The Making of: Holidate
Honestly, Holidate was such a random addition to The Christmas in Hogsmeade series.
First there was The Perfect Tree, for me to unload all of my Perceville feels. Then, because that fic had background Snarry, I couldn't quite resist writing the Snarry side of the story in The Christmas Prince.
By then I was so swept up in the holiday spirit, and this little universe, I couldn't leave it alone! At that point, I went looking for more to add.
This fic is...a mess. It's a mess. I love it. It was fun. But it's a mess.
First: two ships?? Dron and Ginsy??
In The Christmas Prince, Harry and Snape get together during a matchmaking event that Harry dragged Ron and Hermione along to. Looking back, maybe I should have done Dron and Ginmione. Hmm. Oh well! I can't resist those Gryffindor/Slytherin couples could I? Besides, green and red are Christmas colors!
I wanted to try my hand at Fake Dating, only I wanted it to be proper fake dating. The twist is: the fake couple doesn't fall in love! The best way around that: have 2 gays be each other's beards. And the best way to get Draco and Ron to hook up this way...is by having Draco date his sister. Of course. That's how all of the great romances start.
But I wasn't done with tropes, oh no! I also have a great love for "breaking up and making up" so that's where Ginsy came in. I did need a reason for these two to agree to this dumb plan (besides all the alcohol.)
So we have:
Matchmaking
Fake Dating
Getting Together
Breaking Up and Making Up
Enemies to Lovers
Gay Besties
And because I was already showcasing different types of relationships, I decided to go the mile with squeezing in a bunch of background relationships. (I.e. that scene at the Burrow.) That was wholly self-indulgent. This whole series was self-indulgent, but that specific scene and those details were EXTRA icing on the cake. As in: the cake is buried in icing now. Are we sure there's cake under there? Pretty sure.
I went even further into the silliness. I had an excuse for fancy parties (Malfoys) and homey holiday fun (Weasleys.) But more than that: community events! C'mon. Hogsmeade definitely goes the mile for Christmas.
That bit was inspired by a movie called Christmas on the Bayou. My Bestie and I have a tradition of hate-watching Hallmark holiday movies and texting each other the whole time. It's a wholesome little tradition. The film takes place in Louisiana (where I'm from.) (It actually opens with zydeco music; I had a nice big laugh about that one.) ("Christmas on the Bayou...is this in Louisiana?...Ah yes. Zydeco. The sound of my people.") Anyway, there was much Christmas to-do in it and there was a Christmas tree maze!!!! I had to include that in my fic. I had to!!!!
So while the first two fics in the series were proper romances, Holidate was a last ditch effort to cram in as much holiday fun as I could. It's silly. I am, at times, a bit embarrassed by it. But why should I be? I had a blast with it. Some people enjoyed it. That's what matters, right?
Looking back, that's when I started to backslide into bad writerly feels. When my high expectations of myself returned, when I began putting more pressure on myself.
There was no meaningful story for me to tell here. But did it have to be? The fact that it was fun to write and that it entertained people is good enough.

Christmas with the Karasuno Boys (HC’s)!!
Part 1: Daichi, Suga, Asahi, Nishinoya, Tanaka, & Ennoshita
Part 2 (Kageyama, Hinata, Tsukishima, Yamaguchi, Kinoshita, & Narita) here!!
A/n: Tumblr said my word count was too much so I’m splitting this bad boi up into two parts :p Enjoy!!
*****
Daichi
A huge romantic during Christmas, 10/10 quality cliche times spent together
You wanna go ice skating? Hell yeah sweetheart, he will make it the most beautifully romantic thing you’ve ever seen
Like straight out of a holiday postcard type beat
Istg the rink he takes you to looks like a more heartwarming version of Rockefeller Center
He’s a big keeper of tradition when it comes to making plans, but doesn’t mind a bit of nonsense fun when everything falls into place
Which is why you love to bring the team along on adventures because they make everything all the more entertaining
At first he’s confused like ??? You don’t have to do that just if they’ve been pestering you about it
But then he realizes you care as much about them as he does (hint: a hell of a lot) and they’re thus invited along for some stuff
Of course y’all also get some quality time together on dates with just you both
Anyways you and Daichi have talked a lot about traveling and how he was really interested in seeing new places
So as his gift you got him a carved map with a roll of red string and thumbtacks, so that he could plan out all the places he wanted to visit
You know how when Kiyoko found the “Fly” banner for Karasuno and all the boys cried?
Yeah
Like that but with lots more hugging and laughing
“You know you’re gonna have to help with mapping this out, right?”
“Is that an invitation I hear?”
“Oh, that’s a promise”
FJSFJDSK ALEXA PLAY AMERICAN BOY BY ESTELLE—
Please I love him; he is so damn sly and sassy I will die with this headcanon
Sugawara
I swear on everything that Christmas with him is equivalent to a Hallmark movie
It smells like joy and warmth wherever he is, and this season only amplifies it
He is such a cheeseball without even having to try
But it’s in the really endearing and heart-melting way,,, just MMM PERFECT
He’ll take you on a walk through those neighborhoods with those crazy light decorations in the front yard and buy you hot chocolate
If he sees a group of little kids gaping at all the lights, he’ll leave them starry-eyed with stories of magic, reindeer, Santa and so-forth
“You know, I’ve heard that Rudolph’s nose is supposed to be brighter than the world’s most powerful Christmas light”
Good heavens, children absolutely adore this man
Anyways he’ll make it a little game as y’all walk around this beautifully lit neighborhood, both of you with a different assortment of bingo squares printed on paper
First one to bingo chooses a movie to watch after getting back to Suga’s house
Will wrap a big fluffy blanket around you both and pull you into his chest while watching the movie
For his gift, you got a star named after him
It’s because y’all alway go stargazing for dates every month, just to sit out, talk and cuddle
Suga gave you the SOFTEST look after opening your gift and this cute little card you made 🥺
“Lets go try to find my new favorite star”
PLEASE HE IS SO SWEET
“Right now? Koushi it’s 11:30 pm”
“Just for ten minutes, and then I’ll get you home”
So y’all spend the rest of Christmas Eve on his roof, sipping warm tea and attempting to locate Star Suga
Asahi
Cuddle bear alert ‼️‼️
It’s basically hibernation time for him, because he’s not the biggest fan of cold
That’s alright with you though 😌 more coziness for you
Lots of quality moments indoors means more creative dates
A whole day devoted to chill present wrapping? Hell fuckin’ yeah
Nice music, pretty wrapping paper, shiny bows, maybe a little Christmas rom-com playing in the back — the whole shebang
You find out pretty quickly that despite how it sounds, it’s actually quite a satisfying and enjoyable pastime
Practically had to drag him out of your living room to secretly wrap his own gift
As much as he’s the king of timidity and soft™, he can be very playfully stubborn when he’s comfortable, hence why he was such an ass to get out of the room
I have no doubt that Asahi would melt for the most adorable, cheesy shit
So you not only bought him some really reliable headbands for volleyball use, but you also made a little coupon booklet
He can basically cash in paper promises for certain things, like getting to choose the next date idea, picking a movie to watch without any objection, having you make his favorite food, etc.
There’s one that he can exchange for a full out spa day trip, because good heavens he’s a sucker for those
Massage and exfoliation and everything — it makes him feel ✨refreshed✨
He was ecstatic fam, I don’t even know what to say
Like a puppy who just got a bunch of toys and a new backyard to play
Mans cashes in one almost immediately, and at first you’re confused
Like it’s Christmas time bubs, what are we gonna be able to do when most places are closed and it’s the holidays?
Then you read the paper
“Free hug (can be used and renewed <3)”
GIVE HIM HIS DAMN HUGS RIGHT NOW
He uses that one a lot throughout the upcoming days, to the point where he just keeps the paper on him for fun
“You realize you can just ask me silly, you don’t need to keep carrying the coupon around”
“Yeah, but it’s entertaining”
Cute little cheeky bastard
Nishinoya
LOVES LOVES LOVES CHRISTMAS
You know the 12 Days of Christmas? The song??
He gets you a small present EVERY DAY for all 12 days
Not to mention he has a big present that he saves for the actual holiday
Y’all are the type of couple to get ice cream in the middle of winter
Nishi loves his cold snacks any time of year, and you’ve thus picked up a similar taste
He will consistently pester you about what kind of present you got him
Gets pouty when you don’t tell him, but in the back of his mind he’s glad because it would ruin the surprise
Anything you get him instantly becomes his most prized gift tho
It could be a literal rock with googly eyes and he’d put it in a protective glass case for preservation
But of course you get him something better than that because he only deserves the best
He’s got this specific assortment of products to maintain his spiky hair and to make sure it’s healthy, but they’re pretty expensive to buy when he runs out
When he tore open your present’s decorative wrapping to discover a huge basket of basically every hair product he ever needed, he got wide-eyed
There was also a booklet of little notes you’d kept throughout the month that listed all the little things you noticed and adored about your precious boyfriend
He nearly CRIED reading them
“Baby, you didn’t have to do all that for me”
“You act like you don’t deserve all of it and more, Nishi”
Refuses to leave your side after that
Holding your hand, hugging you as tight as he can, etc.
He is head over heels idc idc
Tanaka
Another man who is obsessed with the holiday season and everything that comes with it
He is the biggest sap for this shit istg
Will spend hours trying to get you the best present of all time
And he succeeds exceptionally
Mistletoe? He’s got an ABUNDANCE on hand at any time, just to make sure he can get fair share of his kissies 🥰
His signature beanie appears in full force during winter
Sometimes you’ll pull it over his eyes before giving him a peck on the cheek and dashing off in the school halls
“I’ll see you after school, babe!”
Speech = jumbled + incomprehensible
“Uh hUh, you do that~”
He’s: adorable
I just know that he melts for really sweet and thought-out gifts
Like anything you give him he’ll adore, don’t get me wrong, but the ones done with special care and love are just his kryptonite
He brought you into a massive bear hug and spun you around when he opened a photo book of old pictures taken together, complete with lots of cute messages and anecdotes written alongside them
You and Saeko may have also gone in on another present for him without his knowledge
And on Christmas Eve, you dragged a curious Tanaka into his front yard to the sight of a shiny motorbike
It was Saeko’s old one that she’d held onto for a while, and an old schoolmate offered to fix it up nice in time for the holiday at a discount, so y’all decided to divvy up the lowered price and got it done for Ryu
Sweet boy was taken aback, with his hands clapped over his mouth and everything
Saeko patted him on the back as he stood there in shock, giving her baby brother a sweet smile
“All yours, little bro!”
Ya, Saeko fucking loves you 😌 and so does Tanaka
Overall very lovely, would cry to be loved by the Tanaka siblings
Ennoshita
After spending past Decembers with his fellow second year classmates (namely, the very enthusiastic Noya and Tanaka), he’s grown to know quite a bit about the different holiday events that go on around town
Still, Ennoshita is a pretty simplistic guy and is content with simply spending time with you
So when you recommended going to pick a Christmas tree out for your place together, he’s totally down
As long as he gets to help decorate too ☺️
Y’all end up picking a beauty of a tree ngl
It’s SO TALL
And a super stronk friend — fit for the most heavy duty of ornaments
It takes some damn work to get that bad boi inside and upright after driving back to your house
But like hell did that stop you
Now that it was all set up, sturdy, and given plenty of water, decorations were brought into the equation that same night
No rest until it’s all set up and looking mighty beautiful
Okay maybe some coffee breaks in between, but other than that the grind don’t stop ✋😤
Ennoshita is an expert at making Christmas trees look absolutely immaculate
Idk if it’s because he’s had to deal with cleaning up disorder for a while now?
Looking at you, ya second year loons
He just has the touch, fam
He’ll of course let you have input on which light colors, what type of ornaments, and so on
But honestly it’s really fun seeing him fully concentrated on making your tree the best it can be
He lets you on his shoulders to put on the tree topper 🥺
For his gift, Ennoshita really loves books, so you decided to get him 12 different (hardcover!!) stories — one for each month in a year
Along with a small sticky-note blurb on the covers of each to explain why you chose it, and to give similar title recommendations if he ends up enjoying
He was so surprised with how thoughtful and extensive it was
Loved it so much that he immediately started to read the first one, with you sat in his lap
“Chikara, you realize you’re meant to start this one in January?”
“Shh, I’m getting a head start”

In This Together Part 3
 Pairing- Dean x Wife!Reader
Word count- 5821
Summary-Find out what these two have been up to for the last year. What obstacles are thrown at these two now?
Warnings- Possible sick reader, hospital/doctors, little language, little angst, fluff, implied smut, talk of possible infertility, pregnancy.
A/N-This is the third part of my first fic.  It started as a oneshot but turned into more.  The first part of this story was written, because I needed someone like Dean at the time. This miniseries I guess you can call it, is very personal to me.  I’ve lived a majority of the first two parts. If you’ve read it you can see why I wanted someone like Dean to lean on.  In this part I wanted to give the reader something I don’t know if I’ll ever have. Thank you for reading! Pictures found on google.
Tumblr media
Part 1     Part 2
 11 months later August 2021
Slowly opening your eyes back up, you were staring out the window of your fourth-floor hospital room. This time your window looked over the street below, every time you were on this floor you had a different view. Dean was still sitting in the bed next to you, you leaned your head on his shoulder as you thought back on the last year and everything that had happened.
October 2020 came around and your doctor let you go off your birth control.  He knew you and Dean were trying, or more not trying to stop anything from happening.  You knew nothing would happen right away and didn’t want to get your hopes up, you were also trying to stay positive that nothing was going to go wrong with you again. You were due a win.
You had been back to work for about four months now, there were still some things you were trying to get used to at the new store.  Because of the two surgeries you could wear down easily and were mostly five days a week trying to get up to six. You had already rearranged the office and some of the shelves in the kitchen area to make it more efficient, but some of your employees kept moving things on you so you had to redo them. It would take a good year for your foot to be back to normal which was February, but it would never be pain free. As long as it was better than before you were happy.
Halloween was coming close and Sam and Jess invited you over to their house again.  Since you and Dean didn’t have any other plans you decided to join them along with Dean’s parents.  Jake’s costume this year was an adorably fierce lion.
Tumblr media
With things still crazy in the world and covid still around there weren’t many trick or treaters. Unfortunately, this meant more candy for Dean.  Being a Saturday night Dean didn’t have to work the next morning. and you went in later on Sundays, so you stayed for a while.  After Jake went to bed the guys turned on the, All Saint’s Day, movies Dean loves.  They weren’t exactly your favorite so at least he could try and drag Sam into his madness this way.  Dean was enjoying his brother being a bit more into Halloween now that he had Jake around.   You bid them goodnight just before midnight and took your sugar high husband home, he wouldn’t be sleeping for a while.
Thanksgiving was late again this year, so your parents had decided like last year to do their Christmas party the week before Thanksgiving again. Even though you were working less this year you somehow got distracted and got to planning late.  This meant the first two and half weeks of the month would be filled with baking.  The nice thing about the store you took over was the regular oven it had so you could do some of it there.  Although first things first, you had to assemble your as baking list.  The night after Halloween you were sitting on the couch with the Hallmark Channel playing its Countdown to Christmas. Computer in front of you with Pinterest pulled up.  Dean walked in from the kitchen during a commercial.
“Hey Sweetheart, what are you up to?  Anything good on?”
“Nine Lives of Christmas, is on. I’m looking..”
“No, Seriously Y/N? It’s the day after Halloween, and you’re watching Christmas movies?”
You turned and glared at him. “One, I have been watching Christmas movies whenever you weren’t around for the last week.  Two, you like this one so hush.  The guy is a fireman, your missed profession. Three, I’m trying to get into the Christmas mindset to put together my baking list.”
“Oh great, it’s that time of the year again. What crazy ideas are you going to come up with this year, actually wait, let me grab a beer first.”
You laughed as he walked back to the kitchen.  Dean might give you a hard time with the Christmas crazy baking list you come up with, but you also know he very much enjoys the sweets you bake.  You two had been dating since your freshman year of college and he was always your official taste tester.  Although anything pie related was his favorite.
“I think I’m going to just do round sugar cookies again, while I was off after surgery, I watched a cookie decorating class that showed how to paint the frosting with food coloring and alcohol.”
“That sounds like a mess,” you threw a pillow at him. “I mean great Sweetheart, I’m sure they will be amazing.”
“Keep talking Winchester, see how big a hole you can dig.  Here’s a recipe for mini pie like cookies, I co”
“Yes!”
“..uld try. Okay, adding to the list      https://www.pinterest.com/pin/518406607102183606/
You were bound and determined one year you would get these cupcakes done; just not sure this year would be it. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/174584923040748115/
“How about Christmas Cheesecake Cookies?”  You showed Dean the picture and this time he glared you.   https://www.pinterest.com/pin/174584923040791076/
“Do you remember the red and green Krinkle Cookies you did last year?  Your hands were dyed red and green and so was everything you touched while rolling them.  I’m voting no more dyed cookie dough.”
“Fine spoilsport.”
“How about you put the computer away and come to bed with me.”
“You’re heading to bed already it’s only, oh.  Be right there Babe,” quickly shutting everything off you chased after your husband to the bedroom.
The party was a little smaller this year, some people still weren’t all for getting together with people yet.  It was mostly family and some close friends.  Honestly, you preferred it that way, less entertaining you and your mom had to do, and the more you could relax and enjoy the night.   The best part about having this early, was your baking was now done, you had even gotten Dean to get the decorations out and most of the house was done.  You enjoyed cuddling on the couch with the Christmas lights glowing around you.
Thanksgiving was once again split between both of your families.  You went to your dad’s mom for a late lunch and spent time with your family. Then headed over to John and Mary’s for well, for Dean dinner, you were still full, so you just picked at a few things.  After cleaning you ladies joined the guys in the living room where they were watching the game and supposed to be keeping an eye on Jake.  You and Jess talked sales you saw in the ads and tried to get gifts ideas out of Mary for her and John.  Like your mom, she wasn’t very helpful and just said you guys didn’t have to get them anything.  Usually you and your mom would hit a few stores tonight, but nothing was really open with everything going on.  The two of you had planned for the next day to get a few things before you both headed for work. It was nice to spend time with just your mom anyways.
Every year December seems to fly by, it was the second week now and you had been feeling a bit off, and more tired than usual.  According to Dean you had become a bit moody too. Which of course you snapped at him when he mentioned that. He’d been watching his step after that. One morning you were taking care of the dogs when you felt sick and had to run to the restroom.  You didn’t go into work that day, since you didn’t want to get anyone else sick, but felt fine as the day went on.  The next day at work you walked into the cooler and for some reason the dough smelled strong to you and you had to walk back out and get some fresh air.  You attributed it to yesterday’s stomachache.  Then the burping started again. Donna heard you at work and came over.
“What’s going on lady?”
“Something’s off, I haven’t been feeling well, I started throwing up and the burping restarted.”
“You know what you need to do right?”
“I know, but really Donna, can’t I catch a break.  I don’t know how Dean is going to take it if the doctor tells me there is another problem, I don’t know how I’m going to take it.”
“Okay, well before we send you into the operating room again, maybe you should see what the doctor has to say first.”
“That would be the logical thing to do, I prefer worst case scenario.”
That night when you got home from work you told Dean what was going on and when you called your doctor’s office, they actually had an opening on Friday and could get you in then. Dean was unable to go since Benny would be leaving that morning for a weeklong trip to see his wife’s family for an early Christmas.
The day of your appointment arrived, the nurse, Julie that took you back was your cousin’s friend who first introduced you to this doctor.  You two chatted on your way back to the room.  When you got to the room, she asked what was going on and when your last period was.  You explained your symptoms and how you were worried about another mass or fibroid. It had been over a month since your last, but you hadn’t been regular since your surgery and going off birth control. They took a blood and urine sample to send for tests before you saw the doctor.  The doctor pushed near your uterus to see if he could feel any bumps around there. He wanted you to get an ultrasound, so that was scheduled for Monday, your labs would be done then also.
It was a quiet weekend for you and Dean.  Monday rolled around and your appointment was that afternoon.  Dean was supposed to meet you at the hospital, where the doctor’s office was located, but was stuck in a meeting with a new supplier.  Since you were there for an ultrasound you were just supposed to see the tech who would do the test, but Julie was the one who came and got you.  She took you back to the ultrasound room.  When you were back, she told you the test results came back.  You left the doctor’s office in a bit of shock after scheduling your next appointment.  As you passed the mall on the way home you decided to make a quick stop.
That night during dinner Dean asked you what the doctor had to say.  When he called you after your appointment you said you were fine and would talk to him at home you didn’t want to discuss it over the phone.
“I’m going to need follow up appointments for the next few months, but everything is good.”
“If it’s good why do you need follow ups, what aren’t you telling me?”
You got up and went to get the package you picked up from the mall, handing it to Dean you sat back down.  He looked at you and back to the wrapped box.
“Open it.”
Ripping open the paper he looked at the open back and back to you.  “Wait, what?  Really?”
“Yes!”
Tumblr media
You told Dean what happened at your appointment.  The results came back, and you were pregnant. Because of your history though, the doctor still wanted an ultrasound just to make sure there wasn’t a fibroid or a mass there.  They didn’t find any problems; the tech could just make out the embryonic sac the baby would be growing in.  They figured you were around 5 weeks, and due around August 14th.  Dean jumped up and grabbed you in his arms, tears were gathering in his eyes, he was so happy.
Later that night you were laying with Dean on the couch and he was going through his phone.
“Hey, the baby is about the size of an apple seed right now.  An apple seed, that’s smaller than my fingernail!”
You looked over at his phone and saw he was going through baby sites.  “Yes, that is tiny.”
“I can’t wait to see them in the activity walker car, they are going to love it like Jake does.”
Tumblr media
“Dean, honey, you know we still have like 8 months till the baby is here, and then they aren’t going to be able to use that right away, right?”
“Yeah, well they still will one day.” He learned closer to your stomach, “right little on, can’t wait to play in the car walker daddy got you.”  You had tears in your eyes watching Dean talk to your baby, you had been so afraid this day would never come.
Wiping your eyes, “I thought you said you bought that for Jake?”  Knowing that was his excuse at the time, hoping one day it would by your child playing in it.
“Well, I, um,”
“It’s okay Dean, I get it.”
Sitting in the hospital bed you looked down at the little one in your arms, and still couldn’t believe how lucky you and Dean were to be here. Your mind went back to last year’s Holidays, and what happened after you found out you were pregnant.
The two of you debated on telling anyone about the baby yet, since it was early.  As excited as Dean was you didn’t know how long he could keep the secret.  You would only be seven weeks along at Christmas but decided to tell everyone Christmas Eve at your parents.  You were going to tell them like you told Dean.  You found some grandparent gifts for them to open. Since Sam had Jake it would be John and Mary’s second grandchild, but your parents first.
While playing games after dinner on Christmas Eve, you and Dean rigged a team game that had your parents all winning.  Handing each of them the gifts you picked up Dean grabbed the camera to record their reactions. It took a minute before it sank in, but everyone was so excited for you.  Mary and your mom rushed over to hug you while John and your dad congratulated Dean. The rest of the family joined in after the grandparents.
Tumblr media
“The baby is the size of a blueberry now.” Dean proudly told everyone.
The two of you decided to have a quiet New Year’s Eve in.  Your parents, Dean’s along with Sam, Jess, and Jake came over for dinner, and games. The guys ended up in the basement watching some competition, while you ladies were watching the New Year’s countdown and talking babies.  On a trip upstairs Dean heard the conversation and informed everyone that the baby was now raspberry sized.
You had your 11-week ultrasound the Friday before Dean’s birthday.  You scheduled it then because you thought it would be an early birthday treat for him getting to see the baby.  They were going to confirm your due date, and there was a chance you would be able to hear the baby’s heartbeat.  Dean looked over at you with a smile when you were walking up and threw his arm around your waist.
“What?”
“You’re starting to show, I can’t wait till I can feel him kick.”
“Remind me when this kid is playing soccer in me, how happy you are about it then.”
He put his arm around your waist as you walked. “Yeah, yeah, come on I can’t wait to see our little prune.”
“I can’t wait till next week, and we’re on a different food.”
Dean was so excited he could barely sit still in the office.  They called you back and got you settled in the room before the tech came back to start.  She started and was running the wand over your stomach when she found the baby and pointed him out to you.  Dean grabbed your hand.
“Wow, Sweetheart, that’s our little one.”
“Yeah.”  You both had tears in your eyes.
The tech turned on the volume so you could hear the heartbeat.  “There it is, wait a minute.” She was moving the wand again.
“What’s going on?” You worriedly asked.
“There’s another heartbeat.  Here, we have a shy one.”
Looking at the screen you saw another tiny dot.
“Wait, are you saying?”  You looked over at Dean and he was looking at the screen it hadn’t hit him yet.
“Congrats, you’re having twins!”
“Wwwhat?” Dean finally tuned into the conversation.
“Happy Birthday weekend dad, you’re getting two babies!” Dean’s look of shock wasn’t one you would be forgetting anytime soon.
Leaving the doctor’s office, you both were a mix of shock, nerves and excitement.  It was hard to tell which one was winning out right now.  You had the family over to the house for Dean’s birthday on Sunday and you let him share the news with everyone.  You also decided it was time to tell the rest of your friends.
Tumblr media
You moved your gaze from the tiny bundle in your arms to Dean staring down at the tiny swaddled baby in his.  Someone had Daddy completely wrapped around his finger.  Sensing you watching him he looked up with a smile on his face. “Sweetheart, I can’t believe our babies are finally here, I can actually hold them and see them when I talk.  You did so good,” he told you leaning over to kiss you.  Dean had been constantly talking to the babies and trying to feel them kick before they were born.  Ever since you got back to your room and the twins were brought in, he had one in his arms at all times, relishing in the fact he now could.
Dean wanted to go all out for Valentine’s Day this year.  He said it was the last one with just the two of you, and last year it had been a week after your first surgery, so you just stayed home.  Thankfully, you had a dress that had been fairly lose on you before, so you didn’t have to go find something new.  Dean had reservations at a nice restaurant in town, where you enjoyed each other’s company and the food.  You were beat by the end of dinner and headed home to cuddle on the couch.  Dean was rubbing your stomach and talking to the babies while you watched a movie, you were running your hand through his hair.
“How are my babies doing tonight? Did you enjoy the nice dinner I took your mommy to?  I can’t wait till I can meet you guys. A few more months, you have some growing to do.  You guys are 14 weeks, that means you’re as big as lemons now.  You would fit in the palm of my hand.”
The next month went by fairly quickly, both you and Dean busy with work.  There were things around the house that would need to be done to get ready for the birth of the twins.  It seemed like Dean was quickly lessoning what we would let you do without help so you wanted to get started soon before he had you completely sidelined. You had decided to turn your guest room into the nursery and move the spare bed into the office neither of you really used.  You cleaned out some of the lighter things because you knew Dean would freak out on you if you moved anything heavy.  One night you went through Pinterest looking for different ideas for the nursery before you rushed ahead with anything.
March 16th was your 6th wedding anniversary; you suggested a quiet night at home. Dean vetoed that since you stayed home last year, again because of you.  He booked you a weekend stay at a bed and breakfast a little over an hour away near the beach.  Being March, it was too cold to get in the water, but you spent time exploring the quaint little town and its cute shops. While you were walking the beach at sunset your first night you stopped to admire the view and Dean stood behind you wrapping his arms around your stomach.
“I love you so much, Sweetheart.”
“I love you too, Babe. Thank you for doing this.”
“You know I would do anything for you.”
“I know, you have always been so good to me, and you’re going to be such an amazing dad.  These babies are lucky to have you.”
“I love spending time just the two of us, but I can’t wait to meet these sweet potatoes.”
“Really Dean?”
“What that’s what the website says for 18 weeks.”
The rest of the weekend went very well, the highlight would have to be the last walk on the beach you and Dean took before you headed home. When you had stopped and were looking out over the water you felt a flutter in your stomach, and a few minutes later another faint one.  That’s when you realized it was the babies moving.  You told Dean and he kept moving his hand around to try and feel it too but was unable.  He was still excited because it meant he would be able to soon.
Easter was the first weekend in April, you split your time between your two families.  Sam and Jess hosted this year. While you and Mary kept Jake busy the guys hid Easter eggs around the yard for him to try and find. There were only about ten, but it still took him a little while. He was more interested in playing with the colorful plastic egg then finding the next one.  Dean stood beside you while Jess was helping Jake. His hand was on your stomach when he suddenly pulled it back.
“What was, wait was that?”
“Yeah, that was one of the babies kicking.”
“So awesome! I can’t wait till we are out there helping ours find eggs, take their first steps, holding them.”
“I think your order was a little backwards, but I know how you feel, Dean.”
You had a surprise to share with both of your families. A few days earlier you had gone for you third ultrasound. Since you already had the surprise of twins you decided to find out the genders.  While you were sitting around talking after dinner you let Dean tell his family, you had told your earlier in the day.  Jake was sitting in his lap when he started talking.
“Hey buddy, do you know how big your cousins are now?”  Jake didn’t understand and just looked at his uncle.  “They are the size of pomegranates.”
“Dean, Babe, he’s not even two yet, he doesn’t know what that is.”
“He’s Sam’s kid. Sam eats all kids of healthy shi.. stuff. I’m sure he has those around the house.”  Sam just shook his head and glared at his brother.
“Do you think you want a girl or boy cousin to play with?”
Mary was looking between the two of wondering if this conversation was going where she thought. Jake never answered Dean no matter what he did to try and pull something out of him.
“How about one of each, what do you think about that?”
“Is that one you’re having?”  Mary asked not being able to wait for any more of Dean’s game.
“Yep, we are having a boy and a girl.” Dean grinned proudly.
“Oh man,” Sam started, “a little girl is going to have you so wrapped around her finger.”  They all congratulated you and Dean once more.
It was the second weekend in May and you really needed to get going on finishing the nursery or starting it.  Who would have thought the hardest part was going to be picking a theme you and Dean could both agree on.
“Come on Y/N, what’s wrong with that idea?”
“Dean, I’m not letting your obsession with scaring your brother using clowns scar our children with a clown themed nursery. Not going to happen Winchester.”  The mobile and matching blanket he found even creeped you out a little.
Tumblr media
“How about race cars? No, I got it!  Let’s paint Baby on a wall!”
“Um, nice thought. We were trying to keep it neutral remember?  How about when they get older, and this little guy can appreciate cars almost as much as his daddy, you can do a car theme.  Who exactly is going to paint Baby, or did you suddenly become Picasso?”
“I didn’t get to who was going to paint it yet in my planning. Fine we can do cars down the road.  Where are your ideas?”
“You have already shot them down, you didn’t want to paint the chevron lines, the silver and blue was to girly.” You just shook your head and went back to looking.  This was going just as well as picking out names.
Dean looked over at what you had pulled up. “I like that color.”
“Seriously?”
“What, I can’t like that?”
“No, I was asking do you seriously like it, because I do too?”
“Well we like it, but how about my little rutabagas?”
“Really Dean?  Do you even know what that is?”  mumbling something he turned back to his phone; you wouldn’t be surprised if he was looking up rutabagas. On the plus side you finally had the nursery plans worked out.
Jess, Mary and your mom threw you a baby shower the first weekend in June you were about 30 weeks now.  They had the party at your parent’s house, this worked out nice for you since you lived closest to them and it would be easy to take things home.  Dean and the guys could hang out at your house since they didn’t want to attend the party the whole time.  Jake was almost 2 and very interested in the presents on the table. You all had to keep him from trying to climb up there.  It was a great couple hours playing games and spending time with family and friends. Babies Winchester were spoiled greatly!
Dean did come down toward the end, you’re pretty sure though he just wanted food.  You excitedly showed him the wonderful gifts people gave the babies and you.  He eagerly described the nursery, told people how fast the baby was growing, and how they were now as big as cucumbers.
Your birthday was a few weeks later, and at 32 weeks you weren’t up to doing much for it. Your families came over to the house for dinner.  Your parents and Mary had been around and helped with different projects in the nursery. John, Sam, Jess and your brother on the other hand hadn’t been over in a while, so they had not seen the nursey.  Dean was eager to show them all
“This is where my little squashes will sleep.”
Jess looked at Dean and laughed, “It’s cute that you think they are going to sleep Dean.”
The majority of the nursery was done now.  You had gone with the soft aqua color you both liked, along with white furniture and trim.  You had gone with light grey and white chevron curtains and pillows to accent it, along with soft grey carpet.
Tumblr media
The Winchester’s always did a big 4th of July BBQ, this year was no exception.  Ever since Sam and Jess got married you rotated hosting it between the three of you.  This year should have been yours and Deans’ but since you were 34 weeks along Mary graciously told you they would have it.  The doctor had told you to really start taking things easier, so you were trying not to overdo it.  Mary didn’t let you help much in getting ready for the party, but you did busy yourself in the kitchen at home making a few desserts and Dean’s favorite pasta salad. You were thankful for them taking over you hadn’t been getting much sleep and wouldn’t have had the energy to get everything done you would have wanted.
Tumblr media
Dean was manning the grill talking with Sam, Cass, and Benny when you walked over to join him.  You could hear him talking as you got closer.
“Right now they are about the size of butternut squash, although they could be slightly smaller cause it’s twins.”
“I could have sworn you called them squash a few weeks ago, or was that a nickname for them?” Sam asked his brother.
“A few weeks ago, they were squash, now they are butternut squash.”
“I wasn’t aware there were different squashes,” Benny added.
“You know Dean for someone with an aversion to vegetables I’m surprised by the number of them you have called your kids.” Sam teased his brother with a laugh.
“What will they be when they are born,” Cas asked.
“Babies, Cas, they will be babies.” Dean shook his head at his brother and friends catching sight of you waddling over.  “And there is my beautiful wife, and mom to be.”  Dean leaned down and gave you a kiss while his hand went to your stomach.
Night came and you were heading back to you seat next to Dean to watch the fireworks.  When the first ones lit up the sky you could feel both babies start to kick, apparently, they were as big of fans as their dad. Dean moved you around on the bench so he was sitting behind you and could have his arms around you. When he felt the babies kick, he moved his hands around and started talking to them calming them right down.  The last few weeks whenever they were really active at night Dean’s touch and voice were the only thing that would get them to settle down so you could get a little sleep.
They figured your due date was around August 14th, but since you were having twins, they would most likely be early. Because of your previous surgeries the doctor wanted you to have a C-section to avoid any issues.  It wasn’t what you really wanted, but it was what was best.  They scheduled that tentatively for Friday August 7th unless the babies had other plans.   Which they did.  You were laying on the couch Monday morning with some heat on your back to help with the pain you were having while Dean was getting ready for work. Just before Dean walked out you started to feel some cramping. You were fairly certain you were in labor now.  Dean actually took it much calmer than you thought he would. He called the doctor’s office while you went to shower and change.  When you came back, he had both you bag and the babies in the car, and called Benny to tell him he would need to handle the shop today.
Once you go to the hospital things were a bit of a blur. They checked you in, took you to a room to exam you and prep for surgery.  Dean disappeared at one point and came back dressed in scrubs.  Before you knew it, they were taking you back to the operating room Dean right beside you the whole time.
“It’s time to meet our pumpkins Sweetheart.”
You just looked over to him and laughed.
“It’s the last time I can say that.”
“I know Dean let’s go meet our pumpkins.”  Dean smiled widely at you as you headed down the hall.
Dean was holding your hand and trying to keep you calm when the doctor asked if he wanted to cut the umbilical cord.  He did and came back to standing next to you with tears in his eyes as he watched a nurse take your screaming son.  The doctor went back to work to get your little girl and Dean once again cut the cord. He was pushed out of the way quickly because she wasn’t breathing.  The nurse who brought your son over said that could happen with C-sections and she should be fine.  It seemed longer than the few minutes it really was before you and Dean heard her little cries fill up the room, both of you letting out a sigh of relief.
After recovering you were finally in your room with Dean and both of your babies.  Your families were here and waiting for your okay to come meet the newest members.  Dean proudly introducing the babies to the rest of the family.
“I would like you all to meet Patrick John and Sophia Allison.  You spent a few days in the hospital Dean right beside you the entire time.
After everyone left your little family alone Dean sat down next to you on the bed holding Sophia, while you held Patrick.  The two of you both lost in your own thoughts and the babies in your arms before you looked over to him drawing his attention to you.
Once you arrived home your mom and Mary took turns coming over to see if they could help you or just let you get some sleep.  Dean had to go back to the shop but tried to be home as much as possible.
The twins were two months old and not sleeping well through the night which was leaving you and Dean exhausted.  You were both working during the day, and the twins were waking each other up at night which had the two of you getting up each taking one of the babies.  You told Dean that you would get up and he could sleep, but he just kissed you as he walked by saying you were in this together no matter what.  One night you had finally got them calmed down early and both of you sank down on the couch.  Dean asked if you wanted to watch anything on TV.
“Honestly, I don’t think I could follow along on anything right now, but the back of my eye lids. How about we head to bed before the little monsters wake us up?”
“Knew I married a smart woman.”
Just as you settled into bed you heard Patrick start crying, and then Sophia joined in.
“Seriously.” Dean grumbled.
Tumblr media
As you were trying to calm both babies down Dean was playing on his phone.  All of a sudden you head Samuel L Jackson voice reading Go the Fuck to Sleep. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cb0t9TUNLpg
“Seriously Dean?”
“What?  They can’t understand and I completely agree with it.”
Much to your surprise the twins were starting to doze back off.  If this actually worked, you weren’t sure if Dean would let you hear the end of it.  This was the quickest they calmed down for you, and also the start of hearing this every night for the next four months.
Things weren’t always perfect, but they were perfect for you.  You had an incredible husband who always supported you and two wonderful kids who would keep you both on your toes.  No matter what happened good or bad you and Dean were in this together.
Thank you for reading!  For now this store is complete.

A Hallmark Secret
Day 4 of 2020′s 31 Days of Ficmas.  Thanks to @doctorroseprompts for the list!
Prompt: Holiday movies
Rating: G
Pairing: 12xRose AU; part of the Queen of Hearts universe
Summary: Even after seven months of marriage, Rose and Ian still have a lot to learn about each other.  A secret from Ian’s past brings back bad memories from Rose’s.
2020 31 Days of Ficmas masterlist  |  Queen of Hearts masterlist
AO3
---
Humming a vague Christmas tune to herself, Rose meandered her way through the palace hallways.  The decorations had started going up a few days earlier, and just that afternoon she’d overseen the last wreath being mounted in the ballroom, over the thrones.  The gigantic “official” tree in the foyer would have a ceremonial lighting ceremony the next evening, the one in the town square several days after, but the more reasonable-sized (but still large) one in their bedroom was already fully lit and decorated, giving the season a magical air none had had since she was a small child.
Without really planning it her feet followed her heart, and she ended up heading down the hallway where Ian’s public office was located.  She felt terrible for her poor husband; this was apparently a busy time of year, for nearly every night he’d have to return to work after dinner and an hour or so of relaxing with her.  She’d offered multiple times to help, to ease his burden, but he gently, kindly rebuffed her.
Approaching the door, she considered knocking – all she wanted was to help, to support him, considering how patient and supportive he’d been of her as she navigated her new life – and froze, as the distinctive peal of a woman’s laugh echoed through the door.
Oh, no.  Her heart dropped to her stomach, the previous decade vanishing and returning her to the stupid, prideful eighteen-year-old she’d been, so desperate to prove her mother (and Mickey) wrong that she’d put up with Jimmy Stone’s lying and cheating for longer than she cared to remember. No, no, no…
She stood frozen in the hallway, unable to make a decision – confront him, or run away?  I’m sure there’s a reasonable explanation, her optimistic side encouraged, but the sinking feeling in her gut disagreed.  We’ve been here before, and it never ended well.
But Ian’s not Jimmy or Mickey, the optimism countered.  Ian is different – Ian is better.  That’s why we’re married.
Decision made, Rose took a deep breath for courage before moving forward, pushing the door open. She gave it more force than necessary, but didn’t wince as it banged against the wall, too focused on Ian’s guilty expression.  He was alone in the room, his laptop newly shut in front of him, and her stomach turned as he just stared at her.
“I heard laughter,” she said stiffly, fighting back the urge to start accusing, or shrieking – neither would help her now, not with him.  Not that they’d ever worked before.  “Meeting going well?”
Another flash of guilt made her stomach turn, before his brow furrowed.  “Wait, do you think-”
“I don’t know what I think,” Rose cut him off, “except that you’ve been lying to me.”
He watched her with a curious expression, before looking down at his laptop and sighing.  “All right, come here.”
She did, moving stiffly as he opened the lid, stopping at his side and glaring at the screen.  The image was generic Christmas, a tall decorated tree lit up with colorful lights, the dark night sky behind it. Then he clicked the screen and the image came to life, panning down and around to focus on a couple standing next to it.
“I’m sorry I made you doubt me,” Ian started, pausing the video again and rolling his chair back to make room for her, tugging her down onto his lap; she didn’t resist, but didn’t relent either, perching on his knee with her arms crossed, feeling vaguely guilty and somewhat silly, though the fears beating through her brain were not subdued.  “How do I explain?  When I was studying at Johns Hopkins, I lived with Grace – we were more roommates with benefits than anything else, as you know.  Well, when we would be overwhelmed with work and school, she liked to watch these movies that had started airing – Hallmark?  It’s a… thing over in the States, and it’s only grown over the last twenty years, but these were the early days.  They were cheesy and predictable, but… mindless.  A distraction.  I grew to enjoy them as well, because they were light and hopeful, and I needed that.”
Rose arched an eyebrow. “Are you telling me all your ‘late meetings’ were just you, in here, watching… Christmas movies?”
He nodded.  “I thought… I’m sorry, but I thought you’d laugh. No one knows.  Well, Grace, and we’ll occasionally discuss them in there’s a particularly good one, but- I was embarrassed.  I didn’t want you to think less of me.”
As his words processed, Rose didn’t know whether to cry or laugh.  Sinking into him, she buried her face in his neck, hating his hesitation before tightening his arms around her waist.  Emotion bubbled up her chest, and they were both surprised when it erupted as laughter.  Clinging to him, she gasped for breath amongst her howls, all of her worry being expelled until love tinged with shame remained, and she calmed.
Eventually she sat upright again so she could see his face, smiling as she wiped at her eyes.  “To be clear,” she started, voice hoarse, “I’m not laughing at you watching Hallmark movies.  I’m laughing because how I’ve entertained myself while waiting for you is by watching the same sort of cheese on Netflix.  And in fact, I’ve watched so many of them that I’ve gone through all the non-royalty ones and have resorted to watching those against my better judgement.  And let me tell you, this whole suddenly a queen thing looks a lot easier in the movies.”
Ian laughed as well, expression lightening.  “Sounds like we still need to work on being open and honest with each other,” he said easily.  “Why don’t we go back to our bedroom, make a cuppa, put on some seasonal pajamas, and curl up and watch a movie together?”
“I would love that.” She kissed him, deep and lingering. “And then maybe we’ll go to bed early.”
“Deal.”
-
Once settled on the couch, movie queued on the screen in front of them, Ian allowed himself to relax. It had felt good, sharing this aspect of himself with her, and he was gratified to know that not only had she not made fun of him, but she actually enjoyed the same sort of guilty pleasure.
He couldn’t help but be a little hurt at her initial reaction though, her suspicion and veiled accusations, wondering what he’d done to have that be what she jumped to, rather than planning a surprise (which he was, to be fair).
“Ready?”  Rose flopped onto the couch before curling into him, one arm firmly wrapped around the large bowl of popcorn fresh from the microwave. “Let’s start, so we can call it a night.”
“Sure,” he agreed, hitting play on the remote as they snuggled together.
He tried to focus on the plot, but his thoughts kept running away from him, and by the time the leads had ‘re-met’ as more than passing characters, he was consumed with questions. Hitting pause, he struggled to sit up as Rose protested the change.
“Hey!”  Putting the bowl on the coffee table in front of her, she turned around.  “What’s wrong?”
Ian licked his lips, trying to marshal his thoughts into coherence.  “Can we talk?”
Expression faltering, she nodded, crossing her legs and facing him.  “I guess you wanna know why I sort of overreacted?”
“I wouldn’t have put it that way, but, yes.  I… didn’t realize we had, well, trust issues.”
“We don’t.”  She sighed, not sounding particularly convinced. “At least, we don’t, and it’s honestly got nothing to do with you.”
He kept silent, watching her.  She seemed to have something on her mind, something from her past, he suspected, and tried to keep his features arranged in an open and inviting manner.  The fireplace crackling was the only sound, the light from the flames making her seem to glow.
“When I was sixteen, I had this shitty boyfriend,” she said haltingly, staring down at her hands and twirling her ring.  “He was a musician who thought he’d make it big, so it was the usual story – I dropped out of school to support him, and he thanked me by getting drunk and being abusive. Verbally, mostly, but- well, mostly. He also cheated.  A lot.  In our- in my bed.  The one that I paid for.  Long story short I eventually went home with my tail tucked between my legs, and you know the rest of that, but…  And then Mickey- don’t tell Martha, he was different then- well, he wasn’t much more inclined to be exclusive, but he wasn’t cruel about it, and to be honest I kept one foot out the door the whole time anyway.  The point is-” she took a deep breath, placing her hand over his, “the point is those scars are deep.  I thought they’d healed- I put a lot of effort into it- but when I stood outside your door, just wanting to be with you and help you, worrying about how much more you’d been working lately- and I heard a woman laugh… it just brought it all back.  Like getting slammed with a rogue wave, just instant- and I know you’re not like that, and I do trust you, I just-”
“Old wounds pull,” he murmured, when it was clear she wouldn’t continue.  “Instinct.”
“Yeah.”  She gave him a soft, tentative smile.  “So, really, I’m sorry for coming on so strong.  I just… I love you so much, I couldn’t do that again. Be the fool again.”
For the first time the conversation made him angry, but not at her.  “You are not a fool,” he told her fiercely, bringing both hands up to cradle her face and make her meet his eye, so she could see the sincerity there. “You are wonderful, and smart, and talented, and brave.  I’m sorry I was a prat sneaking around, I didn’t mean to make you worry.  And I won’t do it again.  I absolutely forgive you, not that there’s anything to forgive.”
“Thanks.”  She sniffled.  “And I forgive you.”
They kissed, a warm, buttery meeting of lips, just a joyful expression of love and happiness.
“Now, what say you we finish this movie?” he asked, tucking her hair behind her ears and making her smile. “I want to share this with you.”
Rose bit her lip, looking between the screen and his face, before shrugging one shoulder.  “Dunno, are you sure we’ve made up enough?”
His brow furrowed, her smile morphing into a cheeky grin and she tilted her head in the direction of their bed.  Finally understanding her meaning, he laughed, reaching for the remote and shutting off the telly without a second thought.
“An excellent idea,” he stood, offering her his hands.  “I think I have some making up to you to do.”
“Well, if you insist.”
And just like that, a new holiday tradition was born.

Valentine’s Special
Tumblr media
Stray Kids Bang Chan x Reader
Genre: Fluff
Valentine’sDay!AU...?
A/N: woah you guys, two posts in a month, I feel accomplished. Anyways, happy valentine’s day! shout out to all my single ladies (and gentlemen and people) out there, love you, love yourself. Being single is cool. Being part of a relationship is cool, too. Have a great valentine’s day! I hope you like it!
“Oof,” I grunt, literally jumping onto my couch. Decked out in a sweatshirt 3 sizes too big for me, exercise tights and a beanie I haven’t washed for probably a good 2 months, I check out my surroundings.
Fried chicken? Check
Mint chocolate moose tracks? Check
Hallmark Channel on? Check
Box of chocolates on the table bought for me from me? Check
Work phone off (probably not the best idea but whatever)? Check
Two spoons? Check
I close my eyes, not really sad at all. I mean sure, some people think it sucks to be single on Valentine’s day, but then again, those are the people that aren’t single. They have to worry about doing all this stuff for their significant others, making sure they have presents, chocolates, flowers, whatever… Honestly though, it seems kinda burdensome. It’s nice not having to worry about all that as a single person. Besides, I have my best friend.
A sudden aggressive rapping of knuckles on the my front door interrupts the moment of calm I have before the commercial break ends on Hallmark Channel.
“__! Open the damn door, my hands are full!”
Rolling my eyes, I can’t help the smile that slips onto my lips. My neighbor and best friend for what seems like it’s been forever yells, also very aggressively, summoning me to aid his very urgent needs. I push myself off the couch and yell back.
“Hold your horses, Chan! Gimme time to climb out of this mountain of fried chicken and ice cream.”
“Hurry up, you slug! I swear, knowing you it’s going to be next year by the time you get to the door.”
“Don’t tempt me, boy.” The smile grows on my mouth. I don’t ever feel the need to have a significant other, because with a best friend like Bang Chan, I really don’t need one.
“__, do you want the snack foods I bought for you or not? I could just leave and share them with the other boys…”
“Okay, okay, I’m coming. Chill bro.” When it comes to food, I wouldn’t care if you were in a dark alley holding out some sketchy looking slime, food is my main motivation in life. Any threats saying you’d give my food to someone else and I will do anything so long as it means that that food is mine.
Hurrying my snail’s pace to the opening the door, I’m met with a cheeky grin decorating my best friend’s face.
“Happy Valentine’s Day, you single loser.”
I open the door wider for him to come inside, the smile on his face mirroring my own.
“Shut up, Chan, we both know you couldn’t get a girl for shit.”
He laughs, loud, boisterous, and lively, a beautiful, clear sound I know for sure I wouldn’t be able to live without.
“I’m hot and you know it.”
“Yeah, so is burnt noodles but they’re still ugly as fuck.”
As I’m shutting the door, Chan is still somehow able to shift all the bags of trashy and unhealthy food to clench his heart in mock hurt.
“I come here all the way from Seoul and you still treat me like trash? I’m hurt.”
I scoff, taking a bag.
“We’re still in Seoul, you twit. It only takes you like 10 minutes to get from the Entertainment building to my apartment by skateboard, 20-25 at the most walking.”
He chuckles lightly and sets the remaining bags down by the edge of the coffee table before collapsing on the couch. The second his head hits the cushions, he closes his eyes and lets out a long exhale. I start to feel guilty for making him wait at the door. He is a kpop idol afterall, and he works his ass off daily. I can only imagine how long he practiced today and what time he went to sleep this morning.
“Not my point, but true.”
Settling down beside my best friend, I open the bag, shuffling through the cheap food he got.
“Mmm… spicy beef ramyeon, chocolate, ace crackers, shrimp chips, sweet rice pies… did you get any hapi bing bing or choco pies?” I inquire, my eyes still on the food.
“Wha...?” I hear him say, mumbling through a half-sleeping mind. I smack his leg lightly to wake him up.
“Did you get any hapi bing bing?” This time, Chan manages to crack one eye open.
“No. I didn’t know what kind you wanted.”
“How about choco pies?” I set the bag down, looking over at him. He closes his eyes again, resting a forearm over his face and tosses another bag towards me.
“Should be in here.”
I’ve just opened and started to search the bag when my hand brushes against a familiar thin, rectangular box.
At that exact same moment, Chan’s eyes blink open in realization and he sits straight up, arms shooting out to grab the bag. I’m too quick though, and I pull out the well known box of chocolate Pepero sticks.
“Chan…” I squint at him, holding up the box. Never in the last 7 years has Chan gotten me a box of Pepero sticks. Tossing the box into his lap, I dig further into the bag and discover one, two, three more boxes of pepero sticks. White chocolate with cookie crumbles, strawberry, matcha…
He stares at me blankly, a pretty crimson pink quickly materializing on his cheeks.
“Uhm… Those were supposed to be a surprise.”
I laugh, placing the bag back onto the floor and cracking open a box.
“Why wait? You haven’t ever given me pepero sticks before. Something special happening today?” I ask, smirking. Though I’d never admit it verbally, I know very well that he’s attractive, as does my currently quickly beating heart.
From my peripheral vision, he gulps visibly, hands twitching slightly at his side.
“Ahh… I thought it’d - I don’t know - be fun to play the Pepero game today.”
I lean closer to my seatmate, trying to look as innocent as possible and pushing my lips into a duck face to tease the reddening boy beside me that’s doing everything in his power not to look me in the eye.
“Something you want to tell me, Chan?”
“No.” Without saying much of anything else, he grabs the box, opens the bag, and shoves a stick in my mouth.
“Don’t move and don’t bite down.” Looking up at the older boy in shock, there’s a spark of determination twinkling in his eyes. Taken aback by newfound courage in the what used to be the pink-faced shy boy beside me, I can’t really find it in me to mess around with him further.
Still as a statue, I watch, probably cross-eyed as he scoots closer and closer to the pepero stick poking out from between my teeth. It seems the closer he gets, the hotter my body temperature rises. My heartbeat is spiking drastically. My breathing is speeding up. My brain scoffs at me.
For someone who’s just fine being single, you’re sure getting nervous.
Finally, his mouth reaches the opposite end of the chocolate covered biscuit and his hand cautiously reaches towards me to cradle the back of my head. I can only stare as he nears me, his bites slow and careful. He gets closer and closer and his gaze fixes itself on me. For a moment, it seems time slows. My ringing heartbeat decelerates in my head and I’m holding my breath.
I’m frozen. One more bite and his lips brush mine, stuttering only for a second before fully enveloping them in a kiss.
I don’t know if it’s even possible, but I’m more frozen than before. Then, instantaneously, my body moves as if it has a mind of its own. My eyelids slide closed and my arms wrap themselves around my best friend’s lithe waist. I know I should pull away, I know I should stop myself, but his free arm slides me into his lap and his soft lips are plush and captivating.
Soon enough, he pulls away, breathing heavily. I’m left, still shocked, still breathless. The silence between us is deafening and I have absolutely no idea what’s going to happen next.
It’s Chan that breaks the silence with an awkward but welcome laugh.
“Is… Is there actually any of the pepero stick left?”
I immediately unfreeze as if that’s the magic phrase and laugh.
“I guess not.” Deciding that I don’t like sitting on his lap, rigid as an icicle, I lift his arm and relax into it.
All of a sudden, it’s him that’s gone stiff.
“Chan~” I whine. “It’s just me.”
“I know,” he all but whispers. “But I also happen to kinda like you.”
I giggle softly.
“So you did have something to tell me.”
He relaxes finally and hums,
“Yeah… I guess I did.”
“I kinda like you, too,” I mumble, subconsciously tracing random patterns on his taut stomach with my fingertip. His arms wrap themselves around me and he presses a kiss to the top of my head.
“That’s good. I’m glad.”
“Happy Valentine’s Day, Chan.”
“Happy Valentine’s Day, __, my favorite person in the whole world.”
I snuggle into my best friend and now significant other’s side, the hallmark movies and pepero sticks more or less forgotten.
“Wait… What was that you were saying about me not being able to get a girl for shit?”
“Shut up, Chan.”

Christmas Magic Brings Everyone Together
A/N: Day 21 of the 25 Days of BAU Christmas! A JJ x Reader where they like each other and end up spending the holidays together. JJ’s boys and the reader’s kids try and set them up. Note: I have JJ as a single mom (never met Will.)
“So you have any plans for Christmas?” JJ asked. “Now that he’s gone?”
Y/N’s face lit up. “We don’t have to worry about him, which means that we can have a nice Christmas morning opening presents, most of which were bought by my parents, because I spent all my money on lawyers, and then after that I’ll probably just watch TV with them. It’s gonna be great.”
JJ leaned in to her friend’s shoulder and sighed; she deserved the world and more. “That sounds great. You’ve been through enough.”
It had been a year since Y/N separated herself from her abusive asshole ex-husband. “Thanks, babe. What about you?”
“Well, we’ll be doing the same thing Christmas morning, and then probably just chilling around the house until we go to visit my parents for dinner.”
Y/N smiled as Henry, Michael, Noah and Cassie all played together in the park. “I think we’re pretty lucky.”
Meanwhile, the kids were having a secret powwow near one of the trees. “So what are we going to do?” Henry asked.
Both Henry and Noah, being the older of the four children, noticed their mothers’ attraction for each other. Henry had never known his father, and Noah had unfortunately known his. But their mothers were single and they could tell they liked each other. “Ice skating,” Cassie said.
“What?”
“We should all go ice skating together. Then we can skate and we can stick them with each other.”
“Is it just me or does the 6-year-old kind of make sense?” Henry asked.
Noah patted his sister on the shoulder. “She kind of does. Maybe we can get them to agree to go ice skating on Christmas Day. We just need to keep pushing them together as much as possible and soon they’ll admit they like each other. I just know it.”
“Plus, it’s Christmastime. My aunt Penelope says people always admit their feelings during the holidays. Something about Christmas magic.”
All four children put their hands together in the center. “Let’s hope your Aunt is right, Henry.”
“Mom, what are we going to do in between opening presents and going to visit grandma and grandpa?”
JJ hadn’t really thought about it. The boys normally just sat around playing with their new toys while she sipped on a glass of wine and watched some crappy Hallmark Christmas movies. It was practically tradition, but she could see by the look in her eldest son’s eyes that he had something else in mind. “I’m not really sure. Do you have something you want to do?”
“Actually, yea,” he said. “Do you think we could go ice skating at that place downtown?”
“Are they even open on Christmas?”
“Yea, I already checked online. Can we go?”
JJ hadn’t been ice skating in years. That was going to comical. “Does Michael want to go to? Or is this just for you?”
Michael enthusiastically ran into the room. Sure, JJ thought to herself. He can’t hear me when I tell him he needs to clean up his room, but this he hears. “I wanna go too, Mommy. Please?”
It’s not like they were doing anything else in between. “Sure, but you have to help me up if I fall.”
“Okay,” Henry laughed.
As the boys turned away, pumping their fists in the air in victory, JJ wondered what on earth had made them want to go ice skating in the first place.
Y/N grunted as she felt a weight on top of her. “Mommy! Wake up!”
Five-year-old Cassie was sitting on top of her mother.
“Sorry, Mom,” Noah said. “I tried to keep her out in the kitchen so you could sleep a little later, but she was too excited. She had an idea.”
The tired mom slipped out of bed and into her slippers as she smiled at her 13 year old. “You’re too sweet, my boy. Thank you for trying. But it’s okay. I should get up anyway.”
She would be woken up at all hours of the day and night. It didn’t matter. All that mattered now was that she was away from their father. They were all safe and he was legally barred from getting within 500 feet. Christmas was coming. All was good. “What’s the idea that made you want to jump on me, little missy?” Cassie jumped into her arms and started going on about how she wanted to try ice skating for the first time.
Honestly, it wasn’t something she’d thought about before, because her ex had been so controlling - it hadn’t even been a thought. But they were free now, and she wanted to give the kids any experience they’d been denied as long as she physically could. “Noah, you’re okay with this too?”
“Yea,” he said softly, smirking in a way that his mother wasn’t familiar with. “I think it could be cool. There’s this place that’s open on Christmas. Could we go then?”
“Sure. You both have to promise not to laugh at me when I fall though.”
Noah chuckled under his breath. “I don’t know if I can do that.”
Once school was dismissed for break, the two families were too busy with last minute Christmas plans to get together, so the boys could only text each other to say that they’d gotten their mothers to agree to go ice skating. “I hope this works,” Noah said to Cassie as he finished reading her a story on Christmas Eve night. Occasionally, she had trouble sleeping; she’d have nightmares about their father, so even after their mother went to sleep, she’d still be awake. Noah would read her another story to help her go back to sleep.
“Me too,” Cassie replied, yawning as she pulled the blankets closer to her body. “I think Mommy should be happy.”
The next morning, all four children woke to presents under the tree, pancakes for JJ’s boys and waffles for Y/N’s babies, and the Walt Disney World Christmas parade playing softly in the background. “Mom!” Noah cried. “This is expensive. How did Santa afford this?” He asked, his eyes fluttering between his sister and his new iPod. He didn’t want to spoil that magical Christmas feeling for her just yet.
“I’ve been saving since last year,” Y/N whispered to her son. “It’s all I could afford for you. Everything else is from Nanny and Poppy, but I wanted to get you this.”
“Thanks, Mom,” he whispered.
Immediately after putting his new iPod on the charger, he came back to open a few extra gifts courtesy of his grandparents, while watching his sister explode with happiness at her own presents.
After nearly two hours and bellies full of pancakes, Noah, Cassie and Y/N headed out toward the ice skating rink. “You both ready to watch Mom fall on her butt?” Y/N asked.
“I’m looking forward to it,” Noah replied.
Across the rink, he saw Henry, Michael and their mother. “Look!” He said as casually as he could.
“Oh my god, I can’t believe they decided to come here too. That’s so funny,” Y/N said. JJ and the boys walked over toward Y/N, Cassie and Noah. The kids broke off into a group and left their mothers to embrace.
After saying how happy they were to see each other after a few days of craziness, Cassie came over. “Can you make sure my skates are tied?”
Y/N bent down and told her to wait for her to go on the ice. “I can take her, Mom,” Noah said. “I’ll make sure she doesn’t fall.” Cassie stood up and wobbled on her skates. “At least I’ll help her up when she does.”
“Okay,” Y/N laughed. “Just call to me if you need me?”
“I will.”
“Henry, you and Michael do the same!”
“Yes, Mom!”
The foursome made their way out onto the ice with much more grace than either mother had expected. JJ was nervous about skating, but seemed a natural once her blades hit the rink. However, Y/N was a little less gracious, nearly falling over the second she stepped into the circle. Thankfully, JJ was there to catch her. “I think you might have to help me,” Y/N laughed. “Considering my kids are too busy being pro-skaters.”
“I won’t let you fall,” she laughed. “And if you do, I promise to make sure you’re okay before giggling.”
“Fair deal,” Y/N replied with a smile. “So what brings you here on Christmas anyway?”
JJ maneuvered herself so that she was facing Y/N and skating backwards, slowly, but she was doing it. “It’s funny. Henry and Michael said they wanted to try. We’ve never gone before, so I figured why not. But it’s not what we normally do.”
“Same with Noah and Cassie,” Y/N said. “This wasn’t even a thought I could entertain when I was married. Obviously, it’s not my forte, but I want to give them whatever experiences I can. They’ve been denied enough.”
“Wait,” JJ said, turning around to see Henry and Noah snickering with each other. “Your kids asked you to come here? And my kids asked me to come here...”
“Do you think they did it on purpose?”
JJ smirked and turned back toward Y/N. “Yea, I do.”
Y/N blushed. Had her kids seen something in her she hadn’t voiced out loud? Over the course of the year, she’d started to develop some slight feelings for JJ, but she hadn’t thought to entertain them because she didn’t want to involve the kids in another relationship of hers so soon, but maybe...maybe they saw what she felt. “Why would they do that?” She asked. She should play it off. If JJ didn’t feel the same way at all, there was no reason in bringing things up.
“I...I think they are trying to push us together,” she said softly.
“You do?”
“Yea, Henry’s actually told me that I should ask you out. He thinks I like you.”
“D-Do you?”
JJ nodded. “I didn’t want to say anything because you’ve been through so much these last couple of years. I didn’t want to complicate things.”
As they slowly glided across the ice, Y/N took a sharp breath inward. “I kind of like too...I actually like you. I-I just wasn’t sure if I should get into another relationship of any kind because of the kids, but I think they set this up.” She turned around to look at her kids and saw them high-fiving each other. But when Noah caught her eye, he looked away abruptly. They’d been caught. “They definitely set this up.”
For a few moments, they said nothing to each other. Y/N just leaned into JJ to keep from falling. “Should we...I mean do you want to try seeing where this goes?” JJ asked hesitatingly. There was a hopefulness in her voice that made Y/N’s heart flutter. “We can take it as slow as you need,” she continued. “I don’t want to pressure you or the kids.”
“I’d like that,” Y/N said softly. They skidded back into the wall and stopped; that’s when Y/N leaned in and gently pressed her lips to JJ’s. Out of the corner of her eyes, she saw Noah and Henry pumping their fists. “And apparently they would too.” She said, smiling at their meddlesome children.
As the kids passed, JJ and Y/N embraced them. “You four are sneaky, especially you two,” JJ said.
“What?” Henry exclaimed, shrugging as they continued down the rink. “It’s Christmas!”

Pledge Night Over 60% of U.S. Senators went to fraternities. I have no idea if that's true but the movie makes a point to mention it a couple times and honestly I absolutely believe it since they both consist of egotistical power hungry sadists. Pledge Night is a late '80s slasher, so late in fact it's actually from 1990. Now while it certainly has a lot of the slasher hallmarks it eschews more traditional tropes in favor of adding a supernatural twist. It's much more in the vein of Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night 2 or Slumber Party Massacre 2. It also surprisingly takes it's time to build up its characters before disposing of them. It's almost 45 minutes before the first real kill happens and that time is devoted to the pledges at the fraternity and their hazing rituals which are pretty fucked up. It more than carries the first half of the film, seriously it would be an entertaining college frat sex comedy if, ya know, motherfuckers did not start getting disemboweled. The FX are pretty great, there's a variety of kills, some really creative, and often disgusting. The killer themself has a pretty cool melted/burnt face look plus they're basically a zombie rockstar that mutilates students while Anthrax plays on the soundtrack. Who doesn't like the sound of that? It does drop the ball in a couple places. The whole fraternity pledge/hazing is done with the purpose of forcing a bond through shared suffering with their pledge brothers. You would think that surviving a murderous demon rockstar would cause the very thing they came their with the intent of doing but no, they pretty much split up and all get picked off randomly. So much for the shared bonding experience. Also the end is completely lackluster. Anticlimactic is an understatement, the endings basically non-existent. It's still a hell of a lot of fun and honestly it makes me think maybe I missed out in college for not joining a fraternity... jk abso-fucking-lutely not, there's no way in hell you're gonna catch me eating any fruit that was in my butt. No sir, no way no how. https://www.instagram.com/p/CHqoSurl7NF/?igshid=fodkazhztaei

A Blog? Ew.
Hiiiiii. So, I’ve decided to start a blog. Because, why the fuck not? I honestly don’t care if my mom is the only person that reads this. I hate the word “blog” by the way. I hate the idea of a blog, so I’m just going to call this blog (so pretentious) for what it is: word vomit. It’s my word vomit and you can like it, hate it, be completely indifferent to it, I really don’t care.
First and foremost, here are a few things you should know about me:
1.     I love to write but it also fucking terrifies me.
2.     I curse a lot.
3.     I am and actress. Sorry, an ACTOR. (Go feminism!)
4.     I am not a feminist. Bitches calm down, let me explain! I am all for girl power, equality, inclusiveness, etc. After all, I am a woman and a fucking smart one and I will not apologize for it. But lets be real, you’ll never catch me with hairy pits and legs and if you tell me to smile, I won’t scream at you and think you’re trying to objectify me.
5.     I believe in chivalry. Call me sexist. Whatever. I hope you get hit in the face by the door your boyfriend didn’t hold for you when you were walking into a restaurant in your pretty dress and heels.
6.     I’m afraid of rejection. Who isn’t?
7.     I’m afraid of babies. I’m afraid of the way they look at me; it gives me tunnel vision and I start to panic.
8.     I don’t know if I can be a mom. Actually, let me rephrase that. I don’t know if I want to be a mom. (Sorry mom, nothing against you, I swear) In fact, my biggest fear is realizing that I am just too selfish to want to give up my life to raise another human.
9.     Anyone who says their life is better after having children is a fucking liar! More fulfilling? Maybe. Better? Nope. I guess it depends on your idea of better.
10.  I believe my 9 lbs. Chihuahua and I have the same size bladder. In fact, I firmly believe that if I ever get pregnant, I would have to wear diapers for 9 months straight.  I would pee my pants if there were a bean in my uterus.
11. I believe my 9 lbs. Chihuahua and I are soul mates.  I die a little every time I leave the house and see the look on his face.  When we’re cuddled up on the couch, I purposely make myself feel uncomfortable so he can be more comfortable. If that’s not love, I don’t know what is.
12. I think you can have more than one soul mate in your lifetime, at separate times or at the same time. My husband’s my soul mate, my friend is my soul mate, my boyfriend who passed away was (is) my soul mate (that’s a story for another day). Soul mates don’t have to be lovers people! They are people you connect with on a different level. It’s almost like you exist on the same frequency as them. You love and understand them unconditionally and losing them would throw your life completely out of balance, because for some fucked up reason, we feel like our life makes more sense because of the fact that we connect with these so-called soulmates.
13. Oh yeah, I’m married! To an actor. Fml
14. I’m sarcastic. In case you haven’t already noticed. But I also don’t think I have an annoying sense of humor. I’m not like one of those people who is SO sarcastic that you don’t know whether or not I’m joking anymore. That’s annoying.
15. A lot of things annoy me. I’ll save that list for another entry.
16. I have daddy issues. Don’t we all….
Tumblr media
17. I have a severe; I mean SEVERE fear of losing everyone I love; not of being abandoned by them, a fear of them dying. It’s horrible I know. It’s no way to live but I can’t help it. My husband doesn’t know this, but every time he travels somewhere without me, I replay different scenarios of hearing the news of his plane crashing in my head. I prepare for the worst. It’s stupid, I know! He’s more likely to suffer a deathly car accident, but then again, that could happen.
18. On that note, I can positively say that 100% of the anxiety I suffer everyday comes from the fact that I cannot control everything and everyone around me. I can’t protect everyone, not even myself. I am slowly beginning to accept that.
19. I used to think the horoscope was stupid. I don’t know about that anymore. I’m confused.
20. I don’t like religion. All I’m gonna say about this right now is I understand why religion came about. I get it. I get the point of it. Organized religion, like organized governments created order and unity. But then humans just had to out-human themselves and fuck everything up and start the crusades and start killing everyone who didn’t believe in the same stupid God they believed in.
21. I’m spiritual, not religious. Call me a fucking LA cliché, whatevs. At least I don’t live in constant fear of being punished by God for saying what I think.
22. I’m not a racist. Kind of. I’m a little racist….I guess that makes me a racist. How do I explain this without offending anyone? I make fun of Latinos, hence, myself. Does that count as racism? I love diversity. In fact, I encourage diversity but I also think we’ve all been a complete stereotype of our ethnic group at some point.
23. I think I’m more fluent in English than I am in Spanish, which is embarrassing. Or maybe my thoughts are more fluent in English, which is why I don’t write in Spanish; unless it’s poetry, because it sounds prettier and grossly cheesy at the same time.
24. I love movies. I live for movies. I’m an actor for crying out loud! I think whoever doesn’t watch movies or listens to music is a soulless devil.
25. I believe everyone is capable of apologizing. But I think that if you are never taught to apologize, you will always think of an apology as a sign of weakness. I think it shows strength and I think it takes guts.
26. I cry a lot. Not by myself, though, a lot of things I see and hear make me cry. The older I get, the more I cry. I used to make fun of my mom for crying over the lamest things; like a Hallmark Christmas movie or a Mexican novela. But now I cry watching novelas or when I see something that is unbearably cute.
Tumblr media
27. I hate when people tickle me, so please don’t ever tickle me. In my mind, ticking is synonymous with torture. Tickles don’t make me laugh, they make me cry; just like clowns.
28. I fucking hate clowns. Who ever thought that clowns could be entertaining…to children?! Who ever saw a red rubber ball and said, “oh, I can put this over my nose, wear a ridiculous onesie, put white makeup on my face, a rainbow afro on my head, huge ass shoes and make children laugh?! Unless you’re Patch fucking Adams, I don’t want to see you wearing a red nose.
29. I am a total germaphobe. Blood doesn’t gross me out though; I find it kind of fascinating actually.
30. Blood is almost as fascinating to me as finding out someone has a twin brother or sister. Like, WHAT? There’s another YOU that I had no idea about?!  It just blows my mind.
Look, I realize that I will probably end up offending a ton of people with this BLOG but I am sick of people getting offended over nothing. Wanna know what I find offensive? BAD GRAMMAR.
I learned a new word the other day: Jouska (n): “a hypothetical conversation that you compulsively play out in your head – a crisp analysis, a cathartic dialogue…” I don’t know how to use this word in a fucking sentence and apparently neither does the Internet. All I know is I have felt this way every day of my 26 year old existence. I compulsively play out actions and conversations in my head that never end up actually taking place. And if they do take place, they're never how I pictured them. I wish I were more impulsive, like those people that talk before they think. Do you know how long it took for me to get off my ass and start writing this? Anyway, I digress. The point is, I’ve had a year long writer’s block and writing something that people can actually read was one of my new year’s resolutions. I need to stop thinking about things I want to do or say and just actually DO them. I also need to stop using the word "things".
I have come to the conclusion this year that if I keep holding my thoughts and emotions in, I will explode. This is after all why I am a performer. I need to show, I need to explain and I need to be heard.
I’m not sure what this whole “word vomit” thing is going to be about, but then again, I’m calling it word vomit for a reason.

Its 6:38 pm warm/sunny/fake doctors,real friends
Welcome to “8 Questions with……”
Okay,I am going to admit something here…..for the first time,I have hidden something from a guest. So now I can see you shaking your head and saying “What???”    So I’m trying to broaden the blog and my friend Rebecca encouraged me to start using LinkedIn more. I told her I thought that was just a job seeker network site and she explained it is but its so much more now. You are encouraged to not only network but also promote yourself and since you are a writer, you should promote your blog.    So I have been slowly doing this and that is how I met our guest Jason Bourque.  I was posting on LinkedIn when I saw a post about Jason’s new film “My Wife’s Secret Life” being promoted by Lifetime. So not only did I not follow Jason but I asked him for a interview. He very generously agreed and I was pretty stoked.    Of course since I had pretty much cold asked Jason,I knew I had to do my research so I could ask some good questions. As I scanned over the movies he directed,I suddenly stopped cold. It seems like Jason and I had a “history” between us.    When I first started film reviewing with Paladin,I really knew zero about what I was doing,I would watch the movie and then express my opinion. I didn’t know anything about the process about filmmaking,I just knew if I liked it or not.    The second film I ever reviewed was a made for SyFy disaster film called “Seattle Superstorm” and I thought it was pretty cheesy and bad. I’m not defending nor changing my POV about it but I have learned a lot about films since then….how they made, budgets, casting, special effects, indie vs. major studios,IFC vs. A24,etc……   I know that today I would write my review differently,I wouldn’t change my opinion but I could understand the constraints that Jason was under and that he was trying his best with what he was given.    He won’t know any of this until I post this interview,I didn’t tell him that I had reviewed “Superstorm” in only my 2nd review. I like to think just as he has grown as a director,I have grown as a writer and I hope he will understand that.    With that said,Jason Bourque is director that can slide behind the camera and create magic – be it feature films, hard hitting documentaries or helming Hallmark and Lifetime Channel movies. He was won awards for both his documentaries and his feature film work. I am very happy to introduce you to Jason as he answers his 8 Questions…
Please introduce yourself and tell us a little about your current project.
Thanks Patrick. As a working indie director, writer, producer, I usually have about a dozen projects on the go in various stages of development. I love collaborating on feature work in between television movie gigs. So in a quick snap shot I have two features I produced in post-production – rom com “Godfrey” starring Nick Thune, Cleopatra Coleman and Iliza Shlesinger and the family drama “When Time Got Louder” starring Willow Shields, Lochlyn Munro and Elizabeth Mitchell. A Lifetime movie I exec-produced “My Husband’s Deadly Past” aired last week. As a director, my lifetime movie “My Wife’s Secret Life” just got a Leo nomination (Excellence in BC Film and Television) for Best Director and Best Lead actor. It’s my second year in a row for a nomination. This year I also had my movie “Hotwired in Suburbia” released (on most VOD platforms) and the Hallmark flick “Amazing Winter Romance”.  I know it sounds like a lot but I’m admittedly a workaholic when it comes to filmmaking – It’s my passion.
How have you been handling the pandemic? What have you done to keep busy?
It’s such a horrible global curveball we’re living through and it’s been heartbreaking. Personally I’ve found solace focusing on family and health. I’m also a writer so I’m used to long stretches cooped up balancing my laptop on my pug’s head (she’s a lap dog) as I write 🙂 I’ve been very prolific over the last three months – series development, contracted script polishes and applications for my company www.goldstarprod.com I’m also overseeing a couple writers as well. I love to mentor new writers and directors and I give back when I can.
When did you know you wanted to become involved in the film industry and was directing always your goal going in?What makes directing so appealing to you?
For as long as I can remember I’ve always been a natural storyteller and artist. I knew I wanted to make movies since I was fifteen, after watching “Evil Dead” and “Alien” back-to-back and since then it was always my goal.  I dived pretty quick into movie-making, starting out with zombie shorts with the local kids in the neighbourhood.   Directing is my first love and I totally prefer it to writing (that can be a lonely existence sometimes) and producing (lots more stress, personality management and sometimes factors out of my control). For me, directing is all about teamwork and it’s such a massive collaboration with creatives which I love. I’ll never take a “Film by Jason Bourque” credit – I simply don’t believe in it.
You are the rare director who walks both in drama and sci-fi and yet have also done several award winning documentaries, can you share your mindset  when you work on a documentary versus a fictional film? What was working on “Shadow Company” like? Were you shocked at what you discovered? How much of “Shadow Company” influenced the making of your film “Drone”?
Hey thanks for doing your homework and asking about my docs! As a storyteller, I’m totally at ease jumping from dramatic features to docs to scripts for other directors. I find the process of making documentaries more fulfilling /important than the final product. They allow me to travel with a small crew, meet incredible people and create a dramatic story sometimes on the fly. It’s very liberating. “Shadow Company” was co-written and co-directed with my friend Nick Bicanic. I had a huge learning curve on that one and it came at a time when little was actually known about private military companies. It’s heavy material, sometimes disturbing, sometimes heartbreaking yet we also infused it with lots of entertainment value to make it palatable for the general public.         Ultimately it was used as a teaching tool for the US Senate which I’m very proud of. Making “Shadow Company” was a huge journey and time commitment (a couple years) but well worth it. It influenced “Drone” a little when it came to writing the script with creative writing partner Paul Birkett. Having a character as a private CIA drone contractor was born out of “Shadow Company”. It also allowed us to stay away from the glut of military drone movies that had recently come out like “Eye in the Sky” and “Good Kill”.
How did you get asked to direct Lifetime and Hallmark Channel movies? What was the process like? We know actors have auditions but do directors have to audition as well?
As directors we do sometimes audition through creative calls. Our agents submit us and we’re on that magical list that gets cut down to whomever finally gets the job.  Luckily I have a track record with some producers who offer me the gigs. The majority of the television movies I work on feel like indie filmmaking. Sometimes they’re sold to Hallmark or Lifetime afterwards. If they don’t sell to those broadcasters, they can also be sold to Netflix or other platforms. So many ways to sell product out there! With the “The Chronicle Mysteries: Recovered” I was hired by the creator and star Alison Sweeney because she wanted the pilot more stylish / cinematic than the usual MOWs and she was a fan of “Drone”. I was then approved by Hallmark.
What is it like as a feature film director with a lot freedom to suddenly being asked to direct TV films with a much stricter format?   What do you do to leave your footprint on the movie?
I don’t mind the MOW (Movie Of the Week) sandbox at all. I’m constantly looking at ways to raise the bar and I’m always learning, even after 18 years of directing. I also direct for a company that gives me lots of freedom on set. They’re shot fast though – usually 13-15 days so it’s all about the planning / prep.
If you could remake 2 of your films with a 100 million budget, which three would you choose and why?
“Termination Point”!  It’s a very cool time travel disaster movie I directed for SyFy starring Lou Diamond Phillips and Jason Priestley. The script by Peter Sullivan is truly excellent – the hook is a jaw-dropper and it has a huge scope to it. The plot is too twisty to explain briefly but it’s well worth checking out.  I love this movie but the VFX company went bankrupt half way through post and I had to shoot it in 15 days.
“Doomsday Prophecy” is another SyFy movie I would love to re-make. I co-wrote the script and again, had to shoot it in 14 days but it’s a fantastic premise with excellent characters. The Moai heads of Easter Island are an alien defence mechanism against a dark star about to eat our planet.
You subscribe to the Jack Webb idea of using a lot of the same actors for your films, what are the advantages and disadvantages of using the same actors? How do you approach a film that is cast with a lot of rookie performers?  Do you like to be involved with the casting process?
I’m hands on with all casting. Honestly, as an indie filmmaker having to shoot quickly, I sometimes can’t afford to take chances. I need actors I can trust, are incredibly prepared and can sometimes handle eight pages of dialogue a day with only a couple takes. It’s why I’ve used actors like Matthew MacCaull in 5 movies. We have our own shorthand. With rookie performances it’s all about helping them connect to what makes their performance honest. Sometimes it might be a simple one line of direction – “Play it like you’re talking to your mother” for example. After years of directing I’ve found it’s best to avoid mapping out the emotional landscape of a character for an actor. Rookie actors can sometimes be overwhelmed and that relationship always needs to stem from a foundation of trust.
I’m going to put you on the spot here……but what three actors and three actresses have you enjoyed working with the most and why?       Pick one relatively unknown actor do you think will break out within a year.
I gravitate towards really good people I genuinely like. No ego. Hard workers. Big hearts.
Sarah Butler. She always goes the extra mile and is a perfectionist. Sarah is extremely well prepared, the crew loves her and she doesn’t shy away from physically demanding work. And she’s a dog person like me so we bonded instantly 🙂
Josh Byer. He’s an incredible character actor and he always makes unique choices, whether its as a supporting lead or as a day player. There’s no one else I can compare him to in the Vancouver acting pool so he’s my secret weapon for elevating a scene. I’ve had him in a dozen movies. Josh is also a close friend and a triple threat.  Besides acting, he’s an accomplished artist and musician.
Matthew MacCaull. Excellent on all levels and very versatile. I’ve directed him in thrillers as both the villain and also the romantic lead. Matt smashed the lead role in my “Black Fly” movie out of the ballpark and he’s been my favourite lead ever since.
Which three genres  are the most challenging for you as a director? What is more important- a good story or a big budget?
I’m comfortable with all genres but thrillers come very naturally – I love exploring the dark corners of the human condition and I have a knack for creating tension. Comedy can be challenging sometimes – Hallmark walks a fine line with their comedy and they shy away from belly laughs or big physical comedy. it’s the art of the “soft chuckle” 🙂 I love sci-fi but there’s an extra level of prep involved due to storyboards, animatics etc… due to big CGI action sequences. The challenges are the usual ones since the dawn of filmmaking. There never seems to be enough time or money. Luckily the general audience never knows the majority of compromises made by the indie director.  A good story worth telling is always the most important to me. “Black Fly” cost very little to make.  I’ve seen so many big budget movies fail to engage an audience due to a poor script or it’s an an overblown sequel no one asked for. It’s usually because the big budgets also mean “filmmaking by committee” due to the stakes being so high. Too many producers with their hands in the creative decision making can create chaos. A camera operator I work with has a great saying – “Tweak it till it sucks” which I suspect happens a lot with big budgets.
What is your current dream/passion project and can you share a little bit about it?
I have three I gotta make – “Iris”, a contained horror that takes place in an ER during a hurricane. “Fourteen” – an action movie about a murdered hitman who gets reincarnated as a fourteen-year old boy and tries to take down the crime syndicate responsible for his death and finally “Claw” – a contained sci-fi / home invasion about a robotics engineering student who builds a medical robot that kidnaps her and her boyfriend.
The cheetah and I are flying over to watch to you shoot your latest film but we are a day early and now you are stuck playing tour guide, what are we doing?
Vancouver is beautiful. We have the world’s best sushi, tons of coffee shops, Stanley Park for great hiking and bike trails. I always recommend Granville Island for a visit – an awesome artistic hub with a vibrant market. Our restaurant scene is world-class along with micro-breweries.  Hopefully everything settles soon and you can drop by for a visit. If all goes well I’ll be directing again this fall. Thanks Patrick!
I like to thank Jason for agreeing to do this interview with me. The cheetah and I have a copy of “Drone” and we’ll be taking a peek at it very soon.  And you already know we’re going to get his Hallmark Channel films as well because that is how the cheetah and I roll.
