Getting in on #HistoricalApril by @lina_sewhistorically with a set of 1940s British Women's Land Army uniforms for day 7: #workwear . I've always had a huge historical wardrobe crush on the jodhpur-style breeches issued to the WLA, as well as the green wool sweaters. One of my favorite dresses in art of all time is the sheer striped chemise gown from Antoine Vestier's 1785 "Portrait of a lady holding a book." I just love the puffed upper and narrow lower sleeves and the sheer chemise showing above the neckline. Three day dresses from 1911, heavily influenced by the orientalism of the period. The middle dress is by Maison Elise Poret, while the dresses to either side of it are by "Mmes Dieterle et Mistinguett." A man's early fifteenth-century ensemble. Based off of an illustration from the French "Croniques abregies," this outfit features soled hose worn with a golden pourpoint (doublet) under a short houppelande, called a haincelin, with bagged sleeves and gold fringe trim. I simply adore the rich orange color of this 1895-96 reception dress, which @augustaauctions sold in 2012. 1872 ballgown from "Revue de la Mode." This is actually a simpler design for the early 1870s - what is sometimes now termed the "first bustle era." This 1760s casaquin jacket shows the transformation between longer jackets earlier in the century and towards the shorter-skirted caraco and pierrot jackets of the latter part of the century. Earlier casaquins were often longer and looser, but by the 1760s they were more frequently hip-length, worn over a stomacher and self-trimmed around the edges. A c. 1921 lovely, light-colored summer dress. I love the varying orientation of the stripes on the fabric, and the clever use of buttons as both functional and decorative. A slinky ice blue evening gown from the Met's collection of 1930s Bergdorf Goodman sketches for Day 27 of #HistoricalApril - "mirror mirror on the wall." Day 25 of #HistoricalApril is "novelty and innovation." This ca. 1868 dress of sheer piña cloth over a silk underdress is made in a shockingly magenta color enabled by the invention of the aniline dye fuchsine. Fuchsine was the second aniline dye synthesized, in 1858, and created the color we now call fuchsia. Once again late to the party, but for Day 23 of #HistoricalApril, "odd and confusing," I present one of the most mind-boggling fashion trends of all time, regency-era English court dress. This 1796 gown to be worn at Court has the raised waistline of the emerging neoclassical trend, but because Queen Charlotte continued to require the wearing of hoops at formal Court functions, women ended up with panniers worn basically under the armpits. Combine that with the 1790s flair for VIVID color and excess ornamentation, and you have a dress that seems completely garish and weird to modern sensibilities.
