Documents that detail Waltham triple murder and possible Tamerlan Tsarnaev connection to be released - masslive.com
Documents that include information about a 2011 triple murder in Waltham — and its possible ties to the Boston Marathon bombing — could be made public soon.
Axios Boston reports that Secretary of State William Galvin’s Office is reviewing documents from the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office that detail the 2011 murder of three Waltham men — 37-year-old Raphael Teken, 25-year-old Brendan Mess and 31-year-old Erik Weissman.
The documents could offer insight into Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s possible involvement in the three men’s murders and whether or not the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing could have been prevented, Axios reported.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev is the older brother of Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who is facing the death penalty following his conviction on 30 charges in connection with the bombing, including using a weapon of mass destruction.
In 2019, federal documents were unsealed and showed that a friend of Tamerlan Tsarnaev told investigators that he and Tamerlan Tsarnaev killed three people in Waltham and tried to clean the crime scene to “remove traces of their fingerprints.”
Those details were included in a search warrant affidavit that was unsealed in a Boston federal court in connection with the case involving Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
The three men were found slain inside 12 Harding Ave. in Waltham on Sept. 11, 2011. The men had been bound, beaten and had their throats cut.
Ibragim Todashev was interviewed by law enforcement on May 21, 2013, in Florida six days after the bombings.
“Todashev confessed that he and Tamerlan participated in the Waltham murders,” the affidavit said. “He said that he and Tamerlan had agreed initially just to rob the victims, whom they knew to be drug dealers who sold marijuana.”
Todashev said he and Tamerlan Tsarnaev took several thousands of dollars from the residence and split the money.
“Tamerlan decided that they should eliminate any witnesses to the crime, and then Todashev and Tamerlan bound the victims, who were ultimately murdered,” the affidavit said.
The two men then spent more than an hour cleaning the crime scene and attempting to remove evidence.
Todashev was shot and killed by a Boston FBI agent sometime during the interrogation. Authorities said Todashev tried to attack the agent. The agent was later cleared in the shooting.
Authorities were looking to search a 1999 Honda CR-V that investigators said Tamerlan Tsarnaev and Todashev used to go to and from the Waltham crime scene. Investigators were searching for “blood, DNA, trace evidence, and other items” inside the vehicle that would tie the two men to the Waltham killing.
Earlier this year, Hulu released a true-crime documentary series that dove into discoveries made regarding a potential relationship between the Waltham triple-homicide case of 2011 and the Boston Marathon bombing of 2013.
“The Murders Before the Marathon” series showcased investigative journalist Susan Zalkind’s work to uncover possible hidden truths behind the triple murder case.
To this day, no one has been charged in the brutal triple murder.
On April 15, 2013, Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev placed two homemade pressure-cooker bombs at the marathon finish line. The explosives killed three people — Krystle Campbell, Lingzi Lu, and Martin Richard, who was just 8 years old at the time. Hundreds more were injured, some losing limbs. Three days later, after pictures of the brothers were released by federal investigators, the pair shot Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer Sean Collier and kidnapped a local resident in the officer’s car, before engaging gunfire with police in Watertown.
Tamerlan was killed during the shootout with police after he was shot multiple times and then run over by Dzhokhar as the younger Tsarnaev escaped in a car. Dzhokhar eluded authorities, setting off a manhunt that ended in his capture in Watertown.
According to Axios Boston, Galvin’s supervisor of records should have a decision on which documents — and what information will be redacted — by Dec. 6.

The Next Generation 2023 Toyota RAV4 Reviews
2023 Toyota RAV4 Year after year, the Toyota RAV4 has become one of the best-selling SUVs on the market. Toyota's reputation for reliability is certainly closely linked to its success. But we also commend this small SUV for its spacious interior, comfortable ride, and easy-to-use technological features.
There are also a variety of trim levels available to suit your budget or interests. The RAV4 TRD Off-Road trim, for example, is one of the few models in its class to offer increased off-road capability through all-terrain tires and special suspension changes.
There is a high possibility that the Toyota RAV4 2023 will undergo some changes. This generation RAV4 is debuting back in 2019, and 2023 looks like a possible year for some updates. At the moment, we don't have any official information from Toyota, but we wouldn't be surprised if Toyota made some minor styling updates, added some new features, and revised the availability of standard and optional features. We will update our review once we know more.
However, we don't expect this change to dramatically improve the Toyota RAV4's standing among other small SUVs. It's certainly the preferred SUV, but we found competitors like the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and Nissan Rogue to be the better choices.

With 9M CR-Vs sold globally, Honda debuts its CR-V Hybrid
The Honda CR-V has an incredible record of global sales. More than 9 million CR-Vs have been sold worldwide in 150 countries since ’95. In the USA, a total of 384,168 CR-Vs were sold in 2019 alone (wheelsjoint.com). In the SUV market, it ranks second only to the Toyota RAV4.
By John Coulter, CURRENT EV CMO
Launched in Japan in 1995, the CR-V became one of the pioneer models of what has become the highly popular Compact SUV segment. It quickly established itself as a favorite with customers looking for a sturdy, reliable vehicle with low maintenance costs.
The core of the vehicle’s popularity is its combination of efficiency, functionality, simple style, safety and legendary Honda quality. The average estimate for repair bills for the first and second years is $0! The average maintenance cost for the first year of driving is $190.
Depreciation is minimal as well, accounting for only 10.582% its first year and 8.88% its second year.
The 2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid crossover retains the same basic design and features as its 2020 predecessor. Few changes have been implemented, as 2020 was the year when the CR-V received its 4th Generation makeover and the hybrid version debuted. The 2021 hybrid uses a 2.0L 4-cylinder Atkinson Cycle engine mated with 2 electric motors and a small 1.4kWh battery. Together, they generate 212hp and 232 lb-ft of torque, and provide what is considered the best engine performance in its segment.
With a 0 to 60 sprint of 7.5 seconds, it is not what any reviewer would call a fast car. But what its drivers like is its linear power delivery; it has no gears to shift, making the drive incredibly smooth. And the vehicle’s torque output of 232 lb-ft with its gas engine and two electric motors working bests the Ford Escape Hybrid and the Toyota RAV 4 Hybrid, its two closest competitors. Rather than a super fast family hauler, it’s a comfy city cruiser which gets you where you want to go, smoothly, safely and inexpensively.
Fuel Economy is excellent. The EPA estimates the 2021 CR-V will provide you with 40mpg city, 35mpg highway and 38 combined. The hybrid’s total range is 440 miles.
There are 4 CR-V trims: Hybrid LX (MSRP: $27,850); Hybrid EX (MSRP: $30,360); Hybrid EX-L (MSRP: $32,850); and Hybrid Touring (MSRP: $36,050).
Hybrid LX features include: Real Time AWD; Honda Sensing; an Easy Fold-Down 60/40 Split Rear Seatback; a Power Flow Monitor; ECON, Sport and EV Drive Modes; a Multi-Angle Rearview Camera; LED Headlights with Auto-On/Off; Smart Entry with Walk Away Auto Lock; Auto High-Beam Headlights; an Automatic Climate Control System; Push Button Start; a Retractable Cargo Area Cover; a 160-Watt Audio System with 4 Speakers; Bluetooth HandsFreeLink; USB Audio Interface; Pandora Compatibility; Remote Entry System; Idle-Stop.
Hybrid EX includes all Hybrid LX features, plus: Blind Spot Information (BSI) System with Cross Traffic Monitor; Dual-Zone Automatic Climate Control System; Apple CarPlay Integration; Android Auto Integration; Heated Front Seats; a 12-Way Power-Adjustable Driver’s Seat; One-Touch Power Moonroof with Tilt Feature; 7-Inch Display Audio Touch-Screen; 180-Watt Audio System with 6 Speakers; SiriusXM® Radio; HD Radio; SMS Text Message Function; Rear Privacy Glass; HondaLink; Heated Power Side Mirrors Including Integrated Indicators; Auto High-Beam Headlights; LED Fog Lights; a Security System.
Hybrid EX-L includes all Hybrid LX and EX features, plus: a Leather-Trimmed Interior; a Power Tailgate; a Heated Steering Wheel; Automatic-Dimming Rearview Mirror; a Two-Position Memory Driver’s Seat; a Front Passenger’s Seat with 4-Way Power Adjustment; a 180-Watt Audio System with 8 Speakers; Ambient Lighting; HomeLink Remote System.
Hybrid Touring includes all Hybrid LX, EX and EX-L features, plus: a Hands-Free Access Power Tailgate; a Wireless Phone Charger; 19-Inch Alloy Wheels; Parking Sensors; Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System; Turn-By-Turn Directions; Roof Rails; 330-Watt Premium Audio System with 9 Speakers; Rain-Sensing Windshield Wipers.
The CR-V offers one of the largest cargo bays in its segment, with 39.2ft3 of cargo space. Car & Driver reviewers managed to fit 10 carry-on sized suitcases behind the rear seat. With seats folded down, the Honda CR-V Hybrid offers best-in-class luggage space.
In 2020, the CR-V earned a 5-star crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and it was named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), The Honda also comes standard with a suite of driver assistance technology which includes: standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking; standard lane-keeping assist and lane-departure warning; standard adaptive cruise control.

2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Review
When we first reviewed the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid back in 2018, it was the only game in town if you wanted a compact crossover hybrid. In 2021, the car has a lot more competition, particularly from the Honda CR-V, the traditional compact crossover segment leader that last year became available for the first time as a hybrid. Luckily for Toyota, the RAV4 saw a complete redesign in 2019, delivering…

Some of the best cars for snow driving available on BidGoDrive.com
“Baby, It's Cold Outside ” plays (in the background) as you watch cars slide all over the ice and crash into each other, folks are skidding through red lights left and right, and everybody is ice skating in their cars, even when they don’t want to be. It’s finally snowing. You don’t have to be one of those people, but how? We can help!!
Honda’s compact crossover, the CR-V, has been in production since 1995 and is currently in its fifth generation. CR-V stands for comfortable runabout vehicle, but it was termed as a compact recreational vehicle in a British car review that was then republished by Honda. With an optional third row of seats that can fit up to 7, the standard AWD version puts out 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque through a 1.5 liter turbocharged I4 engine. Older versions are available with a 2.4 liter, naturally aspirated engine that puts out 184 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque. The NHTSA gave the Honda CR-V 5/5 stars for its overall safety rating, so it’ll keep you and your family safe when you head through the snow with a ground clearance of 7.8 inches to avoid getting bogged down. You can get it as a hybrid in 2020, too.
The Toyota RAV4 is arguably the aforementioned CR-V’s biggest competitor. Introduced in Japan and Europe in 1994 and in North America in 1996, the RAV4 started off putting out 119 horsepower. The 2019 gas-powered RAV4 now puts out 203 horsepower, while the hybrid version puts out 219. While both come standard with FWD, all trims have AWD available making them perfect for driving in the snow. 2019 AWD iterations have a new feature: Rear Drive Disconnect. That means that only the front wheels are powered when AWD isn’t necessary, improving fuel economy for models that are equipped with AWD. The 2019 Toyota RAV4, like the CR-V, got 5/5 stars for its safety rating as well, making it an excellent contender for mountain trips with the family, or just commuting to work when nobody else seems to be able to because of the snow with an impressive 8.4 inches of ground clearance.
Subaru Outback is one of Subaru’s most reliable models, and now in its sixth generation as of 2020. The standard Boxer engine puts out 182 horsepower, 176 lb-ft of torque, and comes with Auto Start-Stop Technology for better fuel economy around town. Equipped with standard AWD and a ground clearance of 8.7 inches making it ideal for snow driving, the Subaru Outback also earned a 5/5 safety rating from the NHTSA. Spacious, comfortable, and with excellent off-road capabilities, you won’t get stuck anywhere in a Subaru Outback.
It’s no surprise that Subaru holds two spots on this list, as they’re known for their sporty and outdoorsy nature. If you’re looking for something a little bit bigger than an Outback, Subaru’s crossover-SUV is a fantastic choice. Originally the XV Crosstrek, as of 2016 the Subaru Crosstrek has become its own entity. Every trim comes equipped with AWD, and the gas-fed iterations put out 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. The Crosstrek is also available as a plug-in hybrid, which puts out 137 hp and 134 lb-ft of torque. All variations come with Active Torque Vectoring and Traction Control Systems for the best experience in the worst conditions. As with all the other vehicles on this list, the Crosstrek got a 5/5 star safety rating from the NHTSA, so you and your family will be taken care of during the winter months. Those 5 vehicles are our top picks for winter and snow driving. Be it to the mountain or just to work, you want to make sure you’re commuting safely. With top safety ratings and excellent capability in inclement weather, those cars are sure to make winter life much easier. If none of the vehicles on this list suit your requirements or style, we have lots of other options available. Happy holidays, be safe!

Family Resemblance: What Is the Difference Between the GMC Terrain and Acadia?
GMC vehicles are known for their rugged designs and premium interiors (in Denali trim). And you can get one for a reasonable price, especially if you’re looking at the Terrain and Acadia crossovers. What is the difference between the GMC Terrain and Acadia? Find out how the two crossovers stack up in this GMC Terrain vs. Acadia comparison.
Which Is Bigger?
GMC’s smallest crossover is the Terrain. As a compact crossover, the Terrain is sized similarly to the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, and it seats five people. The GMC Acadia is a midsize SUV that seats up to seven people. You can compare it to the likes of the Toyota Highlander.
Since it’s a larger vehicle, the Acadia boasts more cargo volume than the Terrain. Max cargo capacity reaches 79 cubic feet in the Acadia, compared to 63.3 cubic feet in the Terrain. Behind the second row, the Terrain has 29.6 cubic feet of space, versus the Acadia’s 41.7 cubic feet. There is only 12.8 cubic feet of space behind the Acadia’s third row should you decide to keep all the seats up.
Surprisingly, the Terrain and Acadia offer an identical 39.7 inches of legroom in the second row. In past reviews, we’ve praised both models for giving second-row passengers plenty of room to stretch out. If you opt for the Acadia, know that legroom in the third row drops to 31.1 inches.
Which Is More Powerful?
The Acadia offers more power. An available 3.6-liter V-6 engine makes a potent 310 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque. There are two other engine choices on the Acadia: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 193 hp and 188 lb-ft and a 2.0-liter turbo-four with 230 hp and 258 lb-ft.
Meanwhile, the Terrain is available with two engines. The first is a 1.5-liter turbo-four with 170 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque, and the second is a 2.0-liter turbo-four with 252 hp and 260 lb-ft.
Just because the Terrain is less powerful doesn’t mean it’s slow. In fact, expect little variation in acceleration between the Terrain and Acadia on potent models. We clocked a 2018 GMC Terrain with the 2.0-liter turbo-four engine reaching 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds. That puts it about on par with a V-6-powered 2017 GMC Terrain we tested at 6.7 seconds.
Which Is More Efficient?
The Terrain is the more fuel-efficient choice. Fuel economy tops out at 27 mpg combined when paired with front-wheel drive and the smaller 1.5-liter engine. In contrast, the most efficient Acadia nets 24 mpg. This figure applies to Acadia’s equipped with front-drive and the 2.0-liter engine. Check out the fuel economy differences below.
GMC Terrain vs. Acadia fuel economy ratings:
2020 GMC Terrain FWD (1.5L) – 26/30/27 mpg
2020 GMC Terrain AWD (1.5L) – 25/28/26 mpg
2020 GMC Terrain FWD (2.0L) – 22/28/24 mpg
2020 GMC Terrain AWD (2.0L) – 21/26/23 mpg
2020 GMC Acadia FWD (2.0L) – 21/28/24 mpg
2020 GMC Acadia AWD (2.0L) – 21/27/23 mpg
2020 GMC Acadia FWD (2.5L) – 21/27/23 mpg
2020 GMC Acadia FWD (3.6L) – 19/27/22 mpg
2020 GMC Acadia AWD (3.6L) – 18/25/21 mpg
Which Is Safer?
Both vehicles perform well in crash tests. The 2020 GMC Terrain received an overall five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The agency hasn’t released full results for the 2020 Acadia, but the 2019 version earned four stars when equipped with front-wheel drive and five stars when equipped with all-wheel drive.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) also issues crash test ratings. Both the 2020 Terrain and 2019 Acadia scored “Good” in all crash tests, although the vehicles’ headlight ratings prevented them from earning Top Safety Pick status.
Which Is More Capable?
When it comes to the GMC Terrain vs. Acadia question, it’s natural to wonder how these SUVs stack up in terms of off-road capability and towing. Let’s start with Terrain: It’s capable in off-road situations thanks to the Traction Select system with different drive modes. The Acadia also offers this feature. Although not a hardcore off-roader, the Acadia AT4 model is the choice for driving off the beaten path, as it receives special features like all-terrain tires that perform well in the mud. The Terrain can tow up to 3,500 pounds, while the Acadia can tow up to 4,000 pounds.
Which Is Cheaper?
You guessed it—the smaller Terrain is less expensive. The 2020 GMC Terrain is priced from $26,195, while the 2020 GMC Acadia starts at $30,195. The price difference can get a lot higher, though. If you’re looking for an opulent Denali model, the Terrain version goes from $39,495 while the Acadia will cost you at least $46,695. GMC often offers incentives on the Terrain and Acadia.
Which Is Better?
So which is better: the GMC Terrain or Acadia? For bigger families that can use a third row for transporting kids, the Acadia is the obvious choice. This model also has the distinction of boasting more cargo space than the Terrain, and offering slightly increased towing capacity. But consumers who want the best fuel economy or price may want to veer toward the Terrain.
What Is the Difference Between the GMC Terrain and Acadia?
The Acadia is bigger
The Acadia has an available V-6
The Terrain is more efficient
Both have good safety ratings
The Acadia has a more capable AT4 trim
The Terrain is cheaper starting at $26,195
The Acadia has three rows of seats, making it the family choice

The Top 10 Value-Retaining Vehicles
Whether it’s a sedan or a truck, finding a used vehicle with strong resale value is key. We looked at 2015-18 models and found 10 vehicles to consider. Sedan/Hatchback The Mazda3 has competitive value retention, which helped it earn the #1 spot for the compact sedan/hatchback category in the 2019 Best Used Car Awards. In fact, reviewers gave the 2015 and 2017 models high marks for Cost-Effectiveness. And another benefit: 2014-18 Mazda3s have few recalls, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Toyota Corolla is another great option if you’re looking for a sedan that can hold its value. It took the top spot for used compact sedans for the 2018 Best Used Car Awards. The 2012-18 models were able to hold their value nearly 29% better than competitors. The reviewers were big fans of the 2016 model, giving it a 9/10 for Cost-Effectiveness, noting that it’s one of the most affordable cars in its class. The 2016 model, along with the 2015, has zero recalls, according to NHTSA. Compact/Midsize SUV
If you’re looking for a midsize crossover that offers a manual option, can go off-road, and can also stand out in the sea of competitors, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has you covered. The 2007-17 Wrangler Unlimited rose from second place to first for the 2018 Best Used Car Awards, and it maintained its status for the 2019 awards. NHTSA has issued only two recalls for the 2015 model. Need something that feels more at home on the highway? Look to the compact Honda CR-V. When the redesigned 2017 model came out, our reviewer wrote, “This is a vehicle of substance and unconventional beauty, and you should buy one. Case closed.” Not only did the CR-V score well for our reviewer on Cost-Effectiveness, but it also scored a 9/10 for Form & Function, thanks in part to having plenty of cargo space. The 2017 CR-V has three recalls, including one for the steering. Full-Size SUV
The fourth-generation Ford Expedition, a full-size SUV, introduced a few new changes, including an updated interior and sleek updated look. The 2018 model earned the #1 spot for value, rising from the #4 spot the previous year. The reviewers also gave it a 10/10 for both Performance and Form & Function. While NHTSA gave the 2018 Expedition a 5-star overall rating, it did find a handful of recalls related to the powertrain and fuel system. The Chevrolet Traverse is another great choice. It can hold up to eight passengers and still have plenty of room for cargo, making it a car that can grow with your family. It was one of the top 3 choices for the 2018 Best Used Car Awards and took the #1 spot for value for 2017 models, according to the user rankings, earning a 9.4/10. The 2017 model has no outstanding recalls, according to NHTSA. Midsize Truck
The data shows that the Toyota Tacoma, a midsize truck, can retain up to 66% of its original value 12 years after purchase. Since the 2015 model was the last before a major redesign, it’s no surprise that reviewers gave the 2015 Tacoma an 8/10 rating for Cost-Effectiveness, a boost from the 2013 model. The Tacoma also took first place for midsize trucks for the 2019 Best Used Car Awards. NHTSA reports just four recalls on the 2015 Tacoma. The Nissan Titan is another option. After its 2016 redesign, the Titan became the #1 choice for reviewers for 2016-2018, giving it a 9.5/10 for Value all three years. NHTSA has issued just two recalls for the 2018 Titan. Wagon
It’s no secret why so many shoppers love Subaru, particularly the Outback. It maintains high resale value, making it the winner for the wagon category for the 2019 Best Used Car Awards. The 2016 model gets a 9/10 for Cost-Effectiveness and an 8/10 for Performance. Want a slightly newer Outback? The 2018 maintains its 9/10 score for Cost-Effectiveness. NHTSA issued three recalls for the 2016 Outback. For a sportier option, turn your sights toward the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen. The 2015-18 SportWagen takes the #2 slot for the 2019 Best Used Car Awards, and reviewers noted that “no better blend of practicality, cargo space, and road-going manners exists on the market today” than the 2016 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen. The 2016 model has the fewest recalls of the used SportWagens, with just one. DM us for details @bidgodrive - 💻 www.bidgodrive.com - ☎ +1 201-378-3121 - 📧 [email protected] Read the full article

New Santa Fe leads the way for Hyundai
The 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe from Group 1 Hyundai replaces the five-passenger Santa Fe Sport. The seven-passenger 2018 version of the Santa Fe is now renamed as the Santa Fe XL, and a new eight-passenger “full-size” model will be making an appearance soon as the Palisade. The name Hyundai stands for modernity in the Korean language, and according to the vehicle maker this “H-Factor” is the word that represents the all-new Santa Fe accurately.
Hyundai is on the offence, unleashing multiple new products all within a span of just a couple of years.
In fact, with so many new models arriving, it can be hard to keep track of them all. There are no less than six new or redesigned SUVs already introduced or coming out in the next few years. Of these, the most significant entry is the all-new Hyundai 7-seater - the 2019 Santa Fe.
Design
Hyundai is the only global automaker to manufacture their own steel and use it in a framework they refer to as the “Superstructure.” This features structural adhesives placed strategically to protect critical areas for passengers, making it safer overall in the case of an accident. In addition, the 2019 Santa Fe now boasts such things as multi-link suspension setup, a stiffer body, and improved chassis all around. This results in a confident, sturdy ride that is fitting for this SUV.
The IIHS gives the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe a Top Safety Pick + rating, but only if you choose a trim other than the base level. This is due to the inclusion of Hyundai SmartSense safety technology that is standard on all but the base model. The SmartSense safety includes the forward Collision-Avoidance, Lane Keep Assist, and Driver Attention Warning, to name the key items.
Two new safety features that are worth mentioning are the Rear Occupant Alert and the world’s first Safe Exit Assist. The Rear Occupant Alert will let the driver know if he or she leaves the vehicle and has left a child or pet in the back seat. The system will make a noise by sounding the horn and also send a message to the owner’s smartphone.
Safe Exit Assist will alert the driver by keeping the door locked if they attempt to open the door in an unsafe situation, such as the presence of an upcoming motorcycle, car, or bicycle approaching from the rear.
The interior feels roomy and airy due to a lower placed dashboard and larger windows, and quality materials add flair to the already functional display. The Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on this model (Toyota, are you listening?). Other notable changes are roomier interior and a larger cargo capacity, which by the way, is accessed with a power lift gate (the cargo capacity is 2,019 litres with the seats folded flat and 1,016 litres with the seats up). All passengers can enjoy and travel in comfort with a generous amount of head, leg and shoulder room in this Hyundai.
Performance
There are two engine options available with the all-new Santa Fe. The standard, carried over 2.4-litre GDI engine produces 185 horsepower and 178 foot-pounds of torque. The better engine option is a 2.0-litre turbocharged GDI that produces 235 h.p. and 260 foot-pounds torque. Both options come with an eight-speed automatic transmission and an optional HTRAC All-Wheel Drive upgrade.
The 2.0-litre turbo four is much quicker than the base 2.4-litre non-turbo, hitting 100 kilometres per hour a few seconds earlier. The turbo four is smooth, quiet and highly refined, and its ample power makes you think that you might be driving an SUV with a V-6 engine.
The handling is well balanced and predictable, and the brakes feel more than adequate. The Santa Fe strikes a good balance between firmer, sportier German competitors such as the Audi Q5 and the softer, family-car style Japanese models like the Toyota RAV4. When compared directly face-to-face, however, the Honda CR-V still delivers better road character and the all-new Toyota RAV4 may also prove to be a formidable competitor.
Fuel economy for the 2.4-litre engine and front-wheel drive is 10.7/8.2/9.6 litres/100 kilometres for city/highway/combined, and 11.2/8.7/10.1 l/100 km if you choose all-wheel drive. For the upgraded 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, fuel economy is estimated to be 12.3/9.8/11.2 l/100 km.
Summary
In Canada, the 2019 Santa Fe comes in four trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Luxury, and Ultimate. I would recommend the Preferred trim and up, purely because none of the safety features beyond airbags and anti-lock brakes are included with the base level Essential trim.
Hyundai offers one of the best-backed five-year warranties on offer in Canada, which is another perk that may sweeten the deal for potential buyers.
