With 9M CR-Vs sold globally, Honda debuts its CR-V Hybrid
The Honda CR-V has an incredible record of global sales. More than 9 million CR-Vs have been sold worldwide in 150 countries since ’95. In the USA, a total of 384,168 CR-Vs were sold in 2019 alone (wheelsjoint.com). In the SUV market, it ranks second only to the Toyota RAV4.
By John Coulter, CURRENT EV CMO
Launched in Japan in 1995, the CR-V became one of the pioneer models of what has become the highly popular Compact SUV segment. It quickly established itself as a favorite with customers looking for a sturdy, reliable vehicle with low maintenance costs.
The core of the vehicle’s popularity is its combination of efficiency, functionality, simple style, safety and legendary Honda quality. The average estimate for repair bills for the first and second years is $0! The average maintenance cost for the first year of driving is $190.
Depreciation is minimal as well, accounting for only 10.582% its first year and 8.88% its second year.
The 2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid crossover retains the same basic design and features as its 2020 predecessor. Few changes have been implemented, as 2020 was the year when the CR-V received its 4th Generation makeover and the hybrid version debuted. The 2021 hybrid uses a 2.0L 4-cylinder Atkinson Cycle engine mated with 2 electric motors and a small 1.4kWh battery. Together, they generate 212hp and 232 lb-ft of torque, and provide what is considered the best engine performance in its segment.
With a 0 to 60 sprint of 7.5 seconds, it is not what any reviewer would call a fast car. But what its drivers like is its linear power delivery; it has no gears to shift, making the drive incredibly smooth. And the vehicle’s torque output of 232 lb-ft with its gas engine and two electric motors working bests the Ford Escape Hybrid and the Toyota RAV 4 Hybrid, its two closest competitors. Rather than a super fast family hauler, it’s a comfy city cruiser which gets you where you want to go, smoothly, safely and inexpensively.
Fuel Economy is excellent. The EPA estimates the 2021 CR-V will provide you with 40mpg city, 35mpg highway and 38 combined. The hybrid’s total range is 440 miles.
There are 4 CR-V trims: Hybrid LX (MSRP: $27,850); Hybrid EX (MSRP: $30,360); Hybrid EX-L (MSRP: $32,850); and Hybrid Touring (MSRP: $36,050).
Hybrid LX features include: Real Time AWD; Honda Sensing; an Easy Fold-Down 60/40 Split Rear Seatback; a Power Flow Monitor; ECON, Sport and EV Drive Modes; a Multi-Angle Rearview Camera; LED Headlights with Auto-On/Off; Smart Entry with Walk Away Auto Lock; Auto High-Beam Headlights; an Automatic Climate Control System; Push Button Start; a Retractable Cargo Area Cover; a 160-Watt Audio System with 4 Speakers; Bluetooth HandsFreeLink; USB Audio Interface; Pandora Compatibility; Remote Entry System; Idle-Stop.
Hybrid EX includes all Hybrid LX features, plus: Blind Spot Information (BSI) System with Cross Traffic Monitor; Dual-Zone Automatic Climate Control System; Apple CarPlay Integration; Android Auto Integration; Heated Front Seats; a 12-Way Power-Adjustable Driver’s Seat; One-Touch Power Moonroof with Tilt Feature; 7-Inch Display Audio Touch-Screen; 180-Watt Audio System with 6 Speakers; SiriusXM® Radio; HD Radio; SMS Text Message Function; Rear Privacy Glass; HondaLink; Heated Power Side Mirrors Including Integrated Indicators; Auto High-Beam Headlights; LED Fog Lights; a Security System.
Hybrid EX-L includes all Hybrid LX and EX features, plus: a Leather-Trimmed Interior; a Power Tailgate; a Heated Steering Wheel; Automatic-Dimming Rearview Mirror; a Two-Position Memory Driver’s Seat; a Front Passenger’s Seat with 4-Way Power Adjustment; a 180-Watt Audio System with 8 Speakers; Ambient Lighting; HomeLink Remote System.
Hybrid Touring includes all Hybrid LX, EX and EX-L features, plus: a Hands-Free Access Power Tailgate; a Wireless Phone Charger; 19-Inch Alloy Wheels; Parking Sensors; Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System; Turn-By-Turn Directions; Roof Rails; 330-Watt Premium Audio System with 9 Speakers; Rain-Sensing Windshield Wipers.
The CR-V offers one of the largest cargo bays in its segment, with 39.2ft3 of cargo space. Car & Driver reviewers managed to fit 10 carry-on sized suitcases behind the rear seat. With seats folded down, the Honda CR-V Hybrid offers best-in-class luggage space.
In 2020, the CR-V earned a 5-star crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and it was named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), The Honda also comes standard with a suite of driver assistance technology which includes: standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking; standard lane-keeping assist and lane-departure warning; standard adaptive cruise control.

Hybrid SUV Battle: 2020 Toyota RAV4 XSE vs. 2020 Honda CR-V Touring
Go ahead, splurge. Treat yourself to the best compact SUV in the showroom—just don’t let the hybrid badge surprise you. If that h-word provokes associations of stodgy, slow, compromise-mobiles, consider this: The 2020 Honda CR-V and 2020 Toyota RAV4 offer engine upgrades that deliver more responsiveness and efficiency than almost any SUV under $40,000. Oh, and you’ll retain the interior space you expect while traveling more than 100 miles longer between fuel stops. When it comes to having your cake and eating it, too, the hybrids of these segment-dominating rivals provide satisfying and guilt-free motoring. At the higher end of the segment, though, which is the best hybrid SUV—the CR-V Touring or the RAV4 XSE?
Which Hybrid SUV Is More Efficient? Are They Expensive?
The Toyota and Ford’s new Escape Hybrid win the race for data-obsessed buyers, with an excellent 40 mpg combined city/highway rating. But you’re reading MotorTrend, which means you understand there’s more to the picture than simply superb efficiency. It’s a good place to start, though, and the all-wheel-drive (AWD) Honda falls a tiny bit behind the others, with an EPA-rated 40/35 mpg to the AWD Toyota’s 41/38 mpg and the Ford’s 43–44/37 mpg (front-wheel drive and AWD). Our real-world results with the Toyota and Honda reflected the former’s advantage.
The Honda has a standard mechanical AWD system like the non-hybrid model. The Toyota, however, uses an electric motor at the rear axle instead of the conventional AWD system of other RAV4s.
Even if you’re only an environmentalist when Greenpeace volunteers are at the door, how would you like three extra days of commuting without stopping for gas? With the CR-V, upgrading from an AWD model to the AWD hybrid means 126 extra miles of range if you drive about as efficiently as the EPA’s estimates. The RAV4 hybrid extends driving range 145 to 174 miles, depending on the trim. One note—as of this writing, Toyota was working through an issue affecting an unknown number of 2019 and 2020 RAV4 Hybrids, in which a variation in the shape of the fuel tank may be impacting the car’s ability to get a full fill-up.
Enthusiasts of good deals can get behind these hybrids, too. Honda only charges $1,200 above the AWD non-hybrid trim, and Toyota has cut its hybrid premium to only $1,000 above AWD non-hybrid variants. That’s compelling. Depending on how and where you drive, paying off those premiums over the course of a five-year loan should be a cinch.
How They Drive … and a 2001 Prius
“Remarkably fun” was how testing director Kim Reynolds described the RAV4 XSE hybrid after he drove it at the limit on our figure-eight course, which evaluates braking, cornering, accelerating, and the transitions in between. Our RAV4 Hybrid tester hit 60 mph in just 7.1 seconds, beating the CR-V Hybrid’s 7.5 seconds, almost a full second quicker than our 2019 RAV4 XLE AWD long-termer, and about 6 seconds swifter than the original Prius. Not bad for a hybrid SUV only 1 mpg off that trailblazing hybrid sedan.
At a more relaxed pace, the RAV4 XSE Hybrid’s dynamics are solid but not quite as entertaining. “The steering on the Toyota feels more artificial and has less feedback,” MotorTrend en Español managing editor Miguel Cortina said after driving the Honda and Toyota. It’s more than just the steering, though.
The sport-tuned RAV4 XSE is less compliant than the CR-V, yet the Honda still feels fun for a sensible crossover. Reynolds preferred the RAV4’s dynamics on the track but spoke to what we discovered on the street: The Honda feels nimbler during casual driving. The CR-V also hands the RAV4 the title for quickest compact SUV hybrid in exchange for slightly more comfortable suspension and transmission tuning. There’s no right or wrong here; it’s more a matter of taste. If you want the ultimate in suspension compliance, go with the CR-V Touring Hybrid. But if the responsive Honda can’t quite match your lead-footed driving style, try the even more responsive and quicker RAV4 XSE.
Braking Performance and a Transmission Curiosity
So you’re thinking of going with the CR-V because a 0.4-second difference to 60 mph doesn’t faze you. OK, but before you end a CR-V Hybrid test drive, listen for the Honda’s motorboating transmission by applying moderate to maximum throttle. That occasional intrusion is the biggest reason the Insight wasn’t our 2019 Car of the Year, and for some it will sour an otherwise excellent driving experience. With my stop-and-eventually-go commute, I’d gladly accept the unconventional way the transmission lets the engine swell toward its power peak as a trade-off for smoothness.
Both SUVs have five-star safety scores from the NHTSA and are IIHS 2020 Top Safety Picks. The main difference: The Honda’s headlights are rated better (on average), but the Toyota’s LATCH setup is rated easier to use.
The CR-V regains its footing with fantastic brake feel, at least in everyday driving. In MotorTrend’s 60–0 mph panic stop testing , road test editor Chris Walton was surprised by the “huge delay between pedal pressing and actually slowing,” despite a 115-foot stop that beat the Toyota’s 120-foot performance. What delighted us on the street, however, was braking feel that felt more like a non-hybrid than almost any hybrid available today. The Toyota’s brakes feel almost normal to the end of the pedal’s travel, but the Honda is so good, some might not even realize it’s a hybrid. Cortina also appreciated the CR-V’s braking-regen paddle shifters.
“They almost work for one-pedal driving,” he said.
Interior Innovation: Toyota and Honda Magic
Inside, the Honda and Toyota are almost perfect foils. The Toyota exudes an outdoorsy charm, even in sporty XSE trim. Like a rugged backpack worn by someone who went hiking once, the Toyota is cool even when you know harder-core alternatives exist. The grippy material behind the front door pulls and on the enormous HVAC knobs speak to that spirit, as does the line-pattern on the bottom of the cupholders and even on the footpad of the driver’s floormat. Then there’s the way the geometric pattern in the headlights matches the pattern on the door sill trim. Taken at this level of interior detail or from 50 feet, the RAV4’s design will inspire pride from owners who notice. Pro tip: Even if you rarely use the RAV4 Hybrid’s Eco and Sport drive modes, think of the controller as a soothing fidget toy. When you’re waiting for someone, rotate the grippy material of that drive mode disc to see the light change from green to blue to red. Neat.
The Honda takes a more middle-of-the-road approach. The SUV’s woodlike trim isn’t as convincing as what you’ll find in the Accord, but it still speaks to the CR-V’s more mainstream-luxury approach. Where the RAV4 XSE has blue accents on the dash and in the seats, the CR-V Hybrid’s biggest interior change compared to the non-hybrid model is the lack of a gear stalk. In its place, this Honda has gear buttons that are intuitive once you get used to them. Oddly, the gear stalk of our RAV4 XSE tester required a bit more effort to push from drive to park than we’d like.
On the practical side of things, the SUVs excel in different ways. The CR-V Hybrid’s cargo load floor may be slightly lower than the Toyota’s, but the Honda only offers 33.2 cubic feet of cargo space to the Toyota’s 37.6. Both cargo areas are spacious, but it’s worth noting you won’t lose any cubes shifting from non-hybrid to hybrid in the Toyota—a hybrid SUV that also manages to make room for a spare tire. With the Honda, non-hybrids provide an extra 6.0 cubic feet.
If you buy on a day when your left brain is calling the shots, we’d still recommend the Honda. Because although the CR-V lacks the RAV4’s cargo space advantage, it blows the Toyota out of the water in most practical details in front of the cargo area. Honda’s mastered the details—maybe that’s one reason this generation CR-V won a non-hybrid Big Test comparison and was our 2018 SUV of the Year. It’s everything from the way the rear doors open almost 90 degrees to the way the front seat tracks aren’t as intrusive for backseat passengers as in the Toyota. It’s the way the drivetrain hump is that much less noticeable, making it easier for outboard passengers to stretch their legs toward the center. Up front, it’s the way the supremely usable, flexible center console makes the cabin feel airier. Even the steering wheel’s volume and track-forward controls are in a smarter place on the Honda.
Still, the CR-V’s far from perfect. Cortina missed having a tuning knob, and the CR-V’s infotainment screen feels like a sad, 7.0-inch homage to what used to be acceptable at this price point. Most CR-V competitors offer screens that are a bit larger and, crucially, mounted higher on the dash for optimal visibility. Expect the next-gen CR-V to adopt this layout—you know, just like the 2020 Accord already does.
Which Hybrid SUV Is Best?
This is a close one. These two sales leaders demonstrate that no one needs to accept a compact hybrid SUV with an absurdly high cargo area load floor anymore. And at least with the Honda and Toyota, MotorTrend testing confirms that poky acceleration is a thing of the past. Go ahead and roll your eyes; the real winner here is you. Both rivals are worth driving even as they strive to be the best hybrid SUV in different ways.
The Toyota actually offers more value and tech on lower trim levels than the Honda, which charges a greater premium for a power liftgate, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. When it comes to our $37,070 CR-V Touring and $38,557 RAV4 XSE hybrid testers, though, we couldn’t ignore that gaping price difference. At the more expensive end of the segment, the Toyota doesn’t have $1,500 more excellence (or equipment) than the Honda. Also, Toyota, how about adding a power passenger seat on some 2021 or 2022 RAV4s?
Now a few years removed from its SUV of the Year win, the Honda can’t hide a couple of warts in hybrid form. But if we had just under $40,000 for a hybrid SUV, we’ll take the CR-V.

Honda HR-V vs Honda CR-V: which one – and at what price? Both the Honda HR-V and CR-V are popular crossovers with more than a few similarities, but which one is the better buy?Handout / Honda The CR-V and HR-V are two of Honda’s most popular crossovers, and for a good reason — they tick many boxes for may Canadians, but there’s a bit of a price overlap between the two. So, if you’re cross-shopping the CR-V and HR-V but can’t decide which one to go for, we’re going to try and help you out.OverviewThe 2019 Honda HR-V starts at $23,300 and tops out at $32,000. Its big brother, the 2019 Honda CR-V, starts at $27,690 and runs to $39,090, all before freight, taxes, and any other applicable fees. The HR-V gets a small price bump for 2020, ranging between $24,290 and $32,790 fully loaded. The CR-V also gets a minor refresh (and price bump) for 2020, now starting at $28,690 and topping out at $42,590. For both, the manual transmission is no longer available, which explains why their base prices are higher than some other competitors. So, the only gearbox proposed is the CVT. Deal with it.The 2019 Honda HR-V is available in three trims LX, Sport and Touring. All-wheel-drive is optional on the base LX, while its standard on the Sport and Touring. Meanwhile, the CR-V is available in LX, EX, EX-L and Touring trims, and like the HR-V, all-wheel-drive is standard for all but the base LX. Note: For 2020, the CR-V will have a fifth and even more luxurious version, the Black Edition, for $42,590. Three reasons you should choose the

The Supreme Solution Of rav4 vs crv
In case you are interested in a brand new crossover SUV, the rav4 vs crv are the units which need to be on top of one's shopping list. Let us compare the rav4 vs crv in order to figure out which cross over SUV will be the appropriate alternative for you this version year. For some people enthusiastic about driving a crossover SUV, the important feature is your ability to maintain charge of your car on / off the road. If you should be on the lookout for superior command no matter what the road throws your way, there are no two better vehicles than the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda crv. Once you are driving of the CR V, you're going to be capable of using an excellent Actual Time All Wheel Drive program which mechanically adjusts to altering road conditions. Equally impressive is that your all wheel drive system provided from the RAV 4, that comprises Dynamic Torque management for an excellent level of traction in case you're on the road. A vital component of any vehicle is what it offers from the manner of technological innovation, also consumers from Lawrence, Brunswick, and also Freehold are likely to enjoy using the technology that is innovative.
The rav4 vs crv equally supply attractive cottages that are full of high quality materials such as leather seats and wood trims. This strategy will even alert you when you're getting too close to a car or human being. In the event that you can't hit the brakes over time, this system could do it that you simply help steer clear of impact. If you start to drift from your lane with a turn sign, then this strategy can send visual and audible alerts for you to do it. Otherwise, it can provide gentle corrective steering to support guide the car back into the middle of the street. Utilizing a forward facing digital camera to detect velocity limit signs, stop signs, and return signs, this system will keep tabs, and exhibit them on the multi information exhibit for straightforward viewing. The 2019 crv has progressed driver assistive technology also, but regrettably, none of them come conventional. Additionally, this car doesn't provide anything like the Road Sign Assist function found at the Toyota version.
Among the first cross over SUVs to hit on the marketplace, the Toyota RAV4 has always made a feeling due to its flexibility. Over the years, the section has increasingly seen its share of competitors, for example the Subaru Forester. Both the rav4 vs crv provide Andover and Lawrence location drivers ample flexibility and room, a great deal of ruggedness with all wheel driveway and come with various connectivity features. Of course, the RAV4 offers it any way you like, and with its own technology, there are far more standard offerings, such as Entune and far more. However, when it comes down to this , you would like a stand out driving encounter, which is what the Toyota RAV4 has always given, therefore below are the different manners it piled up against the Subaru Forester. Even scaling into the peak of the trim tree, gas efficacy remains an asset for the RAV 4. As the Forester 2.0 XT CVT Touring offers 27 mpg highway, the RAV 4 AWD Platinum Card Stipulates an estimated 2 9 MPG around the street.

2020 Subaru Outback Engine Options: 2.5 or 2.4 XT—Which Engine Is Best?
If you’re considering a 2020 Subaru Outback, you’ve probably wondered if the 2.4 XT engine is any good. Now that the Outback’s engine upgrade model has seriously improved its fuel economy, the XT could become a viable candidate for an increasing number of buyers. If you’re comparing the 2.5 against the 2.4 (XT) engine or just want to know what the base Outback is like to drive, keep reading.
2020 Outback Fuel Economy: Class-Competitive Numbers
For a midsize wagon with SUV pretenses, the 2020 Outback’s fuel economy is pretty good. As you compare the Subaru to other SUVs, keep in mind that every Outback has standard AWD. If you stick with the 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder base engine, that 182-hp powerplant delivers 26/33 mpg city/highway, 1 mpg better than the last-gen model in both city and highway numbers and competitive in its loosely defined segment. If you match the Outback against the best compact SUV around—the Honda CR-V—it’s basically a tie. The 2020 CR-V 1.5T delivers 27/32 mpg in AWD form, or an even higher 28/34 mpg if you don’t mind sticking with FWD. Against the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe, the Subaru scores a clear win. The Outback’s 26/33 mpg rates well against a Santa Fe 2.4 AWD’s 21/27 mpg (or 22/29 with FWD).
The real news with the 2020 Outback’s engine options is the new-to-Outback 2.4-liter turbo-four. Producing 260 hp, the engine helps the Outback earn 23/30 mpg, way better than the 3.6R six-cylinder of the last-gen model, which was only good for 20/27. Although there are reasons to like Subaru’s downsizing move, as you’ll see below, the way the engine interacts with the car’s standard CVT could still use some refining.
2020 Outback Driving Range: The Real Advantage
Fuel economy isn’t much different between the 2020 Outback 2.5 and the 2020 CR-V 1.5T, but driving range sure is. Thanks to the Outback’s gigantic 18.5-gallon gas tank, the Subaru trounces the competition. Go with the EPA’s driving breakdown of 55 percent city driving and 45 percent highway, and the 2020 Outback 2.5 will go 536 miles before needing a fill-up—that’s a more than 100-mile advantage over the 2020 CR-V. The 2020 Santa Fe is closer, with a 451-mile range with an AWD model, but that’s only with the more efficient 2.4-liter base engine.
The 2020 Outback’s move from the six-cylinder 3.6R model to the turbo-four XT model pays dividends not just with mpgs, but with additional miles between gas station visits. Again, using the 55 percent city/45 percent highway split from the EPA, the 2020 Outback XT will go 74 miles farther on a tank of gas than the 2019 Outback six-cylinder model (for a total of 481 miles).
Where the CR-V may soon beat both Outback engine options is a sub-segment the Toyota RAV4 already dominates: hybrids. There’s no Subaru Outback hybrid, but the Toyota RAV4 hybrid is good for 41/38 mpg and a driving range of nearly 600 miles. Expect similar numbers for the upcoming CR-V hybrid.
2020 Outback Acceleration: Improved, But Is It Enough?
Outback drivers don’t generally race from stoplight to stoplight, but even SUVs and wagons will eventually need to crest a hill with a full load of people, or pass a big truck on a two-lane road. And that’s where the 2020 Outback 2.5 falters. The CVT’s fake gear shifts with heavy acceleration can’t disguise a 0–60 mph time of 8.7 seconds. Remember that the CR-V matched the Outback’s mpgs? It does so with a 7.6-second performance to 60. As for the Outback 2.5, we called it “gutless” at 2020 SUV of the Year testing. Still, for day-to-day driving, the 2020 Outback 2.5 gets the job done. Drivers who can accept that passing other vehicles will take longer should be happy with the 2.5’s lower price and higher fuel economy.
Those who want to see what the 260-hp XT engine has to offer will need to stick with the Onyx XT, Limited XT, and Touring XT trims. Although we found the Onyx fun to slide around off-road, the 2.4 powertrain proved underwhelming on the road. To 60 mph, the engine impresses, with a 6.1-second time that easily improves on the 2018 Outback 3.6R’s 6.9 seconds. That’s not the full story, though. On the road, we called the engine “unrefined,” and the power delivery proved uneven. For a few MotorTrend editors, the engine-transmission interaction is rough enough that we’d select the 2.5-liter engine to avoid it.
2020 Outback Handling, Ride, and Transmission
No matter which of the two engine options you pick, the Outback won’t handle like a sports car. In the big wagon-SUV’s case, spirited driving will be met by a healthy dose of body roll. The Subaru’s chief advantage is its superb suspension tuning. Multiple staffers have complimented the comfortable way the Outback rolls down the road, even one with imperfections or railroad tracks. It’s a dynamic advantage you won’t find on some competitors at any price.
The CVT is another story. Although most of us found it responsive, the transmission’s fake upshifts and downshifts aren’t for everyone. As we’ve mentioned, the real disappointment comes with the 2.4 XT/CVT combination. We hope the 2021 Outback XT models sport a recalibrated transmission that’s better equipped to responsively handle that powerful turbo-four.
Which 2020 Outback Engine Option Is Best?
There’s no unanimous victor here, at least on the MotorTrend staff. Having said that, most of us would probably pick the base 2.5-liter engine. Outback 2.5 models are slow, but it’s not a deal-breaking disadvantage. So if you didn’t have your heart set on the 2.4 XT-only Onyx model, consider the 2.5-liter models to save a little cash, mpgs, and headache during those times when you need a quick response from a car’s engine and transmission.

Versatilidade é diferencial do HR-V
