Since I promised Mr. Feast I wouldn't watch ahead of him and he's slowly catching up, I've taken a pause in my gleeful binge of 一念关山 A Journey to Love to jot down a few of the disorganized thoughts I have about my best beloved favorite girl Yang Ying in the wonderful first eighteen episodes of this drama.

MILD SPOILERS BEYOND.

I cannot wait to see little pocket sized wolf cub Princess Yang Ying do her thing in the next half of the show. Honestly feel so blessed to have this character; there’s no one else like her in cdrama or American TV for that matter!

One of the themes I enjoy in stories about royal power struggles are narrative arcs for female characters who transition from naive to knowing, usually borne out of experiencing the inescapability of their femaleness in a treacherous sexist environment and consequently the limited array of tarnished tools at their disposal and the ways these tools are then deployed. I enjoy that type of story- Book Sansa Stark, my nostalgic fave! Zhen Huan! Minglan, even, in a way. As for historical examples, Empress Matilda! Isabella of France!

But I'm also absolutely relishing this twist on the familiar theme in A Journey to Love.

Because Yang Ying is a royal woman being explicitly trained to grasp the duties and wield the power of a prince, not the oblique power of a princess. The success of the mission, and the lives/fates of the Wu emperor, her subjects, and her now beloved friends in the delegation, depend on her ability to convincingly wear the mantle of princely responsibility, power, and prerogative and to physically and mentally embody this role. And for a child who is as malleable as she is in the beginning of the show, this incredibly formative AND transformative extended roleplay will inevitably become forever entrenched in her conception of self and her sense of possibility.

The kind of limited power she might have been able to achieve as an impoverished minor princess requires a very different skillset from the one she's acquiring. It would only be a contingent and conditional power, a la her sister-in-law the Empress of Wu or the Noble Consort Chu or Chuyue, the tomboy princess from the state of An, who perfectly demonstrates how a clever, capable, wealthy, beautiful royal woman with a powerful family is still a blunted sword.

What would be fascinating to explore, beyond her triumph as Prince Li of Wu (which, to reiterate, I'm SO EXCITED FOR), is the inevitable friction of what she would feel and do after mastering and embodying princely power but then must contend with the expectations and limitations of the identity she has long outgrown but will still be expected to perform once the mission is complete.

I don't think the drama will have time to cover this- after all, she is a supporting character and it would be a thematic tangent. But I suppose that's what fic is for! Maybe I will once again be inspired to write fic, depending on how they end Yang Ying's story...

Stories and characters that reveal emotional truth through pretense will always be my jam. In addition to the unexpectedly delightful Ren Ruyi/Ning Yuanzhou, I love this show so much for giving me Yang Ying.

listen,,, there’s not much in life me and my dad agree on.

but he just said out loud during lunch “I refuse to visit the united states as long as that prick is in charge. which is a shame, because i love new york… but he won’t get A CENT from me during his administration. not from business, not from vacations. NOTHING.”

and myyyyy god. okay. maybe we do agree on something. maybe he IS changing.

like- he used to be a trump supporter a few years ago— hell, he used to be pro-trump when joe won last election. its pretty shocking (at least for me) to see such a business man like him truly realize how much of a joke and miserable trump is.

he used to have yearly trips to the US because of business deals and partnerships. i think it’s been one or two years since he stopped going (i actually went as his representative a few years ago because ‘he really didn’t feel like going’), maybe this is why.

like- i am aware he’s been switching over to some chinese business partners here and there; but it never occurred to me he finally (FINALLY) was cutting ties with the US.

which is kinda sad in a way, because the whole image the world had of the “American Dream™” is finally breaking and it’s kinda… lame to see. the united states used to be this,,, dream filled, evolved utopia full of opportunities and colors and- it used to be SO MUCH back then; at least to me.

and don’t get me wrong, it still is, so much. like, no matter how much evil tries to take over, i know there’s still good people and dreams and opportunities and GOOD. there’s still GOOD. but the good got drowned by the bad and the,,, well, ridiculous, i guess is the right word here.

it got to a point where i think us, the rest of the world (at least a big chunk of us) don’t really see the united states as this “huge deal” anymore. it’s more like a sitcom, a TV show. it’s truly ridiculous to witness. everyone is OBSESSED with being the next big thing. there’s people in the literal STREETS OF L.A. and the government complains about them even though they keep enabling that way of living. there’s so much going on all the time, there’s fires, there’s a new celebrity every week, there’s a new drama, everyone and every place is just /ON SOME SHIT/ EVERYWHERE AT ALL TIMES— it doesn’t feel real anymore. it’s almost as if they enjoy being the butt of the joke. they’re the literal embodiment of “any publicity is STILL publicity so let’s royally FUCK OFF and they will still support us anyways!!” AND THEY DO!! PEOPLE STILL DO!! BECAUSE THEY LOVE IT.

THEY LOVE THE DRAMA AND THEY LOVE BEING MESSY AND THEY LOVE THE ATTENTION AND— ITS INSANE. oh god, it’s insane.

i saw trump speaking out today, elon musk throwing the nazi sign, luigi is still under investigation, the war in palestine is still going, the fires on L.A.,,,, and the trending topic is the 14 hour tiktok ban? seriously??

i don’t know why i felt compelled to rant here lol i guess it’s the one place i know no one will hear me out yet the one place i can complain to the void… i don’t know. i don’t know what the future of america has in store. and it sucks because it directly involves us, everyone around the globe. there’s rumors of possible wars, they’re really playing with fire with mexico, they’re jealous of the impressive growth china has been slowly building over the years + the whole panama thing on the side… it’s going to affect all of us, one way or another.

it’s sad. to think about the future, it’s miserable.

i guess all that’s left to do is to live. at least that’s what i’ll try to do. and i’ll fuck up, oh i know i probably already am. but honestly, if not now, when? i don’t even have a future assured- most of us don’t. so why not. best case scenario we manage to make it out alive just fine. worst case scenario? i lived and i learned.

whatever. what else is left to lose?

I HAVE LITERALLY BEEN WANTING THIS INTO A SHOW SINCE I GOT BLESSED AND DISCOVERED THESE BOOKS

but red white and royal blue should have been a show and not a movie. it’s cute and everything but I don’t think it did the books justice. like I feel so much was left out which I get but it should have been an eight episode miniseries at least. and I’m not hating on it and I’ve always been the “the books aren’t always better” because I have proof but I do feel they left a shit ton from the books WHICH I ALSO GET

I don’t think I would want Nicholas to play Lucien or Oliver. I just- I think I would much rather see a new up and coming actor playing them or someone we haven’t seen on the screen that often. honestly just because I love him, Matt Daddario and I think he’s severely underrated as comedic and vastly talented as a drama actor or whatever. he did such a wonderful job with Alec from shadowhunters and I’m yearning to see him in more things. he’s American but I still think he could handle this role quite well. I mean there’s just so many choices of actors who could handle these two roles

because luc is very chaotic (way more chaotic than Alex and I’m willing to die on this hill) and seeing Nicholas as Oliver, I feel like it’s just Henry except for the royalty part. Nicholas is very talented but I would like to see more underrated actors or newish actors give it a go

Luc has very intense feelings and has been through so much trauma and this is a very dramatic but also comedic role and Oliver is very serious but has extensive trauma thanks to his fucked up parents. like I don’t want them to adapt this if they don’t put any effort in. like if it’s just some movie, then please don’t do that. these characters mean so much to me and others and they deserve every effort being made into them

yes I’ve thought this through lmao

and while we are talking about lgbtq+ adaptions, I’m also putting the unlikely series (heir, pair, and spare) on the list. these have jumped to my fav lgbtq+ books and I would love a show adaption of them as well. they’re very underrated to me and I don’t see them being talked about that often. the unlikely pair has become one of my favorite books I read this year, and I read song of Achilles so that is saying A LOT

Matthew López did such an amazing job in Red, White & Royal Blue, that I wish he would direct a show based on Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall. I mean, it could have 3 seasons:

Season 1: Boyfriend Material

Season 2: Husband Material

Season 3: Father Material

AND... he could hire Nicholas Galitzine to play Luc. He's the right age and everything! And, yes... I know Nicholas could also play a wonderful Oliver... but I would love to see his take on Luc, you know what I mean? Such a chaotic character, with so many insecurities, so messed up... he'd do him justice! Besides... Oliver would be a little like reprising his Henry role... a little repetitive, I believe.

Top ten wlw films/TV-series you recommend?😍

hi!! i do not feel qualified to answer this properly but i am honoured, thank you for trusting my taste in wlw stuff 😁

last year i was asked for my top 10 wlw films so this list will be top however many i can think of wlw tv shows (i don't actually watch that much wlw tv...)

• gentleman jack 2019-present - we're in yorkshire the 1830s and suranne jones stars as real-life wlw anne lister wooing her shy and anxious neighbour (also called ann, there's a lot of ann(e)s in this) and offering the sale of a coal mine for no less than 226 pounds 17 shillings and sixpence

• i am not okay with this 2020 - dark comic fantasy about a teenager navigating her sexuality, high school life, and her new superpowers. it's very intense and the main storyline is her powers but the gay yearning is Real too

• tipping the velvet 2002 - it's the victorian era and music hall male impersonator kitty butler seduces a girl from kent who then becomes part of her act and later goes solo and falls in love with someone else. there's quite a bit of nudity and sex and double-entendres involving oysters and anna chancellor being a top and honestly, strap in for a wild ride (innuendo fully intended)

• feel good 2020-present - ok so i've not seen series 2 yet but i'm sure it's just as good as s1 bc mae martin (writer and main character) is awesome. it's as much about addiction as it is sexuality (and gender in s2). worth it just for lisa kudrow tbh. mae and george are so sweet and hot in s1 but also there's george dealing with being in her first relationship not with a man and a lot of dark stuff in mae's brain

• one day at a time 2017-2020 - again, i've not seen the final series BUT. it's an american latinx family dealing with family stuff and the daughter is a lesbian who (spoiler alert, ish) dates a non-binary person from early s2 and they are cute as heck. watch also for rita moreno as the very dramatic and hilarious abuela

• vigil 2021 - suranne jones again, this time solving a murder on a royal navy submarine. and her colleague back at the police station she's liaising with? yeah they've done a lot of liaising if ya get me... don't quote me but i think it's the first time a major bbc crime drama series has had wlw main characters and the representation meant so much to me

I think it’s actually so funny with Meghan how people are always comparing her(negatively) to people and then those same people come out and are like “I love her actually, she’s super sweet and passionate about charity.” It’s happened with Beyoncé, Dolly Parton (through her sister), Oprah before the interview, and so many more. It’s like the hate y’all think people have for her is in your own heads, everyone you look up to outside of the royal family loves her 😂 (which is actually weird honestly how universally loved she is, kinda like Chris Evans or Dolly Parton where almost no one has bad things to say about them, but because of this royal family drama people think she’s something she’s not)

It’s true that she seems to be universally beloved by the people who know her.

(Besides all of her trash, jealous family members, i should say.)

I don’t see too much hate from people who aren’t royalists or their even more pathetic American sycophants, MAGAs. I usually see either indifference (which is fine) or arguments like “she enjoyed the perks of royalty before the abuse started,” but the abuse preceded those so-called perks, and the so-called perks sometimes were the abuse. I think the people making those arguments just don’t know tbh.

Books That Mil's Read 2021:

American Royals by Katharine McGee

4/5 stars

"Yes, exactly, because you’re a woman, and the world will make everything exponentially more difficult for you. It isn’t right, or fair, but it is the truth."

What to say about this book? If there's anyone out there that actually pays attention to how long a book has been on my currently reading shelf on here, you'll see that it's been quite a few months -almost half a year- there's a lot of things that atribute to that; two jobs now, going back to college soon, Global pandemic and all that but this isn't to say that this was a bad book.

I felt moved and immediately compelled to at least purchased the second one after finishing it and it is a Solid 4 star read and I'd recommend it to anyone who this seems like their type of book. It has made me want to immerse myself in royalty culture, learning more about politics, maybe even reading like the Gossip Girl books to see like more teens in public positions and whatnot and what being a socialite is like.

It was so multifaceted and I loved the complexities that they gave to such young people in terms of things like Beatrice not being sure if she was ready to take on such a severe role because is anyone ever really prepared for such a heavy role like ruling a country? This is also something that I have been observing from reading Obama's Memoir while reading this book. I also loved all of the over-the-top soap opera drama. I loved all of the romance plots that for whatever reason could not work out. I was particularly invested in Beatrice's with Connor.

And I like that a character like Samantha existed in this book without her being completely villainized. Sure she was selfish and maybe not the best at all times but she still very much loved the people that were close to her and when needing to step up a bit she did. I do think that she was insensitive sometimes never thinking to understand why somebody might be keeping something from her or why somebody might also be going through shit as well. Basically if she had an issue she let that overcloud her judgment to where she was the "only" person going through an issue. Also her romance with Teddy is so steamy.

The character of Daphne as the villain was so compelling. I love the idea of her not caring about Jefferson as a person but still wanting to do whatever she could even if it meant manipulating and ruining people's lives to become a royal. Her romance plot felt a bit off though.

While I liked Sam and Jefferson as characters and how their dynamics with Nina were so specific, I could not care for Nina as a character which was so weird for me, since I loved that they added Hispanic rep with her. Honestly though I would enjoy one day seeing a book about Nina's mom growing up. Like a latina queer woman climbing through the ranks of a royal court and falling in love? Sign me the fuck up. But anyways yeah Nina bored me. She felt to be the most immature of all the characters and should just be dropped by the Royals if she's that ashamed of that part of her life that she DIDN'T EVEN HAVE A PICTURE OF HER CHILDHOOD LIFELONG FRIEND HANGING IN HER DORM.

But yes I am definitely picking up the second book. Imma look into more political and Royal dramas now and I really care about these characters. Would reccomend.

Ok first of all, the bathroom thing was because it wasn’t how it normally was and it freaked me out right before exams, but now exams are done and I’m free!!

Secondly, I feel like I did well on my English exam so that dream helped me and lastly, I’m your age (15).

Thanks for all the messages <3 anyways I’m currently going through a stack of books I got from the library. I’ve started on American royals which is like a super drama filled book about America with kings and queens instead of a president and it is filled with cliches but I love it yk?

Anyways, I’ve ditched a group of friends that felt a bit toxic and my closer friends and I have been like bonding, so that has been great! One of my besties and I have also started like a therapy sesh where we talk about our family and stuff and I think that’s pretty good. I watched the externals last night too! Have you done anything fun in the past week? If you have any movie recs pleaseeee tell me. I have Netflix and Disney plus and so much time rn.

my cousin recommended i buy american royals and i have it! i just haven't read it :/ please let me know if you like it so i can have motivation to read again! i'm currently reading the secret (manifestation book). it's one of the most classic law of attraction books and i've had it for summer, but just haven't had the time to read. :(

i'm super happy for you on the dumping toxic friends part. it seems like everything is going well, for the most part! talking to close friends about family issues is one thing i couldn't do without. it really helps to get things off your system. how was eternals? i've heard some people didn't like it much! i honestly haven't done anything "fun", but it was fun to me! and so relaxing - i got to write and i've been putting together an extensive document where i record all my spiritual and witchy findings so people that want to learn can read it, too! it's not done yet, but it's been really fun putting it together! if you're interested, i can share the doc with you, too <3 i honestly don't have any movie recs, but here are the ones that i rewatch very often: monster-in-law, maid in manhattan, any twilight movie, but especially the first one, what a girl wants, and wild child. and i have good bad thriller movie recs if you like them - they're mostly psychological thrillers.

Question - outside of lone star, what other kind of projects (tv or film) would you love to see Rafa star in? I feel like he would be so good in an action movie or some type of drama movie where he could show his range of emotions and how talented he really is. I know he’s new to acting compared to the other cast members but from what we have seen of him as Carlos with such little material the writers give him compared to other characters, I can see that he will go far. I wonder if some fans could ask him that in future virtual (or in person, eventually) q&a’s because I love hearing him talk about acting and stuff

Honestly, I want to see Rafa star in anything that he wants to star in. That’s the really great thing about liking an actor who works with intentionality; it means that the projects that he decides to take will matter to him, that they will reflect the issues and things that he cares about, and I want to see all of that.

He’s already stated that he will refuse to take roles where he’s a “token” character or one of the only POC on set, he’s said that he has no interest in being a celebrity or super famous... I think all of that is great, and that makes me excited to see what work he deems worthy of pursuit. It tells me that not only does he have a lot of respect for his profession, but that he also recognizes the power that his voice has as someone in Hollywood with a growing fanbase, and he’s planning to be very intentional about how he will use that voice. I love that.

We know he’s a pretty active person and that he loves Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and he’s talked about how he loves to get to use those skills in his work, so I would love to see him get opportunities to do that more in the future, whether in an action film or something else. I also think he’s sitting on a boatload of comedic skills that we’ve only seen glimpses of, so I want more of that too! I want to see him doing all kinds of diverse projects playing diverse characters with a chance to really show what he can do.

Also, to access my very specific one-project wish list that I have not been at all quiet about: I need Rafa to play Cash in the film adaptation of Red, White and Royal Blue. I just need it. I would be the *perfect* first film role in a big-budget movie for him - it’s not a lead, but it’s got a lot of legs and if it was written right, he could do a lot with it (also, we know he’s a scene-stealer and Cash could steal oh-so-many scenes if given the chance). Plus, the lead character is a LGBTQIA+ Mexican-American, so I think he would probably find the themes important (but that’s just me speculating, so I could be wrong).

Anyway, all of that to say: I’m just really excited for Rafa’s career, and I can’t wait to see what he does next!

I’ve been sucked into watching this royal family drama the way I was sucked into the Diana drama back when Is as a kid. And it’s just . . . It’s like a Jerry Springer style white trash family train wreck, only posher because of the fancy hats.

I’m already familiar with the weird and problematic family dynamics that are the fancy hat people. But Our American Cousin brings the American drama to season things up.

She apparently has a bro-journalist stalker named Peirs (which has got to be the British version of Chad). Peirs exudes frat boy vibes, and seems to be doing the British royal press corps version of sending dic pix to that one girl who went on one date and then ghosted him.

And there is the American style white trash sister who seems like she’s going to die mad that her parents broke up when she was a teenager and her dad got a new family and the baby sister who took all the attention is still getting more attention than her.

Ever since Our American Cousin removed herself from the drama (by moving out of the whole commonwealth, no less.) the press hasn’t been able to write stories about how she and her sister-in-law are constantly at each other’s throats. (The way they did with her mother in law, and step mother in law). So instead they’re writing stories about how her husband and his brother are at each other’s throats (but in a manly, British, stiff upper lip kind of way).

There is now talk that papa big ears shouldn’t be the next king. Which. . . Fair. He comes across as a bumbling, well meaning but utterly clueless and entitled sort. His poor decisions lead into most of the drama of the previous generation.

The only one who seems to be coming out well in all this is the Queen. Who just loves everyone so much, and does not have a bad word to say about anyone, and is just lovely. Everyone says so.

Too soon to tell if bro-and-sis in law will do better, but they do seem to take it seriously, and the British seem to love them.

This would honestly make a funny situation comedy. I should probably spend less time reading this stuff.

BLOGTOBER 10/4/2020: SOCIETY

Without having a survey to back me up, I feel comfortable asserting that as a horror fan, you go through different phases with SOCIETY. It’s a basic fact of life, and yet it morphs and mutates underneath you, shocking you anew just when you think you’ve got a grip on it. You never forget your first time, because there is simply nothing like it. Then, after you get over the initial shock of its patented brand of body horror, you start to take it for granted; it's so broad and monolithic that it becomes something like the Grand Canyon--when it’s not right there in front of you, you begin to experience it more iconically, as part of the wallpaper of existence, rather than an in-your-face confrontation with the limits of experience. Then, you revisit it every few years (or months, depending on what sort of person you are), and the prophylactic layer that your brain has wrapped around your memories of it--the one that allows you to think of SOCIETY as a fun, wacky cheap thrill--begins to crumble, and you realize all over again how iconoclastically vile it is. Wherever you happen to be at, with this inimitable genre landmark, you'd be hard pressed to deny that it earns its royal status among horror movies, just for being so uniquely fucked up.

Filmmaker Brian Yuzna is best known as the co-creator of the indispensable RE-ANIMATOR (or as the co-writer of HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS...depending on what sort of person you are, again), itself a milestone achievement in the blending of sex and gore that so characterized '80s horror production. That film clearly brought out the best in Yuzna and frequent collaborator Stuart Gordon (also of HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS fame...among other things), but it's interesting to see how they operate apart, to understand the unique ingredients that each filmmaker brought to the more perfect union of their classic Lovecraft adaptation. Gordon skewed darker and more intellectual, as evidenced by the end of his career with the shattering mob thriller KING OF THE ANTS, the disturbing true crime drama STUCK, and the Mamet-penned EDMOND. Yuzna, for his part, is almost anti-intellectual, preferring to cook up blackly comic, semi-pornographic nightmares like his two increasingly horny RE-ANIMATOR sequels, the terminal S&M fantasy RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD 3, and the shamelessly hokey comic book adaptation FAUST: LOVE OF THE DAMNED. Yuzna's lack of shame is really his defining feature as an artist, and nowhere is this more obvious than in his directorial debut and signature masterpiece, SOCIETY.

Yuzna was able to leverage the success of RE-ANIMATOR to lock in two directorial opportunities, BRIDE OF RE-ANIMATOR, and a bizarre body horror exercise about a Beverly Hills orphan who discovers that not only are his adoptive family from a different bloodline, but they're not even from the same species. That both pictures employed the writing team of Woody Keith and Rick Fry gives you a little taste of what to expect from SOCIETY, but to be frank, the latter threatens to make the former look like a very special episode of ER; "overkill" barely begins to describe SOCIETY’s ambitious assault on the human body. In a recent interview, the philipino-american director giggles perversely, "I think my friends were a little embarrassed for me (when they saw SOCIETY)," and this sound bite reminded me that the last, most important ingredient that Yuzna contributes to any project is unabashed joy. It's a little hard to imagine stomaching SOCIETY without it.

In this unusual scene from the class struggle in Beverly Hills, Billy Warlock (son of HALLOWEEN 2's Michael Myers, Dick Warlock) plays Bill Whitney, a rich, handsome, athletic high school student with a heavy duty anxiety disorder. Although he appears to have it all, he is plagued by nightmares and hallucinations, reflecting suspicions that the family that spoils him is also out to get him. Perhaps this is all understandable, though. Bill is under a lot of pressure these days, with his parents devoting all of their attention to his sister's coming out party, and his narcissistic girlfriend pushing him to ingratiate himself to the assholes higher up the social ladder; it's enough to make any teenager feel alienated and insecure. But, do these garden variety anxieties account for his visions of his sister's body deforming itself unnaturally, or the dubious evidence he finds that her debutante ball involves incestuous orgies and human sacrifice? Is Bill simply crumbling under the strain of societal expectations, or is the friction with his shrink, his parents, and his peers all symptomatic of an elaborate plot against him by elites who are truly less than human?

I can’t believe they use this cheapo blanket trick MORE THAN ONCE in a movie that is famous for its unforgettable special effects, and I guess I kind of love it.

In case I haven't made the answer abundantly obvious, I'll add that while SOCIETY is the purest expression of Yuzna-ness on the market, it has an important co-author in Screaming Mad George. The eccentric japanese FX master, whose name is apparently an amalgamation of Mad Magazine, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and...George, has produced some of horror's most outrageous makeup and visual effects, mostly for Yuzna, many of them in SOCIETY. If you've seen even a trailer for Alex Winter's 1993 oddity FREAKED--which is itself a grossout criticism of American social standards--then you are already familiar with SMG's trademark style. He specializes in twisted perversions of the human form that would make a cenobite blush, driven by a penchant for puns, and influenced equally by THE THING's Rob Botin, and Big Daddy Roth’s Rat Fink style. Screaming Mad George is instrumental in articulating Yuzna's premise: that behind the shimmering veneer of success and sophistication, the upper class are just a bunch of degenerates, who literally degenerate into something unimaginable behind closed doors. It's impossible to imagine SOCIETY without his sinuous, slithering monstrosities, or his indescribable realization of their most important social event, "the shunt".

It's easy to get overwhelmed by SOCIETY's visual impact, but its message is just as potent now as it was at the end of the Reagan era: Rich people are not only different from the rest of us, but in fact, they aren't even human. Writers Keith and Fry make an interesting choice of hero to help put this across. A lazier writer would have selected any archetype from the Freaks and Geeks set to create an easy Us vs Them tension, but SOCIETY is led by a promising young man who, for reasons he himself does not yet understand, is just not "the right kind of people". Bill appears to have every advantage in life, including a level of popularity that wins him presidency of the debate team despite his nerdier rival’s superior prowess--and yet, he suffers from a stigmatizing psychiatric disorder that is the natural result of feeling indefinably different from one's peers, and intuiting that, as a consequence, they don't even really like you. The shallow jock with deep-seated emotional problems is a much more interesting protagonist for this kind of social allegory than the charismatic outcasts that you get in movies like THE FACULTY and DISTURBING BEHAVIOR, for whom the idea that the elites could be aliens is just de rigueur.

It's worth noting that this complexity of character extends to Bill's love interest, sympathetic society girl Clarissa Carlyn (Playboy Playmate Devin DeVasquez). At first, she seems villainously eager to introduce Bill to the many splendors of "the shunting", but as the plot against him mounts to its horrifying conclusion, she defects. There appears to be a reason for this, although honestly, this is the most difficult part of SOCIETY for me to wrap my head around. Clarissa lives as an essentially independent adult, only burdened by her mother (Pamela Matheson), a possibly brain damaged hulk who lurks in and out of various scenes just to be disturbing, always announced by some toots on a tuba, before eventually siding with our heroes. I'm really not sure what's supposed to be going on in this part of the movie, except that this character contributes to a number of distasteful jokes. But, I hold on to the idea that by virtue of whatever disorder Mrs. Carlyn suffers from, she serves the purpose of priming Clarissa to rebel, since her very existence makes her daughter something of a societal outcast herself. That's the best I can do.

In any case, everyone working on SOCIETY commits completely, with Mrs. Carlyn being no exception. The movie's climactic orgy of the damned is an all hands on deck operation, just as reliant on Screaming Mad George's artistic abilities as it is on the actors' responsibility to make you believe that this fucked up shit is really happening. There's a visceral patina of sleaze spread over the entire film, dripping from the way that characters talk to and touch each other, flirting and flaunting their bodies in a distinctly unseemly fashion, even when it stays within the realm of mundane reality. This constant sinister, insinuating attitude on the part of the whole cast lays the foundation for what is to come, and while I appreciate everybody's hard work, my favorite performance is from an actor who only comes in at the very end: David Wiley as society king Judge Carter. Wiley's career consisted almost exclusively of the most ordinary sort of television work, which makes his outrageous turn in this alien porno flick all the more respectable. While other characters transition from suspicious pod people to full-on mutated perverts, Judge Carter has to show up just for the finale, establish his authority, rip off his clothes, and plunge straight into a sea of slime, happily fisting his way through the cast. Wiley meets this challenge with aplomb, making of himself a hybrid of Robert Englund and Gene Hackman, perfectly embodying the movie's joyful absurdity, and never betraying the slightest hint of embarrassment.

SOCIETY is very much a don't-look-down type of endeavor, a fairy that could expire at the slightest lapse in faith. There's a visual pun in the last act that's so gross, so offensive, so frankly idiotic, that I don't have the courage to describe it; my whole body tenses up when I know this scene is coming, as if it were the meat hook scene in TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE or the brutal rape in the middle of SHOWGIRLS. I don't like it, but at the same time, I respect Yuzna's unhesitating commitment to show it to me, and I think that actor Charles Lucia should get some kind of award for shouldering the burden so valiantly. SOCIETY is a daring movie in the truest sense, a film with more balls than brains, and in this it exposes the limitation of intelligence and taste, and the real need for pure transgression, in producing art of any real value. You might argue with me about whether Yuzna's masturbatory magnum opus really qualifies as art, but to respond to that, I'll quote the great transgressor Alejandro Jodorowsky: "If you are great, EL TOPO is a great picture. If you are limited, EL TOPO is limited." So stick that in your shunt and smoke it.

The same vibe comes from similar cinematography, tone, music as you’ve said, but it helps that theres parallels that are almost certainly just coincidences, but are still easy for skam fans to notice and get excited by: one of the guys wearing a cross in the cuddle clip like Even’s cross shirt in the evak cuddle clip, one of the guys serenading the other with Elu’s o helga natt song, a late night public breakdown like nora machwitz. Honestly? That they’re both European and not English language shows i think plays a big part as well, because if it was the exact same show but American, I doubt it’d get the same hype. It being European is the biggest dot connector for skam fans, because it feels ‘new’ or ‘unrecognizable’ the way skam was and less familiar than love victor for eg. I also think a lot of mlm evak fans just miss their evak remakes and want something to fill that void and there’s enough similarities here for that

Hi anon! ✨ You bring up an interesting point, that Skam is/was "new" or "unrecognizable". I guess that might be the case for US fans of Skam (and maybe others like Canadian, Australian, etc). But I feel like a good section of Skam fans are actually European and find Skam more relatable and recognize themselves in it more than they would in US shows like Love Victor.

For me personally, I went to high school in Spain and the US (I was a foreign exchange student in Oregon for a year). Skam was one of the few teen shows that almost instantly felt more relatable and reflective of my own experience than shows like Glee, Gossip Girl or One Tree Hill. But I also feel like none of these shows were reflective of my US experience either. 😂 I found My So-Called Life, Freaks and Geeks, and even Skam Austin, to be more reflective of my own experience, even when some of them were set years before (or after lol) I went to high school. I would say Love Victor is familiar not because it's reflective of an average US high school experience, but because the cinematography, casting, costuming, music, tone, etc... is in line with other US high school shows.

But on that note, I can't really imagine that Skam and Young Royals are "new" and "unrecognizable" in the same way??? Like, one is set at a public high school. And though the characters are on the wealthier end, they are not royalty/nobility-level wealthy. Young Royals is set at a private, boarding school, and their drama has to do with bloodlines and media relations and horses gvhvh. Surely Skam is more recognizable than Young Royals for the average US fan. Right??

Back to Skam fans' nationalities, it makes sense that language is a factor. Swedish and Norwegian are fairly similar, both for people who have an ear for languages and consume subtitled media regularly, and those who don't.

Also, I agree that the timing was perfect for those who missed mlm evak remakes, since it became available on Netflix so shortly after wtfock ended.

AHAHAHA YESSSSS oh my gosh i love the royal tenenbaums so much!! like my favourite wes film is either fantastic mr fox or rushmore, but yes!! grand budapest is rly pretty tho and i think that’s why so many people gravitate towards it yk? I DID WATCH BURNING actually i was super lucky and got to watch it at TIFF before it ‘officially’ premiered + there was a lil q&a with the cast and director (w a translator ehehe) but it absolutely blew me away. i’m just in love with korean cinema as a whole. i have yet to watch a korean film that i don’t like!!

little women is just !!!!!!! i love greta so much and i can’t wait to see what else she creates; i just feel like greta is a woman director creating films FOR WOMEN. does that make sense??? well-known women directors are already so sparse, but there are some (ie bigelow) who create uhhhhhh films that cater more towards men and the masses??? and that’s not to say that bigelow isn’t a fantastic director, because she IS, but i really like sofia coppola and greta gerwig because their films are so feminine and focused on feminine issues and relationships that we really don’t see on widespread/popular screens (like at first run theatres ie multiplexes).

Part 24

In a world full of Professional footballers and their demanding wives- can their football team nicknamed the ‘Cordonian Apples’ succeed? An American female physiotherapist joins the club. Will this cause issues with the footballers wives?

Fuck.

Running out of the bathroom, Riley knew exactly who it was- and she wasn’t going to stop until she confronted the woman.

“What are you doing here?”

“Oh, Riley. I do feel for you. Honestly I do. But I hope that you don’t fight this.”

“Take that back Kiara! What are you doing here anyway?” Drake snapped towards his ex.

“I’m paying my respect to my lover, who was murdered if you’ve forgotten. Both myself and Madeleine are here. Then I saw you run off Drake- I wanted to make sure that you was okay.” Moving closer towards him, she reached her arm out towards him- hoping to comfort him. However he dodged it, instead wrapping his arms around Riley’s waist.

“No, I’m not okay- but that is none of your concern. Don’t tell anyone what you overheard...”

“Drake.. I know how much Riley means to you. But I’m here still. I can heal you.” Fuck she said something similar in my dream.

“I’m still here you know! You never deserved someone like Drake!”

“Maybe not, but people change. As I said, I hope that you don’t fight this. I’m still here- and I’ll always be here. Along with your ex husbands money.. we can have a great future, Drake. Don’t worry I’ll keep your little secret, won’t be long until the press find out though...” Walking away with a smirk, Riley didn’t trust her one bit- Kiara would do anything and everything to ruin their relationship.

And that’s it- full time! Well done to the Apples, what a fantastic match.

“Shall we head up upstairs? I’ll quickly change before they all go to the changing room. I’ll meet you up there.” Riley just nodded, knowing that going upstairs was about to be like entering a battlefield.

Arriving upstairs, there were the usual familiar faces- the other WAGS. Then there was Kiara and Madeleine smirking, as if neither had done anything wrong in the past. They shouldn’t be there. They had no right to be there. They were ex partners. Not part of the ‘team’ anymore. Joining Olivia at the bar, Riley ordered a double whiskey. Ever since her cancer diagnosis she had avoided alcohol- but due to her run in with Kiara prior she needed it for Dutch courage.

“Woah, slow down.. what’s the matter with you?” Olivia asked, looking at her concerned. Ordering another, she really didn’t care what anyone thought anymore.

“Kiara and Madeleine are here. Kiara knows something about me. She’s not going to stop.”

“What does she know? Just ignore them. They’ll soon be booted out of here.”

“It doesn’t matter....”

“I killed your husband for you, if there’s something on your mind you can talk to me...”

“Kiara wants Drake back. That’s all.” Partially lying, she didn’t want to disclose the other reasoning as to why she was upset with Kiara’s presence in the room.

“Well Kiara can go and fuck herself with a baguette. He’s yours, he’s smitten with you. Don’t ever allow that French talking moron to steal him from you.” But one day I’m not going to be here, Riley thought to herself. Feeling familiar arms go around her waist, she was going to cherish every moment with Drake from now on.

Bertrand provided a short speech regarding the deaths of Constantine and Xavier. Even though deep down he didn’t want to as he was aware of their true personalities he felt the need to. To prove to the press that the club were fully ‘heartbroken’ about the news. Clearing his throat he quickly changed the subject, the club had some positive news to share.

“Before the chairman passed away, he was in the process of signing two new players to join our club. Since his passing, I completed these contracts with the support of; the head of recruitment, head of performance and analysis as well as the chief scout. I am pleased to announce that the two men who will be joining us will be arriving tomorrow. You may all know one of them, Neville Vancouver....”

“Who’s neville Vancouver?” Riley whispered in Leo’s ear.

“Trust me, you don’t want to know. He thinks he’s better than the rest of us. We played against his team last year, he has some beef with Drake. We don’t know why. He is always determined to break Drakes leg. I think it’s because Drake doesn’t have family who played professional football prior to him.”

“He sounds a snobby arsehole...” Leo high fived her. If his father wasn’t already dead, he potentially would be now. This news would never go down well with the team.

“The second player hasn’t played for Cordonian team before, so it’s a big change for him. I hope that you all make him feel welcome. Riley, you may know him....” Riley’s eyes widened, panic started running through he veins- wondering why she would know him.

“His name is Olivier Berger...”

“Fuck!” Not knowing how loudly that word slipped out, she soon had an audience as Bertrand continued talking about the mans career.

“Fuck?” Drake and Leo questioned her.

“Olivier played alongside Xavier in Manchester....”

“So why is that bad?”

“He’s the reason Xavier ....” Feeling like she couldn’t breathe, flashbacks from her past soon entered her mind.

“He’s one of the reasons that arsehole hurt my sister! Riley helped him recover from an injury and Olivier was forever grateful for her saving his career. That was all. Nothing more but Xavier became jealous.” Without fully elaborating, the gentlemen knew exactly what Lindsey was referring to. The abuse that Riley had received due to Xavier’s jealousy.

“Well it’ll be nice for him to have a friendly face when he arrives.” Drake said in a positive manner. Encouraging her not to worry about it.

“To end this speech, I’d just like to thank you all for putting in so much effort in today’s match. Even with the little disturbance from you Walker. Carry on putting one hundred per cent.....” Bertrand paused his speech as his phone began ringing along with a few notifications. Declining the call he read the notifications- his eyes widened before locking eyes with Riley. Suddenly an echo of gasps surrounded the room.

“Riley?” Bertrand managed to croak out, leading all eyes to land in her direction. Drake could feel Riley’s grip become tighter. Liam and Leo pulled her in for a tight hug, now she knew what was happening. Drake left her side. Not that he wanted to. Storming towards Kiara and Madeleine, they both fluttered their eyelashes towards him.

“Drake I’m so sorry to read about this...” Madeleine expressed in a fake sorrowful tone of voice before smirking.

“How could you do this Kiara?” Kiara pulled him to the side.

“I didn’t. I may have in a way threatened to do it but I would never do that. She’s dying anyway, so I just needed to be patient to win you back.”

“You and I were the only people who knew. So do explain to me how the press know the minute you found out?” Focusing her gaze towards her friend, Madeleine raised her drink into the air whilst winking. This was all the proof Drake needed. Somehow the witch knew. And exposed it. Still not trusting Kiara’s words, he decided to turn his anger towards the blonde. Kiara grabbed his arm, forcing him to face her. Caressing his cheek, she provided him with a soft smile as he tried to force his body away from her. Pulling him closer to her, she placed her lips on to his- keeping a tight grip on him.

“I love you, Drake. I’m always going to be here. I wouldn’t hurt you again.” Drake stood still, in shock that she would pull a stunt like this.

“Riley! Wait!” Pushing Kiara off of him, he saw all of his team mates run after Riley as the door slammed shut.

“Get the fuck out of my life, Kiara!”

Drake kept calling and texting Riley but there was no answer. From his point of view he knew that she was in shock as the Rhys held her tight. Wishing it was him instead. Wishing that he had stayed comforting her rather than demanding the truth from his ex. Instead Kiara forced a kiss up on his lips, and Madeleine was back with her cunning plans. Causing trouble as she always did.

Arriving home, he hoped that she was there. That hope soon disappeared. Heading straight to her apartment, he had the press following his every move. No luck there either. Trying each of his team mates houses, no one had seen or heard from her.

Entering the cabin alone, he was worried for her welfare and state of mind. He kept trying to contract her, losing his mind. He hoped that she would return on her own accord.

“He’s gone. You can come out now.”

“Thank you for covering for me.”

“He’s going to be losing his mind! Explain to us everything. Now!”

“Yes, I have cancer. I’m having an operation in a couple of weeks time. I didn’t want to worry anyone...so I didn’t want it to become public knowledge until after the op. Kiara overheard us discuss it. She’s the one that went to the press....” Breaking down in tears, her two friends comforted her as best as they could.

“And then he kissed her...” Barely speaking the words out- she felt as if her world had come crashing down in an instant.

“He wouldn’t kiss her on his own accord. It seemed like it was forced.”

“He’s a man, why couldn’t he push her away? If he loved me, he would have stayed with me. Stayed away from her.”

The two of them looked concerned at each other, Drake was a man who couldn’t defend himself against Kiara’s abuse for years. If a stranger looked at her, she looked innocent and sweet- possibly gave the impression of being the doting girlfriend. But she wasn’t.

“You need to talk to him. Let him know that you’re safe at least.”

“I will do. At some point. I promise. I won’t be a burden for you both.”

Two weeks later, Riley was at hospital preparing for her operation. She had stayed at her friends house, but refused to see Drake. Speaking to him on the phone, the conversations hit a dead end- he had insisted on coming to see her just to make sure that she was okay. However, she refused. Just saying that she will see him after her operation. In those two weeks, he kept himself to himself- whilst trying to hunt Madeleine down. To question her about her actions, to ask what benefitted her from doing this.

Arriving at the hospital, he demanded to know where Riley was- Lindsey had text him confirming that she was having the operation today.

“Mr Walker, you can’t see her just yet. I’ll let her know that you are here when she comes out of recovery.”

“That’s not good enough! Please... I just need to see her. Even if it’s for a minute.” Unlike Leo, he didn’t like to use his money for bribery- but in this situation, anything was worth a try.

“Right this way, Mr Walker.” Following the receptionist, she introduced him to the theatre nurse in charge. Knowing that they were going against hospital policies and procedures- the nurse led Drake into the room.

“What are you doing here?” Wondering why the staff would allow him to enter the room, whilst she laid down having her cannula inserted.

“I told you that I was going to be here every step...I’m going to hold your hand until you fall asleep, and I’m going to be here when you wake up.”

“Ki... Kia.. Kiara...” Seeing the anaesthetic quickly work its magic, he knew he had to be quick with his words.

“She forced that kiss upon me... I love you, Riley. We are going to get through this together- we are soulmates, you came in to my life for a reason. We are going to have a baby once this is over. I’m going to continue to play, to provide for the two of us...Madeleine was the one that went to the press, I assume anyway. Please don’t shut me out. I know that you’re upset, we didn’t plan for it to come out the way it did. But I’m here, always.”

“Dr.. Drake...” Forcing his hand off of hers, she may be half asleep but her brain was still fully functioning for the moment. Forcing her hand back into his, he kissed it softly. Letting it linger there.

“Marry me Riley...”
