Masks character: The Vanguards

So, my character(s) for the superhero RPG Masks is a legacy hero, and her mentor who passed the hero name to her! Backstory under the cut, (TL;DR: Vanguard 1 was a mob enforcer turned vigilante against the mob and the cops in the 70s, Vanguard 2 is the granddaughter of her late mechanic)

Téa Valdez was a particularly gifted student at Halcyon academy, with a special project she'd been working on to maybe take her to the ivy league of her choice down the road: A device that used sonic pulses to scan things. When she tested it in her family's garage, she discovered fragments from an explosive device remained inside the garage, dating back to when her grandfather supposedly died in an accident. She dug around and discovered that her grandfather had ties to the Diamatti crime family in the 70s, working as a chop shop mechanic for him until he left. Just after he died, a woman named Natalia Ortez, former mob enforcer, emerged as the holder of a number of patents she seemingly just had. Her company, Valor Security and Engineering, made her a millionaire over the years. Téa tried to get more out of her family, but they told her to stay away from Natalia.

She didn't listen. She broke into Valor's offices. There, she discovered that Natalia had a secret facility on the outskirts of town - an abandoned missile silo. Téa found her way there and broke in. Her sonic scanner set to fire dangerous blasts that could have been lethal. She found Natalia there, alone, and demanded she answer for what she did. Natalia told Téa that she was exactly like her grandfather.

Natalia Ortez might have been a mob enforcer but she realized they were kicking it up a notch in a way she didn't like. She realized she was in the wrong line of business and needed to help take them down. Sandro Valdez wasn't her victim - he was her partner. They worked together to tear down the Diamatti's operation, turning their money, weapons, stolen tech against them, turning Natalia into the Vanguard, scourge of the underworld. This included an experimental chip, meant to boost the user's reflexes.

But Sandro was discovered one day, and killed. She retaliated and put the rest of the crime family away. She started the business she and Sandro always meant to start together. But his wife wouldn't accept her money. She had no answer to give to his infant son. She decided it was easier to let them think she was the villain of the story.

Now that Téa knows the truth, she's been training to be the next Vanguard, and when a rash of crimes broke out, she decided it was her time. Natalia just hopes she can keep Téa safe through it all.

Dwight Muhammad Qawi vs Evander Holyfield I - July 12, 1986

First day of the new year so it is time to look back!

Most people know these days know Evander Holyfield from his legendary run as a heavyweight. His fights with Tyson, George Foreman, Larry Holmes, John Ruiz, Lennox Lewis, Michael Moorer, Riddick Bowe, Buster Douglas, etc. But it is at cruiserweight where Holyfield established himself as one of the best in the world. The 1984 Olympic bronze medalist stormed onto the cruiserweight scene in shortly after his debut in '84. The division had only been around a few years at the point and while there were a number of champions, it did not have the luster of a lot of the other divisions at the time. 11 fights into his pro career, he went face to face with Dwight Muhammad Qawi.

Dwight Muhammad Qawi was one of the best fights in the world in 1986. He was a former WBC and Ring Magazine light heavyweight champion before moving up to the newly formed cruiserweight division. At 5'7, he was never the bigger fighter but was so extremely skilled that he still found ways to dominate opposition.

Pest Control Officer Maximum Sunshine is ~14 and has the longest backstory. Landlord neighbor’s former “feral” working cat. She fed but otherwise completely neglected him for 5 years. I sweet-talked her into letting me take him in. He absorbed many names due to his strange journey to get to us but I’m trying to stick to Max so he can actually learn his name—spoiler, he is not truly feral:

Last but not least is Ms. Evander Holyfield AKA Van. She is the sweetest, loudest girl in the world. Also ~14. Five years ago my gf went for a walk and came home with a 4.5lb. Van. No microchip, medical issues, I loved her immediately. We nursed her back to health and she’s up to a healthy 8lbs. now!
