Creepypasta: The Dionaea House (2004-2006)

I wanted to post a few of my favorite creepypasta/Weird Internet Fiction stories this month, so of course one of the first I looked up was "The Dionaea House." Dated somewhere back around 2004-2006, it's one of the earliest entries in the genre; I’m not sure how many people know about it now, but Back in the Day, it was one of the creepypasta classics. Then, while researching all this, I discovered to my utter astonishment that it was written by Eric Heisserer—who wrote the Oscar-nominated screenplay for Arrival and is currently best known here, I'd bet, as the show runner of Netflix’s Shadow and Bone.

Years ago, the story was at dionaea-house.com (now offline), and it was the kind of thing you'd stumble across somehow—maybe on a friend's recommendation, maybe from a forum discussion—and then lose yourself in for a whole afternoon. It starts out as the story of a fictionalized Eric posting the emails of an old buddy, Mark, who's trying to figure out why their friend Drew... snapped. And "Eric" is posting these emails because Mark now has disappeared. And before too long... someone else has to pick up the story. Because it turns out that, at the heart of the mystery, there is a house, and going to that house is a mistake. I would describe it a little like House of Leaves, except also smelling like cake, and projecting out to multiple locations rather than pulling you into one infinite labyrinth. Also, a shit ton easier to read.

Relatively speaking, at least. "The Dionaea House" started out as “emails” posted on a blog at that original URL [unofficial mirror], then spun out into a Blogspot, an AIM chat, two separate Livejournals, and multiple commenters interacting on them. Some of them seem to be strangers walking in off the street, as it were, but the trick is, we don’t know which commenters are part of the story, which gives the “flesh puppet” comments, for example, a weird jolt of realism:

(I would like to think ���TELL THE HOUSE TO FUCK OFF” is one of the in-story commenters, honestly; I like to think this is who I’d be in a horror story.)

So while "The Dionaea House" doesn't have the single-minded realism of "Ted the Caver," the blog-and-comment format—a found document subgenre for the 21st century—also allows for multiple perspectives. (I’ve lost count of the number of protagonists the house consumes, but it’s at least three, maybe four.) Tumblr is currently in year two of the Dracula Daily read-along, and I’ve always argued that Dracula was a techno-thriller for the nineteenth century: correspondence, newspaper articles, diaries, and even audio journaling on a phonograph. Emails, blogs, chats, phone messages, comments, and an article about the murder-suicide that starts the story—“The Dionaea House” is pretty much in the same multi-perspective, multimedia genre. Unlike Stoker’s bound novel, however, “The Dionaea House” wanders the physical space of the internet, and it trusts that either you'll see that the story has a new branch, or you won't, and that's okay.

In fact, I'm not sure if Eric Heisserer didn't know how to bring the story to a conclusion, or he got busy and couldn't keep going—or maybe there is an ending and I just never found it. (The Loreen Mathers blog doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me and seems like one giant loose end, although the mention of engineer-occultist Jack Parsons adds a new dimension at the last minute.) But as with "Ted the Caver," the lack of a concrete ending makes sense for a shaggy dog story like this, as frustrating as it might be. Maybe Loreen got got, just like everyone else! Isn’t “disappearing before explaining what the hell she’s talking about” exactly what that would look like? We don’t know! If there's a scary house and you manage to burn it down to the ground in a complex denouement, that's a story. If there's a scary house out there, somewhere, and we'll never know how it came to be or what happened to the people who tried to take it on—that's a creepypasta. That’s a legend.

I feel like Khun would take you to a fancy restaurant on the first date, but he'd much rather have a movie night and cuddle with you.

If you want to go to a restaurant he'll take you to one of the best in the tower. Ya know, the kind that serves fresh seafood. he'll make sure it has good reviews and might even have someone go to see if it's as good as people say it is.

If you go with the movie night though, it's a different story.

He will make sure to have all of your favorite snacks and drinks. He'll have candy and basically anything else you could possibly want.

He definitely wants to pick the movie, but he'll let you pick if you want to.

I can see him enjoying psychological horror, but getting annoyed at the same time because he's already figured out what's going to happen within the first five minutes.

He doesn't mind almost whatever genre you want. I don't see him as being one for romance or comedy, but if it's what you want to watch, he's fine with it.

he would absolutely love it if you were to get scared during a horror movie and cling to him. I don't think he'd be the kind to jump or show that he's scared. The only way you could tell if he's actually scared is the way his eyes widen a bit at the jump-scares.

You and Khun are curled up with each other, under a fluffy blanket, covered in crumbs from all the sugary treats he brought you. Your legs draped over his lap as he leaned close to you and held the large plate of snacks on top of your covered thighs. the scream from the movie echoes through the living room while the two of you watch intently. You shiver a little as the suspense picks up to which he chuckles and rubs you back a bit, throwing a few smart mouthed comments your way as you watch.

Baam enjoys small picnic dates.

He'll definitely cook for you and he'll try to make whatever you want. He picks out the best spots he can find and you bet he'll lay down the red plaid blanket that he sees at all the picnics in the movie.

This cinnamon roll just wants you to be happy. He'll defiantly take you on whatever date you want, but his first choice will usually be a picnic.

If you let him, he'll probably cling to you the entire time(not me adding this because I love clingy and needy people).

You'll be sitting side by side with his leg draped over your lap and when he's done eating he'll probably rest his head in your lap, not caring if you're still eating or getting crumbs on him.

He most definitely enjoys peaceful silence, as long as you're okay with it, he'll space out, head on your lap, just staring at the clouds.

Wants to stay long enough to watch the sunset with you, but he probably gets tired of it's summer timer when the sun takes longer to set.

The picnic blanket becomes a regular blanket in the fall though, poor baby gets cold easily and even if it means sitting on leaves, sticks, and risking being a bug hiking trail, you let him do it anyway without complaint.

You and bam rest there, the food mostly gone as you watch the sunset from the hill you've chosen as your spot. The orange fading to a yellow and finally out to blue after a small ring of green. He looks up at you, moving his head on your lap as you run your fingers through his hair. The moment you look down, you're met with his tired little smile, the light shifting through his lashes to reflect in his half closed amber eyes, soft like a fire on a snowy night, a picture you want engraved in your mind till the end of your forever.

Tell me this man isn't doing a coffee date? Even better if he goes to one of those tea ceremonies only to mix in instant coffee when no one is looking.

He would probably choose the best seat in a shop, a nice quiet one by a window.

It's mostly likely mid day or a little later though he'd take you at 8 like a dinner date, but caffeine at that hour might just kill you though, he can handle it.

Will order for you if you don't know what you want, assures you you'll like it.

Might just fall in love even more if you take your coffee black, but if you take it light, he'll think it's cute and probably say some things about how you can't handle straight coffee...he's right.

Blood. You were stepping in… blood, and from the looks of it, it was a lot of blood. Someone clearly lost a lot of blood.

Your eyes filled up with tears and you instinctively covered your nose and mouth with your hands, doing so rather aggressively. You felt as of you lost your ability to breath, or it was stuck in your throat, as you did your best attempts to not scream out in absolute terror.

Slowly and steadily, you managed to gain control over your breath, and you began to follow the trail of blood, it went into the kitchen, and once you were in the kitchen, you saw something that was seriously terrifying. Where there was supposed to be a wall, was darkness, as much as you were telling yourself to not go any further, you couldn't help yourself but to, slowly but surely you inched closer to the darkness st the end of the kitchen, and the moment your stepped in, you couldn't contain your screams of horror, for all you saw was the skulls and skeletons of millions of humans on a pile, and on the top of the pile, was a man sitting there, as if those skeletons served as a throne for him.

Thoughts on Uzumaki the anime, now that it has completely finished airing:

Animation be dammed, I think they needed to give more episodes so that proper tension could be built and it not just be a series of "wow that's fucked up- wow that's fucked up- wow that's fucked up-" over and over.

That being said, from a very casual fan and from the perspective of someone that doesn't like horror- especially cosmic horror- this was decent for me. It's not quite the animated classic I'm sure a lot of people wanted- especially for episode 2- but it is a decent popcorn with friends type scary, imo.

Episode 1 was probably the best for obvious reasons, but truth be told, I was probably more unnerved for the hospital scenes. Genuinely, I felt a moment of fear and uneasiness - the scenes of people eating the snails in ep 4 is close, but 3 really fucked me up for that one scene in particular.

I do feel bad for the people that probably got screwed over and the people that were really hoping for a master piece- and DeMarco and Adult Swim better learn whatever God damn lessons they need to from this, because AS and Toonami already have a bad rep for animated originals. In the case of Lazarus, a 13 episode series scheduled for next year that they claim ALL episodes will be directed by Watanabe, they better make damn sure that goes off without a hitch, or risk losing opportunities in the anime industry going forward.

As for Uzumaki's story as a whole- I think I really appreciate Junji Ito's simple "hey wouldn't that be fucked up" approach to creating with a very simple concept. Some things definitely feel not scary at all, in particular the twister gangs- except for when they reveal pseudo cannibalism. That's not even the spirals' doing- in fact, the strongest horror in this series comes not from the spirals, but from the people themselves losing their god damn minds and giving into depravity and chaos. More than any jump scare or super natural being, I truly believe the most horrifying things to write with are with people and the horrible things they do to themselves or each other, and Uzumaki captures that.

The ending mystery is intriguing- but while I do understand that horror stories and especially cosmic horror rarely have happy endings, I can't help but wish for it. I think the ending is certainly just as terrifying, and the lack of solution- the exhausted acceptance of horrors beyond your imagination and knowledge that it is doomed to repeat forever- that leaves a very uneasy feeling inside of me. I personally don't enjoy this feeling, but that's certainly just a matter of taste and not a reflection of story quality- it's a fine enough ending for the genre and delivers on its job.

I don't think I'll watch it again, truth be told. It's not a story for me, and that's fine- again, just my taste, as I'm not really a horror fan anyway.

I think the most compelling things going for this anime is A. The gorgeous animation in episode 1 and the overall inky black and white colors, which really help build an atmosphere that would be list with color imo, B. The amount of people going for the manga will definitely increase, and C. The genuine curiosity about the production- what went wrong, why so many studios and an inconsistent quality. Perhaps someday an answer will be given.

I'll be honest, I kind of prefer the shitty live action movie if for nothing else that it was actually hilarious.

Anyway I'll give it a 6 or 7/10. Again, not for me, could do better with pacing, and an inconsistent animation quality can take me out.

how do you feel about them leaning into the horror genre in the future of watcher? i've been chatting to people who still support them after that podcast episode came out, and mostly people are disappointed with that decision, as am i. idk, i feel like i'm too old to enjoy paranormal horror and what attracts me to watcher most are their other shows, i'm less interested in seeing more horror content from them (the podcast also seems to be going in that direction)

Very good question, I hope you don't mind the answer being very long and going into details that not many people care about.

The TLDR version would be to tell Watcher that you feel like this. Tell them that you're here for your favorite shows that aren't the files. They seem to listen to the feedback, and I noticed in the comments of that podcast ep that many people feel like you. (Top 5 beatdown being the dark horse of a favorite show for some, Many Puppet History fans wanting to keep the professor on watcher despite the spooky pivot. I think they will listen to that because this episode opened up the discussion of what people really want, so we'll see.)

Also important thing is that if you're on the streamer then nothing will change. Steven's shows will be uploaded there, and Puppet History will air in January. My guess is that they want to see how it preforms to decide what to do with it later, but now that they started to even upload podcast eps ad-free I think everything will still be on the streamer. So if you're the subscriber to that then not much will change.

If you also want my personal feelings then they are that WWW is their best show, along with Travel season, and I still think those are the best shows that watcher has. Besides Ghost Files which I also really like so if I'm getting more ghost files in 2025 and it will be as good as season 3 then I have more positive feelings towards the change into spooky content.

But I'm a dedicated fan who signed up for the streamer, and I still think that goodbye youtube video is not that bad and is a fun making watcher finale. My opinion doesn't allign with majority of watcherinas, and I don't have all the facts. This is pure speculation based on what happened before but I'm also sometimes wrong so don't take this too seriously I just love being analytical about how people think.

And the facts are that Mystery files and Ghost files are their best preforming shows.

And also that the content they're makng is content that they want to make. I think that is a detail that flew over people's head, they are listening to the audience but they also lean into their little niches of interests. You can see that many casual fans are there for Ghost Files with the criticism for the streamer being "They only make 6 eps a year I'm not paying for that". For most people watcher is synonymous with the files and it's those people who bring in views and therefore money. (I'm not a youtube expert but I believe if you have sponsors in an episode then you're like "This video will get x many views, and thus a precentage of that are potential clients"). I think this is why some sponsored videos are pinned in the channel, and this is why travel season spicy ep has more views than the rest of the season, it was pinned there for some weeks, before their next sponsored video appeared. The fact that people are there for GF also shows by some people saying "I subscribed just for that", or most telling when the trailer dropped suddenly many people were in the comments on watcher tv sharing their enthusiasm.

Also if we look at the channel in 2023 compared to 2022, we can already see a very slow shift towards the spooky content.

I marked the shows considered spooky in bold to show you that the slow increase of them happened over the last three years, and that even if they premiere their "variety" shows that are not considered spooky they still need a spooky show to equal out the views. The simple truth is that shows without Ryan and Shane doing spooky stuff don't get the views even if they are beloved by some watcherinas.

Now what is the spooky content they're leaning towards? Let's see what they're saying.

"More Ghost files, More Mystery Files, more episodes of those and Are you scared, and also Ghost Files Alone which is not a series yet but one-off for now."

They're "doubling down" on making them which is also something they wanted to do, but perhaps didn't know how. I think this is an opportunity for them to see what works (And as Katie Leblanc said, it's also easier for their crew to not go from editing one show and then a whole different show. We know how much effort ghost files required so I think if they focus their energies into making the files verse then they're gonna be better for that. It is better to have one good show instead of many cheaper ones. My hope is that they know what they're doing in that regard, because if they're going to lower the quality of Ghost files to make more of the episodes then that's not something I'm interested in. But I don't think they will go that far)

As for the food shows going for another channel, this is sadly the reality of youtube. Just like the thumbnails for ghost files s3 on Youtube are Very Clickbaity, so is the almighty algorythm, not liking the variety that watcher produces. What do you mean one week you can have long hour video and the other only half hour? Why only one month is there food stuff, and the other some spooky stuff? This might be confusing to new audiences but also to youtube algho which is like "Produce more of the same thing, always". This is a thing that every youtuber talks about sooner or later, and why every youtuber has a second channel for more experimental stuff. Food and Spooky content doesn't mix well, so if watcher wants to make a second channel for food I do think it's for the best. Steven's shows deserve to be watched by people who like them, not hatebombed (and we can all agree that Travel Season got the short end of the stick this year. As much as I love that show, it wasn't fun to go into comments and see people disliking what they're seeing.)

I think also this is the basis on which they're making that pivot, and in the end this decision doesn't surprise me. They already made a separate travel season instagram account, to give a chance for fans to have something more fun, so I think this was a decision they came to quickly. Perhaps they wanted to see how everything performs, and had to wait half a year to see how things are. I think the reason they waited with announcing this change is because they had to have a plan and see what would work. As much as I think they should make a separate more concise way to announce the changes (I doubt many fans even know of the podcast ep, or were listening to the end), aside from their own feelings about it they had to come up with a plan on how to go from here. I also think that they haven't decided what to do until the end. Shane mentions that Puppet History MIGHT go somewhere else IF it doesn't fit. Those are hypotheticals, and nothing is set in stone. This is why I think it's important to let them know what you feel about their content going forward.

I also think the strategy of them going into more spooky content is underway in small ways we don't notice. Besides the slow increase in shows, this explains the bfu collab (follow us on watcher for more of the ghost hunts), even if Ryan admitted that they wanted to do this for a long time, and the crossover with a tv show that focuses on ghost files. So they are doing this but in the end it is more content for us.

As for Pod Watcher leaning into the spooky things.... well this is pod watcher and it's about what's airing on watcher. Their last episodes are themed like this because ghost files is airing, so they keep with the theme. I'm very interested to see how they will change the content once something else will be airing. Also they are film buffs and like scary movies. So no wonder they talk about horror films, that is their interest and they talk about "whatever is on our mind every week".

Lastly I also think that it's fine to not like or vibe with the change if you feel like that. People change, content changes, our interest comes and goes. Just because you were a fan of watcher in 2020 doesn't mean you have to like everything they do in 2025. I'm myself not sure how much this will remain my main interest, if I will be here for the next five years or maybe decide that the changes are bad and I've outgrown their content in the next half year. (I highly doubt it because it doesn't feel like it for now and I am excited to see where they go from here.) If it's a good idea or not, remains to be seen, but none of us have a crystal ball and can now in December 2024 say that this is good idea or ultimately bad. There are some people who think that the pivot is a great idea, and the nature of creators is that they want to evolve and grow and change. It seems that their goal is to make what people want to see and reach new audiences by making their most popular shows, and at the end of the day they are a business and need to make money from this. If they feel like this is what's gonna work then I can only believe that they know what they're doing.

Yanqing was taken very much off-guard by your love for horror, as you didn't seem like you were into things like that at first. He didn't think much of it either, mainly as he just saw it as something you really loved. And so, when you asked him if he wanted to see a scary movie with you, he obliged. He was confident that nothing could scare him anyways... or so he thought.

He died inside when the first jumpscare came in and felt his soul leaving by the end of the movie. He was practically unresponsive for a good 10 minutes afterwards, since he didn't expect it to be this bad... or well, bad in his terms, as the movie wasn't scary at all to you after all. You thought that it would be a good starter movie to ease him into the genre, but were clearly in the wrong.

Which is why you decided that video games might be a better way to introduce him to your love for horror. Who doesn't like games, after all? And surely that would be more fun than just watching a movie. Yanqing for some reason foolishly agreed once more out of his deep love for you and ended up wrapped up in endless blankets, leaning against you, as he anticipated the game to start. It was just a game anyway, how scary could it be?

Very scary, is the answer. Next thing you know, he was slapping his hands over his eyes and letting out screeches of terror. You didn't even get through the first level either. You decided to give him the controller, thinking that if he had more control over the game and, that he'll maybe enjoy it and find it less scary. But that resulted in your controller learning how to fly.

Alright, so, Movies didn't work... games didn't work... perhaps fake supernatural TV shows could? They weren't scary anyways and were all staged, so surely, surely, he'll finally begin enjoying something. And it started off fine enough. He didn't seem concerned, maybe found it even a little stupid and funny, when the actors were being obviously very fake with their reactions. But then the paranoia got to him and he began believing that every little creak and sound in the house was a result of ghosts haunting you two... A very grumpy Jing Yuan was definitely called in panic at 3 am that night and he was NOT happy about it.

Yeah... it's safe to say, that you've given up on trying to make him also love horror as much as you do. But that's okay, because he'll support your interests at all times, with all of his heart... from very far away.

...And Again Into the Light (Elucien)- This is a fic I cowrote with @crazy-ache. After our joint writing adventure where we wrote Dear Lucien, Dear Elain, we wanted to write together again. I suggested we write a horror romance story because I thought it would be a fun co-writing genre because we could leave each other with both spooky and sexy cliffhangers for the other to pick up. And that is exactly what we did. When we write together, we start with a basic idea and structure and we really "yes, and..." the rest of the process. I really like writing horror. It's one of my favorite genres and this was an opportunity for both me and Ariana to play around in that sandbox. And I think we did a DAMN good job at it. I think it's a pretty unique piece too, which is kind of a theme we've had in the projects that we've co-written. We both were really inspired by the idea of Elain and Lucien being trapped in a haunted house together, and what we ended up creating was a interesting exploration of the mating bond (because duh, it's them) on top of all the haunts and scares that were going on.

Kneel Before Me (Elucien) - I wanted to include this one because it was the first fic that came to mind when I read this question. I love this fic because both the inspo and the premise is kind of unhinged for me. This fic was entirely driven by fandom ship war wank. At the time, the new ship war topic of discourse was whether or not Azriel really could defeat Lucien in a blood duel, and the takes were driving me nuts. So, Kneel Before Me was me channeling my rage into art. The premise is Azriel and Lucien spar on the HoW's roof top and Azriel eggs him on into a real fight that tests the theory of who would actually win in blood duel like circumstances, followed by some hot Elucien smut where I might have went a little crazy writing an excessive paragraph long description of Lucien's dick because all of the bat boy obsessions, wing span jokes, and just generally people forgetting Lucien's existence and that he's HOT. And hey, look. I know when I'm cooking and I fucking COOKED with this fic. Even though I did tag it anti-Azriel because I wanted to be upfront that the fic doesn't depict him in a positive light, I've had a lot of Azriel fans read it and confirm for me that they don't actually think it's anti-Azriel at all and they like the twist I incorporated that made it all make sense and feel in character. Because even if I'm being a little cracky, I can't help but want things to make sense for the characters as they are.

Summer Heat (Elucien + Erixius) - This fic is my big multichapter fic that is now turning into a series with the sequel I'll write once I'm done with Pull Me in Deeper. The inspiration was really simple. One of my falling asleep day dreams included Elucien having some fun and awkward flirty moments in awkward and making out on the beach and I was like, "okay I keep thinking about this so I should write it." It definitely is an example of my first outline way underestimated the story it became. I didn't even initially have a plan to have a significant Eric x OC side story but once I created Alexius it really just became an animal of its own. This story I think is some of my best work in that it really spans the spectrum of my skills - comedy, romance, smut, angst, and generally a decent plot. It's the first time I made an OC. I did some new world building. And from experimenting with those the story blew up into something way bigger. I anticipate Golden Visions, the sequel, to be an even longer story which sort of gives you a perspective on how much I was inspired by both of those processes. At its core, I really wanted Summer Heat to be a romantic comedy. And I think it still has that essence but I'm not sure it can really be called that anymore with some of the angst and fantasy world building I built into it changed things. I also tried to write a slow burn for Elucien (and very much not a slow burn for Erixius) which I think I was successful at by my definition of a slow burn lol.

I contemplated not answering it before coming to the conclusion that there would probably be repercussions because of it.

"Hello?" I asked after answering the call.

"Hello, beautiful."

My blood ran cold and I could feel a layer of sweat bead my forehead. "Why do you keep calling me?"

"I love when you get whiney for me," The weird voice chuckled. "Why do you think I call you?"

"Because you're obsessed with me," I said into my phone. I had to sit down.

"Wait, you wouldn't, would you?" I giggled nervously and then the phone went dead. Fuck fuck fuck.

I rushed out of that grocery store without buying anything needless to say. As soon as I got in my apartment I went straight for the shower. I wanted to wash this feeling off of me; this feeling full of shame and betrayal. Had I really gotten off in a public washroom because of a stranger's voice and had they really killed someone because of me?

I scrubbed and scrubbed in the hot water for hours. I couldn't get rid of the feeling of how I enjoyed the thrill of touching myself in public for someone who wasn't my boyfriend. Didn't I have any pride? I loved San, I knew I did, so what was this new feeling? I was so absorbed in my thoughts that I never heard the bathroom door open until the shower curtain was roughly pulled back.

I screamed and turned around and then clutched my hand to my heart. It was only San. He cocked his head at me curiously, "What's got you so jumpy?"

"Why are you the only one acting like there isn't a killer on the loose? Why are you so calm?" I couldn't help but shout back at him.

"What's wrong?!" Seonghwa jumped into the doorway with one of my kitchen knives and had a full view of my naked body thanks to San leaving the door open and pulling back the shower curtain.

I screamed in frustration and jumped behind the curtain to shield me. "The fuck Seonghwa?"

Seonghwa stammered at the door, turning on his heel. "I-I’m sorry, I just heard a scream and I didn't think I just--"

"Don't worry about her," San dismissed me, "She's just jumpy about the killer still."

"Why did you bring Seonghwa back with you?" I demanded shrillingly.

"He's the one that convinced me to come back. I told him you were worried about being alone and we had a mini fight and--"

"--can you stop telling Seonghwa everything about us? It's like he's the third in our relationship!" I scolded San.

San peeked around the shower curtain and sent me a look full of teasing. "I mean, I didn't know you were interested in something like that, but we could talk it out."

"BOTH OF YOU, GET OUT!" I shouted with finality.

I couldn't look at Seonghwa the entire time we ate the wings the boys had brought home. Thankfully, he excused himself after eating and said he wanted to have an early night. San dissuaded him from leaving and insisted he slept on the couch at least. I left them nursing alcohol and muttering to each other across the table.

I turned in first, truly wanting this day to be behind me. I wasn't able to fall asleep though, being so jittery and my heart beating at the thought of what I did today. I faded in and out of sleep. I jerked awake when San's hand touched my back as he slid into the sheets with me.

"Babe, I'm sorry about today," San slurred into my back. My boyfriend was already touchy-feely as it was; add some alcohol in his system and he couldn't keep his hands off me. His nose rubbed against the back of my neck and his hands snaked around my waist. "Do you forgive me?"

"I just wish you would stop leaving me by myself. I hate being by myself," I whispered to him.

"I can make it up to you," San cajoled me, fingers playing with the waistband of my sleep shorts. "After you shower, you don't wear underwear to bed because it's healthy for your cute little pussy, am I wrong?"

My breath sped up but for all the wrong reasons. Why did everything have to come back this afternoon? "I-I forgive you," I sputtered out.

San huffed a breath of laughter against my neck. "Did you play with yourself in the shower? Are you sensitive down there now? Sometimes you rub yourself so desperately you're a little raw afterwards. Want me to use my tongue instead?"

"I wish it was your tongue tasting my cunt instead."

I shuddered. "Just wanna go to sleep," I whined.

San relented but couldn't help getting one last shot through. "Alright alright, we won't give Seonghwa a show to jerk off to. We aren't very good hosts, you know."

"San!" I spun around in bed to face him. "Wasn't he seeing me naked enough or do you not remember that?"

"Oh yeah," San said with a wry tone.

"Oh yeah," I mocked him, "Now he's gonna get even creepier with me."

"You're the one that thinks he's a part of this relationship," San raised a point.

"No, I said it felt like he was, seeing as how he knows everything about us," I corrected him.

"Come on, let's get some sleep. You can wake Seonghwa up with a blowjob tomorrow if you still think he's a part of this." San closed the conversation and snuggled his body further against me.

There's a post about how if people became zombies they would just continue going about their day-to-day lives because that's what their bodies remember. That is literally this book.

I found the synopsis to be rather misleading. It gives the impression that this book is a scary survival thriller, where the characters have to fight to stay alive, against terrible odds with heavy angst. While Ian, our main boy, does do some angsting, for the most part, this book feels really cute and cozy to me. The begrudging-allies-to-found-family pipeline is real and I eat it up every single time. The characters initially beef with each other upon meeting, but quickly bond over their shared circumstances (being abandoned, chronic illnesses, being outcasts). I liked how the author quickly established their personalities and circumstances, making it clear how their dynamic works from the get-go.

I'm sleep deprived and running out of steam so the rest of this review is in bulletpoints.

I didn't expect it to turn out the way it did, given the synopsis, which made it sound very ominous.

The Chronic Illness Rep

idk how accurate it is, as I have no first-hand experience

The synopsis says that Ian gets chronic migraines, but he is dead for most of the book, so he doesn't have any migraines in the story, but he also doesn't mention it ever

He does talk about his epilepsy though, but mainly in terms of how people react to him (staring, calling for an ambulance when he doesn't need it)

The synopsis says that Monica is chronically ill, though the book doesn't state exactly how, and she also uses a cane

Character Arcs

Ian's arc is mainly about how, as a chronically ill person, he struggles to take up space because of the guilt he feels from needing people to help him

I think Ian's arc was well-executed, but the arcs for all the other characters were lacking

I wish Eric could have gotten his own arc, he has a bunch of stuff that goes unaddressed

The Premise

The most unrealistic part of this book is that the dead people have oil for blood and the US government didn't round them up and throw them in the Oil Extractor 3000

The most realistic part of this book is that the government (belatedly) discovered a parasite in this town's water supply that turns people into zombies and instead of trying to clean the water or evacuate the townspeople, just told them to drink filtered water

Amount of Horror

Most of this book didn't read like horror to me, other than the light cannibalism

The last 10% is the most horror-y part, very trippy and strange, with more gory bits

Overall

This wasn't the best written book, there were some minor plot holes, and the character development could use some work

But! This was so entertaining and so much fun to read so 5 stars just for enjoyment reasons

A contented smile dances upon his lips as he savors the gentle kiss of an iced Americano. A warm aura emanates from his presence every time you smile back at him, sending a million translucent hearts above his head. 

Once again, his azure eyes, which resembled a deep ocean, fixated on you, scanning the canvas of your face. You could taste a glimpse of a playful tease whenever he chuckled or when he teasingly called you by the wrong name.

After months of entwining about him, William Birkin always invited the most charming smile in your life along with elusive mysticalness every time your sight line met him. You didn't know what it was. It just happened every time he was smiling. 

Is it love? Or something more blissful than love? 

"Ah, I'm not good at picking, sir. But I'm sure you would find so much fun in my video rental shop! But as for me, I love scary movies!" You calmly reply, avoiding direct eye contact.

William laughed and sealed your presence in his realm. He shook his head and locked your very essence. "No, please. I would like you to pick one for me. I usually ask my friends for movie recommendations, but they aren't available right now."

You found yourself unable to stifle fits of smile every time your gaze fell on his eyes. Well, you couldn't lie; William is your best customer, or more than a customer?

You step away from the cashier and approach William, gaining a better angle. He's taller than you, has beautiful glow-blond hair, and the warm scent of a summer night's mystery.

"Hmm... let me see. Do you like horror movies? Scary movies? Sci-fi?"

"I loved scary movies as a child." He winked mischievously. "But now, my tastes have changed. I love something beyond the realms of fear—a genre hard to articulate. How do I describe it?"

He shared his gaze with the entire shop, eventually settling upon racks with a romance section. He blinked and chuckled to himself, almost like a mocking giggle. You don't even understand what that means.

While sipping his iced Americano, his focus remained fixated on other racks and then turned on you again. 

"Well... how about a movie where the main character falls in love at first sight? A love story where the protagonist is in love with someone and captivated by their cuteness, their kindness, and their sweet aura. He always has a chance to meet them, even if it's for just one minute, which he will cherish forever. He wants to have an intimate relationship with them, but he's too shy to express his feelings because he considers himself a loser."

As William describes this imaginary plot, a gentle smile blossoms on his face, heightening your nervousness. A rosy blush graced your cheeks, enveloping your presence with the color red.

"You couldn't find a movie like that. Because that movie doesn't exist at all," his laugh reverberates, filling the romantic ambiance. "But what if we bring it to life? You and I are the main characters."

"Eh, what do you mean?"

"The plot I described is about my feelings for you. The only thing that could scare me is not finding a place in your heart. So what about you?"

How do you write horror?

I actually had like a conversation with my friends abt this a little bit ago so I'll talk about it here- this is a very broad question so I am going to answer it to the best of my abilities (like, how do I write vs. how do I write horror), so,,, pls be patient with me haha.

So, to kind of lay the groundwork I've kinda come to the conclusion that there are maybe 3 types of horror writers/ways to come at horror?? Or at least, that's how it gets categorized better in my head! Inspired by a post where someone described Jacob Geller as an architect's mindset, I think the 3 main ways to come at writing horror are as follows;

- The Language

- The Philosophy

- The Architecture

Keep in mind that this is all like ENTIRELY my own opinion and just how I come at writing my favorite genre, & I was/am an on and off fic writer and that's where most of my style was able to be developed!

Understandably these categories do seem a bit random but I think the example I can use best to explain it is gore, probably?

So with gore & body horror as an example, I'll go in the order of Philosophy > Language > Architecture for it to kind of make most sense.

Philosophy - Gore is many things. A lot of times the human mind meets it with, "that's wrong- that's wrong, wrong, wrong!"- and it gets worse with body horror, which seems to almost make an art form out of it. It is grotesque and obscene, and it forces you to be vulnerable- all things the mind hates. Organs that were never supposed to see the light of day are now being exposed to air they were never supposed to touch- and it's incredibly disturbing and upsetting because this isn't supposed to happen.... and worse, the longer you sit in it all, and you let it fester, it starts to become a "What really makes us human?" kind of thing. Everyone's reaction to the initial reaction to horrifying vulnerability of viscera is different.  Some curiously engage with it, some will become obsessed with how intimate it is, some will still desperately want to get away from it. It's always a fun little "how will I write these gore scenes this time" & understanding how I want ppl to react, which brings me to the next bit- language

(P.S. no body horror in it, but if you do want a good horror book that delves into like the "What Makes Us Human?" bit of things, I rec Obscura by Joe Hart!! like it literally becomes an overarching theme in the book! A+)

Language - I spend a lot of time trying to put human experiences down on paper, and it just... doesn't work because language as a whole is not enough of a vehicle to get across all of my thoughts and my feelings on this one subject- this one subject that is, undeniably intricate (no matter what subject it is, at any point in time). With body horror or just generally terrifying scenes where I really need to get across what exactly is happening and why it's so terrifying and you should be scared too- it helps to find words that are as specific as possible to the moment, especially with gore, because it forces the character(s) and the reader to be vulnerable. I focus a lot on character's reaction to things as well, as a way to convey like 'holy shit this is NOT OK!!! I am not cool with this!!', and really- it wouldn't be a good story if I didn't intrigue myself a bit imo- whether I terrify, or I scare, or I just get myself obsessed... understanding the concept of what I want to get across as much as I can, so I can then spend as long as I want trying to get it across as accurately as possible in a way that will have others sharing my fear/intrigue/obsession... that is my personal goal!

Architecture - Your terror needs legs to stand on. Your dread needs legs to stand on. Fear/scares can be induced from a simple movie's jumpscare, or a couple of terrifying lines that build a scene quickly and get the ball rolling- but for good 'ol gothic terror it's a bit of a consistent slow burn that slowly grows over the course of the story. It's usually why the gore happens towards the end of a story if it's the climax of the story, or, in other cases, gore tends to be used as a way to break a character. It's not only about the structure of the story, it's about the structure of the character. When you develop a character it's like you've carefully constructed a small building- and in this case, the gore scenes are direct attacks on where this character's support beams would be. A building within a building.... within a building...? If you will.

Kathe Koja's short story The Neglected Garden (Extremities) is actually a perfect example of this, as it starts off with the gore straight off the bat- and from there it's a slow decline (in this story specifically, it's akin to watching a team of workers construct a house incredibly quickly, then being like "it doesn't seem that sturdy-" right when a storm comes by and the house itself sinks and gets *really* fucked up... and then from there starts to slowly deteriorate and crumble.)

I think this applies to writers as well lol- like, I'm definitely more of a language oriented horror writer because of how much I focus on my vocabulary, my sentences, my prose, etc- and not even in a way where grammar is my strong suit. In fact, I am like, incredibly bad with grammar and this post is probably a prime example of it! but I really try hard to get across a concept/idea with the tools available to me and I try to expand those tools when I can, because it frustrates me when there aren't enough words in the dictionary for "he screamed".

Outside of gore and body horror, I usually have a concept, and then I write the scenes were I'm very into the concept of it and what I want to be portrayed... and then I start expanding from there and building plot, etc, until I eventually sit down and write it in it's entirety- so my personal order tends to be; Philosophy, Architecture, then Language.

(And yes, these are all just fancy words for plotting and drafting but they help me think about it easier so pls be nice to me LMFAO)

disorganized best (and worst) books/films/shows of 2024

I finished 68 books, watched 105 films and 35 TV shows, and finished 3 games.

Honestly, the math might be off because it turns out this was a terrible idea. At the start of the year I was like 'oh it will be fun to do one big list!' It was not fun to do one big list. It was really hard to keep count. I already have a plan for next year, it's going to be much more organized. If you can decipher these lists feel free to ask me for a review about any entry on the list.

This isn't really going to be a top 5 or 10 or anything because I felt like it would be more fun just to kind of highlight my favorites (and least favorites) rather than forcing myself to pick a specific number. Fits the theme of disorganization like the lists above.

Onwards!

I had a really good TV year, book and film were a little more meh, not a lot is sticking out in the same way the best TV shows are:

SILO!!! (AppleTV). I'll be real honest, I started watching this because post-Dune Part II, I had a crush on Rebecca Ferguson. It had NO BUSINESS being this good for a show I was exclusively watching disrespectfully for Rebecca Ferguson wearing tank tops. That doesn't usually work out this well for me. But it is so good. There are flaws but also no there aren't, because it's made so earnestly that some of the shakier acting performances and awkward dialogue moments just don't matter to me. It's almost like the shows I used to watch on SyFy Fridays except with AppleTV money and production values. Which makes it so fun.

Severance (AppleTV). This is where I really knew I was in trouble with AppleTV. I was not going to be cancelling that free trial. This show is SO good and I cannot wait for the new season in a couple weeks.

AppleTV honestly kind of killed it this year, I also really enjoyed Dark Matter and Constellation, which both meet my criteria for multiverse shows, aka 'could these be branches of The OA's multiverse tree'. I've also been really enjoying Shrinking, even though it's not my usual genre. I'm so mad I signed up for a free trial and then got so completely hooked on the quality of their shows that I've continued to subscribe long after the trial ended. Outrageous. How dare they be making such excellent, high quality television. I'm appalled.

Giri/Haji (Netflix). It turns out that the show that keeps appearing on 'hidden gems of streaming' is good actually. WHO KNEW? The excellent characters and performances really elevated this gang war crime drama.

Scavenger's Reign (Originally HBO, but I watched it on Netflix). This show was gorgeous and so creative. I'm so sad they're not getting a second season. I cried twice. It was short but it made an impact.

Special Film Category: Films that Actually Scared Me.

Since I mainly watch horror, I significant marker of quality for me is if I actually get scared watching a movie and two movies genuinely freaked me out this year: Oddity (2024) and Pyewacket (2017). For both, there were moments where I was like 'oh no I don't want to go to bed alone tonight'. Normally I love living alone. Regretted it only after these movies. The concept of the murder in Oddity was enough to freak me out but even outside of the inciting incident, it kept delivering with the deeply unsettling scenes. Pyewacket wasn't perfect, I think Adam MacDonald is the kind of filmmaker who builds a whole film based off one scene he has in his mind and the rest of film isn't quite as strong as that one scene. But that scene is so disturbing and I haven't stopped thinking about it. (Same with his Backcountry (2017), it was fairly weak except for this ONE scene that I'll never get out of my head.)

Also Dune Part II was pretty great, super glad I saw it on IMAX and I'm pretty sure it's like half the reason Hans Zimmer ended up on my Spotify top 5 this year. (Interstellar was the other half, SO glad I finally after a decade got to see it on IMAX!)

For books, I really enjoyed The Fishermen by John Langan. It's a great meditation on death, AND had a dark ocean, which you know I love.

Silver In the Wood by Emily Tesh's only crime was how short it was! I do still have to pick up the sequel, but I was definitely down for a full length novel of this.

This was the year I also discovered I CAN listen to audiobooks, which is part of why my count is higher than ever. I'm not done with this but I've been listening to Leviathan Wakes by James SA Corey and really liking it. I'm hoping to read the whole of that series in 2025.

Also, of course, while the quality of the individual books varied, my marathon of the Star Wars High Republic series was probably the most fun I've had with a series in years. Looking forward to the last couple books in 2025, though I'm sad to see it end.

worst of the year + notable DNFs under the cut so you don't have to scroll past my griping if you want to stay positive on this New Year's Dat. I'll reveal the list here in case I am saying mean things about your fave and you don't want to click the readmore: The Acolyte, Ronin by Emma Mieko Canton, City of Brass by SA Chakraborty, Aurora by David Koepp, Episode Thirteen by Craig DiLouie

The Acolyte (Disney+). Ok first off, I don't want to downplay that the experience of watching The Acolyte was one of my top of the year. Watching and theorizing week-to-week, live reaction posting, my High Republic book marathon leading up to it, those parts were SO fun. However. The longer I think about this show, the more I just cannot ignore how bad the structural issues are. This is even setting aside my personal issues with the show -- mainly the second-half pivot toward the enemies-to-lovers romance that really didn't land for me, and the treatment of Vernestra's character, and some of the things Headland said in interviews. The two full flashback episodes with no framing devices or any content in the present is just...bad television structure. I mean the first one just dumped on us was bad enough, but the second one where the episode before looked like it was setting up a framing for the flashback, only for the finale to be like 'never mind, that's not what was happening at all', was absurd. I dream of living in the branch of the multiverse where this is properly edited. Imagine how good it could have been, if the flashbacks were properly cut into the primary story, and we had more development of all the characters? Every time I watched something this year with extensive flashbacks (The Head, Dune: Prophecy, Black Doves, Giri/Haji) I thought 'alas, what if??' I think what happened though is Headland came up with the Rashomon comparison early and didn't change when the story would have been better served by not doing the conflicting perspective Rashomon thing, and using a more normal flashback structure.

There were good things! The fight choreography was truly excellent, episode 5 was a standout, and it didn't deserve the hate it got from toxic fans, but ultimately it had more downsides for me than up and I can't say I was particularly disappointed when it wasn't renewed. Though even that wasn't really deserved because it's FAR from the only Disney+ show to have really deep structural issues. Most of their series actually just aren't very good television. This isn't even the first time I had a great experience watching something and was engaged enough to write fic for it, only to in hindsight realize how flawed it was. (Loki came first, then Obi-Wan Kenobi, though the fic inspired by The Acolyte is shaping up to be the longest -- the others really only got short oneshots, I'm looking at a beast with this fic, 40k and counting!) And unless Disney+ makes some major changes in the TV production wing...I doubt it will be the last.

Ronin by Emma Mieko Canton (DNF). Technically, I would say this book isn't bad and why I labeled this section 'notable DNFs' as well. I think it's a good example of the way that concepts work really well in some formats, and don't translate well to others. I LOVE Visions, and I love "The Duel", specifically because the studios aren't bound by Star Wars canon. The open creativity of that series is a feature, not a bug. But I didn't find it translated well to the longer format of the book. I would follow the plot for a while and then get absolutely thrown by worldbuilding or backstory I couldn't follow. I think it needed more exposition. It was kind of odd that it was written like any other licensed book that didn't need exposition, but it was so different from standard canon it was hard to follow and I ended up giving up.

City of Brass by SA Chakraborty. I tried, babes, I tried. Everything said to make it to 50% and it would get better but I just could not do it. Nahri was so deeply annoying and I wasn't engaged enough in the rest of the plot to keep going. If she 'realized' one more thing I was going to lose my entire mind. I'm sorry.

Aurora by David Koepp. This is another where, like Ronin, it's not technically bad. I just ended up getting kind of pissed off by the end. It felt like it was trying to be Station Eleven but was too cynical. And maybe just now because my parents live in an area that gets a lot of power outages, I was kind of pissed that he reduced the accomplishment of getting the power grid working again to one line towards the end. I would have been way more interested to hear about that collective effort over the 'the suburbs make a utopian commune while all those scary urban people immediately descended into chaos' thing.

Episode Thirteen by Craig DiLouie. I feel so bad for saying this, but Craig DiLouie just wasn't intellectual enough to achieve what he was aiming for in this. Or at least he didn't put enough time or effort in to developing th? It couldn't counteract the truly stupid moments like the time when a character says he's going to shoot a ghost. But hey, it did lead to a reread of House of Leaves and further appreciation for one of my favorite underrated found footage films, As Above So Below. Because that was the crux of my problem with this book, that it wasn't well thought out enough to be House of Leaves and it didn't have enough heart to be As Above So Below.

I don't know why almost all of my least favorites this year were books, I guess I just have a lot of opinions on books. I also tend to DNF books less, so I end up having more negative thoughts about books, whereas with TV or film if I don't like it I just don't finish it or don't pay attention.

OKAY. THAT ASK MADE ME CURIOUS SO IM HERE AGAIN. do any of the kids like horror. like in general. the genre. if so What kinds of horror. formats, like horror novels, horror movies, horror manga, etc., but also subgenres, like psychological horror, splatter horror, slashers..... tl;dr which kid should i take 2 see saw in theaters and which kid would cry scream and throw up u know - annie

hatano: not a fan of horror :/ dont take her to watch saw.

higa: not really a fan of most horror content but likes horror books on occasion. perhaps a fan of classic horror stories? likes psychological horror specifically when the protags life gets ruined bc they cant tell whats real and whats fake. dont take him to watch saw he won't like it and you'll have to Deal with that

inori: isn't super into horror but isn't Averse to it. likes short form horror content, doesn't like stuff with Heavy metaphors/allegories, much more into horror for the sake of scaring u. kinda fucks w identity horror- specifically the identity of others. people being replaced, not being who they said they were, etc. can watch saw!

iranami: not a fan of horror, BUT tbh is into slashers + splatter. unrealistic gore kinda fascinates her. should be taken to watch saw but should be given a feel for what to expect. may not want to watch all the entries.

koba: likes horror as a Supplemental to other stuff, but his interests just kinda lie other places. i think he's a music listener before he's a movie watcher, and To Be Honest i think he's more into a p strict dichotomy of either reading fantasy, or non fiction. he likes horror w happy endings best. can watch saw, very engaged in jigsaw's assistants

kurokawa: into horror, but not into getting scared? it doesn't Usually spook her. if smthn manages to she's probably genuinely going to tear up a bit and Will go sit by her dad for a minute or twenty to calm down + comfort herself. anyways, likes most types of horror!! gets done the worst by jumpscares, she plays horror games on stream sometimes and has to vet them to make sure they arent jumpscare based. could try saw, but not in theaters. should watch it at home.

maeda: one of his siblings is a fan of junji ito and it Will pop up in rewrites. ito's stuff really sticks w him in a not so fun way. anyways, you can take him to see saw. he likes horror with Plot, he likes slashers for this sort of reason. would be a fan of the scream franchise, but in the way where he keeps going because he Wants it to be good, and he keeps feeling kinda let down by the mystery aspect of it. likes horror games too. does Not fuck with cosmic horror im being so genuine i think it'd be a really mean thing 2 do to suggest he read stuff w that. leave him alone :(

maki: not a fan of horror. can be exposed to saw traps but not the death scenes

mekaru: not a fan, do NOT take her to see saw please

ōtori: can be brought to watch saw. likes folklore type horror, analog horror Notably freaks him out. likes a good blend of plot and gore, fan of visual forms of horror.

taira: likes analog horror!!! and she likes cosmic horror too... really not too particular with genre or format its abt Quality. doesnt really like paranormal bc she feels it often isnt Good. can be taken to watch saw but certain traps will squick her out.

tomori: watches compilations of saw traps and gets Very uncomfortable. but still rewatches. doesnt really like horror? but i can see her liking creepypasta. got easily spooked as a kid but she accredits her "toughing up" to being cheer captain.

tsurugi: Can be taken to watch saw, doesn't really like movies though. might watch with you around halloween!!! not very picky with what he likes to look at, so horrors on the table for him. occasionally screws up his youtube feed to be all horror content and will get adhd trapped into watching anything that pops up, but will Not confess to this. his screentime is a private matter.

uehara: HELP HIM. not really a huge horror person but keeps getting exposed to horror medias. likes analog horror but it fucks with him so much. isn't a huge fan of horror movies because he tends to have a hard time sitting through them, the type to yell at the screen bc the characters are being dumb. prefers horror games for this reason. the help him at the start was a visceral reaction to the idea of making him watch saw. he's going to spook so badly he whacks his knees against the seat in front of them and bruises for a week and a half. DONT DO THAT TO HIM

yamaguchi: can go watch saw!!! i think he's Really fascinated by the implications of the series. likes the scenes/movies that involve outside forces trying to stop the traps, because he thinks its fun to see that sort of world building. anyways, i dont think he's a huge horror buff, but he will go see a horror movie if its popular. just isnt his preferred genre!!

But I am most of the time unserious and I love to joke around, serious situations are stressful so I prefer to be joyfull, but I do like talking about serious topics (sometimes) Like I said before I love to make people smile and laugh with my jokes and overall with make them happy with presence. Its my job to make others happy <3 My humor is definitely not for everyone, its mostly humor of a 12 y/o kid which can be annoying to some people lmao (sometimes its funny how people are annoyed by it) and some other things depends on how I feel. When it comes to annoyence I also like to annoy people <3 its so fun! But I never want to make them really feel bad! Often I act like an asshole but this is just for jokes! (but sometimes I wanna be a real asshole lmao) Like I said I dont want them to actually feel bad, if I do, I will feel very guilty! When it comes to it I apologize A LOT, I apologize so much that it might too annoying but I always feel a sense of guilt inside of me. I'm also VERY sensitve and worry about everything. Ah and I'm pretty dumb and I am not trying to insult myself I am just silly hehe and I'm okay with that. Oh and Im clumsy 😭😭

I LOVE LOVE horror and scary things, I can't imagine my life without it, its just a such interesting genre that makes me happy and intrigued! I adore horror games and I'm mostly interested in them, however most of the time I am scared of playing them so I just watch gameplays and stuff like that haha. You can say I am obssesed with horror! (its funny because its easy to scare me haha) I also love cute things! Plushies, pink, clothes and other cute things! I just love it so much <3 I like games very much (I suck at them), art, anime, drawing and psychology! When it comes to music I love energetic ones! I dislike slow music but there can be some exceptions.

I dislike cooking (I love when someone knows to cook however I suck at it </3), stressful and serious situations (I stress a lot)

When it comes to looks I am around 156cm height, chin length hair with bangs, brown color eyes and I'm chubby!
