Bought myself a couple pretty color picture gardening books because I bloody felt like it. Looking forward to spending time with these, which I can because I'm just killing time three hours a day this week as well as last.
I did go to a different and much more interesting park on Friday. This one was a golf course for years until it foreclosed and was bought by the county. The county is planning on rewilding it, and has put in some stick farms, but really it's what I would call a feral landscape, beautifully wild in a uniquely post-tame way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The pond is choked with cattails and algae but to my eye that's still preferable to the sterile, bare pond at the "duck pond" park in town. This pond cluttered with non -natives is not supporting anywhere near the life it could be, but at least there's shelter and material for the generalist species.
Tumblr media
And pioneers like mullein, growing abundantly here in an abandoned patch of sand.
Tumblr media
A stick farm in the bottom land is a promise of forest to come. And the highest hill affords a lovely view of the edge of town.
Tumblr media
At the top of the hill, this stark and yet moving sculpture by a local artist really stands out:
Tumblr media
Raventree, by Thomas Sterner.
And more humble but beloved by me, in my front plantings, all the bare dirt marks where new bulbs have been planted.
Tumblr media
Eventually, the inkberry and bayberry and holly and winterberry I've planted (and will plant; shrubs are bloody expensive) will fill in and make an evergreen hedge to mitigate the winter winds a bit. But till then, the bulbs will hold the soil and be beautiful every spring.

Birds of Doriath (non Songbirds)
I have songbirds of Doriath here and my masterlist of environmental world building here!
Doriath is a region made up of a variety of forests. There is Region, a forest of holly and other mostly deciduous trees, Neldoreth, an ancient beechwood, Nivrim, a forest of primarily oak north of the twilit meres and finally Arthórien, a forest we have almost no information on, divided from the rest of the kingdom by the river Aros which runs along the Eastern border of greater Doriath.
Greater Doriath (Region and Neldoreth): black billed cuckoo, tawny owl, barn owl and subspecies, goshawk, sparrow hawk, wood grouse, common quail, common swift, moorhen (also found in Nivrim), little curlew, red kites, black woodpecker, green woodpecker, hoopoe (in clearings, glades and outskirts),
Nivrim and the twilit Meres: Barrow’s golden eye, ural owl and ural owl subspecies, northern hawk owl, wood duck, water rail, spotted crake, black stork, common golden eye, horned grebe, marsh harrier, tree kingfishers, merlin
Arthórien (markedly different climate): hill partridge, emerald dove, great eared nightjar, kiwi species, black wood pigeon, rain quail, grey headed woodpecker, Japanese scops owl, grass owl, white backed woodpecker, green pigeon, greater painted snipe (I’ll probably make a more thorough post for this entirely)
World building notes:
I’ve talked about this before but common and rain quails are domesticated for their eggs and meat, primarily by the marchwardens! There are little enclosures built in strategic locations between the temporary huts the marchwardens use between scouting and other missions. There are elves, usually younger ones who might be training as a scout or warden, who care full time for the birds. The quails live good long lives and are often named by their keepers. While in Doriath, Túrin saved four quails from being eaten out of spite
Nightjars and owls are considered sacred to the Silvan of Doriath who reside in Arthórien and appear frequently in song and folklore.
Water birds are most commonly found in Nivrim where ponds and marshlands make up part of the ecosystem. Their images appear upon the walls of Menengroth in the passages beneath the river.
Though birds of prey are not reviled by any means, depictions of the deaths of elves in battle or through other violent means are commonly represented as birds of prey killing songbirds

The Murder of Molly Bish & the Connection to Holly Piirainen
Tumblr media
August 20, 2024
Molly Bish was born on August 2, 1983 in Warren, Massachusetts. At the time of her death, she was 16 years old and was working as a lifeguard at Comins Pond.
On June 26, 2000, Molly's mother Magi, noticed a mustached man in a white car parked in the lot of the beach where Molly's lifeguard post was. He seemed suspicious at the time, but Molly's mother did not think anything further until after her daughter had disappeared.
The next day, June 27, 2000, Magi drove her daughter Molly near the lifeguard station. Magi reported that she had not seen the strange man there that day, however, another witness reported that he saw a man matching that description in the pond's parking lot just minutes before Molly arrived.
A local worker reportedly saw a similar car parked at a cemetery connected to the pond by a path. Magi was the last known person to see Molly before she disappeared. A few hours later, police contacted Molly's parents to tell them that no lifeguard had been on duty that day and that Molly's belongings had been left unattended at her station.
An extensive search was done, and eventually it became the largest and most expensive search for a missing person ever done in Massachusetts. Molly's case was featured on many tv shows including America's Most Wanted, Unsolved Mysteries, and 48 Hours.
A hunter had seen a blue bathing suit in the woods on Whiskey Hill in Palmer, in the late fall of 2002. In May 2003, this hunter mentioned it and the police were contacted. A search of the area found Molly's body on June 9, 2003, almost three years later.
Molly's body had been found 5 miles from her family home. No cause of death was determined, but investigators believe Molly was murdered and her remains were buried.
There have been a few suspects looked into in relation to Molly's murder. In 2005, a Connecticut man who had been charged with attempted kidnapping in New York was briefly looked into.
Later, in 2009, a man named Rodney Stanger, then residing in Florida, who had been convicted of murdering his girlfriend, had actually lived in Southbridge, MA, a few miles from the town of Warren for more than 20 years.
Rodney had moved to Florida after Molly's murder. Following Rodney's girlfriends murder, Crystal Morrison (the couple had been together for 20 years), Crystal's sister alerted authorities.
Rodney was known to have a similar white car to the one seen the day before Molly disappeared. He was known to also fish in Comins Pond and hunt in the woods where Molly's body had been found. Rodney also matched the description that Magi Bish had reported, however he has not been charged in the case.
While Rodney was being investigated into Molly's murder, he was also questioned about a 1993 murder of a girl named Holly Piirainen. Holly went missing from Sturbridge, and was Molly's age. Molly had actually written a letter of hope to Holly's parents in 1993. Rodney has not been charged in Holly's case either.
In 2012, forensic evidence led authorities to a man named David Pouliot to Holly's case. However, David had died in 2003.
In November 2011, a man named Gerald Battistoni was named a suspect in Molly's death. Gerald had worked as an informant for the Eastern Hampden County Narcotic Task Force. Gerald had spent time in prison for repeatedly raping a teenage girl in the early 90's. He attempted suicide in prison after newspaper articles identified him as a suspect in both Molly and Holly's cases.
Gerald had a criminal record dating back to 1980, had been in the area where Molly's body had been discovered, and resembles the composite sketch of the man Magi saw in the parking lot before her daughter disappeared.
DNA testing was asked to be completed. Gerald died in November 2014. There is no clear answers as to what came of the DNA, but it must not have matched or been completed.
A new person of interest was announced on June 3, 2021, a registered sex offender named Francis P. Sumner Sr. He was found dead inside his home in Spencer, MA, on May 4, 2016. He had a lengthy criminal record but it is unclear why he was connected to the case as a suspect.
On July 9, 1982, Francis was convicted of aggravated rape and kidnapping. He was sentenced to 15-18 years on the rape charge, to be served concurrently with 9-10 years on the kidnapping charges. The earliest he could have been released from prison would have been in 1997. It is unclear how long Francis was incarcerated.
No arrests have been made in Molly Bish's case, however Francis is considered a person of interest. Investigator's have not given up on the case, and encourage the use of familial DNA, hoping that forensic evidence may lead to some answers eventually. Molly's family advocates for child abduction awareness. There is an anonymous tip line that's open for information.
In 2004, Magi and John Bish founded The Molly Bish Center and Foundation in collaboration with Anna Maria College.
Holly Piirainen, the girl who was killed 7 years before Molly, was also found in a wooden area near Hampden County. Police have considered that the two cases could be related. Some of Molly's letter to Holly's family reads,
"I am very sorry. I wish I could make it up to you. Holly is a very pretty girl. She is almost as tall as me. I wish I knew Holly. I hope they found her."
Both cases remain unsolved.
Holly Piirainen's case will be posted tomorrow.

Fairy Names Pt. 2
Fly with you! It’s been a while hasn’t it? Anyway, I’m here for a second part of one of my most popular posts.
The first post listed fairy names that were used in the DS game “Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue” in the create-a-fairy section of the game. While the names provided were feminine, I have pulled all of the masculine fairy names from the original Pixie Hollow game. Some names are repeats from the original post, but I kept them in as I wanted to get this out as soon as possible. I hope you enjoy. Here’s the original post.

19. Parson's Pleasure & The Ponds (2024)
In May and June this year, I co-presented Parson's Pleasure & The Ponds, the debut solo exhibition of the printmaker Duncan Montgomery, at the North Wall Arts Centre in Oxford, and the Highgate Gallery in North London.
Tumblr media
The show featured a series of seventeen original wood engraving prints, made by Duncan between 2021 and 2024. These appeared alongside the exhibition poster (printed by Earthbound Press), two historical prints, and a series of thirteen panels exploring the development and historical background of the new work through text and images.
As a whole, Parson's Pleasure & The Ponds offered a cultural history of freshwater bathing through two particular locations: the nude men's river bathing place at Parson's Pleasure in Oxford (closed 1992), and the bathing ponds on Hampstead Heath.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Background
I met Duncan in 2016 through the gardener Jonny Bruce; in fact our work had shared a platform already through Jonny's magazine, The Germ. I wrote an early article about Parson's Pleasure for The Germ, and Duncan wood-engraved the cover artwork.
We stayed in touch and the collaboration began gradually. The first output was a cover design for Nick March's 2021 EP, Swing Your Partner, which drew on photographs of Parson's Pleasure by Henry Taunt from the 1880s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The project gained momentum in 2022. I finished my PhD and set out on six months of postdoctoral work funded by the Wellcome Foundation, which encompassed the production of an exhibition that would translate my research into other media.
Here: A Fair Resting-Place was the resulting display, at the Birkbeck School of Arts building in Bloomsbury. This was a great chance to experiment with setting Duncan's work (working drawings as well as finished prints) alongside visual and textual contexts – including books, postcards and physical objects (goggles, craft knife, stopped watch, tobacco tin). The idea was that the case's contents resembled an artist's desk, with the green and yellow of a cutting mat providing a background, colour scheme and geometric grid for the objects and images to play off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Development
The dual focus and two-venue schedule of this year's show came together quite naturally; I had lots of material on Parson's Pleasure and knew Oxford well, Duncan had moved to a flat about ten minutes' walk from the Men's Pond on Hampstead Heath and we both enjoyed swimming there and were interested in the site's history. Plus, with a significant uptick in the popularity of 'wild swimming' during the pandemic, we felt confident there would be an audience for the show in both cities. We were in touch with The North Wall and the Highgate Gallery at the Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution from Autumn 2022 and both were brilliant to work with throughout.
The print COSTUMES MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES featured in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Work from Parson's Pleasure & The Ponds also featured in OX Magazine, alongside an article by myself; and I went for a walk with The Oxford Sausage to talk about the show.
The show had a couple of other offshoots. We ran a stall selling prints at the Summer Party of the Highgate Men's Pond Association and the Mixed Pond Association, which took place at the Parliament Hill Fields Lido on the 15th of June. Thanks to both the HMPA and the MPA for having us. We're currently also in talks with the Holly Lodge Community Centre about doing a mini version of the show there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Further credits...
Duncan's works were printed by Phil Abel of Hand and Eye Editions, Martin Clark of Tilley Printing, Pat Randle of Nomad Letterpress, Nick Loaring of The Print Project, and Duncan himself at home.
The prints were framed by Vintiners of Crouch End and the history panels produced by The Printing Centre in Bloomsbury.
The historical prints were: → A Prospect of Hampstead from the Pond at the Bottom of the Heath looking towards Pond Street (1745), drawn by John Baptist Chatelain and engraved by William Henry Toms – very kindly donated by Mohammed Khan; → The Bathing Place by John Whessell, provided by Sanders of Oxford.
A Prospect of Hampstead... (below) is the earliest known image of bathers on Hampstead Heath.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The photographer Lucy Dawkins documented the show for us as it appeared in Highgate (see above), as well as getting some pictures of Duncan and me doing a public talk. Lucy had photographed Here: A Fair Resting-Place, so we knew she'd do a great job and we were super happy with the pictures.

This is one of my reoccuring themes dreams
I'm at home, my dogs find an animal that looks a lot like a baby goat but of not oh boy it's NOTa goat at all Holly duck. For some reason my old high school classmate is obsessed with this abomination, she's crazy okay, threatening me bodily harm if i don't let her have her 'baby', and im pretty sure she did hurt me in some of these dreams before.
this time it was a bit different; my sister was visiting. My sister is often my dreams now so that wasn't strange. But that wasn't the beginning of the dream; i was home alone, very bored, looking for a thing to do, a movie to watch. In this dream we had some alexa-type ai installed, though i needed a little remote control to authorise its actions. The remote was in the kitchen, next to my brothers headphones/airpods. I turned on the tv and asked not-Alexa to like, pick a movie for me from our downloaded collection. As the tv screen was having difficulties I looked to the ceiling. There was a rope? Stretched from side of the room to the other hanging there s but like clothing line or birthday banners. My dogs were going crazy at it, and i noticed there was something crawling inside the rope. Eventually the rope snapped and the thing appeared to be some sort of a squirrel? Max caught it in his mouth by the neck; it appeared to be something wombat-like with big, almost pregnant-like belly. it's neck wasn't snapped so i was like ey boy let's bring it outside and let it go. despite previously being the dead the night now it was a very pleasant sunny day. My sister was there now, just coming into the Garden. The Wombet thing scurried to the water pond, where it proceeded to get stuck in some sort of white sticky filter; also it was a májka the size of my whole hand. My sis and i were watching it crawl across the small pond, then the baby goat abomination (which may have been the wombat previously too?) ate it with its too-human shaped teeth. sis was like 'bro what the duck' and i was like 'yeah that's. That's something that happens sometimes oh duck the crazy girl is already here. Stay away from her okay??' Umm she also made a joking comment about the No goat looking a lot like a spider. i went down the hill following the goat abomination to meet the crazy classmate who was um i think she stained me in the neck with a syringe the size of an elbow? Whatever the effects were they didn't last long because i came to and she was hugging the fucked-up not goat crying and it a god life or whatever. My real animal goats were milking around with caution. Sis came to see what was going on i was like 'stay back' and she was like 'did [crazy classmate] ever hurt you before?' And i was like. Um. No. Couse i didnt want sis to worry too much. Crazy classmate got on her knees and folded herself the ducked up goat in emotional despair and then o woke up. It's 11PM i have to go back to sleep but in not going to like it
what does this even mean,,
i must have had a dream about this sucked up goat at least once maybe twice for me to remember it
We were friends and parted on good terms with the friend, the last time i heard she was doing ok, why is she like this when i dream of her
I had a cake with mascarpone, cheeses are said to cause more drama can that be it??
