In today's new Longreads essay, Elizabeth Friend examines the vanishing hitchhiker tale, and one spooky North Carolina story in particular: the tale of a young woman named Lydia.
There are countless variations on Lydia’s story. Sometimes her dress is a specific color. Sometimes a different family member opens the door. Sometimes the young man drapes his jacket over the girl’s shoulders, only to find it later on her grave.
Elizabeth explores how folklore passed down over generations reveals our anxieties during times of change. The ghost story of Lydia reflects the shifting expectations of American women in the first half of the 20th century.

Since "The Benny Hill Show" was a show that was on in the late 1970's and early 1980's and used to parody current pop culture at the time like "The A Team" and "Charlie's Angels", Benny Hill should've parodied "Three's Company" on his show.
Or even "Man About the House"--a British sitcom that was the inspiration for "Three's Company".

I got to be a plot device in someone else's story today. As I was on my way out of the Sault to Wawa, I saw a woman hitchhiking with a sign saying she was going to White River. I picked her up since Wawa is about halfway there, and I didn't want her falling prey to some creep. Turns out she's an addict in recovery, escaping Chattham (Murder City) to meet her boyfriend (who cut her down 5 years ago when she tried to hang herself) in British Columbia. I don't necessarily have to be in Michipicoten til tomorrow, and I have relatives in White River with spare room for me to stay overnight, so I took her to White River. She planned to hitchhike from the gas station, but I asked my uncle if she could crash on his couch for the night and start fresh tomorrow. Having secured a place to sleep, she went to buy a fishing pole from the neighbour's and secured herself a ride with two teenagers and their grandpa all the way to Kamloops! I feel pretty good that me picking her up when I did got her a straight shot to BC so we don't have to worry about her getting trafficked in Thunder Bay or something.

Furcation's Guide
Ponk Energy: While the best drink in the universe is the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster- the drink defined for its ability to speedrun one through the many stages of drunkedness, hangover, inevitable decline, sobriety, rebound and then moving on and forgetting about the sodding drink. It's widely well known that many companies would simply seek to create their own rather than using the similar level of Quantum Fermentology to cure world hunger or finally giving a conclusive answer to a much debated subject on woodchucking woodchucks. Ponk energy was the result of such endeavours, created by two ferrets after one was instructed to create a drink of the colour, having mistyped it due to having small paws. The resulting drink has been described by the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as 'Unquestionably Ponk'- and when asked what Ponk actually means, the guide immediately tells you a list of the universes greatest Philosophers, how to contact them, and a list of equally renowned Therapists and Rehabilitation centers for after you two would have loosened up. - Piece made for Furcation 2023, based on the Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy and the Ponk Meme from various furcations. Frankie taking a swig of the infamous drink and Clive describing the situation very succinctly.

"SUSPECTS ARE RELEASED," Montreal Gazette. June 1, 1933. Page 4. ---- Youths Believed to Be Wandering Montreal Boys ---- (Special to The Gazette.) St. Jerome, May 31. - Two suspicious youths found loitering near the local railway station at five o'clock last night, and at first believed to be the two bandits who are being sought in connection with the St. Jovite bank hold-up, were arrested and taken to the local police station by Chief R. Latour. They were questioned and spoke little English, and the police stated, refused to give much information about themselves. Chief Latour communicated with the provincial police and Detective Merineau arrived here and questioned them.
This morning at 10.30 orders were received from the provincial police by Chief Latour to release the pair. The descriptions of the lads did not correspond with that of the two gunmen. When arrested the men were exhausted and said that they had come from Mont Laurier and were on their way to Montreal. The pair were first seen by M. Lapointe who called the police. They were between 19 and 23 years of age.
The Gazette learned that, according to the description, the two men, arrested and later released in St. Jerome, Que., when they were at first thought to be the two St. Jovite bank bandits, are believed to be Roger Laurin, 16 years of age, of 4586 Fabre street, and Jean Paul Gauvin, 18 years of age, of 5820 Second avenue, Rosemount, who disappeared from their homes on Monday last.
Upon learning that the two had been arrested and finding that the description corresponded with that of her missing son, Mrs. Laurin telephoned Chief Latour and asked him to detain them until she went for them yesterday morning. By the time that the call reached the police of St. Jerome the two youths had already been released.
Last night Mrs. Laurin left Montreal in an automobile in search of the pair. She hoped to pick them up somewhere along the highway between Montreal and St. Jerome.
