it’s due: this band properly gets the most important aspects of shoegaze, the disorientation and power, the volume and blare, plus chuck in a few moments of real exhilaration. Sure, nothing’s being invented – but at least the appropriation feels genuinely inspired.

Gouge Away and Hotline TNT – Music Hall – February 4, 2025

Florida hardcore quartet Gouge Away — out on the road in support of their third studio album, Deep Sage — and Brooklyn noise-pop five-piece Hotline TNT — with a couple new songs of their own — teamed up on Tuesday to provide an outstanding night of guitar rock at Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Hayes Noble is a musician originally from Galena, Illinois (home to Ulysses S. Grant). He's now based in Spokane, Washington. For such a young guy (he was only 17 when "Head Cleaner" was released), he makes an impressive amount of controlled and melodic noise.

Both is debut and follow up ("As It Was, As We Were"...due in June) LP are released by Two Two One (221) Press. This immediately made me think of what Buick might sound like with singing. Other touchstones have to be Dinosaur Jr., Husker Du, Love As Laughter, Hotline TNT and Knapsack.

"I'm So Tired" is an anthemic fist raiser of a song that any of the above bands would have been proud to write.
