After crossing the Horseman’s Bridge (well… one of them anyway) in the Old Dutch Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow, I couldn’t pass up the chance to get a shot of the Mystery Twins in such a legendary place.
I just wish the place was open at night so I could take some moodier shots…

I have in my mind an idea that is fermenting. A world setting, either for RPG or writing or whatever. So I'm just gonna word vomit.
But in my mind I'm seeing a super earth sized continent. Biomes that'd put our continents to shame. Not just lush with green, but terrifying in it's breadth and size. Pine trees as tall as sequoias, thousands of years old. Lakes that are miles deep. Forests that are thousands of miles across.
I imagine it's old. So old. Imagine the stagnation of technology of Star Wars, and apply that to nature. Hundreds of thousands of years, millions even, forests and deserts that never change.
Mankind doesn't cling to survival, but it's presence is inconsequential to this world. There are villages, spread maybe three or four days travel from one another. Cities too, but they are ever sparser. Rather than spread evenly, the villages and cities are insular and self sufficient mostly.
And as I said, it is old. Civilization on earth is about 12,000 years. In this world, it may be a 100,000 years, or longer. Ruins upon ruins upon ruins litter the world, so easily forgotten across such epochs.
It is perhaps a grim dark setting, like Dark Sun, but where Dark Sun has sparse life and nature, a barren world, this world is the opposite. Life and nature is abundant, and cruel, and terrifying.
A village may have entire graveyard kept within the hollow of an ancient tree.
Elves are elegant still but feral, rarely if ever setting foot on the ground.
The North and South poles are vast mountainous regions, home to dwarves and vicious storms.
The tall trees that almost reach the clouds create their own biomes in the sky, and are virtually impossible for man to cut, so it must settle for the regular trees they can manage.
We're talking old school fantasy. Sword and sorcery like in Conan and Sonja. Civilization doesn't know anything beyond the next couple of villages or cities over.
The most important part of any of this is the immense scales. Time and space. The distances to traverse unfathomable. Entire peoples and cultures completely missed, never even seen due to impracticality of travel.
I'm sure there are others who have fleshed this idea out further, be it in novel or film. But that's what's in my head right now.

hi hi hi new sokka and katara art from the avatar legends rpg book very pretty i stared dreamily at them for an hour.
but also I’m going to overanalyze the hell out of them.
The plants they’re surrounded with are common motifs in Chinese art. Sokka has the pine, like this painting by Gao Fenghan:
Tumblr media
The pine symbolizes resilience and wisdom. It’s a tree that stands the test of time. I think these are all pretty fitting for Sokka. Plus, it’s associated with scholars and intellectuals, which Sokka has been particularly linked to especially through his training with Piandao.
Katara has bamboo leaves, like this painting by Shitao:
Tumblr media
The bamboo isn’t as sturdy as the pine, but it’s still resilient. What’s more, it has a hollow center, turning it into a symbol of tolerance and open-mindedness. It’s flexible, it bends but doesn’t break. That feels very accurate to Katara as well.
Together, the pine and the bamboo are two of the Three Friends of Winter, plants that the Chinese admire for their persistence and survival through winter. They represent steadfastness and resilience, and with everything these two siblings have gone through, it’s perfect for them. Of course, winter is also the season associated with the Water Tribe.
Tumblr media
Three Friends of Winter, by Zhao Mengjian
EDIT: found the third friend, the plum blossom, in Katara's uncropped picture. Elegance and inner beauty :)

Thoughts on Mass Effect 1
Similar to what I did for Dragon Age, I wanted to summarize my thoughts on another Bioware Trilogy as I completed each game. I just finished the original Mass Effect as part of the legendary edition, so here we are.
The Shepard that I'm dedicating to for this trilogy is Shiv Shepard, a colonist Sole Survivor. She's a sentinel and, over the course of the game (playing as a commander with survivor's guilt and a vow to save as many lives as possible under her command), maxed out the Paragon meter.
Tumblr media
(As you can see I had a little fun with Photo Mode lol)
Major decisions include: sparing the Rachni Queen, sparing the colonists on Feros, sacrificing Ashley, romancing Kaidan, saving the Council, and promoting Captain Anderson as the human councilman. Besides Ashley, all squadmates were recruited and lived.
Full thoughts in a list of pros and cons under the cut:
The Good:
Graphics: Perhaps because this is legendary edition, the graphics were much better than I was expecting, and I could tell it was made on an upgraded engine than Dragon Age Origins. The characters emoted well, or at least the human and asari ones did.
Ammo: One thing I dislike about shooters is ammo management. Having unlimited ammo was nice for a change, and let me free up my attention to learning the abilities instead.
Voice Acting: Jennifer Hale absolutely carries Female Shepard, she makes the character for me. Other voice actors did great as well.
Interplanetary Politics: It did take me some time to get acquainted with the political structure of the game, but once I did I was intrigued by the unique role humans played in it all as relative newbies to the game, and how differently the drive to prove their species worthy to the alien council manifests in different human characters.
Environments: Besides the side mission planets (I'll get into that), the main story locations like the Citadel were beautifully designed, if a little difficult to navigate at first.
The Bad:
Repetitive Side Missions: MY GOD. I wish I could say these didn't ruin the game for me but they kind of ruined the game for me. I didn't mind the side missions on locations like the Citadel or the main story planets, but every other side quest was basically: land on a remote planet that's a copy of every other planet but with different textures. Get your car stuck in some rocks. Find a base. Clear out enemies in the main room. Find an important file/hostage in the back room. Rinse and repeat. After like 30 of those I wanted to pull my hair out. I get that maybe I didn't have to do all of them, but I also didn't want to be wrong and find out later that sidequests would have saved lives or something.
No Party Banter: Hello? Even Dragon Age Origins had this, and honestly, party banter was at least half the reason why I fell in love with those characters. These characters don't talk to each other except when in an elevator, and that makes them all feel rather hollow. None of them seemed to have a relationship/opinion with other characters, or if they did, it was lukewarm at best. I was disappointed.
Romance: The options are limited, for one. I think I would have chosen Kaidan anyway, but I wish Garrus and/or Tali were available. I didn't choose Liara because I wasn't vibing with it, what with feeling like a research subject more than a love interest to her. I figured Kaidan had some great potential in the beginning, but that was squandered when I continued 90% through the game without so much as a flirtatious line. Come on man. I understand this is a military setting and there are regulations but I need that YEARNING you know. That pining and devotion. I need Roy/Riza 2.0 is what I'm saying. I didn't get even a fraction of that and I'm sad about it.
Talk No Jutsuu: Sorry but even with the maxed-out Charm skill and Paragon dialogue options I don't think Shepard would have so easily talked down some of these people. I get that RPGs take liberties with this, hell Dragon Age does it too, but it seems much more glaring an issue in this game. I'll be talking to a homicidal cult leader and because I say "don't do this, this isn't in your heart uwu" he's like oh shit you're right I'll turn myself in. I don't buy it and it takes me out of it.
Glitches: More than even Dragon Age, I ran into a lot of glitches that would make sections nearly unplayable and I would have to restart from a long-past save, which was incredibly frustrating.
The Squad:
Kaidan: I've read that people think Kaidan is boring but I don't think he is. I actually really like that he's a good-natured well-adjusted guy that doesn't have any drama surrounding him, despite the trauma he suffered in his past. He's got layers, and it makes him feel more real to talk to than some of the other teammates, which is why I guess I gravitated to him as a romantic interest. Still would have liked some more romantic lines though.
Ashley: I was not a fan of hers, in the beginning, what with her automatic distrust of all the alien crew. After talking to her some more about her family and motivations, she did start to grow on me, but it wasn't enough to keep me from sacrificing her on Virmire.
Garrus: I can see why he's so popular, he's fun and a good-hearted renegade. With Kaidan, he became my most used teammate simply because I liked his commentary on things. We'll see if I ever decide to romance him though since he felt less like a love interest to me and more like a wily little brother I had to reel in sometimes lol
Tali: Tali my beloved. I love her, she's so sweet and I loved her excitement around technology. I would have romanced her if I could. I don't have much more to say besides I'm excited to see her in future games.
Liara: I am completely neutral on Liara. I liked her well enough but she referred to everything with such a sterile scientific lens that it was hard for me to care about her deeper than that. I'm curious where her character will go though, I know she's important to the franchise overall.
Wrex: I was also rather neutral about Wrex, though I liked his determination to overcome the Krogan disease affecting his people. I just never felt like I had a great reason to bring him along.
Overall I thought Mass Effect was just okay. The villain was serviceable, the plot was followable, and the missions were engaging enough to keep me playing. I'd say the only reason why I stuck it out though was to get to Mass Effect 2, which I hear is much better, and I really hope that's true.
Overall Score: 6/10

can i ask what kinda games you play? and/or gaming suggestions too?🥺🥺🥺
Of course! I play such a weird variety of games. If anyone plays any of these too it's be great to have more people to game with - please note that I'm not competitive I just like to vibe and have fun. 😊😊
Warframe - free!
Valorant - free!
Coral Island - £19.99 - my lovely friend gifted this, I haven't had the chance to play it yet but they're saying it has so many diversity and accessibility options!
My Time at Sandrock - £19.99 - again my lovely friend gifted me this and I've played this so much, has great accessibility options like slowing down the times of days so you don't get super stressed out!
Stardew Valley - £10.99 - my lovely friend gifted this too. There's also mods for this game which makes things so much easier.
Apex Legends - free!
Dead by Daylight - £14.99 - tw: horror - they did have this for free on Epic Games for a short period of time so always check out their free games!
Minecraft - £24.99 - I don't know why it's so relaxing to strip mine and build pretty things sometimes.
Resident Evil 5 - £13.99 - please somebody get this and we can play together.
Don't Starve / Don't Starve Together - £7.19 or £10.99 - this game stresses me out because I don't know what I'm doing but it'd be great to learn.
Fortnite - free! - I play this with my friends kids and it's honestly so much better when you don't take it seriously.
SMITE - free! - I have played 2,543 hours on this scREAMS.
And then some other cool games some of which I haven't played because they're expensive but: Heavy Rain, God of War, Metro, Divinity, Firewatch, Hollow Knight, Last of Us, Borderlands, Stray, 7 Days to Die, Far Cry, Never Alone (a game made alongside Ishmael Hope who is Iñupiaq and Tlingit!).
I would also rec TheRadBrad on youtube for gameplays because not everyone (me) can drop £40 or £80 on a game.
I also asked my friend who is the lovely soul that bought me the games listed above and: my time at sandrock, coral island, stardew valley, binding of isaac, dead cells, sims 4 (which is free to play now base game only) slime rancher 2 (if they don't want early access games, there's slime rancher (1) and my time at portia) any of the telltale games, lego the movie 1 and 2 the game, Beacon Pines, if they want to cry Spiritfarer, 7 days to die, FEZ, Digimonstory Cybersleuth for the rpg fans, staxel,yooka-laylee(for the banjo kazooie fans out there), overcooked (for the co-opers), coromon (for the pokemon player) portal and portal 2 (for the puzzler) borderlands, fallout and bioshock franchises (for the fps players that want more story to their games) cat quest 1 and 2(for those who want a cutesey rpg) evoland 1 and 2 (for those who want to explore the evolution of video game graphics/audio through a game) the night of the rabbit(for the point and click lovers that like fairy tales) orwell and orwell: ignorance is strength (for the one that likes a story driven game about a type of big brother dystopian world) summer in mara (for those that want a cutsey game that's relaxing).

I hope this fanfic creates a fandom ngl!
What games do you play (any type)?
That would be wild. Feels like that sometimes when I get fanart for it and stuff ^-^
I play a lot of games, table top included but Ill focus on video games here.
I really like platformers both 3d and 2d. Celeste, Hollow Knight, A Hat in Time, Tinykin, Rogue Legacy 2, and Shovel Knight are some of my most obsessively played games in the last few years. There is something so satisfying about a game with satisfying movement
I really enjoy roguelites such as Hades, Rogue Legacy 2, Into the Breech, and Binding of Issac have all been favs. Something about honing your skills and building up to overcome a great obsticle feels great. Clearing Heat 36 in Hades was one of my proudest moments as a gamer.
I also have enjoyed every Super Giant Game that has come out Bastion, Hades, and Pyre all being bangers. I also really enjoyed Transistor mechanically, even if I have some misgivings about its story.
Story focused games are hit or miss for me, but when they hit they hit hard. Night in the Woods and Beacon Pines were both delightful stories to explore.
The Return of Obra Din is in my top 10 absolutely, even though trying to categorize it is difficult. It's really its own thing.
I'm not big into Character Action games with the huge exception of the Soulslike games by Fromsoft. Sekiro is definitely my favorite among them, but I enjoyed all the Dark Souls and Elden Ring quite a lot. Haven't played much of Bloodborne tragically do to a lack of PS4.
I really loved Fallout 3 and especially New Vegas, but soured on Fallout 4. I also liked my playthroughs of Skyrim back in the day. RPG's that allow me to really immerse myself are my jam.
I also just love most of Valve's shooter catalogue. Half Life, Portal, and Team Fortress 2 were my top tier games in high school. Portal 2 remains one of my favorite games of all time. I liked the first 2 bioshocks for similar reasons (Infinity mostly pissed me off)
Oh I used to be huge into strategy games. Total War Series, Civilization, Fire Emblem, Advanced Wars, X-Com, Humankind. They used to be my obsession. I haven't played them as much lately, but they still hold a place in my heart.
...
Wow! I had a lot more to say than I thought. Thanks for this Ask Anon, it was fun thinking back on a hobby I've put so much time into.

Quest for the Frozen Flame - Book 2 session 7
Man my posting of these recaps is super scuffed atm but im trying to at least not be a whole week behind lol. This is from Tuesday
So we started with heading back to the Calamity Caves to tell the following they can stay at Vare’s homestead while we scouted the valley, instead of them having to camp in the caves. Then we proceeded to follow the waymarker we found by the river when we first came into the valley, which lead to a fork in the river and another waymarker. Like any good rpg player, we ignored the obvious go this way marker and headed opposite the waymarker first following the river to an ancient shrine. A circle of stones each carved with a different deity, with a smaller offering circle in the middle. An interesting location but not much to do here at the moment for us.
From there we headed south to the direction the waymarker was pointed, that hex still being adjacent, into a forest with a lake at the center. There was a lot of strange frost around that gave us a lot of concern but we didnt find out the source till later, it was nothing local and was in fact from the White Dragon who has laid claim to the valley. The frost threw off our investigation theories for a while cause we failed to make the knowledge check. Not far from the lake was a tree that was exceptionally large and ancient, a shrine to Fandarra had been make inside the hollow of its roots. Interesting there was a trio of Mendevian Crusaders outside the hollow “discussing” who should go in first to deal with the “spirits” that had been plaguing their nearby camp. Eventually we agreed to go check it out for them and it turned out it was just a bunch of Pine Leshys playing pranks on the crusaders. Having seen how we handled the situation with the Leshys, we were addressed by the dryad that lived inside the anceint tree. The Dryad asked us to go check out what has happened to her brother as she can no longer feel his presence in the valley.
Having helped the crusaders with their spirit plight they agreed to take us back to their camp on the other side of the lake. We met with their commanding office in their for, he said we could stay there and use it as a bit of a base for the party to range from. The crusaders are kind of stuck here until they can deal with some adjacent problems, and are unwilling to pack up and leave until they are dealt with, so we agreed to help them too :P
Next session probably helping the crusaders which means Tatzleworms and Undead :P.

Top New Fantasy Books in August 2020
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
It’s summer. Lots of people are staying home. It might be a good time for a book. Here are some of the upcoming books we’re anticipating:
Join the Den of Geek Book Club!
Top New Fantasy Books August 2020
The Tyrant Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson
Type: Novel  Publisher: Tor Release date: Aug. 11
Den of Geek says: The Baru Cormorant series features as its hero a mentally ill accountant with the fate of an empire at its fingers. The third book in the series promises more dark, twisty introspection and grim, creative world-building.
Publisher’s summary: The hunt is over. After fifteen years of lies and sacrifice, Baru Cormorant has the power to destroy the Imperial Republic of Falcrest that she pretends to serve. The secret society called the Cancrioth is real, and Baru is among them.
But the Cancrioth’s weapon cannot distinguish the guilty from the innocent. If it escapes quarantine, the ancient hemorrhagic plague called the Kettling will kill hundreds of millions…not just in Falcrest, but all across the world. History will end in a black bloodstain.
Is that justice? Is this really what Tain Hu hoped for when she sacrificed herself?
Baru’s enemies close in from all sides. Baru’s own mind teeters on the edge of madness or shattering revelation. Now she must choose between genocidal revenge and a far more difficult path―a conspiracy of judges, kings, spies and immortals, puppeteering the world’s riches and two great wars in a gambit for the ultimate prize.
If Baru had absolute power over the Imperial Republic, she could force Falcrest to abandon its colonies and make right its crimes.
Buy The Tyrant Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson.
Beowulf: A New Translation by Maria Dahvana Headley
Type: Epic Poem  Publisher: MCD x FSG Originals Release date: Aug. 25
Den of Geek says: Headley got an intimate look at Beowulf in the modern interpretation The Mere Wife. She turns the intellect behind that inventive, scathing novel about complex and furious women to a translation of the poem featuring new research.
Publisher’s summary: Nearly twenty years after Seamus Heaney’s translation of Beowulf―and fifty years after the translation that continues to torment high-school students around the world―there is a radical new verse translation of the epic poem by Maria Dahvana Headley, which brings to light elements that have never before been translated into English, recontextualizing the binary narrative of monsters and heroes into a tale in which the two categories often entwine, justice is rarely served, and dragons live among us.
A man seeks to prove himself as a hero. A monster seeks silence in his territory. A warrior seeks to avenge her murdered son. A dragon ends it all. The familiar elements of the epic poem are seen with a novelist’s eye toward gender, genre, and history―Beowulf has always been a tale of entitlement and encroachment, powerful men seeking to become more powerful, and one woman seeking justice for her child, but this version brings new context to an old story. While crafting her contemporary adaptation of Beowulf, Headley unearthed significant shifts lost over centuries of translation. Buy Beowulf: A New Translation by Maria Dahvana Headley.
The Wizard Knight by Gene Wolfe
Type: Novel (Reprint)  Publisher: Tor Books Release date: Aug. 11
Den of Geek says: Gene Wolfe is a modern master of fantasy. This reprint of a 2004 duology provides both original stories in one paperback package.
Publisher’s summary: A young man in his teens is transported from our world to a magical realm consisting of seven levels of reality. Transformed by magic into a grown man of heroic proportions, he takes the name Sir Able of the High Heart and sets out on a quest to find the sword that has been promised to him, the blade that will help him fulfill his ambition to become a true hero―a true knight.
Inside, however, Sir Able remains a boy, and he must grow in every sense to survive what lies ahead…
Buy The Wizard Knight by Gene Wolfe.
Top New Fantasy Books July 2020
The Book of Dragons: An Anthology by Jonathan Strahan
Type: Anthology  Publisher: Harper Voyager  Release date: July 7
Den of Geek says: I’m always looking for a good book about dragons, and this incredible list of authors promises adventurous and unique stories. Anne Leckie, Zen Cho, Seanan Maguire, J.Y. Yang, Patricia A McKillip, Brooke Bolander … it’s an astounding, literary-flavored list of people qualified to write cool creatures.
Publisher’s summary: Here there be dragons . . .
From China to Europe, Africa to North America, dragons have long captured our imagination in myth and legend. Whether they are rampaging beasts awaiting a brave hero to slay or benevolent sages who have much to teach humanity, dragons are intrinsically connected to stories of creation, adventure, and struggle beloved for generations.
Bringing together nearly thirty stories and poems from some of the greatest science fiction and fantasy writers working today— Garth Nix, Scott Lynch, R.F. Kuang, Ann Leckie & Rachel Swirsky, Daniel Abraham, Peter S. Beagle, Beth Cato, Zen Cho, C. S. E Cooney, Aliette de Bodard, Amal El-Mohtar, Kate Elliott, Theodora Goss, Ellen Klages, Ken Liu, Seanan Maguire, Patricia A McKillip, K. J. Parker, Kelly Robson, Michael Swanwick, Jo Walton, Elle Katharine White, Jane Yolen, Kelly Barnhill, Brooke Bolander, Sarah Gailey, and J. Y. Yang—and illustrated by award-nominated artist Rovina Cai with black-and-white line drawings specific to each entry throughout, this extraordinary collection vividly breathes fire and life into one of our most captivating and feared magical creatures as never before and is sure to become a treasured keepsake for fans of fantasy, science fiction, and fairy tales.
Buy The Book of Dragons by Jonathan Strahan on Amazon
Or What You Will by Joe Walton
Type: Novel  Publisher: Tor Books Release date: July 7
Den of Geek says: Jo Walton is a writer’s writer, highly praised but still generally skating under the radar. I found her 2014 My Real Children to not nearly live up to its very high concept, but she’s one of those authors with technical prowess who is at least worth checking out for context for women’s science fiction. The metafiction plot sounds fun.
Publisher’s summary: He has been too many things to count. He has been a dragon with a boy on his back. He has been a scholar, a warrior, a lover, and a thief. He has been dream and dreamer. He has been a god.
But “he” is in fact nothing more than a spark of idea, a character in the mind of Sylvia Harrison, 73, award-winning author of thirty novels over forty years. He has played a part in most of those novels, and in the recesses of her mind, Sylvia has conversed with him for years.
But Sylvia won’t live forever, any more than any human does. And he’s trapped inside her cave of bone, her hollow of skull. When she dies, so will he.
Now Sylvia is starting a new novel, a fantasy for adult readers, set in Thalia, the Florence-resembling imaginary city that was the setting for a successful YA trilogy she published decades before. Of course he’s got a part in it. But he also has a notion. He thinks he knows how he and Sylvia can step off the wheel of mortality altogether. All he has to do is convince her.
Buy Or What You Will by Jo Walton on Amazon
The Adventure Zone: Petals to the Metal
Type: Graphic Novel  Publisher: First Second  Release date: July 14
Den of Geek says: The Adventure Zone is a wildly popular humorous fantasy podcast. It’s part of the big 2010s wave of Dungeons & Dragons coming back into the geek space. Especially for someone who might not want to listen to hundreds of episodes of a podcast, the illustrated version does a good job of smoothing out the story into a graphic novel format without removing the goofy chaos of the original podcast.
Publisher’s summary: START YOUR ENGINES, friends, Clint McElroy and sons Griffin, Justin, and Travis hit the road again with Taako, Magnus and Merle, the beloved agents of chaos from the #1 New York Times bestselling graphic novels illustrated by Carey Pietsch, The Adventure Zone: Here There Be Gerblins and The Adventure Zone: Murder on the Rockport Limited.
Our boys have gone full-time at the Bureau of Balance, and their next assignment is a real thorny one: apprehending The Raven, a master thief who’s tapped into the power of a Grand Relic to ransack the city of Goldcliff. Local life-saver Lieutenant Hurley pulls them out of the woods, only to throw them headlong into the world of battle wagon racing, Goldcliff’s favorite high-stakes low-legality sport and The Raven’s chosen battlefield. Will the boys and Hurley be able to reclaim the Relic and pull The Raven back from the brink, or will they get lost in the weeds?
Based on the beloved blockbuster podcast where three brothers and their dad play a tabletop RPG in real time, The Adventure Zone: Petals to the Metal has it all: blossoming new friendships, pining for outlaw lovers, and a rollicking race you can root for!
Buy The Adventure Zone: Petals to the Metal

taroris hat auf deinen Eintrag geantwortet “taroris hat auf deinen Eintrag geantwortet “I discovered Hollow...”
Mmm i don't know the first two but will check on them, after playing hk I have the feeling you have a very good taste ☺️ Honestly, me too hahaha i just live with the hope to see new content one day Ohh that one! You see, it was something I wrote at 2 am, that's why it's so short Thanks to you for writting it! If I remember well probably I commented on duel gone wrong? I really love that story
I would tell my taste more broad... but I have a weakness for games which have hidden lore. While Okami doesn’t really feel into hidden lore, more in lore that is based on myths, it is one of my favourite games, because it just has everything. Timeless graphics, gorgeous music, fun gameplay, fantastic characters, a nicely set up story based on japanese myths and you play as a dog! What is not to love? Terranigma is a very philosophical game. It plays like an Action Adventure with RPG elements and your hero gets tasked to rebuild the world (our planet earth btw), which was destroyed in a catastrophe many years ago. The game asks a lot of pretty deep questions and has hidden lore to uncover, as well as many references to real life places and people. I rec it so, so much, but everyone who knows and likes this game is german like me, because it was pretty popular in my country.  Okami you can get for PS4, PC and Switch (also available for PS2, PS3 and Wii), Terranigma was an SNES game, good luck finding an original, I would advise to play a ROM.  Hey, for a 2 AM fic it really touched me ^^  Aaah, Duel Gone Wrong! One of my first multichapter! That whole thing is nothing but Knights of Gwyn slice of life, I loved writing it so much. All the pining NK and Orn did and Artorias trying so hard ^^ I almost renamed that fic “Apology Cookies”.

Ten Questions Tag
Another one! I was tagged by @sassypandacandy for this one! The questions are, I believe, from @theouterdark (giving credit).
Rules: Answer ten questions, tag ten people, and ask ten questions of your own.
1. What is your biggest writing hurdle?
Staying focused. I’m really bad at staying focused on a single project for any extended period of time and it’s killing me.
2. What is the work of fiction (written, filmed or otherwise) that made you interested in storytelling?
I don’t know if I have a specific answer to this! Maybe The Legend of Holly Claus by Brittney Ryan? I’d read mostly books by men before that, so seeing that a woman could create big magical stories centred around girls was a turning point in my understanding of who wrote books about what topics.
3. Name the most underrated character in fiction. Why did you choose them?
Vassa from Sarah Porter’s Vassa in the Night just because not nearly enough people have read that book. It’s a super weird book, but it’s wonderful and enchanting and definitely one of my favourites.
4. Do you have a day job you love, or one you would drop in an instant if you could make money off your writing?
I’m looking for a day job currently. Ideally I’d like to make enough to live off of my writing, but really right now I just want to be able to pay rent in January.
5. What subjects in fiction are squicky to you?
I think all of my squicks are pretty normal. Any type of sexual assault, including rape. Child abuse. Any type of sexual relationships between family members. Animal abuse. When kids or animals are killed or tortured.
6. What’s the most experimental piece of writing you’ve done, and why did you write it?
I wrote a short story in high school for my writer’s craft class that’s as close to experimental as I’ve gotten. We had to write something with the setting as the most important part, so I wrote a piece about a girl living in a city who doesn’t consider it her home and is kind of unravelling. Here’s part of it:
She prefers the harshness of the outside to the calm of her insides. Nothing moves beyond the tightly wound skin-muscle-ligament-bone contraption that jerks through existence like a puppet on rusted wires. Her heart tick-tocks and her blood gets pumped and her mind connects one thought to the next but she is empty of everything but the shadows pooling in the little places between ribs and behind knees and under fingernails. There is no music in her mind or dancing in her eyes, just memories she would rather lose.
She decomposes herself down to a set of facts to grasp tightly to when the nights are long and dark and lonely: she is a carbon based creature made of one hundred trillion cells that enjoys black coffee and cigarettes and the soft sound of rain against the window in the middle of the night because she cannot tell if it is echoing or if it is still raining. Her favourite colour is pale blue. She is probably not as alone as she thinks she is.
7. Do you budget your time or are you more of a free-spirit?
Hahahaha I’m a free-spirit. I can’t budget my time if my life depended on it.
8. What’s the one project/story/work that most makes you want to jump ship on your current WIP?
I don’t think I have one? I let myself drift between works when my main WIP (Indigo Wars) isn’t working for whatever reason. Usually I’ll work on something else, Remnants or Open Seas or Pine Hollow, for a few days and then I’ll fall back in love with Indigo Wars. The little breaks really help me from burning out.
9. Are there any genres you despise, or have no plans writing in?
Not really? I’m not very good at writing pure romance because I don’t find them all that interesting, but I still write them for fluff when my other WIPs are too heavy. I doubt I’ll write any non-fiction just because I don’t feel like I have anything interesting or new to say in that genre, but I’d be willing to try it with someone who had something to say but no writing skills.
10. Have you ever played a pen and paper RPG? If not, is it something you’re interested in?
I have not, but I’ve had many people trying to convince me to try my hand at it. I actually might be playing a regency-themed one on New Years Eve, so stay tuned!
Woo! More questions answered! Gosh, I do love talking about myself.
Again, I’ve tagged a bunch of people for the last line tag game already today, but if you feel like answering these questions feel free to pretend I’ve tagged you!

World of Qarqa: to be drawn
This is a list for myself (and potentially for artists i may commission) of stuff i want to be drawn in the future to develop the setting of Cypora’s Guide to Becoming an Evil Queen, the fantasy world of Qarqa.
Qarqa is a high fantasy setting based on two key sources of folklore: Jewish, and North American. Because of that, it differs strongly from your usual elves & dwarves Tolkienesque fantasy setting in many ways, but also deliberately uses aspects of those as a base—there are people living in Cypora’s world who think that the universe works according to rules we might recognize as those of a tabletop RPG like Dungeons and Dragons.
New commissions will depend on how much i receive in weekly donations (more info at this link).
Characters
Cypora Schenk: the protagonist. A tavern-keeper’s daughter. A transgender girl; pale-skinned with a too-slim body hardened by work & later training set beneath a large and unruly puff of curly auburn hair. Codes as Ashkenazic/Persian mix.
Alícha de Matos: the deuteragonist. An orchard owner’s daughter. A transgender girl, short and athletic with a martial artist’s build. Usually wears high-waisted denim trousers and a dark green jacket from a naval uniform, with mulberry-hued trim added and the coat of arms of Martıkoy sewn onto the front (see below). Codes as Sephardic.
Acantha: the corn dolly. A feathertop; a being made of corn husks and straw in the likeness of a modestly-dressed young woman almost constantly smoking a long-stemmed pipe. Wields an old scythe and a beaten but well-sharpened hay knife.
Adara: a sister-in-law. Strale’s wife.
Aletheia: a maid. A tall golem made of wet clay, which serves to keep the innermost areas of the dungeon in working order.
Almaz: an adventuring warrior. Dark-skinned and heavily armored woman with finely braided hair kept in a tight, high ponytail. Later: harder, colder, with a false eye made of gold and scars around it.
Astruc: a swashbuckler. Androgyne grandchild of Zalema, a chubby and bouncy type who likes to make their presence known with flashy displays and bold actions. Wears lots of colors, beads in their hair. Codes as mixed ancestry.
Bang: the tinker. A yeahoh; a kind of bigfoot notable for a broader frame and darker fur. Disguises himself as merely a tall, hirsute, & full-bearded human by wearing leather traveling garb that covers most of his body. A transgender boy, younger than he seems at first.
Earsel I: a dead emperor.
Enosch Schenk: an elder brother.
Fagim Fossoyeur: an undertaker. A single father trying to do the best by his daughters, glad they have good friends.
Guta Schenk: an tavern-keeper. Cypora’s mother, short and exceptionally strong. Codes as Ashkenazic.
Ishvi Med: Keturah’s baby brother.
Ivorde Consley: a dead businessman.
Joia-Douce Bleustein: a loup-garou.
Keturah Med: the beekeeper. Daughter of a family of mead-makers, chubby nerd with an interest in all arthropods. Very dark-skinned, with an especially voluminous afro. Wears reinforced beekeeping garb as armor. Codes as Beta Israel.
Libet Schenck: a middle sister.
Licoricia Fossoyeur: the angelspawn/naphil. Daughter of an undertaker and an angel; brown skin and long, loosely braided hair kept back in a low ponytail. Her eyes are an unnatural blue not found among mortals, and more of them open all over her body (and in the air beyond it) when she is agitated. Armed with a sharpened shovel. Codes as an African-American Jew.
Madrona: a witch. Acantha’s creator, a wise old bubbe in a simple gray dress, usually hunched over so much that her full height of nearly two meters is not apparent. Codes as Litvak.
Melisende: a healer. A lutin, voluptuous and mature at about 2′3″, able to take the form of a white cat.
Musa (formerly Marx in early drafts) Schenk: a tavern-keeper’s husband. Codes as a Persian Jew.
Orangella Fossoyeur: the demonspawn/mazik. Daughter of an undertaker and a shedah (demoness); her feet look like those of a giant chicken, or maybe a dinosaur. Noticeably paler than her sister Licoricia or father Fagim. Codes as a biracial African-American & Ashkenazic Jew.
Pesche Schenk: an eldest sister. Tall & sturdily built, her curves cover working muscle. Widely admired for her healthful looks and dedication.
Poncella de Matos: an apple orchard owner.
Raduard: an adventuring mystic. All narrow angles, thin-lipped and pale eyed.
Ravid: a sibling-in-law. Libet’s spouse.
The Rear Admiral: a monster. A giant cecalia clad in a naval uniform sewn together from ships’ sails, dyed green and set with ornaments of gold thread. It had a cluster of barnacles in place of a beard, and kept its hair in the most filthy matted parody of dreadlocks you could imagine outside of a folk music festival. Its tentacles were disproportionately thick compared to its upper body.
Scoloaster Spitznogle: an undead. A vampir, wrapped in a shroud and with too-long nails; her sharp teeth are exposed by her lack of lips.
Shiaroc pla Aurm: a lizard woman. Distinguished by abundant scars and light stripes, as well as an unusually thick tail. Wears a high-collared heavy leather jacket and skirt as armor, reinforced with slats of exotic hardwoods.
Shokh: the Schenk family’s reliable old ox, a great and powerful critter. Reference “Belted Galloway” breed.
Simham: a spice trader. A handsome but anxious young man who has traveled a long way and thinks very highly of Enosch.
Strale Schenk: a second brother.
The Old Goat: an overlord. A gigantic goatman who served as the first overlord of Dungeon #1540, two and a half meters tall but very slender. He soaked his fur in pine tar to stick bits of flint in it as armor, and wielded an axe that magically dripped blood, together with an enchanted lantern.
The Stranger: a visitor. A “phantom monster” that observes the inhabitants of Dungeon #1540. Reference the Flatwoods Monster.
Toiba: a boss. The leader of the kapelyushniklekh, she wears a fine bowler hat decorated with a plume of feathers that doubles her height.
Tomer Med: Keturah’s father. A man with a very large belly, full cheeks, and exceedingly long dreadlocks.
Toussaint: a prophet. A mothman who believes he is the envoy of the goddess Misfortuna, whom nobody has ever heard of.
Vivard: a novice. An inexperienced adventurer who took to the lifestyle as a means to rise above his station as an orphan.
Dom Xandre Nunos: A restaurant owner. A famously skilled arm-wrestler fond of challenging rowdy patrons.
Zalema: An old salt. A man built like the timbers of an old dock, sturdy and weathered, and gay as the day is long. Codes as Romaniote.
Tzufit Med: Keturah’s mother. A tall woman with very dark skin, and high cheekbones.
Groups of People
People of the Land: the general term for any of a number of ethnic groups united by shared history as former nomadic peoples and many common religious and cultural standards. Code as Jewish; “Imperialized” code as westernized/assimilated, “Outlanders” code as nomadic and more warlike.
Anakim: humans descended from giants, usually bearing one or more disproportionately overgrown body parts.
Anasha: Westerners among the People of the Land. Code as Middle Eastern Jews.
Djente: People of the Land from the equatorial coasts. Code as Sephardim & related groups of Jews.
Dungeon Explorers’ Union of Martıkoy & Kósta Estridia: a recently formed organization, contentious and constantly at risk of splitting into smaller groups.
Guildniks: the Guild of Inspethian Adventurers and Associates, a more formalized organization. Members are well-equipped and expected to be presentable, receiving polished membership badges reflecting status & level of contribution to the Guild.
Haints: dybbuks and gilgulim, all the incoroporeal or semi-corporeal spirits of the living who linger beyond the grave. The exact distinction between the two types is a matter of debate, so many gloss them both simply as haints.
Icosans: the ethnic group making up the Icarian Empire’s ruling class. Tend towards exceptionally pale skin, often flushed, or discolored bluish-grey by trendy alchemical treatments; small noses and thin, colorless lips.
Janam: People of the Land from the far west, notable for a rich musical tradition. Code as Indian (specifically Kerala) Jews.
Kindaunkeyt: easterners among the People of the Land. Code as Ashkenazim & related groups of Jews.
Mondiens: an ethnic group closely related to the Icosans. Code as northwestern European gentiles.
Sebat (pending rename): far southerners among the People of the Land. Code as Jews of African ancestry.
Valley Union: the Adventurer’s Union of The Lower Alstuc Valley. More rag-tag and informal, the few Union Halls being somewhere to cut the dust and rest your boots rather than a proper meeting-place.
Zombies: humans brought back from death on a “budget resurrection”, not truly alive but more resistant to death. White-eyed and often showing grievous wounds that would fell a living being.
Objects/Places/Things
Aleftav: the traditional abjad used among the People of the Land, also called “the Old Script”.
Arms of Martıkoy: Murrey, a gull displayed argent.
Alícha’s Axes: paired light axes weighted & honed for combat instead of work.
Bitternut Hollow: a village in the hills. Reference Appalachian communities, Juhuri, Georgian Jews.
Alícha’s Bow & Arrows: a short bow and a bundle of finely made arrows, made from reforged & recarved magical amulets. Crossroads: a small village named simply for being centered upon the crossing of two ancient major roads, a popular stop for both travelers and adventurers.
Dungeon #568: The Sea King’s Castle. Formerly the Sixth Battle Squadron of the Icarian Imperial Navy, a set of enormous ironclad vessels interlinked with bridges and chains, warped into the form of a floating fortress. The central vessel is shaped into a likeness of an impossibly vast & monstrous octopus.
Dungeon #1532: The Inspeth Delve. Former site of Inspeth University, a dungeon populated by monsters associated with academia and the strange sciences formerly studied at the university.
Dungeon #1540: The Timber Barony. Former home & business of Ivorde Consley, a dungeon built around the processing and sale of lumber both conventional and exotic. Outwardly resembles a fortified town with walls of living trees integrown to form a barrier.
Endless Cauldron: produces an infinite reservoir of thin, nutritious porridge.
Vivard’s Espada Ancha: a short, broad, double-edged sword with a D-shaped hand guard
Ever-Burning Lantern: an enchanted lumber-camp lamp that always produces light.
Flying Canoes: enchanted small boats. Difficult to maneuver due to the lesser resistance of air compared to water.
Golden Beehive: a magical mead-producing fountain.
Alicha’s Hatchet: a plain, utilitarian, but reliable small axe.
High-Stepping Boots: Cowhand-style leather boots set with designs of birds and feathers in rich colors on a black-dyed background. Enchanted to allow flight by creating propulsion from the heels.
Los Soldados: the barren coast north of Martıkoy, with abundant jagged rock formations.
Martıkoy: a coastal town mostly set on the slope leading to the shore and wrapping around a wide, peaceful bay. I had a weird mix of San Francisco and Sleepy Hollow in my mind when I was writing scenes there.
Mirror of the Distant Eye: a small hand mirror enchanted to allow two-way communication via other mirrors produced at the same time, even over great distances.
Seed-Grown Shelter: a permanent shelter in the form of a live tree with a hollow large enough for several people to fit within, grown from a single magic seed.
Sharkspawn Sack: a leather bag full of shark teeth that conjures a magical shark made of whatever material the bag is thrown against.
Cypora’s Shepherds’ Axe: a ciupaga made for work rather than show, sturdy with a good axe head and a sharp steel point at the other end.
the Stafroph: the Icosan alphabet.
The Stone Rooster: an oversized granite carving of a chicken, enchanted to crow thrice when Dungeon #1540 has a new overlord.
Vuègbòrd: “Void-Boundary”, the sword of Almaz. An impossibly sharp short sword, so dark that it reflects no light whatsoever, making it appear two-dimensional at first.
Windknot: rope or cord tied with a special magical knot that conjures a powerful wind when untied.
Creatures
Angels: agents of the divine, awful and strange with too many eyes or wings, or arms or mouths, or all or none. Known classes include the Harisot (the “Ruinations”) and Rekbaim (the “Vehicles”)
Axehandle Hounds: Sturdy, long-bodied canines with short legs and sharp metal axes for muzzles. They supplement much of their diet with wood.
Beach Beasts: monsters commonly associated with marine & island dungeons, a twisted mingling of mammalian, avian, and reptilian aspects. Reference the Montauk Monster.
Cecaelias: humanoid above the waist, with the tentacled end of an octopus, squid, or cuttlefish where the legs should be. Often dress after the manner of Icosan naval officers, they appear to have a sense of ranks.
Dogs, Talking: some dogs talk. It makes it easier for them to own stuff, like clothing, jewelry, and so forth.
Duendes: little people, mischievous and uncanny, often subtly integrated into human society. Average around 60 centimeters in height.
Feathertops: Wrought sewn together from the stuff of scarecrows, animated with a feather amulet and an enchanted smoking pipe. They are more extroverted than golems.
Fishmen: Icarian soldiers twisted into piscine forms, with huge dark eyes and scaly skin.
Goatmen: feral humanoids with the heads and legs of goats and shaggy-haired bodies of great strength.
Golems: Wrought made of wet clay or other flexible materials, usually in humanoid form. They tend to take things literally, and speak so little that most think them incapable of it.
Globsters: animate masses of undead marine life congealed into a gelatinous form.
Goblins: silvery-skinned, bat eared creatures that are highly resistant to injury. Reference the Hopkinsville Goblins.
Kapelyushnikles: Miniature people notable for mischief and wearing excellent hats of all kinds, and great skill in the care of draft animals. Knee-high to a toddler; each one speaks with a distinct accent with little to no relation to the others.
Lizard People: Towering, broad-bodied and long-necked beings with dark scute-covered forms and long tails, paired with shaggy manes of hair. Reference pelycosaurs.
Loups-Garous: else called Volkelaks, humans able to turn into tremendous, powerful wolves.
Lutins: Shapeshifting little people, often taking the form of rabbits or cats. About as big on average as a cat on its hind legs.
Mazikim: the result of demons and humans having children, mazikim tend to have features of both, and sometimes neither.
Mothmen: often mistaken for a lesser kind of angel, these enigmatic beings stand above the tallest humans and have great, glowing red eyes. What appear to be otherwise featureless faces conceal wide mouths lined with tiny, very sharp teeth. Reference pterosaurs (esp. Anurognathus) and owls.
Nehashim: dragons; a wide and mutable class of creature where even among siblings they can range from great whale-serpents to creatures almost indistinguishable from humans.
Nephilim: the children of angels and humans, they tend to have notably beautiful features and incredibly strong bodies, while bearing at least one overtly monstrous physical trait.
Sei’rim: antelope-hoofed creatures of the wilderness, vain demons fond of forcing or coercing humans into serving them as if they were gods.
Shedim: demons of shadow, looking in their true form like gray-skinned humans with the feet of fowl or dinosaurs. They are masters of shapeshifting, and craft smoke and shadow as humans do with metal and wood.
Shreteles: especially tiny people, barely as tall as a fist, notable for their magic of abundance. The ones in question dress as lumberjacks.
Vampirs: living dead that thirst for human blood, they have strange powers but a number of weaknesses. They tend to have flushed features and a ragged, filthy appearance.
Wrought: the broad class of golems, feathertops, and other intelligent automata that do not require human intervention for long-term activity. More finely crafted wrought are not distinguishable from living beings unless injured.
Yeahohs: a kind of bigfoot, dark-furred, heavily muscled, and with sharp teeth.
Miscellaneous Critters: Agropelters, Devil Dogs, (Jersey) Devil, Hodags, Snallygosters, Tailypos
