TotK Impressions: Day 2

So I have an anxiety disorder, and money is a big trigger. I was lowkey expecting to have money-related intrusive thoughts for like, at least 3-5 days after buying Tears- despite knowing I could afford it- because that’s been my experience after moderate-to-big purchases. Sucks, but it happens.

I haven’t had any. I’m sure some of that is therapy but also the game is just that fucking good. I can see- and feel- the six year development time was not wasted. It is absolutely worth the money.

Okay, here are more impressions, and a mild Age of Calamity ~conspiracy~:

Dude the NPCS are SO MUCH FUN. Here’s a couple of my favorites so far:

Penn the Rito reporter! His design is so cute and I love his enthusiasm.

The people in the Castle Town hub are great, nice mix of BotW NPCs and new ones. The fact they were all so relieved to see Link alive was a nice touch. Also thank you devs for giving us a better home base.

I found a drummer who is part of a traveling band that performs at horse stables! Haven’t gone to Woodland to see them yet, but the fact they exist makes me VERY HAPPY!

The Sheikah elders arguing whether fighting offensively or defensively was great lol.

Some of them even react to the odder fusions! I fused a ring garland to a shield for the aesthetic

THE MONSTER HUNTING SQUADS. I LOVE THEM. WE’RE BROS 4EVER.

Okay regarding the monster hunter squads: I feel like maybe they were inspired by Age of Calamity? The UI for the fights is very similar to the ones in AoC. I do know they used the BotW engine to develop AoC, so it’s possible some code sharing happened. I have no proof, but it would be cool if AoC influenced TotK’s gameplay!

The Castle Town fort is great, I love that we have a more expansive homebase this time around. And the fact that everyone knew Link or knew of him was a nice bit of polish.

Speaking of homebases, yay the Hateno house is standing! I was a little disappointed it’s called Zelda’s House instead of Link & Zelda’s house, not gonna lie. But I know they’re trying to accommodate as many players as possible, and new players would just not be familiar with that sidequest. Plus, not every BotW player finished the house! I’m kinda glad they don’t assume tbh, and they left it open enough that older players can still assume Link is living there too.

The bit about Zelda staying in Hateno to help establish the first school is very sweet. Perfect bit of characterization for our researcher princess. I have a lowkey headcanon that Link is staying in Castle Town to head the surveys & reconstruction while Zelda works more on social program in Hateno, and they meet up as often as possible.

Okay back to Castle Town, I’m glad the giant telescope is more usable this time lol.

I looooove the Skyview Towers! The launch animation is so much fun, and I like the fact Purah reused the Sheikah tech to build them.

Although why did she reuse the Guardian legs specifically to HOLD DOWN LINK TO PREP HIM FOR LAUNCH. Girl that was unnecessary! You could have given him more warning!

I love her new design, of course. All the Sheikah designs I’ve seen have been A++.

When I got attacked by the walking trees for the first time I actually yelled “What the FUCK” out loud LMAO. I was NOT expecting to be attacking by the goddamn forests!

Horriblins also made me jump. But MAN their designs are SO COOL.

The monster designs in general have been top tier, give those designers a bonus because damn.

THE DEPTHS ARE SO FUCKING COOL. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. THE AESTHETIC, THE DIVE DOWN, THE PLANTS, THE CREATURES, THE POES!! POES ARE BACK!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH I WANNA BUILD A HOUSE DOWN THERE!

Also the running joke of Link startling people near the edge of the depth chasms is really charming, heh. Feral gremlin man is gonna feral gremlin.

Anyways I just got to Hateno last night, so I’m gonna bother more villagers and then maybe double back to Impa to start the obvious successor to the BotW memory quest. Or maybe I’ll go to Lurelin and beat up pirates. Or go back to Kakariko and dive into the big giant chasm that Naydra likes to fly into.

Hmm idk what to say actually lol. They're really cool and good people! And they've put up with me for SO long even during times where I was an idiot with a death wish, 4ever grateful.

It's largely thanks to the power of friendship that I got into drawing as much as I am! I got bullied as a kid and got VERY defensive of my interests and basically anything I enjoyed, used to hide my sketch books and whatnot. But I met my friends in sorta-high school anf they were all drawing and making OCs and watching cartoons- stuff I was too afraid to do openly or even in private- and I got swept along for the ride lol. They are the horse girls gently coaxing me closer with treats and acceptance saying "we're not so different huh girl?"

2 of them are listed as my uh, like, emergency contacts? For if anything happens to me, bc they're basically family! I'm very About found family BC I relate a lot and that's basically my friends to me.

We also played D&D together, some of us still do, so we're constantly creating stuff together. You haven't known fandom like 7 artists playing with their characters and being intense about it, there is nothing like it, we were content MACHINES for our own lil game lol

T my friend T from Life follows this Tumblr (hi t hiii) and encouraged me to pursue my sudden DR dreams! Also one of the first allowed to know my JoJo pages bc he is trustworthy. He played DR when it was big on Tumblr I think, he's also gonna enable me some more w the anime and game 3 so you can thank him for any content that comes from that 💖

Okay this one is earlier and I know they did a lot of Wicked but I am honestly every day in disbelief that they didn't cover I'm Not That Girl. Rachel would sing that about Finn and Quinn in a heartbeat. And then at some point Quinn would've sung the reprise about Finn and Rachel. Literally so obvious, idk what they were thinking??

a stupid stubborn sort of vow

an AsuRei fic, 1.5k words

Summary: After an emotional confrontation between Asuka and Hikari over the latter’s moving away, a confession goes badly and  Rei finds herself having to comfort a miserable Asuka, her sworn rival. Vows are exchanged, of a sort.

(au detail: modern au, set during community college, no evangelions, au to be named soon)

It was precisely 7:32 PM, Friday, a mild September night. Rei left her window open, as ever. She didn’t have a particular fondness for the night air; she was indifferent, as she was with a laundry list of things.

That list was waning, though, thanks to the person who was now occupying her thoughts, as she did jarringly often nowadays.

Asuka Langley Soryu. Her rival. Nemesis. Adversary. Enemy, opponent, opposite... match, even. The first time Asuka declared she hated her, Rei had expected their petty rivalry to stop in a month. Asuka’d move on to the next annoyance, the next thing to be furious on, and Rei would be left behind as ever, ready to proceed on her way.

But Asuka stuck. Through third grade, fourth, fifth, all of middle school and now two years of high, Asuka was a thorn in Rei’s side, and Rei a thorn in hers. Rei supposed Asuka was, aside from her brother, the closest thing she had to a friend.

And Asuka loved to argue.

So the duo whiled away the nights over the years making up a host of feuds. Any topic that came to mind, Asuka’d take a stand on, Rei’d pick something opposing and stick to it as much as Asuka stuck to hers. 

Asuka loved pop music, the kind she could dance to. Rei picked classical, the only kind she listened to. Asuka preferred magical girl anime, Rei decided she prefers shonen. Asuka argued the best fruit was apples, Rei countered with pomegranate. Sometimes they’d spend a whole evening trying to come up with what to fight over and end up dozing off side by side on Rei’s bedroom floor.

Tonight though... well, tonight, Rei hoped Asuka wouldn’t come. Not that she didn’t look forward to another bout with her, of course. But, well...

She put her book down for a moment, marking it with one of Monday’s completed worksheets, and picked up her phone. No texts from Asuka. She tapped the contact regardless, and stared at their brief exchange from that afternoon.

Asuka: sayin googbye 2 hikari 2nite Asuka: *goodbye, FUCK Rei: Ah. Asuka: leave the window open ncase i fuckup Rei: I will. Good luck. Asuka: fuck u wonder girl Asuka: dont need ur luck Asuka: seeya, h8 u 4ever Rei: You too.

Rei treasured those interactions. But she knew Hikari was more important to Asuka. Sometimes, when they went on hikes to out-endure each other or exploring abandoned buildings to see who chickens out first, Asuka’d ramble about how long she’d had a crush on her best friend. How much she wanted to kiss her, hold her hand, how she was sure Hikari’d be the one to always stick with her, the one she could spend the rest of her life with.

Needless to say, Asuka had been pretty pissed about it. And paranoid, and stressed, and panicked, and above all sad. Rei knew by now how to tell apart the various shades of anger on her emotional palette, but the past week had seen a roiling blend of all the worst.

Rei placed her phone back down on her desk, an island in the void of mostly empty space, and picked her book back up. The Horse’s Song, another in her carefully organized shelf of nondescript books. So far it failed to provoke anything, but the clipped pace and strange dialogue kept her attention well enough. Asuka would tear the book a new one, if Rei convinced her to read it. She’d save that idea for another topic-less day.

Seven pages further in, a sound split Rei’s concentration. The clang of someone tripping over that bucket Shinji still hadn’t found a place for. A scream of “FUCK!” Hard footsteps on the grass.

Rei put aside her book, turned her chair to the window and placed her hands on her lap.

After a few moments and a series of loud slams, Asuka’s hands slammed onto the windowsill. The paint on her nails was chipped. She groaned and slowly lifted herself up, eyes fixing right on Rei’s. Her expression twisted into her customary glare, but wavered, unable to stick in its natural state. Her makeup ran like a storm drain down her face, blue eyes red from crying, hair clips barely holding on. Her cheek bore an unexpected bruise.

“I’m here.” Rei softened her monotone, hoping that the sentiment overcame her blank expression. Evidently it passed muster; Asuka’s glare shifted slightly, her grimace twisting into a sweet sneer.

“Yeah, I can— Ugh,” Asuka grunted as she clambered the rest of the way through the window, “I can see that, Wonder Girl.” She kicked off her shoes and flopped back-first onto Rei’s bed.

“Your makeup’s running.”

“I know.”

“You were crying.”

“I know.”

“You have a bruise.”

“I KNOW!” Asuka snapped, bolting upright. “God, you really are a robot, you know that? ‘Scanning rival, injuries detected, initiate snide remark protocol’. Ever thought about talking like a person? Asking what’s wrong?! Or hell, maybe I’m lucky you’re a robot in a meat suit, any rational human would’ve slammed the window on my goddamn hands so thanks for being a freak I guess!”

Rei paused for a moment, weighed her responses, and settled on, “I trust you too.”

Asuka took this about as well as a sucker punch. She gaped, eyes wide, balled fists going slack.

“You— wh, what even, I’m— what?!”

“The bruise,” Rei veered the subject ninety degrees, “where’d it come from?”

“Wh— oh.” Asuka covered her cheek with her hand, staring pointedly at the nothing on Rei’s walls. “...Hikari.”

“You fucked up?”

“No!” Asuka snapped. “...well, I did, sure,” she admitted with a glower, “but so did she!”

“How.”

A miserable smirk cracked across Asuka’s face. She spread her hands as if to announce exactly what wasn’t up her sleeve. “So, picture. Me, helping lug all her stupid luggage into her dad’s car. Hikari sticks behind, looking up at me, class-prez poise and a shy little grin on her, okay, gorgeous face. I’m trying not to cry. Turn to her, about to ask if she’s gonna keep in touch.”

Rei nodded, eyes focused on Asuka’s. 

“And...and, like a stupid jerk, she fucking— she kissed me!” Asuka said, with the same level of incredulity as someone discovering they’re an elf. “She kissed me, and she said that she l...lov...lo...” Asuka sputtered, “liked me!”

“Oh no.” Rei could already tell where this was headed.

“And being me, I just had to panic. I don’t remember everything that happened, it was kinda a blur! But I remember...my hands were on her shoulders and I was...god, I think I was begging her not to go.” She tch-ed. “Pathetic of me. Disgusting, really. No wonder she clocked me.”

“Liar.”

Asuka gave Rei an utterly withering look, but Rei continued. “You aren’t pathetic. Or disgusting. You’re Asuka. Those words aren’t compatible with Asuka.”

Asuka’s look softened instantly; Rei could see the beginnings of tears prick her eyes again. “Goddamnit, Wonder Girl. No, you know what? Get over here.” Asuka patted the spot next to her on the bed. Rei obliged, leaving her chair to nestle in just close enough to not upset Asuka. To her shock, though, she felt Asuka’s fingers ghost along her palm... then grasp it like a lifeline to her last hope of salvation.

“Wonder Girl. Ayanami. ...Rei,” Asuka began, and Rei could tell her teeth were gritted. “You and me. Our whole...our whole rivalry. How the fuck long are we gonna keep this up?”

“When you stop caring,” Rei said instantly, the response one of the few she never thought she’d need but prepared for the sake of it. “When I’m no longer useful. When it doesn’t matter to you.”

Asuka’s answering laugh was the hollowest Rei’d ever heard.

“Right then. Then... then I’ve got an idea.”

Rei tilted her head and Asuka took it as her cue to continue. “What if... what if we swear on it?”

“How?”

“Easy, stupid. Here, I’ll go first.” Asuka scoffed, then put on her most arrogant affectation and proclaimed, “I, Asuka Langley Soryu, promise to forever be your rival, your foe, your most trusted enemy, to hate and to keep. I swear to follow you, Rei Ayanami, to the end of the world, through thick and thin, of spite and sheer devotion.”

Rei hummed for a few moments in response. “...I, Rei Ayanami, promise to forever be your rival, your foe, your most trusted enemy, to hate and to keep. I swear to follow you, Asuka Langley Soryu, to the end of the world, through thick and thin, of spite and sheer devotion,” she parroted back, meaning every word with her whole, dull, robotic heart.

Rei knew Asuka would never let her see it, but she could feel her smile radiating out at her. 

The two girls laid there, for what could have been a minute or an eternity (but was precisely eighty-seven seconds). 

It was a vow they both intended to keep.

What about virgil finds a kitten and asks remy to help him hide it from their landlord?

Remy woke up to the sound of fast and desperate pounding on his door. He blinked his eyes open, pushing himself up on his elbows and patting the carpet beside the couch for his sunglasses. “Coming!” The knocking kept coming and Remy groaned, finally finding the glasses and pushing them on clumsily. 

“I said I’m coming! Hold your damn horses!” He got off the couch and stumbled over to his apartment door, blinking the sleep from his eyes as he did so. Remy yawned, taking his sweet ass time because whoever was at the door had woken him from a nice nap, and opened the door.

On the other side was the cutest sight Remy had ever seen. Virgil Shae, Remy’s Darling little kitten, was cradling a tiny little black kitten with white patches of fur under their eyes. Virgil’s hoodie was off and wrapped around the kitten, most likely to shield the kitten from the rain from which Virgil was soaked from head to foot.

“I need help,” Virgil gasped. The poor dear was shaking and had an unhealthy flush to his cheeks, his makeup running down his cheeks from the rain. Oh, Remy just knew that he was going to be caring for his sick friend soon. “Please, I found her behind Patton’s bakery and, and she was gonna get wet! I-I now that our apartment doesn’t a-allow pets but,”

“Get in here,” Remy hissed, grabbing Virgil’s arm and pulling him inside. He poked his head out and looked both ways, only closing the door when he was sure that no one had seen Virgil or his new friend. He turned back when the kitten started mewling and gave Virgil a fond and exasperated look. “Gurl, I knew that you were a softie but I never would’ve taken you for the type who goes running through the rain to save baby kittens.”

Virgil glared up at him, though the fact that he dripping on Remy’s carpet lessened the effect. “She was going to die if I left her there! And she was all alone and I think that she was abandoned!” His angry expression melted away and he was looking up at Remy desperately. “Please, help me hide her from the Landlord. I’m not going to give her up, I can’t!”

Remy sighed and reached out, gently taking the kitten from his friend’s arms. “Alright, Darling. You go into my room and change into my pyjamas, okay? They’re in the bottom drawer of my dresser, go on then.” He gently pushed Virgil in the direction of his bedroom. “I’ll get some tuna for your new girly here to eat. Go on, you’re getting my carpet wet.”

Remy sighed and held the kitten, Lilith, up to his eyes. “You’re gonna cause a lot of trouble,” he said sagely. The kitten placed a damp paw against Remy’s nose and Remy narrowed his eyes. “You know that, don’t you?” He sighed. “It’s just right for my troublesome little kitten to find another troublesome little kitten.”

Background

When Rhodanthe was only six years old she was cursed by a jealous wizard named Rothbart reasons remaining vague to this day. Several years later she was left in Merlin's care to hide her from Lord Ffarquad (I think that's how you spell his name). For a time she struggled to adapt to being forced into a swan form every night, using developing senses to forage for food, improve her swimming skills, and communicating with other swans.

Shrek the Third

Rho js shocked she she sees Shrek showing up at her cottage with Artie asking for Merlin's help. Rho offer to help Artie learn how to be a real hero if they help her break her curseby searching for the Lady of the Lake, the one person that could help her break her curse. Together the quintet travel to three locations: barren wasteland, a giant date tree in the middle of the desert, and a mountainous region. Throughout their journey they are pursued by fairytale villains who try to attack them at every turn. The first attack happens in the barren wasteland where they are saved by the Black Knight.

Who then proceeds to chase them off.

The next location sees them trudging through the desert. That's when they see the giant date tree and climb it, eventually showing up at the giant's house and discover that the Holy Grail is hidden among his many goblets. The giant warns them that drinking water out of the wrong Grail will poison them. Artie manages to pick the right one by chosing the plainest looking cup and drinking out of it, coming away unharmed.

The third trial occurs in an abandoned mine that they discover are filled with crystal geodes. While walking around inside, they are greeted by illusions of their deepest desires: Shrek for his swamp, Donkey for his horse form, Puss for his treasures, Artie for his father's respect, and Rho for her human form. After much internal conflict all five reject the illusions, this passing this test.

Walking deeper into the mine, they find Nimue's place at the end of the cave. Nimue was Merlin's ex lover who left him before he and Rho met, and they present her with the Grail. Suddenly the Black and Green Knights show up before Nimure reveals them to be her brother and sister-in-law, who had been staying with her to avoid Lord Ffarquad's laws, something Rho knows all too well.

Nimue expresses her gratitude but tells them that Artie needs to pass one more test in order to prove himself worthy of being king. She sends them back to Far Far Away and that's where they find out what to st Charming had been doing. In an added twist Charming reveals that he had met his father for the first time and that he had been helping him take over the kingdom.

Shrek gives himself up to save the human teenagers and they escape. Donkey and Puss gets thrown in jail with Fiona and the other princesses and Rho hides out while Artie decides to just leave, feeling that he is still unworthy of taking arms against his rival.

The night of the play (Shrek's execution) the heroes plan on barging in to free him. Donkey and Puss persuade Artie to come back to help them. He and Rho makes up and decide to do a little research on how to beat the villains. By then Rho is back into a swan and she is assigned aerial patrol in case something goes wrong.

The play starts, Charming gloats about his killing of Shrek, until he gets ambushed by the freed heroes. Before long chaos erupts and though the heroes put up a good fight they are overwhelmed by the amount of villains and monsters. Just then Artie arrives and manages to talk the villains down. Charming tries to discredit him only for the younger man to ask if his father was so concerned for him, how come he was never there in his life before, or even when Charming's mother died.

Everyone is shocked by his question and Charming asks his father what was Artie talking about. Realizing that he couldn't hdie behind his lies anymore, Charming's dad reveals himself to be is none other than Uther Pendragon (Artie's real dad). He confesses that he was using Charming to get the throne having been seething in hate for years that he was passed over for a frog (Harold). He also admits to have been the one responsible for Fiona's, seeing her as an obstacle in his crusade to take the throne. Uther made up a cover story about a witch and ran off, eventually meeting Artie's mother and staying with her a few years before dumping her too. Godmother was not in on the plan as Uther had stolen one of her potions to get back at her; she had wanted for Charming and Fiona to marry naturally but Uther's actions put a wrench in her plans that she ended up spending years trying to remedy. By then Rho arrives and hides herself among the large wooden boards on the ceiling watching the confrontation with worry and interest.

Charming denies this by saying that Uther cared about him enough to support his acting career, only for him to laugh and say that he only stuck around to see if Charming inherited his mother's powers. Seeing that he didn't he tells him that he was nothing but a weak fool, easy to manipulate ans that he will be doomed to be just that: a weak-minded baby. Disheartened by his father's true intentions and words, Charming decides to finally act his age for once and tries to hand the crown back to Artie - the rightful ruler - but suddenly Uther snatches it out his hands and places it over his head. He then tries to persuade his younger to join him.

Artie rejects his father, pointing out that Shrek had been more of a father to him in a week than Uther had his whole life. Furious at the sheer audacity Uther grabs Charming's sword and tries to kill Artie. Afraid of seeing him get hurt, Rho swoops in and defends Artie from his own dad, but in the scuffle she is stabbed. Angered at such a sight, Shrek takes the sword away from Uther and corners him near the wooden tower on stage. Dragon knocks it down with her tail hoping to crush the evil former heir apparent but luckily the window goes over him and he lives, albeit shaken up and he is taken into custody.

Desperate to save his friend, Artie rushes to to the royal fountain (the same place where Harold and Lillian first met) and places her in the water. Because of her sacrifice, as well as Artie's heroic actions during the journey and the play, she is revived and reunited with her new friends.

Artie decides to stay and be king. Rho goes to Camelot to complete her classes as a mage like Merlin. After the Camelot seniors graduate, Artie inductd the Hero's Journey as a special course to see who will be a part of his new initiative: The Round Table

After his brief stint in jail Charming is pardoned and he takes over his mother's company and turns it into a beauty emporium. He used his mom's final spell to cure Rapunzel's baldness. Uther is sent to jail but while he awaits his trial he meets Rumple and they make a deal. This leads to the fourth movie, which happens differently

Shrek Forever After

Three years pass and Artie has settled into his new role as king. It is now time for the triplets' third birthday and Shrek is all but stressed between being a parent and people who just wouldn't leave him alone about his past.

Artie is pressured to get married and Rho is his first choice. But his advisors don't want him marrying a commoner, partly out of fear of having a repeat of the Harold & Uther feud. Rho meanwhile is uncomfortable with the idea of marriage and royalty, and confides in Fiona that while she does love Artie, she doesn't want to rush into a union just yet.

At the party the Roar incident happens and Shrek storms off. Rho goes to comfort him and they encounter Rumple, who try to sucker them into making a deal but they firmly say no. Undeterred by their response Rumple grins and says that it doesn't matter if they say no because somebody else already made the choice for them. Before neither of them could react Rumple casts the spell, sending the entire world upside down.

Waking up to find the timelines completely altered, Rho and Shrek found out that Uther had taken over the kingdom. They have to find their lost friends and family to stop Rumple and restore the timeline. But first they have to evade King Uther's top enforcer Black Knight (who is far more deadlier than the Black Knight from rhe main universe)

Notes

I probably wrote too much about Rho, so I'm going to leave it at that. I'll be making separate pictures for what she looks like in the fourth and fifth Shrek movies. The events of the movies occur differently because they were mediocre and needed a lot more spice to flavor them up . I added tbe three trialz to give Artie stronger characterization as well as giving Shrek, Donkey and Puss some development.

Rho is his love interest but they aren't going to get together that quickly, which makes them different than Shrek and Fiona as they got married at the end of rhe first movie. Charming survives in this AU because looking back on it, there really was no need for him to be a villain, and I was sad that he died. Considering how his father was never mentioned and how Artie's father was often brought up, you'd think they pull a twist like they're half siblings or something (which would have been an awesome if obvious twist given that they look alike). There's also won't be a love triangle, because Rho is aware that the Artie/Guinevere thing is poppycock, and that her eventual ploy with Charming is just to get the obsessive Mordred off her back.

Future

In Shrek 5 Rho and Artie are openly dating with talks of a royal wedding. Uther escapes and meets up with Rothbart (the guy who cursed Rho as a kid) and they try to ruin the young couple's future. Meanwhile there's this weird prophecy about Guinevere and Artie being soulmates but it's clear neither of them like each other in that way and Lancelot is the guy Guinevere truly loves. Lancelot gets development going from an arrogant man to someone more humble and wise.

Shrek 6 would be when Rho and Artie tie the knot, which will be the end of the "King Arthur" trilogy. I haven't yet decided on a villain, but it would probably be Mordred. Mordred has eyes for Rho but she only sees him as a friend, so yeah, Mordred will be the Hal Stewart/Titan/Tighten of the film that Rho hopes her magic will be enough to stop him! Charming being her "love interest" is just a later ploy to trick Mordred into thinking she's marrying Charming, but in reality she's with Artie and Charming, being an actor, would be playing along. She did this to get the obsessive Mordred off her back and to low key protect the kingdom while Artie is away on his adventure. I picked Mordred as the final villain because in Arthurian Legend King Arthur's story usually ends with him and Mordred fighting to the death (don't worry Artie doesn't die).

I really want to see more serious Shrek fanart and OCs beyond parody Sues and memes, which was why I spent hours and days working on Rho's backstory.

Summary: Young Stefen found out someone was looking for him and decided to lay low, avoiding the mysterious stranger in red, so he’s never taken to Haven by Bard Lynnell. It was an unfortunate decision, but in spite of it, he’s in a better position to help Vanyel when he really needs it. 

Basically a redo on the ending. ~55k words

Summary for anyone who doesn’t know the series but is curious: in the country of Valdemar, in a world of magic and gods, Heralds are the protectors of their land, Chosen by and partnered with Companions, magic, telepathic ‘horses.’ (Yeah, I got into this when I was a ten year old girl, why do you ask?) Each Herald (and Companion) is unique in terms of exactly which Gifts they have and how strong they are, but the rarest is the MageGift, what most people would consider actual magic.

As the sheltered son of a minor but landed noble, Vanyel Ashkevron dreamed of being a Bard. His father wants him to stop his silly dreaming and step up as his proper son and heir. Finally fed up, he sends his fifteen year old son to his sister, Herald-Mage Savil, a powerful member of the Heraldic Circle at the capitol in Haven. There Vanyel faces the death of his dreams when he’s tested by the Bards, humiliation, and an aching solitude worse than he’d known at home--until 

he’s finally brave enough to let Tylendel, a Herald trainee and his aunt’s star pupil, into his life. 

...for a while things are great. They have to keep the relationship hidden until they’re both of age, for fear of their families pulling them apart, but in the meantime their relationship only deepens, to the point where they realize they’re lifebonded (basically soul-mates). Then things are not so great: Tylendel dies, Van is mentally fried by Tylendel’s miscast final spell and has all of his magic potential (which probably wouldn’t have ever manifested otherwise) turned into full-blown Gifts. He wants to die when Tylendel does, but is Chosen by the Companion Yfandes and unwillingly begins his training to become the Herald-Mage his Tylendel will never get to be. 

Stuff happens, Van is basically never over his death wish but mostly subsumes it with his fanatical (and typical, for a Herald) devotion to duty. There’s also A LOT of angst over being gay and internalized homophobia from when he was a kid and his parents deliberately made sure he didn’t even know same-sex pairing was a possibility--Tylendel, out and proud, had been a real revelation.

In the last book Van meets Stefen, a young Bard trainee who’d been rescued from the streets and brought to the Bardic Collegium at Haven, and who had befriended and was sharing a room with Van’s nephew, Medren, also a Bardic trainee. He and Stefen hit it off, there’s angst about their age difference, angst about hero-worship and whether he’s taking advantage, and just ALL of the angst but Stefen eventually runs Van to ground and Van immediately realizes they’re lifebonded, gasp, shock. [Turns out Stefen is Tylendel reincarnated... sigh] Then they all realize that someone is killing Herald-Mages, and Vanyel is, in fact, the last, and he takes off chasing the culprit down. 

In my fic--oh yeah, that’s what this was about, huh? xD--Stefen was NOT brought to haven and he runs into Vanyel later, when Van’s already on his way to face the man who killed the Herald-Mages. It was a really dark part of of the books so it’s a pretty dark fic.
