The Wayhaven Chronicles - Update 13/October/2023

I finally got to write the opening I’ve been waiting soooo long to write! And I LOVE IT! I’m more of a writer that likes to get right into the action at the start, and this certainly accomplishes that!

It’s actually a kind of opening I haven’t used yet in Wayhaven, so that made it doubly exciting!

Weirdly, I did something very simple that also helped more than expected this week; I changed the font of the plan. It’s way clearer for me to read now compared to Cailbri or whatever the standard one is. Possibly because it is such big blocks of text, my eyes were struggling to go between screen and paper and find where I was but using the new font definitely has helped with that issue.

So yeah, I worked on the opening this week because I couldn’t resist, hehe, and I’ll go back to the ‘housekeeping/cleaning’ coding next week. Hopefully that’ll help keep me pushing through the coding stuff if I get to enjoy the writing at the same time :D Not my usual flow, but it’s working so far!

It’s kind of hard to talk about it without spoiling it, as we’re now back into the point where I’ve really got to keep my mouth shut so things stay as a surprise…though you know how bad I am at that, lol! But at least I can go back to the weekly sneak peeks in updates on Patreon (and the first BIG sneak peek for the That Bit Extra post this month)! That should help me get through a bit until the first demo releases!

I’m actually taking a break this weekend, so I won’t be working on the Book One edits, but I’ll be getting back to those the weekend afterwards. Really pleased with how that is coming along—slow but sure, lol. It’s nothing major, but a lot of small things I really think help make it flow more to match the style of my later writing.

the basic gist of it: it’s set in 2023, a year after hunter’s disappearance. with no leads thus far and their friend group having become strained, luz decides to take a job offered to her by philip, who says he wants to help. she hopes that a night shift job in the last place hunter was seen will give her time to investigate on her own and help her find some clue as to what happened. and, hopefully, that’ll lead her to finding hunter and finally bringing him home. nothing goes as planned obviously

and here’s some random bits of info under the cut!⬇️

• hunter has a specially made fredbear plushie that plays pre-recorded voice messages when the paw is squeezed. he talks to it a lot when he’s younger, but distances from it when he moves in with philip

• luz’s favorite animatronic is freddy, he reminds her of her dad. her second favorite is foxy

• all the main animatronics are still in the story — freddy, bonnie, chica, foxy, and at one point fredbear & spring bonnie as well (those 2 were removed following the MCI/closure of the diner, and were not brought back when it re-opened). the puppet also has a role, but it looks and acts a bit different from how it does in the games

• its a crossover between toh and fnaf, but it doesnt follow the exact plot 1:1 from either media. its a mix of what i like about both and then some other things i added because i thought it would be fun or made the story work better :D

• the characters with the most development/importance in the au so far are hunter, luz, collector, and belos

• all the palismen are in the au as pets!

• here’s one of the first sketches i did for hunter’s current au design. him being a wolf was one of the very first things i knew i wanted for the au even back in 2022 when it took place during security breach era !! in the oldest version he was a blonde wolf animatronic in the pizzaplex lol. i think his name was something like wittebane wolf???? idk i couldn’t make it work😭

• the diner was opened by philip and caleb in 1999. philip deals more with the business side of things and caleb with entertainment. they both have a hand in the animatronic’s creations

• on the name of the au — halcyon is defined as “denoting a period of time in the past that was idyllically happy and peaceful”. this comes up ….. a lot in the au, and the desire for that “better” point in time influences the way the characters think & their actions throughout the story for better or worse!

and that is all i got right now! that isn’t like. “spoilers” for the au anyway lol

Clashing Worlds: The Visitor

I want to thank everyone and T.T for everything, after my speedpaint post I will take a break from Tumblr to focus on my own stuff and help out my family. A lot has happened during this month and I nearly fell into a depressive state (or I think it was) during the early weeks of this month (June), yet and I don’t know how, I’m still standing here lol

I’ll still respond to DMs if y’all want to chat or if you have Discord, you are free to ask me for a friend request so we can chat there. (In all honesty, I do like using Discord a bit more.)

I won’t share what happened with Twisted Tower’s account, I do feel like it’s not my business to share stuff like this. All I do ask is you continue spreading love and compassion, that’s all I’m asking. For everyone.

Out of your favorite designs you’ve redrawn or has drawn who do you enjoyed working on the most?

As a character designer myself, I can’t help but love all my ocs equally, and learning from you actually helps me expand upon my stories. You’ve helped me so much writing a story for Victoria (She’s a princess vampire who is generations after Dracula (Temporary name because some details are being worked on) in my universe I don’t think this made sense but hopefully it does?) and I actually took some inspiration from your video in order to fully develop her.

I also love it when you diversity your work. It makes me really happy seeing all sorts of characters with real life details? If that made any sense. I like learning from you and I wanna try to understand more about details. Mainly because I suck at drawing details and idk how you do most of your stuff by hand. (I usually try to find brushes on IbisPaint on Pinterest for my work)

What kind of advice do you have for any upcoming artists who’s struggling with character designing?

Do you start with the character and then work on the story or is it the other way around?

This is going to be a VERY long response so it’s all gonna be under the cut…

I don’t really have a favorite design honestly... It’s hard to pick favorites when your characters have different aesthetics to them. It feels unfair to me to compare them because of that LOL so I try my best to avoid that.

That being said though, I can definitely say I had so much fun redesigning Elliot and making her her own person rather than a character who’s meant to represent me. She doesn’t have a full body render yet but… I think she’s neat :3

She’s just got all the things I love in one design and since she’s so personal to me, I guess you could technically say she’s my current favorite design out of all my OCs so far. Minus Rei, of course…

But yeah I can definitely relate to loving all your characters equally!! Victoria sounds cool and I’m glad my content helps you out ^_^

As for the last few questions… Details are really hard to draw especially if your art style is more on the cartoony side. There’s nothing wrong with using brushes or patterns online to help out the process but if you want to practice without them, it’s good to try out how to simplify details!!

Not everything has to be crazy complicated. So long as you get the general idea or silhouette of something in your art, it translates pretty well in the end results. Lots of artists simplify things to make it easier for the eye and it’s a hard skill to master but as you get used to it, you’ll become way better at it. Try and be fluid with your line work. That’ll help a ton!!

For advice on character design: I’d say the most important part to designing a character is making them feel alive by having meaning to their physical appearance and attire. A lot of beginner artists tend to forget that which results in a boring or un-relatable character.

We all have some sort of history with our appearances and it’s good to try and figure that out with your OCs. I usually do that during the design process but it’s fine if you do it after or before it. Before it is more ideal in a professional setting though!!

Go insane with designs. Mix and match aesthetics if you want and use LOTS of references and inspiration. That’s the second most important part. It’s why I have tons of pins saved on Pinterest and tons of reels saved on Instagram. But remember to always ask yourself questions like:

Would this character dress like this? What do they think about their clothes? Do they dress traditional, medieval, or modern?

Would they like this sort of thing? What sorts of fabrics and textures do they prefer to feel on their skin? Are they comfortable with revealing attire or do they prefer something more formal?

What sort of history does their clothes have? Was it a gift from someone, did they buy it from a thrift store or did they make it themself?

Do their accessories have sentimentality or are they completely irrelevant and something they use just for aesthetics?

Is there a way to incorporate things from their backstory or their current story to their appearance? Like scars/marks on their body? Maybe even accessories from a loved one or no?

Can you explain why they have specific physical features? Why are they skinny? Or muscular? Do they work out and eat healthy or do they barely take care of themselves?

It’s a lot to consider but when you can answer these questions, your character becomes much more lively and unique.

I personally tend to start the design of the character first but as I go through the drawing process, that’s when I flesh things out like their story and such. I don’t recommend this process to beginners since it’s SUPER messy but do what makes you feel comfortable! Hope this was helpful and thank you once again for the sweet compliments <33

[oc’s: Eido, Ben]

Eido the shy ghost and Ben. E. Banshee. Names pretty self explanatory, other characters in the comic that’ll be introduced soon. They’re really fun to draw. Ben’s colors still need some tweaking but I wanted to share it anyway.

I’ve also gotten some help with editing for the dialog to fix some things up. Idk when the comic will be out yet tho, hopefully soon. I’ve been having fun with this little project for practicing comics. You’ll be able to see the progress over time 💀 cause the first few pages look a bit weird compared to rest lol.

Oh my god I need to draw artfights now 🏃 I’ve been so distracted with this stuff
