Dundy grabs Charlie in the hallway at some point. Smacks him on the shoulder friendly-like, then says, "Very shitty Christmas to you, kid, and a HUGELY unhappy New Year," then pulls him into a very tight hug after which he lets go and gives him his gifts.

It's a small box with a hinge, containing a medal from Dundy’s father commemorating the father on a job well done in war, given to Dundy as a reminder to do his job and do it well, a reminder that he has a legacy to uphold. With this box is a letter, written in dundy’s scrawled writing:

Merry Christmas to you, Charlie! Father gave this medal to me when I was promoted to Lieutenant, so I figured I should give it to you now, now that you are also a Lieutenant. May the strength and courage it has given me find its way to you.

Ie: stay alive motherfucker 😉 you can get through any shit life throws at you, yeah?

Tacked with the letter is a postcard with an ink drawing Dundy has done of an English port town. It feels warm, nostalgic, comforting. It is drawn, to the best of Dundy’s abilities, from his memories of home, a sequestered bay, gentle hills covered in city buildings sloping to the water below. There are so many boats in the harbor. Front and center are two bomb ketches, English flags flying. They are undoubtedly HMS Terror and HMS Erebus. There is a little rowboat being piloted away from them, towards the shore. In the sky, there are so many birds, rolling clouds, the sun shining. It feels like summer. It feels like coming home.

>Charlie is surprised by the gifts and the hug, but it’s the letter with the medal inside the little box that takes his breath away. He would never have received something like this from his own father. His brother Henry back home almost certainly has no memory of him, and depending on how this expedition goes may well end up only hearing what stories his parents choose to tell about who Charlie really is. And having been at sea for just as long as he has lived on land by this point, having never been sent so much as a single letter from any of his family despite what he sends them, he has long given up on the prospect of having this sort of happiness in any form.

He feels tears coming to his eyes and he blinks rapidly, trying to clear them, trying to hold up the casual and cheerful front he should really be maintaining today while everyone is celebrating their Christmas. But it’s too little too late, and now he’s pulling Dundy back into a tight hug and tears are streaming down his face.

a very hazbin christmas, full of joy, cheer and a party for the ages

Alastor x reader

Reader needs the perfect gift for Angel Dust but has to ask a certain someone for help. Just a little fluffy holiday special.

You would think after death the holidays wouldn't be very important. In hell, especially you would think since they're not big fans of the big guy in charge that they wouldn't celebrate a certain someone's birth. Well Charlie Morningstar was not going to let those facts ruin her super-duper fantastical holiday party.

Christmas Eve

Despite the lack of Christmas spirit Angel Dust was booked and busy letting Santa come down the chimney in a few special videos to be released the next day. Even though his stocking was being filled early you, as his best friend, were stressing over the perfect gift to get him.

Earlier in the week, Charlie has gathered everyone in the hotel to the main space where she had set up a giant tree that reached the ceiling. Charlie and her partner Vaggie, covered in pine needles and wearing lumberjack clothing, held Husk's hat full of folded slips of paper open for the circle.

"Hiiiii everyone! Hope you're all merry and ready for a fun group bonding exercise!" Charlie began.

She was met with loud groans and signs. "Shut up and listen to Charlie she put a lot of work into this," Vaggie huffed with rage.

"Thanks Vaggie. Anyways, I've set up a secret Santa for everyone to- HEAR ME OUT OKAY yes so you'll choose a name and then on Christmas we'll swap gifts and it will be so fun!" Charlie explained while passing the hat along and giggling and staring you down when she picked a piece of paper.

Since you had died quite young, your family hadn't make it to Hell yet or they made are in the place above, so you haven't celebrated since making your way to the after life, so this sounded like fun. But you couldn't resist a playful eye roll as you chose your paper reading Angel Dust to yourself.

Husk groaned while picking from his hat and then placing it on his head, "I thought through death I escaped obligatory in-law get togethers but now I have this shit."

Fast forward back to present day you were still stuck on what you could get him. Adult toys? No give him a break from work. Drugs? Not that you want to encourage that habit. Nifty had been no help when you asked. Muttering on about bad boys and cleaning. You didn't bother with asking Husk. Sir Pentious was still being coached on the whole secret Santa concept. Vaggie and Charlie had too many good ideas but none felt right for Angel Dust. This left you with only one option.

Knocking twice on the radio demon's door, your face twisted with instant regret and immediately started back down the hallway. "Leaving so soon? Now here I was thinking you saved the best for last." The gaze of his knowing smile burned the back of your head as you swiveled around.

"Sorry Alastor it was stupid idea I'll leave you to do... whatever you were doing."

"Nonsense my dear! Why I'd be happy to help my favorite guest with a gift for a certain effeminate fellow!"

"How did you-"

Alastor let out his practiced laugh, "Discretion is not one of your strengths (y/n)."

Your cheeks set alight hearing Alastor call you by your first name, no pet name or teasing nicknames. He held the door open and you avoided his gaze while leading inside. The great radio demon sauntered over to his large cherry wood desk inside his room and sat in a leather cushion maroon chair. Due to the lack of seating options, you hovered near the edge of his bed while le smiled and motioned for you to take a seat with a teasing glint in his eye.

Mustering up the courage to break the silence you asked, "I thought you didn't allow visitors inside your room."

Twiddling with his microphone cane Alastor responded, "I can make exceptions."

"I don't have any VoxTek on me by the way. Just in case you wondered."

A sound came from him, almost like a real giggle but you must of been mistaken. "I know (y/n)."

"Well since you seem to know everything what would be the perfect gift for Angel Dust that will show I'm a wonderful friend?"

"I can only give you hints, would spoil the game if I told you."

You groaned and fell back against the bed. Of course coming to Alastor was a mistake. As if an overlord would want to help silly you buy a silly gift for a silly holiday.

"Cheer up dearie! You're closer to the answer then you might think."

Eyebrows furrowed and dread he might make a fool of you, you asked him for the first hint.

"Something to do with your weekly film Friday events perhaps?"

"It's actually called freaky Friday because of our shared love of movies from the noughties." You said with a cheeky grin. "Angel also loves a dirty joke whenever it's possible to have one."

"Ah yes you, the spider ,and the swine all cuddled together in your matching pajamas on the settee watching princess makeovers and assistant makeovers and-"

"Hey it's more than just makeovers!" However, the comment gave you an idea, "Oh my god what if I get him a Fat Nuggets blanket?"

A round of applause played while Alastor called out "Ding ding! We have a winner!"

Letting out a sheepish smile and thank you, you rose from the bed ready to search for a way to get this made by the end of the day. Then a perfectly wrapped gift appeared in front of your face and dropped into your hands. Your head whipped in the direction of the smiling demon across the room.

"Is this what I think it is? How did you have it already?"

"I know you."

With a flushed face and full arms you made your way out of the room and through the doorway. Only halfway through the walk to your bedroom did you realize Alastor knew of your movie nights and took note of the matching pajamas. The radio demon noticed you.

Christmas Day

A giant fire roared in the hearth as bells rung and music played around the hotel. Excitement filled the air as the originally dismissive group exchanged gifts to each other. You and Angel Dust hung together watching the others until you announced you had something for him.

"Aw (y/n) you're my secret Santa?"

You snatched the Santa hat off Angel Dust's head in embarassment and placed it on your own as you laughed, "Had to get something for my ho ho hoe."

After a fit of giggles said spider unwrapped his gift and his eyes lit up, "If you had a dick I'd suck it so hard right now thank you doll."

Christmas was a success and you could finally breathe a sigh of relief and a laugh at your best friend's words as he snuggled himself within the blanket along with its muse in his lap.

Charlie rose up to give her gift as you prepared yourself with being thankful and happy no matter what she gave you. Until she turned to Nifty with a gift that turned out to be a new dress for her. Filled with confusion you swore to Angel that you thought Charlie got you due to her obviousness. Then the young Morningstar turned again to look above you and smiled so brightly.

Both yours and Angel Dust moved to see what she was smiling at behind you only to be face to face, or well chest, of the radio demon. Grinning down at you with his hands behind his back he laughed and said, "Happy Christmas from your secret Santa."

"What? I thought for sure it was Charlie."

"We struck a sort of deal," Alastor explained while behind your back Charlie gave a thumbs up as the rest of the crew stopped to watch.

The gift was handed to you as you carefully unwrapped it, conscious of all the eyes currently on you or rather what a scary overlord has given you as a gift. Inside was a beautifully crafted music box with carvings of your favorite flowers and sculptures of little deer in a meadow. You opened the box and your ears are met with an instrumental version of your favorite song.

"How did you-"

"Like I said I know you (y/n)."

Suddenly Charlie's voice bellowed, "Look who's under the mistletoe!" As if you couldn't be any more red from this interaction you now looked up to see that very mistletoe above you and Alastor. Your facial expression fell realizing this was going to be so awkward, being rejected in front of everyone despite it not being caused by you. Full of thoughts on how to escape or come up with a nonchalant response to not even being wanted for one measly peck and planning when you'll disappear to nurse your ego, you were distracted from the real world. That was until a pair of lips met your own in a soft yet hungry kiss. The moment felt like eternity yet also a millisecond at the same time. Before you could return the kiss, the deer demon pulled back and with a wink, walked away.

Shocked faces and silence filled the room as no one expected Alastor's actions. Lightly touching your lips, you thought maybe Christmas in Hell isn't so bad.

CHARLIE:

She takes you out for the day as soon as shes done doing what she needs for the day! As a side note I do like the idea that she would have everyone exchange cards as an exercise/activity. Everyone gets at least one card, because charlie makes a card for everyone. If you want a cheesy over the top romantic day then charlie is your go to

Vaggie:

Shes on the opposite side of the spectrum. She sees the holiday as any other; but she does still make an effort to get you SOMETHING. Probably a card and a basket of snacks she knows you like. If you insist on doing something with her, it'll be movies! Going out or staying in, either works for her

Angel dust:

He'd be lying if he said you getting him something didnt make him feel some type of way. Sure he already gets a lot of stuff sent in. I mean hes an icon, he has fans. But most things they send in have.. a vibe... whereas you did it because you genuinely care. He doesnt want to stay in, you two go out and hang around clubs and parties! Generally you both have a blast, you come home in the early hours of the morning

Random Holiday Headcanons

Happy Holidays y’all! Some holiday head canons just because... 💙🤍💚❤️

Patrick

Patrick is canonically Jewish.

In my head his grandparents are more religious and give them Hanukkah gifts and when they visit the family celebrates somewhat formally.

Among his immediate family though I imagine it’s mostly his dad leading their observance of Hanukkah traditions.

Growing up he spent quite a few Christmas holidays at Arts house in New England and likes how traditional they are. Even though he teases him about how over the top it is.

Stanford age!Patrick celebrates Christmas socially. He goes to parties and events and sometimes gives gifts to his friends/partners.

Okay Dilf!Patrick is super into winter activities. He likes to go to the mountains and go sledding with the kids. He’s an okay snowboarder but often bites off more than he can chew and ends up spending more time sitting on the side of the mountain than actually snowboarding.

He’s not big into decorating but he does like to share Hanukkah traditions with the kids even if he was never that into them growing up. Especially if his sister and her family is visiting.

He’ll fry latkes and light the menorah. He likes blending the holidays and making it feel unique and special.

The kids love it because they get more gifts before and after Christmas depending on when the holiday falls.

The kids also love when Patrick tells them the Hanukkah story and the meaning behind the oil lamp burning for 8 days.

Tashi

For Stanford!Tashi the holidays are all about being with family.

Thanksgiving is always in South Carolina where her grandma(dad’s mom) lives. All her dad’s siblings (he has four) and their families show up there. Cook together… watch football and the cousins hang out which she loves because there’s a big group of them that are around her same age.

Thanksgiving night they go for a walk around her grandma’s neighborhood if the weather is mild.

For Christmas she goes to Long Island, New York to see her grandparents (mom’s side).

They have a holiday party every year on Christmas Eve with various relatives who live in and around New York (and her grandparents also invite people who are in town or may have no family to spend Christmas with).

Everyone opens their gifts together Christmas morning and the younger cousins play together. It’s less fun for Tashi because she’s the oldest. But she doesn’t mind hanging out and watching after her brothers and her little cousins.

She loves watching the Charlie Brown Christmas specials and it’s a wonderful life on Christmas Eve.

On Christmas they play board games. They’re all really competitive and monopoly is a dangerous game to pull out.

Older!Tashi can get kinda Pinteresty about decorating.

When she had her daughter she just wanted to build new traditions and those traditions generally involve traveling because of Arts career.

I imagine they visit Switzerland for Christmas time with her mom’s family as a stop off before going to Australia for the open.

They stay in cozy lodges and decorate. And light the fireplace. She likes to read the night before Christmas book she heard when she was growing up.

They visit Christmas markets and do all the snowy winter activities.

She’s a skier and is judgmental of Patrick’s tendency to just sit on the mountain most of the day (like me to snowboarders because that can’t be fun).

Art

Arts family was very into the holidays growing up

The entire house was decorated. They actually listen to Christmas music on purpose.

They wear Christmas pajamas all day. Drink cocoa and watch Christmas movies together.

His grandma would go above and beyond to make it special for him and his sisters. Making sure they built gingerbread houses and played in the snow. And that they all got tons of gifts. When they were young his grandma would make his dad sneak the gifts in on Christmas Eve at a crazy hour to make it seem like Santa came.

His tradition was him and his sisters would bring their sleeping bags in the living room and fall asleep by the tree. His oldest sister always got the couch and him and his middle sister had to sleep on the floor.

They did it well into their 20s when they were all home together. And did it with his first nephew when his oldest sister got married.

He still thinks the whole thing is magical.

Older!Art is probably the most holiday pilled (when he’s not depressed).

He over does it with the Christmas decorations. Tashi rolls her eyes like “there doesn’t need to be Christmas lights in the bathroom Art.”

He makes them carve pumpkins at Halloween and makes them build gingerbread houses on Christmas.

Lily loves it.

He helps Lily bake sugar cookies and chocolate chip cookies on Christmas Eve. And leaves them with a note for Santa and a glass of milk.

Then he dresses as Santa in the middle of the night to sneak presents under the tree while Lily is asleep. He does it no matter where they are in the world.

Later when Patrick finds out he plays Santa baby on repeat Christmas Eve morning.

Art wants to play Christmas music all the time but Tashi draws the line there unless it’s jazz or instrumental. She can’t listen to the same lyrics over and over all season.

Art is a skier but he took snowboarding lessons with Patrick and spent most of the day sitting on the mountain.

likes to plan activities, create memories. would just plan, like, a whole day from start to finish to try and get as close to their perfect day as he could.

usually goes for something classy, but with a nod to sentimentality – just a little hint so that they can’t be totally sure if it’s just coincidence. also loves extravagant travel-based gifts – surprise trips and weekends away and stuff.

atticus

hates gift giving, generally just like texts them a few weeks before like “hey what do you want for your birthday” and if they say nothing then he’ll just spend days like GOD what does THAT mean and eventually just get them something very middle of the road in the hope that it both is a gift (if they were lying and actually Did want one) or a non-gift (if they were telling the truth and really didn't want anything).

generally just goes for a single good quality item that she knows they need, but is still kind of a fancy indulgence? like a really nice perfume/cologne if she knows they’re running low, or like nice new shoes or w/e. if she’s really into someone she’d like cook them a fancy dinner and plan a nice evening – when she does for something that’s taken time, you know she’s really in it.

would get them a few, smaller things that are based on inside jokes or things that had come up in conversation before – often ridiculous and kitsch and totally useless haha. also totally the sort of person who would supplement his gifting with handmade coupons (i.e. redeem this coupon to burn one (1) item from my wardrobe etc)

ellis

it’s hard to say how ellis would approach gifting, because i think it’d be so personal to whoever they were with? they’d certainly put A Lot of thought into it and what was important to their SO and then try to get/do something that they’d really cherish. ellis also argues fiercely that the card is the best part of any gift, so they love writing a nice, long message in a card haha

florrie

goes really all out for birthdays. gift giving is really important to florrie – it’s an opportunity for her to pour all of her love and care for a person and everything that she knows about them and try to show them how she feels. goes way over the top, if anything.

griffin

doesn’t go super hard on birthdays and he’ll probably forget until the last minute and then be like OH FUCK as he’s driving home the night before or whatever. expect pretty cliched gift-based items, definitely no card, but he’ll probably think of something fun and spontaneous to do that covers him.

imogen

looks out for the perfect thing, like, all year round that she can pick up and save for a birthday/gift-giving holiday. expect something vintage and unique and incredibly thoughtful – i just always imagine imogen as the sort of gift giver where the other person unwraps it and does that little gasp that people do when they’ve just been really caught by surprise by the thoughtfulness of a gift?

remembers all the things that they have wanted to do over the year and she shot down and then picks her favourites to actually do as a fun lil surprise birthday date. her parents also send gifts if they approve of her SO, so there’s that too.

definitely errs more on the side of experience-based gifting, but would totally get them a little something silly to open in the morning and make them a special breakfast in bed. she’d also definitely make them wear a party hat and/or badge all day and probably also get them a dumb thomas the tank engine card that plays a song when they open it.

Todd Anderson:

He always enjoys reading by the window, cuddled up in a blanket with a cup of hot cocoa, and just reading his favourite novels.

Even if it isn’t very “christmassy,” he enjoys making time for himself at the beginning of the winter break.

Eventually, he does start to miss his friends, but that’s what the books are there for. They make a very good distraction.

Sometimes he makes cookies for his friends, too. Cookies are always nice.

Neil Perry:

This man loves all the music and winter performances.

He will go watch the nutcracker, he will explore the town just to hear christmas buskers, jingle bells, and the sound of citizens shouting “happy holidays!”

He is also the type to be standing by a piano singing any carol he recognizes. He can’t help that he’s such a sucker for the classics.

Always enjoys spending time with the poets, his true family. It heals his inner child from all that he never got to experience.

Always gives gifts. A L W A Y S.

Charlie Dalton:

He’s the one to come up with/bring all the games. He loves playing games and getting all competitive with everybody.

Always ends up getting too cocky and losing everything at least once in a game. It’s always funny to everybody else but him.

Makes bets that he can never repay. Every year it gets harder and harder to convince him.

Accuses anybody beating him that they’re cheating. Just the Charlie way out of things.

Steven Meeks:

Loves decorating for the holidays. Paper chains, trees, lights, you name it. He’s usually always put in charge by his family for at least something to do with decorating.

Makes heartfelt cards for all of his best friends, and always make sure they all look different and exactly to his vision.

Usually the first one to show up at a dead poets festive gathering. He doesn’t want to miss any of the action!

If Neal isn’t the first to compliment Todd’s amazing cookies, Meeks is. It’s probably one of the main things he’s excited for every holiday now.

Gerard Pitts:

He’s a big fan of any holiday movie. Ones that make him laugh, cry, sometimes cringe, he doesn’t really care.

He just enjoys sitting down with others, all snuggled up and spending quality time in each other’s presence by watching a movie.

His favourite is either It’s a Wonderful Life or any holiday movie under the comedy umbrella.

He can never get his friends to fully shut up during the movie, so eventually he just joins them in making comments during the movie. It can get really fun sometimes.

Knox Overstreet:

He usually can’t pick a favourite thing to do. There’s always so much, and his choice changes every year!

He just enjoys the holiday in general. He wouldn’t trade the time he gets to spend with his friends for the world, and all the laughs that get exchanged all in one night.

One of his top things is definitely how Charlie always gets his ass handed to him during games.

Richard Cameron:

He adores all of the music. How people can make such diverse, but similar covers of the classics will never get old for him.

If Neal sings by the piano, he’s the one playing it.

He keeps a special binder full of holiday music that he keeps tucked away for this very occasion every year.

He’s always found humming the tunes while a holiday movie is on. This causes him to get poked fun of quite a bit, but he just can’t help it.

The Countdown Is On!

I can't believe that there is only TWO more days until Christmas! This month. this year has just flown by! I can't lie 2022 has been a turd of a year and I am happy that it is almost at an end.

While I am looking forward to the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023, I can't let the holiday come and go without another top 5 list to get you in a festive mood.

Today I am going to deck your halls with my top 5 Christmas specials! Long before streaming services and physical media, specials like A Charlie Brown Christmas could only be viewed once a year, unless "taped" off of TV during the broadcast.

Shows like this were an event. No matter what you were doing you made sure that you were bathed, in front of the TV, snack in hand, and ready when it came on. I miss those days, simpler times indeed.

Enough reminiscing, on to the list!

5. A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)

A Charlie Brown Christmas is definitely one of my favorite holiday offerings. A very relatable tale especially growing up Catholic and having participated in several Christmas pageants showcasing the Nativity story. I still volunteer for our church's live nativity :)

4. Frosty the Snowman (1969)

Ah... Frosty the Snowman, not only when this was airing did it mean Christmas was not too far off, but also painted a great picture of how that first snow made you feel as a kid. Snow always did seem like a magical event back then. It sparked imagination and creativity in your outdoor play, and it also had the ability to give you a day off from school! Today I could take or leave snow, mostly leave, but watching Frosty on wintry day with a hot cup of coffee or hot chocolate, wrapped in a blanket and on the couch, you can easily be transported back in time.

3. A Claymation Christmas Celebration (1987)

A Claymation Christmas Celebration was extra special because it was, at the time a brand-new Christmas special. If you look at the previous entries on this list, they all predated me. The Claymation Christmas was riding on the success that the California Raisins stop motion animation advertisements were having. Classic Christmas carols were showcased such as "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" being performed by the California Raisins and a comical bell-choir performance of "Carol of the Bells." In between the performances the dinosaur hosts Rex and Herb go back and forth on the appropriate title and lyrics to "Here We Come A-Wassailing."

The show's creator Will Vinton had released similar specials that predate this one, but I was never aware of them until I got the DVD that included A Claymation Christmas Celebration and the other holiday themed shorts.

If you have never seen this, I highly recommend seeking it out.

2. Christmas Eve on Sesame Street (1978)

I shared a brief post about this special earlier, but Christmas Eve on Sesame Street was one of my favorites and holds a special place in my heart.

I don't recall this being on every year or catching it when it was on but the memories around this are what have it in my number two spot.

I remember one Christmas eve when I was too little to go to the evening Mass and I was home with my mom. I just remember watching this while she got things ready for the company that we would have over later that night. The two stand out memories for me were when Cookie Monster trying to write a last-minute letter to Santa eats his pencil and then later tries to call but eats the phone and near the end seeing the snow fall on Big Bird as he tries to wait up for Santa and falls asleep. I always felt bad for Big Bird because Oscar was a jerk to him.

It wouldn't be until many years later where I bought the DVD and re-watched for the first time in a long time.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964)

For years, at least in my mind, this was the big-time event. Christmas was here! With commercial breaks included Rudolph was an hour-long event. All other specials were just a half-hour so you knew this was special, and it was and still is today.

Rudolph was always very relatable as I think at some point in every child's life the sometimes feel like a "misfit." In the end however, the misfittiest of them all proves to be the most useful and is tasked with leading.

And there you have it, another list in the books. With so many good specials from the past, it was hard to pick my top five, but I did it and have no regrets!
