On 30 September 1965, the Indonesian military, working closely with the US government, initiated a coup that would depose President Sukarno and install the brutal, 30-year dictatorship of General Suharto.
In the dark years that followed, the dictatorship massacred over a million Indonesian communists, with the CIA and US diplomats drawing up “kill lists” for the Indonesian military. The operation would become a template for the US’s regime change operations for decades to come.
Major-General Suharto with Indonesian Army in 1966
In 1945, President Sukarno led Indonesia to independence from Dutch colonial rule. He championed the Non-Aligned Movement and hosted the historic Bandung Conference, a meeting of Afro-Asian states, in 1955.
First President of Indonesia Sukarno making a speech circa 1945
Opening the conference and forecasting what was to come, Sukarno said: “We are often told ‘Colonialism is dead’. Let us not be deceived or even soothed by that… Colonialism also has its modern dress, in the form of economic control, intellectual control, actual physical control by a small, but alien community within a nation.”

By 1965, Indonesia possessed one of the world's largest communist parties, the PKI. The PKI had a mass membership and mobilized vast numbers of people in the battle against Indonesia’s ruling class.
Campaign of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) in September 1955.
Terrified by the strength and organization of Indonesia’s people, the Indonesian military’s 30th September Movement began to purge the PKI.
Men suspected of being IPK members being transported under guard by an armed Indonesian soldier
In the early hours of 1 October, a group of military conscripts murdered six high-ranking generals. Blaming the deaths on the PKI, Suharto used the attacks as a pretext to seize power. CIA communications equipment allowed him to spread false reports around the country and begin a long campaign of anti-communist propaganda.
The US had tried to overthrow Sukarno for years; in 1958, the CIA backed armed regional rebellions against the central government. In 1965, they did all they could to aid Suharto’s murderous power grab.
The campaign soon became genocidal. On islands like Bali, up to 10% of the population was massacred — and luxury hotels soon began to appear over the killing fields.
One US embassy staffer told the US press that Suharto’s military “probably killed a lot of people, and I probably have a lot of blood on my hands, but that's not all bad.”
Time Magazine referred to the killings as “the West’s best news for years in Asia”.
A cable from the US embassy’s first secretary, Mary Vance Trent, to the State Department referred to events in Indonesia as a “fantastic switch which has occurred over 10 short weeks”. It also included an estimate that 100,000 people had been slaughtered.
Cementing his power, Suharto became president in 1967. His ‘New Order’ policy allowed Western capitalism to exploit Indonesia’s cheap labour and plunder its natural resources. Civil rights and dissent were suppressed.
In one of the world’s most populous countries, any possibility for the emergence of a new, democratic political project was eliminated. Richard Nixon described Indonesia as “the greatest prize in Southeast Asia”. Suharto would not leave office until 1998.

CIA officers described Suharto’s rise to power and anti-communist purge as the “model operation” and “Jakarta” soon became the codeword for anti-communist extermination programs in Latin America, where hundreds of thousands were massacred in regime change efforts engineered by Washington.

In honor of the big win, could I request a Rick O'Connell X Fem!Reader and they both go treasure hunting? Maybe the reader saves Rick or something? Super fluff and a bit of some teasing? Thank you! 😘
OMG FINALLY I HAVE BEEN WANTING TO WRITE FOR THE MUMMY! ❤️
You'd be lost and alone without me
Pairing: Rick O'connell x reader
Description: You and Rick confess your feelings for each other after saving him on your journey in Indonesia
You ran as fast as you could being chased by the group of people after the ancient artifact that you and Rick had been after and found to take to a museum in the US. The two of you had heard of an ancient jewel that was hidden in ruins of the Indonesian jungle immediately agreeing not only to go and bring it back to the states but also going together surprising the both of you who didn't know about each other for the first bit until you saw each other smiling and hugging, you and rick had been on expeditions before in Italy, Spain, and Israel meeting through your mutual friend Ardeth Bey who you had known for years since childhood growing up for a few years in Egypt where the two of you met and were friends before moving back to the US meeting him again when he joined the two of you in Spain and joining the two of you on your expedition in Israel. You both developed feelings for each other half way through your Italy trip and they soared during and after the two trips after as you both secretly thought of how to tell the other and what to do if the other rejected but all the plans for that went out the window when you saw him on the ground surrounded filling you with fear and anger jumping off the tree you had climbed running top speed jumping on one of the men hitting him with a rock followed by pulling 4 men off of rick and using your gun shooting them not to kill them but to wound them enough so they couldn't move for a bit. You grabbed rick's hand and the both of you ran until you were on the side of the road not too far from the hotel you were both staying at where ardeth was waiting for you both to come back with the jewel taking a few breaths before walking back checking behind you to make sure it was just the two of you and no one following behind grabbing waters and fruits from locals who could tell you were out of breath, you met with ardeth giving him the jewel to keep and hide until the next morning when you would meet up with him before going to the airport heading back for your home in the US staying your final night together in the hotel eating dinner and watching tv until you both fell asleep in your beds waking up to get a drink quietly hearing the fridge a few feet away from you open. You turn seeing a half asleep rick talking to each other as you went back to the other room watching tv until he walked over sitting next to you feeling a sudden feeling of warmth and comfort. You looked at each each other slowly leaning towards each other only a few inches away "I have loved you since we met and I haven't been able to not love you" before you could finish or stop for him to say something back he grabs your face pulling you to him with his hands on your face and in a kiss that was way more than you ever imagined when you thought about having a kiss with rick making you feel even more warmth holding each other smiling as you fell asleep with your head on his chest.

Takut
Seru banget deh kemarin lihat instastorynya Judith, dia dan rekan-rekannya di Kompas.id lagi nge-run investigasi series gitu berkaitan dengan angka pernikahan yang turun di Indonesia recently (as are in all other parts of the world).
Begitu selesai baca artikel Kompas ini, otakku langsung wandering around ngalor ngidul: “Iya yah, kalau nanti suamiku gak suka dengerin musik gimana… nggak ngerasa musik itu penting in life…
Semoga dia pernah getting involved in any kind of art production deh: be it in a band, or plays, dance group, atau bahkan jadi sound engineernya aja pun gapapa.”
Udah tuh kan kekhawatiran tentang “selera seni”-nya… Apakah berhenti di situ sodara-sodara? Tentu saja tidak.
Makin parah sekarang spiralnya pindah ke keilmuan… (palm face). “Kalau dia gak se-fascinated itu ngelihat fossil gimana…? Atau meteorite? Atau just plain burung making sound in the park??? Aku harus sama orang yang appreciating nature juga Ya Allah, kayanya biologist wouldn’t be a bad option… atau orang yang belajar space engineering/aviation juga gapapa deh minimal dia bisa appreciate betapa kerennya burung bisa terbang dengan segala aerodinamisitasnya (is that even a word?)”
Setelah profesi/keilmuan, pindah ke lifestyle/hobby… “Terus harus suka baca juga ni orang, jangan sampe amit-amit gak suka baca. Kalau bisa tapi jangan yang bacanya self-help book gitu Ya Allah karena cringe banget gabisa banget akutuh sama abang-abang/dedek-dedek yang paling iye ngerasa paling ngerti gimana dunia bekerja cuma gara-gara selesai baca “The Psychology of Money” (I have no beef on this book whatsoever and I also haven’t read it, but you know what I mean, you guys know this very specific group of people and how annoying they can be). Selain suka baca, I would be really grateful YaAllah kalau ni orang well-traveled, minimal pernah nyusun itinerary travel sendiri, knows how to book flights, hotels, making visa. Intinya amit-amit banget kalau sampai harus deal sama cowok yang gak bisa ngapa-ngapain sendiri atau cuma bisa nyuruh-nyuruh orang doang. I don’t mind sih kalau dia emang belum banyak visited places, tapi minimal banget mau belajar dan adaptasi aja udah cukup kok YaAllah. Sama I would really appreciate kalo orang ini juga suka belajar new languages, how fun the house will be kalau kita keep switching languages dan baca buku berbagai macam bahasa sambil travelling ke banyak tempat buat practice ngomong bahasa itu??! (Ok udah agak a stretch, sekarang jadi kayak imajinasi tingkat tinggi).”
Tapi WAJAR KAN??! Orang ini adalah orang yang aku akan spend the rest of my life with?! Tentu aja aku bakal harus compromise for certain things and he will do, too. But it never hurts to be specific on who you want to share your life with???
Ujung-ujungnya tapi melihat track record aku, most of the time, kalau aku sudah SUKA banget sama orang, sampe head over heels, udah kek kena santet, biasanya ya don’t matter juga mau ni orang dengerinnya ST12 juga (don’t at me, I love ST12, and RADJA too, I think they are geniuses). Tapi being single over 30 now dan setelah mengakumulasi cukup lumayan pengalaman hidup berrelasi dengan orang-orang, at least aku tahu kualitas apa yang aku GAK MAU ada di calon pasanganku kelak. And it’s a really good filter.
Pada akhirnya, pas dipikir-pikir lagi, teman-temanku pun nggak dengerin Stray Kids tapi aku bisa-bisa aja berteman sama mereka, teman-temanku sekarang nggak semuanya bisa appreciating fossil the way I do but I have no problem. I am fine with that. Mungkin emang kayanya standarku tinggi banget tapi pas dilihat-lihat lagi, rasa toleransiku sepertinya jauh lebih tinggi/besar daripada “ick”-ku sama orang. Pada akhirnya aku tetap sayang sama teman-temanku ini, kalimat andalanku: “Well, if they are happy, so am I.”.
Aamiin. (Kata orang kalau doa di-spell out baik out loud verbally atau dalam bentuk tulisan, biasanya akan jadi lebih mudah termanifestasi, karena otak kita sudah tahu apa yang kita mau).

(I really should be writing my thesis but here I am, writing what I want in my future husband).

Modern au where the girls meet in college and get assigned random roommate and they’ve never met before because they are all study abroad students spending a year in the US. Lily from England is with Dorcas from an African country ( I don’t know which one to choose if I don’t choose mine lol so I’ll leave that to you). Mary ( not sure which country but I’m getting middle eastern vibes) is with Pandora ( I kind of want to give her mythology roots like Greek yk ? ). Marlene ( I want to give her Indonesia what do you think ?) with Alice ( definitely Europe vibes here )
Anyway they meet and bond about discovering American culture and how ridiculous some of the stuff is and they do make American friends but they keep coming back to each other and they become closer and closer but also the time comes that they each have to go back to their countries and you have a really tearful/angsty goodbye
Just feel like giving them really different backgrounds because it’s women history month and women from all around the world should be celebrated and also people from a lot of different countries are just really cool as a friend group
Anyway some head cannon for this au
Each of their dorm is fully decorated to the point you can see their personality when you enter the room
Mary is the kind to stay up to do homework and Pandora wakes up really early which creates some funny situations between them
All of them fight over who has the best cultural food ( Lily is not allowed to participate she is British/lh)
They do the American college thing to the full extent like going to football games, having parties and stuff and still aces their classes somehow
That was really long but oh well here are my two cents lol hope you like it <3 I really like your writing btw
Hi hi!!! Sorry for taking so long to respond to this, I saw it a few days ago and was too tired to respond and I’ve just been in a state of brain mush ever since.
Okay, I love this idea SO SO much! Especially them all coming together to be confused about American culture lol, I think that’s so funny.
I 100% agree with all of these ethnicities for them as well, I can see it all clearly (the Pandora being from Greece just makes sense idk why more people don’t HC this).
One headcannon I’ve been having lately is that Marlene is Australian because like, she is literally the definition of an Aussie bogan in my head (if you’ve never heard of Amyl and The Sniffers go check out their music because I think they’re SO Marlene Band Au coded).
And any Aussie out there will know this well and true, but for some reason all aussies just dip to Indonesia (specifically Bali) every winter to escape the cold, like it’s actually amusing how many just disappear over there. SO many of my friends have gone on Bali trips it’s ridiculous.
Anyway, you suggesting Marlene be from Indonesia just popped the best idea in my head where like her dad is Australian and took a trip with his mates to Bali. I’m thinking they would frequent the bar next to their hotel and get drunk there every night and he fell in love with one of the bartenders that snuck him free drinks every time he complimented her and then they hooked up one night and she got pregnant without realising and then he went home and she freaked out. Luckily she got his number because they fell in love and then like she moved to Australia to raise Marlene. I think that’s such a funny cute way to tie our headcannons together.
And yes Mary is 100% the type to stay up so late where as Pandoras in bed by nine and up with the sun.
Their rooms would be the swankiest rooms you’ve ever seen.
They would 100% all bully Lily for her comfort meal, which is beans straight out the can, and would all shove their fav foods down her throat. She’d love it though and pretend to complain about it all the time so all her friends would keep making her all these amazing snacks and meals.
They definitely would get involved with the whole American college experience but no one is prepared for how Marlene acts at the college football games. She’d spend one third of the game complaining about how this isn’t real football (Insert AFL which she grew up watching with her dad - footy), a second third of the game skulling beer and challanging random college boys to drink offs and shoeies (idk how to spell it, when you drink out of a shoe), and the last third screaming so hard when their team gets a point or goal or however it works and going balisic and booing the opposition and screaming about the unfair umpiring, and she’d 1000% be the loudest there.
Sorry, I’m passionate about Marlene.
But yessss this is such a good idea lol I love it! Thanks for sending in the ask, I really appreciate hearing about the girls <3

GISB in S'pore Part I.
SINGAPORE: GISBH has allegedly operated a 'guest house' in Singapore.
Ms Zainab said she was not a pilgrim or a member of the group and only rented a room at the guesthouse in 2011. "I am not a former Ikhwan pilgrim. As far as I remember, I only rented a room in the house for 2 or 3 months before I went out. I know that they are members of the Ikhwan movement which was previously called Rufaqa," She found out from her friend that there was a room available for rent. "When I came to rent it, I didn't see any abnormalities. When I rented it, I handed over $800 on the first day and everything was as usual," she added.
When she moved into the three-storey house, Ms Zainab said there were already around 25 teenagers and girls living there. "I don't know how many years or months they have been there. What I remember is that I handed over my monthly money to this woman. She is the Head of the Singapore division and a worshipper of the group, but not the owner of the house." "The house is for women including teenagers, children, also wives who are in confinement or wives who come for a while. They were between 2 years to about 16 years old. If there are boys, boys are 2 years old and below. If the husband or men comes to the house, it is during the Maulid celebration or when there is a gathering" explained Ms. Zainab.
During her three months of staying there, she also saw that there were several members from abroad who stayed there. "The function of the 'guest house' is as a place for Brotherhood members in Singapore or from overseas who come to Singapore. They do not need to rent a hotel and can stay in a Singapore guest house," said Ms Zainab.
During the period of renting, Ms. Zainab did not see the children or teenagers living in the house attend school or receive formal education subjects. "When I am not working, I see that they have no formal education. For example, the subject of Geography and others, all of them are absent," she said.
"No one went to childcare centre or to the primary school, there was nothing. Madrasah or secular education does not exist at all," added Ms. Zainab. Ms. Zainab observed they learned more about Abaya, the founder of Al-Arqam Ashaari Muhammad.
Their education is only about Abuya. The akhlaq of Abuya, the specialty of Abuya and where Abuya was born. For me, madrasah education involves the importance of Al-Quran, but they don't learn about the Quran. They have their own books."
During the period of stay in the 'guest house', Ms. Zainab was also invited to participate in the 'religious' sessions of the pilgrims. "I was invited. As tenants, when invited, don't we want to include ourselves? When invited to tazkirah - I inititally joined. But after a while, I feel like something is not right," shared Ms. Zainab. Shee also recounted several incidents that made her suspicious. "The first time I was told to do a Silat movement to combat lust after prayer. Some movement includes jumping. The worshippers after their congregational prayers will give space. They each do it alone."
She added that the member will pray directly to 'Abuya'. "When you pray but do not ask Allah. You pray to Abuya - he is human, just like us. So when you pray (to Abuya), I feel that it is wrong."
"They will hold their heads and pray 'O Abuya, Islam our spirits, O Abuya, Islam our passions'" said Ms. Zainab. In addition to the classes taught there, the congregation at the 'guest house', according to Ms. Zainab, also attended classes online. "Every day after Zohor or Isyak prayers, they will hold live streaming between Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Makkah and Medina. They will preach about Abuya, some ask for updates in each country as well," she said.
"I heard the voice of Umm Jah (Abuya's wife) talking about the 'congregation of truth', about how she dismissed the slander or allegations of former members At that time, there were former members who opposed Umm Jah and to them, anyone who opposed them and the group was an enemy of Islam," she added.
Recalling her experience of about three months at the guest house, Ms Zainab said that some of the teenagers in the 'guest house' were working, but not being paid. She was told by one of the teenagers there that they worked at a café on Arab Street. At that time, the teenager was about 16 years old and in addition, there were about 10 other teenagers who also worked at the place.
"She works 10 hours in a café, sometimes 12 hours because if it's Friday, Saturday, Sunday, there are many customers," said Ms. Zainab. "Their leader taught that if you work, don't expect money. Why expect remuneration? Help to be helped - later Abuya will help in terms of sustenance, in terms of children, in terms of getting a righteous husband. That's help. It means that our work will be rewarded but not in the form of money," she explained.
Seeing such things for herself, Ms. Zainab felt uncomfortable and finally decided to move out of the 'guest house'.

Ah, a perfect illustration for me to muse about KL.
- For some reason I expected KL to follow a similar flow; after all, I was also going back after ten years (and thereby redoing a somewhat malcontent experience with the ex). However, I made many tactical errors here. I did not make solid plans, I waffled and faffed about, unable to decide if I was staying here or going there (inevitably, I stayed as it required the least effort), I had no real meaningful social interaction, I stayed in a hotel with no breakfast, I was bereft when faced with description-less menus in down-to-earth local establishments ("what do you recommend?" or "which is your favourite?" to the server is a very dangerous question indeed). I feel somewhat remorseful that I did not commit to a bit, either complete sloth and hipster cafes, or truly dedicated tourist-ing. I also stayed directly on Jalan Petaling, and found in a strange way (okay maybe I'm really stretching for a complaint here) it detracted from the fun of going in search of the place to be if you're staying smack in the middle of it.
- When I went to Seoul I did research. I had plans. Things to see! Places to go! I stayed at a guesthouse and had some friendly interaction with the host, and daily provided breakfast. Most places I ate at had picture menus for wayward foreigners, or at least I was familiar enough with Korean food and Hangul to figure things out. It was suitable weather for rambling around. I was having a bittersweet life transition ending Chinese class, and revisiting Korea after ten years!
It was also not the weather for extended trotting about outside (I did eventually partake in the time-honoured tropical tradition of walking around the giant multi-storey AC'd mall though).
- This is not to say I didn't enjoy the hipster cafes and art spaces (once I actually got out of bed). Or staying in a hotel room bigger than my own apartment, with nice bedding (even if I never figured out how to turn on the hot water in the shower). But in hindsight it feels kind of a coagulated blur. When I was there, it was an elastic eternity, and now that I'm back, almost as if I never left. Perhaps I simply wasn't in the right frame of mind, or perhaps I was just somewhat brainwashed by the blaring music from the bars across the street until 3 or 4 AM my first few nights there.
- I will say though, I had a very heartening experience being gendered unequivocally correctly around 99% of the time. One thing about Chinese is that with no spoken gendered pronouns and a formal "you", it is very hard to tell how people are perceiving me in Taiwan until they are trying to redirect me to a different bathroom, which is really not the optimal situation in which to find this out. Malaysia is very into the sir/ma'am honorifics. I suspect there is also some effect had by a more conservative, illegal-homosexuality sort of culture where clothes and styling are great determiners of which box one gets sorted into, vs Taipei where it's fair game to assume that maybe you look like that cause you're just really, really gay?
- The metro escalators in KL go much faster than I'm used to an escalator going (I'm not complaining). The metro in KL is also disjointed and confusing and the ticket machines are uncooperative for wrangling.
- I don't want to judge a group of people on a whole based on their hospitality personas, so I'll just say at the least, Malay Malaysians working in customer service are very charming and friendly.
- I really intended to eat a ton of fruit and then I just...didn't, maybe because I am used to buying fruit whole in multi-kilo volumes and eating it at home, but the hotel was not conducive to that at all (no mini fridge, no knives).
- Every time I go to Singapore/Indonesia/Malaysia I come away wanting to learn Malay/Indonesian because it is just so delightful to look at the stack of languages in one piece of signage and have no real idea which word matches up to which in English. (Well, that's not entirely correct, I can recognise some basic things à la "saya suka makan pisang" after those two weeks couchsurfing in Sumatera some years ago. But then, I'm always torn because if I want to learn an Austronesian language I should really just go for Filipino so I can actually understand half my tumblr dash- I cracked open a teach-yourself sort of book at a hostel in Cebu once and my brain simply refused to unlatch its death grip on Chinese at the time, but maybe there's room for another grammar system in there now?)
- On the plane back there were (or so it sounded) at least two children who threw a fit and screamed bloody murder at full lung capacity (I am really not exaggerating here, it was impressive) when we experienced turbulence during takeoff and landing, but I had already put in my hotel earplugs, and simply smiled to myself thinking of how I'd learned, through a visit to Teotihuacán one year, that when the Aztecs sacrificed children to the rain god, the more they cried the better the rains were expected to be.
- For the first time ever at Taoyuan Airport the immigration officer examined my passport in minute detail (even some kind of little magnifying glass thing?) and asked how long I was staying, which reminded me a) I forgot to make myself look presentable and b) I claim to live here but I actually have zero guaranteed right to it at the moment (sleep deprived and not having eaten since breakfast, this threatened to send me into an emotional spiral until I reminded myself of those compounding factors and decided to save that thought for after dinner). I said I was leaving on the 19th (because that is the date for which I still have an unused exit flight). The officer seemed pacified and stamped me in for another 90 days. But maybe it is time to finally put some effort into reestablishing my formal alien residency.
- Last but not least, maybe I should have stayed in KL cause apparently Taiwan is having a heatwave and it's gonna be 39C tomorrow, and KL will be a chilly 31 or so.
#no i don't support human sacrifice but it amuses me to think one man's pain is another man's precipitation#i will say i am slowly learning how to get around my restaurant anxiety#even if it involves hours of online investigation and multiple backup plans#i can and will voluntarily go into and sit down in one alone#sometimes i even have a good time at it too!

Kevin: (sambil mendekati Michelle) Eh, hai Michelle! Ternyata kamu juga datang ke sini.
Michelle: (senyum tanpa menjawab)
James: (melihat muka Jonathan sambil senyum sarkas) diem Jon mending lu lanjut makan.
Jonathan: ok
James: dih
Tina: (menatap Michelle) Oh iya?
Tiana: Ini James bu, anak nya Gerald Hartono. Pacar Michelle.
Halo, James.
James: Halo (mengulurkan tangan untuk bersalaman) James Hartono, anak Gerald Hartono pemilik Hartono Hospital Group dengan 50 cabang rumah sakit di seluruh Indonesia. Senang bertemu denganmu tante dan Melvin.
Kevin: (memperbaiki James yang salah menyebut namanya) Kevin!
James: (sambil memegang tangan Michelle) Om Tante, aku pinjem dulu ya Michelle.
Bryan: (mengangguk) Setiap hari kamu pinjam Michelle, sampai kamu lupa muka anak Om sendiri. (bercanda)
Michelle: (malu) DAD!
James dan Michelle lalu mendatangi meja Jonathan dan Jane sambil berpegangan tangan.
James: Siapa tuh babe? Bangsat banget OKB-nya, sok akrab lagi.
Jonathan: Itu Kevin, anak karyawan bokap gue.
James sama Michelle duduk di kursi meja mereka.
James: Anak karyawan bokap lu? Buang aja tuh bokapnya. Anaknya aibin aja.
Michelle: ( sambil nyentuh tangan James biar dia tenang) James, jangan gitu dong.
Jane yang tadi cuma duduk bengong, liat muka kesel James jadi gemes dan mengejek.
Jane: Kevin? Kevin yang proyek bareng lo, kan, Chelle? Lucu banget tuh anak. Beliin makan siang juga kemarin.
Jane senyum-senyum ngejek, Jonathan langsung ketawa sambil nyindir James.
Jonathan: omg! serius babe?
Michelle pegang tangan James buat tenangin dia.
Michelle: Babe, gausah takut, kan kamu tau gue sayang sama kamu
Kalo dia sok genit dikit, keluarganya bakal tendang dia sendiri. Iya kan, babe?
Jonathan: ( senyum sambil angguk) "Iya, sayang."
James: Pokoknya aku gak suka ya Chelle kamu berdua sama dia, kalo ada project pun ajak aku. Mau ke rumah dia kek ke mana kek pokoknya I have to be there.
Jonathan: udah udah tegang amet bro, masa seorang James Hartono takut sama Kevin? Bocah okb. Malu James sama ukuran rumah lu. Kamar lu aja segeda ruang tamu dia.
Jane: ew? serius babe?

2023 / 08
Aperçu of the Week:
"I have met children who have learned to count off 45 seconds - that's how long it takes for Russian missiles to hit Kharkiv after the siren alarm."
(German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock addressing the UN General Assembly on Thursday on the annual of Russia's attack on Ukraine)
Bad News of the Week:
Since the Ukraine war, everyone knows about the Wagner Group. Consisting of mercenaries, commanded by Putin compadre Yevgeny Prigozhin. While soldiers are placed in the chain of command of their officers, at least ostensibly serving the good of their country, the same is not true of mercenaries. They are simply on a pay roll. No matter by whom. If one can apply an ethical standard to acts of war at all, it certainly does not apply to mercenaries.
Even before the Ukraine operation, the Wagner Group was active. There is evidence of their action for at least Syria, Venezuela, Libya, Mali, Mozambique, the Central African Republic, and Sudan. With horrific reports of atrocities, including against civilians, that leave one speechless even in the context of war. As I said, the lack of ethical standard....
Prigozhin's recruitment strategy is particularly perfidious. He offers prisoners their freedom if they commit to a six-month war effort. According to Die Zeit, tens of thousands of prison inmates have already accepted. We are not talking about convicted purse-snatchers here. We are talking, for example, about Alexander Tyutin, who was sentenced to 23 years in prison for a quadruple contract killing. So - to put it sarcastically - a professional. Who is now recovering from his stint on the beach in Antalya. Yes, that's in Turkey. Yes, Turkey is a NATO member. But the man was, after all, pardoned by the legal system of his home country.
This course of action shows an appalling concatenation of different institutions. From the Ministry of Justice accepting this get out of jail card, to the Ministry of Interior signing off on the deal and allowing them to leave the country, to the Ministry of Defense inserting these special forces into their strategies, and the secret service providing them with military intelligence. Of course, this is only possible with the blessing of Vladimir Putin himself. Who uses the group as a geostrategic tool to exert international influence when ideology, the ruble, or fossil energy no longer work effectively enough.
I would not have thought that even at the level of Russian rule of law, I would be surprised by a parallel world in which even those low regulations no longer apply. Which shows that Putin believes himself to be above all earthly things. It cannot be a coincidence that he compares himself with Tsar Peter the Great, of all people. He went to war not only against the Crimea and Azov, but also against Sweden in the "Great Northern War". Will history teach us nothing once more?
Good News of the Week:
Humans are pushing nature back more and more because of their numbers and lifestyles. For example, orangutans in Indonesia are losing their habitat as humanity demands more and more palm oil. And Corona would not have existed either if the Chinese did not have such an appetite for wild animals. But this development is not only happening in Asia with its mega-populations. In the Alps, too, with more and more ski resorts, hotels, excursion destinations, etc., much natural habitat has already had to give way to concrete and steel.
Fortunately, there is a growing awareness that tourism can be sustainable and that it is the unspoiled beauty of nature that attracts tourists in summer and winter. As a result, more and more landscapes are being placed under nature conservation, and awareness of this is growing. And indeed: the first measurable successes are appearing!
The symbolic animal of the Alps is the chamois. The shy climbing specialists above the mountain forests stand for untamed alpine nature like no other animal. And according to the Bavarian State Forests, the population in the Bavarian Alps is recovering: 1,654 geese were counted at about a hundred observation points in 2020. In 2021, there were already 1,873 and in 2022 even 2,060. This fits a counterpart in the very north of Germany: on the coasts of the North Sea, the number and spread of the grey seal is increasing again. Not long ago, Germany's largest predator was considered "very endangered".
Personal happy moment of the week:
Saturday evening in Miesbach, the capital of our district: many people are out and about, you can hear talking and laughing, the pubs are full, light shines onto the street from decorated shop windows. Quite normal life, which after all feels new again after the last few years. It's a good thing that our friends had made reservations at the Osteria, otherwise we wouldn't have been able to get a seat. Simply a nice evening.
I couldn't care less...
...that Great Britain hardly has any access to vegetables and fruit anymore. Because the problems are home-made. Because of Brexit. It causes high customs and formality hurdles for exporting producers in the South, who thus prefer to sell in the European internal market. Domestic growers have been excluded from energy price subsidies, making it no longer profitable to operate greenhouses at home. And the cheap seasonal workers previously employed in agriculture, primarily from southeastern Europe, are no longer allowed into the country. Sorry, but you have deliberately chosen exactly this disaster.
As I write this...
...I am amazed at the unexpected return of winter. Since the beginning of the month the temperatures were clearly in the plus - up to 16 ° Celsius stood on the thermometer. Therefore, I had personally already ticked off the winter. Now I look at a snow-covered landscape and rejoice. And try not to think about the fact that Monday morning will be chaos on the roads and railways.
Post Scriptum
On the annual of Russia's attack on Ukraine, a new ice age is drawing near. On one hand, Putin changes his narrative: the West would use a Nazi puppet government in Kiev to threaten his country. Seeks military support from Belarus, Iran, China and others. Unilaterally cancels the New Start nuclear arms control program. On the other hand, NATO empowers its eastern flank: the "Budapest 9" strengthen their cooperation. Poland gets moral support from Joe Biden. Air defense systems are deployed on the Slovak border. Such a confrontation of global power blocs was last seen in the Cold War. And I thought those times were over once and for all...

It Was Manta Be…
Jo is in the building!
Welcome to the Jo-takeover! This is the part of the blog where Helen wisely decides the readers need a new perspective (hence the sisterly takeover), which, by happy coincidence, also means she gets a journalling break. So let’s pick up from where she last left…
At late notice, I decided to join Helen and Sam for a few weeks on their travels and so it was that on New Year’s Eve, I flew over most of Asia to head to the eastern most part of Indonesia—Papua. Indonesia is a vast country, so even from the capital, Jakarta, it was a four hour flight to reach our meeting point in the city of Sorong. I exited the airport in the early morning of 2nd January at the exact moment Helen and Sam stepped out of a taxi to pick me up and sweep me away to their hotel. There I met Etienne, a Swiss traveller who had been on the liveaboard with Helen and Sam and would be joining us for the next leg of the trip. Both Helen and Etienne had health issues on the liveaboard that meant they couldn’t fully dive, so the plan was to head back into Raja Ampat, with myself in tow, to absorb the underwater world. Sam unfortunately still had his ear problems and so would be snorkelling the waters.
From Sorong, the onwards journey involved a 2-hour ferry, followed by a 1-hour boat ride—plenty of time for me to observe the sad amount of plastic debris floating in the water in this otherwise tranquil and remote setting. Eventually we reached our base for the next ten days—a group of huts built on a random strip of bare sand in the Indo-Pacific Ocean.
Photos Above: dive team ferry crossing; speed boat to our destination
The accommodation was very basic (the most basic Helen and Sam had yet to contend with) with a grass-thatched roof that leaked during the nightly thunderstorms and a bathroom in a separate building with a leaky pipe and distinct lack of flushing toilet. But it had a veranda with a full ocean view in front and a jungle full of lively bird calls behind. All that was missing was a hammock; within one day of being on the island I had successfully negotiated the use of the spare one from the local Divemaster trainee. We hung it up in the communal space, and with that I was declared the best sister-not-in-law around. Also quintessential for our stay turned out to be the vegan chocolate spread Sam picked up in a supermarket in Sorong –a ‘lifesaver’ (Etienne’s words) to accompany the breakfast of fried bananas, occasionally served on top of boiled bananas with a side of fresh banana (safe to say, the vegan memo was picked up by our hosts).

Diving Raja Ampat
We were quick to acquaint ourselves with the underwater world of Raja Ampat, which it’s fair to say, was absolutely drop dead stunning. The coral was colourful and abundant and life teamed everywhere you looked—not that I always found it easy to spot.
There were tiny pygmy seahorses the size of my fingernail and so camouflaged I could barely make them out against the pink coral. And there was a turtle sat under a rock, so big that Helen had to point twice before my vision was able to zoom out and absorb the scale of the creature. We saw electric clams flashing our torchlight back at us, and colourful urchins bimbling along on the sandy bottom. Tiny octopuses buried themselves in the sand, and orangutan crabs with spindly legs and covered in orange fluff wound themselves through the coral mesh. Black- and white-tipped reef sharks flitted in and out of the murky blue depths and two mobula rays flew overhead, silhouetted against the light of the surface. A bizarre looking wobbegong shark, looking like it’d been squashed by a roller, rested on a huge fan of coral. Huge shoals of fish encircled us as we hung weightless above the reef, watching the many individuals acting as one glittering mass.

Video Above: a few videographic snapshots of our (mindblowingly incredible) time in Raja Ampat, with huge thank yous to Etienne Cristini and Mario Kakante for letting us use their footage! And for being generally excellent humans. Music is "Daydream - Dance Remix" by Ash.
On one dive, I heard the urgent metallic tapping sound of Mario our dive guide tank-banging to get our attention, and looked over to see him literally dancing underwater—he had found a rare frogfish, coloured pink and green (and looking very much like coral to me), resting next to the reef.
Photos Above: sisterly diving; coffee time during a surface interval; after a great dive; diving boat team; one of Raja Ampat's small villages
For those on Instagram looking to get an artistic flavour of diving Raja Ampt, I recommend Etienne’s excellent reel.
Is this the Real Life, or is this Just Mantasea?
The absolutely pinnacle of diving Raja Ampat had to be the mantastic moments with the glorious Reef Manta Rays.
My first interaction with them was on my second day of diving and involved dropping into the water on a section of reef called Manta Ridge—a cleaning station that mantas regularly drop by so that the fish that live on the reef can clean the manta’s skin. Once in the water there was a fair current, so we hooked into the rock and floated in place watching as a couple of mantas swept by us, one coming so close to me that I could feel its eye keenly observing and sizing me up.
A week later, feeling much more au fait with this whole diving thing, I requested a trip back to the mantas to absorb even more of them. Little could we imagine what waited for us.
Due to tidal patterns, we set off from the dive centre at lunchtime (an odd time to be heading out diving—normally you set off very early to be in for a chance at seeing mantas). Out in the water near Manta Ridge, we spot a few manta wingtips cresting the waves. We casually looked over—we’re in manta land so we expected to see a few on the surface. But, the more we looked, the more wingtips we saw. Was that 20, 30 mantas grouping together? Surely not, there would be no reason for them to be in a train like this. But there they were! Although itching to be in the water, we couldn’t dive in as they were swimming over deep blue through a strong current—a dangerous (and illogical) place to dive. Instead, we scrambled to put our masks and fins on and leapt into the water to float on the surface at the side of the manta train to watch many, so many mantas gliding in front, around and under us. I will happily admit I completely lost my shit at this point. I watched the back of two beasts receding into the blue, and turned around to find five of the creatures coming straight at me with their mouths open, feeding. My heart stopped, my jaw dropped, and I almost started to cry in pure awe.
Once the manta train had passed and the current swept us behind them, we clambered back on the boat and went back round for take two. Manta after manta after manta passing by—Helen later used GoPro footage filmed by Mario to estimate that there were 40–50 mantas. Un. Be. Lieveable.
After this experience, we descended down to Manta Ridge and hooked into the rock once more. Floating in the blue, watching the busy life of fish on coral reefs, I entered a meditative state, only to be interrupted by Helen enthusiastically grabbing my arm and pointing—enter mantas stage left! There were three males and one female who had swung by for a mantatory clean. Oblivious to the divers, they flew amongst and around us, one even hovering vertically and puffing out its gills right by Helen.
Fair to say, this was an experience to remember.

A Motley Crew
A wonderful band of people contributed to our time in Raja Ampat. In particular, I enjoyed finding my diving feet again under the guidance of Mario (divemaster and Rubik’s Cube extrordinaire) and whilst in the company of Etienne (who celebrated his 100th dive with us).
Our friend and fellow diver Bodhy nicknamed Helen the ‘Professor’ due to her seemingly inexhaustible knowledge of the underwater world. She would spend the time between dives answering all manner of questions from him and the rest of the diving squad on species of shark, behaviour of crabs, and how to determine the sex of mantas. And special mention goes to Anto also who we hope to see diving again, this time complete with a dive computer.
Photos Above: our lovely diving buddies; exploring the island's jungle
Meanwhile Sam became something of a legend at the dive shop (‘he planned a four-month diving holiday and hasn’t dived since week one?! *dramatic gasp* Oh my god I really feel for him’). Very understandably, he decided that after one week of hanging out in the hammock, his back needed some TLC and so took himself back off to civilisation for a massage and a decent hotel room.
Towards the end of our trip, our fellow travellers headed onwards to their next destination, leaving Helen, myself, and Mario to become something of a dream team both above and below water. I’d very much enjoyed having Helen as my own personal diving mentor and as time progressed, we developed a surprisingly fluid communication style whilst diving so that poor Mario still had to observe our incessant chatter even under the waves.
Photos Above: photobomber!; with our fab guide Mario
Onwards and Upwards
After 19 dives, our time observing the most diverse underwater ecosystem in the world was up. Helen and I packed up our kit and followed in Sam’s footsteps to be reunited with him in our next destination.
Photos Above: it's a hard life; so long Raja Ampat and thanks for all the fish!

Bali Nine drug smugglers 'relieved' to be back in Australia
Tiffanie Turnbull. BBC News
(L-R, background) Martin Stephens, Michael Czugaj, Scott Rush, Matthew Norman and Si Yi Chen inside a room in Bali International Airport during a handover process for their return
The five remaining members of the infamous "Bali Nine" drug ring say they are "relieved and happy" to be home in Australia, after serving nearly 20 years in Indonesian prisons.
Matthew Norman, Scott Rush, Martin Stephens, Si Yi Chen, and Michael Czugaj arrived in Darwin on Sunday following years of lobbying by Australia on their behalf.
"They look forward, in time, to reintegrating back into and contributing to society," said a statement issued on the behalf of the men and their families.
The high-profile case began in 2005 when Indonesia caught nine young Australians trying to smuggle 8.3kg (18lb) of heroin out of Bali strapped to their bodies.
The eight men and one woman were arrested at an airport and hotel in Bali after a tip-off from Australian police.
The case made global headlines when two of the gang's ringleaders, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, were executed by firing squad in 2015 - sparking a diplomatic row between neighbours Indonesia and Australia.
Other members of the Bali Nine - most of whom were aged under 21 - were handed sentences of either 20 years or life in prison.
The case put a spotlight on Indonesia's strict drug laws, some of the most stringent in the world.
One of the nine, Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen, died of cancer in prison in 2018. Shortly afterwards, Renae Lawrence, then 41, the only woman among the group, had her sentence commuted after spending almost 13 years in prison and returned to Australia the same year.
Indonesia did not commute the sentences of the remaining five, now aged 38 to 48, and they were transported back to Australia as prisoners. However the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has reported that the men are effectively free to live unhindered in Australian society.
Matthew Norman, Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen, Si Yi Chen and Martin Stephens in a cell they awaited trial in 2005
The five are banned for life from entering Indonesia, a spokesman for the government there said in a statement.
On Monday, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he had spoke to several of the men's "grateful" parents.
"They did a serious crime and they have rightly paid a serious price for it. But it was time for them to come home," he told reporters.
He said the deal did not come with conditions or favours Australia would have to repay: "This is an act of compassion by President Prabowo [Subianto] and we thank him for it."
The men and their families also said they were "immensely grateful" to Prabowo.
They also thanked the lawyers, diplomats and government figures who had helped advocate for them over the past two decades, before asking for privacy.
"The welfare of the men is a priority, they will need time and support, and we hope and trust our media and community will make allowance for this."
The five men are being put through medical checks at Darwin's Howard Springs facility - which was used for quarantine during the pandemic - and will begin a voluntary "rehabilitation process", Education Minister Jason Clare said. It is not clear what that entails, or how long the men will stay there.
He added that normal visa processes would apply to any Indonesian family members of the men, who did not follow them to Australia.
The Bishop of Townsville, Timothy Harris, who has supported the families of Scott Rush and Michael Czugaj since their arrests, said he immediately called Scott Rush's father Lee when he heard the news.
"Their lost son has come home... of course they're elated," Bishop Harris told Guardian Australia.
"Every day of the last 20 years has been a nightmare for them."
However he said it would take time for the men to heal from their experience and reintegrate into society.
"They're coming back home, but they're coming to a home which they don't know," he told the Nine Network's Today Programme.
"They've paid for their crimes and I hope that our system and our people and our attitude of compassion can surround these people now and... give them what they need to help them along in that journey."

Only Indian Tourist
In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift in the dynamics of global tourism, with one particular group making its mark more prominently than ever before: Indian tourists. Once confined to domestic travel or nearby destinations, Indian travelers are now venturing further afield, exploring diverse cultures, landscapes, and experiences around the world.
India, known for its rich cultural heritage, has long been a hub for domestic and inbound tourism. However, with rapid economic growth and a burgeoning middle class, there has been a significant expansion in outbound tourism from the country. Indians are increasingly seeking international travel experiences, propelled by factors such as rising disposable incomes, greater exposure to global destinations through media and the internet, and a growing appetite for exploration beyond borders.
The global economy, particularly in foreign countries economy is facing a great slump and moving on an indefinite path The expenditure of individual in foreign countries is getting under tight scrutiny due to the limitation of earnings and future uncertainties in the economy.
The effect of economic bump first shows its effect on disposable income, which means the income which was done in order to satisfy a want instead of need is been cut down or been limited with some heavy restrictions, such as in China, where the number of foreign tourist outbound from China is greatly reduced. From nearly 155 million outbound tourists in 2018, it has now been reduced to estimated 130 million in 2024 and it was just 90 million in 2023.
But due to great economic performance by India, Indians are not facing this dilemma; instead, India is on economic rise and emerged as a bright spot of light in this darkness of economic slowdown, Indians do not only show willingness to spend heavily on domestic trips trips but also on foreign trips
In the age of social media, foreign travel has become aspirational, especially in Tier II and Tier III cities and towns. A rising middle class is willing to spend on foreign travel.
Due to these heavy pockets of Indians, several Foreign countries have given visa-free access to Indian in order to fast-track and ease the process of Indian traveler in their respective countries, Such nations are Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Russia, Iran and Kenya, and they all have announced this policy within the past 8 to 10 months, making it clear that Indian tourist spending is really the sparkling thing in current global tourism economy.
A major reason why foreign countries, big as well as small, are courting Indian travelers is China. With the reduction in the number of Chinese tourists, the world is looking at India.
A FICCI report titled “Outbound Travel and Tourism: An Opportunity Untapped” estimates it will touch $42 billion by 2024, with the number tangling around 40 million Indians, which was $28 billion with 27 million Indians spending abroad in 2019. Spending by Indians on travel and tourism, which includes domestic and foreign, is predicted to hit $410 billion in 2030, a surge of more than 170% from $150 billion in 2019.
These visa free arrival schemes in multiple countries have not only enriched them with Indian tourists but have also enhanced the soft power of India in geopolitics and enhanced the passport ranking of India from 90th position in 2021 to directly 82nd position in 2024.
A growing Indian economy can spur investment in tourism infrastructure domestically and internationally. This includes the development of airports, hotels, transportation networks, and tourist attractions, which can enhance the overall travel experience for Indian tourists and make international travel more accessible and appealing.
Economic prosperity can foster greater cultural exchange and connectivity between India and other countries. This can lead to increased interest in international travel among Indians, driven by a desire to explore different cultures, cuisines, and lifestyles.
India has a large youth population, and young people are more inclined towards travel and exploration. As this demographic bulge moves into their prime working and earning years, the demand for travel, both domestic and international, is expected to soar. The population is young, with the median age at 27.6, “more than ten years younger than that of most major economies,” McKinsey said on its website. “What’s more, consumption of goods and services, including leisure and recreation, is forecast to double by 2030.”
As Indian tourists continue to spread their wings and explore the world, they are reshaping the global tourism landscape in a pro-Indian way. With their curiosity, enthusiasm, and spirit of adventure, Indian travelers are not just visitors but ambassadors of their culture, country, and global tourism economy. As we look ahead, the journey of Indian tourists on the global stage promises to be one of discovery, connection, and mutual enrichment for years to come.
Considering these factors, it’s likely that Indian tourists will continue to increase in number and possibly dominate certain international tourism markets in the future. #OneNETnewsInvestigates: Australian Teenager's Solo Escapade Issue in Bali, turned into an inspiration of a Hollywood Movie?
(Written by Anne Savisa Boonchuy, Jackie Lynn Thomas, Clyde Marcus McBride and Stella Zhau / Group Investigative Reporters of Disney XD News & Nickelodeon Action News)
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA -- In a story that reads like a real-life version of Home Alone, with its similarity of 'Kevin McCallister', a 12 y/o boy from 'Dapto, New South Wales' in Australia managed to flee his home after an argument with his mother and travel alone to 'Bali, Indonesia'. The escapade has raised profound concerns about child safety, airport security and parental challenges. An in-depth look at how "Michael", now at the age of 18, managed to execute his audacious escape, what came next, and how his adventure was received globally. This meets no introduction as our joint investigation of 'Disney XD News' and 'Nickelodeon Action News' for OneNETnews, with team coverage on the double from Indonesia and Australia.
The adventure began in mid-March 2018, as reported by the local Australian news station '9 News: Perth' via public affairs news programme 'A Current Affair', when Michael had a heated disagreement with his mother and was subsequently grounded. Frustrated, he devised an intricate plan to leave his home country. Using his mother's credit card and tricking his grandmother into providing his passport, Michael made his way from Dapto to Perth via train transport. From there, he booked a low-cost flight on Jetstar Airways (which under the parent company 'Qantas'), bypassing multiple security checks with ease.
Remarkably, Michael evaded detection by customs and security officials, despite being flagged for previous runaway attempts. Armed with his mother's passport, a secondary school student ID, and his paid boarding ticket, he checked in via a self-service kiosk and passed through the security gates without any questions from the airport staff or the Australian Federal Police (AFP). He then boarded the 4-hour flight to Bali undisturbed.
Upon landing in Denpasar City, Michael seamlessly passed through Indonesian immigration. Local airport officials, apparently unaware of his age, stamped his passport without hesitation. His journey continued with a Go-Jek motorbike ride to the 'All Seasons Hotel' (ASH), now known today as Ibis Styles, where he posed as an independent tourist. Unexpectedly from our joint-investigative news team of our media colleagues for OneNETnews, his parent's mom supposedly lived in Bali and waiting outside to pay a visit to spend 4 days at a hotel room. Renting a motorbike without a license, as well with the helmets on, and even trying alcoholic beer for the first time, which way below the age limit requirement in the Indonesia law.
Michael's days were filled with sightseeing, shopping, and swimming in the hotel pool, particularly at the beach. He was mostly just relaxing there, without any troubles. '9 News: Perth' obtained the exclusive video on social media, Michael self-posted the video of his antics in the hotel pool before silently turning them over to the local police in Bali and officials of the 'Indonesian National Police' (INP).
All of the sudden, the Bali police nabbed Michael at the 'All Seasons Hotel'. Police have yet to deport him back to his home country. The local police in Bali were eventually alerted by the AFP after Michael's family tracked him through his phone on social media via Facebook (before transitioned to 'Meta Platforms Inc.' [MPi] in late-October 2021). Nyoman Wirajaya, who is a Chief Police Commissioner in Bali, recounted the moment authorities found Michael in Room 115 of the ASH: "We had been waiting like a couple of hours in the hotel, together with the IFE, and also the Consular General, then he came back from the beach. When I came to the hotel (at 'All Seasons Hotel'), and he smile, very nice and cute, as usual as a kid you know. I keep him in a special room in my staff room. He is not in the jail because, he is a teenager. We are not allowed to arrest, nor committing crimes also in Indonesia", Wirajaya stated.
Michael's family, anxiously worried and rushed to Bali to take him home. His parents had to face the son's doings, as well as international legalities that were now thrust upon them. The ASH, under pressure from the authorities, permanently evicted Michael from the hotel premises. The family later checked into the 'Melasti Beach Resort and Spa' (MBRS) to reconcile and prepare for their return to its home country in Australia.
The case was severely criticizing 'Jetstar Airways' and breaching securities at Australian airports. Therefore, Jetstar revised the policy on handling unaccompanied minors, in order to prevent similar issues. Similarly, The Indonesian National Police (INP) also revised their process of checking for minors traveling alone. In spite of irresponsible and unlawful acts, Michael opened up a very big gap in international security systems while traveling.
Michael's story garnered international media attention, including right here in the Philippines, and his life story will soon debuting a new Hollywood film in the United States of America (U.S.A.). Paramount Pictures secured the rights to his tale, with plans to release the film 'Runaway' around 2030 or so. With the coming out of Coronavirus Disease-19 pandemic (CoViD-19), which already back to normal worldwide, production was held back a bit, but it was still looked forward to widely.
The escapade cost Michael's family approximately AUD8,000 (or nearly PHP296,000). Paramount Pictures has pledged to cover these expenses through trust funds tied to the film's gross production by the legal age of 21 in 2027. This silver lining to them affords a worst case, but still life-changing moment for them.
Michael's journey from a 12 y/o boy to an unintentional symbol of child autonomy and security measures broke its laws, has been in the imagination of viewers everywhere. His actions were surely irresponsible, but they threw light on systemic weaknesses and prompted serious discussions about safeguarding children.
With 'Runaway' finally hitting to debut in theaters worldwide, much still in development, Michael's journey comes off as a thriller, and at the same time brings up the issue of how parents and institutions are held responsible in safeguarding the lives of the Australians.
