New Video: Mervyn Shares Brooding and Intense "The Bomb"
New Video: Mervyn Shares Brooding and Intense "The Bomb" @heygroover @romainpalmieri @DorianPerron
After spending years writing and recording pop and rock music, French artist and producer Mervyn made a radical departure in his creative approach with the release of his debut EP Holod, a defiant cry of revolt against war and the unbearable violence of our world. While meshing several different genres and styles, the French producer created an uncompromising sound with a punk rock urgency and…

Nocnitsa, the night hag [Slavic mythology]:
Tumblr media
Nocnitsa is a hag or witch from Slavic folklore who inhabits woods and forests. She is heavily associated with night and darkness, and as such, she mainly targets sleeping children at night. A deeply evil creature, Nocnitsa usually bestows nightmares onto her victims, but she other ways of inflicting suffering: sometimes she shows up at night to breastfeed infants, but her milk is highly poisonous and will cause the child to fall ill.
In this aspect, she is associated with the Rusalka, another supernatural female monster that kills with her breasts. Sometimes, the breasts of a Rusalka were said to be made of iron or stone, and she would crush her victims to death with them.
To appease Nocnitsa, people would make offerings of bread (sometimes also salt), which would then be rubbed on the child. There are also certain charms or rituals to ward off the witch and cure a child’s insomnia. Alternatively, young children could be protected against Nocnitsa with a protective circle or by simply placing a knife under the cradle.
She is also called Nochnitsy (or a variation), Kriksy (meaning “scream”) and Plaksy (“the sniveler”, “one who snivels”), sometimes combined into the name ‘Kriksa-Plaksa’. In Belarus, Nochnitsy were a group of tiny spirits instead of a witch, but the principle remained the same. The Nochnitsy caused children to sleep badly, but they were deeply afraid of fire. To cure an infant cursed by the Nochnitsy, parents would make them sleep in front of the fireplace, or sometimes put onto a large tray or shovel and put in an oven for a short while (note: a smoldering warm oven, not a burning one. Please do not put babies in burning ovens).
Tumblr media
Interestingly, Nochnitsa (if it is indeed the same character) plays a minor role in the Slavic story of Pizamar, a mortal woman who fell in love with the god Svarozhich. Unfortunately, the gods forbade love between mortals and deities, so Pizamar tried to take her own life. She walked towards a cliff at night, but right before she could jump off, Nochnitsa cast a sleep spell on her.
Every time she tried to commit suicide, Nochnitsa put her to sleep. Lada and Chors, two goddesses, watched this scenario unfold several times before taking pity on Pizamar. They stole divine mead of immortality from the other gods and gave it to her, turning her immortal. Pizamar then became the entertainer of the gods, dancing and singing for them, which she did with such passion and talent that she eventually became the goddess of the arts.

In an apparent attempt to boost birth rates, Russian lawmakers are considering a bill to ban “childfree propaganda,” and many private clinics across the country have “voluntarily” stopped performing abortions. However, experts interviewed by Holod agree that these measures are more symbolic and politically motivated than effective in raising birth rates.
Banning “childfree propaganda” won’t make a difference, says Aby Shukyurov, explaining that research shows childlessness in Russia is often due to personal circumstances, not ideology. Alexey Raksha echoed this, calling the ban purely ideological, with no real demographic impact.
Shukyurov also pointed to other measures, like reviving the Soviet-era “Mother Heroine” award for women with 10 or more children, “Conception Day" in the Ulyanovsk region, and requiring both a doctor’s and priest’s approval for an abortion in the Belgorod region, as equally ineffective. “On one hand, these measures seem almost laughable, but on the other, they’re clearly damaging because they make women’s lives harder,” he said.
There’s also talk of reintroducing a “childlessness tax,” similar to the one from Soviet times. “It’s just another way for the government to collect more money,” Shukyurov commented. “People who don’t plan to have children aren’t going to change their minds because the government charges them 2,000 rubles [$21].”
Abortion bans and restrictions are another common talking point for Russian officials. However, with the spread of contraception, abortions are already less common in Russia, says Dmitry Zakotyansky. And history, he adds, clearly shows that these measures won’t stop people from ending unwanted pregnancies. When abortions were banned during Stalin’s era, maternal mortality skyrocketed — pregnancy-related deaths rose by 76 percent in the first year, and maternal mortality doubled within five years. After abortion was legalized in 1955, those numbers returned to previous levels.
Now, Zakotyansky notes, generations of Russian women have grown up with the right to abortion, and taking that away won’t be easy. And even though these rights are slowly being chipped away, “it’s clear this won’t improve the birth rate,” he argued.
Since the start of the full-scale war against Ukraine, anti-feminist rhetoric has become increasingly common in Russia. Lawmakers have called for a “legal ban” on feminism, claimed the “fight for equality is relegated to the archives” and said young women should “give birth, give birth, and then give birth again.” The Russian Orthodox Church has also weighed in, with programs on the religious Spas TV channel arguing that women who become pregnant from rape should give birth, while priests lament that the world is in a “difficult period in history” where women are “demanding equal rights with men.”
The Russian government has now officially incorporated patriarchal “family values” into its strategy to boost birth rates. However, Zakotyansky warns that this approach could backfire. He argues that modern women are more likely to forgo having children if they can’t balance family life with their careers, fearing it will hold them back professionally.
Russia is putting pressure on women to boost the birth rate — but demographers say the main problem is too many people dying

The Delta Flyers episode on Human Error is incredible.. I thought nothing would top the Threshold episode but this one’s so good. They eviscerated that episode; it’s literally that “stop it he’s already dead!” meme. I’ve not seen this amount of passion from RDM and Garrett Wang in any episode and all of the passion is directed into conveying how awful Human Error is as an episode of Voyager. I’m wheezing with laughter. (But also I’m so glad that it was addressed how Fucked Up this whole episode is. I don’t think I’ve ever met a Star Trek fan IRL that agreed with me that this whole situation is so creepy. What a relief to hear that..)
Also I really liked Garrett Wang’s suggestion (paraphrased) “if going down the route of extremely unethical Holo-programme of Chakotay, just go the whole hog and also have her go on holodates with holo versions of the rest of the main cast, regardless of gender.” + even bringing up the possibility of an ace or aro Seven as an alternative conclusion to the episode was so nice to hear
Though hearing him really earnestly exclaiming “Have her taste soup off Janeway’s fingers!!” really was not a sentence I was ever prepared to hear

S = k. log W is a new compilation of experimental music from French label Camembert Électrique.
For this project, we chose an inspiring idea: Ludwig Boltzmann's formula, which links entropy to the statistical probability of a system's microstates. Essentially, it speaks about the disorder and order within a system, and how they can mix. Ludwig Boltzmann was a scientist who worked on statistics in physics. He created this famous formula: S = k. log W. It shows how entropy, which measures disorder in a system, is related to the probability of its different states. The idea was to invite artists to create music that reflects this concept. We wanted to show how disorder and order can coexist together. It was a musical exploration to express this complex idea in a creative way.
It features my track Holode. A holode is what Boltzmann calls a system’s complete ensemble of states, the bigger picture that one must consider, rather than single particle states. I can relate to that. I recorded it mostly live, with my penny whistle through my favourite effects pedal, then added the bass to it.

You can tell how insecure Putin is. He apparently told his stooges on Kremlin-run media to stop calling Volodymyr Zelenskyy "president".
Of course you can still get into big trouble in Russia for calling Putin's illegal invasion a "war". Putin's 3-day special military operation is now into Day 574.
The Kremlin has instructed Russian state-run media outlets to stop referring to Volodymyr Zelensky as “president” of Ukraine, the independent news website Holod reported Monday, citing the recipients of the presidential administration’s directive.  Television broadcasters and online publications are instead advised to use the phrase “the Zelensky regime” or call the Ukrainian president by name only, according to the instructions circulated last Friday. The instructions are currently limited to news headlines in order for Zelensky’s name to appear without his official status on Russian online news aggregators. Holod analyzed Russian news stories published since Friday and found partial compliance with the Kremlin’s directive.
FYI: The Moscow Times moved to Amsterdam in 2022. That's why they're still able to publish items like this.
Meanwhile, PRESIDENT Zelenskyy was at the United Nations in New York asking why Russia, a country which has violated the UN Charter, is still a UN member.
Zelensky urges unity in dramatic UN address
Hailed with vigorous applause when he took the stage, Zelensky used his 15 minutes to accuse Russian leaders of terrorism and genocide, citing in particular the removal of Ukrainian children from the country. Ukraine has long accused Russia of forcibly deporting Ukrainian children from occupied areas – allegations which form the basis of an international war crimes arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin. Some Russian officials have admitted the practice, publicly boasting about their efforts to bring children to Russia, place them in Russian families and, in some cases, give them Russian passports.
PRESIDENT Zelenskyy seemed to refer to the folks ignorant about Eastern Europe who preach "compromise" with Russia.
In a warning to other nations over “shady” cooperation with Russia, the Ukrainian president also invoked the death of Russian Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin last month. “I am aware of their attempts to make some shady dealings behind the scenes. Evil cannot be trusted. Ask Prigozhin if one bets on Putin’s promises,” he said.
Occasionally German Chancellor Olaf Scholz nas not always been enthusiastic about the conflict. But in his speech at the UN he seemed fully on board with the PRESIDENT of Ukraine.
Peace without justice is dictatorship, says Germany's Scholz
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz warned of "phony solutions" in the search for peace in Ukraine during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly. "For peace without freedom is called oppression. Peace without justice is called dictatorship. Moscow must finally understand that," Scholz said, calling on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war. Ukrainians were "fighting for their lives and their freedom for the independence and territorial integrity of their country, for the preservation of the very principles to which we all committed ourselves in the UN Charter," Scholz said. "And it is Russia's president who can end it (the war) at any time with a single order," he added.
Absolutely, Herr Bundeskanzler. Putin's Russia started this illegal genocidal war on its own and the only negotiations needed to end it is to arrange a ceasefire to allow Russia to withdraw promptly.
Of course Putin was not at the UN. He seldom ventures outside of Russia, except to his satellite Belarus, for fear of being arrested as a war criminal.
