My parents took us to all kinds of natural wonders when we were kids. One park, Callaway Gardens, was a frequent stop in my Georgia childhood. They had magnolia trees to scale, squirrels to chase, a lake to swim in, and--best of all--a giant butterfly garden. A huge glass room filled to the brim with monarch butterflies, eating sweet bananas and fluttering overhead like magic. I have patchy memories of interpretive signage and guides telling us about these sharply bedecked orange-and-black creatures: I learned about aposematic signaling from their bright colors, as well as Batesian mimicry--they tasted so bad to birds, that other butterflies mimicked them in appearance to gain the defense. Once when one landed on my hand to "lick" off some errant soda I'd spilled earlier, it was like a kiss from a wild thing--and I resolved to repeat the spill whenever I came back.⠀ ⠀ Their erratic orange magic continued outside the glass building--at home, at school, wandering through meadows at church, fluttering through my mother's garden. Monarchs, everywhere, all over the place, common as clouds. They were a constant presence in my Southern childhood. ⠀ ⠀ When I see one now, it is with the nostalgic delight of meeting an old friend--tempered by a sorrow I can't quite put into words. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, monarchs have declined in my part of the world by more than 80% in the last two decades. This tracks with my anecdotal observations of seeing them less and less often over the years, even though I spend much of my time outside--alignment between the big and small pictures. It seems that my whole life everyone has been rushing me;  telling me to grow up as if there might not be enough time, as if I might be a child for too long and the world will cease to exist. Now that I'm considered an "adult" I honestly don't understand what the rush was. I have a job, I'm going to school and I'm taking on more responsibilities in a world designed for "adults." Growing up is hard but once you make it to the top it can be the most depressing thing to realize this is IT. All your childhood has been rushed to get you to this one spot. This time in your life when you're finally all "grown up."

        First post. Saying just one thing. If there is one thing I will ask you to do. That thing is don't doubt what can happen in the future. But, the future is a vague term, so to narrow it down. Don't doubt 2015. Sure 2014 might have sucked, or been great, either or. You have no idea what 2015 will hold, it could be the year you meet the love of your life, or become randomly famous, whatever happens. It will be better than the year before. You'll have new experiences, meet new people, maybe reunite with old ones, whatever the case. Don't doubt 2015, and above all, live to see it.

I hope you have a wonderful year, really you deserve nothing but the best. Stay strong I know things get tough and it seems like the world is against you but don't loose faith life is what you make of it go do something fantastic go out and make a great name for yourself, and be happy. Life's a game made for everyone you just need to play it right and win. If at first you don't succeed try again, never stop trying to get what you want. I see how much fucking potential you have don't let that go to waste.
