hello darlings!

just a quick note re. Starlight's posting schedule - I'm going to be in and out of hospital a lot, so we might be in for an erratic few weeks where I'm not keeping up with a new chapter every monday (I'll probably say as much in my next A/N, but just thought I'd post here too).

im still chipping away at things, but i doubt i'll have a chapter out today unfortunately 😭💔 with any luck, things will all be back on track soon! 😊

Thinking about taking a break for like a week or two even though it will ultimately be more stressful cause I am significantly stressed out about other things in my life ( mostly driving. Almost exclusively driving. )

Like I have the first week of updates for the next mini arc ready and I'm nearly finished the the next page ( and its only 3 pages ) but jfc there's so much going on suddenly and it all kinda hit me rn. Conveniently the night before the start of my work week haha.

its a lot of miniscule silly things but unfortunately thinking about them all at once is making my brain explode a little ;-;

I don't WANT to take a break, especially because once I try to start again I probably won't be able to. I find it very difficult to stop when I have a set routine and then just...not work on something. Which is why some of the Kid Leo arcs in the past have had HUGE lapses in posting :/ I also feel significantly guilty when I take breaks cause I know I don't do as well after I take a break lmao. Breaks usually don't benefit me, which is why I don't take them like ever.

The next three weeks are like...gonna be super busy on the weekends and super stressful driving wise. Like I'm talking long long trips of me having to drive. And then the week after the long trip I am gonna be boothing at a local convention which is always stressful. And I still have to make things for it.

I don't know, I'll decide sometime tomorrow if I wanna go ahead and commit to posting the mini arcs or not. I do plan on taking a significant break after Chapter 12, but that's still a bit away and this is more of an 'emergency break' type situation. Even though its not an emergency. You get the idea.

I don't wanna say for sure if I'm going to take a break cause hey, maybe I'll wake up tomorrow and be like ' man those silicone fumes made me feel like the world was ending lmao' and I'll be fine but it's very much a ' we shall see' type situation. I'll still draft up the posts in case I do wanna post, but this is somewhat of a warning. I'll announce if I really am gonna take a break or not later. I'll probably still be posting regardless, but it won't be full updates or anything like that. Probably just sketches and maybe pics of the stuff I'm cooking up for this convention :)

Anyway TLDR: I MIGHT be taking a break. Hard to say right now.

Hey thanks for being like the most patient people ever? I am fr just existing in workplace hell BUT I now have a new tablet so I can quit one of my jobs and take on comms again (after finishing the queue of people who accepted that they would be waiting however long until i could afford another) and that will give me time to like.. actually exist and create again

I will be working on the transitional chapter into Kamino Ward Arc but I definitely have changed in my writing style a bit over the break so if it feels different uhhhhh thats just what episodic hobby writing be like lmfao

and someone responded to my post like updating me on slimecicles whereabouts. and this is not a diss towards them because i love when people talk to me always. but i also want to prove my point because i love to prove my point

a jrwi patreon update came out today (!!!!!!!!!!) about the riptide hiatus (which im sure all the jrwi fans on tumblr are seething about) (<== saw a post that was salty about the riptide hiatus) (<== <== again no offense to them theyre so warranted for that but still). and they talked about charlie like a LOT? i dont like calling him charlie that feels too personal. they talked about slimecicle like A LOT?

BUT TO MY POINT: WHAT THE HELL HAS HE BEEN DOING???????????? i follow him on instagram and in the last few months hes gone to TWO concerts and visited tednivison and jschlatt and gone to a con where he participated in a panel (about mining). hes making music and painting miniatures. dogwater shading tips !!! + drawinfs

Use colored shading! using a color for shading makes a drawing look better usually, since it gives it more life in a sense. if depends on the mood you want for the drawing though, so if you're going for dreary, black shading can be used well

Know where/what your light source is. this is real important because it dictates where the shadows go in the first place! Once you decide where it is, try to imagine seeing your drawing from that angle. anywhere you cant see will be shaded! you can tweak this method as you please, I find it best to use it as a starting point and then do my own thing after that

Intensity of the shadow is directly affected by the intensity of the light! If your light source is a normal lamp or normal sunlight, your shadows wont be as intense, dark, and sharp. they'll be smoother and lighter than the most intense ones. but if your light is something more intense like a flashlight, the shadows will be sharper and darker.

I have a lotta good examples of this in my bakugou drawin I made a bit ago, so here he is:

1. colored shadows -- I used reds and some purples almost for the shadows to add to the mood and all that. I did this by first adding a more detailed shading layer, going in and putting color 'under' the hair and neck, and I'll get to why when I get to #2. I gave this layer the darker color filter on ibis paint x. then, I went in with a larger shading area to add more dramatic affect, by taking the same reddish color and adding it everywhere that wasn't getting the most intense lighting from the explosion.

2. since the explosion was the light source, everything centered around it. The detailed shading went under the hair and neck because those places are almost always dark. Then, I looked to see where was the farthest from the explosion and threw in a bunch of dark colors there as well!

3. Because the light of the explosion was so strong, I made the shadows vibrant dark colors as well! heres some examples of softer shading:

softer shading usually comes up more for me, but my more recent pieces have been very intense lighting.

for soft shading, I pick where the light comes from, and then I add the shadows with a watercolor brush. I usually pick different shadow colors for the different colors for soft shading, but they all have to be the same relative vibrancy for it to make sense mosta the time. I keep stuff thats under other stuff the darkest, like the neck or under sleeves, and blend the color out softly until it just kinda fades. usually you dont need too much shadows for casual lighting.
