"I trust you." Adrasia said it swiftly, honestly. He gave Holland a gentle smile, nodding before he responded as if anticipating the other's disbelief. "I mean it. You have done nothing that would encourage me to do otherwise. And for those of us in this position together... would it not be better for us to trust one another? Easier?" There was something imploring in the celestial's voice. Too often he'd watched slaves turn on each other and it hurt to witness every time. What grievance could they possibly have that was force than what had been done to them? How to justify such wrath when they shared so clear a common enemy? "It's exhausting to feel such suspicion all the time -- even if it feels justified. No one can sustain that forever."

He felt... touched, oddly, by Holland's gentle thanks. It was almost a concession, after the shifter had bared so much of his soul to a near stranger. Adrasia's smile softened and he settled a bit more comfortably against the seat they shared. "It is my duty and my honor to do so. But you are welcome, nevertheless." The celestial turned his eyes back to the scenery around them, the unexpected beauty of this place that had brought suffering to so many. For a long while he was content to let the silence between them linger, a rare moment of calm relief from the constant uncertainty of the Undercroft.

Adrasia's new companion seemed like he could use a little quiet. Perhaps as much as the celestial craved it himself, all the more enriching for the comfortable presence of another. He stirred only at the signs that their time above ground was shortly coming to an end, the guards slowly making their rounds to gather the furthest drifters amongst the slaves. "How do you feel?" He asked softly, breaking the silence and tipping his head sideways to regard Holland where he sat. A few moments in the fresh air would certainly not have cured the shifter of all his woes, but Adrasia hoped a precious sliver of peace had made its way to the other still.

Holland shifted on the bench, his gaze lowering as he listened to Adrasia’s words, feeling the weight of them settle somewhere deep inside him. The celestial’s kindness was like a foreign language, strange yet oddly soothing in its tone. He fidgeted, his fingers twitching as they brushed along the stiffening hairs on his arms, the edges of his thoughts clouded with suspicion and old hurts, just as Adrasia had no doubt perceived. His eyes flickered back up when the other spoke of trust, of the right people revealing themselves, and Holland felt a mix of hope and doubt twist in his chest.

He wasn’t sure what to say at first. Kindness didn’t come often in a place like Krovs, not genuine, not without strings attached. Holland had learned to be cautious of it. But the sincerity in Adrasia’s tone chipped away at his defenses, leaving him in unfamiliar territory.

“I… appreciate that,” Holland finally said, his voice softer than usual. There was still a hesitation in his words, but something more vulnerable, too—something that wanted to believe in what Adrasia was offering. “It’s been hard to know who to trust here. It’s like… everyone’s got their own angle, their own agenda, you know? I don’t even know if I’m someone worth trusting anymore.” He felt the phantom feeling of his tail behind him, a faint wag of uncertainty, as if testing the waters of this new openness.

When Adrasia spoke of dreams, of songs, Holland’s ears perked up, his curiosity piqued despite himself. There was something almost wistful in the celestial’s voice, and Holland found himself listening more closely, drawn to the way Adrasia described a world that sounded so far removed from the grim reality they both now occupied. The mountains in the distance, the beauty and mysteries of this realm—Holland had never thought of the earth in that way before. It was just another cage to him, just bigger, with more shadows lurking in every corner.

But Adrasia’s faith, his belief that things could change… that was something Holland had nearly given up on. His eyes met Adrasia’s again, searching for something, maybe reassurance or maybe just understanding.

“Better days, huh?” Holland murmured, a faint, almost sad smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “I don’t know if I’ve ever believed in that. Not for myself, anyway.” He let out a soft, humorless chuckle, his gaze drifting towards the mountains Adrasia had gestured to. “But… I guess if you’re holding onto it for me, I can try. At least for a while.” There was a brief pause, then he added, quieter, “Thanks for not giving up on that… or on me.”

In 1609, Holland had signed a truce with its former war adversary, Spain. The truce was negotiated to last twelve years. English troops which had been stationed in Holland during that time to protect them from the Spanish were withdrawn.

Among these troops was most likely a 25 year old soldier by the name of Myles Standish, who would make acquaintance with the Separatists, and eleven years later would become their military captain, leader, and one of the most prominent citizens of the Plymouth colony.

In 1621, the truce would expire, and there was the grave possibility that Holland would again go to war with the still powerful country of Spain. It soon became apparent that the wisest thing they could do was to find a new place to live.

They had many other reasons for wanting to leave Holland as well. They were just barely making enough money to survive on, and their work was hard and tedious. They felt uncomfortable in their new cloth professions, and longed for their old profession of subsistence farming.

They realized also that the church membership was slowly passing into middle aged couple of the elders were even approaching the grand old ages of 50 and 60. Without a source of income, hyll on holland and no form of retirement, they realized they needed to come up with some new way to support themselves. Another of the major concerns to the Pilgrims was their children and future generations.

They were not necessarily looking for missionary work, to convert the natives of foreign place, but rather they wanted to start their own country with their own religious beliefs which they could pass on to their children and descendants without fear of persecution.

Around 1618, the proposition to remove to America was put forth to the general churchgoers for discussion and debate. The discussions raised many fears and doubts throughout the congregation. Some thought it was too dangerous.

Some thought that the "length of the voyage was such as the weak bodies of women and other persons worn out with age and travail could never be able to endure."

Others said that going to America could deprive them of food and clothing and that the drastic change of diet might harm them. Still others worried about the Indians, who several explorers reported were uncivilized, savage, and brutal; delighting in the torture of anyone they could capture and kill. William Bradford writes:

" It was granted the dangers were great, but not desperate. The difficulties were many, but not invincible. For though there were many of them likely, yet they were not certain.

It might be sundry of the things feared might never befall; others by provident care and the use of good means might in a great measure be prevented; and all of them, through the help of God, by fortitude and patience, might either be borne or overcome."

At long last, after much debate and serious consideration, it was finally decided upon that they would try their best to make a voyage to America. While many of their fears and worries were genuine, it is ironic to note that on the voyage the only people to die were young men; not any women or elderly, and rather than being killed by Indians or starving to death, they were helped by the Indians who taught them how to grow corn, hunt for game, and gather edible shellfish and berries.

Perhaps Holland would surprise him.

"I don't know, I rather enjoy a shifter every now and then." Not a comment that would likely calm the other man but Roland couldn't seem to help himself. There was little he would likely do that would actually put the slave at ease unless he made an effort to do so and he wasn't quite there yet. "That's right, no more excuses." The vampire confirmed and then soon they were in his suite and that clearly didn't calm the other man any. At least he wasn't completely unaware of what was supposed to happen and it didn't sound like he was entirely inexperienced so that was something and would hopefully make this all at least a little easier. "You'll have to get used to it. Little chance any of us will remove this." He flicked the collar around Holland's neck lightly before his fingers settled back on his neck again, though he'd felt and seen the way the shifter had stiffened at his touch. There seemed a strange mixture of embarrassment, shyness, and humor in the other man that intrigued Roland though perhaps the humor was just to off set everything else.

"Ca serait mieux, oui." Roland murmured his agreement, not at all bothered that they switched between French and English. The fast learners did tend to do better in the Undercroft. He smiled a little at the question, noting the uncertainty and shaking his head. "There's no rush, especially when it would be better for you to relax first." The hand on his neck slid slowly up to tangle gently in Holland's hair, his other arm sliding around his waist to hold them close together. "I have no intention of making this unpleasant for you." He dropped his voice to more of a low purr, stroking his fingers through his hair gently, almost like he was petting him. He bent his head closer and whispered the next words practically against his lips. "In fact, I intend for you to enjoy yourself." Roland closed the distance between them and kissed him slowly and almost softly. Perhaps that would calm him a little.

Holland shifted uneasily under Roland’s gaze, his discomfort evident in the slight furrowing of his brow and the stiff way he held himself. The dismissal of the laundry had done little to ease his tension, and the vampire’s proximity made the shifter shake slightly, though he tried to suppress the reaction. His heart beat faster, not just from Roland's sudden movement but from the heavy, looming sense of expectation that befell him. Shrugging at the comment about waiting around and looking pretty. "I'm not good at sitting still..." Holland's voice was soft, almost apologetic. He didn't meet Roland's eyes, instead focusing on a point somewhere past his shoulder.

Holland’s mind raced at the sudden question, looking for a way to navigate this situation without triggering something worse. There was a flicker of panic in his eyes before he swallowed it down, his smile tightening just a fraction as he glanced up at Roland. "I was told to keep my head down," he muttered, shrugging one shoulder as if that would explain everything. "Eh... shifters... not exactly the first pick for…" He trailed off, his breath catching. Get it together, he mentally chided himself, his pulse quickening with every second of silence. His mind raced, looking for a way to navigate this situation without triggering something worse. There was a flicker of panic in his eyes before he swallowed it down, his smile tightening just a fraction as he glanced up at Roland then looked to the servant.

Pale eyes followed the servant as they whisked the laundry away, leaving him empty-handed. For a moment, he blinked, almost relieved by the loss of that cumbersome basket, yet it left him feeling more exposed. He gave a soft, awkward chuckle as his fingers flexed where the basket had been. “Well, there goes my grand excuse,” he muttered, his voice barely above a whisper, though the hint of humor in it was hard to miss. With the laundry gone, the reality of the situation crept back in under Roland's touch, the sudden speed and shift disorienting him more than the words themselves. He couldn’t help but laugh nervously, the sound light and shaky, though he wasn’t quite sure why. A reflex, maybe. Or maybe he’d just gotten so good at finding something to laugh at in moments where his mind told him to panic.

"Non…" His eyes darted to the floor before glancing at Roland, not wanting to appear too intimidated, though it was hard to hide his nerves. His French accent thickened as he added, "This form though... moves different. More... clumsy?" He tried to give a smile, small but forced, the weight of the situation crawling up his spine. Inwardly, he was still adjusting to everything here—the power dynamics, the roles he was meant to play. It wasn’t like before… back in the lab or on the farm. His head swam with fragments of memory and confusion, the past blending with the present. Still, he had to make this work somehow. No other choice, right?

When Roland’s hand slid to the back of his neck, Holland stiffened slightly, the pressure sending a jolt of anxiety through him. The touch reminding him of a leash he couldn't see but could definitely feel. His gaze dropped to where Roland's hand rested, forcing a small, crooked smile as he flushed pink. His body had always reacted quickly to touch, to stimuli, but he didn’t want Roland to notice the rapid pulse under his fingertips. "Mais… je suis sûr que je vais apprendre vite," he added, shrugging as if the weight of his words wasn’t choking him a little. It was how he had learned to cope—with humor, even if it was shaky at best. "Though I’m more used to folding laundry than… this." He shifted slightly, the tension in his joints causing a subtle wince as his body fought to relax under the vampire’s hold. "Should I, eh, take my shirt off or something?" He joked, but there was an edge of genuine uncertainty in his voice now as he tried to keep up the facade.
