#holden crewman
Hey there, good luck this week!
Do you have any interesting things about the Holden Crewman? I have the '07 model and very rarely see other ones on the road, after years of driving a 2-door Getz it's like I'm driving a bus lol. Here's a pic of the cool back, take care!
Tumblr media
Oh my, a ute! We get to tell the rest of the world about them!
Utes (from the "utility" in "utility vehicle") are passenger cars that just so happen to have a truck bed behind the people - providing both the comfort and refinement of a regular car and the versatility of a pickup, with huge advantages in fuel consumption, noise / vibration / harshness (NVH) and speed - you can haul ass while hauling donkeys! (Don't haul ass while hauling donkeys.)
The name wasn't familiar to me, as someone a bit out of tune with the Australian market's largely isolated automotive ecosystem, and now that I check that's even less of a surprise - my man, you've the last year of the only four-door ute Holden's ever made! Considering its production spanned five model years, I'm not surprised it's that rare -had it been more requested it would probably have seen itself through to the end of Holden (R.I.P.)- and likely would've appeared sooner in their lineup.
If you want me to say more, well, all I have is a call to action: Apparently a yankee fit one of these with the bits from the Pontiac GTO (the name they got the Monaro by) - LS included.
Tumblr media
Voices say that's the only such ute in the world - and it surprises and saddens me that you're letting yankees beat your nation at its own game. Go out there, scout the nearby wreckers, there's bound to be some Monaro with a fauna-remodeled rear. You know what to do.
Links in blue are posts of mine explaining the words in question - if you liked this post, you might like those!
Thanks for the well wishes, by the way - all is going fine! :)

Most people have a very bad habit of classifying large chunks of people in binary terms as either all “bad” or all “good.” But the reality is that there is ALWAYS a mix of good and bad people, as well as good and bad IN people. In The Expanse, many viewers have taken the side of the Belters. Some, because they love certain characters, like Naomi and Miller. Others, because as a class, the Belters are the clear underdogs. Generally, they risk life and limb for rich corporate owners who apparently couldn’t care less about them, either individually or as a group. Fans of Earthers tend to like Holden or, really, Avasarala. They have exposed their imperfections, as well. Amos is a fascinating Earther, beloved and feared all at once.  Martian fans like Alex, or more recently, Bobbie. The Mars faction is a little less developed than the Earther or Belter factions in terms of quantities of deep characters or back stories (so far). This episode really digs into the issue of the risk of thinking of a group as all “good” or “bad,” especially if you unequivocally favor Belters.
The recap begins here:
The scene opens on a field and a person who is tending a crop. A little girl waves goodbye to the tender, who is her father. An alert sounds, and the pieces of the destroyed mirror come crashing through the domes protecting the crops from Ganymede’s nonexistent atmosphere. The scientist wakes up among quite a lot of injured people, and immediately he checks on his precious cargo. The injured man is on a Ganymede refugee ship, which is headed to Tycho. A surly Belter hands out supplies, as the man frantically looks for his child, who is not on this ship. Doris (Grace Lynn Kung), another refugee – indistinguishable from any of the OTHER refugees, greets Dr. Praxidike Meng (Terry Chen). It’s clear that Doris saved Prax’s life. Prax is distraught that his daughter, Mei, is not just missing, but feared dead.
On Tycho, Holden (Steven Strait) and Johnson (Chad Coleman) question Diogo (Andrew Rotilio), who clearly views Johnson as non-Belter. Staz (Alden Adair) tries to interfere, but he is held off by Naomi (Dominique Tipper). Diogo says that Johnson should go back to Earth, that Dawes will be the Fist of the Belters. Alex (Cas Anvar) had suggested that Naomi take out someone and Naomi told him that he doesn’t get to decide who she kills. They take Diogo off to a holding cell.
Drummer (Cara Gee) shows Holden and Johnson system information that shows how Dawes escaped and that someone overrode security. Drummer is in charge of security, so there’s a serious question about what happened. They receive an incoming communication from Dawes (Jared Harris). It’s clear that Dawes was the person who sheltered and sponsored Johnson. Dawes feels that Johnson is acting as an Earther, not a Belter and that they have to take drastic action. He tells Johnson he has stolen his secret and is giving it to the Belt.
Doris and Prax discuss their future and what to do. They note that the Belter crewman doesn’t seem to like to be a good Samaritan. Doris wants Prax to come with her to Mars.
Johnson, Drummer, Naomi and Holden discuss that they have more information than Dawes does, and they disclose that Cortazar was aware that there was more Protomolecule than what was destroyed and it was after Eros was destroyed. Drummer volunteers to help Naomi obtain direct access to the antenna so she can collect and analyze the data Cortazar had obtained. There is a degree of concern over Drummer’s loyalty because she is security (which was breached) and she’s facilitating access to the antenna. Naomi goes to check on the sample that she knows wasn’t destroyed. Holden tells Naomi that he’s sorry he didn’t tell her about the existence of more Protomolecule. She’s frustrated and leaves Holden behind.
Alex catches up with Amos (Wes Chatham), who looks like 5 miles of bad road. Alex asks Amos for help and he says “no,” which shocks Alex.
Dawes’ message is being played to Belters, which incites them.
On the refugee ship, the crappy Samaritan tells the passengers that all the Inners are being transferred to ships to take them back home. Prax decides to go with them, but the Samaritan says he can’t, it is for Inners only. Doris says she can stay, but Prax encourages her to go. They say goodbye through the airlock window, and to Prax’s (and the entire viewership’s) horror, the Inners are spaced. The Belter Samaritan tells Prax that Inners destroyed Ganymede and that he’s lucky he’s a Belter. One technical note. The Expanse is remarkably faithful to what happens in space. Doris suffocates and freezes, rather than exploding.
Drummer explains that Fred has always had the Belters’ best interests at heart and Naomi gets Drummer to explain her background. Drummer worked with Dawes and Dawes rescued Johnson from drinking himself to death after the Anderson Station incident. Drummer says Dawes has a unique view of the Belter situation. They get the data and discover that there is Protomolecule on Ganymede Station. (Viewers who have read the books will note that the sequence involving Prax and Ganymede is not the same as it is handled in the book, but it is faithful to the concept of what was covered.)
Johnson, Holden, Naomi and Drummer discuss what it means that the Protomolecule exists on Ganymede. It was aware when hostilities broke out between Earth and Mars, and it learns.
Prax’s refugee ship arrives, and a crewman advises they will be ID checked and cleared, and he indicates on his handheld that an algorithm is being bypassed.
Prax desperately tries to convince a medic of what happened on the refugee ship, but he doesn’t know the name of the ship. She tells him she knows it was wrong but, without further info, she can’t do anything, to be glad he survived and maybe he’ll know some other refugee.
Holden and Naomi try to figure out who on Ganymede was involved with Protomolecule. They narrow the list of people who were on Ganymede and have the appropriate qualifications and Strickland (Ted Atherton) is identified. They query who was connected to him, and Prax and Mei show up, because Mei (Leah Jung) was a patient of Strickland. Prax is on the station, but Mei’s whereabouts are unknown.
There are a huge amount of people on Tycho, and it’s straining the station. A group of Belters, led by Staz, invade the command room, intent upon deploying the nukes to Earth.
Prax adds Mei’s picture to the wall of the missing. Holden and Naomi see and grab Prax. Prax panics, thinking that they think he knows about the spacing, but they, of course, think that he is involved with Protomolecule. Naomi (FOOLISHLY!!) opens up his container, but it’s just a soy bean.
The Belters who invaded the command deck, kill a crew member and then shoot Drummer, because they won’t give them the launch codes.
Amos is using the system to search for Lydia Maalouf. This is the lady he mentioned when he spoke with Cortazar about his guilt. Alex catches up with Amos and is trying to figure out what his problem is. He says Amos only cares about himself (Amos amusingly notes isn’t that everyone’s problem if we’re being honest?) Alex provokes Amos, and Amos attacks Alex, coming close to killing him, and Alex openly wonders what happened to him! They both notice that the nukes are being accessed.
Prax tells Naomi and Holden about Mei and her health needs. Naomi and Holden figure out the Strickland nexus is really Mei. Naomi notes that Prax should have access to Mei’s monitor feed, and answers “no” when asked if she had any children. Prax accesses the feed on her handheld and sees that Strickland took Mei out of the clinic before the attack. They know that Strickland knew the battle was coming and went to get Mei. Alex calls Holden to tell him about the nuke problem.
Fred tells Staz that Earth will shoot down the missiles and then destroy Tycho. Staz is fine with that because then Tycho will be fuel for the revolution. Amos, suited up, heads outside the station. Holden tells Amos that Naomi has almost overridden the air controls. Amos is there to remotely access the air system. He cuts the oxygen and although Staz tries to kill Fred and Drummer, Fred knocks the gun away and they all pass out.
Alex and Holden burst in to help the folks in the control room. Fred says “Drummer first,” because they are besties. Alex helps Drummer out and as they go by Staz, she yanks Alex’s gun and shoots Staz and the other turncoat crewman right between the eyes, and then stumps off. She’s the very definition of badass.
Amos settles Prax into his quarters and ensures he has mag boots. He explains that Prax is a guide, not a guest. And, he says that looking for Prax’s daughter is a good thing. His encounter with Amos leaves Alex to think about his family and what he has done for them.
Naomi asks Jim why he went to Cortazar’s quarters and Jim says he went to kill him. Naomi says that isn’t who Jim is. Jim says he needs Naomi to help him to get himself back when this is all done, and they kiss. Jim has to go to get Fred Johnson’s permission to leave. Fred wants any Protomolecule sample brought back to him, but Jim refuses. Fred says if they don’t, then don’t come back – no free anything. Jim is not sure Fred will still be in charge when he gets back. Fair point. Jim says Fred’s not a part of it anymore, and Fred releases them.
Grade: A
This was a completely packed episode. Although they were always evident, the fault lines between the Belters and the Earthers have deepened to an unsustainable level. It’s provoking the very worst behavior, and every time people do their worst, it just causes terrible repercussions. This episode made quite a few Belters look extremely bad. The Belter on the refugee ship spacing completely innocent people, and the Belters who are willing to send nuclear missiles to blast Earth (despite the fact that there are BILLIONS of innocent people there, as well) honestly represent the worst of humanity. Personalizing the impact of awful actions makes everyone realize the consequences, but it doesn’t seem to be enough to stop people from behaving dreadfully. This episode had room for personal development, as well, as we see Amos still working through his issues resulting from interacting with kids and just how close he is to being out of control. The episode ratcheted up the tension by continuing to provide so many indicators that Drummer was the traitor, only to have her satisfyingly vindicated.
The effects continue to be stunning, as even the lowly refugee ship looks gorgeous. The handhelds are entirely believable and all the displays look crisp and clean. It’s such a pleasure to see such attention to detail, up to and including the poor dying and dead spaced Inners.
Next episode: “The Weeping Somnambulist” airs on Wednesday, March 22 at 10 pm on Syfy.
The Expanse (S02E08) “Pyre” Most people have a very bad habit of classifying large chunks of people in binary terms as either all "bad" or all "good." But the reality is that there is ALWAYS a mix of good and bad people, as well as good and bad IN people.

A Stable Orbit - the Expanse Fic
Characters: Bobbie Draper, Alex Kamal Book Spoilers: minimal, but this is set post-Babylon's Ashes Rating: Teen (do I ever not curse when I write?) Words: 1027 Ao3 Link: http://archiveofourown.org/works/9234962 (please go like or comment because it makes my day!)
Thanks for the prompt @clarissa-melpomene-mao! She chose “simple kindnesses” from that alphabet meme i posted last week.
Also today is @maedhros-nelyafinwe‘s wedding day! Hope it’s glorious and you are too busy to read this!! Hope your marriage is as comforting and fulfilling as this slice of life here, but also waaaaay more passionate (if you’re into that sort of thing).
Finally, sorry shippers, I couldn’t help but add one more piece to my headcanon of Bobbie and Alex having a deep platonic intimacy. Hopefully it still makes you feel squee without any romance.
Full text below the cut:
Bobbie suppresses a yawn against her fist and looks down at the clock again. 05:42; all the other creatures on the Roci just might be starting to stir. She bounces up in the low thrust gravity of the ship’s unhurried pace; this mission isn’t likely to be dangerous so she feels okay about leaving her post for a few minutes.
She corrects herself. “Job,” not mission. It’s still taking Bobbie a while to adjust to being part of a civilian crew. Especially since the Rocinante’s slick interior just screams Martian Navy. All the visual cues are still telling her to stand at attention, keep her uniform neat, wait for orders. The crew of the Rocinante, while not exactly sloppy, didn’t really operate at military-level standards of discipline.
The problem with the watches, for example. Bobbie had been slightly horrified to learn that the four of them quite often did not bother to keep someone on the command deck at all times, especially during the off-cycle shift that would have put one crewman out of sync with the rest of the group. Bobbie had badgered Holden about it until he let her set up a schedule. She wasn’t going to rest during any hours she knew no one was on watch anyway, so she had taken the unpopular graveyard shift.
Alex is up next after her. He likes to spend most of his day cycle at the pilot’s station anyway, checking projections and making subtle adjustments to their course. Fiddling around with his one true love, a lady called Rocinante. But what Alex doesn’t like is waking up any earlier than he has to. At fifteen minutes before he’s due on the command deck, he’s usually still rolling around in his crash couch. And so at this time Bobbie’s been finding herself ducking down to the galley and doing some of the things he won’t leave himself time for.
One of Bobbie’s greatest delights about the Roci is that its galley still makes all the MCRN rations. They even used the same names and numbers for the MREs as the Marine Corps. She and Alex had had plenty of excited discussion over the virtues of the number 15 (half slab of musaman ribs), or the versatility of the cornbread naan side (which came with almost everything). Real Martian food, that had tasted like home to her since basic training. For Bobbie, dining on the Roci had the emotional glow of Mom’s kitchen, and Alex sharing that history made him feel like some long-lost member of her extended family.
And for breakfast, Alex Kamal prefers the number 7: biscuits and gravy, or “good ol’ b’s and g’s” as he calls them. Bobbie had pulled a face when he first brought this up; she had always found that one barely tolerable even when she drowned it in hot sauce. But then Alex showed her his secret: order up the spicy chutney side out of MRE #22 and pour it over the whole thing. She was skeptical, but from the first bite she was hooked.
Bobbie orders up two platters of the ‘Alex special’ and fills two bulbs while she waits for them to come out; coffee for Alex and an herbal tea for herself. She’s planning to try and get a little shut-eye after she and her fellow Martian share the meal that has become their daily custom.
Bobbie has just settled back into her crash couch, starting to pick at the hot food in her tray, when she hears Alex pulling himself up the ladder. “Mornin’, sunshine,” he greets her as he steps on deck.
“How’d you sleep?” Bobbie asks, though she knows the answer is always the same.
“Just fine,” Alex replies as he steps up behind her and starts rubbing her shoulders. He knows she has a bad habit of hunching over monitors, and by the end of her shift she often has a nasty crick in her neck. Within seconds his thumb has found the exact spot. Bobbie rolls her head against his pressure, sighs in relief when she actually feels the knot release this time. “Thanks, podna.” She had started using the nickname on him to tease him for his Mariner Valley drawl, but now the word comes out of her mouth as naturally as it does his.
Alex grabs his food and sits across from her, toasting her in silent appreciation with his coffee bulb. He used to tell her “not to trouble herself” and “don’t make a fuss,” but by now he is resigned to his fate: Bobbie Draper is going to be making him breakfast. She can tell by his smile that he actually loves the gesture.
When they’re finished and Alex settles down at his station on the pilot’s deck she follows him, itching to fix the bedhead she’s been staring at all through the meal. She runs her fingers through his hair absentmindedly for a moment, then works to make into something a bit more presentable. He should probably get it cut soon.
Bobbie figures they probably touch each other more than most friends that aren’t romantically involved, but she also figures it’s really nobody’s business but theirs. Alex has told her that both Holden and Naomi had separately approached him, fishing for information on his and Bobbie’s relationship status. Bobbie was sure she didn’t give one shit what they thought. Then she corrected herself. As Captain and XO it certainly was their business to monitor any fraternization amongst the crew.
Well anyway, it wasn’t what they thought. Alex’s lifestyle had set him into a pretty solidly confirmed bachelor status, and Bobbie figured as long as she stayed on this tiny crew, it was the same for her. So they met needs for each other that most people reserved for romantic partners, needs for affection, for touch, for someone to care about. It wasn’t a sexual thing; they had come to that crossroads a while back and moved right on through. They had settled into a stable orbit, revolving around each other. It wasn’t something anyone needed to make a big deal over, or even acknowledge.
It was just home.

Variations on a theme: Part 10 Holden VZ/WL, 2004. The hard-working Holden V-body Commodore spawned 6 versions not counting concepts or 4-wheel-drive variants. In addition to the the multiple trim levels available in saloon and long wheelbase station wagon versions, the wagon was also sold as an Adventra 4x4 crossover. There was the Monaro coupé though the convertible version never made it into production. The were 2 and 4-door utes also available with 4-wheel-drive as well as one-ton versions and the SST Stepside concept. The Expanse has been renewed for a third season
Syfy announced today that it has picked up The Expanse for a third, 13-episode season, which will air on the network in 2018.
Based on the series of novels by James S.A. Corey, The Expanse is set two centuries from now in an inhabited solar system. The show follows a spaceship crewman, James Holden, and a detective on Ceres, Joe Miller, who become intertwined in a system-wide conspiracy that brings everyone to the brink of war.
The second season of the show is currently airing on Syfy, and has depicted a solar system that is ethnically divided between Earth, Mars, and the asteroid belt. With this as its basis, the show is one of the most politically relevant science fiction stories out there.
“The Expanse is a gorgeous, thrilling, emotional series that has quite simply raised the bar for science fiction on television,” Chris McCumber, president of entertainment networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, said in a statement. “We, along with the fans, are looking forward to continuing the journey with our partners at Alcon Television Group and the series’ brilliant cast and crew.”
“It's a real pleasure to be able to work with this team some more,” said author and writer on the showDaniel Abraham. “We've been talking with Naren Shankar, Mark Furgis and Hawk Otsby about the shape of the story in the third season, and it's amazing. I want to see just it, like *now*. It's going to be a great ride.”
viewers of ‘the expanse’ aren’t necessarily watching the show live — but they are tuning in through other channels
The pickup is welcome news for fans of the show. While The Expanse has been praised by critics and attracted a core group of fans, it has earned lower ratings. However, many viewers have been watching the show in a variety of ways, according to Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, who wrote the novels and who are producers on the show, when they spoke with The Verge last year at New York Comic Con, something that NBC-Universal is keenly aware of. "Their game plan is to build a good show and something that's widely available, and then believe the fan base will come," Abraham explained at the time.
The first season and the first handful of episodes of season 2 adapted the first novel in the series, Leviathan Wakes, while the remainder of the second season has been adapting the next book in the series, Caliban’s War. Depending on how much of the novel is adapted in the current season, season 3 will likely tackle the events of the third novel, Abaddon’s Gate. The sixth installment of the novel series, Babylon’s Ashes, was published last December.

Am I the Captain? - the Expanse Fic
This was one of my first fics for the fandom, and I was too shy to post it then because it was so smutty. I have since... changed my tune on being coy around here, obviously. Holdemos feels are blowing around today so I thought I’d finally post it *cough - @clarissa-melpomene-mao - cough*
Pairing: Holden x Amos Rating: Explicit, NSFW Words: 2507 Ao3 Link: http://archiveofourown.org/works/7335148 (Comments/kudos give me LIFE)
Summary: Post Episode 7. Holden doesn’t know what to do about Amos’s continued insubordination. How could he win the guy over? True to form, Holden blurts out a proposition without thinking it through.
Excerpt:
It was still going to be several days before the Rocinante reached the mysterious asteroid, where they hoped to rescue this Lionel Polansky, whoever that turned out to be. After their near miss with the Martian boarding skiff, everyone was taking a little time just to regroup before the next crisis. Captain Jim Holden found that most of his thoughts kept turning back to his out-of-control crewman, Amos Burton. The guy had been ready to flat out murder two Martian soldiers the moment they set foot on his ship; no negotiations, no bargaining, no prisoners. He had stuck to that plan even with a gun to his head. Holden couldn’t let that kind of thing stand, not on his crew. Either Amos recognized his authority from now on, or he was going to be left behind when they got to that cold little rock.
Not that Holden wanted it to come to that. He had worked with Amos on the Cant for years, and had always liked the guy. He kept his distance, and Amos was a pretty unapproachable person, but Holden had a real affection for the taciturn mechanic. Until all the drama he had been putting them through recently, which was tarnishing that positive regard fast.
But their crew was tiny; they needed him, and Holden was still holding out hope he could get through to Amos.
“Ok, we need to figure this out,” Holden opened, walking into the armory where Amos had been sullenly cleaning the guns for the past few hours.
“What’s that,” the big man said without looking up.
“Are you a part of this crew?”
“I’m here, ain’t I?”
Holden blew out a frustrated sigh. “Yes. You are. You could have stayed on Tycho, on Fred Johnson’s dime, waiting to testify. But you walked back on my ship. My ship--”
“Is it?” Amos cut him off.
“What, you think you’re cut out for command?” Holden challenged.
“Nah,” Amos said. Holden waited for him to elaborate, but he just kept on working, wiping little pieces of gun with an oily rag. The exasperated captain sat down across from him, sighing as he tried to figure out what to say next. He found himself admiring the twitches of Amos’ biceps as he worked. He didn’t have feelings for men very often, but Holden could admit he was very attracted to the man before him. He just couldn’t figure out how to get along with him. Amos was the kind of guy that clearly wanted someone else to be in charge, just ask Naomi. But something seemed to be holding him back from accepting Holden’s authority in particular. How could he win this guy over?
Staring at the man who had been the cause of so many strong and complicated feelings lately, an idea occurred to Holden that felt brilliant. And terrifying. And really, really hot. He was pretty sure the rumor mill on the Cant had told him Amos went both ways too. “We just need to get past this. Would it make you feel any better if I let you fuck me?”
Amos looked up sharply, but didn’t say anything, so Holden kept explaining himself. “You know, we could blow off a little steam. And then you could just let it go, and let me be the captain?”
Naomi’s boots rang at the top of the ladder as the two men stared at each other. “Amos, are you down there?” she called. “I could really use some help with this.”
“Yeah, boss, comin’ right up,” Amos answered her, unreadable eyes never leaving Holden’s face until he walked past him.
Shit.
