oh that’s awesome!! I have a shit sense of smell so I usually dry up a ton of lavender and leave it around my room,, I never thought of using plants to ward off evil spirits though. I usually stick with symbols of protection, but plants seem really cool too! Im definitely researching that tomorrow :D And mint bushes are real pretty! They remind me of butterfly bushes,,

Woah I just read what happened and stuff, that was really intense! I hope you’re feeling better! (And that I’m not making things worse by bringing it up again)

Whenever I’m feeling bad and stuff I like to pick some flowers and make them into stickers! Dandelions are coming into bloom again so I’ve been making those :D it’s really easy and fun! First you gotta pick your flowers and cut them so that they’re as flat as possible,, or don’t! If you don’t they tend to be a little more funky and unpredictable which is pretty fun. Then you gotta get a book to place them in, I try to get them in as soon as possible so that the color stays way longer! Make sure to keep them separate or else they’ll fuse together and you’ll get a big amalgamation of flowers. If you’re impatient like me, stomp on the book until they’re flat! Or just press them normally that too. Then grab some wax paper and some packing tape. It’s real simple, you just put the packing tape on the wax paper, then put down your flowers, and then some packing tape over them :D and viola or something you got some stickers 👍👍👍 they last a really long time too! I’ve had some for about 3 years now and they still haven’t lost their color!

Also dandelions are very awesome plants,, pretty much every part of them is edible and they’re fucking everywhere lmao. You're not making things worse!

I pick flowers and dry bushels of them to make the van smell nice. My favourite is Prostanthera species, aka Mintbushes. Another one is Emu Bush, which is a traditional medicine and supposed to ward off evil spirits so I keep it around the van as well (I burned my last bushel before I dropped off my van in Sydney).

Sometimes I use my heavier books (mostly old zoology/botany/medicine books) to press flowers but I've never tried making stickers of them so I'll give it a burl! There's some California poppies up on the property so I'll try it with those!

My parents took us to all kinds of natural wonders when we were kids. One park, Callaway Gardens, was a frequent stop in my Georgia childhood. They had magnolia trees to scale, squirrels to chase, a lake to swim in, and--best of all--a giant butterfly garden. A huge glass room filled to the brim with monarch butterflies, eating sweet bananas and fluttering overhead like magic. I have patchy memories of interpretive signage and guides telling us about these sharply bedecked orange-and-black creatures: I learned about aposematic signaling from their bright colors, as well as Batesian mimicry--they tasted so bad to birds, that other butterflies mimicked them in appearance to gain the defense. Once when one landed on my hand to "lick" off some errant soda I'd spilled earlier, it was like a kiss from a wild thing--and I resolved to repeat the spill whenever I came back.⠀ ⠀ Their erratic orange magic continued outside the glass building--at home, at school, wandering through meadows at church, fluttering through my mother's garden. Monarchs, everywhere, all over the place, common as clouds. They were a constant presence in my Southern childhood. ⠀ ⠀ When I see one now, it is with the nostalgic delight of meeting an old friend--tempered by a sorrow I can't quite put into words. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, monarchs have declined in my part of the world by more than 80% in the last two decades. This tracks with my anecdotal observations of seeing them less and less often over the years, even though I spend much of my time outside--alignment between the big and small pictures. This Buddleja crispa (Himalayan butterfly bush) has be trained as a wall shrub and before the felty, grey-green leaves emerge the peeling bark trunk makes a great sculptural feature. In summer the new shoots will bear racemes of small, pale lavender flowers, with a white eye.
