My boy Hop being super subtle about his feelings for Shane 😂
Lore drop vvvv
Hop is the father of my Stardew farmer, Quill. He's the child character in Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life. I played HMAWL a LOT as a kid, so as I play SDV as an adult, it only felt right to tie them together this way 🥹
Hop is Nami's son from AWL, which means Grandpa in SDV is the farmer in AWL!
Being that he's Nami's son, he loves metalworking art and travelling. Eventually he entered the military and lost his leg in the war. He was absent a lot in Quill's early childhood, but settled down after some Plot Happened. In addition to his metalworking art, he also runs a mechanic shop.

harvest moon: another wonderful life is soooo different from every other harvest moon game. while there is still a bit of magic here and there, it makes a concentrated effort to be realistic in the farming systems, in ways that go completely against EVERYTHING in every other game.
instead of generic tiers like "copper watering can, silver watering can, gold watering can", the tools you start out with are simply "heavy", probably because they belonged to your father. instead of slapping metal ores on those old tools, you mail order a new tool entirely. what's even wilder (considering harvest moon's traditions at least) is that animals have two sexes! instead of buying a "miracle potion", you have to buy a bull/rooster if you want to make more animals. oh, and cows don't give milk unless they've given birth. the farm feels reasonable, like it's trying to follow real-life rules.

Are there any media – games, books, movies, music etc. – that you loved as a child, that you can say shaped who you are as an adult?
Hard mode: you can't pick "Kingdom Hearts".
I was raised by my nan - I'd spend every single day helping her out around her house, working in her garden, cooking together, doing my homework, and then sitting with her and playing games; I would play and she would watch. For the most part it was N64-Gamecube era games. Things like Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, Wind Waker, and Sonic Adventure 2s Chao Garden were favourites for both of us, games that were chill and comfy and laid back, bright and colourful but had a nice sense of responsibility and progression. I remember very fondly the way that my nan would always like how the horses hooves sounded in HM:AWL and even though you said that I can't pick KH, she was the one who got me KH2 and watched me explore through it countless times. Banjo-Kazooie, Pokemon Snap, and Ocarina Of Time were also played a lot, and I hold them all very close to my heart haha. I still very much enjoy games designed to be relaxing, I love me some farm sims and I tend to get attached to specific characters regardless of their original media.
In terms of books, I am a big fan of Junji Ito's work, I have quite a few graphic novels and a collection of books, and growing up I was a very avid reader in general. I have a signed autograph from Micheal Morpurgo somewhere from when I was very young. I don't read as much as I used to to be honest, especially fiction, but that's because I spend so much time writing that I worry a lot about accidentally absorbing other people's ideas or words and stuff through reading :p Ito's structure and overarching sense of scale are super interesting to me and I really love how detailed and foreboding his work always is - and that despite being one of the biggest horror mangakas of all time he's actually just a sweet and chill little catdad guy lmaoooo
my taste in music and movies is so jacked, dude. I have the most bizarre sense of taste imaginable. I love terrible awful movies. I'm a big fan of monster movies, quite a lot of foreign films, shlocky action lmao; I have a degree in animation and enjoy a lot of art movies and character studies. I did my third year dissertation in how body horror in media is portrayed differently depending on its country of origin and I have a lot of passion for movies in general, I love discussing practical vs special effects, exploring background details and plot contingencies, character motivations etc. I do weekly movie nights with my chat and its my fave time of the week! I've always liked weird movies and I always end up going back to my faves

Actually I'm gonna list the things I would include bc why not:
Overall
I enjoy some difficulty in my farming simulators, so SOS:AWL, which I've been playing recently, has felt a little lacking to me (it's still fun and enjoyable, but it's hard to fuck up, at least so far). Ideally my game would be playable at a casual level but you would strongly benefit from careful planning and strategy. For this I would look to early HM games; HM:AWL and HM:DS come to mind for me. HM:MM is simpler/easier in my opinion, as are the Wii iterations.
Since I've been playing SOS:AWL lately I'm picturing the game in that style, but I think it would work in either 2D or 3D.
Stardew Valley isn't technically related to HM/SOS but it takes a creative approach to many parts of the farming sim genre and is absolutely worth looking toward for inspiration.
Plotline
I like the idea of collecting Sprites or Wonders, and a high number (88, 101) appeals to me. Personally I would prefer sprites, a la HM:DS/Cute. The purpose would probably be waking up the Harvest Goddess but I'm open to creative changes. I would also include the Witch Princess or a similar "villain" character to introduce a negative route, again like HM:DS.
Crop hybridization (AWL) is really fun and I would want to incorporate it, either by including Vinnie or another method, possibly another maker or piece of equipment (Vinnie would be more fun lol).
Farming/Ranching
You can walk through crops, which is something that always annoyed me about HM:DS. Leveling by layering seeds is good, but I'd also be open to other methods of leveling crops. Undecided whether one seed pack = 1 crop or = 3×3 plot of crops.
Crops could either be graded (S, A, B, C, D) or leveled, I don't think they should be both because it would get too complicated.
I would love to have a large variety of animals, both coop and barn. You would also get a horse and other pet options. Maybe you would be able to ride other livestock animals, as in HM:AP.
Mining
I don't have any solid ideas about mining, the two options I guess would be a journey mine (HM:DS, Stardew Valley) or a dig-site mine (AWL). A journey mine would be better for a special marriage candidate.
Fishing
Okay, so. I love video game fishing. If a game has a fishing mechanic I will be fishing. A lot. Any game. Harvest Moon, Final Fantasy, Monster Hunter, Animal Crossing. I will spend hours and hours waiting for the little exclamation point and reeling in fish. The options here are whether or not to incorporate a mini-game, like Stardew Valley, or just have wait and watch fishing. I enjoy the SV mini-game but usually when I talk to other fans they mention a strong dislike for it. And obviously I'm a fan of wait and watch fishing, but I also like the added difficulty of a mini-game. This is a hard one.
Cooking
Unlockable recipes for sure, some hidden around, some only attainable through high friendship. The TV show from SV is a fantastic idea. I also think having cookbooks available could be nice, they would include some base recipes, but again some recipes can only be unlocked by leveling up or special events.
Marriage
Firstly, I love the idea of special marriage candidates like Keira, Leia, the Witch Princess, and Skye. I would also like to have the Harvest Goddess and God as marriage canadiates, which would also serve as a perfectionist route.
I would want every candidate to have a matching rival, including the special candidates.
To propose you need 10 hearts and see all heart events. There would be no time limit, but if you spend too long in town and become good enough friends with the candidate and your rival, they will get married.
Once you get married, maybe there will be a time skip? Or something so that all couples can have children.
I also have some more complicated ideas, involving sexual preference and polyamory, where either each character would have a set preference for both or there would be toggles to customize gameplay, so you could make your favourite candidates find you acceptable (lol), or randomize all candidate preferences. This would make the rival mechanic difficult so it would probably be tossed in that case.
Children
I would really love for the children to age and eventually help out on the farm. I would also want their likes and dislikes to be randomized.
Gifting
One thing I don't like about SOS:AWL is that you can't give someone a gift they wouldn't like, which sounds kind of mean when I write it out, but it adds to the difficulty of making friends, and also gives you an option to lower friendship if necessary (a rival's level is too high, for example).
Buildings/Upgrades
I like for there to be an option to gather materials and pay less for upgrades, but it can become tedious, so there would have to be a good balance. SV does this well in my opinion.
Etc.
I would want to write a manual with a spoiler-free guide up front and an extensive walkthrough after, including marriage candidates' likes and dislikes, schedule, and time and location of heart events.
That's all I can think of for now, but I'm gonna save a copy of this post in case I want to add to it.
Every time i get back into harvest moon/story of seasons i think about how i would direct a game in the series, it would just be all my favourite mechanics and i dont know if anyone else would find it fun sggeekdjhd

Hop Barnes, the farmer's single dad, is a ray of sunshine. He rolls with the punches, he looks for the silver lining, he does a third grossly overused, pithy expression to describe someone who lets others take advantage of him. Hop entered the air force because he wanted to travel, but was discharged after losing his leg. Now he runs a mechanic shop in Zuzu and spends much of his time on Midmorning Farm helping his kid, Quill, out.
He's the dad character sending letters to his AFAB child in Stardew Valley, but he's also the potential child character of the farmer and Nami in Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life!
