National Hot Buttered Rum Day! The history of hot buttered rum is a long and storied one, dating all the way back to the early days of American Colonialism. According to one popular legend, hot buttered rum was invented by none other than George Washington himself! The story goes that during a particularly cold winter at Valley Forge, Washington’s men were struggling to keep warm. In an effort to boost morale, Washington ordered his cooks to make a special batch of rum with butter and spices. The result was an instant hit with the troops, and hot buttered rum has been a winter favorite ever since. We can thank our early ancestors for the tradition of hot buttered rum. During the mid 1600’s, Jamaica began exporting molasses, from which rum is distilled, to Colonial America.
