My boy Hop being super subtle about his feelings for Shane 😂
Lore drop vvvv
Hop is the father of my Stardew farmer, Quill. He's the child character in Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life. I played HMAWL a LOT as a kid, so as I play SDV as an adult, it only felt right to tie them together this way 🥹
Hop is Nami's son from AWL, which means Grandpa in SDV is the farmer in AWL!
Being that he's Nami's son, he loves metalworking art and travelling. Eventually he entered the military and lost his leg in the war. He was absent a lot in Quill's early childhood, but settled down after some Plot Happened. In addition to his metalworking art, he also runs a mechanic shop.

harvest moon: another wonderful life is soooo different from every other harvest moon game. while there is still a bit of magic here and there, it makes a concentrated effort to be realistic in the farming systems, in ways that go completely against EVERYTHING in every other game.
instead of generic tiers like "copper watering can, silver watering can, gold watering can", the tools you start out with are simply "heavy", probably because they belonged to your father. instead of slapping metal ores on those old tools, you mail order a new tool entirely. what's even wilder (considering harvest moon's traditions at least) is that animals have two sexes! instead of buying a "miracle potion", you have to buy a bull/rooster if you want to make more animals. oh, and cows don't give milk unless they've given birth. the farm feels reasonable, like it's trying to follow real-life rules.

youtube recommended to me a color-coordinated ACNH island video to watch and now i’m violently tempted to just... do a rainbow island
#ive restarted twice and barely done anything either time#i just. struggle with hard themed islands#my first one was meant to be e.lpis and greco-roman inspired. but i gave myself choice paralysis#and this one i'm on is meant to be HM:AWL based. i have villagers picked out and everything#but i struggle with like. feeling. derivative.#bc one of my online acquaintances already did that and i feel like i'm copying#but i AM rainbow. i COULD do rainbow island. it'd be Me#(or i could do my secondary idea and just go full fucking pink bc. i can)

BOKUJOU FANS. apart from the visuals and new marriage candidates, is story of seasons: a wonderful life appreciably different to hm:awl on the gamecube from a gameplay standpoint? (or hm:ds i guess?)
some questions:
is there considerable quality of life improvement? (menu navigation/ui design esp for storage, rigid calendar system instead of the weird thing where you constantly wake up while sleeping?)
does the middle crop still always die before you upgrade your watering can?
is marriage still required year 1?
is there still only one goat that suddenly stops producing milk with no way to get it back? on that note, do cows still require breeding to keep producing and does the barn have a larger or upgradeable capacity?
can you open the shed?
does the game still have a rigid ending point, or does it work like the ps2 release where you can still access your save after beating it?
#mine#bokujou monogatari#harvest moon#story of seasons#tagging these bc idt my followers are super into life sims

Are there any media – games, books, movies, music etc. – that you loved as a child, that you can say shaped who you are as an adult?
Hard mode: you can't pick "Kingdom Hearts".
I was raised by my nan - I'd spend every single day helping her out around her house, working in her garden, cooking together, doing my homework, and then sitting with her and playing games; I would play and she would watch. For the most part it was N64-Gamecube era games. Things like Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, Wind Waker, and Sonic Adventure 2s Chao Garden were favourites for both of us, games that were chill and comfy and laid back, bright and colourful but had a nice sense of responsibility and progression. I remember very fondly the way that my nan would always like how the horses hooves sounded in HM:AWL and even though you said that I can't pick KH, she was the one who got me KH2 and watched me explore through it countless times. Banjo-Kazooie, Pokemon Snap, and Ocarina Of Time were also played a lot, and I hold them all very close to my heart haha. I still very much enjoy games designed to be relaxing, I love me some farm sims and I tend to get attached to specific characters regardless of their original media.
In terms of books, I am a big fan of Junji Ito's work, I have quite a few graphic novels and a collection of books, and growing up I was a very avid reader in general. I have a signed autograph from Micheal Morpurgo somewhere from when I was very young. I don't read as much as I used to to be honest, especially fiction, but that's because I spend so much time writing that I worry a lot about accidentally absorbing other people's ideas or words and stuff through reading :p Ito's structure and overarching sense of scale are super interesting to me and I really love how detailed and foreboding his work always is - and that despite being one of the biggest horror mangakas of all time he's actually just a sweet and chill little catdad guy lmaoooo
my taste in music and movies is so jacked, dude. I have the most bizarre sense of taste imaginable. I love terrible awful movies. I'm a big fan of monster movies, quite a lot of foreign films, shlocky action lmao; I have a degree in animation and enjoy a lot of art movies and character studies. I did my third year dissertation in how body horror in media is portrayed differently depending on its country of origin and I have a lot of passion for movies in general, I love discussing practical vs special effects, exploring background details and plot contingencies, character motivations etc. I do weekly movie nights with my chat and its my fave time of the week! I've always liked weird movies and I always end up going back to my faves

Pfft, that was fast 😉 Thank you for the ask custard 🤗
🐾 - Favorite pet in the series?
The one that jumps to my mind first is the cat from AWL
I especially love this little one because there's a bit of a story for how your farmer gets them. It makes it feel more personal and meaningful to me, than the later games where you could just buy any pet you wanted.
I even remember what I named this cat in my very first playthrough of HM:AWL - I called them "Minty", and I'm planning on reusing that name for the cat in the remake in honour of the original 😅
☘ - Which game was the most fun in your opinion?
HM:MFoMT.
While other games in the series have better visuals, storyline and even mechanics, FoMT kept me coming back to replay it over and over again.
I can't tell you how happy I was when I first learnt about the remake and discovered I could play my favourite title all over again ♥️
Thank you for the asks!

🍄🍍🍊!
🍍 my favorite art style from all the games would be either Animal Parade or Story of Seasons!! mainly bc I’m a sucker for warm colors :’) gameplay wise, I love the art direction of HM:AWL, it gives a nostalgia that cant be beat
🍊 o man if I could choose just ONE thing, it would be heavy improvement of relationships with NPCs!! I mean beyond just events. I’d want to be able to eat with villagers, have enhanced dialogue based on your relationship with them, have their dialogue be constantly changing like in RF4, being able to confide your worries and having them offer to help you out…I could go on forever tbh. I also had this idea of bachelors/bachelorettes confessing to you, even if you’re not actively pursuing them!!

Hop Barnes, the farmer's single dad, is a ray of sunshine. He rolls with the punches, he looks for the silver lining, he does a third grossly overused, pithy expression to describe someone who lets others take advantage of him. Hop entered the air force because he wanted to travel, but was discharged after losing his leg. Now he runs a mechanic shop in Zuzu and spends much of his time on Midmorning Farm helping his kid, Quill, out.
He's the dad character sending letters to his AFAB child in Stardew Valley, but he's also the potential child character of the farmer and Nami in Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life!
