I haven’t colorized in a long time! Anyway, here’s Olga and Maria, c. 1912. The first is the original black and white; the second is a version I did last year in December; and the third is one I did recently. Lots of options!

this manatee looks like it’s in a skyrim loading screen
#lol good luck finding all of the photoshopped versions in the rb history. ‘manatee restored’ is still my favorite of all time#misc#I encourage anyone dyslexic to try rotating him in your mind. I can’t do that; which is why I’m asking you to.#also: a bunch of tags are surprised this isn’t ‘shopped#it’s the lighting. backlit by the sun (which is diffused through the water) but also forelit artificially#the artificial light - a flash pack or something - casts a hard shadow under the creatures arm#which normally wouldn’t be possible if backlit by the SUN; you’d see a less-hard/more-fragmented shadow above water#as light sources ‘compete’ in a sense - and since there aren’t any light sources which can outshine the literal sun#it looks a bit weird when the darkest shadow is being cast from any other origin point - which is what’s essentially happening here#I don’t know the mechanics of how light travels through water; but I know the effect is substantial even with relatively short distances#also: it’s been balanced and color corrected by the author of the photo - who made deliberate choices to bring out the full potential#so it’s not like it’s a fresh and untouched export#but the kind of ‘tacked on’ appearance of the creature is a result of the lighting conditions within the image

It's a rough world out there for people who were teenagers during the exact slice of gaming history where indie video games had become feasible to develop and distribute globally, but the definition of "indie" didn't yet encompass corporate studios and million-dollar budgets. They'll tell you their favourite game when they were a kid was, like, a point-and-click visual novel whose protagonist dreams they're a vast formless sea monster that learns about the concept of colours after finding a discarded helium balloon, or a hypertext fiction/precision platformer hybrid exploring gender as a mechanism of social control, and you think they're either being pretentious or deliberately fucking with you, but no, that's just what the indie gaming scene was like for a couple of years there. The sea monster thing got a front-page feature on the same site that made Bloons Tower Defense a household name – it was literally played by millions of people.

Hello! I am in LOVE with the images you've shared from your Grandfather's slides. I was wondering if there were more you have shared elsewhere or if you have any intention of sharing more. They are gorgeous and your grandfather had quite an eye. Particularly the one of the fog in the valleys captured from a up a mountain. Thank you for sharing these!
Hi!
Sorry I sat on this ask for a while. This set of photos is particularly valuable to me but also really fraught due to family drama. For full disclosure, I never met the man. He is my "step-father's" father and he died in the 90s. However, I consider my (late) step-father to be my real father, and that, and these photos, have become the subject of some nasty family nonsense.
In any case, yes, I always wanted to share them more than anything. I scanned them for this reason. There is so little color photo from the Korean War and most of what we have was taken by journalist. However, my grandfather was an early adopter of a lot of technology and that includes color photo for amateurs.
Here's a favorite
I've put a few others under the tag "kodachrome" though those are mostly one's I've MASHified (like the one below)
However, you can view them all at this Google Drive link.
