(Famous for her attractive appearance and gothic punk fashion, all the spikes and leather belie a loyal and kind-hearted woman. If one wishes to improve their wardrobe, Kirumi will always be there to help, with her knowledge on all matters fashion. However, while she may normally be passive and obedient, let's just say that this leather hides silk, which also hides steel.)

Rantaro Amami, Ultimate Zither Player

(While infamous for his travels and the wealthy family that he is a part of, Rantaro is even more famous for his innate talent in playing the many instruments of the zither family. Rantaro is known amongst the class for his bountiful wisdom, his coolheadedness, and his attractive appearance. I have a question for you about your opinions of Kaito. I've seen that you say he's homophobic and all that, but there is something about that statement that really bothers me. In his Love Suit Event, it heavily implies that Kaito not only has romantic feelings towards a very clear male rival, but also wants to win the plane race to earn the right to confess those romantic feelings. A lot of people see him as gay or bi coded, so I thought I'd ask what you thought about that.

I’ve been thinking about how to reply to this ask for a little while now, and I think I’ve finally got my thoughts all laid out. This isn’t meta, but my response will nonetheless be somewhat long, so I’ll be putting most of it under a read-more.

Anon, I’m really not sure what to tell you. Me saying that Momota has homophobic lines and behavior isn’t just my interpretation or opinion; it’s an actual fact that he does say homophobic/transphobic slurs in the game. Not in his FTEs, not in his love hotel or salmon mode, but in chapter 2 of the actual game, directed specifically at Korekiyo. The word specifically is “okama” (オカマ), and it has a very heavy and unfortunate history as a slur in Japan used predominantly against gay men and trans women, who as I’ve stated, are unfortunately often lumped together and assumed to be “the same thing” by cishet people.

I’ve had people spread misinformation about this slur, claiming that he used it in the chapter 3 trial instead and that that’s why he was being so derogatory to Korekiyo instead, but this is factually untrue. He uses this slur in chapter 2, well before Korekiyo murders anyone and before he’s revealed to be incestuous and a serial killer. And even if it were true, trying to justify the usage of homophobic and transphobic slurs with “well the person he was saying them to was a bad person so it’s okay” is a fundamentally flawed way of thinking.

It’s also a fact that he reacts with complete disgust and is horrified by even the idea of Saihara potentially coming on to him during one of his dates in salmon mode. He specifically says, “you don’t swing that way, do you!?” while using his most horrified sprite, and unlike the slur, the localization did more or less keep this line.

Again, there have been people who have tried to argue that this was simply because Momota was “sad at the idea of Saihara coming out without telling him first,” and again, this is factually untrue. Both the localization and the original Japanese dialogue of the game make it explicitly clear that he is completely grossed out at the idea of Saihara being attracted to him. This isn’t my personal interpretation or anything like that; it’s quite literally in the text.

I went and reread Momota’s love hotel to refresh my memory of the scene, and... I’m really not sure where you’re getting that he’s referring to a “very clear male rival.” He is certainly referring to a rival as his “ideal romantic partner,” but he never says anything at all about said rival’s gender. There’s absolutely nothing in the scene itself that ever specifies that he’s seeing Saihara as another guy.

In fact, for all that he talks quite enthusiastically about his rivalry with this person, he never once says any of his usual lines about “a man’s passion” or lectures about the way “men should behave.” Considering a good part of his interactions with most of the other male characters in ndrv3, not just Saihara, often involve him talking about what is or isn’t appropriate for a man (Hoshi’s suicidal tendencies are “effeminate” and unfitting for someone he looked up to, Gonta crying in the investigations is “unmanly,” etc.), I would actually say that it’s more likely he isn’t talking to another guy here, but this is just my speculation and it’s open to interpretation if nothing else.

However, it is a fact that just because Saihara is playing the part of his rival in his love hotel scene does not automatically mean that said rival “must be a guy.” Saihara plays the part of literally everyone’s ideal romantic partner in every single love hotel scene, and in most of them he’s very clearly being perceived differently than he actually appears. Hoshi, for example, is pretty clearly seeing Saihara through the lens of his dead girlfriend who he mentions in his FTEs, despite not ever explicitly referring to Saihara in his love hotel event as a man or a woman.

There’s no denying that Momota’s idea of romance is linked with passionate ideas about rivalry and competition, and that he likes grand gestures. But again, there is nothing in the text whatsoever about his rival being another man. That part is purely speculation, and nothing in the actual love hotel scene ever states that.

In my own opinion, I cannot agree with saying that a character who canonically uses homophobic slurs and reacts with open disgust to another guy coming on to him is “coded” to be gay or bisexual. Coding is the deliberate placement of subtle clues and details woven into the text to clue readers in that a character may be a certain sexuality or gender identity. With rare exceptions (like Mac from It’s Always Sunny, who by this point has been confirmed to be a gay man on the show), characters who use homophobic slurs aren’t usually “coded” to be gay or bi.

If anything, I feel that the trope of “homophobe who’s secretly a closeted gay man” does more harm than good to the LGBT community, implying that we’re responsible for the violence and prejudices used against ourselves. This trope also reassures other people whose prejudices and homophobia might be less outspoken that they’re not “really” showing any homophobic behavior or attitudes because they’re not outright saying slurs or showing their disgust, and leads them to assume that they’re not complicit.

I also feel that it’s worth pointing out that being a member of the LGBT community does not excuse anyone from homophobic or transphobic behavior, either. Having grown up in a highly conservative and deeply homophobic household, I understand perfectly well what it’s like to grow up closeted and repessed about your own sexuality. But brushing off the use of slurs directed at other people and saying that it’s okay because the person saying those slurs eventually came out is... not a great look, honestly. Even previously-closeted LGBT people still have to be held accountable for their behavior and for the harm they might have caused other people with their actions. There is no “free pass” for saying slurs to other people.

That being said, if people want to headcanon Momota as gay or bisexual, that’s an entirely different matter. Headcanons are separate from coding and are simply a matter of personal preference. Again, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to reclaim a character and actually show them growing from and apologizing for their past behavior. I can understand people who might relate to Momota’s better qualities, and who want to interpret his character in a positive way.

But it’s important in making these headcanons to not erase the fact that he did, canonically, say a homophobic slur, and to not speak over other LGBT people who are understandably uncomfortable with this fact. Just because the localization erased said slur entirely doesn’t change the intention of the original dialogue, and it doesn’t change the way Momota consistently reacts negatively to the idea of other men showing any sort of attraction to him that isn’t purely “bros being bros.”

I’m absolutely not trying to be harsh or dismissive here anon, and I hope I’ve been clear with that in my response. Again, if other people want to headcanon him as gay or bisexual because they love or relate to his character and want to see him grow from his flaws, that’s totally fine! But he’s in no way deliberately “coded” to be gay or bisexual when there are multiple instances of him having homophobic behavior in the actual, canon text.

『rantaro amami』

if we’re being real, he’s definitely a bit awkward about it. not that he dislikes it, he just likes to keep these sorts of things exclusive to romantic relationships. if you want to cuddle, you’re going to have to initiate it yourself. due to his caring nature, he’s pretty cooperative and lets you get comfortable against him. rantaro never moves without your direction. he prefers that you move his arms to your liking or tell him verbally how you want him to hold you. on rare occasions, you might feel vibrations of his chuckle as he tells you how his best friend is “such a baby.”

『kokichi ouma』

he’s aggressive with his cuddling. since he doesn’t show how much he appreciates you too often, his cuddles feel like extreme bursts of friendly love. it’s uncomfortable and unexpected, almost as if you’re getting pounced on by a large dog. nonetheless, it always makes you smile. he actually relaxes when you spend time like this together. no pranks, no condescending remarks. just your cute best friend snuggled in your chest. kokichi isn’t scared to leave a kiss or two on your cheeks, either! try not to let it get to your head though; if he sees your red face, you’ll never be able to live it down.

i don’t think he really understands the concept of platonic cuddles. the majority of his knowledge on physical affection has been categorized under his “romantic activities” file. even after you explain yourself, he’s still uncertain. the boy is a straight-up block of metal, he’s worried you won’t have the experience you’re imagining. overtime however, kiibo feels more assured. he turns on his heating function, holds you nice and close, and locks his sight on you. deep talks while you’re trapped in his arms are his favourite. he’s also got a little obsession with you combing your fingers in his fluffy mop of hair.

『gonta gokuhara』

if he wasn’t the ultimate entomologist, he would be the ultimate cuddler. his huge frame and loving personality are the perfect combination for the number one cuddle buddy! he likes to hold you like a teddy bear, and can become absorbed by your warmth against his chest. i’ve always had the impression that he’s a talkative cuddler. he becomes vulnerable in these situations, and will reveal his personal turmoils while drawing pictures on the small of your back. despite being the perfect guy to snuggle with, you and gonta don’t do it often. if only both of you could stay awake.

『shuichi saihara』

similarily to kiibo, the thought of cuddling with a friend hasn't occured to him before. he suddenly treats you like a glass art piece whenever you want to be snuggled up with him. his hands hover above your body, his grip so light you barely feel his weight. rest your head on his shoulder and you'll have a front-row seat to the detective's reddened ears. shuichi prefers to focus on trying not to look as if he's enjoying the activity, so he doesn't talk a lot. if you speak, however, he's all ears. it helps him take his mind off of his thumping heart and sweaty palms.

『korekiyo shinguji』

korekiyo is absolutely not into the idea. hell, he wouldn’t even cuddle with an actual significant other. cling to his arm, jump on his lap, bury your face in his shoulders; he won’t give in to your calls for attention. he’ll even have the audacity to glare at you silently the whole time you’re on him. don’t worry though, the guy’s not heartless. no matter how much he hates it, he won’t shake you off. still, it can be a frustrating venture. your best friend rarely stops working, meaning you’re going to be constantly dragged around his office. at this point, cuddling with a pillow is probably the ideal option.

『ryoma hoshi』

cuddling ryoma is a nostalgic experience, you hold him tightly against your chest like a stuffed toy. he likes when you play with his fingers or pat his head. resting his chin on your arms might cause him to dose off if he’s not careful. when he falls asleep, he’s similar to a cat. bumping your hand, subtle sounds, quiet switches in position, the whole package. i think he enjoys being babied a little; it makes him feel cared for. but don’t do it frequently! he wants to be seen as a friend that’s reliable, not relied on. that’s probably why he agrees to cuddle in the first place.

『kaito momota』

the moment you befriend him, you unlock the kaito momota cuddling feature. he does it absentmindedly. slinging his arm around your shoulders can become hours of his legs entangled with yours. he’ll play with your hair, initiate small talk, maybe leave a few pecks on your forehead if he’s really in the mood. he’s just an affectionate guy, whether you’re his friend or his lover. since he doesn’t realize what he starts, he’ll be shocked when you point it out to him. feeling himself blush, kaito removes his limbs off your figure and apologizes awkwardly. he always looks cute like this.

NDRV3, end of 5th trial

I’m remembering that you like NDRV3 now, which assumably means you also like DR in general??? Hence what I like to refer to as- The Three Hopes AU! Because I don’t have a better name, and we were shafted when they didn’t let Kaede be a protagonist and get called a symbol of Hope (yes I’m still bitter). Also this gets kinda dark- Which is fair, I think, it’s DR- But it’s probably coming dangerously close to that Yandere Mariharem AU of yours.

So! Here, the casts of DR1, SDR2, and NDRV3 are combined in one Killing Game, turning them into a 48 person group and therefore upping the amount of killings in that timespan- Assumably, the NDRV3 group becomes another class that attends Hope’s Peak. Like in canon, however, everyone has their memories wiped, so they don’t actually remember being classmates or friends.

Since so many people are participating in the Killing Game, there are some modified rules and patterns- There are more trials (anywhere from 9 to 15, depending on how you’d like to play things), and the number of survivors would also escalate, though it still feels like very few in comparison to how many people started (again, anywhere from 9 to 15, probably- They’re solid numbers, I can’t help it).

Also as a result of so many people, three groups end up forming- Initially, they were formed before the Killing Game was announced, and each faction would be headed by one of the protagonists (Makoto, Hajime, and Kaede). There’d be sixteen people per group, just to keep it even, and different people from each class would be in different groups. I’m still torn on why the factions would form, though- Either they’re formed by the students themselves, just to keep track of everyone, and Monokuma just rolls with it, or maybe the Mastermind splits them up? Either way, it’s against the rules to attack people in your faction, because that just seems like something Monokuma would do to get more despair.

Here’s where it gets... Darker. See, I feel like the large groups, and the splits, when combined with the isolation and the motives and the fact that some of the people there aren’t exactly stable, would... Ah. Become a bit fanatical, when it comes to what they might come to see as a figurehead for their group. It isn’t an immediate things, to be clear- It’s brought about through a lot of stress and desperation and the need to cling to something, more than anything.

Which. Basically makes Kaede, Hajime, and Makoto the targets of a bunch of platonic and/or romantic yanderes, I suppose- Depending on what you ship, or just what you think is interesting. Whoops? Either way, Monokuma isn’t above using them for motives (IE- Someone kill someone else or your leaders will all die).

This sounds like a really cool idea. We love the yanderes and dark here!

The first thing that kinda worries me is the large cast. This is 48 characters to develop and, with three protagonists, you’d be constantly be switching between point’s of view. Of course, protagonists don’t have to be the same as point of view characters, so you could switch the PoV each chapter? Just to give each character some screen time. 

I’m curious about why factions exist rather than how they’re formed. It’s really weird that there are three separate leaders when everyone should be unified by the goal of escaping. Perhaps the mastermind chose them? Maybe only the group leaders can officially vote at trials; like, the group will decide who they want to vote for and the leader is supposed to choose what the majority wants?

(I think the game Zero Time Dilemma does something similar to this? Three groups that have a leader and the leader needs to choose to kill another team or not). 

How long a would this killing game last? assuming there’s a trial every 5 days, that’s 45 to 75 days! 

What’s the motive behind the killing game? is it the same as DR1, where someone just wants the world to witness Hope’s Peak suffer? 

Team opinion time:

A bit curious who the mastermind is if Junko is on Makoto’s team.

I was a bit confused as to why you put Komaeda on Kaede’s team, but thinking about it, it makes sense. She is the only protag with a real talent after all, since Hajime doesn’t know his. 

Put Byakuya on either Kaede or Hajime’s team--he’s the type to try and overthrow the leader, and those too would actually stand up against Togami (which would make for a great “falling into yandere” moment for him). 

Assuming members choose their teams,  Fuyuhiko could go to Kaede’s team bc she looks kinda like his sister and that makes him want to protect her.

You could do a star crossed lovers thing, where two members of a canon-ish couple are on two different teams. This forces them to confront the feelings they have for their partner and their leader. 

Mikan should be on Makoto’s team. He’s really nice and caring, which would bring out her obsessiveness quickly.

Hi, you don't have to answer this question! But I'm very curious, mainly cause I want to hear your opinion on them. But, what's your thoughts on Ryoma Hoshi? ^^

Heyya! I’ve been meaning to get around to this actually, I love questions like this! 

Ryoma Hoshi! I think he’s a great character! When I was about to start NDRV3, I saw Ryoma and went, “oh great, a small perverted character who is for comedy relief probably” like the typical ones you see in anime and stuff like that. Like Teddy from Persona 4, for example. 

BUT BOY WAS I PROVEN WRONG RIGHT AWAY 

And I’m glad they didn’t go that route and made Ryoma entirely different. Just goes to show; don’t judge a book by it’s cover. I would say the same thing for  Gonta, bc he looked very intimidating, but he’s just a gentleman. Gentle giant,, 

Before officially giving my thoughts on Ryoma, I spent a while researching and watching the free time events on him, so here’s my thoughts; 

At first, meeting Ryoma was surprising in the prologue; 1. he had a deep voice. 2. Ultimate Tennis Pro who states that he’s no longer that ultimate but “his empty shell” And me, being like, “dam, that’s edgy” and the more and more “edgy” he got for me as the story continued on, with him trying to sacrifice himself so everyone doesn’t get killed in Chapter 1. The whole argument in the cafeteria with Rantaro, yanno. But at that point, I stopped seeing Ryoma as this “edgy character” but as a character who is,,,just sad. Especially when this is his reason, HE should be the one to be sacrificed. 

Which no one should take lightly, and there is a reason this character THINKS he has no reason to live anymore. We go into chapter 2, and when Ryoma states he wants to see his motive video and Kaito gets angry bc he perceives Ryoma as someone who has no will to live. And interesting how Ryoma reacts to this as, “No will to live? Hmph. if that how you see me, then so be it”. Which is kind of a different tone to in the first chapter when he stated he had no reason to live. 

But, how I see it, there’s a difference between Ryoma’s REASON to live and his WILL to live. You get more into Chapter 2, and Ryoma shows signs of actually not planning to throw his life away, and you get more attached and understanding to Ryoma. He even states, “I’m not stupid enough to throw my life away.” and when Gonta spots Shuichi and Ryoma, Ryoma escapes before saying to Shuichi, “sorry, but there’s still things I got to do.” There is a WILL to live from Ryoma, but it’s often shadowed by his reasons to live. 

Now, we go into the backstory; Ryoma had a future bright ahead of him. With a promising career with the profession he loved, Tennis. And Ryoma even had a girlfriend when he was in America for “studying tennis” aboard. Ryoma says he never believed in love until her, so this relationship must have really meant A LOT to Ryoma. The mafia invited Ryoma to an underground tennis competition, where the rich bet on who will win, etc. He didn’t want to at first, but the mafia was just persistent, so he eventually accepted. The matches were fixed though and Ryoma won against the opponent he was SUPPOSE to lose to. Just to get the mafia ruin for their reputation. Ryoma states that he was VERY naive back then. Which makes sense for a young teen suddenly put in this frustrating position, where all Ryoma knows is to play tennis the way he knows how and loses. But he’s an ultimate, he’s not suppose to lose. But that doesn’t mean Ryoma did this intent bc he was salty or whatever. It was just very unfair and probably felt dirty to him, just no respect in tennis (if that makes sense), so of course he’d win on purpose just to resent the mafia. But due to lack judgement before making this decision, Ryoma would learn to regret this decision. As the mafia MASSACRED his family for revenge. Which is REALLY brutal. 

You find this out in Ryoma’s free time events, after getting a third friendship fragment. The only one in Ryoma’s life, was his girlfriend. But for her safety, Ryoma told her to run away, but the mafia found and killed her. At the end of the fourth free time event, Ryoma says that he should have stayed with her then that way “she wouldn’t have been alone.” Ryoma blames himself for the deaths of the people he loved and who ever loved him. And rightfully too, but it doesn’t mean everything was his fault. He just carries the burden and wanted to get revenge; which is why he killed the entire mafia. (Which I still find weird how he can with tennis but he is an ultimate) 

With more burden to carry with lives he took away, and Ryoma was on death row until he got put into the killing game. I can imagine all the hopes, dreams, or whatever leave once you’re told you’re set to die. And you wouldn’t even bother caring if there was “nothing to live for” which being Ryoma’s family and lover. No wonder Ryoma was willing to give his life away in the first chapter, Ryoma was told he would die before this and being put in a killing game?? He’s going to die either way, so he felt the need to sacrifice himself as something he can maybe repent or not be alone anymore. But whether Ryoma tried to push or suppress and even put on a mask, Ryoma still had a WILL to live. He still had the passion of tennis, but suppress those emotions as punishments for his wrongdoings. And that’s a lot to do to yourself. Ryoma denied this will to live, but maybe started to accept it. Especially after Kaede’s death and her hopes to escape with everyone. 

And later on, he sees everyone (including Shuichi, who Ryoma knew was the most affected by Kaede’s death) try to go on and escape. Then it’s a given that Ryoma starts to try and find a REASON to keep his WILL to live. That’s why he’s so desperate for his motive video as well. To find someone cares for him, it’s not like he had family ALIVE for the motive to give Ryoma “the most important IN HIS LIFE”. Because the most important people to him in his entire life have died. Perhaps he was just trying to find maybe one survivor of his family in the motive video, or maybe big hopes to see his lover there. But when he saw no one, it just confirmed that everyone he cared for is dead. 

Ryoma is a sad character when you go in depth, he’s a person who had everything and lost everything over one mistake. And blames himself, carries the burden, and is told he is going to die. There is a lot on this character’s shoulders, it’s a shame he went the way he did. But in the end, when he lost all hope, he still thought of others than himself. Kirumi had everything to live for, and Ryoma had nothing left. Nothing left that he saw anymore, but I believe he could have a reason to live. HONESTLY, IF THERE WAS NO KILLING GAME EVERYONE WOULD BE HAPPY, YEAH? But with Ryoma, these were friends that were starting to help him find importance in his life and I can definitely see everyone helping Ryoma get back into tennis. Something he loves. (Especially Kaito, I see Kaito really pushing trying to get Ryoma back into it if he can haha) 

Ryoma is definitely an interesting character with a tragic backstory. But still had strength left in him, and wanting a reason to keep his small bit of will to live. Ryoma deserves a lot of love,,,

Interesting take, Ryoma looks at Shuichi at a new light in Chapter 2. He goes on to even say this; 

“It’s like your eyes have stopped focusing on the past…” 

Perhaps Ryoma saw himself in Shuichi once Kaede died, someone who was close to Shuichi in Chapter 1. Shuichi lost someone he cared for, like Ryoma did. WOULDN’T SAY ROMANTICALLY BUT I KNOW THE GAME PUSHES FOR SAIMATSU. I do like Saimatsu, but I always like “whatever ppl ship him with here teehee” So for here, Ryoma just saw some resemblance, and probably figured Shuichi was going to lose hope like he did when losing someone. But Shuichi learns to move on for Kaede’s sake. (And the rest who died, in the upcoming chapter, he states that they should all live for the people who died, and amen. I’ll drink to that, Shuichi) Shuichi hasn’t fully stopped focusing on the past at this point of the game, Chapter 2, but Ryoma sees he’s trying. And probably gives him more thoughts on maybe,, he should let go of the past too.
