Divisional Rounds
I think it's so weird we questioned the Eagles and the Vikings earlier this season when they bot got off to some really good starts. The vikings sure, they were super inconsistent and won close games beating much weaker opponents they should have dominated. The Eagles however, should have never been in question. A lot of talking heads said the Eagles might have been paper tigers because of their ease of schedule at that point, and that they hadn't really been tested. I mean sure you can say that at that point in the season they hadn't faced the toughest opponents, but they were dominant and easily out classed lesser teams. This is of course in stark contrast to the Vikings and even the Cowboys who were known to lay a few eggs this season against weaker opponents. Not saying they lost but they would often played down to their opponents level, this was remedied by their almost comically easy win over the Buccaneers. The eagles today came out and utterly dismantled the Giants who seemed to be on a hot streak. Tonight the Eagles proved without a doubt ( as if they hadn't done that already ) that they are the team to beat if you want to make it to the Superbowl.
The Jaguars are going to be a problem next year... I hope, because the way they played the Chiefs today was surprising. The Jaguars were so close to being back in that game and maybe going into overtime that actually thought they could win that game for a second. The soul crushers were Jamal Agnew's phantom fumble and Trevor Lawrence's pick at the end when he took a shot and floated the ball. Had Agnew not dropped the ball before any defenders even touched him they likely would have scored on that drive. The Chiefs got the ball back after that and the Jaguars got a stop and received the punt. Then just when they were marching down the field, Trevor Lawrence is hit as he throws and sails the ball smh. The chiefs get the pick and the rest is history. I pray this team will be back in the playoffs next year, they absolutely deserve it. Doug Pederson's turn around of this team in just one year has been astronomical, they went from a 4 win team the previous year to a legit playoff team worthy of respect. Well fucking done Duval

Football Vs. Husband: Which Do You Know Better? | Zimbits ft. Tater, G, 1.8k
Summary: Bitty gets quizzed on two of his favourite things: Jack and...... football?
Based on the Buzzfeed video of the same name. Takes place sometime in Sept-Oct 2019. Minor spoilers for 4.25 Faber and 4.26 Check, Please! (If you can call em spoilers LOL.)
Read on Ao3
A/N: Fun fact: At the time I wrote this (2017), it was set in the “future” (2019), but now that year is literally the past for us hahahahahahskfjasldfjasldfjklaskdfj. In the fic summary I say “minor spoilers” because what I originally wrote as wish fulfillment in 2017 became canon in 2020.
Anyway, this is a near verbatim copy of Ned Fulmer getting quizzed on his wife vs football—like fr some of the dialogue is exactly the same LOL. Thanks to @smol0ctopus for the beta and the omg stream! please server for advice!<3 Any other mistakes are mine.
YouTube transcript of Football Vs. Husband (Check, Please! #151: A Falconers Special!) [Descriptive captions by biittyyreciipees, airhockeycanbeviolent, and f4lcsboy: Check, Please! Captioning Team]
Eric Hey, y’all! Didja miss me? Because I sure did miss you! Now, today’s video is a lil special. Y’all’ll see that I’ve got myself some lovely guests here from Providence’s own Falconers team. (gestures towards Jack and Tater) Say hi guys!
Tater (waves) Hi!
Jack (single nod, smiles) Hello.
Eric I’ve got here regular guest and my husband, Jack Zimermann, and his teammate, Alexei Mashkov—
Tater But you call me Tater!
Eric (laughs) But we call him Tater! Tater, why don’t you explain what’ll happen here today?
Tater Is collaboration with Falcs TV! We had special tournament to see if players knows their SOAPs more than favorite thing.
ONSCREEN CAPTION SOAPs = Significant Others And Partners, for all y’all non-hockey fans out there! Click here (highlighted annotation inserted) to watch the tournament on the Falconer’s official website or check this video’s description!
Eric I had me such a great time over on Falcs TV with Jack that I wanted to share the fun with y’all here!
Tater (nods) Zimmboni crush everyone in tournament!
ONSCREEN CAPTION “Zimmboni” is Jack’s hockey nickname, like “Tater” is for Alexei. Everyone on the team has one! In fact, I have one too: Bitty! But Alexei likes to call me “B”.
Jack (shrugs, gives small smile) I know history. I know my husband.
Eric (laughs, blushes)
Tater Now, is time to see if B know Zimmboni just as much!
Eric I’m feelin’ pretty confident that I do. What do you think, sweetpea?
Jack I think Bits knows me better than myself, to be honest.
Eric Jack! (blushing again)
Tater Yes, yes, is very cute! But I’m want to ask questions now, yes?
Eric (turns to camera) Now, I tried to get ‘em to quiz me on baking—because y’all and your mama know that I love it—but Jack here insisted that I get asked about football instead.
Jack Baking’s too easy. I figured you’d appreciate the challenge. You know a lot about American football, eh?
Eric (rolls eyes) “American football”—I know y’all in Canada just call it football too! Now, I’d argue, but that’ll take up the rest of this video, so I guess it’s time to get to the quiz!
Tater Yes!
(video transition with dramatic music)
Tater (holds up stack of cards in hands) Here, I’m hold questions about NFL and college football, plus questions about Zimmboni for B to answer. Like during Falcs’ tournament, I’m ask SOAP about their favorite subject first, then ask about their partner. B, is ready?
Eric As I’ll ever be!
Jack Gonna crush it, Bits.
Eric Let’s hope so, sweetheart.
Tater Will be good, B, I’m sure! Question one, name five offensive positions in the NFL.
Eric Lord, how easy—quarterback, running back, wide receiver, offensive tackle, tight end.
ONSCREEN CAPTION Score: 5/5
Tater See, B! You be fine! Name five of Zimmboni’s favourite foods.
Eric Ooh, alright. So PB&J sandwiches, chicken tenders... scrambled eggs, uh, cassoulet... (Caption Note: French food pronunciation is not butchered, because food)
ONSCREEN CAPTION Score: 4/5
Tater One more, B.
Eric Hm, let’s see—
Tater (snickers) Remember this easiest question in stack.
Eric Oh, hush, you.
Jack Bits? Maybe a dessert?
Eric (hits head with base of palm) Oh, goodness me, right! Maple sugar crusted apple pie.
ONSCREEN CAPTION Score: 5/5
Tater (nods) Yes. Okay, how many minutes in football quarter?
ONSCREEN CAPTION Answer: Quarters in the NFL and NCAA football are 15 minutes.
Eric 15 minutes.
Tater How long is Zimmboni’s pre-game ritual?
ONSCREEN CAPTION Answer: 15 minutes max. Like all athletes, hockey players have specific rituals before their games.
Eric About thirty minutes?
Tater (whooping laughter) 15 minutes, max.
Jack (laughs)
Eric (gasps, shakes head) That is not true, that can not be true! Honey, I’ve seen you take 15 minutes making your pre-game PBJ sandwiches. (scoffs)
Jack (makes a face)
Tater Sorry, B. Must give big zero for that question.
Eric (rolls eyes) Hmph!
Tater B, you get 20 seconds—name as many starting quarterbacks in the NFL as possible. Ready, set, go!
Eric Matt Ryan, Aaron Rodgers, Josh Allen, Philip Rivers, Tom Brady—ugh—Baker Mayfield, Derek Carr, Carson Palmer.
ONSCREEN CAPTION Score: 8
Tater Have 10 seconds, name as many as Zimmboni’s lineys when he finally move to first line.
ONSCREEN CAPTION Lineys = Hockey linemates. Fun fact: Jack moved from third to first line during his first season in the Falcs back in 2015!
Eric (opens mouth)
Tater But! Must name them by nickname!
Eric (single nod, determined expression)
Tater Okay? Ready, set, go!
Eric Alright so excluding Jack, that’ll be you, Tater, then we got Marty, Thirdy, Guy, and Snowy if you count the goalies!
Tater (solemnly nods) Always count goalies!
Eric Then that’s five for five. Gettin’ a lil easy there!
ONSCREEN CAPTION Score: 5/5
Tater Haha! Okay, who are on cover of Sports Illustrated for this season’s NFL and college previews?
ONSCREEN CAPTION Answer: Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. were on the cover for the NFL preview. Trevor Lawrence was on the cover for the college preview.
Eric Oh, Coach and I were just talkin’ about this! I know the NFL preview was Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry, but the college preview... (brief pause, placing chin on fist contemplatively) I think it’s Trevor Lawrence?
Tater Correct! What magazine cover did Zimmboni appear on first?
ONSCREEN CAPTION Answer: Trick question! Jack’s first ever appearance on a magazine cover was not as a hockey player. He first appeared on People Magazine as a baby with his parents, Robert “Bad bob” Zimmermann and Alicia Zimmermann.
Eric Can I ask a question?
Tater ...no.
Eric Well, shoot, alright. If you mean his first cover as an athlete, I’ll say Sports Illustrated, but if you mean his first one ever I think it’s People Magazine when he was a baby.
Tater (censored beep) Wow!
Jack (raises eyebrows) You remember that?
Eric Well, you told me! And Alicia did show me when we visited for Christmas one year. (smug smirk)
Jack (covers face in hand, exasperated sigh) Of course she did.
Tater Next question! How many Super Bowl rings does Tom Brady have?
Eric Oh goodness. I think it’s five?
Tater Six!
Eric What?
Tater Is six!
Eric (groans) Of course it’s six. Whatever, it’s fine, I try not to think about Tom Brady anyway. I don’t mind getting this one wrong. In fact, I’m kinda glad because I certainly don’t care for the man. Like, who—
Jack Bits. We’re in the middle of a game right now?
Eric (blushes) Oh, right.
Tater It’s alright, B, haha. But we move on with game now, yes? (single nod) Now, how many rings Zimmboni normally wear?
ONSCREEN CAPTION Answer: 1.
Eric One! He usually just wears his wedding ring, but today he’s got his 2016 Stanley ring! Wanna show it off, honey?
Jack (sheepishly holds up hands to show the two rings)
ONSCREEN CAPTION Fun fact: The team who wins the Stanley Cup get matching rings. Jack got his first one when the Falcs won the Cup in 2016!
Tater Is tough one now: How many times have the Atlanta Falcons made the playoffs?
ONSCREEN CAPTION Answer: 14.
Eric (sighs) Oh Lordy, that's hard. Alright, so by the time I was born they were at five so— (voice continues in fast forward) —they did in ‘98, then... ‘02? After was 2004, not 2005, or ‘06... so the next one was 2008. Then there was that streak from 2010 to 2012. Then the next one was 2016, and then ‘17. Not ‘18 and ‘19. So that’s... (begins to count on fingers)
Tater (back to regular speed, looking impressed) You have answer, B?
Eric I'm gonna go with fourteen as of this year.
Tater (censored beep)!!!
Eric (laughs)
Jack (censored beep), Bittle.
Tater Is amazing! You have both number and years!
Eric I’m Southern, and my daddy’s a football coach. (shrugs) Can’t help it!
Jack (chuckles) This is why I wanted you to answer stuff about the football instead of baking.
Eric (rolls eyes, swats Jack’s arm) Oh, this boy.
Tater Next question! What is most number of times Zimmboni fight in one season?
ONSCREEN CAPTION Answer: 3 fights.
Eric Ooh, shoot. I should know this one too, huh? Okay, so his first season he only got in one fight— (voice continues in fast forward) —and second season was also one, I think. After that, uhh, I think he finally got in two. Last year was three maybe? And this season hasn’t even started. But last year? Was it three? I don’t quite—hm.
Tater (back to regular speed) Your answer, B?
Eric I’m gonna go with three fights for last season.
Tater (shaking his head)
Jack What did I say?
Tater (censored beep) Is correct. (huffs) What year did Falcons join the NFL?
ONSCREEN CAPTION Answer: 1965.
Eric Uhhh, oh goodness, I know Coach told me this at some point... (pause) I think it was 1965?
Tater Correct! What year Zimmboni first try skating?
ONSCREEN CAPTION Answer: 1992. Fun fact: Bad Bob had Jack skating as soon as Jack could walk!
Eric Skating, huh? ‘Cause I’ll bet the son of Bad Bob tried on his first skates before he even turned one, huh? (smiles cheekily)
Jack (nudges with elbow, gives Eric a small smile) Not the question.
Eric Oh alright, not the question. Hmm, I know it was before you turned three so, I’ll say... (drawling out answer) nineteen-ninety... two?
Tater (throws cards out of hand, shaking his head) Is correct again!
Eric Oh my god!
(high pitched sound as Eric fist pumps the air)
Jack (laughs, bringing an arm around Eric before kissing his cheek)
Tater B, I'm frustrate to say you know Zimmboni as much as you know football.
ONSCREEN CAPTION FINAL SCORE: Football = 6, Husband = 6. T I E ! ! !
Jack Knew it. Told you so, Bits.
Eric That sounds like a chirp, and I will not have that on my vlog, Mr. Zimmermann. So with that, I guess we’re done! (looks towards camera, claps once) Well, that about does it for today’s video! Thank you so much to my special guests, Providence Falconers’ Jack Zimermann and Alexei Mashkov, for joining me today. (gestures towards Jack and Tater)
Tater (nods with a wide smile) Thanks for having us, B!
Jack (smiles and nods) Always great to be here.
Eric Be sure to check out the Falcs TV videos too! Link in the description or right over here! (points to space, highlighted annotation inserted) And thanks for tuning in! Next week, I’ll have a new video for y’all on the best ways to add protein to your favourite sandwiches.
(Eric, Jack, and Tater wave at the camera)
Eric Bye, y’all! See ya next time!

Today we remember the passing of Bobby Keys who Died: December 2, 2014 in Franklin, Tennessee
Robert Henry Keys was an American saxophonist who performed with other musicians as a member of several horn sections of the 1970s. He appears on albums by the Rolling Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Harry Nilsson, Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, George Harrison, John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker and other prominent musicians. Keys played on hundreds of recordings and was a touring musician from 1956 until his death in 2014.
Bobby Keys was born at Lubbock Army Airfield near Slaton, Texas, where his father, Bill Keys, was in the U.S. Army Air Corps. His mother, Lucy Keys, was 16 when she gave birth to Robert Henry (Bobby), her first child. By 1946, Bill Keys got a job for the Santa Fe Railroad in Belen, New Mexico. The family moved to Belen, but young Robert stayed with his grandparents in Slaton, Texas, an arrangement he was quite happy with. Bill and Lucy would have three more children, Gary and twins Debbie and Daryl. Lucy Keys Brubaker went on to become a state senator in New Mexico.
Keys started touring at age fifteen with Buddy Holly and fellow Texan Buddy Knox.Keys met the Rolling Stones at the San Antonio Teen Fair while sharing a bill with the group as a member of Bobby Vee's band in 1964. He is best known for his impressive resume as a musician (most notably the saxophone solo on the 1971 Rolling Stones hit "Brown Sugar") and his friendship with Keith Richards. Keys and Richards share the same date of birth. Notably, Keys and Richards threw a television set from the 10th floor of the Continental Hyatt House in West Hollywood, California during the group's 1972 American tour, as seen in the Stones' unreleased 1972 concert movie Cocksucker Blues. After renewing his acquaintance with the band via Gram Parsons, a mutual friend, Keys made his debut with The Rolling Stones on the Let It Bleed track "Live with Me" in 1969. In addition to "Brown Sugar," he was prominently featured on such early 1970s Stones songs as "Can't You Hear Me Knocking," "Rip This Joint" and "Sweet Virginia."
Keys and Mick Jagger also became close in the early 1970s, with Keys serving as best man at Jagger's wedding. Together with Jim Price on trumpet, Keys toured with the Stones from 1970 to 1973. Along with trumpeter Steve Madaio and fellow saxophonist Trevor Lawrence, Keys continued as a touring member for the first half of the 1973 European tour before leaving in Frankfurt, Germany on September 30. According to legend, Keys was abruptly dismissed by an incensed Jagger after filling a bathtub with Dom Perignon champagne (resulting in a debt to the band that significantly exceeded his entire salary for the tour) and drinking most of it. Although Keys did not dispute the veracity of the incident, he subsequently maintained in his memoir that he left the tour of his own volition to curtail his heroin addiction for the sake of his family. As a result of his strained relationship with Jagger, Keys only guested on some shows of the 1975 and 1978 American tours, missing the 1976 European tour completely.
Richards recalled Keys overcoming Jagger's objections to returning to the band: Years later, the Stones were rehearsing for another tour. This was 1980-something, and I bought Bobby a ticket and said, “Just get your ass here. When we rehearse ‘Brown Sugar,’ just sneak up and do the solo, man.” Once we did “Brown Sugar,” Bobby hit the solo and then I looked at Mick like, “You see what I mean, Mick?” And Mick looked at me and says, “Yeah, you can’t argue with that.” Once he just played those few notes, there really was no question. So Mick relented and said, “Okay, let’s get Bob back in the band.”
Keys performed only four tracks on the 1981 tour, on which Ernie Watts was the saxophonist. Keys was reinstated as the band's main touring saxophonist on the 1982 European Tour, together with Gene Barge. Keys played with the Stones on all subsequent tours up to his death.
Prior to touring with the Stones, Keys played with Delaney & Bonnie and Friends with Eric Clapton and George Harrison in 1969. In particular, during the year 1970 he gave an extraordinary series of notable performances. Keys started the year working on Clapton's first solo LP. With Leon Russell, he supported Joe Cocker on the 48-city Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour; the live album Mad Dogs & Englishmen was released later in the year, followed by a concert movie in 1971. During the tour, Cocker and the band were accompanied by a largely American entourage, including a choir, friends, wives, children, groupies and a single dog named Canina; the entire group numbered almost 40 people. After work on George Harrison's All Things Must Pass and more Sticky Fingers tracks, he joined the Rolling Stones for their fall 1970 European tour.
From 1973 to 1975, Keys participated in Lennon's "Lost Weekend" in Los Angeles along with Ringo Starr, Harry Nilsson and Keith Moon; while in Los Angeles, he played on Lennon's albums Walls and Bridges (including a notable solo on the #1 American hit "Whatever Gets You thru the Night") and Rock 'n' Roll. Although Keys' voice is heard on the last known recording session between Paul McCartney and Lennon (widely bootlegged as A Toot and a Snore in '74), he could not recall contributing to the session. He also played the solo on Leo Sayer's 1977 international soft rock hit "When I Need You" from the Endless Flight album.
In 1979, Keys was part of a Rolling Stones spin-off band called The New Barbarians (which also included Ronnie Wood & Keith Richards) that played two concerts in Canada and eighteen shows across the United States in April and May 1979.
In 1989, Keys became the musical director for Ronnie Wood's new Miami club, Woody's On the Beach. The first week the club opened Keys booked Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino and the Crickets. In the early 1990s Keys was a resident of Miami and had a band with former Stones guitarist Mick Taylor, Nicky Hopkins, Ivan Neville, former Stephen Stills bassist Calvin "Fuzzy" Samuels and others called Tumbling Dice. Although better known as a session musician, Keys released two albums of his own in the 1970s: a self-titled instrumental album on Warner Bros. Records that featured Ringo Starr, George Harrison and Eric Clapton in 1972; and Gimme the Key on Ringo Starr's record label Ring O'Records in 1975.
Keys appeared on December 16, 2011, with the Athens, Georgia-based band Bloodkin in their "Exile on Lumpkin Street" show at the Georgia Theater, which re-opened in August 2011 in its remodeled and enlarged space after the building had been gutted by fire in June 2009. Besides performing some of their own music, Bloodkin performed with Keys on numerous hits from three of the biggest Stones' albums on which Keys had performed, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and Exile on Main St.
In 2013 he played with the Rolling Stones at their Glastonbury Festival debut, headlining on Saturday, June 29. Keys played on their 14 On Fire tour with Roskilde Festival in Denmark being his last ever gig for the Stones. Keys was married to Holly Keys. Bobby's children are Amber Keys, Huck Keys, Jesse Keys and his step-son Randy Kaune. Bobby Keys died from liver cancer in hospice care at his home in Franklin, Tennessee, on December 2, 2014, sixteen days before his 71st birthday.

R&B duo (and real-life sisters) Chloe and Halle Bailey have unparalleled talent and an unbreakable bond. With a “sexy, darker” new sound and exciting solo projects on the way, the multihyphenates are all grown up and ready for their second act — both together and on their own. "You. Look. Stunning!" Halle Bailey watches as her older sister Chloe poses in a faux-leather Nanushka trench coat against a vibrant background of red and pink, Kelis's album Tasty blaring through the studio. Halle's eyes dart between the shots popping up on the monitor and the real-life vision that is 21-year-old Chloe, who smirks at her sister's instructions to "slay" and "work" as they echo in the cavernous studio. Chloe returns the favor when it's 19-year-old Halle's moment in front of the lens; being photographed separately is a rare occurrence for the pair. Chloe cheers Halle on as the latter poses in a houndstooth Area dress, nipped at the waist with a patent leather belt, and matching knee-high boots: "That's gorgeous! You're beautiful." When Chloe and Halle arrive at Milk Studios in Hollywood for our cover shoot on Oct. 29, the energy is celebratory; they are fresh from the set of the Freeform series Grown-ish. Chloe and Halle graduated from recurring roles on the Black-ish spinoff to series regulars for season two, playing college students and track star twins Jazz and Sky Forster. They — along with cast members Yara Shahidi, Trevor Jackson, Francia Raisa, and Luka Sabbat — just wrapped filming on the third season, which premieres Jan. 16. The next installment of the show promises an unplanned pregnancy, an acting debut from Kylie Jenner's former BFF Jordyn Woods, and a much-appreciated homage to Beyoncé's 2018 Homecoming performance. It's also a busy time for Chloe x Halle's music: in 2019 they dropped two singles, "Who Knew" and "Thinkin Bout Me," and are putting the finishing touches on their highly anticipated second studio album, Ungodly Hour, which drops this year. They are buzzing while talking about their new, more mature sound. "It's more grown; it's sexy, it's darker," Halle tells me. She and her sister showed up in laid-back looks before undergoing superhero-style transformations in a curtained-off section of the studio, where they snacked on chips and guacamole and drank green juice while trying on dozens of potential designer outfits. They are sweet and petite, and during a break from the photo shoot, they sit side by side on a velvet ottoman across from me. Both are wearing curve-hugging dresses by Dion Lee and have traded their matching Alevì Milano heels for slippers and slides. Chloe and Halle are defining themselves individually even more than before, and their style is part of that. Throughout the day, Halle will rock playfully sexy ensembles (my personal favorite is a Carrie Bradshaw-esque Maison Margiela button-down shirt cinched with a Zana Bayne belt). Chloe's outfits are equally grown-up and sexy, but with an edgy sophistication — she will channel Olivia Pope, smizing in a camel-colored Fendi trench coat and graphic Sophia Webster heels. Their looks will always complement each other but still reflect the woman wearing them. Their eyes are wide, their mocha skin glistening, braids cascading down their backs. The mood feels highly melanated and highly favored. Chloe and Halle's connection goes beyond the typical sibling bond — they are collaborators, costars, and best friends. It's what makes the stakes of this next stage of their career, as they explore a more adult sound and divergent career opportunities of their own, so high. To see them posing together is like watching a delicately choreographed dance. It's as if they each instinctively know which way the other is about to lean her arm or turn her head and will shift congruously. Between shots, Chloe and Halle smooth each other's braids, bump shoulders to the bass of "Milkshake," or talk in hushed tones. Chloe is the textbook older sister and ultimate hype girl ("The angel that's always in my ear," Halle tells me). "We'll always squeeze each other's hands or look in each other's eyes and crack a joke," Chloe says, admitting that they both sometimes feel anxious while posing on the red carpet or for photo shoots like this one. I recognize their subtle movements, exchanged glances, and seemingly secret language; it reminds me of the way that my sister and I — and sisters everywhere, really — exist in our own universe. Chloe and Halle spent their childhood in Atlanta before moving to LA, where they reside today with their parents Courtney and Doug and their 14-year-old brother, Branson ("We're the Three Musketeers," Chloe says). In 2011, they launched their YouTube channel with an impressive cover of Beyoncé's "Best Thing I Never Had." Wearing matching red tank tops and bouncy braided bobs, they showed off melodies reminiscent of vocalists well beyond their years (Chloe was 13, Halle just 11). They would go on to cover hits from John Legend, Alicia Keys, Lorde, and Rihanna. In 2015, their rendition of Beyoncé's "Pretty Hurts" got the attention of Bey herself, and she signed the duo to her Parkwood Entertainment management company. And, as they tell me, being the protégés of a megastar like Beyoncé is a masterclass in ambition. "She's a boss and she takes care of her own," Chloe says. "She's independent and knows what she wants, and she's not afraid to articulate that." They employ their mentor's take-charge attitude by trusting their instincts when making tough career choices. "That's what we truly admire about Beyoncé . . . she's allowed us to grow in our own right, and as much as she is vocal, she lets us fly on our own." Up until now, Chloe x Halle's sound has been bright, ethereal R&B soul; they released their debut EP Sugar Symphony in 2016, followed by a critically praised mixtape, The Two of Us. Their 2018 album The Kids Are Alright — with jazz-inflected trap-pop songs like "Happy Without Me," "Everywhere," and the Grown-ish theme song "Grown" — showcased their angelic harmonies, earning them Grammy nominations for best new artist and best urban contemporary album. They solidified their place in history with a chill-inducing performance of "America the Beautiful" at the 2019 Super Bowl. But with age comes experience and, yes, growth. The new Chloe x Halle era will reflect their sisterhood and the kind of women they aspire to be: powerful, strong, and effortlessly sexy. "We're not little kids anymore," Chloe tells me. Their sound has evolved from light and airy soul-pop into "edgier, grittier" R&B, like something you'd want to hear during an episode of Euphoria. They teased new music during an "electric, intense, and fun" performance at The Forum in LA late last year. "We played two new songs; 'Do It' — that's one of our favorites — and 'Rest of Your Life,'" Halle tells me during a phone conversation after the shoot. She describes both tracks as being high energy with party vibes. While Ungodly Hour will be a clear departure, the sisters seem to be more musically aligned than ever. Chloe and Halle say there's no formula to their music-making process. "We feel like that takes away any creativity," Chloe explains. They went delightfully old school for brainstorming sessions, filling two or three poster boards with magazine cutouts representing what the new project should feel like. Before creating music, they keep things breezy by having "tea time and girl chat" and narrowing down the themes they want to write about. "I'll make a beat and Halle will hear some really sick melodies and go on the mic and record them," Chloe says. "I'll lay some melodies down and splice [them] together, and then we do lyrics, but we never force it." Halle nods. "It's much like throwing paint on a wall and seeing what happens, and that's the beauty of it." When I ask how they landed on the album title Ungodly Hour, Halle tells me that it came from a single studio session with English electro artists Disclosure. "They are two brothers, and they're literally like mirrors of us," Halle says of duo Howard and Guy Lawrence, who they worked with on the up-tempo title track. "[Ungodly hour] was a phrase for that riff. We kind of spoke it into existence, you could say," Chloe continues. She reveals that one of their early mood boards included the phrase "The Trouble With Angels" (possibly a nod to the 1966 religious comedy starring Hayley Mills?), and notes how exciting it's been to tie those themes together. I spent hours holed up in my childhood bedroom plastering editorial images on any available surface, so it's nice to hear that some methods will never go out of style. But let's not get it twisted: Chloe and Halle aren't two girls making cute collages — they're artists with a precise vision and the talent to execute it. Their technique is free-flowing, but there's a keen attention to detail that influences those working with them. Singer-songwriter Victoria Monét, who helped pen chart-toppers for Fifth Harmony and Ariana Grande, collaborated with Chloe and Halle on Ungodly Hour. She confirmed my theory that they are Black girl magic personified. "I really admire their spirit," Monét said over email. "They feel amazing to be around, and their voices represent that." "They're so hands-on with everything, from melodies to lyrics and production," Nija Charles said over email. The 22-year-old songwriting phenom produced hits for Cardi B and Summer Walker and worked on the sisters' sensual kiss-off "Forgive Me." "Watching them work always makes me go back home and want to perfect my craft." Hands-on is certainly one way to describe the sisters, who play a role in writing, arranging, producing, and playing instruments on nearly all of their own music. What does it mean to two young, gifted, and Black businesswomen to have so much creative control of their work? "Since we were young, our parents instilled in us the power to do things on our own, and not rely on people if [we're] just as capable," Halle says. This encouragement is what motivated them to learn instruments and produce their own music as preteens. Although extraordinary on their own, Chloe and Halle are quick to praise those who have inspired them along the way. I can tell they harbor a deep sense of sisterhood within their own circle, a tight-knit group of family and close friends with the occasional superstar thrown in. It's galvanizing for them to see other young stars doing equally amazing things. "I stan over Zendaya. I love her, and Normani," Chloe says, beaming. "There are so many amazing women right now, and I'm just happy to be a part of this generation with them." Halle agrees, shouting out Grown-ish castmates Yara Shahidi, Francia Raisa, and Emily Arlook as women who uplift them when they're low. The feeling is mutual for 19-year-old Shahidi, who told me being part of Chloe and Halle's atmosphere is "truly a gift." "We share successes, challenges, frustrations, everything!" Shahidi said in an email. "I define sisterhood as an eternal bond with your best friend," Halle tells me. "I'm so fortunate that I get to do this with my sister every day." She looks up to Chloe more than anyone else; after all, as an older sibling, there's a responsibility (and sometimes pressure) to protect, guide, and set a good example. But Chloe is just as heart-eyed about Halle and lights up when talking about her. "Forget all the business stuff and the music and acting; this is my best friend," she says. "Whenever we're apart for 15 minutes, we're like, 'I miss you!' We're texting each other, FaceTiming. I love this one." I make a mental note to respond to unread texts from my sister. "You'll need each other one day" is something I heard a lot growing up, especially when being reprimanded for terrorizing my younger sister. And it occurs to me that Halle and Chloe might need each other even more this year. In 2020, they are each embarking on big solo projects: Chloe in the supernatural thriller The Georgetown Project, her first major movie role as an adult, and Halle as Ariel in the upcoming live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid. For Chloe, a self-professed scaredy cat, working on the "sophisticated horror film" with the likes of Russell Crowe, Ryan Simpkins, Samantha Mathis, and David Hyde Pierce has been a real game changer. "When I got the script, I fell in love with it. I was like, 'I have to do this,'" Chloe tells me. The movie follows a troubled actor (Crowe) who unravels while filming a thriller, and Chloe plays an actress cast alongside him in the project. She learned a lot about herself during the production process, but more importantly, she conquered her fear of scary movies. "I know how it works behind the scenes, so now when a scary movie trailer comes on, I don't close my eyes." When the topic turns to The Little Mermaid, Halle's enthusiasm is palpable. "It's so overwhelming, and beautiful, and breathtaking. I'm like, 'Wow, am I really doing this?'" she tells me. When I ask what she hopes to bring to such an iconic character, Halle takes a beat. "Freshness," she says. "Just being authentically me. It's amazing that the directors have been so forward in asking me to show my true self . . . that's been a really fun growing experience." Halle also tells me that she's most looking forward to the music ("Of course!"), and reveals that the movie will feature classics like "Part of Your World" and new songs written by composer Alan Menken, who scored the 1989 animated film. "I've been a fan of The Little Mermaid since I was 5, so those new songs are very exciting to me, as well as the old," Halle says. "That's probably like, ding, ding, ding! My number one." Halle's history-making casting news was announced in July 2019 and marked a major win for diversified representation, but drew criticism from those who don't think a Black woman should play a fictional sea creature. The defense came swiftly: Little Mermaid director Rob Marshall and Jodi Benson, the original voice of Ariel, showed support, as did Beyhive members worldwide. After spending a day in her presence, I can corroborate that Halle — with her doe eyes, dulcet-tone voice, and winsome charm — was born to play the role. I ask how she approaches the downsides that can come with celebrity. "It's beautiful that people are tuning in to our lives and that they love what we're doing, and I just think of them as friends," she says, unfazed. Chloe's older-sister senses are tingling. She sits up a little straighter. "You know when certain apps crash?" I do; a Twitter blackout is secretly one of my favorite things. "Who are you without these things, without your followers? You realize that you can't rely on outside validation for who you are as a human being. If I think I'm amazing, then I'm amazing." The sisters have flourished in the industry as Chloe x Halle the duo, two halves of a preternaturally talented whole. They appear at events together, maintain joint social media accounts, and don’t have separate Wikipedia pages (though that’s certainly going to change). They’re a dream team, navigating fame by leaning on each other. Working separately allows them to stretch as individuals, but as their careers evolve, it’s inevitable that their relationship will, too. Chloe seems genuinely joyful watching Halle grow into her own. “I see it happening right before my eyes and it makes me really happy,” she says. But those feelings of pride haven't come without a bit of loneliness, too — especially as Chloe films her first solo project. "In the beginning I was really, really sad," she tells me. There have been plenty of tears and, according to Chloe, plenty of text messages, too. "[Halle] texts all the time; daytime, all the time," Chloe laughs. "To have someone who's always in your corner encouraging you, and making you feel better when you're down . . . it's just such a good feeling. I'm just happy to have her as my partner in crime in life." Naturally, it’s also been “a little scary” for Halle, who admits that she’s been clinging to her sister over the years. Just as Chloe is the consummate firstborn, Halle fits snugly into her role as little sis, always looking to her “safety blanket.” She tells me that visiting Chloe on the set of The Georgetown Project gave her a new perspective. "I was just so proud of her, because you always want to see your beautiful sister succeed," Halle says. "We always do those monumental things together, so when I was able to be on the outside and look in, it was really cool." Ultimately Halle realized that — like gluing magazine cutouts to poster boards — some things don’t have to change: “Regardless of if I'm branching out, she's always going to be there. That bond and our sisterhood will never go away.” Though some things may be mapped out — production schedules, release dates, fishtail fittings — so much more lies ahead for Chloe and Halle. I ask where they see each other in five years. Halle springs up; she sees Chloe with every award in the book. “She’s going to flourish. What do you call it? EGOTs?” Chloe’s five-year vision includes even more plastered photos, but this time they’re of Halle, and they’re on giant billboards across the world. “I’ll be hearing her voice [singing] while walking down the street like, ‘Who is that? Oh yeah, that's my sister. I know her. You don't,’” she says. The three of us laugh, but their predictions aren’t out of the realm of possibility. Their Grown-ish costars agree: actor Trevor Jackson tells me he hopes to see them collecting armfuls of trophies and “truly dominating the world.” Shahidi insists Chloe and Halle’s hard work knows no bounds and remembers them simultaneously filming season one of Grown-ish and mixing their debut album, The Kids Are Alright. “The sky is not even the limit,” she cosigned. Chloe and Halle have more to shoot before the sun sets in smoky LA. It's been a long day, but their energy is still straight-up sparkly. We wrap up our conversation, exchanging thank yous before they disappear to the wardrobe area. They'll model more effortlessly sexy pieces from Nina Ricci and Fendi, cheerleading each other during lighting changes and eye shadow touch-ups, before the day gives way to night. As the sky changes, so does the vibe. Chloe is jetting off to North Carolina to film tomorrow morning without her sister, and they seem to be soaking up this moment in time. Things are coming to a close both on set and in their lives, chapters ending and new ones beginning. But no matter what comes next — together or separately, making music or making moves — Chloe and Halle will keep throwing paint at the wall and seeing what beautiful things come out of it. There's no magic formula. It's just what we sisters do. ★

SB Nation NFL community mock draft 2022
Tumblr media
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports
Welcome to our 16th annual writers’ mock draft!
The 2022 NFL Draft is nearly here, and like most fans, the writers at our team communities have strong feelings about their team’s draft needs and the players who could best fill those needs.
This draft is going to be unique for a few reasons. First of all, it’s being held in the glitz and glamour of the Las Vegas, Nev. Strip for the first time ever.
Last year, there were several high profile quarterback prospects, and where they were all headed (aside from Trevor Lawrence, who was generally expected to go to the Jaguars with the first overall pick) was a topic of much discussion. This year’s top quarterbacks — Sam Howell, Malik Willis, Desmond Ridder, and Matt Corral, aren’t generating nearly as much excitement, as they seem like they’ll need some development to become NFL-ready starters, but it’s still going to be fascinating to see where they land and how early in the draft teams will be willing to take a chance on them.
And third, because of myriad trades, a whopping eight teams have two picks in the first round this year. That’s certainly shaking things up a bit.
Without further ado, welcome to the 16th annual SB Nation NFL community mock draft.
No. 1: Jaguars select Aiden Hutchinson, DE, Michigan
From Demetrius Harvey at Big Cat Country:
The one need the team didn’t address much in free agency, though, was at edge rusher, which was one of the team’s biggest needs exiting the season. Now, with Hutchinson, the team will finally have a sure-fire edge rusher opposite of former first-round pick Josh Allen.
No. 2: Lions select Kayvon Thibodeaux, EDGE, Oregon
From Jeremy Reisman at Pride of Detroit:
There may be some concerns about his fit in Detroit now that they’ve said they will be employing more four-down sets, and Thibodeaux is coming from a 3-4 scheme at Oregon. And, yes, he will have to improve as a run defender at the next level.
But what Thibodeaux provides as a pass rusher in this league is rare and extremely coveted. The Lions finished 30th in sacks, 29th in pressure rate, 31st in team pass rush win rate. Thibodeaux will immediately improve the weakest point in Detroit’s defense. Perhaps the best part about him is that his physical tools will make him a Day 1 impact player, and he has a lot of room to improve his technique, meaning his ceiling could even be higher than his college level of production.
No. 3: Texans select Kyle Hamilton, S, Notre Dame
From T.D. Durham at Battle Red Blog:
Hamilton spent time lining up in multiple spots on Notre Dame’s defense in his three years at South Bend. In 31 career games, he produced 139 tackles, eight interceptions, and 16 passes defended. He covered slot receivers, lined up as a deep “read and react” safety, came off the edge as a rusher at the line of scrimmage, and showed his hard-hitting demeanor while working out of the box as well.
In Lovie Smith’s base Tampa-2 defense, Hamilton’s versatility means he can start on Day 1. Whether that start happens as one of two “high” safeties responsible for covering half of the field on any given pass play, or as a key piece in the run game who can crash on the ball from the box remains to be seen.
Best players remaining:
Derek Stingley Jr., CB, LSU
Charles Cross, T, Mississippi State
Ikem Ekwonu, T, NC State
Evan Neal, T, Alabama
Trent McDuffie, CB, Washington

NFL Drama
The NFL’s new year has officially began. We’ve already gotten crazy trades, people being released, some others signing big contracts. We also have some trouble in the NFL. Follow along with my analysis and my opinions with the moves being made and future moves that I think makes sense. We’ll talk about the Amari Cooper trade, Russell Wilson trade, Carson Wentz, and other notable free agency signings and trades.
My first though about this years first wave of free agency frenzy is…
“Jerry Jones will always be in the way of the Dallas Cowboys being Super Bowl contenders”
And I stand by that statement. Because I’m my so humble opinion, it wasn’t nowhere near time to cut or trade Amari Cooper. I understand the cap hit and the business side of things. But the big question is…
“Is CeeDee Lamb ready to take the true #1 role?
Is he ready to handle the true #1 type of coverage? Those are the questions that I ask due to how he’s prone to dropping the ball in critical and costly moments and how sometimes he’s a non factor even without Amari on the field. And CeeDee Lamb got those opportunities due to Amari getting #1 treatment from opposing teams. And Dal wouldn’t have even been considered for an MVP without Amari Cooper. He quite literally helped Dak Prescott progress into what he is today. Because without Amari, are we really talking about Dak being top 10 or anything? Not really.
Alrhough, Dallas gets quite the media attention due to the fact that they are “America’s Team”But now they’re getting this attention due to the fact that they continue to fail to meet unrealistically high expectations. Granted, every teams expectation should be Super Bowl…However, when you put the Dallas Cowboys’ recent body of work together…do you get Super Bowl Vibes from them? When you look at a team who blows out bad teams and then turns around and gets blown out by Denver, or turns around and struggles against good teams offensively…it’s giving…
“Average” “Mediocre”
But it’s Jerry World Jerry Jones loves the people he drafts over his free agents. And as of recently how has that worked out for him? You can argue that Amari Cooper was the one that got Dak ridiculously overpaid…
Dallas’ roster will be getting their own issue since I have quite the amount to say about who is on the roster and who is controlling it.
Another team which is seemingly doing a lot in free agency is the Jacksonville Jaguars. While they aren’t very good at all…and it’s quite tragic having as much talent go through there as they have had and to still be horrible like that. They’ve been making some moves mainly at the expense of Myles Jack and franchise tagging Cam Robinson, but in turn they signed
 Evan Engram, Tight End
 Zay Jones, Wide Receiver
 Christian Kirk, Wide Receiver
 Brandon Scherff, Guard
 Foley Fatukasi, Defensive Tackle
 Foye Oluokun, Linebacker
Will some of these moves help? Yes. However, they just spend a whole bunch of money and will probably be a little bit better than Houston…maybe. But they’re clearly rebuilding and trying to put the right pieces around Trevor a Lawrence. Some of these moves however I have some questions. But as of right now, they spent a whole bunch of money to go nowhere. But more on that later.
Another trade that kind of puzzled me was the Carson Wentz to Washington… Simply because what is it that you expect of Carson Wentz that can’t be found in any other guy. What makes him special? The fact that when he’s good, he has a high ceiling? When he’s good. He’s a gunslinger.? Does that offset the issue of when he’s not good in many times, which he isn’t. How more often or not, he plays horribly and is injury prone? Turnover prone, inaccurate at times, It’s one of those situations where when it’s great, it’s great, but when it’s not good, it goes Horribly. That type of unbalanced and extremism is not needed at the quarterback position. To be a successful quarterback in the NFL is to be accurate and have healthy ball control and not be inconsistent. In other words… “You’re supposed to handle your business, whether it’s a, it’s a bad team or a good one” And not have MVP games versus horrible teams and then turn around and wet the bed against good teams. Which is the equivalent to being average at best. Which is exactly what I think Carson Wentz is. And he’s going back to the by far worst division in football. It is not called the NFC least for no reason. Because when you really analyze each team overall, this is what you get as a collective… Average., slightly above average, and below average. So what does Carson Wentz Bring to the table that separates him from the rest in that division. That made it worth trading for him? The answer is absolutely nothing. In my opinion… This was an empty trade. Washington did not get better as a team with this trade. However, they could be not drafting a quarterback this year and wait until next year, when the draft class has better quarterback prospects in it. Like I’ve said earlier, most of these moves will either work out or not come October, November, December…
Between the Raiders and the Chargers… I don’t know who I’m more impressed with. Also, the Broncos with some serious. Moves as well. Only the Chiefs have disappointed me so far in the NFL free agency. Bottom line, that division is a lot harder to win now. Between Denver locking up Russell Wilson and the Charger signing in JC Jackson and Khalil Mack. And other notable moves made in that division. The AFC West just might be the best division in football at the moment.
Then you know the Deshaun Watson sweepstakes kept getting hotter and hotter until the end. The Sean ended up choosing a Cleveland Browns while simultaneously making a fool of the Atlanta Falcons. Of course, who will be getting an article written about them pretty soon. However, with DeShaun Watson, now the new face of the franchise, what happens to Baker Mayfield?
Quite simple. Either trade him or release him. However, that’s easier said than done. Most teams already have their QB1 situated as of right now. There’s not really a quarterback market for Baker right now. Which is a crying shame Do to Baker being a number one overall pick. And teams aren’t going to give a first or second round pick for Baker and you know why? Because both Baker and the Browns took this to the eye of the public and social media. Now, the whole world knows that you’ve got to get rid of them. They won’t trade for him, but will look at him if he gets cut. Oh, what a sticky situation… And let’s not mention the cap hit. Releasing him would do. They would have had a different outcome if both sides had acted a bit more Professionally. Because by Baker releasing that. Later to Cleveland, it lets the media and the public know of some type of discontent is going on in that front office. And then he demands to be traded, to which the Browns front office promptly responds with no. And the fact that this is all public doesn’t make it any better. Now there’s a mess in Cleveland. Is that a surprise? I like to think not. But all of this could have been avoided.
Number one, Baker did not have to play on that shoulder. He could have had that surgery earlier, came back next year, balled out and got paid something of what he’s worth.
#2 Baker could have played better even when he was healthy. He’s turnover prone and critical game moments, and that’s something I’ve seen with my own two eyes.
Side note: Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota Are starting quarterbacks and as of right now, Baker Mayfield is not. Mitchell Trubisky is a starting Quarterback in Baker Mayfield is not. Baker Mayfield wanted to go to the Colts. The Colts went and got Matt Ryan.
But this was a number one overall pick? With no market for him, that’s something. It’s quite pathetic. You mean to tell me that, Mr Progressive Or whatever insurance he sells, the one with quite the hype and edge to him. Is an average slightly above average at best quarterback?
Speaks to the horrible mess of an organization. It is. So many failed draft picks. So many careers started and ended in Cleveland because time and time again. They show us that the Browns organization as a whole is inept.
I feel bad for players like Myles Garrett and David Njoku Who have played well for an organization that is incapable of putting the right pieces around them.
Anyways, Baker Mayfield time in Cleveland, has come to an end. When will it officially end? Probably sometime after the draft period. Since there’s no market for Baker right now.
Anyway, I hope you guys enjoyed this issue…
See you guys next time!!

Bits and Pieces  -  Super Bowl LV  2/14/21
I am an unashamedly diehard football fan. I know the sport is rough and tough, yet it is working to be safer (not safe maybe, but safer). I liked basketball in high school, but primarily because I knew all the players since childhood – very small school (smaller than Marcellus). I liked baseball as a youth, but being there is so much better than watching it on TV.
My dad tried to interest me in golf, but I couldn’t wrap my head around hitting a little white ball on a grassy knoll and aiming for a tiny hole several hundred yards away. I can go for a walk or a hike and have a better time.
I’ve attended: soccer, hockey, rugby (talk about brutal!), drag, quarter mile and Grand Prix auto racing, rodeos, tennis, wrestling, track and field and probably more that I’ve forgotten.
In addition to some of the above, I’ve also participated in bowling, swimming, fishing, fencing, polo, badminton and volleyball.
So, I’m not very narrow in experiencing sports. And football still is a favorite to watch. Seeing my brother at the bottom of a play pile in rugby, lifting his head to see Mom and me in front of him, and with blood streaming down his face, saying “Hi, Mom,” kinda nixed me on that sport.
I found drag racing dull and boring – actually worse than baseball. The accidents and deaths in auto racing were gruesome.
Yet, I watch football every fall weekend – both college and professional. Often praying for the health of many players.
The Fifty-fifth Super Bowl is about to happen.
This past season was wonderful to watch because I am a BIG fan of Aaron Rodgers. I was so excited to watch the Packers move into the top spot for the Super Bowl.
Even before Rodgers and Mahomes started making their separate and joint State Farm commercials, I was struck by the potential of Patrick Mahomes.
I’ve been a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs since ‘79/’80 when fellow rugby player to John, Cecil Youngblood, did pre-season play for the Chiefs. Cecil may not have gone on to play in pro-football, but he has made the Augustana College Hall of Fame (football and basketball) and the Quad City Irish Rugby Hall of Fame. He is also Dean of Students & Chief Diversity Officer for Beloit College, if anyone is looking for a good college nearby.
Having these two teams (Packers and Chiefs) play in the 55th Super Bowl would have been momentous. I would have found it exciting to watch two outstanding – nice – quarterbacks competing.  But the momentous part is that Super Bowl #1 in 1967 was between the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs.
In 1967, Super Bowl Sunday was pretty much a non-event compared to today’s spectacle.
·         30 second ad: 1967 = $40,000…..2017 = $4,800,000
·         Admission ticket: 1967 = +/-$200…..2016 = +/- $1350
·         Viewership: 1967 = 51,000,000…..2016 = 110,000,000
·         Game day: 1967 = another game day…..2016 = unofficial national holiday
I’ve washed, folded and put away my Notre Dame and Green Bay Packers sweatshirts and T-shirts until the next season.
Just as I have enjoyed seeing Mahomes grow and develop, I am anxious to see what Justin Fields of Ohio State will do. Fields’ performance over Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence was brilliant, and I wanted him to tromp Alabama’s Mac Jones.
Alas, that didn’t happen any more than Rodgers over Brady. But I still have my David vs Goliath in Mahomes over Brady. Getting snacks and alcohol ready!

Most compelling storylines, players and coaches to watch this spring
Tumblr media
Shoulder pads popping. Whistles chirping. Coaches shouting.
After a one-year hiatus due to COVID-19, college football’s spring practices are back as teams slowly begin to resume more normalcy amid the worldwide pandemic.
What hasn’t changed since a year ago are the teams at the top of the sport’s upper echelon — Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Georgia.
Even with the Crimson Tide, Tigers and Buckeyes needing new quarterbacks, those perennial powers aren’t expected to slip much.
Here are the storylines, players and coaches to watch this spring:
Compelling storylines
1. Alabama and Clemson reload
Star quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Mac Jones are projected to be among the first quarterbacks taken in the 2021 NFL draft, but the Tigers and Crimson Tide have more-than-capable replacements ready to go. Alabama’s Bryce Young was the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback and top prospect in California in the class of 2020. Clemson’s D.J. Uiagalelei threw for 941 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions when he started two games for Lawrence, who was sidelined with COVID-19 last season. The Tide’s most pressing concern is replacing Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith and receiver Jaylen Waddle.
2. Can LSU get back on track?
Were the Tigers a one-hit wonder in putting together one of the best seasons in college football history in 2019? LSU fell off the ledge last season, finishing 5-5. The Tigers were 97th in scoring defense (34.9 points per game) and 39th in scoring offense (32 points). Bo Pelini is out after one season as defensive coordinator, and LSU coach Ed Orgeron hired Minnesota Vikings assistant Daronte Jones to replace him. Orgeron hired Jake Peetz, who worked with former LSU playcaller Joe Brady with the Carolina Panthers, to fix the offense.
3. Will Jim Harbaugh ever find the recipe at Michigan?
The Wolverines gave Harbaugh an extension that takes him through the end of the 2025 season, even though his teams have never beaten rival Ohio State and have lost four straight bowl games. Michigan has five new assistant coaches, including co-defensive coordinators Mike Macdonald and Maurice Linguist. They replace Don Brown, whom Harbaugh fired after the Wolverines ranked 79th in run defense (178.8 yards), 90th in pass defense (250.5 yards) and 95th in scoring defense (34.5) while going 2-4 in 2020.
4. Steve Sarkisian’s debut at Texas
Sarkisian, the former Alabama offensive coordinator and USC and Washington coach, takes over at Texas, where Tom Herman couldn’t get it done. Sarkisian has said the Longhorns will play with “all gas, no brakes.” Hopefully, they’ll do a better job of slowing down opponents after finishing 61st in the FBS in scoring defense (28.5 points per game) in 2020. And surely Sarkisian will do what his predecessor didn’t and get the ball in Bijan Robinson’s hands as much as possible.
5. Can Georgia close the gap on Alabama?
The Bulldogs should benefit from a full spring and offseason with offensive coordinator Todd Monken and quarterback JT Daniels, who played well in the final four games of 2020. Georgia is loaded at running back and wide receiver, and it has good depth on the offensive line. Its defense should again be among the best in the FBS. Its schedule is favorable. Is this the year Kirby Smart’s team finally catches the Crimson Tide?

Familiar faces in new places
1. Gus Malzahn, UCF
The Gus Bus travels to UCF, where the former Auburn coach will get to work outside the pressure cooker of the Plains. His teams’ offensive struggles lately led to his downfall with the Tigers, who were No. 77 in total offense in 2020, averaging 382.8 yards per game. The Knights return star quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who threw for 3,570 yards with 32 touchdowns and four picks in 10 games last season.
2. Bret Bielema, Illinois
It used to be a lot of fun being Bret Bielema, but lately, not so much. He’s involved in a bitter contract dispute with Arkansas, where he was fired after going 29-34 from 2013 to 2017. After spending a couple of seasons in the NFL, Bielema has returned to his Big Ten roots. He inherits an Illini program that hasn’t had a winning season in a decade.
3. Josh Heupel, Tennessee
The former UCF coach will try to extinguish the dumpster fire at UT, which figures to be headed toward NCAA probation after former coach Jeremy Pruitt was fired. A handful of the Volunteers’ best players, including running back Eric Gray and offensive lineman Wanya Morris, have transferred. Star linebacker Henry To’o To’o is reportedly on his way out as well.
4. Bryan Harsin, Auburn
Given his lack of experience in the SEC, Harsin was a surprising choice to replace Malzahn at Auburn. On the other hand, maybe that’s why he’s exactly what the Tigers need — an outsider who won’t be influenced or pressured by Auburn’s meddling boosters. Harsin went 69-19 and won three Mountain West Conference titles in seven seasons at Boise State.
5. Butch Jones, Arkansas State
The former Tennessee coach landed another head-coaching job after spending three seasons on Saban’s staff. He had success at Central Michigan and Cincinnati but struggled at Tennessee, where his teams went 34-27 in five seasons. Then again, compared to Pruitt’s tenure, maybe it wasn’t that bad.

Coordinator changes
1. Bill O’Brien, offensive coordinator, Alabama
The bad news: O’Brien, the former Houston Texans coach, has the unenviable task of replacing Sarkisian, who directed one of the most prolific offenses in SEC history in 2020. The good news: The past two Tide offensive playcallers landed head-coaching jobs; Ole Miss hired Lane Kiffin in 2019. O’Brien had a 15-9 record at Penn State after taking over the program in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal. He is one of two former NFL head coaches to join Saban’s staff; former Jacksonville Jaguars coach Doug Marrone takes over Alabama’s offensive line.
2. Marcus Freeman, defensive coordinator, Notre Dame
Freeman, 35, was the most highly sought coordinator in the FBS after his Cincinnati defense ranked 13th in total defense and eighth in scoring defense last season. The Broyles Award finalist was also LSU coach Ed Orgeron’s top choice before he elected to go with the Irish. Freeman replaces Clark Lea, who left to become Vanderbilt’s new coach.
3. Jeff Grimes, offensive coordinator, Baylor
Grimes worked the past three seasons at BYU, which went 11-1 in 2020 and had the No. 3 scoring offense (43.5 PPG) in the FBS. He replaces Larry Fedora, whom Baylor fired after it ranked next to last in the Big 12 in both scoring offense (23.5 points) and total offense (310.2 yards) in 2020.
4. Derek Mason, defensive coordinator, Auburn
Mason didn’t have much success as Vanderbilt, like most of the head coaches before him, but he’s widely regarded as one of the sport’s best defensive minds. He was Stanford’s defensive coordinator in 2012 and 2013; the Cardinal ranked in the top 15 in the FBS in scoring defense in both seasons. Mason and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, who previously worked at Georgia and South Carolina, give new coach Bryan Harsin’s staff a distinct SEC flavor.
5. Mike Yurcich, offensive coordinator, Penn State Nittany Lions coach James Franklin made a surprising move by hiring Yurcich to replace Kirk Ciarrocca after only one season. Penn State’s offense slipped in 2020, ranking 37th in total offense (430.3 yards) and 54th in scoring (29.8 points). Yurcich, who previously worked at Texas, Ohio State and Oklahoma State, caught Cowboys coach Mike Gundy’s attention while calling plays at Division II Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania.

Intriguing position battles
1. Ohio State quarterback
With former starter Justin Fields a projected top-10 pick in the NFL draft, the Buckeyes turn to a trio of highly regarded prospects without much experience. Backups Jack Miller III and C.J. Stroud didn’t attempt a pass last season. Incoming freshman Kyle McCord was the No. 5 pocket passer and No. 31 prospect overall in the ESPN 300.
2. Texas quarterback
Casey Thompson, who is entering his fourth season in the program, took a big step in possibly replacing former starter Sam Ehlinger by throwing four touchdowns in the Longhorns’ 55-23 win over Colorado in the Valero Alamo Bowl. Hudson Card, the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in the 2020 ESPN 300 and an Austin, Texas, native, will get a strong look from Sarkisian as well.
3. USC wide receiver
The Trojans have a potential Heisman Trophy candidate in quarterback Kedon Slovis, but he will have to identify new targets after Amon-Ra St. Brown and Tyler Vaughn departed. Highly touted Bru McCoy and Colorado transfer K.D. Nixon will need to draw some attention off Drake London, who had 33 catches for 502 yards in 2020.
4. LSU quarterback
Myles Brennan completed 60.3% of his passes for 1,112 yards with 11 touchdowns in the first four games last season, before an abdomen injury caused him to miss the last seven. In his absence, Max Johnson threw for 1,069 yards with eight touchdowns and one interception in five games, highlighted with a 37-34 upset of No. 6 Florida. Orgeron promises an open competition.
5. Georgia cornerback
The Bulldogs bring back almost everyone on offense, and they are deep and talented on the defensive line and at linebacker. The secondary is a concern, however, after starting cornerbacks Eric Stokes, Tyson Campbell and DJ Daniel left for the NFL draft and top backup Tyrique Stevenson transferred to Miami. At least Kelee Ringo, the No. 1 cornerback and No. 8 prospect overall in the 2020 ESPN 300, is returning after missing last season with a shoulder injury. Early enrollee Nyland Green was the No. 7 cornerback in the 2021 ESPN 300.

Impact transfers
1. Jack Coan, QB, Notre Dame (via Wisconsin)
Coan started 18 games for the Badgers in 2018 and 2019, then suffered a foot injury in preseason camp and missed last season. He is probably the favorite to replace departed starter Ian Book after completing 68% of his passes for 3,278 yards with 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions at Wisconsin.
2. McKenzie Milton, QB, Florida State (via UCF)
The former Heisman Trophy candidate missed the past two seasons while recovering from a devastating right knee injury that nearly ended his career. He had 8,683 yards and 72 touchdowns with only 22 interceptions at UCF, while compiling a 27-6 record as a starter. If Milton is healthy, he will be a welcome sight for an FSU program that desperately needs stability at quarterback.
3. Charleston Rambo, WR, Miami (via Oklahoma)
After catching 43 passes for 734 yards with five touchdowns in 2019, Rambo’s production slipped last season. Still, he was expected to be one of OU’s top pass-catchers this coming season before unexpectedly entering the transfer portal. He is a welcome addition to a Hurricanes unit that was plagued by drops in 2020.
4. Charlie Brewer, QB, Utah (via Baylor)
When healthy, Brewer was one of the most dangerous dual-threat quarterbacks in the Big 12. He started 40 games for the Bears, including 35 of the past 36. He threw for 9,700 yards, 65 touchdowns and 28 interceptions, while running for 1,039 yards and 22 touchdowns. He will compete against Texas transfer Ja’Quinden Jackson, who was the No. 34 prospect in the 2020 ESPN 300.
5. Eric Gray, RB, Oklahoma (via Tennessee)
Gray led the Volunteers with 772 rushing yards and was second on the team with 30 catches last season. The Sooners lost their top two rushers from 2020, Rhamondre Stevenson (NFL) and T.J. Pledger (transferred to Utah), but they get back Kennedy Brooks, who opted out in 2020 because of COVID-19 concerns.

True freshmen to watch
1. J.J. McCarthy, QB, Michigan
Harbaugh has been reluctant to play true freshman quarterbacks in the past, but McCarthy is the highest-rated passer he has signed at Michigan. The No. 25 prospect overall and No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in the ESPN 300, McCarthy threw for 1,392 yards with 16 touchdowns and no interceptions at IMG Academy as a senior. With Joe Milton and Dylan McCaffrey departing, McCarthy will battle Cade McNamara and Dan Villari this spring; Texas Tech Red Raiders transfer Alan Bowman joins the battle this summer.
2. TreVeyon Henderson, RB, Ohio State
Oklahoma transfer Trey Sermon was one-and-done with the Buckeyes, leaving a big hole to fill in their backfield. Henderson, from Hopewell, Virginia, was the top-rated tailback in the country, after running for 2,424 yards with 45 touchdowns as a junior in 2019 (Virginia high schools didn’t play football this past fall because of COVID-19).
3. Tommy Brockermeyer, OL, Alabama
Tide coach Nick Saban isn’t afraid to start true freshmen on the offensive line, and Brockermeyer is one of the more highly regarded linemen to sign with Alabama. With left tackle Alex Leatherwood departing for the NFL, Brockermeyer (No. 2 overall in 2021 ESPN 300) and J.C. Latham (No. 5 overall) might be in the mix to replace him.
4. Will Shipley, RB, Clemson
The Tigers don’t have an obvious replacement for departed star Travis Etienne. Shipley was the No. 2 running back and No. 22 player overall in the ESPN 300, after running for 4,173 yards with 50 total touchdowns in three high school seasons. He also caught 84 passes, and some recruiting analysts have compared him to Carolina Panthers star Christian McCaffrey because of his versatility.
5. Derrick Davis Jr., S, LSU
The Tigers desperately need help on the back end of a defense that surrendered 323 passing yards per game, worst in the SEC in 2020. ESPN Recruiting ranked Davis the No. 1 safety in the country; LSU held off Ohio State and Penn State to land him out of Monroeville, Pennsylvania.

16 Trevor Lawrence USA today high school football player of the year 2017 Thank you for the memories shirt
This track is exactly the 16 Trevor Lawrence USA today high school football player of the year 2017 Thank you for the memories shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this type of stuff that I like—it travels between euphoria and melancholy. While the song’s lyrics sound very urgent, lamenting a city’s empty streets, the lockdown, a curfew, it has an upbeat club beat to it which hits a…

RTARL’s 2020 NFL Season Week 16 Extravapalooza
Tumblr media
Between my beloved Patriots being officially eliminated from postseason consideration and my meticulously cobbled together fantasy team being summarily dispatched in the second round of my league’s playoffs (thanks a bunch, Russell Wilson), Week 15 really did a number on my enthusiasm for the remainder of the 2020 NFL season. But, I chose to undertake this weekly feature prior to Week 1, and by gorry I’m gonna power through this ennui and see it through to the end because that’s what a blogger does. I should be allowed to jump the line for the COVID-19 vaccine, honestly.
My picks are in BOLD, and the lines come to us courtesy of our friends at Vegas Insider. I use the “VI Consensus” line, which is the line that occurs most frequently across Vegas Insider’s list of sportsbooks. Your sportsbook of choice may offer a different number, and if you’d like my opinion on said number A) you are insane, and B) leave a comment below and I’ll try to answer at some point before things kickoff today.
Tumblr media
EARLY GAMES
Atlanta Falcons at Kansas City Chiefs (-10.5)
At some point all of these ridiculous blown leads and losses have to completely break the psyche of the Falcons, right? Was last week the final straw? I have no idea, but maybe! The Chiefs have been letting teams hang around in the bulk of their games lately, and my beautiful boy Clyde Edwards-Helaire is out for a bit, but I think this is the week where they finally open up the throttle and pulverize an opponent into dust. This feeling is based on NOTHING, and you should not lend it any weight whatsoever.
Cleveland Browns (-9.5) at New York Jets
The Jets winning outright against the Rams last week might be the most gobsmacking result I’ve ever seen in an NFL football game. Dare I say the Jets have turned a corner and will be a downright feisty squad in these final weeks of the season? No, I do not dare say that. They’re very likely gonna get rolled by a Cleveland team missing practically its entire WR corps. Hey, since we’re talking about the Browns, now’s as good a time as any to publicly congratulate one of my favorite Clevelanders on his recent wedding engagement: Way to go, dude! I couldn’t be happier for you.
Indianapolis Colts at Pittsburgh Steelers (-1)
Pittsburgh has failed to reach 20 points in any of their last 4 games, and none of those 4 defenses are as good as Indy’s. Big Ben’s season has sort of mirrored Cam Newton’s. They both looked pretty good coming out of the gate when they were totally fresh, but as soon as the bumps, bruises, wear, and tear started piling up their performances fell of precipitously. It makes sense, they’re both gigantic QBs who’ve taken tons of hits throughout their careers, and they’ve both undergone major surgery on their throwing arms. Unfortunately, it seems like they’re both ready for the glue factory. Things could get awkward in the Steel City this offseason if a catastrophically diminished Big Ben doesn’t want to retire and subsequently the Steelers have to weigh the decision to cut a legendary player. Then again, forcing people to do things they’d rather not do would be very much in character for Ol’ Greypeen, now wouldn’t it?
Chicago Bears (-7.5) at Jacksonville Jaguars
Aww man, don’t make me choose between my two favorite bad QBs. This is like telling me I can only bail one of my sons out of juvie for the holidays. Do I pick the one who was arrested for stealing a car and joyriding with the sheriff’s daughter (Mitchell), or the one arrested for selling coke to the entire English department at his school, and who was only caught because the husband of the teacher he was sleeping with caught them in the act (Gardner)? I guess I’ve gotta go with Mitchell, since he hangs around with a better crowd and still has a  chance at a successful future. I still love Gardner, though.
UPDATE: The Jaguars are benching Gardner Minshew and going with Mike Glennon again, because they aren’t taking any chances in their pursuit of Trevor Lawrence.
New York Giants at Baltimore Ravens (-10)
The Giants will have Daniel Jones back in the saddle for this one, but all the reports I’m reading are making sure to point out that he’s still dealing with lingering issues in his ankle/hamstring. That...doesn’t seem very good. The Giants are at their friskiest when Jones is able to escape the pocket and scramble, and two weeks ago when a hobbled Danny Dimes tried to give it a go against the Cardinals, it really didn’t go very well. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see some Colt McCoy mop-up duty here, as the Ravens seem to have found their groove a bit over the past three weeks.
Cincinnati Bengals at Houston Texans (-7)
I don’t like that I’m picking so many TD-or-more favorites in these early games, but what can I say, we’ve got ourselves a slate of lopsided and crappy games this week. If it weren’t for the Jets, the Bengals would be last week’s most stunning winner after knocking off the Steelers despite only putting up 230 yards of offense. Cincinnati has yet to announce whether Ryan Finley or Brandon Allen will be starting at QB, but c’mon. Waiting on that info is like chugging a quart of spoiled milk and waiting to see which end of your digestive system it’ll be violently expelled from.
Tumblr media
LATE GAMES
Carolina Panthers at Washington Football Team (-1)
As of right now, it remains unclear who will be starting at QB for the Football Team. The latest report I could find said that Alex Smith was feeling soreness in his injured calf, and that the team was “less optimistic” about him playing than they were earlier in the week. I’m operating under the assumption that it’ll be Dwayne Haskins. Whoever ends up back there, they won’t have WR Terry McLaurin to throw to, which sucks for them. Beastly RB Antonio Gibson is going to try to play through the turf toe injury that was supposed to keep him out for the remainder of the season, which is admirable, but I’m not sure how effective he can be. It’s hilarious that this positively moribund game has genuine playoff implications.
Denver Broncos at Los Angeles Chargers (-3)
I can’t think of a single fucking thing to say about this game. I really am an East Coast Bojack. Hey, how ‘bout that Anthony Lynn clock management? Pretty bad, right!?
Philadelphia Eagles (-3) at Dallas Cowboys
I don’t like this any more than you do, but Dallas is coming in hot and while Jalen Hurts has been a fantasy football beast and a lot of fun to watch, the Eagles offense in general still isn’t strong enough for me to roll with in a game that feels like a total shootout. I’m sure Andy Dalton won’t let me down!
Los Angeles Rams at Seattle Seahawks (-1)
I’ve gotta think the Rams are gonna come out ready to rock ‘n roll for this one after their spectacularly embarrassing performance against the Jets last week. The inversely proportional relationship between Seattle’s offense and defense is one of the more puzzling aspects of the season so far, as now that they can actually stop people from scoring Russell Wilson has turned into Mitchell Trubisky. Russ is awesome and I think he can get his shit together, but the Rams are too tough an opponent to do it against (unless you’re the Jets, I guess).
SNF: Tennessee Titans at Green Bay Packers (-3)
A nighttime game in Green Bay with windchills in the teens and a chance for snow pitting a pair of Super Bowl contenders against one another? Fuck yeah, this is good football. The Aaron Rodgers-Davante Adams connection has progressed well beyond the bounds of reason and now exists purely in the realm of the supernatural. They are definitely going to cause major problems for Tennessee. My pick is based purely on the Titans ability to chew up game clock by repeatedly handing the ball to literal hellbeast Derrick Henry. I think both defenses are in for a long night.
MNF: Buffalo Bills (-7) at New England Patriots
This is 100% a homer pick. The Bills are rolling and are unquestionably the best team in the division, but I’m banking on the Pats making one last stand of schematic wizardry here to keep the game within a touchdown.
Last Week’s Record: 4-8-1
Season Record: 95-105-7
