Chapter 3: Help Wanted
Tumblr media
Mouse quickly trotted to catch up to their new rescuer. Looking back every once in a while, to make sure that they weren't being chased.
"What's the deal with those guys?" Elizabeth huffed.
"Just an aggressive pack of Mightyeena. They love picking on small weak Pokémon like you." The Poltchageist said.
"Excuse you, we're not weak!" Elizabeth snapped. "We couldn't fight back because the leader was playing dirty."
"Some leaders are like that." The tea caddy sighed. "And that's why I prefer to be alone." They open the door to their cottage and stands aside. "After you." Mouse silently pads pass the Poltchageist and entered the home, followed by the housekeeper. The Eevee pauses to admire the interior of the cottage. Crystals and herbs hung from the ceiling.
"Wow... this is your home?" Ellie asked.
"Yes, I grow and dry herbs to sell for medical needs in towns." The Poltchageist said. They took a bundle of herbs down to grind in a mortar and pestle.
"We never properly thanked you for helping us. Or even introduced ourselves." Elizabeth said. "My name is Elizabeth, by the way. And this is my friend, Mouse." Mouse signed 'thank you'.
"Pleasure to meet you two. I'm Lavender Tea. And, don't mention it." Lavender said. The Poltchageist fills their carrier with jars of herbs they've grounded up. "So, where are you two headed? And where's your parents little Eevee?" The Eevee looks around, then points to themself. "Yes, you."
Mouse looks away. "They... The kid doesn't have any parents." Ellie answered. "If anything, I could be considered their mother, but there's only so much I can do to help them."
"I see... Well, what do you two plan to do?" Lavender asks.
"We would like to find someone to help us." Elizabeth said. "Although we can normally take care of ourselves just fine, we do need help figuring out how things work here, since this land is new to us."
"There's a town not to far from here, I can take you two when I'm finished with this next few batches." Lavender explained.
Mouse looked around the cottage and sniffed the burning incense that filled the room. Plants growing on the window sill. The walls soft with moss.
"So, you live here by yourself?" Ellie asked.
"Yep. Living off the grid is much better, for me at least, because there's no expectations put on you, and the only thing you need to worry about is forest ruffians." Lavender said. the Poltchageist poured the grounded herbs into a small glass jar. "Let's go, to Baram Town." They pick up the basket filled with herbs and lead the duo out of the house.
When the trio reached the town, Mouse's muscles were tense as they passed the town entrance. So many Pokémon gathered in small groups, each one tending to their own group of friends, catting amongst each other. Deciding what jobs to take on, arguing over food preferences, and laughing in conversation.
"So, what do we do here?" Elizabeth asked.
"We make a flyer to get the Eevee into an apprenticeship somewhere, or would you rather settle with a foster family." Lavender said. "So, Are you looking to get into a rescue team, shop stalks, or just look for foster parents?"
The Eevee and hilt just looked at each other. "We'll take the rescue apprentice thing." Elizabeth answered.
"Good." The Poltchageist wrote stuff on a poster paper, and stuck it to the bulletin board.
It reads:
"Young masked Eevee looking for rescuer apprenticeship. Meet me at Garura's Cafe."
"This way." Lavender Tea lead Mouse and Elizabeth to a cafe. "I'll keep watch until you two get picked up by a rescue team. But until then, I'm afraid this is were we part ways."
Mouse looked with shock under their mask. "Wait... You-you're not coming with us?" Elizabeth asked.
"No, I have my own place in life. Like I told you, I'm an solo herbalist." Lavender explained. "If we ever cross paths, don't be afraid to say 'Hi', or buy one of my remedies." They pick up their jarred medicine and hovered over to a booth, that was in eyesight of Mouse's seat.
Mouse and Ellie just sat there, chatting, waiting for their new job.
I wonder how how the princess and everyone else is doing...

Christmas has always been your favourite time of the year. You never grew out of your child-like wonder for the holiday. It meant seeing your family all together in one place. Sharing and making new memories. Not even after you married the Grinch himself, Aemond, did you lose it.
Aemond was different. He hated the holidays. For him, it was always family drama. Every year his hopes were crushed to be noticed or to receive love from Viserys. All his father’s attention was on his half-sister and her sons. His cousins, he loathed with every fibre of his being.
He had to endure Aegon’s idiotic behaviour all year, but it turned into bullying when they were involved. They always wore these malicious grins when they knew he was at his breaking point. Once he acted on his anger, it cost him his eyesight as Lucerys, as weak as he may have looked at the time, punched him in the eye as they wrestled outside in the snowy yard. He could clearly remember the red-soaked snow beneath him. The agonizing scream of his mother.
He liked this Christmas. He was far away from home. His mom, sister, and baby Daeron were at his side, as he opened his presents in peaceful silence. No one would instantly destroy them or hog them until they drove home again. He liked the quiet of the hospital at Christmas. Maybe that is why he became a surgeon nearly twenty years later.
But his world was turned upside down when he met you. Your first Christmas together you pouted at him as he told you he had taken over a shift for a colleague. He reasoned that his colleague had two little children at home. You nodded grudgingly. His mother had gotten used to him working, but not you. After your second year being exclusive, you finally gave up and accepted it. Even going out of your way and bringing him a small gift and home-cooked food to the hospital.
But now, two years married with a little one, he slowly understood his mother’s words. “You will see, darling. As soon as you have kids on your own, the magic will take over.” And indeed it did. He began to understand why you loved Christmas so much. He could feel it deep in his heart. The love and fuzzy feeling. The warmth surrounded him. He slightly regretted being a Grinch for the duration of his relationship with you.
Every light and every ornament sparkled like a brilliant crystal. But nothing looked more beautiful than his wife and three-month-old daughter staring at the Christmas tree with wide sparkling eyes. He surprised everyone, even himself when he sent a text message to the family group chat asking for a united Christmas dinner. Alicent had facetimed him. Tears streaming down her face as she thanked him. She had tried for years, ever since he went to med school, to celebrate Christmas just with him and his siblings. She would have gone anywhere so he wouldn’t see his father or his half-sister and her family.
So here they stood, Alicent, Heleana, Daeron, even Aegon, who was surprisingly sober for once, and his wife holding their daughter as they stared at the ornamented tree. A mountain of presents is placed under it. Most of them are from Alicent for her only granddaughter. Aemond had complained she was spoiling his daughter. Alicent just pets his cheek softly. She grinned at him and simply spoke, “No.”
Mealenys stared with wide sparkling blue eyes at the many lights on the tree. His wife leaned against his chest as she whispered to their daughter about all the new gifts she would get. His mother took no doubt, thousands of photos of everyone.
He felt like a little kid for the first time in years. He could feel his younger self was healing. Maybe, the magic of Christmas existed after all. He slowly began to believe as he held his small family in his arms.

Five minutes - Kol Mikaelson - The Originals
Tumblr media
Warnings: illness, death, violence
Masterlist
Requests are open :)
~-~-
(Y/N) held her breath, smiling at her husband, Kol, as he left the abattoir in the hunt for Marcel Gerard. As soon as he left though, her smile dropped as she began coughing up blood into the tissue she had tucked under her leg away from anyone's eyesight.
She had been hiding her illness for months as she knew her family, the Mikaelson’s, would be overly concerned as vampires don’t get ill. It was against the genetic make-up of the creatures of the night to get ill.
At first it started off as a headache but (Y/N) put it down to a hangover even though she knew she only had a beer the night before. It wasn’t long before the nausea and fatigue sent in. However, (Y/N) is over 500 years old, she knew when to hide her weaknesses in aid of others. But hiding things can’t last forever, (Y/N) was about to find that out the hard way.
Rebekah stormed through her home shouting any name of her family she could think of when she saw (Y/N) and called her, drawing her attention from the tissue to her sister-in-law.
“Rebekah, what can I do you for,” (Y/N) said from the sofa, ticking the tissue in between the cushions before Rebekah could see.
“Have you seen the crossbow from the dining room. Nik asked me to bring it to him.” (Y/N) shook her head and gestures for Rebekah to sit down so she could calm her slightly as she was quite agitated. “I suppose I could drop for a minute. Move over.”
“Yeah, sure.”
Rebekah sat down quite heavily with agitation, before shuffling the blanket she was sitting on from underneath her. Her hand drew something else up though; the tissues (Y/N) has been hiding. “What’s this?”
The younger vampire moved to snatch them back from her sister but broke down in a coughing fit from the sudden movement. It took a moment for her to re-catch her breath but she knew that her secret had been exposed.
“Are you coughing up blood? Because that's not good, you're a vampire. This doesn't happen.” Rebekah fretted, standing up again as she knew that she couldn't stay still whilst these thoughts were running through her head.
“Don't make a fuss, Freya doesn’t know what is is, but she is looking and she says there is a chance I’ll survive.”
“A chance? Only a chance!” Rebekah said, her voice suddenly softing as she realised her best friend and sister could die. “Does Kol know?”
(Y/N) went to speak but was interrupted by a voice behind her, “Does Kol know what? Talking about me,are you, Darling?”
“Tell him, he needs to know. I’ll tell the others but you need to tell him.”
(Y/N) shuffled on the sofa to make room for her husband to sit next to her comfortably. She gestured for him to sit down, smiling sadly as he did so.
“(Y/N), Darling, You’re scaring me.”
As she started to tell her husband about her struggles with her failing health, all he could do was look down and try to make sense of what he was being told. He was only broken from his daze when he felt a limp body crash into his side.
~-~-
The flames of the hundreds of candles, warmly lit up the abattoir floor as Freya Mikaelson continued to chant. She knew she only had this one chance to save (Y/N)’s life and even this spell had major risks. But she had to try. She had to keep to the promise she had made Niklaus when he found out about this illness their sister suffered with.
The blood pooled under the paper moved towards the ring of salt in the middle of the room. Slowly it was joined by the pool of blood underneath the feather directly opposite where the paper rested.
Pages of the Original Witch’s grimoire began to flicker as the blood started to rise upwards, combining to make one, and the chanting of Latin grew stronger and louder.
Until it all stopped.
The room was silent, the blooding falling back towards the floor, and the pages sat still. The candles no longer permitted light and remnants of smoke from where the flames once sat.
~-~-
(Y/N) sat up from where she was lying on the floor to find herself alone. The place she was in was void of colour, furniture and people. The only two things she could see was a key and a door with two locks, one on each side.
Quickly, she grabbed it, inspecting very scratch and dent on the key when she saw words inscribed on the opposite side: one is life, on is death; choose a side and take a breath.
Standing up, with the key still in hand, (Y/N) froze and inspected the white void around her, looking for any other signs of life. She was taken from her inspection when she heard Kol.
(Y/N), Darling. Please. Please come back to me. I can't be without you.
One by one, she heard different voices call out to her asking, no begging, for her to wake up. Each more distant from the last as she tried to aim her focus onto the door and her impending choice.
She didn't even notice the silence until she heard the voice of her local priest start to speak: “Today, we are gathered here to celebrate the life of (Y/N) Mikaelson.”
(Y/N) froze.
Her family thought she was dead? Was she dead? Was this room life final cruel joke on her to make her think she had a chance at happiness before she was sucked into an eternity of torture for her lifetimes of sin.
In her haze, (Y/N) didn't realise that she had placed the key into one of the old locks, and therefore choosing that path. She stood back as the key began to turn itself and the door began to open into a forest.
Hesitantly, she stepped inside, finding herself looking at a mother and young child, only seven years old at most.
“Hello?” she said stepping towards the two” Sorry, I don't mean to bother you, but could you tell me where am I?”
“You're in the bayou, in New Orle-” the woman froze halfway through her sentence when she turned to face the stranger to find it wasn't a stranger at all. “(Y/N)?”
“My God! Hayley, ” she stepped forward to hug the woman she had grown close too. ”Who's this then?”
“It’s Hope.”
(Y/N) shook her head as she stepped backwards in shook. Hope was only two years old when she last saw her. It can't have been five years. It had only been five minutes.”
“Somethings wrong.”
~-~-
After agreeing to tell Hayley what had happened when they returned home, the three Mikaelsons made their way back into New Orleans to the Abbatoir to hopefully find the other members of their clan.
It would be in their luck that they were all present, however, they were arguing like there was no tomorrow.
“Guys!” Hayley shouted as she walked in, temporarily stopping the yelling, “something has happened. It’s (Y/N)!”
Klaus walked forward, trying to intimidate Hayley but she stood her ground, “What about her?” He all but growled.
It had been agreed that nobody would speak her name after the funeral as Kol was still distraught over losing his wife. Nightmares constantly plagued the Original. Not even Freya’s herbal remedies could ease his pain.
“I’m alive!” (Y/N) said in an almost whisper, trying not to frighten anyone with her presence but her efforts were for naught when she saw the expressions of her family.
Kol sped forward, grabbing the woman who looked like his wife and sounded like his wife by the throat before slamming her into a wall, “Who are you?!”
“Ireland, 1498.” She croaked out.” You promised that you would kill anyone-”
Suddenly she was dropped and pulled into a bone crushing hug. Kol holding her tightly and never wanting to let her go again.
The murmurs of her family grew stronger behind her until Hayley spoke up, telling everyone to leave the married couple alone to reconnect once more.

For the Hot Mess One ---- Quartz:
Although the Greeks called Quartz krystallos, meaning “ice,” the name may be Germanic in origin. Prized for millennia as a worker of magic and a potent shamanic tool, Native Americans call it the brain cells of Grandmother Earth. Containing every color, Clear Quartz works on multidimensional levels of being. Generating electromagnetism and dispelling static electricity, it is an extremely powerful healing and energy amplifier. Absorbing, storing, releasing, and regulating energy, a Quartz crystal, when held, doubles your biomagnetic field, and acupuncture needles coated in Quartz increase efficacy by 10 percent. Working at a vibrational level attuned to specific requirements of the user, Quartz takes energy to the most perfect state possible, before the disease set in, acting as a deep soul cleanser, and connects the physical dimension with the mind.
Working like a cosmic computer, Quartz stores information and has the ability to dissolve karmic seeds. It enhances metaphysical abilities and attunes to spiritual purpose. This stone is found in many shapes and formations, all of which share generic properties but also have specific, and unique, properties. Quartz points and formations have deeply significant shapes according to how fast they formed. In addition to carrying the generic properties of Wands, a long, Clear Quartz wand, natural or shaped, emits a positive and negative electrical charge. Strongly amplifying energy, it focuses this where it is needed, or draws it off as appropriate. A Quartz wand reaches the underlying cause of disease and transforms this. It indicates, and treats, areas of blockage or weakness in the physical body or the aura.
Note: Quartz can have an exceedingly high vibration according to type.

Ways to take Care of your Eyes
Your eyes are the most attractive features of your face. They are more than just a visual organ that helps you see the world. They smile, laugh, cry, when words fail, our eyes express our feelings and thoughts beautifully. You eyes are the most important part of your body, if your eyes are separated from you even for a moment, and then there will be darkness in your life. Therefore, protecting your vision is one of the most important things in maintaining the quality of your life. However, unfortunately, most people do not think about their eyes as much as they pay attention to their faces. Our eyes start getting weaker due to the constant presence of mobiles, TVs and laptops. In addition, our stubborn lifestyle, toxic environment and improper diet make things worse because of all these things, increases the risk of vision loss. In addition, wrinkles, dark circles, facial swelling etc. have become common problems nowadays. Taking care of your eyes, like your skin and face, will ensure that you stay protected against age-related diseases such as cataract, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration etc.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 2.2 billion people worldwide suffer from eye disorders. Of these, there are one billion cases, which could have been prevented, but they are left untreated. The WHO report has given a warning that, as people age, the number of people suffering from blindness will increase.
However, if proper eye care is taken from time to time, then the problems arising from it can be stopped to a large extent. In addition, to protect the eyes from diseases, it is important to clean the eyes and perform eyes exercise. Vitamin-A rich food should also be taken for eye care, which improvise the eyesight and protects the person from eye problems.
To protect your eyesight and keep your eyes healthy, follow these tips given below:
1.     DO REGULAR EYE CLEANING:
Due to carelessness of the eyes, problems such as watery eyes, burning, itching, redness of eyes, yellowing, swollen eye, blurred appearance can occur. Regular eye cleaning should be done to protect the eyes from these problems. For this, wash eyes thoroughly with cold clean water 3-4 times a day.
2.     REMOVE YOUR EYE MAKEUP AT THE END OF THE DAY:
Always take time to remove eye makeup before bedtime. Never sleep with makeup. If you sleep with eyeliner or foundation, it can cause pain in your eyes. Sleeping with make-up at night stops the pores around the eyes, which can cause cavities and may need to be removed by a doctor. Keep makeup remover pads near your bed when you are too tired for your nighttime cleansing routine.
3.     PROTECTION FROM UV LIGHT:
Exposure to UV rays of sun can cause damage to the eyes. Damage cause by UV radiation to the eyes is cumulative, this means it builds up over our lifetime and can have a permanent effect on our eyes and eyesight. The UV rays may cause macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss among aged persons. It may also may also cause some kinds of cataracts. Sunglasses prevent retinal damage. They also protect the delicate skin of the eyelid to prevent wrinkles and skin cancer. They can help reduce the risk of eye-related problems such as cataracts, pinguecula and rashes. Wear good quality sunglasses that block UV rays up to 99–100%.
4.     USE OF GOOD QUALITY PRODUCTS
Shades or goggles should be used on the eyes while going out to protect the eyes from dust and dirt and sunlight. Also, use only good quality products for eye make-up. Makeup should be done on the eyes according to the need, ie, to avoid applying cheap products like eyeliner contaminated with antimony.
5.     QUIT SMOKING:
Tobacco smoking is directly associated with several adverse health effects including eye problems. Tobacco smoking is linked with heart disease and lung cancer for a long time, but most of you may be unaware that smoking can lead to loss of vision.  Studies show that smoking tobacco increases the risk of age-related macular degeneration in eyes, Dry Eye Syndrome, cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Smokers are also at high risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration. This can cause optic nerve damage, which can also lead to blindness.
6.     GIVE YOUR EYES PROPER REST:
Your eyes also need rest like you. Avoid or minimize strenuous activities such as staring at a computer or phone screen for too long. This can cause tension in your eyes and can cause problems like blurred vision, dry eyes, headaches etc. In addition, you can use home remedies, such as placing cucumber slices on the eyes, to enhance the relaxation process.
7.     ENOUGH SLEEP:
Take enough sleep everyday because lack of sleep is not only detrimental to your health, it can eventually lead to more serious eye problems such as glaucoma. In due course, glaucoma can lead to loss of vision. Shortage of sleep can cause dry eye, a condition when there is no adequate tears to lubricate your eyes. Dry eye can may lead to eye pain, light sensitivity, itching, redness, or even blurred vision. An eight hours sleep each night gives your eyes the opportunity to rest, relax, heal, and replenish so that they can stay healthy.
8.     EYE EXERCISES:
Look at the eyes once towards the ceiling. Look at the floor once. Once on the right side and once on the left. Rotate the eyes in rounding eyes first in one direction and then in the other direction. This will exercise your eyes. Also, to strengthen the skin around the eyes, one should lightly massage under the eyes with almond oil. It also removes dark circles under the eyes. Also, anti wrinkle cream should be applied under the eyes. The ingredients in anti wrinkle cream are vitamin C and green tea, which is beneficial in preventing dark eye circles. ALSO READ: 8-EXERCISE FOR EYES TO GET RID OF GLASSES
  9.     PROPER DISTANCE FROM COMPUTER:
For the health of the eyes, it is important to work in the right light, whether you are working on a computer or studying. One can complain of eye pain due to constantly looking at something very closely or sitting in front of the computer for too long. Therefore, do not force your eyes continuously. Take frequent breaks.
10.     SUITABLE DIET:
A good eye care starts with the right diet. A diet rich in vitamin A, vitamins C and E, zinc, lutein, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants is very beneficial for your eyes and can help avoid age-related eye problems. Include foods such as carrots, beets, oranges and green leafy vegetables in your regular diet. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon and tuna are very effective in reducing dangerous macular degeneration. Antioxidants may reduce the risk of cataract.
Lists of different foods are given below that you should never miss to protect yourself from eye diseases:
a)    Green Leafy Vegetables And Fruits: Vitamin A is the most important vitamin for the eyes, lack of it can cause night blindness. Fat-soluble vitamin A is most needed by the retina. Vitamin A is found most commonly in green and leafy vegetables. The carotene element present in green vegetables is converted into vitamin A. Therefore, eat spinach, mint, fenugreek, beans, etc. The intake of vitamin C helps to repair eye damage. Guava, oranges, pineapples, watermelons and grapes contain sufficient amounts of vitamins A and C.
b)    Dry Fruit: It is also beneficial to take dry fruits to improve the eyesight. Dry fruits like raisins are rich in vitamin A, beta-carotene, and carotenoids, which are very important for eye health. The anti-oxidant present in it helps the eyes to fight free radicals. Eating raisins daily does not cause weakness of eyes, muscle damage, cataract etc. Dry apricots have an abundance of vitamins A, B complex and C that are beneficial for the eyes.
c)     Zinc Food: Zinc is very good for your eye health. Zinc helps the retina like that of vitamin A. Without zinc, the eyes do not utilize enough vitamins as needed, so your eyesight starts to weaken as a result. Zinc is found in plenty in peanuts, yogurt, dark chocolate, sesame and cocoa powder etc. The ability to see remained the same throughout the age. For this, onion and garlic should be included in your meal.
d)   Selenium: If a person has a cataract problem, then he should take plenty of selenium. Selenium is an anti-oxidant and helps in absorption of vitamin E, which reduces the age-related eye health issue. Fish, grains, eggs, chicken, tuna, liver and garlic are good sources of selenium.
e)    Egg and Fish: Egg is very beneficial for the eyes. Elements called lutein and xanthine, which make carotenoids, are found in abundance in eggs more than any other substance. Eating one egg daily can prevent erosion in the eye cells due to the lack of carotenoids. Eggs are very beneficial for eyes. Eating one egg daily can prevent erosion in eye cells due to the lack of carotenoids. Omega 3 is found in plenty in fish, which is beneficial for eyesight.
f)      Almond Milk: Drink almond milk 3 times a week. It contains Vitamin E, which is beneficial in relieving eye disorders. Antioxidants like Vitamin E protect the eye lens from damage from free radicals. Vitamin E is found in all types of edible oils, and seeds.  Get into the habit of consuming them and include them in your daily diet.
11.     GET REGULAR EYE CHECKUPS:
Get your eyes checked regularly to maintain good eye health. Learn more about your eyes and when you go to your doctor, get information about the eyes from them. Knowing more about the eyes and learning how to prevent eye diseases will help you to control diseases. In addition to making sure that your applying right medication, updated your glasses or contact lenses, regular eye checkups are also necessary to maintain eye health. Most of the serious eye conditions such as cataract and Age-related Muscular Degeneration (AMD) can be treated easily and successfully, if diagnosed and treated quickly. If left untreated, these diseases can cause severe vision loss and blindness. In addition, a comprehensive eye examination, including dilating the pupil of the eye, can help detect eye diseases that often provide no warning, such as glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. There is no problem in the eyes, or not, but periodic eye checkups should be done. Diabetic patients, in particular, should undergo eye checkups from time to time, as diabetes has negative effects on the eyes and blindness can occur if diabetes is prolonged.
If you do not have any problem related to eyesight, then you have to visit the eye doctor:
·        Every 5-10 years between the ages of 20 and 30
·        Every 2–4 years between 40–65 years of age
·        After the age of 65, see the eye doctor every 1-2 years.
You can take care of your eyes by following some tips given below:
OTHER MEASURES
·        If you feel fatigue in the eyes, soaking cotton wool in rose water and keeping, it on the eyes gives relief to the eyes.
·        Rubbing both palms and places the warm palms on the eyes for some time.
·        While working at the computer, position your chair according to the height of the computer. Which does not put too much emphasis on the eyes and never watch TV in the dark, it causes a lot of stress on the eyes.

All My Life, for You - Ch. 8:
Fic Description:
Mi-Cha and Saeyoung have been happily married for 5 years and their lives have never been happier. The same could be said for Saeran who is now in a much healthier place than he was a few years ago. The twins are close once again, their lives are healthy and normal for the most part. It would seem the picture perfect happily ever after, if it weren’t for the fact that someone who has been looking for them for a long time is about to make an unwelcome appearance.
Saeyoung has two things in this world he has sworn to protect, and nothing is going to stop him from keeping his promise this time.
Relationships: Saeyoung Choi/MC (named), Saeran Choi/OC
Chapter Description:
The trio arrive home safe and sound and the boys get to work. Some light is shed on exactly who they are dealing with. Unknown manages to help in an unconventional way.
AO3 Link | First Chapter
After Saeyoung has properly cleared the security checks, the trio pass through the expansive garage and into the household/bunker where they’ve lived together for the past several years. This is home for all of them, but the dead silence and darkness leaves a strange unfamiliarity to the place. The air has a slight staleness to it after being devoid of life for a few days. Luckily this is easily remedied with a few voice commands for the lights and central air. Mi-Cha and Saeyoung dump their suitcases unceremoniously in the living room while Saeran opts to head straight down the hallway to his bedroom with his.
Mi-Cha plops herself down on the plush red couch, letting out a long sigh as she stares up at the ceiling and yawns. “Long drives make me so tired,” she says.
Saeyoung chuckles, “You weren't even the one driving, I’m the one that should be tired.”
“You love driving, plus I'm pretty sure you require like ⅓ the amount of sleep as a normal human being.”
“Are you calling me weird?” Saeyoung pretends to be offended.
“No, baby. I’m calling you extraordinary .” She says, standing once again to give her husband a light embrace.
“Ready to get to work?” Saeran asks his brother from the hallway, having returned from his bedroom. “I already started our computers, so whenever you’re ready,” he adds before turning into their now shared, glass-enclosed work area.
Mi-Cha gives Saeyoung another quick squeeze and releases him, patting him on the shoulder as she passes by him and heads into the kitchen. “You go get to work, I’ll bring you guys some lunch.”
The boys settle into their work stations, previously this room had been just Saeyoung’s work area, but after Saeran moved in the older twin rearranged the room and purchased Saeran a new setup since his had been lost in the dissolution of Mint Eye. At the time it had been almost a peace offering, a testament to the fast that Saeyoung wanted his brother in his life and wouldn't stop trying to prove it to him. Saeran didn’t use it at first, not sure how he felt about working back to back with Saeyoung, but eventually, he warmed up to the idea.
After the twins started taking freelance jobs together they both realized the value of another set of eyes. Saeran could spot a missing character in Saeyoung’s code that had been stumping him for weeks and Saeyoung had a lot of suggestions on how Saeran could organize and streamline his workflow. Together they had become even better than they had been apart, finally able to play on each other's strengths and weaknesses instead of battling against each other. It was different for both of them to have someone else to rely on, but nice.
The twins pick up where they left off. Saeran resumes the search for his stalker, made much more convenient by his usual monitor setup as opposed to one laptop screen. He had reviewed the public CCTV footage from that night, but what he really needed was the footage from the club. Hacking the public CCTV had been a breeze but he was having a harder time hacking into the clubs security system, where he knew the best shots of the two people he saw that night would be.
“What kind of club has security this tight?” Saeran wonders allowed in frustration as he hammers away at the impressive firewall the club has.
Saeyoung glances over his shoulder and hops up “Oh! I almost forgot.” he walks over to his brother's workstation. “May I?” he poses.
“Sure?” Saeran says doubtfully, moving out of the way to give Saeyoung access to his keyboard.
He watches as Saeyoung enters a few quick commands and the wall comes down no problem.
“How did you do that?” Saeran asks, slightly exasperated.
“That club’s security was one of my jobs a few years ago, some high-profile heiresses had been known to frequent the place at the time and their daddy’s paid a pretty penny to upgrade the security to keep any creeps away from them. Surprised they’re still using it honestly.”
Saeran chuckles shortly “How is that you still find ways to make my job harder, even now that we work together?”
“Hey!” Saeyoung exclaims, heading back to his desk. “It’s totally not my fault this time.”
Saeran begins to flip through footage from the night before and mumbles “It never was.”
Saeyoung smiles, and after a few minutes, turns his attention back to his task of hacking into the cameras around their childhood home to try to get an idea of what kind of activity could be going on there. Unfortunately, he doesn’t get very far before realizing that’s going to be impossible. “They're all out…”
Saeran swings around in his chair. “What do you mean?” He wheels over next to his brother and looks at the map Saeyoung has open on one of his many screens then types in an access point where he knows a camera should be. Nothing. He checks the data log. “Disabled two weeks ago?” He types in another, same thing. Saeyoung watches as his brother checks a few more, before finding one that's still running, about 3 blocks away from the house. “Anything within a few blocks has been shut down,” Saeran says, confirming what his brother already knew but that Saeran had to check for himself.
Saeyoung nods. “Any camera even remotely near the house is down. That doesn’t make any sense, the only people with access to the CCTV systems would be people like us or-” and his eyes go wide.
“The government,” Saeran says, finishing the thought.
“This isn’t a coincidence” Saeyoung states.
They both know what it means. Saeyoung stands and begins a slow pace around the room “I don’t understand, why us? Why now?”
“You know why us…” Saeran deadpans, turning around in his chair and watching his brother.
“Yea... I know but, why does he still think we’re a threat? It's been 26 years, we haven't caused him any trouble. We-"
Saeran stops him "He doesn't care, the threat we pose to him is in our very existence. He's never going to stop. Maybe it just took him this long to find us. Maybe someone from the agency sold you out, whatever the reason, I think it's safe to say we know who's behind this now and we need to be extremely careful."
"Yea… any luck with the club's footage?" Saeyoung asks.
Saeran wheels back over to his side of the room. "Footage from last night is still downloading. I'm hoping I can get some clues into what I - er, what Unknown saw during the switch. What he was warning me about"
Saeyoung goes back to his computer, he’ll admit he hasn’t been keeping as many tabs on their father as he probably should have been. The intrusive thoughts start again. I’ve become careless, this is all my fault.
Mi-Cha enters the room with two plates of sandwiches finding both boys with their faces only centimeters from their monitors. Saeyoung is typing away vigorously, his brow is furrowed. Saeran is closely watching surveillance video of a street corner. “You two sit with your noses in your screens and wonder why your eyesight sucks” she teases.
Neither twin acknowledges her poke at fun as they thank her for her offering and return to their posts.
“That bad huh?” She tries.
”We’re pretty sure this has something to do with our father.” Saeyoung fills her in.
A chill runs down Mi-Cha’s spine, although not that any of their potential enemies were unthreatening, but the Prime Minister bears a certain foreboding aura about him that not even RIka or the agency could compete with. He was above the law. Hell, he practically was the law.
“Do you think this has something to do with him running for president again?” Mi-Cha asks
“He’s running again?” Saeran asks, obviously surprised.
“He announced it this morning, I just saw it on the news.”
Saeyoung pulls up articles confirming what his wife saw.
“He fell out of the race quickly last time but he’s even more popular than he used to be. Especially after he pulled that publicity stunt with helping find homes for all those orphans last month.”
Saeran scoffs. “Well, isn't that ironic?” he says venomously.
“He just loves children doesn't he?” Saeyoung adds, matching his brother’s tone.
“I’ll say,” Mi-Cha responds sympathetically. “Anyway, since a big chunk of his supporters come from all his campaigning with “Save the Kids” it makes sense he’d come after you guys now. If people found out about what kind of father he truly is…”
“It would destroy him and oh, what a shame that would be,” Saeran says in a distantly familiar taunting voice, that neither Saeyoung or Mi-Cha have heard in quite a while.
“What are you thinking?” Saeyoung turns to him just in time to see his brother place his hand on his forehead and hiss.
“You ok?” Mi-Cha inquires?
“Y-Yea, I just… have a headache. I’m gonna go take something for it. I’ll be right back.” Saeran excuses himself.
When Mi-Cha is sure Saeran is out of earshot, she turns to her husband. “He’s worrying me, it’s been a long time since he switched like this, I think it happened this morning also.”
Saeyoung nods. “I’m worried too. It makes sense though, tensions are high right now. Just be ready in case he switches fully.”
"I should be the one telling you that," Mi-Cha tells him, "Unknown likes me, remember?"
“How could I forget?” Saeyoung answers before sighing at his wife’s point "Do you think he’ll ever forgive me?”
Mi-Cha purses her lips and hugs Saeyoung’s head to her side as he is still seated and runs her fingers through his curls. “It’s hard to say, he obviously hasn’t been one for talking anytime he’s showed up. But with everything he went through, it's no wonder.” She sighs, “But Saeran’s not stupid and he knows him the best that anyone can, so if he says Unknown might be changing, then I’d like to believe him.”
“Yea, me too. I know he wouldn’t say something like that unless he thought it was true, with Unknown slipping through more often, I’m guessing we'll find out soon enough.”
“Just be ready,” She tells him.
“Hey! That’s my line!” Saeyoung whines.
Mi-Cha giggles, “Not anymore! Now eat your lunch.”
“Yes, Ma’am!” Saeyoung teases turning his attention back to his computer.
Mi-Cha leaves the workroom, finding Saeran in the hallway on the phone, evidently finishing up a phone call.
“Thanks, Dr. Lee.” He says into the receiver
“Yea, Thursday is still good, and I’ll try the journaling thing for sure. See you then.” He finishes up and returns his phone to his pocket.
Mi-Cha smiles at him politely. “Sorry, didn't mean to interrupt.”
“No problem, I just wanted to get Dr. Lee’s opinion on the…”
“Switching?” She finishes for him.
“Yea.”
“What did she say?” Mi-Cha pries gently.
“That I ``should attempt to seize the opportunity to create a better harmony amongst my system.`` and that my alter reaching out to me first is something that I should take as a good sign towards achieving that.”
“That's great!” Mi-Cha says brightly, “I’m assuming you didn't go into all the details?”
He scoffs “Of course not.”
“Still, I’m glad you talked to her.” She smiles at him, “I’m really proud of you, you know that right?”
His eyes widen as he coughs out an awkward half-chuckle, “It’s nothing to be proud of, really.”
“But it is.” She argues, “Look, I know you’re basically programmed not to accept compliments but we’re both really proud of you, and the RFA too.”
He looks down, avoiding her eyes and feeling a bit embarrassed both from the call out and the compliment. “Thanks, Mi-Cha.”
“Anytime.”
“I’m gonna get back to work now.” He says, moving back to the workroom
“Don’t forget to eat!” She chides.
“Yes, Ma’am!” He obeys.
“You two are more alike than you even know,” Mi-Cha says under her breath as she retreats to her and Saeyoung’s bedroom to unpack.
--
Saeran settles back down at his workstation, finding the footage from the club fully downloaded. He presses play and moves the scrubber to around the time he knows he was there. Finding the part of the recording where he walks in, he sits back and watches. At first, it’s the part he remembers, walking in, trying to blend in and dancing . He feels his cheeks begin to heat up as the embarrassment from watching himself dance sets in.
Then comes the switch. It’s almost uncanny how obvious it is. He watches his form shift from an awkward shuffle to something much, much different. Something almost... sensual? His cheeks heat up some more and he really hopes Saeyoung isn’t watching over his shoulder, but he's too afraid to look.
He watches as his - or rather Unknown’s attention is drawn to someone entering. “That’s him!” He hisses out, Quickly whipping his head around to see if his brother heard him, no longer possessing the same fear from a moment ago. Luckily he finds Saeyoung with his headphones on, intently working on something. He breathes a sigh of relief.
“But then who was that other guy?” he continues to think out loud as he watches his alter on camera follow the hooded man from a distance, assessing the situation. While still dancing like that. He cringes again. The hooded man takes a seat at the bar, takes out his phone and proceeds to take what appears to be not so stealthy video recording of him. He’s sloppy, and he has no idea who he’s dealing with.
Unknown does not make it obvious he’s realized what's going on, of course. He bides his time, watching the man and takes a moment to 'send' that text to Saeran, warning him. Then he does something Saeran doesn't expect but isn't exactly surprised by. He watches as Unknown approaches a woman, innocent-looking enough but he knows how good he is with words. He whispers in her ear, she whispers back, they chat a little bit. He seems to ask her something, she pushes his chest playfully and shakes her head “no” but then he hands her a 50,000 Won note. Saeran gasps and thinks absently about the ins and outs of money management when someone else lives in your body. Back on screen, the girl stares at him for a second then shrugs, pocketing the money and approaching the now distracted man at the bar.
The woman does a marvelous job of distracting the man. “Picking girls to do your dirty work again I see,” Saeran mutters. He doesn’t know where his father managed to find this guy but he needs to fire him or hire more just like him rather. This would be a lot easier if all his lackeys were this oblivious. Unknown walks behind the man and swipes his phone off the bar, and head to where Saeran is pretty sure the bathroom is.
He returns a few minutes later and places the phone back in its spot he then looks directly into the camera and motions to his back pocket, and… winks ?
The girl stays a few minutes longer before excusing herself and going back to her group of friends. The man grabs his phone and looks around the club, assumingly for his target. But Unknown has managed to hide behind a speaker tower. The man gives up easily, leaving the club. Unknown approaches the girl again, whispers in her ear assumingly thanking her and pecks her cheek lightly. She bashfully covers her smile and nods. Saeran touches his lips as heat spreads over his face again.
And then he switches back, once again the awkward dancing boy in a crowd of strangers. The man he had confused with his stalker walks in and goes to sit with his date. He feels like a fool all over again. He watches himself leave and feels a little bad as the girl who helped out his alter looks around in confusion for him.
“You’re never gonna get a girlfriend like that bro.” Saeyoung’s voice comes from behind him.
“Ack! When did you get there? How long have you been watching?’ Saeran says, caught off guard.
“Long enough to watch you kiss a girl and then run away,” Saeyoung says incredulously.
“I didn’t kiss her!” Saeran defends
“But you ran.”
“I don’t even know her! I don't have time for this! I, I have to go check my pockets from yesterday.” Saeran gets up.
“Umm? Ok?” Saeyoung says confusedly as Saeran heads out of the room again.
Saeran returns a minute later with a small note written on a brown paper towel.
“What’s that?” Saeyoung asks.
“A note, from my other half.”
Saeyoung taps his chin thoughtfully “But I didn’t write you a note.”
Saeran rolls his eyes. “Not you. I’m talking about the other guy in my head.”
“I’m wounded, I thought I was your other half.” He whines, attempting to wrap his arms around Saeran, which he dodges effectively.
“Save it for your wife, would you?”
“Boo, fine.” Saeyoung gives in. “So what’s it say?”
“It says ``Shut up Saeyoung.``''
Saeyoung shrugs “Sounds about right.”
Saeran takes a deep breath “It actually says that the guy that had been following me had a physical description of me as well as a bunch of photos me from that night. He deleted them. He didn’t have enough time to properly go through everything on his phone but says it looks like they weren’t uploaded anywhere else and that there hadn’t been any communication with anyone for a few hours, so it should buy us some time and… shit.”
“What?” Saeyoung asks urgently.
Saeran hesitates “There was also a description of Mi-Cha, which he altered some details of, hoping to throw them off a bit, but not make it too obvious.”
Saeyoung peaks over his brother’s shoulder, now stone-faced. “Shit,” he says, voice thick with worry again, it was enough to know they were onto Saeran but Mi-Cha too? “That’s… bad.” he mutters “But kinda good? In a way, I guess. I don't like that they’re on our trail but… I guess I'm almost glad he was there? At least we have a better idea of what we’re dealing with thanks to him.”
“Me too, I don't think I could have been able to do what he did, My plan was just to run.” Saeran skims over the note again. “Oh, it looks like he also put a tracker on his phone.”
“Nice, we can start looking into that." Saeyoung pauses. "Um, is there anything about me?” he asks wearily.
“Nothing,” Saeran responds empathetically.
Saeyoung purses his lips and nods. “At least we know what they have on you guys, that’s more important anyway.”
They both fall silent and Saeyoung turns back to his screen. After a few moments Saeran speaks up again “Hey, Idiot” he calls, and Saeyoung turns to him, “You’re important too.”

The Right Thing (pt 3 of 3)
Wreck it Ralph AU 4274 words Content warnings: drugs/addiction, discussion of overdose/death, brief/mild sensuality Characters: Turbo, Make-it Mavis, mentions of Maribo ( @nijimarii‘s OC )
Premise: Mavis is released from the hospital following an incident that she remembers little about. Her best friend, however, knows exactly what happened... and has a hard-to-hear idea on how to prevent it all from happening again.
>Part 1< >Part 2<
Leaving the hospital was a headache. Literally and figuratively. Alongside the dull, throbbing pain in her head, the process was a numb, nauseating blur of things Mavis was not in the mood for.
When she woke for the second time, it was to the sensation of a nurse laying another blanket over her. She was asked how she felt, and some weird trivial questions to test her lucidity. After some prodding, she answered honestly, and told the nurse her head and stomach hurt, that her eyesight was stained a faint blue, and that her brain felt full of dead ends.
The nurse brought her some generic hospital food to help settle her belly. She ate it quietly while Turbo pretended to sleep in his chair. He was not fooling her -- if he was not snoring, he was not asleep. Still, he would not respond to anything she said until the nurse came to let her know it was time to go home.
It was only as they were leaving that Fix-it Felix showed up, breathless and overjoyed to see her alive and well. He went in for a hug, but Turbo shoved him in the chest, which she quietly thanked him for. Having a guard dog against unwanted physical contact was pretty nice in general, but she felt particularly weak to defend herself that night. The arm around her shoulders as they walked out may have been a possessive one, but she found that comforting in its own right.
Felix apologized right away, of course, but proceeded to follow the two of them out of the game, yakking incessantly. He went on and on about how worried they were (at which point Turbo reminded him to speak for himself), about how sorry he was that he was absent, about how important the job he took was, how he would otherwise have never left her alone -- well, not alone, he says, since Turbo was there and kept her company which he was so, so grateful for.
By the time Turbo and Mavis made it to the Turbo Time port and bid him goodnight, he had wasted all of his conversation time apologizing and thanking. Mavis could still hear him calling out insistent requests for her to come see him the next day as she rode the cord train with Turbo.
Turbo was pissed. She could tell that much. From the train to his trailer, he said nothing, only grunting now and then in response to her conversation attempts. That much was typical. But there was something a bit off about his bad mood. It was a silent treatment, but it was not quite the cold shoulder. He kept close to her, hardly letting her stray from his touch, even as he unlocked his trailer door. It led Mavis to wonder if he really was mad at her, or if it was some other uncharted territory.
She did not feel ready for it, whatever it was.
Once they were inside, and it was time to go to bed for real, she elected to sleep on the couch, to give each of them some space. She lied and told him that she was still feeling nauseous, and did not think she could handle his inevitable tossing and turning. He did not argue.
So the two of them settled into their respective nests and listened to the deafening, heavy, quivering silence.
Mavis had thrown her smock and jeans to the floor, bunching herself up in the blankets that she kept at his place. They were starting to take on the scent of his home, which pleased her. Turbo’s trailer was the site of her deepest, easiest sleeps. Even so, there was a discomfort keeping her awake that grew from annoying to unnerving. A chill still radiated from her very core, one that blankets could not remedy. Her code had not quite stabilized completely, and it felt too light, too fragile, as if it would blow away at any moment and whisk her away into nothingness.
She had heard the springs of Turbo’s mattress squeaking in protest, but no snoring. Clearly, he was not having any more luck than her. Thoughts of his warm bed filled her mind and beckoned her seductively, but she still had to wonder what she would be in for if she joined him.
It did not take very long for her to decide that she needed a remedy for her chilling state more than anything else.
She stood in the darkness, stepping over messes that she knew by heart as she crossed to his bed. There was brief hesitation as she reached its edge. Turbo was facing away from her in a tense, unhappy ball, but she could tell he would not turn her away. It did not have to be a big deal, she told herself. So she tried not to make it one.
Slowly, she sat and slipped her bare legs down into the covers. The warmth was heavenly, like settling into a hot bath. Turbo’s bed was barely big enough for two sprites of their size, so even lying on her back, her side was pressed up against him. It took everything she had to restrain herself against clinging to him. Unusually high body heat aside, the sensation of his code in contact with hers held her down like an anchor. In that side of her body, she felt more secure, more relaxed, less afraid of spontaneously disappearing.
Turbo did not react at all to her joining him. He was still giving off that weird energy. She did not like it, but… at the same time, questions were coming into her head. Just how much had he seen that night? Just how much did he help her?
What, exactly, had her careless mistake put him through?
The questions gnawed at her nearly as hard as the cold. Uncharted territory be damned, she had to know what was in his head. What she put there.
“T…” she said softly and cautiously.
He grunted tiredly.
After considering her words carefully for a moment, she asked slowly, “Were you… the one who took me to the hospital?”
At first, he was quiet, but a single, humorless chuckle escaped him eventually. “Nah,” he sighed. “Nah, Mav, I wasn’t even there.”
She frowned at the ceiling, unsure of which alternative would have been better. “‘Kay, well…” she said, “who found me?”
“Found ya?”
“Found me nearly corrupting,” she clarified.
He was quiet long enough for her to sort of dread the answer, but his reply was not an answer at all. He just asked quietly, “How much do you actually remember about tonight?”
Mavis fidgeted with the hem of her shirt under the covers. Tempting another headache, she scoured her mind. “I mean… not all that much,” she mumbled as vague images began to resurface. “I was hangin’ out in my camp, and dug up some old Spells I’d been savin’.”
“Y’took more than one, didn’t ya?” he asked bluntly.
“Uh…” she squinted, rubbing her brow. “I think… two.”
“Why?” he breathed harshly.
She pondered. “‘Cause…”
Because she wanted to feel something.
“C’mon, man, I dunno. Do I need a reason? I just wanted to,” she half-lied.
Amazingly, Turbo did not fight her on that. But she could feel some awful energy radiating off of him, more of that off-key anger. He did not prompt her to continue, but she did anyway, just to fill the silence.
“But, uh… Y’know, at first, it was the usual Spell experience, and I was havin’ a grand ol’ time. Everythin’ was goin’ fine. But… after a while, I guess I got hit with a bad trip. I like… sorta got lost n’ wandered…”
Wandered until she found herself on an endless chess board, busy with crowds of chess pieces that all moved in their proper, respective patterns. She was the only one with a real body, the only one with no set path. She could not find her brush. She could not fly. She could only try not to trip as the squares on the floor shuddered and bumped against her feet. Rage swelled in her chest, threatening to burst her ribs apart. It needed to stop. It all needed to break.
That was when a little pawn approached her…
Curling up a bit against the uncomfortable memory, she gave the truth a wide berth. “I don’t… really know where I ended up, but… I just remember bein’ pissed. Real pissed. And uh… panicking. Then… wakin’ up n’ seein’ you.”
Turbo remained silent for a little while again, every now and then drawing in a breath to speak but not following through. Eventually, he gave another long sigh. “Look, Mav… I ain’t exactly told ya the whole story. I might’ve… glossed over some things. D’you wanna know what really happened?”
Mavis’ heart stuttered. “Uh… yeah. I’d say so.”
“It ain’t pretty.”
“I figured. Tell me, anyway.”
Twisting awkwardly on the cramped mattress, he rolled onto his back. She could see one of his fingers tapping against his chest as he chose his words. “The thing is… yeah, y’did almost corrupt. But it wasn’t exactly from an overdose. It wasn’t… entirely your fault.”
There was a quiet rumbling deep in his chest, and his voice deepened with spite. “It was that freakin’ sorry excuse for a Surge Protector. Game Central’s finest. He… shocked ya.”
Mavis considered that. “...Seriously?”
“Yup. He knew y’were high, too. He was just too much a limp-dicked wuss to try anythin’ other than killin’ ya on the spot.”
Mavis knew he was exaggerating. He never liked Surge. Neither did she, but all the same, she knew how docile the man was by nature. He was no killer. But she also knew there was little point arguing with Turbo’s biased views on things. Besides, what did she care about defending Surge’s honor? He did use excessive force on her. The only question was…
“Why? What’d I do to get him so riled up?”
Turbo breathed deeply for a second, and begrudgingly answered, “Y’kinda… attacked someone.”
She looked at him. “What? Y’mean… attacked, attacked?”
“Yeah.”
“Was it…” she wondered cautiously, “...anyone I know?”
Turbo sighed. “...Yeah. It was, uh… that little…” he made vague, small gestures, “the lil’ orange potato sack with a hat.”
Mavis felt her heart yanked downwards. She halfway propped up for a second. “Maribo?”
“Yeah, her.”
“Is she okay?”
Turbo glanced at her, brow raised. “Yeah, she’s fine. Cool your jets.”
She dropped onto her back again, letting that sink in. Maribo was by no means her friend, but Mavis did thoroughly enjoy pestering and toying with her. She liked her, in her own peculiar way. The thought of Maribo actually being afraid of her was an upsetting one, but she would have every reason to be scared, after that. Thinking of how small she was, Mavis was amazed she did not have Maribo’s death on her hands. Just the thought of it was haunting.
“Huh…” Mavis breathed. “‘Kay… so… what’d I do to her?”
She felt Turbo shrug next to her. “Not much. Y’just choked her a bit.”
“Yikes,” she hissed. “I guess it could be worse, but still, yikes. I could break her neck with one hand.”
Turbo grumbled. “Uh huh. That’s pretty much what the Blue Blunder used as an excuse to zap ya.”
“He’s right, though, ain’t he?”
His stern gaze turned on her. “Y’really oughtta be more pissed about this. He nearly killed ya.”
Her hands lifted a bit. “Yeah, but he didn’t. He’s just crap at his job. Whatever.”
Turbo groaned deep in his throat. “‘Kay, fine. Leave me to be the only one pissed about a guy who’s supposed to protect us giving absolutely zero bits about your safety. Someone’s gotta see somethin’ wrong with you almost dyin’ at the hands of a cop. Guess it’s gonna be me, as usual, the only guy ever smart enough to focus on the real issues. Y’know, some days I get tired a’ bein’ the voice a’ reason for the entire freakin’ arcade.”
“I know, sugar,” she said flatly, tuning out his rant.
He went on for a little while, but Mavis’ mind was just clouded with the fact that she almost killed someone… someone she liked, on top of that. How was she even supposed to move forward after that? What would be the first step to take? How could she deal with the issue as quickly, as easily, and most effectively as possible?
Turbo speaking directly to her snapped her out of it. “Mav.”
“Huh?”
“Are ya still worryin’ about what’s-her-face?”
“I’m not worried,” she lied.
Turbo paused, and she knew he could see right through her. After deliberating for a minute, he said, “She’s fine. Believe me. I saw her.”
She looked at him. “Really?”
“Yeah,” he shrugged. “When you were unconscious, she came to have a peek at ya. Seemed perfectly alive to me. She’s just got bruises n’ she sounds like an old man.”
At that, Mavis could not help but snicker a bit. It felt good to laugh, even for a couple seconds. Settling down, she asked, “What’d she say to you?”
Turbo’s gaze wandered low as he thought. “Not much, but…” he mumbled, “if it makes ya feel any better, I let her know y’didn’t mean it. Had to explain to her what buffs were n’ everythin’.”
“Oh, great,” Mavis rubbed her forehead. “Great, thanks, T. Now she’s gonna think I’m some junkie loser.”
“Hmm. Maybe,” he said. “But are ya tellin’ me you’d rather she think of ya as a violent maniac?”
She sighed. “No. But ‘scuse me if I ain’t a fan a’ sprites thinkin’ I got a buff problem.”
There was something about his silence next to her that was concerning. He seemed to almost hold his breath, as if he was keeping words trapped in his lungs. She did not want to assume. Of all sprites, Turbo had to have been the one to know she was not an addict… right?
“Mavis,” he said lowly, and the lack of a nickname unsettled her. “You n’ me… We gotta talk.”
“...We are talkin’,” she told the ceiling.
“...About buffs.”
Her belly churned. “What’s there to talk about?” she asked, hostility creeping into her voice.
Automatically, his tone matched hers. “About how to never have a repeat incident a’ tonight.”
“Nope,” she chirped, rolling to leave the bed, but Turbo hooked an arm over her belly and pulled her back down. She began to protest, but he had rolled onto his side to face her, and his warmth radiated even deeper along that side of her body. It was just sedating enough to keep her there, but she refused to look at him. She just looked out into the darkness of his trailer, as if she would scurry off into it the moment he let her go.
“Will ya cool your jets for just a second,” he hissed, waiting a moment before loosening his grip on her and carefully stroking his thumb against her waist. She tried to focus on that sensation as he continued, his voice calmer. “Mav, I ain’t here to slap labels on ya or accuse ya of nothin’. I just got one point to make, n’ I’ll keep it short n’ sweet.”
“So do it.”
“Y’gotta quit takin’ buffs alone.”
“No.”
“Good,” he nodded, “this is good. We got that first ‘no’ outta the way.”
She merely groaned a bit.
He sighed. “Mavis, I ain’t thrilled to be talkin’ about this either. But I ain’t sayin’ you got a problem or an addiction or whatever. I ain’t even sayin’ you gotta quit takin’ buffs entirely. ‘Cause, hey, I like ‘em too, n’ it’s more fun doin’ ‘em together. But, like… y’gotta have someone to spot ya. Keep ya from overdoin’ it n’ gettin’ yourself in a freakin’ mess.”
“This was a freak incident,” she grumbled. “Up until tonight, I’ve flown solo just fine.”
“‘Kay, maybe that’s true, I dunno. But what I do know is… I mean…” his fingers squeezed into her waist a bit. “Y’slept through the worst a’ tonight. Y’don’t get how real it all was. It really, really almost happened, Mav. I... sat in that hospital waitin’ room for ages... waitin’ to hear if you’d survive the night. Even with a bunch a’ nurses helpin’ ya… everythin’ just hung on luck. You’re just… Y’know, you’re the luckiest n’ unluckiest sprite I know.”
As he spoke, Mavis’ defensiveness slowly softened, replaced by a grave, cold guilt. Imagining what it would have felt like if she had switched places with him… made her afraid of what she really had put him through. And now, he was actually opening up about it, so… it had to have been a big deal.
“So, what I’m gettin’ at is…” he shrugged. “Yeah, maybe this ain’t happened before. But it only took one time to put ya on death’s doorstep. If it ever happens a second time… who’s to say you’ll be so lucky again?”
Mavis stared into the darkness. “...I probably won’t,” she agreed softly, sadly, begrudgingly.
Turbo was quiet for a long time. She wondered if he was waiting for something, but she felt caught between her pride, her pain, and her heart.
For one thing, no one could tell her what to do, on principle. She could make her own decisions, good or bad.
For another, sometimes doing buffs alone was a more comfortable way for her to deal with some really ugly pain, the sort that no one else could ever see in her. Buffs worked faster than pleasant company. Buffs would never judge her. They would just take the pain away, and for once, she could enjoy being alone without the silence crashing down on her.
The thought of losing that option was sort of terrifying on its own.
Struggling with herself, she breathed ruefully, “Y’know I love risk-taking.”
“I know,” he whispered, more calmly than she expected.
There was a long, heavy, pregnant pause, but eventually, Turbo shifted. He scooted even closer to her, his arm bending as he squeezed her tightly against him. Behind her ear, she felt his breath for a moment before he nuzzled himself between her neck and the pillow, burying his face. He waited, his grip unrelenting.
Fumbling, Mavis prompted him softly, “...T?”
His voice low, hot, and muffled against her neck, he muttered, “Do I really gotta spell it out for ya that I don’t want ya to die?”
With that, her heart blew all other arguments out of the water.
Chest burning, she shakily took hold of his arm and squeezed. “No. No, I know…”
“So stop takin’ buffs alone,” he insisted softly. “...Please.”
Mavis turned her face to the ceiling again. She fought the uncertainty that she could actually do it. She told herself to at least try… but then decided that trying was not enough. She had to do it, and she could do anything. She was Make-it-freakin’-Mavis, and she did not have a buff problem.
“Alright,” she sighed. “I will.”
Turbo paused, but within seconds, he leaned in to find a firm grip on her and flipped her against his body as he rolled on his back, ending with her lying on top of him. Wide-eyed, a bit disoriented, Mavis said with a half-smile, “What the hell, T?”
“Ya gotta look me in the eye n’ say that,” he explained. “And a’course, y’gotta take the sacred vow.”
Between their faces, he held out his pinky finger. He watched her expectantly, not quite smiling yet.
“Is that really necessary?” she smirked, nodding at his hand.
“Oh, damn right it is, ‘cause I really wanna believe ya on this, Cherry Bomb,” he nodded briskly. “And don’t act like you didn’t start the tradition.”
A small laugh blew from her nose. Trying to ignore how daunting the promise she was about to make was, she just thought about how glad she was that his bad mood was letting up even a little bit. So, she complied. Looking right into his glowing yellow eyes, she locked her pinky over his. “No more buffs alone. Promise. Okay?”
“...Okay,” he released her hand, finally showing a bit of a satisfied smile.
Mavis made no movement to get off of him. This was the most contact she had with him all night, and it felt fantastic. She settled down, resting her chin on her crossed hands over his bare chest, and let his heat glow deep into her belly. But it was still not enough. Every inch of her left untouched still had that cold, ghostly quivering beneath her skin. It was not until she felt Turbo’s fingers in her hair that she realized she had been dissociating.
She perked up, and found him watching her contentedly, a peculiar look in his eye.
Mouth twitching into a smile, Mavis asked, “What’re you lookin’ at?”
“Hmm. I’unno,” he hummed, lightly scratching the back of her head. “Your eyes are finally dark again.”
Oh. Mavis was not sure why that in particular made her face flush with heat, but it sure did. Her gaze jumped away, and she chuckled sheepishly. “Yeah, well,” she muttered, “you’re still pretty blindin’ there, Bright Eyes.”
His chest hopped with a short laugh. “C’mon, the glow’s a courtesy. They’re free torches for when you’re lost in my--”
Almost before she realized it, Mavis had pulled herself up to kiss him. Just once at first, soft and chaste, but enough to catch him off guard. When she pulled back to check his reaction, he looked at her with raised brows and a hint of a smile. “...Hey,” he purred.
“Hey--” she cut herself off by kissing him again. She could hardly restrain herself. All she wanted was contact. All she wanted was to feel something good after the numbness and anxiety of the whole night. Propping up against the pillows, she caressed his hair while he held her waist gently. He needed to touch her more. It just was not enough.
She kept her forehead against his once the kiss broke. Her eyes were closed, but she could tell by his voice that he was smiling a bit. “Someone’s in a mood, all of a sudden.”
“Yeah,” she breathed. “I need you.”
With that, she sat up, straddling his lap. He watched her from the pillows with confused eyes, but they widened when she tossed her shirt off over her head. She was just about to dive right back in, but the concerned look on Turbo’s face stopped her.
“Uh,” he said as gently as he could, “no offense, babe, but, y’know, I ain’t exactly in the mood to fool around.”
Mavis sat there on his hips, really feeling how cold the air outside the blankets was on her bare skin. She felt her face heat up again and her gaze wandered. It was not the rejection that was embarrassing, as that was not her real desire in the first place. It was the fact that she had to take plan B to get what she needed… communicating. Always with the communicating.
“No, I know,” she said quietly, twisting her finger. “I ain’t, either.”
“...Uh huh. Then...”
“Just-- Can you just--” she stammered, carefully grabbing his hands and bringing them to her hips, “just, like… touch me. Like… plain ol’ touchin’. I, uh… still feel kinda off in my code, n’ it’s weird n’ gross n’ drivin’ me crazy, so…”
After sizing her up for a second, he sat up. “Alright, if you insist,” he said with a grin. “Where?”
She swallowed. “...Everywhere.”
“Hmm!”
So he began running his big, warm hands all over her body, pressing hard per her instructions. Resting her elbows over his shoulders, Mavis tried to let everything go. Every stress from the last twenty-four hours was not allowed to exist in that moment. The spiraling thoughts that drove her to use the Spells. The deeply upsetting hallucinations. The hospital stay. The anxieties over the promise she made. The guilt, fear, and shame over what she had done to Maribo, what she had done to Turbo… banished. All that was left was the heat of skin-on-skin contact, and the motion of his code against hers, like a massage reaching deep inside and soothing the aches in her binary.
At a certain point, Turbo’s hands snaked slowly up her back, and suddenly, she was crushed against his torso. He hugged her so tightly to his body that she could feel her bones creak. Holding onto his shoulders, she mumbled, “Uh…”
Against the curve of her neck, he simply muttered, “Don’t make it weird.”
She saw little to argue with there. Slowly, she wrapped her arms around him as well, settling into his shape, exhaling all the fear of her code blowing away into nothing. Something else swelled in her chest, and he squeezed her tight enough for it to float out.
“T…”
“Hm?”
“Uh… thanks… for bein’ there… for me. At the hospital.”
“...Yeah,” he whispered. “Don’t mention it.”
“And-- and for bein’ here,” she added. “With me. Right now.”
Turbo considered that, and responded only with a single, quick kiss on her neck.
It would still be some time before either of them fell asleep, and when they did, they would have no more than a couple of hours before having to part again. But in those hours, Mavis would sleep soundly, deeply, dreamlessly, kept warm, safe, and secure, held down by the weight of her anchor.
She would not let him down again.
Hopefully.
