Our suite at The @hortongrandhotel came with a fire place! The hotel is part of San Diego’s heritage. The building as it stands now was originally two buildings, the Horton Grand Hotel and The Brooklyn Kahle Saddlery. The buildings were scheduled for demolition in the 70’s to make way for a shopping mall, the now defunct Horton Plaza. Happily, The Hotel and Saddlery were instead taken down, one brick at a time, with careful cataloging of all the buildings components. The remnants were stored for reconstruction at a later date. That date came in 1986, when they were resurrected and joined together by an atrium at the entrance. Some people like to say this hotel is haunted, but those would have to be some pretty patient ghosts! The balcony view from our hotel suite at The @hortongrandhotel you can see the glass covering for the atrium that joins the original structures of Horton Grand Hotel and The Brooklyn Kahle Saddlery. . . . The hotel is located in San Diego’s Gaslamp district, which was formerly known as “The Stingaree” a restricted district where gambling, prostitution and elicit drug use were practiced without legal censure (as long as things stayed within the boundary lines.)
