The Stunning Transformation Of Caitríona Balfe
Few shows have had as big a cultural impact as "Outlander." Based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon, the show follows a World War II nurse who finds herself transported to 17th-century Scotland when she finds magical stones in the Highlands. The show was Caitríona Balfe's big break — previously, the Irish actor had worked as a model and appeared in only a few small productions. However, since playing "Outlander's" Claire, she has become one of TV's most recognizable faces. She has also landed roles in films like "Ford v Ferrari" alongside Matt Damon and Christian Bale and Kenneth Branagh's Oscar-winning "Belfast."
With "Outlander" nearing its series finale in 2023, Balfe is looking ahead to new projects such as the upcoming "The Amateur," as the era draws to a close. It's the perfect time to reflect on her career so far. So, without further ado, here is the stunning transformation of Caitríona Balfe.
Caitríona Balfe’s upbringing in Northern Ireland colored the rest of her life

Caitríona Balfe was born in 1979 in the rural village of Tydavnet (1) near the Northern Irish border. Her upbringing in Ireland has colored her entire life. "It's such a part of the fabric of your life when you live in those areas," she told Vanity Fair in 2022. "It's really not until you get older that you look back and you realize the craziness of it, or the strangeness of it."
And by the sounds of things, it was certainly an abnormal place to grow up. Growing up so close to the border, Balfe was used to being surrounded by British soldiers and once even found herself in the middle of a bomb scare.
Her father was a garda, the national name for the Irish police force, and she was sometimes bullied for it. "Let's say being the daughter of a garda in 1980s borderland counties was not the easiest thing," she later told The Irish Times.
Caitríona Balfe was a voracious reader as a child
As a young girl, Caitríona Balfe filled most of her time with reading. In fact, when she was young, her father took away the family's TV, so instead, she looked to literature for stories and entertainment. As she told The Irish Times, she raced through the classics, including Emily Brontë, Aldous Huxley, George Orwell, and Robert Pirsig — she also was a fan of modern writers like Ian McEwan.
When Balfe reached adulthood, her love of literature continued to be a big part of her life. "You always find her on set with a book," her co-star Maria Doyle Kennedy said. "She's a ferocious reader." And, in 2019, Balfe told Stylist, "I could just lock myself away and just read for a month, which would be so lovely."
She even started her own book club on Instagram where she posts videos about what she's reading for her fans. "First rule of book club.... We read ! Then we talk..!" she wrote in one of the first posts in 2020.
Caitríona Balfe grew up wanting to act

From a very young age, Caitríona Balfe knew exactly what she wanted to do with her life: acting. "It's in you, right?" she said to Backstage when asked about her first inspirations. "Like it's something you're either cursed with, you know, this need for attention and need to perform and all those things," she added, laughing.
Not only was she the fourth of seven children and therefore used to seeking out attention, she also had acting in her blood. After all, her father was something of an amateur actor himself, having appeared in a comedy troupe. "If my dad has some inclination towards it, there is probably something passed down," she mused to The Irish Times. Plus, she added, acting offered a much-needed form of escapism. "[T]here wasn't an awful lot of things to do," she said.
When she got older, Balfe pursued her passion for acting taking a course at the Dublin Institute of Technology.

Before Caitríona Balfe finished her course at drama school, she was scouted by a modeling agent. "I took what I thought was going to be a year out," she told Backstage, "and I never went back. Very, very bold of me."
Balfe dove into her unexpected modeling career, setting off for Paris. "I always just wanted to travel," she explained to Vanity Fair. "Growing up, we never did that — there were too many of us. We didn't have the money."
Even though Balfe had always dreamed of acting, modeling also appealed to her innate desire to perform. As she put it, "There was something about the theatricality of the runway shows — and the event of it — that I really loved." And she was pretty good at it. She appeared in shows for all of the big designers, including Chanel, Alexander McQueen, and Valentino, and even walked the runway as a Victoria's Secret Angel. And so, for a while at least, she committed herself to a career in the modeling industry.

Throughout her 20s, Caitríona Balfe's modeling career careened from success to success. She modeled all over the world but eventually found herself settled down in New York City. "That's been the longest of anywhere since I left Ireland," she told Backstage in 2020. After a decade of modeling, Balfe began to crave something new. "For the last couple of years [of modeling] I was miserable, really," she confessed to Vanity Fair. "It's not exactly the nicest industry or the healthiest industry."
So, discontented with modeling, she revisited her passion for acting, first taking a few classes and later landing a tiny role as one of the "clackers" in the 2006 film "The Devil Wears Prada." "I think they just came to modeling agencies and were like, 'We need a bunch of women who can walk in heels,'" she recalled of the lucky break during an appearance on "The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter" podcast. "My agency knew I wanted to act and if people would come looking for stuff, they were sending me out to a few auditions."

When Caitríona Balfe had finally had enough of modeling, she decided to take a leap of faith into the world of acting — so, she left New York behind and set off for Los Angeles. "LA is where I came and said, 'OK, this is what I wanna do with my life,'" she said to Backstage of her first impressions. She continued taking classes — one was even a $5 class. As she told The Irish Times, "These are the weird things I did when I was wanting to be an actor in LA when I first got here."
In fact, it sounds like Balfe's early years in L.A. were filled with bold, "weird" decisions. For one thing, she only knew one person in the city when she moved. Balfe knew that moving to LA was a bit crazy — but she committed to living in a "bubble of delusion." As she put it, "I guess ultimately I was like: 'I can make this work.'"
At first, following her dream of acting wasn't easy

Life in L.A. was anything but easy for Caitríona Balfe when she first arrived. Initially, she faced rejection after rejection. "I started from scratch. I didn't have any managers, I didn't know any agents, I hadn't acted in almost a decade," she told Backstage of her initial struggles to land work.
But even though Balfe dealt with lots of rejection, she persevered. Luckily, modeling had given her a thick skin that served her well. "In an audition, if it didn't work out, it wasn't always because you didn't do a good job, or you weren't good," she explained to The Guardian. "It was other arbitrary things like your name's not big enough. Which can also be soul-destroying, but I don't know, it's different."
Balfe did land a few roles, but they were few and far between. In 2011, she had a small role in the film "Super 8." In 2012, she landed a guest role on "The Beauty Inside" and the show "H+." In 2013, there were several films: "Crush," "Now You See Me," and "Escape Plan." Slowly, she was building a stronger CV.

Everything changed for Caitríona Balfe in 2014 when she landed the lead role on the much-hyped Starz show "Outlander." "It was a total crapshoot," Balfe later recalled of the audition for the show while speaking to The Guardian. "I had done a few jobs, nothing of note really. I was living in LA and I was really struggling, actually, it was about four or five months since I'd had a job."
At the time, she didn't realize how big the book series was. "I wasn't even aware of the book series when I got the first audition," she said to Vogue. "Apparently, they had been searching for [Claire] for a very long time."
Balfe landed the role when she was about to head off on a holiday in India. Because her career was going slowly in LA, she decided to leap headfirst into a new life, filming in Scotland. "I didn't realize I'd still be there almost eight and a half years later," she later admitted to The Guardian.
Caitríona Balfe shot to fame almost instantly afterward
Almost as soon as "Outlander" came out, Caitríona Balfe became one of TV's biggest names. Ronald D. Moore, who developed "Outlander," had warned Balfe about just how life-changing the role would be. "I walked her to the elevator, and just before the doors closed on her, I said, 'Your life is about to change forever,'" he said to Backstage, recalling the day she was cast. "And she gave me a grin that was both thrilled and slightly nervous. I never saw her hesitate after that."
The first episode premiered at Comic Con. "It was insane," she told Vogue. Soon enough, she began to notice her fame growing. As she told Backstage, she had only a few hundred followers on Twitter before playing Claire. "Within about a month or two, it was thousands of people — and my phone, I didn't know how to turn off the alerts, so it was just going all the time," she said. That's when she realized just how big she was becoming.

Fame wasn't the only life-changing thing to come from her role in "Outlander" — Caitríona Balfe also gained a lifelong friend in Sam Heughan, her co-star. As Balfe explained to Parade, the pair made a conscious decision to become friends before filming even began. "We were just talking about it and we were like, 'Who knows what this is going to be?'" she recalled. The pair agreed to "have each other's backs." She added, "[W]e've done that from day one."
Since then, the pair have only become closer. In fact, during ATX TV's Women of "Outlander" panel, Balfe explained that she and Heughan have never even argued — although they have bickered. Heughan chimed in: "As our lives have gotten more complicated and busy, we may not see each other as much as we used to, but that core and that friendship and that base that we have has never changed." How adorable is that?
Caitríona Balfe landed a number of big roles in the 2010s
As Caitríona Balfe's fame grew in the wake of "Outlander," she landed more big roles in Hollywood — and worked with bigger and bigger stars.
In 2016, she landed a role in Jodie Foster's all-star film "Money Monster" — her co-stars included George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Dominic West, and Giancarlo Esposito. Sadly, Balfe didn't get to work with them too much as most of her scenes were filmed in front of a green screen. Nevertheless, she was starstruck to be working with Roberts. "I couldn't stop staring at her during our first read-through," she told W Magazine.
In 2019, she played Mollie Miles, the wife of Christian Bale's character, in "Ford v Ferrari." Matt Damon also starred in the film. "I walked into that film with the idea that I was gonna be very intimidated by both him and Matt [Damon]," she told Collider. But she was pleasantly surprised. "Immediately, when you meet both of them [and] the first thing that struck me about both of them is that they're just these great, humble family men. There was no ego or bravado. It was lovely."
Caitríona Balfe starred in Kenneth Branagh's Belfast in 2021
Caitríona Balfe landed a huge role in Kenneth Branagh's "Belfast" in 2021, playing Ma, the mother figure in Branagh's semi-autobiographical tale about the Troubles in Ireland. For Balfe, the role was particularly meaningful — after years of acting in Scotland, "Belfast" was much closer to home for the Irish actor. "As an Irish person, you read so many of these scripts about the Troubles, and they all have this romantic version of the violence," Balfe told Vanity Fair. "Belfast," she explained, was different.
In fact, Balfe even saw her own family in the script. "Even though this is very much Ken's story, there's a universality to it that allows you to see your own," she told The Scotsman. "I definitely thought of my own mother in playing Ma."
Clearly, Balfe was extremely proud of the film. It was a huge hit and quickly generated awards buzz. However, Balfe remained characteristically humble. "I'm just happy that it's turned out as beautifully as it has and that it's getting the recognition it deserves because it's shot so beautifully and the hard work and heart and soul that went into making it are second to none," she said.
Caitríona Balfe had her first child in 2021
Caitríona Balfe began dating music producer (2) Tony McGill in 2015 (3). The pair married in 2019, and in 2021, they had their first child. Naturally, having a child gave Balfe a new set of priorities. Even though rumors circulated that she'd be nominated for an Oscar for her role in "Belfast," she found her self preoccupied with her new son. "Luckily, I'm doing a lot of that [changing nappies], so I'm actually not thinking about the awards too much: It's more, 'Stop peeing on me!'" she joked to The Guardian.
However, having a child also brought out Balfe's protective side — especially when she found out that a small group of fans online were convinced that her child was actually the product of an imagined affair with her "Outlander" co-star Sam Heughan. "I don't want those crazies — because that's what they are — I just don't want them talking about [my son]," she told Vanity Fair. Apparently, that's why she and McGill have kept their son's name private.

In 2023, Starz announced that "Outlander" would be coming to an end after its eighth season. After the WGA and SAG-AFTRA writer/actor strikes, filming for the final season was delayed. However, Balfe has already begun to mourn the end of the show that gave her her big break.
"Sam and I were doing a video for this season and I started to get emotional already," she told the Express. "It's going to be so weird. It's been such an amazing ride that it's nice to wrap it up while we all still love each other and we are all still feeling like we're making a good show."
Even though "Outlander" may be ending, we can't help but feel that Balfe's career is only just beginning. In fact, she's already set to appear in the film "Amateur" (4) in 2024 alongside Rami Malek, Rachel Brosnahan, and Laurence Fishburne. We can't wait to see what else she does next.
The List
Errors that caught Brian’s attention: (1) Dublin (2) artist/band manager (3) 2014 (4) First paragraph says “The Amateur,” as Malek has and IMDb did. Who knows? 🤷🏻‍♂️ The first promo art will tell us. 🍿
Remember…  I walked her to the elevator, and just before the doors closed on her, I said, “Your life is about to change forever.” — Ronald D Moore

On Saturday, former U.S. President Donald Trump became the latest major political figure worldwide to face an assassination attempt, in an incident that experts say may reflect a broader global pattern of increasing threats and violence against politicians.
In recent years, for example, both Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico and former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan have survived being shot (Fico in May this year and Khan in November 2022), while then-Argentine Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner narrowly escaped a shooting attempt in 2022 when the gunman’s pistol jammed. South Korean opposition leader Lee Jae-myung was stabbed in January, and former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was stabbed in 2018. And assassinations claimed the lives of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (in 2022) and British politicians Jo Cox (in 2016) and David Amess (in 2021).
“We seem to be seeing that assassinations are on the rise now,” said Jacob Ware, a terrorism expert at the Council on Foreign Relations and the co-author of God, Guns, and Sedition: Far-Right Terrorism in America, although he noted that he was drawing on anecdotal evidence.
“Politicians and political figures are finding themselves in the crosshairs, and the people are determining that the ballot box and elections are no longer the best way to exercise political grievances,” Ware said.
The United States is no stranger to high-profile assassinations and attempts, both on the lives of sitting U.S. presidents and presidential candidates. Four former U.S. presidents—Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, William McKinley, and John F. Kennedy—were killed during their presidential terms. A handful more survived failed attempts, including Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and George W. Bush, the latter of whom had a hand grenade thrown at him while in Tbilisi, Georgia. In 1968, U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy, who was a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, was assassinated.
In recent years, the number of threats issued against U.S. public officials has grown, according to a 2024 study conducted by the researchers at the National Counterterrorism Innovation, Technology, and Education Center. The study, which examined federal charges over the past decade, found that threats have “steadily risen” over that time period, coinciding with a surge in political polarization across the country.
“In the last six years, the number of individuals who have been arrested at the federal level for making threats has nearly doubled from the previous four years,” the study’s authors wrote, while the number of federal prosecutions for such threats is “on pace to hit new record highs” in 2023 and 2024.
“The mistrust and distrust of government is so great that it leads to almost the dehumanization of political figures,” said Bruce Hoffman, a counterterrorism expert at the Council on Foreign Relations and the other co-author of God, Guns, and Sedition: Far-Right Terrorism in America. “That’s also contributed to this demonization of individuals that can, in the minds of certainly a minority of Americans, incite violence.”
Two recent examples are incidents involving former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who were the targets of failed abduction and assassination plots, respectively; in the Pelosi case, though the former speaker avoided the attack, her husband was brutally assaulted with a hammer. And in 2020, the FBI announced that it had arrested more than a dozen people in connection with a plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and put her on trial for treason; nine people were ultimately convicted or pleaded guilty in the plot, and five were acquitted.
“It certainly feels like we’re in a different era. There’s a lack of civility that I think permeates our political discourse, and it’s frequently peppered with references to violence and extreme violence” said Colin P. Clarke, the director of research at the Soufan Group. That includes Trump himself, Clarke said, who “has been a big purveyor of this.”
That may not be a uniquely American phenomenon, either. While assassinations of high-profile leaders in the world’s most-developed nations may be relatively rare today, the outlook may be different for other government figures around the world.
One key example is Mexico, which recently reached a bleak new political milestone in holding its deadliest election season ever. During the country’s 2024 election cycle, 37 political candidates were assassinated, many of whom were vying for local office. In the country’s 2021 midterm election, 36 candidates were assassinated, according to Integralia, a security consultancy.
Beyond the issue of assassinations, other violence against candidates was also more pervasive in Mexico this year. Integralia logged 828 nonlethal violent incidents during the 2024 election season, eclipsing the 389 attacks recorded in 2018 during the country’s previous presidential election.
Pakistan has also experienced a rise in such threats in recent years. According to the University of Maryland’s Global Terrorism Database, whose data only goes as far as 2020, Pakistan experienced a marked uptick in assassinations and attempts against government officials from 2012 to 2016, peaking at 36 in 2013 and 2015.
While variations in laws and data collection make it difficult for researchers to measure whether there’s been a broad global uptick in violence, these examples indicate that they’re hardly uncommon. Now, the attempted assassination of Trump may serve as an alarm bell for other officials around the world. On Sunday, John Woodcock, a member of the U.K. House of Lords and a former government advisor on political violence, said in an interview with the Guardian that the attempted assassination is “a vivid reminder of the vulnerability of all politicians” and warned of the possibility of similar attacks in the United Kingdom.
“We have seen the growth in the UK of US-style politics of aggressive confrontation and intimidation which is unfortunately, exactly the toxic environment that could lead to another assassination attempt on a UK politician, of which we have already tragically seen a number in recent years,” he said.
Ware, the Council on Foreign Relations expert, said that the attempted assassination of Trump, a former U.S. president, presents an “opportunity for Americans to come together and decide: ‘Is this really the kind of country that we want to build for the next generation?’”

Y’all come meet my twin
-he adopted a cat named Luna with his ex which then became his cat. He was a self-identified “cat person” but horribly allergic for most of his life (also allergic to dogs, trees, grass, pollen, dust, mold…..) In high school he started getting allergy shots to counteract this so he could finally achieve his dream of snuggling cats.
-He had a little scar on his wrist from where a heat lamp was left on him in the NICU (we should have sued, smh.) We were both hella preemie and in the NICU for a while, but him much longer than me, because he was a fragile delicate little flower (unlike me, who is very tough and cool.) He was also supposed to be born first, but then I shoved him out of the way at the last second. I was an only child for 46 whole blissful minutes before his pokey ass finally joined me.
-He fucking loved bonfires. He was a boyscout for, like, eight years, and would often have bonfires out in the backyard once we moved out into the woods in 2020. (Before, when we lived in the city, he’d have bonfires with his friends out in the woodsy part of the local park and they’d all run for it when the cops showed up.)
-He was a stoner in high school lmao and sold weed. Never shared with me (dickhead) but mostly stopped smoking once our dad got sick because there couldn’t be smoke in our house when his lungs were so fucked.
-Loved loved loved cars. Loved driving. Loved working on and fixing cars. Would regularly buy old fucked up cars and then figure out how to fix them and then sell them for a profit as a “side hustle”/hobby. Almost entirely self-taught. Was the type of person who would consider you passing him on the highway a personal slight and challenge (what a moron) and then start insulting whatever car you were driving (because he could recognize the make/model/year of almost any car on sight) (“You’re gonna pass me? Seriously? In a fucking 2005 Ford Escape? Are you kidding me? Do you know how you look right now—“)
-Dumb stupid idiot. I loved him very much. I love him very much.

What are your thoughts on 1975 fans trying to attribute a lot of Easter eggs to Matty in the new video? :( Someone on Twitter put a visual together of all the highlights and it’s so annoying because when it’s laid out like that I see it and I hate that I see it. Just like lighting visuals being very similar, and particular dates being significant to the 1975 and/or Taylor. For example, the July 9th 1:38 people are saying is for Taylor and Matty’s birthdays (the 13th and the 8th). I guess the timeline makes sense because early April when she filmed this video would have been around the time when she was hanging out with him and doing whatever pr nightmare that was…talk me off the ledge pls! Lol.
Hi!
Don't worry, I went and check the threads you were talking about and I'm confident that it's not related or at least not as they think.

The lighting in I Can See You Lyrics Video is the bisexual lighting and fits really well with the theme of the song.

The spy scene is remisnescent of a commercial she did:

Tumblr media
Her being locked up in a Vault. With an orange door.
Tumblr media
And the Eclipsed Sun imagery (do with that that you will ;-) )
Tumblr media
Also some Karlie's parallel:
Tumblr media
With Long Live lyrics on her arm.
"I had the time of my life fighting dragons with you"
Tumblr media
Long Live was written a month after Chely Wright came out. And if you take the time to really look at the lyrics, you see how well this all fits together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Someone counted all the marks on the wall, and there's 1468 lines/days.
The exact number of days between when her masters got stolen and her releasing Speak Now Taylor's Version (X)
When she's finally free. All the glass closet shatter.
Tumblr media
And even more. The building holding her captive explodes once and for all.
Tumblr media
The person who help her escape has stars on her right side (Eye theory I'm looking at you)
Tumblr media
Stars on the face are there always to depict Taylor Swift TM public personna.
And she's the only one that can actually see Taylor and help her out.
Some say it might be gaylors, who can actually see the real Taylor.
But whoever this person is meant to represent.
She codes...
Tumblr media
And has a ring on her right ring finger....
Now the dates:
Tumblr media
It's tonight.
Remembre how Taylor said that Speak Now her version would be out on July 7th just in time for July 9th where we would be able to celebrate?
Now the time 1:38. The mission starts at that time. But how much time would it take to get her out? 20 minutes maybe?
Wich leads to: "Lit through the darkness at 1:58" and "That July ninth, the beat of your heart"
Both lyrics from last kiss.
To me it does sound like a rendez-vous. Now the only thing to determine is: is it 1:38 ET or 1:38 Liverpool time wich would be 8:38 ET (just before Taylor goes on stage for the show tonight).
And notice that in the countdown yesterday. Beside the clock in the front, every other clocks pointed to 1:58
Tumblr media
And the other date is where it gets really interesting...
I found this last night.
Tumblr media
May 22 2020
Here's what happened for Taylor on that date:
Tumblr media
And when you type the adress, you are still led to her website with this ULR message:
Tumblr media
"they wouldn't me do it Karma" (X)
And yes, I think it is exactly what you think it is...
Remembre how last week right before Karlie posted 6 palm trees (Karma was supposed to be TS 6th album)
Tumblr media
The URL on karmaonthewall.com changed for "after Midnights it starts" to "Ready For It"
Tumblr media
Suki, Austin and Kristine Karlie's sister also posted palm trees last week....
Here's a post I did about how Ready For It is relevent for all of this (X)
So yeah... everything in that MV is sooo important.
Nothing is related to Matty.
Now we just have to wait and see. And show a lot of support and love for that amazing woman who's been throught so much and deserves the world.
And after this URL change of last night... I think we can safely agree that karmaonthewall.com is really related to Taylor too...

So about three years ago you made a TMA/GF crossovery post with the characters as avatars. I'm a little late but I wanna share my 2 cents:
-Eye Ford. He would fit it so well. The Eye would absolutely love him. He would love the Eye. HOWEVER, to play the devils advocate: Hunt Ford. Hunt for knowledge, hunt for recognition, hunt for Bill, always chasing a goal just ahead of him.
-Spiral Mabel? Yes, fits her amazingly, love it. 10/10, no other thoughts.
-Lonely Dipper... I can see it, the self-isolation that could lead to it, but he ultimately strikes me as more of an Eye avatar. He's so obsessed with knowledge and "solving the mystery".
-Stan. Stan would be Stranger. He spent so long being different people, putting on mask after mask, changing names as easily as clothes. A persona for every occasion, the conman, the grunkle, the boss, the brother working tirelessly to get his twin back.
-McGucket, Spiral, same as Mabel but a different flavor.
All interesting points! I believe I made that post back in 2020, when I had just gotten into TMA and was mostly listening to it as background noise while playing video games and didn't get very far into it because I kept zoning out and losing information. I spent a couple years after that feeling ambivalent/negative about it due to its popularity dying out, and then revisited it with some friends fairly recently to more thoroughly take in the story and see if it still held up. Now that I have a better understanding of it and how the entities work I think my idea of a TMA/GF crossover would be a little different, but that being said I was mostly dicking around to begin with and didn't put too much thought into entity assignments at the time.
Hunt avatar or hunt-marked Ford is an interesting one, I think it aligns well with his motivations but the hunt usually has some crossover with the eye anyway since they tend to be pursuit-motivated. If I ever revisited an actual crossover concept he would probably be an archivist- possibly an ex-archivist who escaped the position?
No notes with the rest of them, I agree that Dipper is much closer to the eye and Stan is 100% stranger material (if he would even be a full-fledged avatar, anyway. I had it more in mind that they're just marked and Ford is the only one who would have counted as an avatar.) And, yeah, Mabel is the proactive creation/artistic aspects of the spiral whereas Fiddleford is more afflicted by it. The society of the blind eye lends itself very well towards a setting like TMA considering how many shadowy groups and cults they have running around in that podcast.

This blog is so fun to scroll as someone who knows almost nothing about cars. I had a deep familial love for my 2006 Ford Escape, which my parents bought new when I was 9, and was the only car I ever drove until she was diagnosed with terminal rust last year. I couldn't afford another SUV so I replaced her with a 2020 Chevy Spark (almost new, only like 20k miles, got an insane deal) which is a very fun little car, nice to drive and I don't drive a lot so I don't need something very heavy. I do miss my baby though :'( Just wondering what do you think of those cars! And is there any specific individual car that you've really loved?
Tumblr media
(me getting my drivers license lol)
aww omg. that’s awesome! ford has their issues but any car that stays with you that long is gonna feel special and worth it. and for all the issues 2000s ford are notorious for theres a reason so many of them are still on the road, they’re really not that bad. rust sucks, it’s killing my car now and takes so many good cars off the road.
i will say i’ve had a few friends have some issues with their chevy sparks so it wouldn’t be my choice, but especially if you got a good deal on it that’s awesome, they get insane gas mileage from what i’ve heard. i’d say just keep an eye on all your fluid levels when you can!

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
Tumblr media
They don’t make movies like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom anymore - for multiple reasons. Certain aspects of this film will take modern movie-goers aback. You can focus on the dubious cultural depictions, violence and gross-out humor or you can divert your attention to what works: the never-ending tension, action scenes & set pieces, cinematography and the ever-charismatic lead.
In this prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) narrowly escapes from crime boss Lao Che (Roy Chiao) with his eleven-year-old sidekick Short Round (Ke Huy Quan) and nightclub singer Willie Scott (Kate Capshaw). Unfortunately, they soon find themselves stranded in northern India, where many children have gone missing and a sacred stone - one of the five fabled Shankara stones - has been stolen. Their quest to unravel the mystery brings our heroes to an ancient Thuggee cult who practice dark magic and ritualistic human sacrifices.
In a way, this picture is much lighter than Raiders. We’re not dealing with Nazis. Indy and his little buddy are going up against India’s equivalent of devil-worshippers but the villains are firmly planted in the realm of fantasy. There are many jokes as the boys playfully bicker and roll their eyes at Willie, who has no business being on this adventure but wound up alongside them. Over and over, she’s screaming at the bugs, skeletons, traps and dangers they encounter. The duo would be much better off without the dumb blonde… but abandoning her would be irresponsible. She’s nothing like Karen Allen's Marion and the film makes that clear. If Willie's going to complain about being away from the city, let's give her a real reason to - which means lots and lots of ewwww moments. This is where people might raise an eyebrow. There’s a famous banquet scene where the most stomach-churning foods are served. You may interpret it as a) an implication that all Indians are barbarians that eat eyeballs and snakes (although the good villagers we meet early-on definitely do not) b) an elaborate gag that may or may not resonate with you (humor is subjective, after all) or c) hints that something at this palace is amiss…
Despite the initial tone, this is an intense movie. There are torture and grisly human sacrifices, children are kidnapped/enslaved, people are explicitly killed - often in gruesome manners. The tone is far too intense to be rated PG but it was. The PG-13 rating was only introduced after the MPAA got similar complaints from Gremlins just one month later.
This film isn't as mature as its "successor" and it doesn't feel as polished either, though the filmmaking is still excellent. Once Indy and the gang realize the danger they've stumbled upon, the tension never lets up. Every escape is merely a brief reprieve. A new peril rolls around the next corner, ready to flatten them. It's fast-paced and exciting. Along the way, you also get excellent cinematography and camerawork. The shots which contrast Short Round to his big buddy are terrific. Through quick cuts and parallel actions, the camera says more than words ever could. It's a roller-coaster ride - sometimes literally. You'll be left breathless and maybe even overwhelmed. Is the movie for kids? maybe, maybe not. It's somewhere in between.
Often violent & gruesome and lacking some of the sophistication of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is a disappointment... but only for this franchise. As a film on its own, or as a "first entry" in a series, it would make you go "wow!" Dated elements aside, it's exciting, memorable and fun. (On Blu-ray, May 22, 2020)

I guess people would rather put more blame on Ford and Mabel, since those two actually care when they make a dangerous mistake.
Bill wouldn’t care if you tried to call him out, he’d probably just take it as a compliment.
That being said, Mabel didn’t know what the rift was. She should be held accountable for being willing to trap everyone in a time bubble without their knowledge or consent. But she wasn’t willing to start the apocalypse on purpose, that was a result of getting tricked.
I also think it’s the fact that the writers gave Dipper more punishment for wanting to stay with Ford than they gave Mabel for refusing to accept his choice and trying to stop time.
Dipper was lost in the apocalypse for 3 days, all on his own, running from Bill’s monsters and lackeys. Mabel spent those days in paradise.
Dipper had to fight his way to Mabel’s prison bubble, literally dragging himself at one point. Only to find out she’s made her chunk of paradise and had no intention of leaving. And she made a fake version of him who’s nothing like him.
And then she doesn’t agree to come back until after he rejects Ford’s apprenticeship. Yes, she said he could take it afterwards, but if you look at it from Dipper’s perspective, something terrible could happen again if he doesn’t keep her placated.
My frustrations with Mabel are more directed at the writers for not portraying her as being wrong, and for over-punishing Dipper for everything. If he’s getting punished for his mistakes, why isn’t she?
What if Mabel saw everyone injured and had a moment where she thought about how much damage she did, and how she was safe and happy while her friends got hurt? What if she looked forced perky around the shack hideout, trying to keep the others in a good mood but feeling despondent herself?
What if she worried about telling Stan what she did, because he doesn’t want to rescue Ford in the apocalypse? Like, if they can’t reconcile over Ford’s project and the portal thing, and Stan hates Ford enough to leave him with Bill, then what happens when they find out about Mabel Bubble?
Mabel is Ford’s mirror when it comes to being the favored twin by their parents, not thinking about her twin’s needs enough, and getting tricked by Bill. When Bill wants to get Ford to give him mind access in exchange for the kids, instead of saying:
“Bill makes bad deals!” Why not have her work up the courage and then warn Ford by saying what she did, and how Bill will fake a happy ending? Because chances are high that Bill would put Ford in a false happy bubble if he’s not allowed to kill him once he has the equation.
And then Stan and Ford are talking in their cage, and he’s like
“I didn’t even know about her deal with Bill.” And Ford mentions Bill gloating about it before the rescue, pretending she was still in there to make him give up hope.
Tumblr media
All of that would have helped make Mabel a better written character in the Weirdmaggedon arc. But so would this: Make her fully aware that she’s trapped in a false world, but also unable to figure out an escape plan. So she has to pretend like she’s content in Mabel Land, including when the real Dipper arrives.
Tumblr media
Don’t have her ignorantly introduce Dippy Fresh, [and smile the whole time] have him show up out of no-where and the fake world citizens gloat to Dipper that he’s been replaced when he’s at the river. She could end up barricading him, Soos, Wendy and herself in the mayor office and tell Dipper that she was trying to make something similar to the real him, to keep herself sane. But when the fake world gave her that thing, she had to pretend that was what she wanted out of fear of what happens if she rejects the world.
Hindsight is 2020, but there had to be at least one of these solutions available for Mabel’s character development.
So yeah.
Bill watching the fandom blame Mabel for Weirdmageddon:
Tumblr media
all the years of manipulation and hard work just for someone else to get the credit
ok but for real, why was Mabel so villainized she didn't deserve that
is there anyone here that actually hates her still
