I see that you're anti Bakugou blog, can I ask something because I'm really curious? Don't worry it's not hate ask (even if I'm Bakudeku shipper).
What I want to ask is the same in this post :
"I get preferring other ships, but if you hate them (BKDK), cannot stand them... you don't love the story. How could you? The narrative is built around their relationship. How they feel about each other at any given time is how you can tell the story is progressing. In both cases, they want to compete and surpass each other, which motivates them to train harder, to be better.
This is also why I don't get people who say they love one character but hate the other. Like, you cannot love Midoriya while hating Bakugou and vice versa.
They don't need to be your favorite characters, but you have to recognize their importance to your fav and their character arc. That is simply logical, in my opinion."
Thoughts, please?
First of all thank you for the question and not sending any hate comments that's very appreciated by me!
This is an interesting perspective and interpretation of the series, even if I don't see eye to eye with you or agree with this interpretation thank you for sharing it.
To begin this of I want to say that I don't particularly agree with the statement that you provided above. While the story in itself does revolve around izuku and bakugo to an extent its not exactly that big and I would argue that it shouldn't be that big of an involvement overall.
Izuku and bakugo's rivalry or the extended version which is the Canon one harms both the characters and the plot. This is because of how their rivalry naturally is which is toxic. @sapphic-agent goes into depth about how the wonder duo fails and of the toxicity of their supposed rivalry.
From the beginning izuku and bakugo's relationship was unhealthy whether that be from izukus non stop admiration even when bakugo abused him or bakugo who thought that izuku was a nuisance in his path. I think the best route for bakugos character was for him to ditch the rivalry route towards anyone. Bakugo as a character needed to accept that there are various people who will be weaker or stronger or different than him. He also needed to accept that society proping him up as this next big hero and ultimately feeding his ego was also wrong.
In the end I still have a lot of issues with bakugo's character individually that I did talk about previously and I think that overall he should of had an arc of breaking down his harmful thoughts, beliefs and behaviours. His arc needed more focus on his character and how he treats other people not just izuku.
I also want to argue that bakugo's arc isn't that well written at all. He doesn't really change and the change we do see from his underwhelming due to a number of reasons whether that be his horrible apology or his behaviour not really changing and being played off as a gag or the way we see bakugo still uphold his old behaviour heck it's all around his arc him being the only character to follow the idea of not saving someone or him just being hyperfixated on a rivalry that doesn't have equal footing.
I think the bakugo vs izuku fight part 2 showed a lot of bakugo and izukus problems within their relationship really well. I also think that was the arc where bakugo should of been separated from izuku having people acknowledge the toxicity of their relationship as bakugo thinks izuiu owes him an explanation when he doesn't or how izuku is supposed to overcome his admiration for bakugo and realise that what bakugo did to him was wrong. @delawaredetroit made a lot of analysis based on that fight which I think is worth checking out because they point out good bakugo critiques that horikoshi doesn't address and simply let's slide for bakugo while painting his and izukus relationship as perfectly fine and a healthy rivalry that moves the story.
In the end for bakugo he becomes a character attached to izuku ultimately having no real relevance outside of izuku and that sucks for him as he isn't even able to grow an we aren't able to see that change with the way he Interacts with the world.

Now moving onto izuku's character. Izuku due to horikoshis writing decisions also suffered a lot due this supposes rivalry. Izuku doesn't ever acknowledge the abuse that bakugo committed ultimately since he doesn't ever get to either introspect or freely express emotions about this issue his whole character starts to lack introspection and hinders him from forming valuable character relationships that can help push the narrative forward as he comes to understand heroes, civillians and villains alike. Izuku also never gets a say in the relationship he ultimately becomes more passive and a shell of his former self as the series goes on to the point that we don't see him react to losing his quirk (no the moment is focused on bakugo crying instead) and we don't see izukus response to the apology that bakugo offered.
It seems that throughout their relationship izuku who once had potential and so much going for him went through one of the worst cases of character regressions and assassinations that I have ever seen . At least before the rivalry started we saw izuku express fear, awe, anger and so many more emotions towards bakugo but now he is an empty shell a clean slate that cannot feel any negative emotions towards him at all.

Going back to my original point the narrative isn't fully built around their relationship and while they do have major themes such as win to save and save to win, their relationship in itself doesn't bring much to the narrative it actually just harms their characters and makes them lack depth even more.
Izuku already has a character who is supposed to be his rival, whose supposed to challenge his views, whose supposed to understand him and be understood by him and that character is shigaraki yet horikoshi doesn't build up on their relationship and only throws parallels around when it comes to those two making the final war arc a dissatisfactionary and disappointing rollercoster filled with mountains of wasted potential.

From the beginning the story to me had a clear path that bakugo wasn't supposed to be a primary character in the series he was supposed to be something that izuku overcame, he was supposed to be a challenge that showed the damage that society caused but that wasn't the case and the direction that hori took the story ended up harming every aspect of the story whether that be the unexplored plot point of quirkless discirmation (which many speculate is unexplored to make bakugo not look bad) or the final fight between shigaraki and izuku that lacked any build up whatsoever (toga and ochako had a better one because they had time to develop)
So to sum it up while the two characters relationship is present within the series its not a well written one at all and it isn't a primary relationship that develops both izuku and bakugo but more of a relationship that develops bakugos character and hinders izukus character.

Thanks for answering and I'm sorry for being rude because I really was rude, it's just that since all this leaks stuff blew up I've been coming across more and more posts about Midoriya being a loser, useless, etc because he said no to Bakugou, some even saying that Bakugou should take off his suit, the same suit that is a collaboration with the entire Class 1A. So yeah, seeing posts talking about apologies as if Izuku owed him something had me on edge and I rudely wrote on your blog. I apologize and thank you for answering me in such a polite way despite my ask.
oh man i wish you weren’t anon! i really admire that you came back to reply, I def didn't want a sorry, you're really v cool cause not a lot of ppl can be non-defensive nowadays. And you know i liked that you were defending Izuku, which I also feel the need to do when i come across ppl calling deku a cuck? ochaco a gold digger? are you guys insane?
These are fictional characters, there are younger bnha fans reading these posts who are not. they're learning fandom behaviour from you.
I don't want anyone interacting with my BKDK posts if you are okay with/ are encouraging name-calling fictional characters and horikoshi degrading names. Bakudeku shippers who are doing this should rethink whether it’s really bakudeku they love, or whether Izuku is more of a self insert to them.
Non-jokingly slandering Izuku about giving back the suit (remember, izuku is literally half of your OTP) Ask yourself if you would do the same with bakugou if for instance bakugou started bullying him again (impossible to think of, yes, but we also thought it impossible for deku to turn kacchan down, didnt we?)

Okay, since my mind is on "turning gears" mode, rethinking about this post, I do want to add something!
To me, Midoriya doesn't stay stuck in the past. But! He wouldn't forget it.
He's more so someone who would not forget the past but with move forward to make a better future. Be it for many, himself or just another single person. But at the same time, uses the past to help make that better future.
His relationship with Bakugou, I'll use that as an example.
He moved past Bakugou's treatment of him during their earlier years. But he doesn't ignore Bakugou. He doesn't treat Bakugou like a stranger or even denies that they knew each other.
Instead, in the beginning, he tells Bakugou "Hey, I'm not going to be your punching bag anymore". That's him telling him "we're not going to stay stuck on the same path anymore".
He's moving past that.
However, at the same time, he's not going to forget and stop caring about Bakugou. He wants to have a better relationship with Bakugou. He never wanted to stop being friends with Bakugou and he doesn't write him off. He doesn't entirely let Bakugou go.
He does hold onto Bakugou because Bakugou is still an important person to him. If not, the most important person to him.
"This is why we can't have normal conversations!"
Another line (season 2, the BkDk vs All Might fight) from Midoriya in which he acknowledges that they have a rocky relationship, that all they do is come to blows when he just wants to be on the same page as Bakugou.
That whole fight with All Might was one of the few times Midoriya did try to assert some force to get Bakugou to listen to and reason with him.
After that, he doesn't do anything to push their relationship to be better/change. Not like forcefully, like in a "I'm the boss now" kind of way. He doesn't use their past to get what he wants from Bakugou. He doesn't jump into Bakugou's space to go "Hey, Kacchan, today you're going to do what I say so we can be better friends"!
He naturally lets it happen. He naturally is letting Bakugou take the reins of how he wants to proceed on with the relationship. (Especially since after their fight, Midoriya had other things to worry about as did Bakugou for a time.)
That's the thing with Midoriya. He's a little nosy, he does make people's business his own, but one thing he won't do is be forceful against trying to make someone's opinion about something or their whole personality change.
He says his piece and let that person have their own reaction to it. He's just the influence.
After the Ground Beta fight, he doesn't go to Bakugou immediately and be like "Hey, let's be friends again!"
He heard Bakugou out and he does let Bakugou into the whole OFA situation, but he doesn't use that against him to make Bakugou feel like he owes him.
That apology? Bakugou did that on his own. Midoriya never came to him like "you owe me an apology for all the things you did to me".
He's there for Bakugou, he'll support him. But he gives Bakugou that space to develop on his own.
Another example, when he was fighting Lady Nagant.
He brings up her past as a Hero. But not to judge her or hold it against her like "you should have still been a hero". But to understand why she was working with AFO, what happened in her life that changed her. He hears her out and he doesn't tell her "Oh, the Commission wouldn't do that". He just tries to understand her and even though she had been shooting at him, he doesn't hold her past actions against her. He could have let her fall, but he doesn't.
He uses the past, be it his own or someone else's, to understand people and the world around him.
Don't forget, Midoriya isn't stupid. And he isn't all that naive.
He doesn't just brush things under the rug. He's not that big of a pushover.
Horikoshi could have easily written Midoriya to give Bakugou excuses or nag at Bakugou about being terrible towards him during their childhood years.
But that's not Midoriya.
Again, he still cares for Bakugou, he would fight for Bakugou, but what he doesn't do is pretend Bakugou mistreated him or holds it against him.
Bakugou is his past, but Midoriya still wants him there in the present and future.
He won't forget a past. But he doesn't use it against people for his own gain. He brings up the past because he wants to make a better future. He doesn't want to live in the dark and pretend everything is all fine and dandy. He doesn't live in some illusion. He knows not everything is black and white. In fact, he's one of the few (and sometimes it feels like he's the only character) characters that acknowledges the world is a bunch of greys.
At the same time, Midoriya moves on, not for the sake wanting to forget something or someone because he can't handle it. He moves on because he wants something better. He wants to improve. You can't improve if you're stuck on something you can let go.
He learns from the past to have something better in the future. He acknowledges the past because without it, there wouldn't be a present or a future.
Again, I just think Midoriya is the type of person to move on. The type of person who wants to grow, but he just doesn't forget the roots as to where he started.
I say he's moved on from his rocky past with Bakugou and what he has done to him, yes, but he doesn't forget it. He doesn't forget their past, he doesn't forget Bakugou. I'm sure he even still has that All Might card. It's a reminder of what they used to be like. What they could be like now.
Just my opinion, that's all. Not saying you have to agree. It's just something I wanted to clear up and add onto that ask I answered. I honestly have doubts anyone feels the same I do about this.

Thelreads, MHA 270, Replies Part 2
1) “We- We`re inside Shigaraki`s mind or something? It must be, since he`s there and there`s a, quite frankly, concerning number of disembodied hands floating around.
we`re about to go down a fucking weird trip, aren`t we?”- We’re going on an inception trip into shiggy-boy’s braincase….in fact, we’re not even the first ones taking up residence inside his cracked mindspace…
2) “Fuck if I know Shigaraki, you have quite the interesting imagination, I wish my dreams were half that abstract. Then again, I was never comatose, as far as I know.”- And as a side-effect of his awakened/ascended mentality, Tomura’s ‘ethereal’ white hair has become almost negative space around his head, almost looking like Horikoshi simply didn’t draw the pages around him. 3) “OH OKAY FUCK FUCK FUCK I KNEW THINGS WERE GOING TO GET WEIRD
WE`RE GONNA DEAL WITH A BIT OF THAT LINGERING TRAUMA FROM THE PAST, AREN`T WE?
I AM NOT READY FOR IT
NOT AT ALL”- Hard to call it ‘lingering’ when AFO actively cultivated Tomura’s mentality to keep it first and foremost inside his emotional core, always pushing him forwards even when he’d repressed the hell out of it. His mind is nothing but trauma, and he’s only now recently started to mature enough to start owing that damage as being what he thinks of himself as. He sees himself through the broken mirror of his mind, each piece a cracked reflection of the boy he started as and what he could have been. 4) “OH IT`S STILL HER, AND SHE`S REMINDING US AND SHIGARAKI OF THAT PARTICULAR MOMENT”- If this broken landscape is what makes up his mind, then tragically, the pieces of it that allow him to hold his ‘self’ together and avoid floating away in the chaos are the very ones that relate to his childhood trauma- the thing that breaks him inside paradoxically holds him together even beyond what other people could endure. 5) “I wonder, do Shigaraki even remembered that she apologized for what she had done? He wasn`t paying much attention at the time, but did he ever recalled that she regretted making him suffer like that?”- Being that this seems to almost be like Shigaraki’s memories of his family overlapping with that night and what he’d think they would say to him now, it sorta implies that he does remember – like, this whole sequence is a little unclear if it’s all in his head, or if him being technically dead means that he’s communing with his family’s lingering ghosts, or if he’s using the memories of his family to talk to himself through their images, putting the words in their mouths to converse with himself as he processes his current situation. Nana herself seems to be the anomaly here, but that itself might also be because of her lingering vestige preserved within OFA…which itself has some undefined link to AFO, as shown by him likewise sensing the changes to the twin Quirk within Tartarus when the additional Quirks started awakening. 6) “AGAIN, DID SHIGARAKI EVER THOUGHT ABOUT HIS DREAM SINCE THEN? EVEN IF ONLY TO SAY “FUCK THAT, HEROES SUCK”?”- I think he’s thought about it by not thinking about it – like the answer is one he already known deep down on an emotional, instinctual level, but it’s all wrapped up underneath the layers of trauma and pain involved with that night, and he finds it easier to think about the hurt that motivates him more than the uncomfortable answer lurking underneath all that sorrow and lashing out. Eventually, he will have to give a voice to that answer, but at present, his current situation means he can focus on attacking the heroes rather than wasting time navel-gazing and considering whether it’s even a possibility to turn back anymore. 7) “SOMETHING TELLS ME HE DIDN`T, CONSIDERING HIS EXPRESSION TOWARDS THE GIANT IMAGINARY MILF. OH GOD, EITHER THIS WHOLE SHIT IS GOING TO GO REALLY BAD, OR IT WILL GO REALLY, REALLY BAD”-Considering that the ‘itchiness’ is tied thematically to Tomura’s apparent longing to ‘destroy’ things, she’s as good as telling him that his revenge on the world that denied him will only lead to him wanting to destroy more and more until he has nothing left, but AFO has groomed Tomura so thoroughly that he’s convinced himself that existing in this miserable situation of his own violation is what makes him ‘him’ now, like he’s felt this pain for so long, it’s warped around to being comforting. Like Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, Tomura has immersed himself in the role of the villain, even if it’s in opposition to his childhood dream, because he feels like he has nothing else left outside of it, and can only make the best of his situation by embracing the perks it provides him, even if he’s unsatisfied with it all at his core.
8) “FUCK FUCK FUCK IT`S BABYGARAKI AGAIN
OH GOD OH FUCK THIS IS REALLY SPIRALING OUT OF CONTROL”-He says he’s ok, but only because he’s gotten so used to the misery of his current existence that he can’t imagine a life where he’s not the villain anymore, where he’s not the outsider rejected by society who can only destroy. His body reverts back to the child he was when he first found the photograph, showing that the desire to be a hero is still deeply wrapped up in his core identity, even if he’s convinced himself it’s impossible, and his eyes aren’t quite focused and full of emotions like they were when he was idolising nana’s image. He claims he’s fine, but it’s clearly deflection on how he really feels- and given this may be part of his own mind speaking to him through his memories, it could also be seen as him burying the last shreds of his conscience before he awakens to bring misery to all, reaffirming that this is what he wants to himself.
9) “OH OKAY IT SEEMS LIKE WE HAVE REACHED A CONCLUSION TO THIS WHOLE SPIRITUAL TRIP TO THE PAST, AND THE RESULTS ARE IN:
EVERYBODY RUN THE FUCK AWAY, SHIT`S GONNA OBLITERATE THE FAN”- As he affirms that he’s fine with being the destructive villain, the memory of his father attacking him surfaces- the first time he used his power maliciously, and thus the first time he experienced the pleasant joy and satisfaction that came with using his powers to hurt those who oppressed him, essentially the part of his mind that revels in the joy of being a villain reminding him of the origin of that desire.
10) “WELP, THE TRAUMA PUT HIM ON THIS TRIAL, AND SHIGARAKI DECIDED ON HOW TO DEAL WITH IT. THE ONLY WAY HE EVER KNEW OF DEALING WITH IT”- It’s tragic, but Tenko’s confidence and fearlessness in facing what would normally be a traumatic memory that repressed him and destroying it with his own willpower and the strength he now possesses is somewhat inspiring as well. You can’t help but wonder how he’d have turned out if he was given some positive learning experiences instead of a troubled upbringing before he massacred his family.
11) “OH, NOW IT`S YOU. RIGHT. YEAH IF WE`RE TALKING ABOUT TRAUMA OF COURSE YOU WOULD SHOW UP IN HIS HEAD. THE FUCK YOU`RE GONNA SHOW HIM AS WELL?”-Well, he did help plant the bad thoughts of Tomura being an inherently destructive monster in his head in the first place- it gave him an easy way in in more ways than one… 12) “WAIT WAIT THEFUVKX THAT IS NOT AN HALLUCINATIOLN
THAT IS NOT
FUCK
THAT`S THE REAL ONME ISN`T IT
OH GOD WHAT THWE FUCK
HE`S TALKING TO HIM
AND HE`S TELLING HIM TO COME TAKE HIM OUT OF HIS CELL”- Not quite- the devil can’t take your soul entirely unless you willingly sign the contract of your own free will…. (MHA ch 246)
13) “Now, the doctor just wants some clarification before he gets started, and I’m wondering how many quirks he’s gonna shove inside his twink frame. He still needs to leave some room for the cherry on top of the cake, the quirk of All for One, that one is still behind bars, but soon he’ll be back…
Soon™”- Or he’s prepping him for All For one’s quirk all along, because it’s better long term for him to just finalise his body right from the start and have the ability to stockpile unlimited power already in him, rather than building up to it gradually by adapting his vessel pieces by piece to handle multiple quirks. All For One does seem to have some kind of innate resistance against the natural devastation that would result from containing multiple quirks at once, a trait shared with its twin, much to Deku’s benefit, so rather than toughen Tomura’s body up by adding increasing numbers of quirks into his modified frame one by one, it’s easier for Ujiko to just prep him to handle the entirely of All For One all at once and let the quirk’s natural abilities handle the blowback of gaining so much power in one go. Granted, the process isn’t pretty by a long shot, but Tomura’s made it quite clear he doesn’t give a damn about winning any beauty competitions, which is good, because he was looking worse off than even Dabi on that operating table. @thelreads

BnHA Chapter 306: the beginning of the WHAT
Previously on BnHA: Nana and the Gang were all, “hey Deku, we can read your thoughts and feelings so we should already know the answer to this, but for some reason we want to quiz you on whether or not you’d be down to kill Shigaraki Tomura.” Deku was all, “um okay, well tbh, probably not seeing as Saving People has been my entire thing since literally the start of the series.” The Vestiges were all, “yes that makes perfect sense and again we already knew that, but well, good for you buddy and I’m glad we had this talk. Anyway I guess we should ask these two cryptic fuckers in the corner to finally turn around now before we run out of -- ” and then the chapter ended. Because OF COURSE IT DID.
Today on BnHA: Horikoshi is all “YOU DON’T NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT, WOULDN’T IT BE SO MUCH BETTER IF I GAVE YOU A CONFUSING CHAPTER WHERE EVERYONE FINALLY LEARNS ABOUT OFA, AND GOES BACK TO THE DORMS, AND THEN THE CHAPTER ENDS WITH DEPRESSED NOMAD DEKU STANDING ON A PRECIPICE WITH GRAN TORINO’S TATTERED CAPE FLOWING IN THE WIND.” Everyone is all, “???????????” Horikoshi is all, “also the parents are moving to the U.A. campus, and Jeanist’s neck is two and a half feet long, for everyone that was wondering.” Everyone is all, “WHERE ARE KACCHAN AND TODOROKI AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WHO ARE THE SECOND AND THIRD USERS”, and Horikoshi is all, “:)” and fades away into nothingness like the fucking fae he is. Like a fucking imp who’s kept his end of the cursed bargain. What, the, fuck.
okay guys, so after the longest Thursday of my fucking life, during which I was secretly hoping that my spoiler containment net would be somehow be breached, inadvertently exposing me to theta spoiler radiation, so that I could be all “oh no... spoilers... there’s nothing I can do... I have no choice but to look” (which sadly did not happen), it is finally Friday and the chapter is finally out. so I’ve got my clown kit at the ready and other self-deprecating memes on standby, and I’m ready to go. and I should note that I’m also ready for Horikoshi to pull some absolute bullshit and be like, “oh you know what, we haven’t checked in with Rat Principal in a while have we” and spend the entire chapter on nonsense like that. I’M READY FOR FUCKING ANYTHING so bring it
(ETA: it would be nice if this man wouldn’t call my bluff every now and again.)
oh, right, we were due a color page! wow look at this

isn’t this supposed to be the future?? what’s with all of these staticky CRT TVs
anyway, so! is this the first time we’ve seen Tomura’s stylish finger prosthetic glove thingy in color?? because I didn’t expect it to be red. also, at some point you just have to give in and change your pants into cutoffs or something, Tomura. start a new trend of stylish villain capris
meanwhile Deku is dressed like he’s going on a journey into the desert to find a mystical oasis. actually this cape looks a lot like Gran Torino’s. I have to go back and see if Gran’s is all raggedy like this
(ETA: it wasn’t before but APPARENTLY IT IS NOW. I also forgot that Horikoshi had showed it sitting on a side table in the hospital a few chapters ago.)
lastly, AFO looks like someone’s thumb after they’ve been washing dishes for twenty minutes. you are just the ugliest dude in history, and as always, fuck you
HAHAHA SOB I KNEW IT

oh, Twowy McTwoface is finally starting to turn around? better CUT BACK TO DEKU’S HOSPITAL ROOM THEN. wouldn’t want to accidentally ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS or SOLVE ANY MYSTERIES, god forbid
well, whatever. whatever!! anyway so now someone’s knocking at the door. I say “someone” but we all know it’s Hawks
yep

they were actually standing outside the door for a while hoping they’d overhear another juicy plot conversation, but no such luck this time
lmaooo Jeanist wtf

acting all embarrassed, but you’re really just as curious as Hawks is. making him do all the dirty work for you huh
ARE YOU SERIOUS THIS IS AN INJUSTICE

so like two seconds after Katsuki gets dragged away you open the door for the rest of them!! well, fine!! I really want it to be a more private/personal moment between the two of them anyway so let the other kids check in on Deku first then
and in the meantime, time to see Hawks put the thumbscrews to All Might’s resolve lol

I wonder how much of it Hawks has already put together in the last five minutes. One for All is something connected to All for One that Tomura seems to want. Tomura was apparently targeting Deku. that’s more than enough to make a few deductions right there. I wonder how much Hawks knows about Deku’s quirk. he did watch the sports festival, and he ran into the kids interning under Endeavor that one time
okay well maybe he hasn’t put the rest of it together just yet, but Hawks is making a pretty reasonable pitch here to All Might

also this is a pretty spectacular view. is this a hospital or a hotel??
AHLKJLKJLKJ ARE YOU SERIOUSLY GOING TO TELL THEM
OH MY GOD HE IS?!?!

JUST LIKE WE ALL EXPECTED, THE NEXT TWO PEOPLE TO LEARN THE TRUTH ABOUT OFA ARE GOING TO BE HAWKS, AND BEST FUCKING JEANIST
-- LFKLKKLDK ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS. ARE YOU --

( •̀_•́ )

[sitting cross-legged on the ground pulling up little clumps of grass and letting them fall from my fingers one by one] yeah. sure. okay. fine. sure
-- OKAY, NO. NUH-UH. NO

everybody better hold tight cuz I’m about to pick up this whole chapter and yeet it into the ocean like a fucking frisbee lol
HORIKOSHI I DON’T CARE ABOUT THESE PEOPLE SITTING HERE WATCHING TV WTF
-- OH

well okay then. proceed. though lord help me if they’re about to reveal the secret of OFA to the whole fucking world skdkj
oh snap

well, there it is. pretty much what I expected, but it’s good to actually get to see this moment with him taking responsibility
though at the same time, thank you Horikoshi for not forcing us to sit through the rest of that

their fucking faces omg. okay but seriously, what nation doesn’t secretly love a good scandal

the Endeavor Pamphlets, part two. thank you for giving the country something to opine about on twitter in these trying times, Enji
so now they’re asking about Hawks and Jeanist but I cannot even focus on anything all of a sudden because what?!

is Jeanist even a real actual human being you guys?! are we sure he’s not three kids sitting on each other’s shoulders?? are you related to that one guy with the really long neck from the Jedi Council?? are you Orochimaru, bro??
so now Hawks is apologizing for the murder of Twice, and for hiding the connection with his dad

the fact that he has to give this serious formal apology and beg forgiveness for the shameful crime of Having An Abusive Father is really something else, though. just. it’s realistic, but I still hate it
moving on now to the one thing he actually does owe the public an explanation for

not to go all “Hawks did nothing wrong” on you guys yet again, but seriously. 100% facts. fandom can (and no doubt will) debate this until the end of time, but if Twice had gotten away they wouldn’t be having this press conference right now because there wouldn’t be any heroes left to give one. anyways though, I’ve already said more than enough about that in previous posts
so now some severe-looking lady with the weirdest fingers I’ve ever seen is saying that her mother was injured during Machia’s rampage

and she’s basically all “a fuck lot of good ‘I’m sorry’ does us all about now.” true true
wow she’s really getting fired up

and now Enji is basically saying that he understands that an apology isn’t enough, and what they really need now are solutions. okay, well! SO THEN WHAT IS THE PLAN THEN
hmmfsdgh

this eloquent PEZ dispenser makes a good point you guys
wait, hold up

CERTAIN citizens?? um excuse me, what??
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh shit

holy shit. well, this will go over well
okay! so this tells me a number of things, though
basically the minute that Hawks learned about One for All, he realized that anyone connected to Deku (e.g. Inko) would be a target for AFO. AFO wants OFA, meaning AFO wants Deku, and one of the easiest ways to get to Deku would be to target his family
Hawks therefore realized that Inko needed to be placed into protective custody
but the fact that ALL of the hero course students’ families (and is it only the U.A. hero course, or all of the hero course students across the country?) are being given protection tells me that Hawks and co. don’t want to single Deku out as being important. so then it looks like they’re not going to tell everyone about OFA (or at least not the public. which, good). so rather than drawing suspicion by saying “we’ve got to protect everyone connected with this one kid”, they’re making it seem like all the U.A. kids’ families are getting this treatment
but since the heroes are now spread so thin, they can’t just send a protective detail to each and every family, so they’re bringing all of the families to the same place instead to better keep an eye on them
so that’s all well and good, and a very smart move. except that idk how all of this is going to go over with the general public, all of whom are probably feeling unsafe at the moment, and who will probably see this as preferential treatment -- basically just the heroes looking after their own and leaving everyone else to fend for themselves
(ETA: okay so @hanashimas’ translation clarifies that U.A. is offering their services as an evacuation shelter for everyone who wants it, not just the families of the U.A. students. that’s much more appropriate so I withdraw my previous “wtf” reaction lol.)
anyway though here’s Mitsuki and Inko

can we take this as confirmation that the two of them really are friends? that’s one piece of fanon that I’ve always hoped was true, so I’m gonna go ahead and say it’s confirmed
(ETA: also this means that Hagakure’s parents (or maybe “parents” in quotation marks) will supposedly be moving in as well. sure am curious as to how that’s going to go.)
now someone in the press crowd is asking whether U.A. can provide adequate security, which is honestly the LAST thing I expected these people would be outraged about lol. shows what I know I guess
(ETA: again though, this makes sense if the “certain civilians” thing was just a translation error.)

did he go with Deku?? did he get a chance to talk to him before he left?? did he get his own private letter which he read and then promptly blew up in a fit of panicked rage?? is he going to go after him?? DOES HORIKOSHI KNOW WHAT HE’S DOING TO ME RIGHT NOW?? OF COURSE HE DOES, DON’T BOTHER ANSWERING THAT
omg. though actually the fact that we’ve already jumped a few weeks forward makes me hopeful that there won’t actually be another timeskip, or at least not much of one. I’m sure that’ll be the big debate of the week, but I don’t think we can jump too far forward here. for starters because of that All Might prophecy I mentioned. and also because TomurAFO isn’t just going to wait around for months. and also because I’m 100% sure that Deku’s running-away backpack is just filled ENTIRELY WITH NOTEBOOKS and this asshole cannot possibly survive more than 3 days on his own. UNLESS SOMEONE COMES TO HELP HIM THAT IS. OR SOMEONES, EVEN. OMG. omg omg omg. fuck this chapter lmao

Right except MHA is still a story with a heavy focus on reconciliation and atonement. Endeavor-Todoroki storyline and Bakugou and Midoriya’s storyline also aren’t the exceptions, the LOV are like the biggest example of this. I’m not saying people aren’t allowed to have opinions either, I just don’t get why people read BNHA, then get mad when the story does exactly what it basically set out to do from the jump. Telling a story about someone undeserving was never in the cards, so what I’m saying is, why are people upset/shocked about that not being how the story goes.
I also don’t think BNHA has a “fatal flaw of stripping away the agency the victims have” specifically when we’re talking about Midoriya/Todoroki. Disregarding occasional painful lukewarm writing on Horikoshi’s part (which I’m sure we can both agree on), Todoroki & Midoriya have agency in their plotlines? Midoriya outright says Todoroki is deciding whether or not to forgive Endeavor depending on his behavior. When Bakugou apologizes he doesn’t force Midoriya to become his friend again, in fact he gives that decision to Midoriya, who still hasn’t actually given his final say on the matter. Neither has Todoroki. Both Endeavor and Bakugou grapple with the fact that just because they apologize and change, doesn’t mean they’re owed forgiveness. Something Bakugou also says in his apology, I believe?
I will say that’s a fair point that you don’t necessarily agree that it’s “good writing”, mostly because I agree that Horikoshi has somewhat fumbled Bakugou’s character in more recent chapters. That being said, I hope you can understand what I mean by this!
Every time I see people complain that MHA’s “biggest problems” are the “Endeavor-Todoroki” storyline and the “Bakugou-Midoriya” storyline it makes me feel really smart because what did these people think was going to happen in the story about reconciliation and atonement. Why are you reading the reconciliation and atonement story and being shocked when major plot lines surround reconciliation and atonement.
#Bnha critical#Hmm i hope this makes sense#im not talking about opniions#im talking about the storys structure#like if bnha is a circle … its not going to fit a square shaped block.#as in#just because you think it should tell a story about how some people are undeserving#doesnt mean that is what bnha is going to do#Also respectfully i dont think my blog is for you 😭#I think my stance on bakugou and endeavor are completely opposite yours

Out of curiosity, can you elaborate on your issues with Bakugo's character arc? Because, frankly, I think he has one of the better "bully turned rival turned friend" arcs I have seen in a shonen manga in a while. His character being so nuanced is part of the reason why I haven't lost hope on Horikoshi, even if some cracks in his writing are definitely showing.
I… have a lot of thoughts and they are all over the place. Keep in mind this is just my opinion and is heavily influenced by my frustration with other series (especially shonen). What doesn’t work for me may work for others and that’s fine.
One of the reasons I found Bakugou (and Midoriya) interesting at first was because it seemed that their relationship was going to avoid the imo overdone cliches of rivalries in shonen. Especially because it depicted relentless, cruel bullying seriously, or at least more seriously that, say, what Naruto and Sasuke had (at first at least).
Midoriya had clear mental scars (that exist to this day, though Bakugou’s responsibilty for them seems to be sorta handwaved, more on that on a second*) and while he admired Bakugou for his powers and guts, he also resented him (for good reason!) and had no interest in either converting him to the light nor being his friend, he just wanted to be left alone. On the other hand Bakugou’s issues with Midoriya were less “I’m a lonely, traumatized shithead with a heart of gold that hides that he rly wants friends deep down” and more of a “everybody in my life has gassed me up as the best thing ever created and anybody even thinking I need help feels like a personal insult”.
There is too much baggage there for me to ever buy them as close friends. Forgiveness? Respect? Yeah I can see that, but there’s a point of no return for friendships and bullying somebody for more than ten years and telling them to kill themselves is, for me, a point of no return. Just like Endeavor abusing his family is a point of no return. You get that atonement dude, doesn’t mean your family owes you shit.
This also ties to a lesson that shonen series in general refuse to confront, that... not everybody is going to like you, even if you are the most perfect cinnamon roll to ever exist. Even if you go through character development.
Bakugou owes Midoriya an apology, he doesn’t owe him a friendship. And Midoriya doesn’t owe Bakugou forgiveness OR a friendship. They both found good friendships without the baggage in other places and forcing BFF on them cause SHONEN OPPOSITES is... incredibly boring to me.
I don’t mind Bakugou changing, but I feel there should be consequences for how he acted. I find that waaaaay more interesting than “bully eventually realizes main character is awesome now that he’s powerful and can beat his ass, they hug it out and they become buddies”. It also imo robs Midoriya of one of his most interesting “flaws”, resentment. Why should he want to forgive and forget? Even if Bakugou finally apologizes to him, why does he owe him a friendship? *Ok back to the scars thing, which ties with my issues with All Might’s relationship with both kids.
Bakugou shouldn’t have been the first to learn about AFO/OFA and that he did before he properly repented and apologized to Midoriya places a huge cloud on his redemption, because to me it looks like he had to learn All Might’s legacy lives on Deku and that’s what makes his live worthy of... living.
Any nice gesture Bakugou now makes towards him will now have me wondering “would he do this if he didn’t know Midoriya was all that’s left of AM’s legacy? If he didn’t have a quirk?”
There are two main sources of Midoriya’s need to prove himself to the point of disregarding his own life. One of them is the huge weight All Might has placed on his shoulders. He’s the living legacy of a man he idolizes and never questions, a man that doesn’t seem to be taking this as seriously as he should. The other is that he was called a quirkless, useless loser for most of his life.
To Midoriya, his worth lies on using his borrowed quirk to save people, not on his heart, not on his guts, not on his brains. And the only people he can talk about it are the folks that caused those issues in the first place. That’s heartbreaking.
One last point, it’s all about the tone. Hori wants to have his cake and eat it too
We are supposed to find Bakugou’s bullying horrifying… but also amusing? Bakugou throwing his pointy costume at Midoriya would be slapstick hilarious… if they didn’t have the history they have. So what is it Hori? Was it so bad it left mental scars on your protagonist or ok enough that we can joke about it and everything is leading up to them being BFF in the near future?
You can’t have both.

»»—————————————♡ —————————————««
(Y/N)’s father returned the next morning. The storm was long gone and was replaced by the clear blue sky. They had opened up their store, as usual, made bread and followed the routine. Shoto insisted on helping out however he could but he knew he had to figure something out. He couldn’t stay at their place forever.
The afternoon slump rolled over so the (L/N) family decided it was time to address the issue. Except (Y/N), none of them knew why Shoto came to their house, all drenched. (Y/N)’s mother offered to look after the store while (Y/N) and her father sat Shoto down for a conversation.
“I owe you an explanation. I’m grateful to your wife and daughter didn’t ask me much and accepted me into the house. I’ll tell you everything,” Shoto said to (Y/N)’s father.
(Y/N), sitting beside Shoto, looked at him, and said, “You don’t have to force yourself.”
“Thank you but it’s fine. Your parents should know about it,” Shoto said.
“Take your time. I just want to know a little so I can understand the situation. We just want to help you,” (Y/N)’s father said, calmly.
“Thank you, (L/N)-san,” Shoto replied.
Shoto explained everything to (Y/N)’s father excluding the thing with his mother and his scar. He just told him that his mother wasn’t living in the same house as him.
(Y/N)’s father listened intently, processing the situation at hand and trying to think of a solution. “I understand where you’re coming from. I won’t force you to return but you need to figure this out. I’ll see what I can do, you can stay at our place for the time being. It’s Saturday today so we still have time before school so we can take things one at a time.”
“Thank you so much. How can I repay your kindness?” Shoto asked, genuinely feeling supported by an adult for the first time in his life.
“It’s completely normal to help someone out. Like I always encourage (Y/N) to help people out if she can. So it’s our pleasure. In return, please take care of (Y/N),” (Y/N)’s father said with a kind smile.
“Papa!” (Y/N) said.
“I’ll do my best. I’ll help however I can while I figure things out,” Shoto replied.
(Y/N) didn’t say much and let the two converse. She wanted the best for Shoto. She was really grateful that her parents were so understanding and supportive otherwise she couldn’t have done anything for Shoto. She wanted to be there for him in any way possible.
The conversation continued till (Y/N)’s mother came to the living room and said, “Todoroki-kun, someone is here to see you.”
Shoto expected it to be Hirugami since his father wouldn’t just leave him be. He sighed and stood up, getting ready to sternly tell Hirugami to leave. Shoto walked out of the living room, following (Y/N)’s mother. (Y/N) quickly joined Shoto.
Shoto and (Y/N) walked out of the bakery as that is where (Y/N)’s mother said the person was. Shoto stood dead in his tracks when he saw who it was. (Y/N) bumped against him since she was walking close behind him.
(Y/N) looked at who it was. It was a tall man with crimson hair and turquoise eyes. Exactly like the left side of Shoto’s face. ‘He’s his father, isn’t he?’
The man, Enji, walked up to Shoto and said, “Shoto, can we talk?”
Enji looked like he didn’t get any sleep and seemed rather remorseful. Shoto said harshly, “I’ve got nothing to say to you anymore. How’d you find this place?!”
“I got Hirugami to check around and he saw you here,” Enji replied.
“Please, can we talk?”
Shoto turned to leave but (Y/N) put her hand on his shoulder and said, “At least hear him out, okay? You can decide what to do later.”
Shoto hesitated and then said with a sigh, “Alright since you’re telling me to.”
(Y/N) gave him a worried smile and Shoto turned around, “I’ll listen for a bit.”
“Thank you, Shoto. You too, miss. Thank you for asking him to listen,” Enji said, truly grateful to have Shoto hear him out.
Shoto begrudgingly sat down at the chairs outside the bakery. Fortunately, there weren’t any customers so they wouldn’t bother anyone. (Y/N) went inside to give them privacy. Shoto wished for her to be there but he didn’t want to involve her directly with his father.
The father and son sat in silence for a good bit. Shoto rolled his eyes, not expecting anything from Enji except him trying to drag him back home.
“Shoto...I-”
Enji looked directly at Shoto, bowed his head down, and said, “I’m so sorry, Shoto.”
“I’m sorry?” Shoto said.
“Is that what you’re here for?! A measly apology?!”
“Shoto, I thought about what you said yesterday. I-I didn’t realize that I wasn’t thinking of you...I was only thinking about myself…,” Enji said, quietly.
A sorry state to see him like that because Enji was always loud and confident but the man that sat before Shoto was truly pathetic. Maybe he was truly sorry. Not that apology would erase the trauma he had inflicted upon his family.
“Now you realize? All my life, you controlled every single thing I did. You drove mom crazy and sent her to the hospital. And now you’re sorry?!”
“I know what I did was unforgivable. I won’t ask for your forgiveness or Rei’s but I want the chance to make things right…,” Enji said, strain in his voice.
Shoto spat back, “You think I’ll believe your words? Saying things is easy but actually doing something isn’t that simple. I don’t believe you can change.”
“I don’t expect you to believe me right away but know that I want to change. I spent last night reflecting everything I’ve done and I know I’ve wronged many people. I took the day off today to come to you and apologize.”
“Rei doesn’t want to see me at all so I left her a letter instead. I can’t take back what I’ve done but I want to at least do things right from now on,” Enji said, head still hanging down.
He truly was apologetic for his past actions but only time will tell if it was all bark and no bite or not.
Shoto looked away from Enji, not saying anything else. He felt it was futile and letting out his anger at him didn’t make him feel any better.
“I won’t force you to come home with me but I hope you will understand that you can’t stay at this place forever. I’ll thank this bakery’s owner. Truly, I’m really sorry. I regret how I treated you and your mother.”
Enji stood up to go into the bakery and Shoto didn’t say a word. He couldn’t believe that Enji would feel sorry. Or ever reflect on his own actions. His head was in a mess, he couldn’t really believe anything Enji said. He grew up knowing his father to be a self-centered man who only saw his own ambitions and never cared about anyone. This ‘apology’ from Enji really threw him off. Shoto could never forgive him but a sliver of hope unexpectedly grew in him that Enji would change.
Shoto sighed as (Y/N) walked to him. “You okay?”
“No, not really,” Shoto said with a deep sigh.
“I don’t know what you guys talked about but I know you can get through it. You can talk to me, I’m here for you,” (Y/N) said, softly.
Before Shoto could reply, Enji came out of the bakery. “Goodbye, Shoto, miss (L/N). Your bakery is lovely.”
Enji left and Shoto felt he could breathe again. Shoto turned to (Y/N) and sighed.

After reading your last ask, I feel the same way about k*tsuki and how badly he bullied my good boi mido. I don't understand why the fandom likes him and I probably never will, but I do hold deep resentment against my bully and I just wish that midoriya calls out this explodo bitch!!!!
BIG SAME, NONY. I’m glad that you agree with me because oof so many people in this fandom excuse that bully’s behavior and it’s exhausting. Izuku is such a good kid and a sweetheart and like he does things that I’m like okay fine, it can be seen as nerdy and sometimes people don’t like that he analyzes them. He can’t please everyone and keep in mind, he has been isolated from having friends because of the bullying so I would imagine he doesn’t know some social cues, too? So like give this child a break, he is doing his best and doesn’t mean any harm by his behavior (unless he’s determined to kick a villain’s ass then by all means fuck them up, Izuku). Also nony, you don’t have to forgive your abuser if you don’t want to. You don’t owe them anything and frankly they don’t deserve your forgiveness because they did bad things to you so fuck them. k*tsuki’s popularity is confusing and leaves a bad taste in my mouth because like I understand that it’s fiction and everyone loves using that as an excuse to love him, but I’m over here like lmfao??? I got bullied for 4 years by the same girl and she would go for my disability, too. ANd she never apologized, and I never forgave her. So I take it so personal, you understand, since you also hold these deep feelings about your bully. SO LIKE it’s just infuriating and pretty nauseating to witness how this fandom kisses a bully’s ass and calls him soft and pretty and cute and precious baby, like please get away from me, I can’t believe what I’m reading. Are we reading the same thing because??? He is none of those things?? He is a literal asshole. So YEAH Izuku really does deserve better and he deserves better friends if he considers someone like HIM a friend. He has the entirety of class 1A (sans m*neta) RIGHT THERE. What is Izuku waiting for? This friendship can’t be any more forced because it hasn’t reached its peak yet, but Horikoshi is delivering the bullshit so faithfully and I don’t trust his driving. Let Izuku have a better childhood friend 2020.

What do you like in Endmight? I personally don't see it but I'd love a shipper's insight. :)
Hoo boy. I have to apologize! I’ve been sitting on this ask because I couldn’t figure out a way to answer it without it getting long, and I haven’t had the energy for that. ^^;
So Imma woman up and give it to you, finally.
Both All Might and Endeavor are absolutely fascinating, super complex characters. They are the two strongest heroes in the series, are driven by powerful emotions and motivations, save people for a living, have some seriously angsty shit going on in their lives, and one of them is deeply, deeply flawed while the other is Practically Perfect In Every Way (seemingly. He has some pretty serious weaknesses he could use some help on).
They’ve occupied the top two hero spots for literally decades. Endeavor is the only character we know, in fact, who is probably pretty close to All Might’s age, enough so that they could potentially have even gone to school together. If nothing else, they’ve at least been aware of each other since their early twenties, when they went pro. So they’ve got a long history.
Oh, yeah, and it just so happens that one of them is COMPLETELY OBSESSED with the other, and has been basing his entire life around the other for most of his life. I’ll let you guess which one. XD
Color added to emphasize Enji’s staring.
Haven’t colored this one, but it’s the same with the staring. Seriously. Check out pretty much any picture where they are in the same frame, and 99% of the time, if he’s not sitting right next to him, Enji will probably be staring at Toshinori. That doesn’t even change with Small Might! I’m pretty sure no matter what happens, whenever All Might is around, Enji will always be drawn toward him like a moth to a flame (heh). He just can’t help himself.
What’s really interesting is that according to canon, Endeavor himself acknowledges All Might as the greatest hero, far beyond any other hero. He genuinely admires and respects All Might as a hero and struggles on with him as his goal despite the crippling feelings of inferiority that he suffers from as a result.
As a hero, he was constantly compared to All Might and found lacking.
Hawks tell us that no other hero even TRIED to bridge the gap- they all just gave up on equaling All Might as impossible, much less surpassing him. Even Endeavor himself realized it was impossible, enough that very quickly after making the number 2 spot in his youth, he started embarking on a plan to pass his dream on to the next generation. Despite feeling that it was hopeless, he continued to keep trying, himself. He never, ever stopped.
Of course, this obsession resulted in him doing some pretty terrible things in his family life, enough that he was initially introduced to us as almost a villain. But over the course of the series, there’s a dramatic change for the better in him, owing a great deal to All Might.
Later on, when Endeavor is being officially announced as the number 1 hero at an awards ceremony, before he tells the audience about the kind of number 1 he wants to be, he remembers the above advice from All Might and simply tells them to “watch me.”
So All Might isn’t just an inspiration to him to become a stronger hero, but also to become a better person. A better hero. And a better father.
For All Might’s part, he seems to truly want to get closer to Endeavor, wants to get to know him. He continually seeks him out to talk and invites him out for tea. We see this once in the manga and twice in the light novel, which means it’s probably happened a LOT over the years.
And tell me you didn’t cheer when AFO was about to wipe All Might out and Endeavor blocked his attack.
youtube
These two are crackling with chemistry and emotion around each other. There is SO MUCH potential for the two of them going forward.
Their relationship has taken on a very different tone after Kamino, and hell, Enji began his reign as number 1 with a reference to All Might’s last battle (whether consciously or not lol).
Suuuuuuuuure, Enji. Sure.
I find it especially interesting that Horikoshi takes their infamous talk at the sports festival, and reverses it when they talk again at the provisional license exam classes.
It went from All Might spotting Endeavor on the stairs and asking to meet up to chat, and then asking him advice on how to educate the next generation…
…to Endeavor spotting All Might on the stairs, asking to meet up for a chat, asking for advice in how to handle the transition of becoming the new top hero, advice which also wound up changing the way he looked at mentoring his son (this was made very clear in the chapter).
Most importantly, Toshinori gave Enji permission to just be himself and find his own way.
With Enji released from the shackles of living up to All Might, and with the ability to look at Toshinori with clear eyes, free of hatred but not of admiration, there is a lot of possibility for the development of their relationship. The way that Enji refers to him as “former number 1″ does not come off as mockery at all. Rather, it smacks of a feeling of respect and equality.
I rather suspect that if Enji ever heard people talking shit about All MIght- like his retirement, his injury, his legacy, etc.- that he would either shut them up or fuck them up.
As far as their personalities go, that is another interesting mix. Their temperaments are definitely different- Enji is a hothead while Toshi rarely loses his temper. Both are extremely efficient and dedicated to their duty, but whereas Enji is frankly being slowly revealed as a giant tsundere, Toshinori’s open kindness and deep empathy are the core part of his heroism. Toshinori is flamboyant and fun-loving, whereas Enji is always serious (will we ever see him genuinely smile?) and has no interest in playing or entertaining fans or whatever. Basically, they are very different people, even if they share some important things in common. It would be interesting to see how they could balance each other out.
Plus, they are just fucking hilarious together, sometimes.
I mean, really
In closing- it also doesn’t hurt that they are both extremely attractive LOL Either you’ve got an extreme case of different body types, or you have a bara double-scoop, and either way is delicious.
And Enji is one of the few people with a physicality and temperament that I can easily see topping Toshinori, which is gold, in my book

deck the halls (with boughs and classmates)
(read on ao3)
@bnhagensecretsanta fic for @kimberlyillumise! Apologies for the lateness, and Happy Holidays - hope you enjoy, and I wish you the best in the coming year!
inspired by Horikoshi’s Christmas sketch!
“Okay, you guys,” Mina said, leaning in, “Focus. This is serious business.”
If the fuzzy red and green antlers perched atop her curly pink hair belied the severity of her statement at all, the effect was offset by the nearly maniacal look in her glittering black eyes. “Is everybody ready? Todoroki, you understand how to play?”
He nodded seriously back at her.
“Shoji, you picked which single pair of hands you’re using?”
Another nod, this one much more sheepish.
“And we figured out how to let Kouda sign without breaking the circle, good – oh, and Bakugou? Dearest Bakubuddy? Kiri’s hand may be burn resistant, but if you set off so much as a spark I will drown you in acid.”
Bakugou scoffed. “Shut up and get on with it, Racoon Eyes.” Nevertheless, he scrubbed his hand roughly over his shirt to get rid of any sweat before slipping it back over Kirishima’s.
Mina glanced around the group one more time. Her classmates were all sitting cross-legged in a lopsided circle, squashed and stretched from where they’d moved a recalcitrant Bakugou three times to keep him from setting off explosions when he clapped his hand against someone else’s. One more check to ensure that each person had their right hand resting atop their neighbor’s left, and it looked like they were finally ready. She took a deep breath and began to chant.
“This is a game of Con-cen-tra-tion, no repeats or hes-i-ta-tion, category is… wintery holiday stuff!”
Bakugou rumbled discontentedly on her right. Uraraka, sitting directly to her left, pumped her fist in the air before slapping it down onto Midoriya’s hand. “Santa!”
Midoriya beamed. “Christmas trees!”
Things went smoothly – gingerbread for Satou, hot chocolate for Tsuyu – until the chain reached Aoyama, who pouted theatrically as he waved a hand for dramatic effect. “Fireworks!”
The mention of an explosive set Bakugou off; he leapt to his knees, pointing threateningly at Aoyama. “That one’s mine, Sparkles! Pick a different one!”
Kirishima tugged at his hand. “Wait – that’s not really how it works-”
“Isn’t it?” Bakugou growled. “If he likes fireworks so bad, let’s see if he can do this-”
“Hey.” The spiky-haired boy jumped as half of his sock dissolved in strings of acidic goo.
“What – those are my clothes!”
“And this is my game, dipshit, sit down and let Aoyama live his life! If you didn’t keep sparking all over the place, we wouldn’t have moved you to be second last!”
Bakugou receded a little, but his scowl seemed permanently affixed. Mina let go of his ankle, flicking bits of melty sock off her fingers, and patted his arm instead. “Come on, we all know you have more than one idea in that big brain of yours.”
One last tug from Kirishima, and Bakugou slumped back into his spot. Mina rubbed her forehead. “Okay, this really isn’t how it’s supposed to go, but let’s just pick it up from Aoyama. Ready, go!”
Aoyama helpfully tapped Ojiro’s hand again. “I said fireworks! The sparkly kind!”
Ojiro’s tail whipped frantically as he thought. “Uh, bells!”
Hagakure’s hoodie bounced next to him. “Christmas sweaters!”
“Reindeer,” Todoroki said, blinking laconically. His eyes were fixed firmly on the jingly bells dangling from Mina’s antlers.
“Balls,” Mineta chanted. He was immediately fixed with dirty looks from half the class. “Um, the ornament kind!”
Tokoyami’s beak clacked disapprovingly. “Turkey.”
“Christmas lights!” Kaminari cheered, accidentally shocking his neighbor.
Sero winced. “That was mine – ow, I’m all tingly, can I have a second to think?”
Mina considered, steepling her fingers. “I’ll allow it.”
“Thanks. Uh… I… ooh, tinsel!”
“Menorahs,” Shoji said quietly, four hands hovering in the air as he used the fifth to tap Kouda’s shoulder.
Kouda hid behind his hands. “Mistletoe,” he signed in front of his blushing face, letting Shoji reach behind him with an extra hand to tap Momo’s wrist.
Momo grinned. “The ghost of Christmas past!”
“Nerd,” someone coughed, and a ripple of laughter raced around the circle as Momo tagged Jirou.
“Ah, snowmen!” Jirou said, still giggling, and slapped Iida’s hand.
Their class president sat straight-backed, slicing his right hand efficiently through the air to tag Kirishima as he spoke. “Santa’s sleigh!”
“Peppermint!” Kirishima yelped – apparently Iida had hit a little too hard.
He cautiously poked Bakugou’s palm. Bakugou, whose brow had been furrowed in though for the last half of the game, grinned evilly. “Fireplaces.”
He tapped Mina, who raised her fist in victory. “Snowflake! Woo! We did it!”
“Uh…” Midoriya said cautiously, “aren’t we supposed to keep going until someone can’t think of another one?”
Mina preened. “Maybe, but this is no ordinary game of Concentration!”
“Then why did you make us practice fifteen times?”
“Because…” Rocking backwards, Mina threw her other hand in the air too. “These are going to be our holiday costumes!”
Dead silence. Momo got halfway through raising her hand before deciding to just ask instead. “What costumes?”
“Wait – Sero, you told everyone that Aizawa-sensei is letting us have a holiday party, right?”
Sero rubbed the back of his head. “I was going to put up flyers in the elevators! I thought that would be cooler.”
“What, did you run out of tape?”
He stuck out his tongue. “Haha, very funny. I didn’t expect you meant to tell everyone within the whole hour after we got the okay!”
She waved him off. “Okay, okay, anyway – we’re having a party! And we’re going to have a costume contest! Isn’t it cool!”
Tsuyu frowned. “I still don’t get why we played this game, kero.”
“Well, we had to make sure no one went as the same thing or it wouldn’t be fair.” Mina grinned. “And I wanted to see what holiday things everyone would think of under pressure!”
The contemplative silence following her statement was broken by near-hysterical laughter from Kirishima. “Oh my god,” he wheezed, collapsing against Bakugou’s shoulder. “You have to dress up as a fireplace.”
Bakugou shoved him off. “I don’t have to do shit.”
His defiance faltered a little under Mina’s smug expression. “Oh, you might want to reconsider that. After all, I haven’t said what the prize is yet!”
His eyes narrowed. “Prize?”
“Let’s just say that All Might-sensei’s sponsoring the competition and he’s got mad cash.”
Explosions crackled in Bakugou’s clenched fists. “In that case… it’s a competition, and I’m gonna win!”
The rest of the class was also dissolving into chaos as Mina reveled in her genius. “A snowman?” Jirou despaired, raking her hands through her hair. “Why didn’t I say Christmas carols, or Ebenezer Scrooge, or something cool? Can I trade you?”
Momo patted her shoulder. “I’ll help you, don’t worry!” Her eyes widened. “Wait… do you think I could make a really big marshmallow for Tsuyu’s?”
Uraraka was draped across Midoriya’s back, ruffling his hair until the shape vaguely resembled a cone. “O-oh, you don’t even have to dress up, you already have green hair! You can just put ornaments in it – you’re gonna look so cute!”
Her grip suddenly turned crushing. “Not as cute as me though. I need money for Christmas presents!”
Midoriya, face brick red, folded under Uraraka’s weight to lean across the circle and tap at Iida’s foot. “Are you actually going to build a sleigh?”
“Midoriya, I have propulsion engines in my legs.” Iida’s glasses shone as he straightened them. “I will be the sleigh.”
They grinned at each other, Uraraka floating herself off Midoriya’s back and onto the floor beside him. “You know, I think there’s a real opportunity here. Group costume?”
Midoriya’s eyes shone with determination. “Group costume.”

1) Thank you for answering! I hope that you don’t mind my continuing this conversation despite not disagreeing with your points - the misogynistic undertones of that forgiveness were heavy enough to drag anyone’s mood down. It’s just that I feel the need to clarify that I’m in no way trying to absolve Horikoshi for writing these people on those circumstances in that way nor to guess if any nuance we extrapolate from it is intentional or not, just to say that an in-universe lens makes it really
(cut for length again and more discussion of fictional dv)
2) easy to empathize with the reactions of the Todoroki women. Maybe even more so than with Natsu’s perfectly natural hope than having their abuser at least recognize how shitty his action were may bring closure, since that puts healing on the hands of said abuser which isn’t constructive. And then there’s Shouto who has been trying to not do that anymore for a while and has felt pressure to work with/under that asshole to achieve his full potential (which, another sadly realistic thing) so of
3) course he can see that for now, regardless of how HE feels about it, the best hope for their mother is that their father’s action reflect this supposed change of heart regardless of genuinity. And I think we are actually supposed to side with that but whether that’s intended for the sake of the victims or the abuser depends on how charitable you are feeling with Horikoshi’s writing. I mean, in the absolutely most hopeful interpretation of his writing we may see that flower thing as a parallel
4) of something the Joker canonically did for Harley and hence a hint of not seeing Endeavour as redeemable but not being the time for his comeuppance since right now their world really needs effective heroes whether they are good people or not… but that wouldn’t have been such an issue if he hadn’t written Endeavour to be as consistently useful at law enforcement as he did. I very much do not feel like dismissing the Doylist readings of complex subjects, that just facilitates the propagation of
5) harmful messages, but I believe that complementing those readings with Watsonian ones can help us more fully tackle said subjects and avoid detrimental “moralizing”. We understand the world through stories, which is why fostering empathy for fictional characters is still used to teach empathy for certain groups. And like you’ve said, at least on the West victims who haven’t ‘fought hard enough’ get thrown under the bus (Cinderella being a great example of a fictional case) so to me
6) encouraging others to see things through the victims’ eyes in fiction too is important even when the author won’t. TL;DR: please do go off on any author that punches down instead of up but why miss out on appropriating representation for those who are down while we are at it?
i’ll say in advance that i know it’s hard to submit long responses through an askbox, so if any of the things i’m focusing on below were just a result of the character limit/poor wording/misinterpreting, then please do let me know and send a follow-up.
there’s one major thing that i think we have to get out of the way first:
i don’t think it’s fair to characterize natsuo (or any other person who refuses to forgive their abuser) as placing healing in the hands of their abuser. being angry and resentful towards the person who abused you is not predicating your healing on that person’s future actions; it’s claiming your emotions and experiences which your abuser has no control over, it’s setting boundaries for what you will accept from that person, and on what terms you will interact. it’s saying “if you don’t get better, then you will not have my love or support” and that’s totally fine! no one is owed our love, thus it isn’t hurting us not to give it to someone who doesn’t deserve it.
i’m not gonna lie, phrasing a survivor’s choice of dealing with their trauma as placing agency in the hands of their abuser bothers me a lot. it also sounds a lot like the things people say when manipulating a survivor into forgiveness, like: “you can only control your actions, so why don’t you forgive them for your own sake instead of waiting around for them to become better people?? :)” not that you’re trying to manipulate anyone, anon, but wording like that can be easily misconstrued and i would be mindful of it in the future.
now, for the rest of your ask: again, i fully believe it’s your right (and everyone else’s) to headcanon rei and fuyumi however you want to fulfill a satisfying watsonian reading for yourselves. the problem with watsonian readings, however, is that they’re all down to interpretation. you may say that fuyumi wants to reconcile for many complicated reasons, while another reader might say she’s just forgiven her abuser, plain and simple. it’s even more open to different interpretations than doylist readings, so why would i just pick one of them to incorporate into my analysis? how would i choose it? what would my biased choice lend to my meta?
i’m also not sure why you say sticking to a purely doylist reading would be ‘moralizing.’ a doylist reading places nothing on the characters themselves—it’s about using narrative cues to figure out what the author intends to convey, and in this particular case, it’s about criticizing the way horikoshi wrote the pro hero arc based on the way he framed the actions of the tdrks’ abuser and the perspective from which he decided to tell the story, all of which only add depth to the abuser’s character. there is no evidence to argue that this arc was meant, canonically, to condemn that character—in fact, all the evidence points to the contrary—and i disagree with the idea that our criticism targeted at the author and at the narrative must be filtered through a watsonian perspective. unless you believe that people adhering to a doylist critique of the tdrks’ narrative is somehow promoting a lack of sympathy towards rei and fuyumi, then what purpose does it serve except for doing hori’s work for him?
there’s a time and a place to discuss headcanons, and for me, within my metas isn’t it. most of them are geared towards a specific message that analyze the narrative at an authorial/doylist level, for instance “this is why hori is so damn shitty at writing abuse.” they’re not about “hori’s shitty and i’m correcting him with these headcanons based on this canon evidence and these real life examples.” if you want to do the latter, then by all means, be my guest! it’s just not a task i’m interested in undertaking, and, again, i don’t believe they’re necessary for message i intend to convey, and i don’t believe it’s actively harmful to survivors to exclude watsonian explanations.
i think it’s fine to feel sympathetic towards rei and fuyumi. i encourage it! i also understand if there are people who don’t want to get involved with them because they’re badly written and because hori uses them as his abuse apologism mouthpiece. it’s very dispiriting, and people are allowed to not interact with messages they feel are dispiriting or harmful.
i think it’s fine for fans to write rei and fuyumi however they please. they can write them as avenging furies or they can write them as complicated abuse survivors with conflicting desires. as i said in the post you’re referencing, i understand that fans themselves are coming from a complicated place, and i sympathize with that.
i think it’s simultaneously important for fans to remember real abuse victims, who don’t always make perfect choices, and who already get a lot of flak from society regarding what they do and don’t do. we must extend our sympathy to these real survivors, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have complicated and negative feelings about the ways fictional survivors are written.
lastly, i want to say quite simply, if you want to encourage people to sympathize with abuse survivors, there are better works than bnha. there are creators who work their commentary about abuse into the text itself instead of making fans invent an interpretation to convince other fans. i think it’s far more straightforward and a better overall experience for someone to read or watch a piece of media that intends to have a statement on abuse than to be left to flounder in the mess that bnha is.

top 20 favorite quirks
okay, but listen, though! it’s exactly what it says in the title. not best quirks, or most useful quirks, or most creative quirks. not even coolest quirks! I did try to take all of these things into consideration when choosing, but honestly? by far the most important factor was, “I JUST THINK THEY’RE NEAT.”
anyway but let me backtrack and post the actual ask.
you’ll note that at no point was I asked to pick twenty of them. I did that all on my own. so here is my list!
20. Solid Air (Tsuburaba)
Tsubaraba Kousei. all-time undefeated grand champion of The Floor Is Lava. or at least he was until Ochako came along. anyway, so this is an extremely nifty quirk with all sorts of utility ranging from defense to helping him get around. it’s super useful for catching bad guys, and apparently the only real limit is his lung capacity. this quirk has so much potential and I love it.
19. Copy (Monoma)
the fact that he can copy his opponents’ powers and use them against them is badass enough, but add in the fact that he can hold up to 3 (or 4??) of them at once -- for as long as ten minutes -- and this quirk starts getting seriously powerful. anyway so one thing you might note as you read on is that although Copy is on my favorite quirks list, AFO is not! and that’s because Monoma’s limits actually make the quirk much more interesting to me, because they force him (and Horikoshi) to get creative. this is a really fun quirk and I would love to see more of Monoma in action. about time we saw him fight some actual villains and not just class 1-A, honestly.
18. Brainwashing (Shinsou)
as with Monoma’s quirk, what really sets this apart from other mind-control superpowers (to me, anyway) is the fact that it has limitations. he can’t just control anyone at random; in order to take them over he has to get them to respond to him somehow. which leads to innovations like the voice-changer, and which as a result has made his battles so genuinely interesting and fun to watch. anyway so I really want Shinsou to hurry up and join 2-A, and for them to just give him his provisional license all “here you go, son” with no testing whatsoever, because we’re past the point of pretending the HPSC is actually responsible these days, and because I really want to see if he can help turn the tides the next time the heroes battle the League.
17. Zero Gravity (Ochako)
I feel like it’s worth noting that I don’t really have any kind of fear of heights or falling or anything like that. and so I can’t really explain why Toga using this quirk on Ms. Curious and her lackeys was hands down one of the most singularly disturbing scenes in the entire manga for me! but it was!! even now I’m wincing just thinking about it. she just lifted them all up and DROPPED THEM and they just FELL and DIED. just like that. holy fucking shit. anyway, so we should all be very grateful that Ochako is super kind and sweet and more inclined towards helping people rather than murdering them. because holy shit. anyways though this quirk is dope.
16. Erasure (Aizawa)
I once said that this quirk was “not very cinematic”, and I don’t think I’ve ever been so wrong about anything in my life. oh, past me. you truly underestimated the dramatic impact of someone with a terrifyingly powerful quirk going in for the kill, only to be all “NANI?!” as they suddenly realize that their powers are no longer working, and the camera pans over to a man with gorgeous floating hair and intense red anime eyes. I owe you an apology, Erasure. you are cinematic AF.
15. Black Hole (Thirteen)
I really wish we got to see Thirteen fight more often. they suffer from the same “too powerful” curse as so many of the other characters and it’s a shame. anyway so Black Hole is cool af and gives me a ton of Miroku/kazaana vibes, which I freaking love. this quirk is lowkey on a Tomura-level of destructive potential, honestly, and yet no one ever talks about it?? Thirteen could literally destroy anything they touched if they wanted to?? imagine if they ever Awakened, you guys. holy shit.
14. Tape (Sero)
this power is so fucking stupid and ridiculous and completely absurd and I LOVE IT. Horikoshi really drew a skinny guy with tape elbows and was all, “so this kid is basically Spider-Man but with tape. I have not put the least bit of logical thought or creative effort into this power beyond that, and I’m not going to, either.” and somehow we all just accepted it. anyway, dubious origins aside, it’s such a versatile ability and Sero has such amazing control over it. it’s offense; it’s defense; he can use it to set traps; he can use it for maneuverability. TAPE ELBOWS CAN DO IT ALL.
13. Outburst (Ms. Joke)
when will it finally be her time. Outburst is one of those powers that sounds super dumb at first, until you really stop and think what the ability to make someone laugh at will could actually DO to people. true uncontrollable belly laughter is a totally incapacitating thing. she’d have people collapsing to the ground and practically seizing up. and good luck using your own quirk to fight back when you’re doubled over struggling to breathe and can’t even see straight because of the tears in your eyes. that’s assuming any of her opponents are even capable of thinking straight long enough to try it. like, this is such a straight up brutal ability and the fact that we have still NEVER SEEN IT is honestly infuriating.
12. Glamour (Camie)
it’s an illusion quirk. of course I have to put it on my list. illusion powers make every battle approximately 100x more entertaining. and what makes this particular power even better is that in any other series, this quirk would have been given to some Tokoyami-esque super serious emo kid. but BnHA went and gave it to Karen from Mean Girls instead. what a fucking power move. goddamn.
11. Black (Kuroiro)
according to BnHA Ultra Analysis, Kuroiro’s Appearing Out of Nowhere skills are rated a 4 out of 6. I still haven’t figured out if this is meant to be a burn on him or not. this kid can ninja in and out of literally any dark object in existence. if it’s nighttime, that means he can basically move wherever he wants to at will. of course he’s skilled at Appearing Out of Nowhere. so tell me then, why is it ONLY a four out of six?? how could he possibly fuck this up?? who was grading him?? DOES HE JUST SUCK. I don’t know, but anyway it’s really funny to me and also I really love this quirk.
10. Transform (Toga)
Toga went and Awakened herself right into the top ten with the reveal that not only can she mimic other people’s appearances, but that while she is transformed, she can actually use their quirks. like excuse me, what?? holy shit??? it is honestly driving me crazy that we’ve only seen this in action once. Transform is basically Plot Twist: The Quirk. I really want to see Toga use it to its full potential and infiltrate U.A. and/or spy on the HPSC and/or murder someone with their loved one’s own quirk. I WANT HER TO GIVE SOMEONE THE MAES HUGHES TREATMENT. I want her to do something so shocking that people ragequit the fucking manga lol. I know I’m always saying the manga isn’t that dark, but this is honestly the one exception where I would freaking love for it to get dark as shit. anyway so yeah. if you want to fuck with people you really couldn’t ask for a better quirk.
9. Creation (Momo)
MACGUYVER: THE QUIRK. an unlimited inventory in the hands of someone brilliant enough to actually utilize it to its full extent. what’s not to love? honestly if it were me with this quirk it would be completely useless. not only would I get hopelessly bored two seconds into trying to memorize an object’s molecular structure or whatever, but even if I DID manage to figure out how to make stuff, I would never know what to do with the stuff, or when to use it. every time a new situation cropped up I would just create a bunch of random objects in a panic. but Momo is so elegant in her problem-solving that she often needs to create only one or two things to come up with the perfect solution for something. basically this is a good quirk that becomes a truly great quirk when placed in the hands of the best possible person in the world to wield it. the quirk is awesome because Momo is awesome, and I fucking adore quirks like that (see: next entry).
8. Permeation (Mirio)
ah, Mirio. the original victim of the “too powerful to be allowed” curse. remember that time he BEAT HALF OF CLASS 1-A IN UNDER SIX SECONDS, you guys. small wonder Horikoshi couldn’t even make it through one complete villain fight with him before he had to de-quirk the poor kid. anyway, so Mirio makes this quirk look so mind-blowingly awesome that it’s easy to forget what a terrifying and fucked-up power it is in reality. “yeah it makes me blind and deaf and if I’m not careful I’ll fall into the center of the earth or splice myself in two or some shit.” what the actual fuck Mirio. but because he’s worked so hard and because Nighteye trained him so well, he’s mastered the timing to such an insane degree that he could kick Overhaul in the face without harming a single hair on Eri’s body. and honestly, there’s no way I could not love a quirk that gave us a moment like that.
7. Warp Gate (Kurogiri)
unlike SOME OTHER PEOPLE whose names start with Kuro, I would bet you that Kurogiri’s Appearing Out of Nowhere skills are a full six out of six! alas, the top ten of this list is chock full of people whose quirks are so badass that they had to be written out of the story one way or another. with Kuro at large there was technically nothing stopping the villains from just dropping in on U.A. one night to kill All Might, or rekidnap Bakugou, or whatever else they might want to do. and that’s actually a really scary thought though lol so it’s no wonder that Horikoshi was all, “yeah I’ll just have them capture him now.” anyways do you guys remember that one time in chapter 18 when Kuro used Warp Gate to create an endless loop of All Might suplexing Noumu suplexing All Might?? fucking quirks, though. wild.
6. Fiber Master (Best Jeanist)
another badass quirk, another badass quirk-user incapacitated and taken out of the story before their time. Best Jeanist is honestly terrifying. if he wanted to he could immobilize and even strangle and kill pretty much anyone in the world, whenever he fucking felt like it. that alone would be crazy enough, but then add to that that this quirk for all intents and purposes is basically telekinesis. as long as someone is wearing clothing he can move them around however he wants, as we saw in Kamino. basically, everything Hawks can do with Fierce Wings, Jeanist can probably do with his own quirk. AND THAT INCLUDES FLYING, YOU GUYS. the more I think about it the more I think we truly were robbed. I need Jeanist to come back already and fly everyone at Jakku to safety and tie Tomura to a chair with his own cape before proceeding to style his hair.
5. Rewind (Eri)
IT’S MY LIST!! I CAN PUT WHATEVER I WANT, AND IF YOU SAY I CAN’T, I’M TELLING MOM. okay but listen. everyone always rags on this quirk and how stupidly powerful it is, and look, I get it. but isn’t it kind of interesting that everyone is also always speculating over who Eri is eventually going to heal with her quirk? like, fandom is always complaining about how broken it is but at the same time they’re out here hatching all of these wild theories that center around it. and to me that indicates that in truth, this is actually an awesome quirk -- just so long as it’s used right. obviously there have to be some major limitations or else this is just “Fix Everything: The Quirk.” thankfully, Horikoshi did limit it! it’s super dangerous, she has trouble controlling it, and most importantly, it’s ridiculously slow to recharge and so she can only use it once every few months. it’s basically Recovery Girl’s quirk with a bonus slow-replenishing stamina bar that, once charged, allows her to release one ultra-powerful SUPER HEAL special move. and that’s pretty awesome. basically I think this quirk gets too much hate and not enough credit for the additional menu options it adds to the story. it’s interesting and compelling and I can’t wait to see what Horikoshi does with it.
4. Dark Shadow (Tokoyami)
TOKOYAMI WHY IS YOUR QUIRK SENTIENT. Existential Crisis: The Quirk. do quirks have souls?? if you shot Tokoyami with a quirk-be-gone bullet would Dark Shadow fucking die??? if Tomura absorbed Tokoyami’s quirk would Dark Shadow grow out of his back and be all “hey um, who the fuck are you”?? and would Toko’s head turn back into a normal human boy head?? would Dark Shadow look like Tomura instead of a bird shadow?? what even IS Dark Shadow, actually?? obviously it is not just a shadow because shadows can’t punch people or shield people from attacks or pick people up and fly them around. but yet he’s afraid of fire and grows weaker in daylight?? is Tokoyami secretly the strongest character in the entire series?? is there any way I can possibly justify putting this quirk all the way down at #4 instead of #1 where it clearly belongs?? let me answer that question by not answering it and moving on.
3. Explosion (Bakugou)
is the fix in?? is “exploding hands” really a better quirk than a fucking sentient monster man who lives in your belly button and reads your mind and is made of ~darkness energy~ and is your best friend? apparently the answer is yes! to both of those questions. yes the fix is in. I love Kacchan and his quirk is fucking awesome okay. it just never ceases to amaze me how this one single quirk, which really only does one thing, is nonetheless so spectacularly powerful that it allows Bakugou to compete on the same level as the fucking protagonist with all of his godlike super-strength and Main Character Powers and wacky SIXQUIRKS!! shenanigans. in my opinion the coolest thing about Explosion isn’t even its firepower; it’s the way Bakugou’s adapted it to fly around and to boost his speed. I think he legit may be the fastest character in the series right now, or close to it. he’s faster than Iida and Gran Torino and Endeavor. he can keep up with Deku without breaking a sweat. and he knows how to use that speed, thanks to his insane reflexes. add in the fact that this is also without a doubt the most cinematic quirk in the entire series, and I think I’m justified in putting it this high up. and anyway I still put two others up above it so shh.
2. Search (Ragdoll/Tomura)
Hey, What’s That Guy’s Deal: The Quirk. I just really love this one you guys. it’s so fucking useful. Video Game HUD: The Quirk. one hundred people at a time?? locations and weak points?? works even when you’re not looking at the person anymore and have blinked your eyes, unlike CERTAIN OTHER PEOPLE’S weak-ass quirks?? check, check, and check. is it any wonder AFO wanted this? plus it just looks so damn cool. the visual representation of everyone as little stars on a map. Turn On Location: The Quirk. okay look I feel like I’m doing a bad job of explaining why I have this quirk all the way up at number two. it just has this subtle badassness to it, and its introduction after almost two hundred chapters of buildup was just so fucking cool. maybe it’s recency bias?? I don’t even know; all I know is that I love this quirk and want to see more of it in action.
1. Blackwhip (Lariat/Deku)
listen, I was obsessed with this quirk back when it was called “Venom” and was by far the absolute coolest part of the 1990s Spider-Man cartoon series. I’m not just going to suddenly not be obsessed with it just because fandom is mad that Horikoshi gave Deku an additional power beyond just Smashing Stuff. Blackwhip is hands down the coolest quirk, guys. I’m sorry, it just is. it has the coolest name. it had the coolest entrance. it does basically anything you could ever want a quirk to do in battle. it grabs stuff. it Bloops. what more do you want. you’re all just jealous because you wish that you could Bloop too. I know I am. I wish I had a Bloop. anyway so yeah, Blackwhip is the upgrade to Deku’s fighting style that we desperately needed after 200+ chapters of Delaware Smashes and Broken Bones. all his fights are cooler now. he can save more people! he can fight without instantly dying! plus you just gotta love powers that occasionally explode out of control if their user gets all emotional and pissed off about the fact that you insulted his boyfriend. so yeah. Blackwhip at number one! on this list of favorite quirks. not best quirks!! jesus christ. please don’t kill me I have a family.
so that’s my list! all 3000 words of it. how does this keep happening.
