this was my first THAUC event and i'm so happy i decided to join in on the fun ✿ working with Molly was a delight!! the ideas we were brainstorming early on inspired me immensely, so much so that i did more sketches of our modern AU's version of Thorin, Bilbo, Dis and the boys haha! i'll share those over the coming weeks.

Been a while since I last made a fic rec list, and I recently went through all the newer bagginshield works on AO3, so I wanted to share some of my favourites! These are all amazing, please go give them a read if you haven't already! 💛 These are all completed, but if anyone is interested I might also do a list of incomplete works in progress that I'm feral about as well!
~
"Green-Handed" by lotusOkid Post-BotFA, while Thorin, Fili, and Kili are slowly recovering from their wounds, Bilbo finds himself subject to a condition that hobbits might experience at a few very particular times in their lives, under very particular circumstances, none of which apply to him. Very confused (and somewhat embarrassed) he decides to keep it a secret during this delicate time in the mountain. This goes about as well as you might expect.
~
"The Burden of Choice" by @fantasyinallforms Thorin Oakenshield is the crown prince of one of the strongest kingdoms in Middle Earth, but in the last year, the kingdom has struggled to keep its place among the ruling powers of Middle Earth. Erebor was held under vicious siege by the dragon Smaug, who terrorised the land and wiped out the nearby human settlement of Dale. The hardship forces Erebor into a difficult position, creating no other choice but for King Thror to seek alliances with other kingdoms and races through the bonds of marriage. Will Thorin see this as his duty to his kingdom or take another path entirely?
~
"No Grave Can Hold My Body Down" by @chaoticangel666 Bilbo returns to The Shire after the Battle of the Five Armies. He might be going insane though, because why does the ghost of Thorin Oakenshield keep showing up when he least expects it? Follows the events from the end of The Hobbit until the end of The Lord of the Rings.
~
"Handsome Stranger" by kriegswaffel A handsome stranger arrives at Hobbiton, both reminding and distracting Bilbo Baggins from the upcoming negotiations between a Dwarven Envoy all the way from Erebor and the official-inoffical leadership of the Shire regarding trade. As he gets more wrapped up in matters, can he find something true and lasting with someone so different - and maybe entirely different from what he expected? Or will he get his heart broken again, at long last, having hoped where there was no hope, or even only betrayal?
~
"What's In A Name" by broken_pencils A short scene that takes place post-canon, in which Bilbo and Thorin discuss the uniquely hobbit custom of family surnames. ~ "And Watch Them Grown" by @sunnyrosewritesstuff Thorin survives his battle to find Bilbo laying unconscious in the snow. Unable to carry him down, Thorin leaves him with his ring on to get help. Only he doesn’t make it very far before collapsing. Waking in the healing tents, Thorin comes to realize no one made it back up to save Bilbo! ~ "The Kitchen Thief" by @mordellestories There are pests. At first, Thorin thought one of his assistants was stealing from him. And that may have been why he was a bit harsher on them than what was deemed necessary. But one by one, the workers were replaced only for the goods to keep vanishing into thin air. It was driving him to madness. And when Thorin wasn’t at peace, everyone knew it. So, it had to be pests, right? Pixies, brownies, rats, something was pilfering his hard work and it was happening more often as time went by. ~ "The things you see in the market." by GothicMama Krelven just wants to explore the market on his day off. But instead he gets thrown for multiple loops when he sees two extremely familiar faces.

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Bagginshield...
Tumblr media
The Bagginshield Book Club (BBC) server just hosted its very first Midwinter Gift Exchange! This was an amazing event that sparked so many beautiful, creative works. If you're looking for great holiday entertainment this season, our theme was "Winter Fun" and these projects absolutely delivered!
Here's previews of just SOME of the amazing works you can find in our AO3 collection:
Labamrazûkh'azghu by @sunnyrosewritesstuff As Erebor starts to receive its winter snows, the company seems interested in participating in this labamrazûkh'azghu. Bilbo assumed it was a type of snowball fight. He's about to find out, like most things the dwarves do, it's a little more intense than that.
When a monster becomes a beloved mutt by @lucigoo Bilbo finds a stray warg pup and of course he falls in love with it, much to Thorin's dismay. Thorin hates the little monste,r but he loves his husband, even if he doesnt understand why he wants to keep it for a pet. A word that has no Kuzdhul equvelent. The things he does for his hobbit, his husband, his consort *sigh*
high time by @northerntrash Some people fall in love over the holidays. Other people take longer. A year in the life of entirely platonic roommates.
Raising a Sprout by @shujinkomononobe Time has passed, and a miracle has unfolded in the heart of Erebor. Bilbo Baggins, once a humble hobbit and now the beloved consort of Azsâlul’abad, is expecting a child. As the dwobbit (dwarf-hobbit hybrid) grows within Bilbo, questions swirl: How will this unique child be raised? What challenges will come with its dual heritage? Join Bilbo, Thorin, and their companions as they navigate the joys and uncertainties of parenthood in a kingdom where the unexpected is always around the corner.
Go take a look at these spectacular projects and all the others! And remember to please leave a comment appreciating these amazing creators.
Happy Hobbit Holidays!

“How do I—! How do I know!” Bilbo echoed, bristling with exasperation. “I journeyed all the way across Middle Earth, through forests and over the hills, crossed the Misty Mountains and the Great Greenwood through to the ruins of the great City of Dale and further still to Erebor, fighting goblins and orcs and giant spiders and a whole blasted war, then did the whole thing again in reverse, and you have the gall to ask me how I know!”
There was a beat of total silence. “Well, it was a reasonable question,” said Fortinbras, stung.
Bilbo drew in a long breath through his nose and gave an almighty huff. “Mark my words. All of you,” he said, pointing a finger at all the gathered faces, his voice tight with the desperation to be taken seriously. The dwarves would have listened. They would’ve had his back. “You must evacuate Hobbiton. Take only what you need to survive, and run. Go east. Forget your handkerchiefs and hang the silver spoons. Anyone who stays here, will die.”
“Now, Bilbo…”
He held up a hand to his cousin’s face. “No. No, don’t. You’ll see. Take my advice or don’t, you’ll see,” he said, casting a fearful glance at the smoke billowing from the ruins of the first raid. It was the pebble before the avalanche, and there were already more, thinner trails of smoke joining the larger one. A lump formed in his throat. They were already coming. He gave one last, loud proclamation to the crowd. “Flee on the east road. Tell anyone, everyone — we have no choice.”
—Excerpt from There Is One They Could Follow (One They Could Call Thain) by Oakensting (WorseOmens) on ao3
Basically, Bilbo pulls a Thorin Oakenshield and leads his people from the orc-ravaged Shire to safety. Meanwhile in Erebor, Thorin refuses to believe Bilbo is dead.
Sadly, i think this fic was deleted. I mourned it more than some family members.
*staggers into the room Kramer-style covered in water, soot, glitter, and slivers of paper from the waste bin of a paper shredder like confetti* So, guess who just watched the lotr trilogy for the first time despite being a fan of the Hobbit for a literal decade! Also the last two (three?) months have sucked ass and I’m exhausted, so buckle up.
Anyway, this is one of my comfort fics, I love it so much. Everything from the Pining(TM) to the blatant parallels between the dwarves and hobbits.
Things I loved in particular:
Gandalf the White Ox
Kíli taking one look at Thorin and being like “oh I know exactly what’s going on here”
Hamfast and Drogo
Petty Thorin
Seriously, he’s so petty I love it
Bard just being like “yeah, that’s pretty much how I was when I lost my wife
The r e u n i o n
“you’re like a hobbit king!” “my title is thain, actually” *incredulous staring*
splash fight<3
The acorn speech<3<3<3
The “New Polite”
Dwobbit debate
read it or the ulnas are mine <3

Fic Recs For Getting Over Writers' Block:
To me, the only way to get over the writing horrors™️ is to read some good fucking prose. Even if the summary of these fics doesn't appeal to you, I'd suggest reading them purely for their tactile prose that somehow gets the brain working again.
General Block Breakers:
Magpie by yellowmustard
Skirts and Barbells by @petrichorca
Malleability by jazzxdaffy
The Nest That Hope Builds by @red-sky-in-mourning
Grounded by @forpiratereasons

Adventures of a Leggy Blonde by @palavapeite

Tolkien Webcomic Recommendations!
I know people here follow me for my webcomic adaptation of the Hobbit. So I thought Id share recommendations for my favorite similar Tolkien comic projects, in case people are looking for other Tolkien webcomics to read! :D
My recs will be mainly Tolkien comics that adapt portions of the original books, just with their own unique spin on them.
1. Sam and Frodo Comics, by Molly Knox Ostertag
Tumblr media
Ostertag is probably the most well known artist on this list! She is a professional graphic novel artist who does gorgeous adaptations of scenes from Lord of the Rings, read through a queer lens, in order to tell the story of Frodo and Sam’s love for each other. This is mixed in with comics based on her own Tolkien-inspired writing. I’m focusing on comics in this rec list, but I’ll add that Ostertag has also written a lot of engaging prose fanfic with illustrations.
“Sam and Frodo Comics”
“In All the Ways There Were” (illustrated prose fanfic adaptation)
2.Lord of the Rings Book Canon Comics, by @yambits
Tumblr media
Yambits does beautiful adaptations of scenes from the original lord of the rings books that do not appear in the New Line Cinema films, hewing very close to the original prose, and focusing on the love between Frodo and Sam. I especially love the way they depict the magical temptation of the Ring.
“Ithilien,” an adaptation of Frodo & Sam’s encounter with Faramir
“In the Lair,” an adaptation of Sam & Frodo journeying together into Shelob’s lair
“The Tower,” an adaptation of Sam journeying to the tower of Cirith Ungol to rescue Frodo
“Escape from the Tower,” an adaptation of Sam and Frodo leaving Cirith Ungol to journey into Mordor
The Ringbearers, a comic about the One Ring reflecting on the resilience of hobbits
3. Sansukh the Webcomic, by @fishfingersandscarves and @determamfidd
Tumblr media
Sansukh is a well-loved Bagginshield fanfiction that is now getting a webcomic adaptation co-created by the original author. The premise is that after his death, Thorin Oakenshield is not able to speak to his surviving loved ones, but can influence them in subtle ways; he uses this power to help inspire Gimli to join the Fellowship of the Ring and protect Bilbo’s nephew. From there the fic becomes an “adaptation” of Lord of the Rings, retelling the trilogy through its new lens until the very end.
This is a bit of an outlier on this list because it’s an adaptation of a fanfic that’s an adaptation of the books, rather than an adaptation of the book. However, if you’re into the Hobbit fandom/Bagginshield, I recommend checking it out! It’s also one of the few comics on this list that is currently updating. :)
@sansukhcomic (tumblr blog)
Chapter one
Original fanfic the comic is based on
4. The Ainulindalae from the Silmarillion, by Evan Palmer Comics
Tumblr media Tumblr media
People who know me, know that I’m *usually* not a big Silmarillion person. However!
Comic artist Evan Palmer did a gorgeous adaptation of the Ainulindale. This section of the Silmarillion describes the elven myth of creation, the ancient years where the world was created through a divine magical song. Palmer’s Fantasia-inspired expressive watercolor art really helps bring this section of the story to life!
Full comic
5.The 1989 Hobbit Comic adaptation, by Chuck Dixon and David T Wenzel
Tumblr media
This is another outlier because it’s a physical comic book, rather than a webcomic- and unlike all the other recs this is an “official” adaptation produced by an actual publishing company rather than a zero-budget work made by an indie creator working alone/with a partner. I’m unsure if it can be found online.
It’s an adaptation of the Hobbit that hews extremely close to the original book, making practically no changes at all. It has very gorgeous watercolor illustrations! ( It’s been a big inspiration for me on my own little comic adaptation of the hobbit shsjd.) This is also the only comic on the list I’ll offer critique of, because it’s the only one made by an actual company with a budget— so I’ll say that because of page limits imposed on the comic many of the pages can feel overcrowded with prose, and emotional beats/comedy beats sometimes aren’t given the time to properly land. At times it feels less like a comic adaptation and more like reading the original prose of the Hobbit accompanied by some very beautiful illustrations. But if that’s what you’re into it’s great!
It’s a fun well-illustrated read that I recommend. I’m not sure where people can find copies; I stumbled across it in my library, so they’re definitely still around.
If anyone has additional tolkien comic recommendations, especially ones that can be found easily online, feel free to add them to this list! : D

"he sighed as the contact was made. their breaths mingled in the cold air..." Backs to the Wall by @conkers-theficwriter
text from "posing in bondage" by japanese breakfast
i've wanted to use this song in a piece for a while (especially when i read this description by Michelle which screams bagginshield haha!) so when i read chapter 10 of BTTW and the song came up at The Right Moment, the imagery of the fic and the song melding together in my head?? i had to do something with it! please read Backs to the Wall, it's amazing! ♡

hey, I saw your take on soft Bilbo and wanted to know which Bagginshield fics you'd recommend? My best friend got me into The Hobbit, and I need their romance!
one of us! One of us!
I'd be glad to give you my recommendations! I've only read a couple so far, but honestly they're awesome first reads! Esp if you also struggle with remembering the company members names as much as me:') all of these are on Ao3 and post-BOFTA (everyone lives in these fics)
The first one I recommend is "Green-Handed" by @lotus0kid ! It was the first fanfic I read and it absolutely blew me away! It's about Bilbo's hobbit powers coming in for "no reason" and way too strong, it's sweet sweet slowburn as well, if you're into that:)
I've also learned I'm a huge sucker for cultural misunderstandings, it's probably something I picked up from Spirk lmao, but here's a couple that I loved:
•The Color Of Possibility - northern trash
•You Got Me - drunkonwriting
•To Feel You Like A Knife - queerofdagger (this one is super angsty but so so good)
And a couple that are specifically about hair! Hair, is super important in dwarvish culture so ofc I love the trope that Bilbo does a heinous act on his hair without realizing lol (tho, they do imply and talk about s/h, if you'r not comfortable with that, that's okay.)
•Splitting Hairs - orphan_account
•A Hairy Misunderstanding - amethystviolist
and one I'm reading right now is "An Unexpected Addition" by Karategal. It's about Bilbo going back to the Shire after taking back Erebor to sort out his affairs before officially moving, and he pickes up and adopts Frodo along the way. I'm not usually into fics that talk about lotr or Frodo because I haven't watched it yet and don't want to be spoiled, but this one is absolutely adorable so far, but be fairly warned- lots of gore, for some reason.
I hope you like these recs, my friend!! I really enjoyed reading these and they've endeared me further into these characters!

If you could only read one fanfic for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
Can’t be done 😂 There’s no way I can only pick one! That’s crazy talk!
This is my bare minimum rec list:
“A Most Unlikely Dance Partner” by fantasyinallforms / “A Long List of Happy Endings” by vicious_summer / “A Passion For Mushrooms” by Chrononautical / “A Glittering Abyss” by Salvia_G / “Guardian of Kings” by SunnyRose / “An Expected Journey” by MarieJacquelyn / “Something To Start With” by MulaSaWala & storyforsomeone / “Dragonhearted” by mithrilhearts / “Theft” by Erinye / “The Riven Crown” by BeautifulFiction / “The Road Delivered Us Home” by Keelywolfe / “Safe and Distant” by Lindzzz
…one fic, they ask 🥲 ONE?? I could never! (Too spoilt, lol)
Thanks for the lovely question! 💛
