Mythology

*As a disclaimer with mythology. A lot have been lost to time. There are theories and attempts to reconstruct things although we may not truly know. A lot of lore has been Christianized like the Poetic Eddas.*

The Binding of Fenrir

The binding of Fenrir have many iterations and telling. The general story goes that the gods found Loki's children. They feared Fenrir because of his rapid growth. Some instances that Odin feared his fate and trying to delay it. The gods decided that they would bind Fenrir. As in Ragnarok Fenrir would kill Odin.

They threw Jörmungandr into the sea and Hel into Helheimr but they took Fenrir with them to keep an eye on him. Tyr was the only one who approached and fed him. As Fenrir grew the gods decided that he would not stay and tried to trick him into fetters. Fenrir broke every fetter until Skirnir went to the dwarves challenging them to make a chain that he could not break. The dwarves answered this challenge. They made a chain from the sound of a cat's footfall, the beard of a woman, the roots of a mountain, bear's sinews, fish's breath, and bird's spittle. They named this chain Gleipnir.

The gods challenged Fenrir to break Gleipnir but he knew this was a trick. He said that he would do so only if one of the gods would place his right hand in Fenrir's mouth as a pledge to free him if he failed to break the chain. (In Germanic culture, your right hand was used to swear an oath, and oaths were very serious. "oathbreakers" were sent to Náströnd as long with murderers and adulterers.)

Tyr was the one who stepped forward and placed his hand in Fenrir's mouth. But when Fenrir couldn't break free and the gods didn't keep their oath. He bit Tyr's hand off.

A forest located east of Midgard, inhabited by trollwomen who bore jötnar and giant wolves.

But he that leaps before her is called Hati Hródvitnisson. He is eager to seize the moon; and so it must be." Then said Gangleri: "What is the race of the wolves?" Hárr answered: "A witch dwells to the east of Midgard, in the forest called Ironwood: in that wood dwell the troll-women, who are known as Ironwood-Women. The old witch bears many giants for sons, and all in the shape of wolves; and from this source are these wolves sprung. The saying runs thus: from this race shall come one that shall be mightiest of all, he that is named Moon-Hound; he shall be filled with the flesh of all those men that die, and he shall swallow the moon, and sprinkle with blood the heavens and all the air; thereof shall the sun lose her shining, and the winds in that day shall be unquiet and roar on every side

Völuspá

Thursatru and Rökkatru

Anticosmic Norse Paganism or Thursian sorcery venerates the Thursian giants. This is a Left Handed Path tradition. In the Thursian tradition Fenrir represents primal forces and chaos.

Definition of Anticosmic

Anti-Cosmic Satanism, also known as Chaos-Gnostic Satanism and Anti-Cosmic Gnosticism, is a belief system that believes that the Demiurge imprisoned humans with Cosmic Chains, holding us back from our true freedom in Chaos and Limitlessness. It believes that through the liberation of our mortal chains, we will once more return to Tohu/Ain - nothingness

The Thursar, the Old Norse primordial Giants, are seen as the more destructive forces raised against that cosmic order of the creation even into the given final culmination of Ragnarök or Ragnarökkr.

Abby Helasdottir coined the term Rökkatru. This is separate from the Thursian path.

Rökkatru's primary focus was the third pantheon of underworld Gods. These include Hela, Loki, Angrboda, Sigyn, Fenrir, Jormundgand, Narvi and Vali, Surt, Mordgud, and Mengloth, among others.

Experience

In my personal experience in talking to people who worked with Fenrir. I've met a practioner who didn't think Loki was Fenrir's father. That Fenrir is not bound. He doesn't appear to be bound. He answers those who are strong and come in time of need. He is distant and quiet at first but will become more vocal over time.

I have also come across ideas of a priest and priestess of Fenrir. Priestess having deep connections with him. This tied into the concept that priestess had intimate and deep connections to gods and those of primal and primordial nature. Priest had deep connections to goddesses. This concept is in Greek mythology and heiros gamos.

Fenrir the one of primordial fire, chaos and the primal current. The one who is a shapeshifter. Father of wolves. Looks for those who are strong for he sees true strength. A test, a trial for those who are true. He is a serious deity. He sends a storm in his blessing.

And, some may be wondering (as I did initially) why 「寅」 appears to be mapped to 12 o'clock (the first position) in the clock in the first pic, instead of 「子」 as is usually the case, the reason is that that clock emphasises the Solar Term calculations.

Basically, something about calculating the sun's ecliptic longitude, and 「立春」 (Start of Spring) happens to correspond to 「寅」 (the Tiger Zodiac) rather than 「子」 (the Rat Zodiac). It's quite a complicated thing and I'm not knowledgeable enough to expound on it further. Please read up more on “Solar Term” (Wiki link given above) if interested!

If we are just talking about a 24-hour time frame according to a Gregorian time-keeping system, and someone wants to map an Ancient Chinese time-keeping format to the modern clock, then starting with 「子」 is (usually) the way to go.

Glad to say I'm finally reciting the order of Ancient Chinese time-keeping correctly! Guess seeing cartoon Zodiac animals did help! 哈！(see above link for ref.)

is it true that skoll chases the moon and not the sun?

The short answer is that it appears to be "no." As far as we can tell, Skoll/Sköll chases the sun.

Grímnismál says:

Sköll heitir ulfr, er fylgir inu skírleita goði til varna viðar, en annarr Hati, hann er Hróðvitnis sonr, sá skal fyr heiða brúði himins. 'A wolf is named Sköll who follows the bright-faced god to the wood-shelter, but the second is Hati, he is Hróðvitnir's son, that one shall (go) before the bright bride of the sky.'

('Wood-shelter' is taken to mean the trees on the horizon, that is, until setting.)

Snorri restates this in plainer prose language:

Þat eru tveir úlfar, ok heitir sá, er eftir henni ferr, Skoll. Hann hræðist hon, ok hann mun taka hana. En sá heitir Hati Hróðvitnisson, er fyrir henni hleypr, ok vill hann taka tunglit, ok svá mun verða. 'There are two wolves, and the one which goes after [the sun] is called Skoll. She fears him, and he will take her. And the other is called Hati Hróðvitnisson, who runs before her, and he wants to take the moon, and that will happen.'

So strictly speaking, neither of them chase the moon. According to both of these, Sköll follows behind the sun, and though Hati will eventually take the moon, his position is described as being in front of the sun.

It's not clear to me that the Grímnismál stanza couldn't be interpreted such that it skírleita goð could be Máni rather than Sól, though I agree the traditional interpretation is much more likely. The word goð 'god' reveals nothing about gender, as it's neuter in Old Norse. But while the word skírleitr 'bright-faced' could certainly apply to the moon in isolation, if someone says "the bright-faced one" and the sun is an option, we know they're talking about the sun. It would also indicate a situation where, while Sköll is chasing Máni, Sól is chasing Hati.

My interpretation of this is that the sun is flanked by wolves, and that the one following behind her will eventually get her, at which point the one who had been ahead of her will break off and get the moon.

For a long time this has been interpreted as referring to the phenomenon of "sun dogs," a phenomenon where the sun actually does appear to be flanked by two smaller sun-like bodies, caused by refraction of the sun's light. Conditions for sun dogs are not uncommon in Iceland. In Icelandic folklore, when they appear, it's said that "the sun is in úlfakreppa," meaning something like 'wolf-touble' or 'wolf-danger.'

In Vafþrúðnismál, it's Fenrir who gets the sun. Snorri also makes mention of a certain Mánagarmr, whom he calls the mightiest of the entire family of "jötnar in wolves' shape," presumably meaning something like 'moon-dog,' though Garmr is the name of a specific mythological dog and not a normal word for a dog (normally it means 'a tatter, rag'). This Mánagarmr is also supposed to swallow the moon. Since Snorri seems to present Hati and Mánagarmr as different, he may be contradicting himself. But it's also possible that while Hati captures the moon he doesn't eat him, leaving that to Mánagarmr; and it's also possible that they are the same and Snorri phrased it strangely; or else that he had two contradictory pieces of lore that he tried to fuse together.

My suspicion is that the precise identities of who did what here were rather fluid up until a late time.

Hmmm, once again, I guess this is more of a collection of thoughts over two specific things. What do I want my followers to know? As a whole, I feel that I'm pretty honest with people on here and don't hold back all that much. You all clearly know that from all my shit-posting. I guess that I want people to know that when it says I'm online here that I'm likely not actively ignoring anyone.

Along with this, if we are talking and don't respond right away, or drop off in a conversation that it isn't likely that I'm angry or uninterested in writing with you. Sometimes, I just do that especially when I'm trying to get things done here. I'm a very much an all or nothing person and some days I'll be able to get out 15 things in one day and other times I'm getting only one thing done a week. If I get distracted by chatting, I end up losing my writing momentum.

When I decided to come back, I didn't think that the RPC was going to be as active as it was 3 years ago. But boy, was I surprised. Admittedly, I kind of bit off more than I could chew when I made this blog and probably have taken on more mutuals than I should have. But, uncharacteristically, I'm not deterred by that, at all. I have genuinely enjoyed writing here again, and I've been more consistent about writing as I ever have been, and that's thanks to all of you. Everyone here makes me want to be here and I don't feel overwhelmed like I normally would. You have made it all so easy to be here, and for that; thank you.

De e få saker jag lyckas orka störa mig på nuförtiden, men när folk ska ”känslo-shamea” en tvillinggravid kvinna för att hon tycker att tvillingar kommer bli en för tung belastning för att orka med utan att veta bättre, och även känslo-shamea en för att man inte tycker det är kul med 3års perioden på sin förstfödde pga helt jävla knäckt av rövgraviditet.. då undrar jag vilken drömvärld man tror att man lever i.

Kvinnor har rätt till att tycka till om sin kropp och sitt liv, oavsett vad det gäller. Utan att nån ska döma hennes känslor bara föratt hon är kvinna och ”ska tycka om kvinnogrejer”. En kvinna är inte dömd till att älska ALLT med barn, bara för att hon är utrustad med livmoder. En kvinna tycker iaf jag är så mycket mer än så, som tex en egen speciell individ. Men biologin är som den är, vi kan inte byta. Vill man ha barn är det bara att offra sin kropp och hoppas på det bästa.

Och ibland blir det inte som tänkt. Ibland blir det kanske inga barn och ibland blir det kanske för många barn. Det är okej att bli ledsen över BÅDA. Och det är lika okej att komma över det i sin egen takt också.

Jag grinar fortfarande på kvällar över att jag kommer bli 3barnsmor. Jag skäms inte över att säga det o jag utmanar vilken jävel somhelst att komma o yttra sig när de hamnar i exakt samma skor som jag står i. (Alltså en människa som redan känner att hen har mening med livet och fullt med ambitioner utan att behöva barn för att må bra o fylla sin vardag med)

Att ens behöva säga att man älskar sitt barn är ett jävla mysterium. Funderar då mer över alla som BARA lägger ut bilder på sina barn och gång på gång ska berätta för omvärlden hur fantastiskt dom är och hur mycket man älskar sina barn. Vem fan tror nåt annat? Människan som art är programmerad att tycka det? En kvinna FÅR ha andra intressen än sina barn utan att vara en dålig mamma? En kvinna FÅR fortfarande vara en egen individ fast hon har skapat ett nytt liv.

Jag tvivlar inte på att jag kommer axla 3barnsmor lika bra som jag axlar 1barnsmor i dagsläget. Jag tycker även att jag ger mitt nuvarande barn ett drömliv, ett liv jag själv skulle velat ha som barn. Ett liv mer berikat än måånga skärmberoende bortskämda sönderdaltade ungar där ute. Men är jag less EN dag efter rätt så godkända motgångar kan jag tycka, då ska andra mammor tycka att jag är ful i mun och otacksam.

A vetuvad. Ibland är jag ful i mun, ibland höjer jag rösten mot mitt barn. Ibland flyr jag ut till stallet för att slippa bli klängd på. Jag tar ansvar för att ta hand om migsjälv och sätta stopp så jag sedan kan ta hand om min familj igen. Och att ta hand om sigsjälv som mamma är nästan skamligt också. Man ska helst lida och se förjävlig ut, klippa kort hår ha pösiga kläder o va lite överviktig. Då är man en BRA mamma. Och vet ni vad. Det är OCKSÅ okej. Lika okej som att ta egentid varje dag till att träna upp sin kropp igen, ha egna intressen och träffa vänner utan att ha med barnet.

Jag skulle säga att familjen jag skapat har ett sånt fantastiskt samarbete, harmoni och ömsesidig respekt. Man kan absolut skämmas för sitt barn ibland men Lukas är jag (om jag jämför) otroligt stolt över hur modig, givmild och klok han blivit. Jag är stolt för att det har kommit sig av enormt slit, upprepning och tålamod som inte alltid funnits. Men man har gjort det, för att han inte ska skrika bland folk, slå eller bita andra, våga träffa nytt folk, äta det som bjuds och tacka för maten, säga förlåt när det blir fel och ge bort sin bästa leksak en stund till nån som vill leka med den. Man har lixom igen att vara sträng men rättvis.

Och det är det som gör mig rädd, att kvaliteten på närvaro, tålamod och tid till att lära viktiga läxor kommer bli sämre med två individer till på nacken. Det är alltså inte en fråga om huruvida man kommer älska sina barn MINDRE för att man har ”för många” barn att älska.

Utan om jag verkligen kommer räcka till till den kvaliteten jag VILL ge mina barn.

Därför mina kära läsare skriver jag frispråkigt om helvettesgraviditeter, sorgen över ”för många barn” och dagar jag aldrig mer vill se ett barn. Och jag kommer inte hålla igen språket framöver heller för att vissa väljer att tolka mina dåliga dagar som att man är en dålig människa. Känner man mig på riktigt förstår man också vad jag menar, mina värderingar och vad jag går för. Jag kommer inte lägga mig ner o knarka bort mitt liv för att jag fick ett barn mer än planerat. Jag kommer bara grina av utmattning på nätterna när ingen ser, och sedan stiga upp lite starkare nästa dag, redo för att älska domhär skitjobbiga skapelserna som kommer ur min kropp 🤱
