6 and 18 for the book asks!!
thanks for sending in an ask <3
6. what books have you read in the last month?
being caught up in Assessment Mania, i've actually read pitifully little these last couple of weeks, but some highlights have been: re-reading henry v, agatha christie's ordeal by innocence (this was focused not so much on the investigation of a murder, as on its "human aspect", the consequences which the family of the victim faced -- the ending wasn't christie's best work, but the character construction was excellent!), a number of lovecraft's stories (in an attempt to get into the cthulu mythos), a non-fiction work called horror: a thematic history in fiction and film, which has a great chapter on mad science (my beloved <3), and robet bloch's psycho, which i am currently reading & uh. i wouldn't say "enjoying". it's quite terrifying, actually!
18. do you like historical books? which time period?
i've just realised this could mean "books about history" or "books from a specific period in history" :') oh well, let's do both.
i very much enjoy learning about history, though i rarely have the time to pick up books written specifically about historical moments/figures/etc. i glean a lot of historical background from reading other types of non-fiction (mostly literary criticism), though! i'm quite fond of the late 18th and 19th centuries in particular, and one book which i plan on reading soon is nicholas roe's radical years on wordsworth & coleridge :)
when it comes to books from histrical periods, i once again gravitate towards the 18th and 19th centuries (this is largely due to my incurable love of the gothic genre), although i very much enjoy early modern drama & medieval (english) literature too! i wish that 18th c novels in particular were more widely read because they offer, among other things, some of the most entertaining plots i've come across, emotionally highly-wrought characters, and much more fun that you'd expect! some of my favourites are roderick random, a simple story, the castle of otranto (the most accessible of the lot, if you're interested in getting into some 18th c literary shenanigans...), and caleb williams.

Hi, I am your Ottoman Obession era Anon.
Yes, I would recommend the book. Shadows of God by Alan Mikhail. I think i pick thus book after halfway watching Rise of Empire : Ottoman in Netflix. Why you should read this book? Please allow me to share my thought
1. I am not someone from History study or Labguage study. Therefore, I want to read history book that are easy to understand and not overcomplicated. You know, most often I put down the book because I couldnt follow the story or underatand what is going on. And i am not native English speaker, and it just hard for me to read certain book. Or maybe the author tried to hard to impress reader with bombastic word that after googling the word, i am still dont see how it make sense.
But this book? Damn, i feel like a girly pop reading a diary. It doenst just blandly narrated a story but I found this book interesting because it also give us the insight of the character. If i look back, it follows Selim journey from his childhood to how he claimed the throne. I can understand what is going on in the book and not to get lost myself.
Ngl, since the historical figure mention in the book is Selim, i am now rooting for him to claimed the throne and praying for his mother wellbeing. And oh! I love Selim mother the most in the book. The author touched a lot of aspect being an ottoman prince mother and his mother contribution during Selim ruling as a gavernor in Trapzor. They are very close to each other and i found it really sweet.
2. It does not exclusively follow Seim jourbey. The author also gives us hindsight on what is happening aroubd Europe at the time. I have read history book before and they exclusively narrate the historical figure and it made me confuse when there is foreign figure appear around the main historical figure. But this book? It tell us what was happening around, guve an idea where actually this event set place and how it correlate to other event in history. It became so fun to read when I can recognize othe histrical figure. For example the borgia. I know the borgia family because of a manhwa (korean type of comic).
It so fun to read and trigger my roller coaster emotionally.
3. I found it more interesting when I learn that Selim as said in the book is not highly favoured by his father. Especially when he is sent far away from Constantinople (or istanbul atm) assigned as governor. They said that the more far away the son is sent to givern a state, the lesser the chance the son get to be a Sultan.
It really made me think, did Beron apply the same thing? Except his intention to worsen the sibling relationship? Because i think I remember in one of your fic you had this scene where eris mentioning how lucky for Elain that Lucien is exiled. Otherwise, Beron would pit her and his other daughter in law. Which to me was genius since Beron wanted his son to fight each other for the throne.
Even in the book, it mention that the father/current Sultan is not excluded from this fraticide practice. The son still can and have the right to claw their own father from the throne
I recommend this book. Why? Simple, because someone slow like me can read it and enjoy the drama in this book. I think you would too. Sorry for the rambling tho.
You're back! This is the exact kind of recommendation I'm looking for, ESPECIALLY from a non-fiction book. When I was in grad school, one of my professors discussed what made good, academic writing ESPECIALLY if you were writing for lay people. And the hallmark of it was accessibility. Even within niche topics, your writing shouldn't be so convoluted that you need to re-read sentences over and over.
You can get away with some of it in academic journals but I'd argue if I'm reading a paper on a topic I'm knowledgable and published in, and I'm asking myself "what the fuck are you trying to say?" you've done a bad job.
And books ESPECIALLY because history is, in my opinion, one of the most fascinating subjects AND should be one of the most accessible ones as well. History is like gossip, it's half rumor, half fact depending on who is telling it. It's like when your friend texts, "can I say something fucked up?" like HELL YES tell me the atrocities and salacious gossip, I beg you.
I had a world history teacher in high school who once said history was the greatest soap opera and he made it accessible in a way that I've always been obsessed. And I'm saying all this because you said it was dumbed down enough for you to understand- but consider that it was WELL written enough to keep your attention rather than being so smugly satisfied with itself that the author renders the subject matter boring.
You sound exceptionally smart to me. You're reading in two languages! Give yourself WAY more credit and remember that a LOT of academics are just puffed up blow-hards that could use a regular person telling them, actually- you're not that interesting.
#im gonna pick it up this weekend and ill report back to you!#haters book club - but lovers edition#every month we pick a new history read lmao

question! i think the kingdom of aragon and catalunya/catalan countries were together histrically, right? let's say (hopefully in the near future lol) spain dies and the catalan countries became a country, would aragon be included, or be independent alltogether? i must say i've never seen an independent/nationalist movement for aragon, but perhaps it's bc i've never interacted with aragonese ppl
yes, historically, the kingdoms of aragon, majorca, and valencia, and the principality of catalonia made up the crown of aragon in what is currently the spanish state, with the kingdoms of corsica, naples, and sicily also making up the kingdom for a good chunk of its existence.
the thing is that many aragonese people feel iffy with the terms catalan countries, because it includes the aragonese parts of la franja that speak catalan (and "takes them away" from aragon). i do think its a good term for catalan speakers to feel unity, because we do need it, but i dont believe it would work out as a political entity. if independence of any kind is (hopefully) ever achieved, it would be catalunya on one part, and aragon on another, ideally with a sort of union between us (and the valencian country, balearic islands, etc), because god knows we fucking need it. i also have to clear up that many of the reasons that aragonese people dont like the term "catalan countries" is because, you guessed it, anti-catalanism! so in order for a more widespread nationalist movement in aragon, i think many people would have to get over that first, because many times people compare any type of independentists to catalan ones, as if it was a bad thing.
im not surprised you havent encountered the aragonese independence movement, its quite a small movement, and even within aragon it isnt extremely welcomed, people have given in to the main culture in the spanish state, i guess. the main independentist parties i can think of off the top of my head is puyalón de cuchas (which is, btw a terrible translation from aragonese meaning "leftist uprising" or "leftist rise". when it literally translates to "uphill of the left hand") and purna. for one of the sort of fathers of the modern aragonese independentist movement, there is gaspar torrente, who founded estado aragonés in 1933. the modern party estau aragonés takes its name from there.
#hopefully i explained myself well enough‚ if not feel free to ask me to elaborate more!#preguntas#anon

These Trump Photos Aren't What They Seem
COMMENTARY:
Cenk, you and your cast of characters are serious Marxist purists. Marxism may be a fairy tale, which is an observation I share with Putin, but it is a very intellectually rigorous fairy tale, That's what makes it so attractive to Russian Intellectuals, It's like Chess. Its bullshit, but the FEELING behind the intellectual focus is addictive in its pleasures, I mean, consider the performance art of Jean Paul Sartre in the mythos of Paris after the war. The thing that drove him forward as a Resistance fighter was Marxis ideology, just like the Red Army, That passion is what militant Marxism is all about, Les Miserables, Ou est le papier? You guys are like Jean Paul Sartre, in the coffee shops, where Maruxist matched wits will all commers. Like Christopher Hitchens, Yourr community is like that, You love what you are doing, I love what you ar doing, although I dont buy your alleged "Progressive" agenda, if actaully made into law. The fact you love Bernie Sanders says it all, Sanders is exactly correct. The issue is that Progreessives don't know how to implement his Social Safety Net, The Green New Deal is alla about Bernie Snaders's Social Safety Neet the economic social fusion enging that will drive Stardhip America to achieve 2001: A Space Odyssey, You'll love this, honest to tod, however you discern that in your consciousnesss. The class ceiling, between your visualization of The Green New Deal as defined by Bernie Sanders' Social Safety Net and actually fulfilling the fantasy as a national mobilization like after Pearl Harbor is the critcal historic analysis of the Post Modern Historic Deconstruion . The process id deliberately antagonist, an existntial dilemma,, N.T. Wright's interpretaion of Pauline Theology version either the Jesus Seminar or Pro-Life solo scriptura Calvinism objective t conrol the narrative of the Gosples to a Pro-Life disinformation, You are part of that depabe below the class ceiling of Post Modern Histric Deconsstruciton, If you add either Hegel or Clausewit or Hegel and Clauewitx to your calculus, the way forward to the Green New Deal is Biden's Buld Back Better toransition form the Boomer Food Fight to the intenitonal synthesis of the US Constition, Below the class ceiling of Post Modern Historic Deconstruction is dialectical Idealism on one side of the coin of Christolgy and dialectial Materialism on the other side, This is the Virtue of Altruism versus Virtue of Selfishness of Project 2025,/Pro-Life Christian Natinalism, The JEsus Seminar wants to remove all taces of Chrisology from the Gospels, wich is the David Koresh version of Chrisianity, The Moral and the Material. Tha's below the Glass Ceiling, Add Hegel and that takes you above the cieling to synthesis, the Yin;Yan of the Kingdom of Heaven, That's the only thing missing from the social engineering required to achieve Bernie Sanders Social Savety Net leading to 2001: A Spce Odyssey, The turd in the GOP punchbowl is the NEgor Problem of William F. Buckley's white supremacist rebuttal to James Baldwins Critical Race Theory, Go wathch. Buckley pesents the core values of Project 2025: he does not repreent the Party of Lincoln, I am an Eisenhower Republican, I'm an Army brat and the difference between an Eisenhoer Republciana and Georg Marshall is that Eisenhower voted, breaking with a tradition that goes back to Valley Forge. I am about as apolitical and Jack Germond was, and Ernie Pyle. I'm not a journalist, I'm a process theology guru, like Frank Bruns, the Army brat who coined the DEI slogan: Be All You Can Be. His mission with Task Force Δ to bring all the Human Potential and New DEI high performance technology into the lessons leaerned fro the first generation of US Army Starship Troopers. His job was to transform everyone in the Army commintion into a process theology guru and the essential incubator of the America Jedi Knights of the American Christian Just War Doctrine of Clausewitz and George Marshall going back to the Talking Cross of the Gospel of Peter. Just ad Hegel and the Pro-Chioice version of Jesus will become instanlty transparet, like thsoe Magic-Eye graphic that become 3-D, Your epistemology is sound, but just finite, Add Hegel and make it infinite

The movie Cast Away with Tom Hanks is from 2000 and probably takes place around the same time. Tom Hanks in it is a FedEx guy who's all about efficient postage. He makes a point in the movie of sending a running clock from the US to Russia to prove that it only takes them about 4 days. It's a pretty good scene with a kid receiving the odly triangular package and running through a wintery russian city.
I, now in the year 2024, try to find silk taffeta for a costume, which normal fabric stores don't have. From watching histrical costuming youtube I know the first adress is silkbaron.com. I go there, order a few samples, they arrive, I'm happy and go on planning my project.
So then I try to place my order of 6 yards of gorgeous teal silk taffeta, which totals around 200$ and almost have a heart attack at checkout, because the shipping is 95$.
In the year 2024. For a route as well travelled as US-Germany. For a shoebox sized package around 1,5kg. 95$!
How much did Tom Hanks pay for his clock stunt in the movie?

I may make fun of Callisto and calling him motherfucker and trash and stuff like that, but the amount of love i have for that man and his love for Penelope knows no bounds. Like look at these moments from the novel:
Like yes Callisto may be the ruthless man with homicidal tendencies™️, but he’s also the man who refused to say cuss words in front of his pregnant fiancée/wife because he thought the baby would hear him. He’s a fucking disaster and I love him😭🤧
#this is a Callisto Regulus stan account#yes most of these are from the poisoning arc#it was just really emotional 😭#i fucking love this man#callisto regulus#death is the only ending for the villainess callisto#death is the only ending for the villainess#Penelope Eckart#Penelope x Callisto#death is the only ending for the villainess novel#ditoeftv#the villainess's ending is death#death is the only ending for the villain#tved#manhwa#isekai#histrical#fantasy
