Mark (Christopher Augustine) is a disturbed loner who toils in the sub-basement of the movie business as a cameraman shooting porno films for swinish boss Jobal (Dick Glass). In his off hours, Mark prowls the peep shows and strip clubs of Los Angeles to prey on random young women who he picks up and strangles to death. When Mark pursues a romantic interest in Michelle (Jeannette Dilger), a model who he films in one of Jobal's sleazy movies, the grim reality behind the fantasy leads the frustrated cinematographer to shoot a different kind of Hollywood ending.
Pre-order Hollywood 90028.

Pitchfork Day 1
ERIC EGGLESON
It's been a while since Dagger covered this Chicago festival. 12 years ago, Tim joined me and wrote about his highlights of the fest. Now it's my turn. Driving in on 290, it's always a "pleasure" when I hit the Hillside Strangler. Unfortunately, that made me miss Chicago's supergroup Black Duck. Maybe next time.
Chicago's Angry Blackmen did their best to insight the crowd, as small as it was, on the Red Stage(RS) by getting them to chant "Black," while they yelled "Angry." They even started a little earlier than their 2pm time slot. The sound was filled with their DJ's mixing.
Next up, ML Buch calmed things down resulting in quite the contrast on the Green Stage(GS). A softer, but beautiful-sounding female duo with some recorded tracks, but I loved the live, gorgeous harmonies. It was a set filled with the rise and fall of many moods, but delivered very well with electronic drums/beats, two keyboards, and a guitar.
Over at the Blue Stage(BS), (also the stage with the most shade)Rosali took another route. Twangy Americana/Alt-Country filled their sound. The four-piece played new songs to be released in March, along with some older stuff. A tight full band with killer guitar solos and excellent vocals to highlight their songwriting skills.
TKay Maidza's entrance to Pitchfork misfired due to technical difficulties, but that didn't stop her mix of Hip Hop, like "Grasshopper," and smooth R&B, like "Cashmere," from reaching the crowd. TKay and her DJ continued to please the crowd with "24k" and "What Ya Know." And then a cover of the Pixies' "Where is My Mind?" really threw me off. TKay and her DJ continued to rev up the crowd with "Ghost!" and "Ring-A-Ling." A great set in the rising heat; unfortunately, the crowd wasn't as big as it should have been.
Over to the BS, Doss was DJing up a storm, uh, well maybe a heat storm. It was an amazing mix of sounds that pleased the crowd, even if it was a small one. Doss definitely showed some skills I haven't seen since my college days.
I took a dinner break, so I only caught snippets of billy woods and Kenny Segal on the RS. Lots of echoed screaming over tribal beats.
I chose Amen Dunes on the BS over Yaeji. Decided it was time to see a live band rather than another DJ. Amen Dunes delivered. Very tight band, thanks to the sound crew. (That's one thing to point out, the sound was great all day!) The band's set delivered many songs off of their new album Death Jokes, with some older ones thrown in. I kept getting a Simple Minds vibe, which isn't a bad thing.
Back to the GS, 100 gecs came out with a bang. It's now 6:15, and the crowd is starting to fill up. Starting with "Dumbest Girl Alive" was just what the crowd needed. (I was reminded of another Pitchfork favorite from years ago, Sleigh Bells.) The duo, singing with tracks, did a great job of getting the crowd fired up. I lost interest with "Frog on the Floor" with its Specials-sounding keyboards, but was pulled back in with "Hollywood Baby" (another Sleigh Bells-sounding song).
Back to the BS for Sudan Archives. Yes, it was another artist singing to tracks. To give her credit, she did bust out her violin to show her skills. Again the crowd loved her and proof that Pitchfork has, once again, delivered rising artists that need to be heard. I headed out after this to get ready for...
DAY 2 tomorrow.

3 Books To Get You Out of Your Reading SLUMP
As a full-time college student that is required to read multiple long, informative, educational, monotonous, tedious, books at a time, I can completely understand how somebody who used to be a "leisure reader" would not necessarily be reaching for a book on their spare time.
With that being said.....
Here is a list of three books that are GUARANTEED (disclosure: In my opinion these books are PRETTY GOOD, at the very least they are interesting & I would love to discuss these with anybody who has read them before) to get you out of your reading slump.
1. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
You wanna cry? No? Me neither, but this story does not give you another option.
Amazon describes it as: "Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?"
Deb's description: A woman with a past similar to that of Elizabeth Taylor, describes the trials and tribulations of making it in Hollywood back in the day. She talks about her greatest loves, biggest regrets, and life lessons. Monique Grant, an unknown writer, is hired to help Evelyn write her autobiography (this would be like Beyonce hiring ME to write her autobiography, IM A GREAT WRITER, but you get it). Why the heck would a woman of so much influence, wealth, and status divulge her entire life story to seemingly a nobody? Boom, you're hooked.
2. Alone With the Devil: Famous Cases of a Courtroom Psychiatrist by M.D. Ronald Markman and Dominick Bosco
This book prompted me to buy a portable door lock for added security.
Amazon describes it as: "Profiles the author's career as a forensic psychiatrist, recounting the many frightening criminals he has faced, including the Hillside Strangler, Juan Corona, and members of the Manson family"
Deb's description: Terrifying book from the perspective of a courtroom psychiatrist. Markman and Bosco go through cases in excruciating detail, they also provide insight as to how the court system works regarding criminals trying to please guilty by reason of insanity. The cool part about this book is that the chapters are different cases, therefore you can jump around and read whatever spikes your interest.
3. So You've Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson
IIf you are interested in the phenomena that is cancel culture, and believe that we should resort back to public stoning then this book is for you!
Amazon describes it as: "Jon Ronson has travelled the world meeting recipients of high-profile public shaming. People who, say, made a joke on social media that came out badly, or made a mistake at work. Once their transgression is revealed, collective outrage circles with the force of a hurricane and the next thing they know they're being torn apart by an angry mob, jeered at, demonized, sometimes even fired from their job.
A great renaissance of public shaming is sweeping our land. Justice has been democratized. The silent majority are getting a voice. But what are we doing with our voice?"
Deb's Description: This book dives into the lives of people who have done something offensive or worthy of being "canceled", and how they have dealt (or not dealt) with the consequences of their actions. One of the cases spoken about in this book is regarding the incident where a white woman tweeted a racially insensitive comment while boarding a flight, she put her phone on do not disturb and enjoyed her flight. Once she landed she was met with a hailstorm of repercussions including death threats, hate comments, and losing her job. This book makes you ask the question "What punishment is suitable for someone who does or says something heinous on the internet?"
If you cant get around to purchasing/renting/stealing (Hey, I don't know your life.) any of these books then i recommend:
Audible has helped me still keep up with "leisure reading" even with a full course load. Since they provide audiobooks, you can listen to a book essentially anywhere. Audible makes the drive to work pleasant, and it's like "cheating reading", which still counts.
If these books did not s p a r k, your interest then I will leave you with my secret weapon: THE BOOK WHISPERER TIK TOK
This page has great recommendations and she offers a wide variety of different genres so something is BOUND (book joke) to peak your curiosity.
Never forget that reading can be fun...

On this day in 1904, the great actor Peter Lorre was born as László Löwenstein in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (in a city now located in modern-day Slovakia). He starred in the amazing Fritz Lang-directed film M in 1931, but was forced to flee Germany once Hitler came to power. He landed in Hollywood, where he was placed under contract by Warner Brothers. His first film for Warner Bros. was The Maltese Falcon. Peter Lorre and Humphrey Bogart would end up co-starring in five films. They were not only frequent co-stars, but also very close personal friends. When Bogie fell in love with Bacall, he worried a lot about their age difference. Lorre put Bogie at ease by telling him: "Five good years are better than none." Peter Lorre had one child, a daughter named Catharine. The Hillside Stranglers Kenneth Bianchi and Angelo Buono, pretending to be police officers, stopped her with the intent of killing her. However, they let her go when they learned she was Peter Lorre's daughter. #peterlorre #humphreybogart #laurenbacall #warnerbros #onthisday #classicfilm #oldhollywood #casablanca #themaltesefalcon #m #goldenageofhollywood #filmnoir https://www.instagram.com/p/BzL3IlvHBLg/?igshid=180unalr5ylbr

Bianchi, Kenneth Alessio, and Buono, Angelo, Jr.
Born in May 1951 to a prostitute mother in Rochester, New York, Ken Bianchi was given up for adoption as an infant. By age 11, he was falling behind in his schoolwork and was given to furious tantrums in class and at home. He married briefly at 18. Two years later he wrote to a girlfriend, claiming he had killed a local man. She laughed it off, dismissing the claim as part of Ken’s incessant macho posturing, but homicide was clearly preying on Bianchi’s mind. By 1973, he was certain that police suspected him of involvement in Rochester’s brutal “alphabet murders,” through in truth it took six more years before detective realized his car resembled one reported near the scene of one “alphabet” slaying.
Meanwhile in January 1976, Bianchi pulled up the stakes and moved to Los Angeles, there teaming up with his adoptive cousin,Angelo Buono, in an amateur white-slave racket. Born at Rochester in October 1934, Buono was a child of divorce, transported across country by his mother at age five. By 14, he was stealing cars and displaying a precocious obsession with sodomy. Sentenced for auto theft in 1950, he escaped from the California Youth Authority and was recaptured in December 1951. As a young man, Buono idolized condemned sex offender Caryl Chessman, and in later years he would emulate the so-called red-light rapist’s method of procuring victims. In the meantime, though, he fathered several children, viciously abusing various wifes and girlfriends in the process. Somehow, in defiance of his violent temperament and almost simian appearance, he attracted scores of women, dazzling cousin Kenneth with his “harem” and his method of recruiting prostitutes through rape and torture.
Two of Buono’s favourite hookers managed to escape his clutches during 1977, and Bianchi later marked their departure as starting point for LA.’s reign of terror at the hands of Bianchi and Buono. In precisely two month’s time, the so-called Hillside Stranglers would abduct and slay 10 women, frequently abandoning their victims’ naked bodies in a grim display, as if to taunt authorities. Rejected for employment by Glendale and Los Angeles police department, longing for a chance to throw his weight around and show some “real authority,” Bianchi fell in line with Buono’s suggestion that they should impersonate policemen, stopping female motorists or nabbing prostitutes according to their whim. Along the way, they would subject their captives to an ordeal of torture, sexual assault, and brutality, inevitably ending with a twist of the garrote.
Yolanda Washington, a 19 year old hooker, was the first to die, murdered October 17th, her nude body discovered the next day, near Universal City. Two weeks later, on Halloween, police retrieved the corpse of 15 year old Judith Miller from a flower bed in La Crescenta. Elissa Kastin, a 21 year old Hollywood waitress, was abducted and slain November 5th, her body discovered the next morning on a highway embankment in Glendale. On November 8th, Jane King, aspiring actress and model, was kidnapped, raped and suffocated, her body dumped on an off-ramp of the Golden State Freeway, undiscovered until November 22nd.
By that time, female residents of Los Angeles were living a nightmare. No less than three victims had been discovered on November 20th including 20 year old honor student Kristina Wechler, dumped in Highland Park, and two classmates from junior high school, Sonja Johnson and Dolores Cepeda, discovered in Elysian Park a week after their disappearance from a local bus stop. Retrieval of Jane King’s body increased the anxiety, and Thanksgiving week climaxed with the death of Lauren Wagner, an 18 year old student, found in the Glendale hills on November 29th. By that time police knew they were looking for dual suspects, based on the testimony of eyewitness including one prospective victim, the daughter of screen star Peter Lorre who had managed to avoid the stranglers’ clutches. On December 9th, prostitute Kimberly Martin answered her last out-call in Glendale, turning up nude and dead on an Echo Park hillside next morning. The last to die. at least in California, was Cindy Hudspeth, found in the trunk of her car after it was pushed over a cliff in the Angeles National Forest.
Bianchi sensed that it was time for a change of scene. Moving to Bellingham, Washington, he found work as a security guard, flirting once more with the police work he craved. On January 11, 1979, Diane Wilder and Karen Mandic were raped and murdered in Bellingham, last seen alive when they went to check out a potential house-sitting job. Bianchi had been their contact, and inconsistent statements led police to hold him for further investigation. A search of his home turned up items stolen from sites he was paid to guard, and further evidence finally linked him to the Bellingham murders. Collaboration with L.A authorities ;ed to Bianchi’s indictment in five of the Hillside murders in June 1979. In custody, Bianchi first denied everything, then feigned submission to hypnosis, manufacturing multiple personalities in his bid to support an insanity defence. Psychiatrists saw through the ruse, and after his indictment in Los Angeles, Ken agreed to testify against his cousin. His guilty plea to give five new counts of homicide was followed by Buono’s arrest in October 1979, and Angelo was charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder. A 10 month preliminary hearing climaxed in March 1981, with Angelo ordered to stand trial on all counts.
Bianchi, meanwhile, was desperately seeking some way to save himself. In june 1980, he received a letter from Veronica Lynn Compton, a 23 year old poet, playwright, and aspiring actress, who sought Ken’s opinion of her new play (dealing with a female serial killer). Correspondence and conversations revealed her obsession with murder, mutilation, and necrophilia, encouraging Bianchi to suggest a bizarre defence strategy. Without a second thought, Veronica agreed to visit Bellingham, strangle a woman there, and deposit specimens of Bianchi’s sperm at the scene, thus leading police to believe the “real killer” as still at large. On September 16th, 1980, Compton visited Bianchi in prison, receiving a book with part of a rubber glove inside, containing his semen. Flying north to Bellingham, she picked out a female victim at random but bungled the murder attempt. Arrested in California on October 3, Compton was convicted in Washington during 1981 and received a life sentence. She published a memoir (Eating the Ashes) from prison in 2002.
As Buono’s trial date approached, Bianchi issued a series of contradictory statements, leading prosecutors to seek dismissal of all chargers in July 1981. A courageous judge, Ronald George, refused to postpone the trial, which ultimately ran from November 1981 to November 1983. Convicted on nine counts of murder oddly excluding Yolanda Washington’s Buono was sentenced to nine terms of life imprisonment without parole. His cousin was returned to Washington state for completion of two corresponding life terms in the Bellingham case. Buono died at Calipatria State Prison, in California’s Imperial County, on September 21, 2002.

FROM PRODUCERS OF ABC NEWS’ ‘20/20,’ A NEW HULU ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS THE CHILLING 1970s-‘80s ERA OF RAMPANT SERIAL KILLERS IN LOS ANGELES
‘City of Angels | City of Death’ Features First-Hand Accounts From the Detectives Who Tracked Down the Freeway Killer, Hillside Strangler and Sunset Strip Killer Bringing Justice for the Victims and Survivors
All Six Episodes Drop Wednesday, Nov. 24, Only on Hulu
Throughout the 1970s and ‘80s, more than 20 serial killers stalked the streets of Los Angeles simultaneously and within miles of each other, murdering and terrorizing citizens — until the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division banded together and tracked down the killers. From producers of ABC News’ “20/20,” the new Hulu Original “City of Angels | City of Death” chronicles the group of LAPD detectives and their investigations, from launching stakeouts to tracking and catching some of that era’s most notorious murderers, including the Freeway Killer, the Hillside Strangler, the Sunset Strip Killer and more. All six, hour-long episodes of “City of Angels | City of Death” drop on Wednesday, Nov. 24, only on Hulu.
“City of Angels | City of Death” depicts the chilling details of the gruesome crimes through dramatic recreations and the first-hand accounts of law enforcement as they masterfully juggled multiple serial killer investigations before the introduction of DNA technology and under the pressure of unprecedented media attention. The detectives’ discoveries changed the way authorities catch killers, revolutionizing modern methods. “City of Angels | City of Death” includes interviews with retired LAPD detectives Tom Lange, Robert Souza, Bob Grogan, Frank Garcia and Jerry LeFrois; survivors; forensic experts; eyewitnesses and more.
“City of Angels | City of Death” is produced for Hulu by ABC News Studios and Highway 41 Productions. For ABC News Studios, David Sloan is senior executive producer, and Colleen Halpin is executive producer. For Highway 41 Productions, Star Price is executive producer and director.
EPISODE SYNOPSIS
“Heart of Darkness”
LAPD detectives must juggle multiple investigations at once as a rash of serial killings terrorized the people of Los Angeles starting in the mid-1970s. Detectives Bob Grogan and Tom Lange hunt for these notorious killers throughout the city, from the Hillside Strangler in the Hollywood Hills to the Skid Row Stabber in the dangerous streets of downtown L.A. At the same time, another mysterious serial killer begins his reign of terror.
“News at Eleven”
The Hillside Strangler Task Force’s investigation becomes the focus of a media frenzy as they expand their search for the killer, but detective Bob Grogan has a creeping suspicion that the Hillside Strangler may in fact be two men working together. Meanwhile, detective Tom Lange gets a break in his pursuit of the Skid Row Stabber, who targeted the less fortunate — the homeless, drug addicts and alcoholics — leading to a confrontation in a darkened movie theater. Elsewhere, authorities found an aspiring model slain near a beach, and the LAPD believes it could be the work of another serial killer, adding a new case to the detectives’ docket.
“The Mind of a Killer”
A young girl disappears in Huntington Beach, and detectives identify her kidnapper and murderer after his appearance on a popular TV series, which prompts a nationwide search. Meanwhile, detectives arrest a suspect in the Hillside Strangler case in Bellingham, Washington, but they believe the suspect’s cousin may have been an accomplice in the murders.
“The Gathering Storm”
The Hillside Strangler case gets even more bizarre. One of the suspects claims he has multiple personalities and that one of them, Steve, is responsible for killing with another suspect. Detectives take the Dating Game Killer into custody, but they face an uphill battle proving his guilt. As some investigations come closer to wrapping up, detective Robert Souza’s pursuit of a new terrifying murderer is just beginning — the Freeway Killer, who captured and killed mostly male teens.
“A New Nightmare”
The Freeway Killer eludes detective Robert Souza, leading him all over Southern California. To focus his search, Souza seeks the help of imprisoned murderer Roy Norris, one of the infamous Tool Box Killers. Meanwhile, one of the Hillside Strangler suspects agrees to turn on his murderous partner to avoid the death penalty, but the district attorney’s office believes the judge should throw out the case. A new serial killer strikes, abducting women off the Sunset Strip.
“Judgment Day”
The Sunset Strip Killer is at large, and detective Frank Garcia must decipher newly found clues. The serial killers of this chilling era go to trial and receive their sentences, giving their victims justice.

Fun (or not so fun) fact of the day
The Hillside Stranglers picked up a young woman to murder. Then they discovered that her father was Peter Lorre, a legendary Hollywood character actor. They let her go because they feared that killing a celebrity’s daughter would bring too much attention down.

Live Ledge #327: More Songs From 1978
Last month I put together a show that featured nothing but music from my favorite year of rock and roll. 1978 was such an easy theme, and it just couldn't be contained in one episode. In fact, thanks to some further research over the last few weeks there are plans to have up to five shows of tracks celebrating their 40th anniversaries.
The most important record of this show is undoubtedly the second Clash album. "Give 'Em Enough Rope" came out in November 1978, and was the first "punk" record I bought when the week it was released. I've loved it ever since, and it was hard to pick three songs to represent it on tonight's show. As a bonus, I threw in "Clash City Rockers", one of their single releases from that year.
You can find this show at almost any podcast site, including iTunes and Stitcher. Or...
