Fanfic: Half a Mile High
Or, Shepard and Thane pass the time on their way to Liara's.
[Read on AO3] - Rated E for EXTREMELY FUCKIN SPICY
Pairing: Thane/FShep | Rating: 18+ | Words: ~4000
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
BEFORE WE BEGIN - Today is a little special, because exactly 10 years ago, I posted my first Mass Effect fanfic. If you want to get technical it was posted to FF.net first but that site is a crumbling ruin so I'm linking to AO3.
Even though I only wrote fic for about four of those ten years, I'm still sitting here like "what the fuck is my life." Never thought I'd be doing this still after so long. It's brought me a lot of happiness.
I'm still writing, and there's more to come for the foreseeable future c:
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
“You said you spent two years here. What brought you to Illium, anyway?” Shepard asked casually.
Thane looked up from the taxi kiosk as their vehicle pinged and its doors sprung open.
“Business,” he said simply.
Shepard frowned, rolling a shoulder as she settled into the driver's seat. They were running a little bit late, but Liara’s apartment wasn’t far. Automatic controls took over after just a few inputs, and they were off. She leaned back into the leather seat and looked over at Thane.
“You spent two years on Illium just… killing people…?”
“An assassin does not spend all of his days killing, as you say. Much of the work I did on Illium was not unlike what Ms. T’Soni was doing when you arrived here looking for me. Gathering intel on a target is arguably the most important thing an assassin does.”
“Makes your job easier in the long run,” she agreed.
“I don't strike until I understand exactly how to engage. Think of it like entering a pool of water. Jumping right in will cause splashing and disruption. But slip into the current of its mother stream and you will be but a drop of rain on an ocean.”
The corner of her mouth quirked at the natural poetry of his candor. “Who taught you to talk like that?”
Thane chuckled.
“Another thing I spent my time doing - reading.”
Their taxi rounded the side of a tall residential tower, clad in reflective azure-tinted glass. The setting sun lit the facade in oranges and purples, gleaming in shifting tones as they passed by.
“We are actually not far from where I lived,” he said, letting his hand fall over hers.
“A city man, huh? How does an assassin keep a low profile in a place like this?”
Thane hummed. “There is only one way. Trust.”
Shepard eyed him through a few errant locks of hair.
“Trust in yourself, or trust in others?”
“Both.”
“So you lived with other people?”
“Occasionally. But I tried to keep my travels within a few hours' distance. More often than not, I returned… home.”
She twined her fingers with his, but did not linger on the uncertainty in his voice. The concept of ‘home’ was a difficult one for all of them by now.
“My network of contacts is as important to my survival as my training,” he continued. “Trust is for the man who forged my false identity, for the person who owned my loft apartment. Trust is for the contractor who built the structure without a thirteenth floor.”
Shepard cocked a brow. “Humans think 13 is an unlucky number.”
“Indeed, the only way to reach it was through the security elevator. I placed my trust in the building’s attendants, as well.” He smirked. “It was not a hard thing to buy.”
They surged ahead as the sun dipped below the neon horizon.
Nos Astra looked like it had been ripped straight from the pages of the science-fantasy novellas she’d read as a child. The warmth of Illium's brutal sun slanted across her face and she let herself relax. How long had it been since she’d just enjoyed the passage of travel without the weight of responsibility tugging at her bones?
They sat in peaceful silence until greeted by the untimely downside of civilian transport. A line of red taillights stretched out before them.
Gridlock. Shepard groaned.
“I better let them know we’re running late,” she sighed as she punched up her omni-tool and fired off a message to Liara. Hopefully whatever Feron was cooking tonight didn’t require their punctual arrival.
"There are worse places to be stuck in traffic, Siha."
Their hands reconnected on the center console as she sank further into her seat. She understood why Joker made such a fuss about his pilot’s chair. This was far more comfortable than the hard plastic benches in the Normandy's shuttle.
“What was your favorite thing about living here?” She asked Thane with closed eyes, resting her head as their taxi crawled forward.
“Anonymity, I think. This planet is host to many species. Locals are accustomed to such visitors.”
“I thought drell were rarely seen off Kahje. No one ever bothered you about that?"
Thane sounded amused. “I became used to being approached offworld long ago."
"Must get annoying."
"Many are aware of the hanar reputation for training my kind as assassins. Most people keep their distance. But we do tend to attract the more…" he made a thoughtful sound, choosing his words carefully. "Let's say, 'adventurous types.'"
Shepard cracked a smile. "Boy howdy, I bet you have some stories."
Thane's lips twinged upwards. "There was a gentleman on Palaven who simply would not let up. He approached me about moving narcotics. When that failed to garner my attention, he attempted a more sensual dialogue."
"I didn't know turians had a thing for drell."
"The year is 2185, Siha. Anyone is fair game," he deadpanned. "But he was attractive by turian standards, if a bit boistrous. Tall and generously proportioned with a wide cowl and long fringe - studded, as well. I remember he was wearing a leather ensemble that flashed the hide at his waist, tattooed in black and red."
"Where were you on Palaven that had you engaging with guys like that?"
"My target was a drug pusher known for cutting his product with hanar toxins. It was not an idyllic location."
"Does compact training prepare you for turian tweakers trying to get in your pants?" She teased.
"Moreso to resist than to detect," he chuckled. "Perhaps in my youth, I would have…" Thane waved a hand, dismissive of words he hadn't even said.
Shepard had his full attention at that.
"Oh come on, you can't just leave me hanging on a story like that. Now you're telling me you have a thing for turians?" She tugged his arm, her tone jovial as she continued, "I better warn Garrus."
Thane took her hand and met her gaze. "I've had remarkably few partners in my life, Siha. I would rather not be burdened with the memory of unsatisfying trysts. But I do have eyes."
Her face split into a grin.
"I'll take that as a compliment, then."
He kissed the back of her hand, pulling her toward him.
"As well you should," he said as he gently tucked her hair behind her ear. "I have never regretted sharing my body with you."
Shepard leaned over to touch her lips to his. The gesture was meant to be appreciative, but he drew her into his arms. She didn't resist. There wasn't much else to do, stuck in traffic as they were.
"Must be nice to remember the best human sex you've ever had with perfect clarity."
"The only human sex I've ever had," he corrected. His lips brushed the shell of her ear as he pulled her into his lap. "But I don't think I need to tell you how reality supersedes memory."
That deep rumble in his voice made her nerves light up in ripples down her back and thighs. She sighed as he kissed along her jaw, his lips firm and gentle.
"If your memories feel like reality, what makes the real thing better?" An involuntary sigh escaped her throat when his mouth found her pulse.
Thane seemed to pause at her question, but as his fingertips slipped just below the hem of her shirt, she was not content to wait for his calculated response.
Her mouth covered his parted lips, tongue slipping out to taste him, exotic and warm. Fingertips tightened on the small of her back and slid upward, his large palms framing her waist. The warmth of his hands radiated through her, contentment scattered in the wind to be replaced with the low roar of oncoming desire.
Shepard pulled back to give him a knowing look, blinking against the venom-induced halos blooming around every point of light that flashed past their vehicle. Beneath her, she felt the stirrings of his arousal and she twisted her hips to align herself with the blessed pressure between his legs.
"Something you wanted to say?"
"That." He said simply.
She arched a brow. "What?"
"Spontaneity. Surprises. An impatient kiss while I consider your question." Her eyes followed his tongue as it ran along his bottom lip as though he could still taste her. "That is why, given the choice, I prefer 'the real thing.'"
Her face softened. "You wanted me to do that."
Thane was without a hint of shame.
"I had hoped."
His hands slid up her body, palms rounding her curves until he arrived beneath her breasts. Fingers grazed briefly over her bra, nipples peaking and evident beneath the fabric. That ghost of sensation zipped through her body like a spark on a wire, igniting every cluster of nerves on its way down to the heat building between her legs. From the pressure of their gently rolling hips, she felt the slick of her own arousal and blushed. She was already soaking wet for him.
"More importantly," Thane continued, "I wanted to see how 'high' you'd volunteer to be when we finally arrive at Liara's." Thane quickly yanked down the zipper on the front of her compression bra, releasing her breasts into the confines of her shirt and molding them in his palms. "From your response, I'd wager dangerously so."
Her whole body heated at his words. As the sun slipped below the horizon, she pretended not to notice how the windows were beginning to fog up, exacerbating her already hazy vision. She focused on his face. Dark eyes, plush lips, the muted iridescence of his scales throwing each passing light around in a blooming spectacle of color. His hardness pressed insistently against her center and she rolled herself against his lap, eyes drifting closed as she groaned.
"You're a fucking criminal, Thane Krios."
"Is that right?" There was a glimmer in his eyes, the corner of his mouth turning up into a sly smile. "Are you placing me under arrest, Spectre?"
He withdrew his hands from beneath her shirt and she whined at the loss of him. "Yeah, actually, I think I am."
He laughed, a sound she felt through her entire body. He removed her sweatshirt, unzipped and tossed it behind her before returning his mouth to her neck and shoulders.
"And what, may I ask, are the charges?"
"Possession of-"
She gasped when his hands fisted in her t-shirt, pulling it over her head and settling it behind her neck until all that remained was a stiff tangle of the shirt and bra around her shoulders. He pulled back to admire his work - the inviting expanse of her body, the rise and fall of her naked chest, nipples tightening with sensitivity as the air washed over her bare skin.
"God-" she only had a moment to breathe before he was mouthing his way over her heartbeat, cursing under her breath when he kissed between her breasts. "-on my authority as a Council Spectre, you're under arrest for possession of - oh - a deadly weapon."
Thane withdrew then, meeting her gaze as he peeled his tunic off and flipped it casually into the backseat. His answering tone was thick with mischief.
"I'm unarmed, Commander. I'd have thought this would be obvious."
Blinking to clear the bright spots in her eyes, Shepard summoned her composure and laced her fingers behind his neck, focusing on the delicious view of his long stripes diving beneath the waistband of his pants.
"The weapon, Sere Krios, is your mouth."
"I see," He murmured, caressing her breast before closing his lips around one peaked, sensitive nipple. Shepard arched against him, eyes fluttering closed, begging him for more under hushed breaths. He made no attempt to stop her from tugging him against her chest.
"In that case, I should warn you. These hands..." His teeth grazed her flesh and she gasped, "Are legally recognized as lethal weapons by the Illuminated Primacy."
To emphasize his point, he closed his fingertips around her other nipple, drawing a sharp gasp from her throat.
In whatever corner of her mind that still had clarity, she realized his statement was likely not a fabrication.
"I may have to confiscate those hands, Sere."
Thane gazed up at her with an intensity that threatened to set her on fire.
"You may try," he murmured into her skin.
Watching him tease her like this made her ache with need. Her back bowed, offering her breasts to his generous affections.
At that moment, their taxi lurched, diving to a lower altitude and coming to a near stop again as they joined a new queue of cars exiting their current lane of traffic (the cab's VI chirped a cheerful 'We remind you that seatbelts must be worn at all times'). The momentum carried her forward and then suddenly back again, and Shepard swore, falling in an awkward sprawl against the dashboard.
For a moment all she saw was the dazzling lines of traffic zipping past in Illium's night sky. Passing cars tracked slants of light across her exposed chest as they finally broke free of the exit queue and took off down another sky corridor. She thanked gods she didn't quite believe in for the cab's tinted windows.
Thane wasted no time taking advantage of her thighs, parted as they were over his lap. Nimble fingers unfastened her belt and yanked her pants to her knees. Dizzy, she contorted just enough to get one leg free, content to be half-dressed as long as he had access - as long as he would keep touching her.
Their lane was moving almost swiftly now. Drunk on light and lust, she could only hang on as Thane's palms slid up her muscled thighs. He teased the edges of her panties, never quite close enough to the ache of desire between her legs. She reached for his hands but he clasped her wrists and guided them to her chest, humming in satisfaction as she cupped her own breasts.
"A spectacular view," he murmured.
Shepard swallowed. She could nearly feel the heat of his gaze crawling up the bared expanse of her body, the scent of sex filling the tiny cab. Outside, the skyline was whipping by.
"Siha," he sighed as he used one gentle thumb to swirl her cotton panties over her drenched, aching cunt. "I have to wonder why you wear these at all."
She was about to tell him it'd be pretty fucking obvious if he would just get on with it when she heard a quick snap and they were gone, torn and forgotten on the floor. Those last thoughts fled her mind as both of his hands went to work, eager fingers rippling along her slit before sliding easily into her wet heat.
She bit back a moan, not wanting to give him the satisfaction
"You're a damn savage."
Thane smiled. "I did warn you about my hands."
The position was uncomfortable but she didn't care, not with his fingers doing absolutely unholy things inside her. He pushed deep, massaging her walls in slow, firm strokes as one scaled thumb rolled over her clit.
She clenched her teeth, fighting the alluring surrender of his venom. "We don't have... a lot of time here."
"Tell me what you want, Shepard."
She pushed herself against his fingers but he did not relent, fingering her at his leisure.
"God fucking damn it Thane, you know what I want."
That earned her a rare and authentic laugh, but he didn't let up.
His fingers curled against her walls. The gesture was as much for him as it was for her - a demand and a promise.
"Say it."
Her head fell back with a groan as he stroked the deepest, most sensitive part of her cunt.
"Holy shit, just fuck me."
"Very well," he said with his usual dry candor. "...since you are so eager."
Thane withdrew his hand, bringing it to his mouth as he kept her still with a palm on her belly. His tongue gathered the arousal that coated his fingers and she writhed, desperate to feel him on her, inside her, pounding the truth of his desire into her body until she couldn't speak or move.
Finally - he unbuckled his pants.
The vibrant color of his rigid cock was a blurred smudge in her venom-hazed eyes. He gripped under her thighs to haul her closer, teasing her clit with the tip of his length.
Shepard braced her palms on the dashboard and eased herself down on his prick. No human had ever filled her quite like Thane did. Her pulse pounded in her cunt, heat blooming between her legs as he opened her body to pleasures only he could provide. Heady waves of sensation rippled under her skin when he bottomed out. Her eyes rolled back. She panted hard atop him.
"I may never tire of teasing you like this, Siha." Thane smirked, rocking his hips gently.
"Shut it, Krios."
Hands settled on her thighs, squeezing as he smiled. "I'm afraid you'll have to earn my silence."
Shepard groaned, pushed herself off the dash and nearly collapsed over him, her mouth seeking his, buying his silence with her tongue. High as she already was, his kiss envenomed her further, transporting her far above the clouds of common decency and restraint. She rolled her hips in his lap, moaning into his mouth as his tongue slid against hers.
Fucking him was overwheming in the best way. Between his delicious tongue and his thick ridged cock filling her to completion, Shepard damn near forgot about their more civil plans for the evening. Lights flashed behind her closed eyes, their bodies moving together in his arms as the skycar's momentum carried them across Illium's neon sky. His kiss was so potent she was sure they'd left the atmosphere entirely. She was alive with need, slipping into a humming world of color and sensation. Fingers of heat crawled up her spine, overpowering her with nothing but raw desire. The need to stake herself on him, to ride him and claim him so completely that he would forever be a part of her.
And to that end, he guided her, fucking her with single-minded purpose. Scaled fingers squeezed her hips, sliding down over her backside to lift and pace her, stroking himself with her body. She cried out with every deep thrust, arms looped around his neck, gasping into the moonroof as he overtook her. His mouth slid over her breasts and worked her nipples one by one, forked tongue and plush lips, seeking, suckling, his tingling saliva leaving icy trails across her skin as he gave as much as he took, and then some.
He was incredible. At the mercy of his mouth and split open on his cock, she surrendered. Pleasure screamed through her veins as she climaxed, suffocated in skin and scent and sound. Shepard howled in his arms, fire pulsing between her legs and flooding every hollow corner of her body. An orgasm that stole her rhythm, made her sated with fatigue until all she could do was hold on, adrift on the ocean of his rolling hips and rasping breaths.
She felt him swell inside her. He gasped, his voice raw as his cock pulsed with the promise of oncoming release before he spilled himself in the deepest part of her cunt. He felt like heaven. Captive in his arms, she no longer gave a damn where they were or from whence they came.
How long they remained entangled this way, she didn't know. The sky had long since faded into the electric colors of Nos Astra's night. Reality came back into blurred focus as the skycar slowed to a stop in front of Liara's building. Shepard hid her face in Thane's shoulder. A light rain was falling, little rivulets clinging to the fogged windows like some kind of otherworldly ocean reaching from above.
There was no question - she'd overindulged.
Thane soothed her with warm hands, easing himself from her body. Neither of them were in any hurry to move, but as their vehicle began to beep in irritation, they began to untangle their heavy limbs.
She cleaned herself up - or tried to. Her eager lover pushed past her hands, slipping his fingers inside her freshly fucked cunt, massaging his cum into her walls.
“You’re incorrigible,” she whispered. His hands drew a soft sigh from her, threatening to reignite her lust as he gently coated her folds in his tingling release.
“We are already late, Siha. Shall I have the taxi take us around the city one more time?”
Shepard bit back a moan as his fingers slid over her clit.
“Don’t make me pull the Spectre card again.”
He grinned against her lips. “Very well.”
Thane retrieved her torn panties from the back seat. Shepard accepted them with a sheepish smile before tossing them in the vehicle’s waste receptacle.
Finally dressed, they stood in the vestibule of Liara's apartment. Shepard attempted to neaten her hair while Thane stood unmoving, hands clasped behind his back. No doubt he was prepared to deliver some kind of smooth excuse to explain away her blown pupils and buzzed behavior. Liara was too smart for that, but with any luck she'd be too polite to acknowledge her lack of inhibition.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Thane wasted no time engaging Liara about the many archaeological relics adorning her apartment. It was sobering to think that she’d been through not one, but two impossible missions with Liara by her side. She sounded like the woman Shepard remembered - bright eyed and fascinated by intricacies that would not have drawn anyone else’s attention.
Shepard sank into one of the too-soft couches and stared up at the vaulted ceiling, watching the elegant pendant lamps sway with the waning venom in her mind. There was a loft bedroom up and to the right. As she rubbed her thighs together absently in attempt to soothe her scale-bitten skin, she wondered - if walls could talk, what stories would they tell about her friend and her unlikely lover?
“Food’s almost done,” Feron shouted from the kitchen. “Water and tea okay?”
Liara took a seat. “Yes, thank you.”
Feron rounded the apartment moments later, handing out glasses of ice water and setting a tea tray out on the table. He stood and paused, his brow crinkling as he considered Thane’s proximity to Shepard’s uncharacteristic slouch.
"You guys fucked, didn't you?"
Liara choked on her drink.
"You mean in general?" Shepard began, "Or on the way to-"
Thane covered her hand with his own and cleared his throat.
"Shepard shared a drink with an old acquaintance before departing Nos Astra," he calmly explained.
Feron raised a brow, nictating membranes sliding in silence over his vivid amber eyes.
"You're a bad liar, Krios," he muttered. "You think I don’t recognize an envenomed human when I see one?"
"The drink she ordered is a cocktail made with drell venom."
Shepard turned Thane's hand over in hers, inspecting his scales like they were the most interesting thing in the room.
"I like your freckles," she whispered - loudly.
Feron rolled his eyes. "Gods, you let her drink that?"
"To say I let her do it would imply that I have any say at all in what Shepard chooses to do."
Feron's eyes narrowed.
“Ha se’vah donn’um raav tor. (She’s had more than just a drink.)”
Thane sat quietly a moment, a smile reaching slowly across his features as he responded in a low, confident tone.
"Ha se’vah donn'um fara. (She’s had much more)."
Shepard was about to ask what he said when Liara abruptly cleared her throat and excused herself. Feron barked out a laugh as she passed.
“Ravash sered. (Dirty old man.)”
"One day you may learn that your sharp tongue is better suited to pleasing your lover, serét (young man).”
Feron extracted an ice cube from his glass and flicked it across the room at him. Thane dodged it neatly and smiled devilishly.
Shepard squeezed Thane’s arm. “What are you guys even talking about?”
“Our host wishes to be assured of your good health, Siha.”
Shepard grinned.
“Never been better.”

Kaidan for character ask
oooops! So I totally forgot I had this in my inbox. I apologize for the extremely late response.
Thank you for sending in a character ask, nony.
favorite thing about them
There is a lot I love about this man. First, he has his shit together. Even though he has his childhood traumas, he's dealt with it in a super healthy way. I think there's more to his past that he lets on, but he doesn't let them define him. There's just certain things he mentions in ME3 that makes me believe he might have witness some deaths at BAat. There seems to be a lot of "in between the lines" statements about him that makes him a very interesting character. I don't thin he's boring as many claims him to be.
He speaks his mind., like he did to Shepard back on Horizon. He knows what are is morals and he follows them. It doesn't make him weak, it makes him an honorable man.
And well, I adore how sweet he is.
least favorite thing about them
There's nothing I hate about him. What is there to hate about him?
favorite line
He says something on Thessia that hits me, I usually bring Javik with me so I never heard it before until Leah brought him on Thessia this run: "there's a lot of moments in my life that I wish I could forget. The first life I saw taken, the first life I had to take, and now this."
Ties back with what I think about BAat.
brOTP
Cortez, Garrus, James, Wrex (I really like the elevator talks about "So who do you think would when in a fight between you and Sheaprd" and Kaidan is all like "I would never go against Shepard s/he's my commander officer" in ME1
and in ME3 when Wrex is all "Remember when I asked you who would win in fight between you and Shepard" and Kaidan really hoped Wrex forgot about that.
"Hahah! Guess we're about to find out" I just think it's done really well.
OTP
Other than Shepard? Let's see:
Kaidan/Miranda
Kaidan/Cortez
Kaidan/Jack
Kaidan/James (and with Shep if we go with an OT3)
Kaidan/Thane
nOTP
The only ones i'm not really crazy about is Kaidan/Garrus but I think mostly because fandom has pinned them against each a lot of the player romances both in a playthrough.
random headcanon
Kaidan likes to wear plaid shirts on the Orchard. Like honestly, I picture him like Logan ( in Wolverine movie) as a lumberjack and you've got orchard Kaidan.
I believe he's very much a nature guy who would love to take you hiking as a first date.
I also think he's a jack-of-all-trades.
unpopular opinion
He's not boring.
song i associate with them
I don't really have a song I associate him with.
favorite picture of them
How dare you make me choose!
https://www.deviantart.com/lordhayabusa357/art/Kaidan-Alenko-815419040
Tumblr media
Ps. This ask randomly showed up in my drafts when it had completely disappeared months ago.
I don't know what happened. But nonny, I sincerely apologize for the long wait.

OC/Shepard as a companion
So ages ago the lovely @alyssalenko tagged me to do this, thank you, and sorry it took so super long! Originally this is a meme for your Shepard, but since I wanted to add a new OC to my Jules Shepard's story, I did it for her. Hope you don't mind!
Tagging @liaorban @starsandskies @playstationmademe and @galacticnug but no pressure of course, and feel free to do this for your Shep and not for an OC!
Picrew is here!
Tumblr media
THE BASICS:
Full name: Tori Robin Royle
Class: Engineer
Pre-service history: Enlisted to basic Alliance training when she was 18 in 2175. After she had finished school, she traveled around for a while, performing at different places, planning to start her career as a singer. All in her family are active Alliance soldiers though so Tori felt the pressure to enlist as well.
Psychological profile: Unlike the rest of her family, Tori wasn’t meant to be a soldier. During her basic training, where she also met Commander Shepard and became their protegé, it became clear quickly that she wouldn’t be able to fight at the front line. The Alliance encourages her to improve her tech skills though, and with hard work (and help from Shepard) Tori becomes an Engineer. While she’s not a powerful fighter, Tori can quickly oversee the battlefield in combat and debuff enemies with her tech skills, actually becoming one of the most valued Engineers in her unit. Still, Tori never really felt at home in the military and didn’t stop dreaming of a career as a musician. While Shepard oversees other young soldiers as well, they developed a special connection with Tori, reassuring her to go her own way, even if that meant leaving the Alliance. To her own surprise, Tori gets assigned to a unit that hunts down batarian pirates in 2179. During an attack she gets heavily wounded though and loses her right arm. After she spent months on her recovery, she finally decides to leave the Alliance. Not much is known about her life after that - but she did become rather well known on the Citadel, finally working as the musician she always wanted to be. The Alliance loosely keeps track of her as she’s still in contact with Commander Shepard.
Rest is under the cut :)
MASS EFFECT 1:
When/how are they recruited: She won’t be recruited in ME1. She’s 26 at this time (2183), and left the Alliance in 2180 after she couldn’t get over her accident in 2179. Tori used to play the guitar in a band, but in 2182 she started her solo-career. She’s not really a celebrity but has made a name for herself as a singer, mostly performing at bars. Shepard can meet her at the Flux where she performs on Wednesday nights with her “Oldies” show - heavily influenced by 1950s Earth music.
Where are they on the Normandy: At the Citadel. She can be found at the Flux when she performs or at the Presidium
Are they romanceable: No
Personal quest: If Shepard visits her at the Flux they can talk about their common past. Tori will ask Shepard to check on her parents who she hasn’t heard from in a few months - which is not uncommon, as they aren’t close, but she started to worry. Shepard can then check the last known coordinates for the spaceship Tori’s parents worked on and find out that there was a major technical problem. The crew was trapped on the Carrier with no means to land and no way of contacting anyone. If Shepard does the mission and saves the ship, including Tori’s parents, it will contribute to Tori and her parents getting closer plus you get to see Tori perform. If Shepard doesn’t visit Tori or doesn’t do her quest, a Turian ship will save the Carrier and Shepard will hear about it in an elevator on the Citadel.
Who are their friends: Shepard is her friend, and she would get on especially well with Liara, Joker and Kaidan.
MASS EFFECT 2:
What does their dossier say: Tori Robin Royle, or Robin Royle aka RR when she performs, is a seemingly harmless, popular singer on the Citadel. But, behind the mask of a performer, she’s a retired but very capable Engineer. She has ties to Commander Shepard, could be easily influenced to help the mission, and, as a friend, might improve Shepard’s mood and thoughts about working with Cerberus, if she is recruited.
When/how are they recruited: She can be recruited in Act 2 after Shepard went to Horizon. If Shepard was in a romantic relationship with Ashley or Kaidan, Tori will send a message to Shepard, telling them she heard what happened and is there to talk whenever they want. The Illusive Man will encourage Shepard to visit Tori on the Citadel and ask her to join as she could be a valuable asset - hinting heavily that he has the means to end Tori’s career if Shepard doesn’t ask her.
Where are they on the Normandy: Either in the Mess Hall on Deck 3 or in the Starboard Observation.
Are they romanceable: No. If Shepard doesn’t romance Thane she’ll be in a relationship with him though.
How do they react to the PC returning: She will be incredibly surprised, but happy - after all, they had been friends and Tori had grieved for them. She’d be unsure about their connection to Cerberus though, and worried that Cerberus rebuilding them might have changed them. Tori would ask Shepard some personal questions, but would stop quickly as she’d feel like she’s invading their privacy. Only later on, on the Normandy, they would talk again about how Shepard feels about working with Cerberus, their cybernetics, and their personal history.
Personal quest: Tori approaches Shepard after she gets a call from her parents. If Shepard did Tori’s assignment in ME1, she will tell them that she got a bit closer with her parents, even though they don’t see each other often. If Shepard didn’t do her quest she’ll say that her parents wouldn’t contact her if it’s not important. Tori’s brother Andrew, a rather high-ranking Alliance officer, has gone missing and the Alliance wasn’t able to investigate or didn’t share any information. Shepard and Tori will meet with the Shadow Broker, aka Liara, to get information on Tori’s brother. They will discover that the Alliance did investigate but couldn’t find out what happened to Andrew either, and that his last coordinates are somewhere on a planet in the Horse Head Nebula. After following the coordinates and finding some clues they discover that Andrew had formed a small unit to hunt down a gang of Turian pirates. The pirates got the better of them though and Andrew and his unit died - their bodies can be found inside a factory, seemingly killed in action. Tori will be devastated, even though she wasn’t close with her brother. Shepard can assure her they will hunt down the pirates (which would lead to another side quest) and that they’ll do her best so the Alliance honours his death - this will cheer Tori up a little, but it’s not necessary to gain her loyalty.
Do they fight with any other companions: She has companions she’s not very close with due to them being rather different - like Miranda, Jack or Zaeed. However she rather keeps her distance than to engage in any fights.
What files does the Shadow Broker have on them: Her personal history, information on her family and video material of some of her performances. A list of songs she wants to cover, an extensive shopping list and the history of her watched videos. If Shepard hasn’t romanced Thane, then he and Tori get close - there will also be some files of songs she wrote for him (and changed frequently) and some emails they exchanged.
Can they die in the suicide mission, and how: She can die if she’s left behind as a defender as her combat skills aren’t the best.
MASS EFFECT 3:
When/how are they recruited: After the suicide mission she takes some time off. First, she visits her family and grieves for her brother. Then she goes back to the Citadel, planning to continue working as a singer. If she’s with Thane she spends less time performing and puts all her energy into helping him find a cure. She can then be convinced to come back to the Normandy after Thane dies (or for those like me who refuse to accept that Thane dies: They both come back after the Coup). If she’s not with Thane she will still join the Normandy Crew after the Coup.
Where are they on the Normandy: Mostly in the Starboard Observatory or the Mess Hall, just like in ME2.
Are they romanceable: No. If Shepard didn’t romance Thane she’s with him.
Citadel meetup (during the game, where do you meet them on the Citadel and what do you talk about): She can be found on the Silversun Strip, happy to get the chance to perform again. Other times she’s seen with the refugees, talking to them or playing the guitar for some children. If she’s with Thane, both can also be found at the Presidium. She and Shepard would talk about their past, how things have changed, and their hobbies. If she’s with Thane Shepard can also talk about his sickness (and recovery) and how they spend their time together.
How does the PC relax with them in the Citadel DLC (ie, buying gifts with EDI, watching the game with James and Vega, etc.): Tori would invite Shepard to watch one of her performances. She’d also suggest some firearms training as she feels like she needs it. Alternatively they would go to a bar or a restaurant to talk, or go shopping for supplies (and maybe more fish).
What do they say to the PC before the final battle: “I can’t believe this is it.. I’m scared Shepard, but I’ll do my best to assist you. And please, know that whatever happens - you’ve been a true friend to me, always helpful, always supporting. I’m thankful I met you all those years ago. Now let’s go. We’ll get out of this. We’ll see each other again, I know it.“

N7 Month day 27 - Trauma
You can also read this on AO3. . . . . . . Cronos Station, the Illusive Man's home base, was gone.  Allie and her team took care of things from within – killing Cerberus troops, downloading data, sabotaging systems.  The Alliance took care of things from the outside – killing their fighters and damaging the station beyond repair.  They finally had the information about the catalyst and Allie was able to get vengeance for Thane when she drove her omniblade through Kai Leng's chest.  Her team returned to the Normandy with only the usual bumps and bruises, but all Allie could think about were the video logs they found. For the past year or so, Allie really never wrapped her head around the fact she had actually been dead. When she woke up in that Cerberus lab, she thought maybe she just blacked out from a lack of oxygen.  Even when Jacob said she was nothing but 'meat and tubes', she thought he was exaggerating. Miranda downplayed the whole thing, only ever just verifying that Allie was clinically dead when she started her work.  It wasn't until after she beat the Collectors and turned herself in to the Alliance that she was able to just let it go.  She was alive now and what happened before didn't matter. While EDI was hacking through a door on the station, she mentioned a terminal bank that hadn't been scrubbed and contained information about the Lazarus Project.  At first, Allie wasn't sure she wanted to see it – she was expecting spreadsheets and cost analysis and maybe some medical information, boring crap she didn't want to waste her time reading – but ultimately decided she'd regret it in case it turned out to be something else. 'Something else' turned out to be the understatement of the century.  The terminals didn't have spreadsheets or accounting data or test results.  Oh, no...  in hindsight, that might have been preferable.  Instead, the first entry Allie saw was a video of some doctor talking to the Illusive Man and about how bringing her back was impossible. ...Sir, Shepard is clinically brain-dead.  After that much trauma, that long with no oxygen... We cannot overcome nature... It took a few moments after the video ended for the words to actually sink in.  “Meat and tubes,” Jacob had said.  Apparently, he wasn't exaggerating.  She hadn't just blacked out and been in some kind of coma.  She was really, literally dead in every sense of the word. Now Allie sat in the sub-deck, sitting on the cot Jack had called 'home' during her stay on the SR-2, a bottle of something alcoholic firmly in her grasp as she tried once again to wrap her head around the information she found on Cronos Station. ”I thought you were just on life-support,” Kaidan said.  “Clinically brain-dead...”  Allie could almost feel everything click into place for him.  Their confrontation on Horizon was thrust into a new light – of course he was so angry back then.  He thought she was just in a coma, though, to be fair, so did she. “What was it like?” he asked.  “I mean, if you remember... or... how do you feel?” “I'm still me,” Allie spat.  “I doubt I'd have been able to turn against Cerberus otherwise.”  She stared at the blank screen for several moments before continuing.  “I don't remember anything.  Maybe they really fixed me, or maybe I'm just a high-tech VI that thinks it's Commander Shepard.  I don't know.  I...” “You're real enough for me,” Kaidan said, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “Real enough,” Allie muttered, taking a long pull from the bottle in her hand.  She winced as the liquid burned her throat and sighed when alcohol-induced warmth raced across her midsection.  “What the fuck does that even mean now?” “Commander, your heart and breathing rates are elevated,” EDI noted.  “It appears you are distressed.” Allie let out a sardonic chuckle and glanced at the ceiling.  “You think?” she snapped. “I believe I am partially to blame for your current state,” the AI apologized.  “Perhaps I should not have advised you to watch the information about the Lazarus Project.” “Hindsight is always 20/20, EDI,” Allie sighed and dragged her hand down her face.
“True,” EDI replied after a moment's consideration, “but I should have taken any negative reaction into account when informing you of the contents of that databank.  Given your previous doubts about your condition when Cerberus obtained your body, I believed it best for you to see for yourself what it was like in the early stages of the project.” “You meant well,” Allie said. “Even if you had taken a potential negative reaction into account, there's still that level of unpredictability with humans that you'll probably never be able to account for.  If I remember correctly, you said that it was that unpredictability that made both you and Joker working together such a formidable team.” “I had not considered that,” EDI admitted.  “Still, it troubles me that you are in distress and my actions are the cause.  I will strive to do better in the future.” “EDI, you're fine,” Allie said, taking another drink from the bottle.  “Sometimes people need a smack upside the head.  The person doing the smacking might feel guilty, but in the long run, it might be for the best.” “I see.  In this analogy, I am the person doing the smacking, correct?” “Yes, EDI, you are,” Allie chuckled.  “I don't suppose you retrieved those files, did you?” “I did,” EDI admitted.  “I believed they might someday prove to be invaluable, but considering your reaction, I was considering deleting them.  If you wish, I will remove all traces of them from all sources.” “All sources?” Allie frowned.  “I'm guessing there's a copy buried in my omnitool somewhere, right?  And you've got a copy saved somewhere.  Who else has them?” “Major Alenko is the only other person aware of their existence and has viewed them seven times since we returned from the station.  His stress levels are nearly identical to yours,” EDI said.  “I was going to check on him next.” Allie's frown deepened and she wondered if he was feeling guilty for how he'd treated her regarding her association with the now-defunct human rights group.  Maybe she should pay him a visit, share some small talk or something.  “No, EDI, I'll do it.  And don't delete those files, either.  Restrict the access, though.  No one except for the major and myself is to view them, understood?” “Yes, Commander.  Shall I tell the major you are on your way?” EDI asked. “No,” Allie said, standing and stretching her arms over her head.  “I'll probably need a few minutes to get my brain in gear, and brew some coffee.” “Of course.  EDI out.” Allie stared at the bottle in her hand, wondering if maybe checking on Kaidan was a mistake.  They talked about Horizon, but not really about the way he treated her on Mars or during the coup.  Their friendship was barely that and she was certain he thought she hated him or at the very least didn't like him much.  They were on their way to earth for one final push against the Reapers and if the worst came to pass, she didn't want him to continue thinking that was true.  They might not be able to be lovers again, but maybe they could at least end the war as friends.  Real friends.

For Work In Progress Wednesday:
I am fooling around with a framing device for a few ME2-pre ME3 sketch fics I’ve been piling up but it’s still rough.  Wouldn’t mind a little feedback from the peanut gallery.
Case Files
Not immediately.
Major Alenko absolutely does not run to the SPECTRE office with his new authorizations to view files he honestly has no business seeing.
The second Human SPECTRE nods and smiles and shakes hands during the small party the Council insists upon.  He does an interview with a shockingly meek Al-Jilani. He has a cup of tea with the drell, Tannor Nuara, though he’s pretty sure that’s not his name and checks in with Dr. Michel to remind her to keep him updated on the hospital’s needs. It’s no problem, he assures her. He used up enough of the resources, himself.
Kaidan goes to his quarters and changes into his fatigues and opens a beer he probably shouldn’t. He sends another message to his mother and makes a few replies to friends.  He starts in on the endless pile of paperwork.  He considers dinner, a shower, hitting the training facility. He drinks his beer.
An hour after that, he’s in the elevator, in the hallway, avoiding an ambassador’s aide.
It’s probably a violation of privacy.  It’s absolutely taking advantage of privileged information.  But he needs a few answers, if he’s ever going to sleep at night without wondering if he did the right thing.
Her file is...staggeringly long.  He scans a few others, for comparison.  His is almost nothing but his BaAt file, his service record, and the three debrief interviews he did after Alchera. After Horizon. After Earth and Mars. Others are thicker and thinner.  Saren’s is heavily redacted even with Kaidan’s authorizations and the affirmation of the Reapers and ends with “Status: Revoked. Terminated.”
Shepard’s starts with a few files from an orphanage that he just glances through, most of which are nothing but “Fostered: Date. Returned: not much later.” There’s one black and white holoscan of a little girl with tight braids, freckles, big eyes and a gap tooth grin.  It’s labeled: Eden Magdalene Shepard
No other record found matching available data. Possible id not confirmed.
But it’s her.  He can see the woman in those clear, direct eyes.
There’s a stack of arrests for an Ace Shepard
Possible alias. Matches available data. Records sealed for age
And one mugshot.  Definitely Aedan Shepard, the scar under her eye still fresh and stark. Red hair, though unnaturally crayon bright, half shaved and shaggy on the other.  Those eyes lined in red, staring at the camera like murder from a pale, bone thin face. Black lipstick smeared across her sneer. One arm long and dangling, the other in a cast, strapped to her side.  A sketchy green tattoo on her neck in the side view of a knife, a slash of purple make up stark across a nose too big for her pixie face. No age listed but she can’t be 14 by the date.
An Academy admissions form for Aedan Shepard with an accompanying note from one Commander Anderson that he skims to land on a final line. “I know she isn’t what you usually look for. She’s going to need some remedial work. Trust me on this one, Mira.”
Her Academy file shows grades gradually improving to higher marks. Her physical improves faster, doctor notes indicating that between regular meals and gene mods she’s going to make the height/weight requirement by the end of her first year. Her marksmanship punts her into the stratosphere.
Another picture in familiar Academy togs. There’s his...there’s the Shepard he knew. No visible tats, Dark red hair, short but neat. Seven freckles across her leonine nose not quite hidden by regulation makeup.  The scar is faded, but still raised. Eyes level and cool, mouth firm.  Baby professional.
He knows her service record almost as well as his own.
There’s the one holonet picture from Elysium, Aedan in her black bikini and flip flops, dogtags flying, pistol steady, directing someone (a teenage girl, she told him later) to fill a hole in the defense. There’s the picture from a little later, chin high and firm in her dress uniform: an admiral pinning the Star of Terra to her chest.  He can see Anderson leaning over to Hackett in the background.
There’s a cross reference to her N file.
Commendation after commendation. One flag for disrespect to a superior officer.
SPECTRE CANDIDATE
There’s the file on the Normandy SR1, the holo of her SPECTRE induction, and the Saren mission.
Her Alliance report on the mission, the letter to Ashley’s mother. A few interview files.
A debrief they’d called her to Arcturus to give.  She’d shrugged it off as routine and they’d run to the Citadel for shore leave.
There’s the official Alchera report cross referenced with his. Joker’s. Chakwas’.
He slows down. There’s a termination flag that wasn’t removed.
Attached to that is an addendum from another SPECTRE, Tela Vasir, cross referenced with the Shadow Broker file three weeks after the Collector attack on the SR1.
Situation to be reviewed. Shepard and/or remains possibly recovered. Check all Cerberus contacts.
The next data is a bioscan from the security checkpoint on Zakera, two years and a few weeks after Shepard had been declared dead. An alert notice. Three grainy stills from the security chief’s office. Not quite clear enough to make out details beyond hair and height. And two figures in Cerberus gear behind her.
He’d just left the Citadel posting for Horizon the week before.
The next file is video only, fuzzy. Clearly from a planted device. Kaidan rubs his eyes before he hits play on grainy footage with biometric data rolling on the outside edge.
A red haired, slender, short figure in black and red N7 armor strides into Anderson’s Citadel office.  She walks like Aedan, that rolling ship gait.  She draws up short in front of his desk.  He speaks, she answers, he speaks again.  And he watches her whole body jerk as if she’s been shot.
All formality lost, her hands spread.  She’s yelling and Anderson isn’t meeting her eyes as he replies.  That square posture droops and hers matches.
She slaps a data drive on his desk, turns on her heel and marches to the door.  The bug must be by the doorframe, Kaidan can see details now.  She turns her head and there they are, the scars that shocked him, glowing along her jawline pulled open and raw by the awkward position. They look like they hurt. He almost misses the word she asks over her shoulder. “Kaidan?”
Anderson shakes his head and Kaidan can lip read well enough to get, “Classified.”
Her hand clenches on the doorframe. “Two years, Boss?”
“Yeah, kid.”
She jerks a nod, says something else as she turns to go. Her shoulders square before she walks through the sliding door. He catches a glimpse of white and black on a figure just outside. Anderson leans against his desk, head down.
A holo of a Normandy; the SR2. Flying Cerberus colors in the Citadel docking bay.
Biometrics confirmed. SPECTRE Status: Reinstated.
Kaidan closes the file and staggers back to the elevator.
00000
It’s a week of small potato missions before he can trust himself to reopen the file.
Every two weeks, there’s a data dump to Anderson/Hackett, copied and crossreferenced to SPECTRE files. About half include encrypted data that still hasn’t been decoded The Alliance version carries a note dating from nine months ago: Speculation: Code specific to Anderson/Shepard.
The dumps usually come from Illium, shunted through a source with an address he recognizes.  Liara.
There’s a pile of data from Omega and then a list of files for her crew: Miranda Lawson. Jacob Taylor. Kasumi Goto (notations from Spectre Jondam Bau). Garrus. Mordin Solus. Zaeed Misoni. Urdnot Grunt. Justicar Samara. Jack. Tali. Thane Krios. He recognizes Tannor Nuara and shuts the file down.
Over a cup of tea in the bustle of Huerta’s lobby, Thane blinks but then smiles.  “You were more observant than I expected, Spectre Alenko.”
“It wasn’t my business.”
“No.  But I promised her I would look out for you and I clearly revealed more than I intended.”
“You promised Shepard?”
He nods.  “You were still bedridden at the time. It seemed a reasonable precaution.”
Well, thanks, I guess.
“It was my privilege. She helped me save my son, once.  I was glad to return the favor with her...friend.”
“Can you.  Look, I don’t want to put you in a corner.  I’m just trying to reconcile the Shepard I knew with what happened last year.  Can you tell me...anything?”
“When I met her on Illium, I used her to distract a target.”
A target?  You were there to kill someone?
You said you read my file?
You were an assassin.
Yes.
You used Shepard?
She was...a very good distraction.  My target assumed Shepard was the assassin, tearing through her guard and the tower like fire through dry tinder.  It allowed me to quietly get into position. Shepard got her information and I made my hit.
And Shepard hired you?  It wasn’t that far out of character.  Wrex came to mind.
We came to an agreement.  I was not expecting to be able to work much longer and the Cerberus contract allowed me to set aside money for my son.
Right.  How was it?  On the ship.
Antagonistic.  At first.  There was a line drawn between the Cerberus crew and Shepard.  It was crossed very rarely.  She was.  Not warm.
Unfriendly?
Angry.  She drank more than I expect was good for her.  She spoke rarely, to Garrus most of all.  She put her armor on in the morning and we rarely saw her in anything else.
What changed?
We aided Tali, the quarian?  Kaidan managed not to snap that he knew her.
Yes.  We found her and Shepard made a visible effort to change, Kasumi asked a favor and they dealt with it. She came back...you’ve seen the scarring?
Yeah.
They were almost closed.  They’d been healing, reopening, healing.
Garrus needed her help and while we were on the Citadel, she aided me with my son.  He was...about to follow in my footsteps but without my training it was...she saved him.  She helped me stop him.  When she came back to the ship, she went up to speak with Joker and I heard her laughing.  I had not. Before.
The drell went stiff before him, his dark eyes revealing stark pupils.  “Eyes like ice frozen on the shore, she stands between Kolyat and the ambassador.  She speaks with steady conviction and he listens.  Eyes like the storms on a sea, she shadow steps between the turian and the bullet waiting for him. “He’s as good as dead, can’t you see that.” Garrus drops his rifle.  Eyes like smoke, she laughs like rusty bells on a chain.  Joker tells her he’s missed her.”
His eyes darken to see Kaidan before him, scanning him with an omnitool about to wave over a doctor.  “Forgive me.  Drell have...our memories are revealing.  It seemed the best way to answer your question.”
“What just happened? No...nevermind.  It got better then?”
“Yes.  Until then...She was always a sniper, I assume? “
“Yeah, before I met her”.
“There is a...one has to put oneself in a certain state and a healthy being can slip in and out.  She did not.  Before that.  She was just in the cold, stark place one must be in to pull the trigger.  And then, the wind changed.  It was Garrus and Tali, who made the most difference.  Kasumi mentioned once that Shepard barely spoke before he came aboard, other than mission briefs.  After.  She would visit.  It was…”  Thane broke off in a coughing fit. “Forgive me, I need to…”
“No, I kept you too long. I”m sorry.”
Thane stood, his hand not quite clutching the chair for support. “I will...try to write down some things for you.  If you’d like.”
“Only if you’re up to it.  I got...I got the gist.  Thank you.”
