Italy and HolyRome/Germany

The low key tragic love story in Hetalia is so fucking sad. 

As a child (or young country), Italy was in love with Holy Roman Empire. Holy Rome asked Italy to ally with him, but Italy declined. Even though they didn’t ally, they promised to be together when he came back from war. Only he never did. He lost the war, and as a result the Holy Roman Empire dissolved. Thus ‘Killing’ him as a country.

The area that was once the Holy Roman Empire divided into several countries, and some of the land even dissolved into Northern Italy, but the heart of it eventually formed Germany: a character who looks and acts suspiciously familiar to Holy Rome. Eventually, Germany meets Italy. When they do, Italy treats Germany as if they’ve always been friends and immediately allies with him. In context, this could be from guilt for letting Holy Rome go to war without him. They immediately become inseparable companions and fill a void in the other’s life. 

Italy still thinks of Holy Rome on occasion, and when Germany asked him if he’s ever been in love before, Italy answers honestly. Yes, and it was with a guy. Italy’s answer gets Germany thinking about their own relationship, and what it would be like if they were a couple. Interestingly, he seems to really enjoy the idea.

Although nothing happens (due to Italy's naivety and Germany’s lack of communication), it’s clear that they both care deeply for each other and are open to a relationship. 

The exact connection Germany and Holy Rome have is uncertain. Personally, I wouldn’t say Germany is a reincarnation of Holy Rome, but rather an aspect of him. Holy Rome died, but Germany was born from his ashes. And, even though he doesn’t understand it, he has a strong bond towards Italy, and a desire to be with him. Germany was born from the heart of Holy Rome, and Holy Rome’s heart belonged to Italy.
