Old Vegas, Henderson, 1978, a theme park based on 19th century Las Vegas Valley and early city of Las Vegas history.
Old Vegas opened Dec. 1978 on Boulder Highway in south Henderson. The park featured replica of the first Mormon outpost in the Las Vegas Valley, and a commemoration of Rafael Riviera, the scout who "discovered" the Las Vegas Valley in 1829. A western town was later added, replicating the first structures of Block 16 in Las Vegas. The park housed historic items including an 1875 locomotive built for the Eureka & Palisade Railroad in Nevada, and some of the buildings from El Rancho Vegas.
Houston-based Old Tucson Corp (aka Westworld Inc) developed the facility patterning it after a similar theme park in Arizona called Old Tucson.
Old Vegas closed in '86. The road sign for the theme park remained on Boulder Hwy through the 90s.

rating every stateâs motto
alabama: âaudemus jura nostra defendereâ, trans. âwe dare to defend our rights.â 4/10, not the worst but i donât think it needs to be said. bit pretentious
alaska: ânorth to the future.â 7/10, i think itâs cool but i have no clue what it really means. higher points for not being religious (i think)
arizona: âditat deusâ, trans. âGod enriches.â 0/10, keep that guy out of it
arkansas: âregnat populus,â trans. âthe people rule.â 8/10, simple, love the idea, think itâs a great standing
california: âeurekaâ, trans. âI have found it.â 1/10, found WHAT???
colorado: ânil sine numineâ, trans. ânothing without providence.â 0/10, i had to look up what this means and it is religious again
connecticut: âqui transtulit sustinetâ, trans. âhe who transplanted sustains.â -1/10, not only is this religious but itâs also not openly religious. pure evil
delaware: âliberty and independence.â 7/10, itâs boring, but itâs something
florida: âin God we trust.â 0/10, come on man
georgia: âwisdom, justice, moderation.â 6/10, sure
hawaii: âua ma uke ea o ka âÄina I ka pono,â trans. âthe life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.â 10/10, yes!!! has something to do with their history!! itâs badass! makes me feel cool as hell to say!!
idaho: âesto perpetuaâ, trans. âlet it be perpetual.â 1/10, itâs not religious and it is historical but i donât like that itâs connected with the confederacy :/ (quoted from the president of the confederacy btw)
illinois: âstate sovereignty, national union.â 0/10, directly associated with statesâ rights to choose during the civil war
indiana: âthe crossroads of america.â 7/10, i like that itâs more descriptive of the state than the government and itâs really funny to me that they identify like this. itâs like your friend doing something amazing and you going âyou couldnât have gotten there without me driving you to 7/11 that one timeâ
iowa: âour liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain.â 6/10, i want to dislike this one because itâs so middle-of-the-road, but it does have some state history behind it (has to do with their fight to become a state) so it gets some points for that
kansas: âad astra per asperaâ, trans. âto the stars through difficulties.â 9/10, cool, connected to what they said about the state in its history, seemingly unreligious. point docked for it going to kansas and therefore being a bit pretentious more than anything
kentucky: âdeo graham habeamusâ, trans. âlet us be grateful to Godâ AND âunited we stand, divided we fall.â 0/10, why do they get TWO??? first one is religious, and the second one is unoriginal. if it were just the second one i would give it the benefit of the doubt but come on
louisiana: âunion, justice, and confidence.â 4/10, i donât think louisiana should be confident about anything but i do appreciate self-love
maine: âdirigoâ, trans. âi direct.â 5/10, more than california because itâs slightly less confusing but i really donât know what they mean by this
maryland: âfatti maschi, parole femmineâ, trans. âstrong deeds, gentle words.â 9/10, i fucking love this. i know very little of maryland so iâll let them have this
massachusetts: âense petit placidam sub libertate quietemâ, trans. âby the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty.â 8/10, itâs sick as fuck but massachusetts is a bit pretentious just taking this shit from someone else with no reason
michigan: âsi quaeris peninsulam amoenam circumspiceâ, trans. âif you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you.â 9/10, this fucks. i love a motto dedicated just to the land. point docked because i do not feel the way this way when in michigan
minnesota: âlâĂ©toile du nordâ, trans. âthe star of the north.â 7/10, cool that it acknowledges minnesota being the ânorthstar stateâ since itâs the northernmost state, but i donât like that itâs in french. also kind of pretentious of us tbh
mississippi: âvirtute et armisâ, trans. âby valor and arms.â 2/10, cool if youâre a 7-year-old boy. if itâs based off the motto of lord gray de wilton they shouldâve kept it âi trust in virtue not armsâ
missouri: there are way too many states. anyway. âsalus populi suprema lex estoâ, trans. âthe welfare of the people is the highest law.â 10/10, period!! i donât think missouri stands by this tho
montana: âoro y plataâ, trans. âgold and silver.â 6/10, i have to give it points for being a physical description of the state and also being historical (big mining state), but they really put all their coins in one bag with this one
nebraska: âequality before the law.â 10/10, apparently reflects nebraskaâs âwillingness to extend suffrage to black Americansâ so itâs good state history and i love what it stands for. keep it up nebraska (i know you wonât)
nevada: âall for our country.â 5/10, really have any historical importance, and itâs a bit vague. what is it that youâre doing for âour country?â what does âallâ imply? really think they just threw something together last minute
new hampshire: âlive free or die.â 9/10, sick as fuck and grounded in history. iconic is an overused word, but i gotta say this is iconic. metal as hell. point docked because itâs too associated with some weird political standings now
new jersey: âliberty and prosperity.â 6/10, boring as hell but sure. whatever
new mexico: âcrescit eundoâ, trans. âit grows as it goes.â 9/10, quote taken from a poem which is cool and i love that it makes me think of dick :)
new york: âexcelsior!â, trans. âever upward!â AND âe pluribus unumâ, trans. âout of many, oneâ (as of 2020). 6/10, i was with kinda with them on the first one even though it seems like something they added last minute because i liked the excitement in it but the second one is kind of dumb⊠yeah, i guess you are one of many. feels like an obvious statement they didnât need to add on in 2020
north carolina: âesse quam videriâ, trans. âto be, rather than to seem.â 4/10, i think itâs okay but i donât know what it has to do with north carolina
north dakota: âliberty and union, now and forever, one and inseparable.â 6/10, cool reference to U.S. history but itâs kind of a mouthful and i donât think i would be able to memorize it
ohio: âwith God, all things are possible.â 1/10, one point given because it makes me think of the iasip quote
oklahoma: âlabor omnia vincitâ, trans. âhard work conquers all things.â 4/10, once again i like that itâs a reference, but i have no clue what oklahoma has to do with this motto
oregon: âalis volat propriisâ, trans. âshe flies with her own wings.â 7/10, âsheâ being oregonâs âindependent spirit.â i think itâs a sick ass motto but oregon is thinkin of themselves too highly here
pennsylvania: âvirtue, liberty, and independence.â 4/10, the lack of originality is getting tiring but i guess it shows some values or something
rhode island: âhope.â 2/10, are you even trying? come on
south carolina: âdum spiro speroâ, trans. âwhile i breathe, i hope.â 6/10, itâs inspiring i guess but i seriously do not understand why this would be associated with south carolina. i swear iâm not an advertising major or anything
south dakota: âunder God the people rule.â 0/10, we are OBSESSED with this guy here. WHY do we need states to be associated with religion
tennesse: âagriculture and commerce.â weâre coming to the very simple mottos now. 4/10, i feel itâs redundant but i guess it meant something to them when they made it
texas: âfriendship.â 10/10, itâs basic and unoriginal but itâs so fucking funny that i have to give this one to them. i do NOT think of friendship when i think of texas
utah: âindustry.â 1/10, what the hell is this? one point for not being religious but what the fuck
vermont: âstella quarta decima fulgeatâ, trans. âmay the 14th star shine brightâ AND âfreedom and unity.â 7/10, i like the first one because it directly references vermont but the second one is just unoriginal and sad. why have a motto if itâs gonna be like that
virginia: âsic semper tyrannisâ, trans. âthus always to tyrants.â 7/10, sick as hell. three points deducted because it once again has nothing to do with virginia, but it really is a sick ass motto
washington: (unofficial) âal-kiâ, trans. âbye and bye.â 10/10, very specifically refers to the history of washington, which was first called ânew york alkiâ
west virginia: âmontani semper liberiâ, trans. âmountaineers are always free.â 9/10, i want to dislike this because it feels so unrelated, but i love it. i love what you have going on here, west virginia
wisconsin: âforward.â 1/10, seriously?
wyoming: âequal rights.â 9/10, similar to nebraska, this motto came about because wyoming was the first state to grant women the right to vote. apparently this was because granting women the right to vote would make them have enough voting citizens to be granted statehood though, so point deducted for that

This whole BS actorâs/writerâs guild situation is only giving me more fuel to hyperfixate on Survivor seasons from early 2000s.
Homies, seriously, hit up your autistic buddies. Weâve been hypfixating on the same shows for *decades* we have some great FINISHED series for you to watch while Hollywood rightfully suffers for their misdeeds of underpaying their performers. Let them suffer a dry spell while you go on a historical journey.Â
For example, my hyperfixation comfort shows:
FrasierÂ
Stargate SG-1
Stargate: AtlantisÂ
Star Trek
Star Trek: TNG
Star Trek: DS9
The Witcher (Season 1 ONLY)Â
Survivor Seasons 1-10Â
The MagiciansÂ
Eureka
Farscape
Wynona Earp
Lost GirlÂ
MerlinÂ
Young Justice
Justice League: Unlimited
GargoylesÂ
Once Upon a Time (watch season 7 at your own peril)Â
Once Upon a Time in Wonderland
She-Ra and The Princesses of PowerÂ
Avatar The Last Airbender
The Legend of KorraÂ
Dark Matter (missing a final season but the creators kindly exposed their planned ending online)Â
Honorable Mention: The Expanse (Donât yell at me I know I should watch it, Iâm just slow and troubled)Â
AND PROBABLY MORE IâM FORGETTING BUT THEREâS SO MUCHÂ
But seriously. Donât let Hollywood act like you donât have options. These shows are tons of fun and their writers are already paid. They canât hurt them. Donât let them think they can go on pretending things are okay right now. Remind them that we love paid actors and writers. We want stories, but only if theyâre told (and created) right.Â
HOWEVER if you need something a little more modern? Get Dropout. They have comedy shows, musical theater, game shows, and fantasy/romance/scifi/VERY CREATIVE D&D all while actually paying their creators and actors. So worth it.Â
No TV show or movie I will ever watch is worth starving a writer from their home.

Hey man, I just wanted to say two things. First, don't let the angry anon asks get you down. I can't say for certain, but I think the majority of the community is in your corner about Hi-Evo. I'm severely disappointed with what we've gotten and we deserve better. Secondly, I think you're a great author and I hope you get published one day. I'd definitely read your work if I could. Incidentally, what were some of your literary influences while writing the Historical series?
Itâs great to hear you say that. :) I knew there were others who thought the same as me, but itâs always reassuring to get asks and messages telling me Iâm not alone in the matter. And yes, we deserved so much better. Bones just missed a prime opportunity with Hi-Evolution, and thinking about it just makes me beyond sad.
Thank you very much! Publishing efforts are on hold right now until Iâm more settled into my new job, but rest assured that Iâm not giving up. One way or another, all of these stories will be published, and you all will be the first to hear about it. :)
As for literary influences of the Historicals, there were quite a few. A lot of what I wrote was based on soldiersâ memoirs and journals during World War II, both from the Axis and Allied sides. The accounts of the Russian war correspondent Vassily Grossman were particularly insightful, as was his novel Life and Fate. Itâs a great book set during the Battle of Stalingrad, and one I highly recommend reading.
There were some other fictional sources I used to help my writing as well. All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque was rather seminal in crafting the story, and especially in how he pushed his anti-war, pacifistic message. I admire Remarqueâs work because he showed the horror of war by just describing what soldiers saw and felt rather than just tell us âwar is badâ straight up. Itâs a subtle form of storytelling I wish more books (and anime) employed.
David McCulloughâs writings have also been a big influence, since he looks at history as the experiences of people rather than massive events. If you want an example of how to write engaging nonfiction, definitely check out his biographies. I touched on this in a blog I wrote on wordpress, but McCullough understands how history is about people. Thatâs key to making history relatable.
I could easily write more about my influences, but Iâd be here all night. XD

What's wrong with Ru Paul?
There's several problems with RuPaul, the main issue people tend to have is the things he's said about women and trans people, but there's some other stuff too. Buckle up, this is a long one.
For a long time, people who were AFAB couldn't compete on Drag Race. There have been AFAB queens on the show now, but not until 2021 so we've only gotten 2 so far in the form of Gottmik, a trans man on US13, and Victoria Scone, a cis woman on UK3. Some people compare Drag Race to Dragula, which has had 3 AFAB competitors in only 4 seasons, while Drag Race has been running since 2009 and there have been international spinoffs for more than 7 countries, which totals to 28 seasons (not even counting France or the Philippines, for which we haven't gotten a cast announcement yet, or All Stars, which is all queens we've seen before).
For a while, we didn't know if we would ever get an AFAB queen on Drag Race bc RuPaul had said that it stops being "punk rock" when a drag queen is AFAB bc it's socially acceptable for someone perceived as a woman to put on makeup and a dress, and that real women just look like drag queens anyway. He's also said that drag queens don't look like real women, trying to have it both ways. Every AFAB queen I know of intentionally makes herself look not like a real woman (e.g. Mik's white face paint, Victoria's giant costumes), and wouldn't it be "punk rock" for an AFAB person to do something that society thinks is only for cis men/AMAB people??
RuPaul has said that the difference between a trans woman and a drag queen is thousands of dollars and a plastic surgeon, and that trans women were only allowed to compete on Drag Race if they hadn't had any transition-related surgeries like FFS or SRS bc then it would be like athletes using performance-enhancing drugs. The problem with this is that it's equating something that would improve someone's mental health to something that would make someone better at a sport, and also the fact that they DO allow queens on Drag Race to get things done to improve their drag, so long as they aren't part of a transition, like Eureka getting lip filler, Trixie getting veneers, or Trinity the Tuck getting surgery to exaggerate her hips.
Trans queens tend to be discouraged from discussing their genders on the show, though this problem also exists in versions of Drag Race where RuPaul isn't heavily involved. I don't know how true this is, but I've heard that Peppermint on US9 was asked to butch it up so she looked more like a feminine man, and that Kylie Sonique Love wasn't allowed to discuss being trans on US2 until the reunion at the end of the season.
The funniest part of all this is that one time when he tried to walk back one of his transphobic statements by tweeting about how he only casts for "charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent" along with a green and yellow artwork titled "Train Landscape"... so he would've Googled "trains flag" and wouldn't have double-checked to be sure whether or not it's actually the trans flag.
Outside of his sexism and transphobia, there's also the issue of racism on Down Under, a version of Drag Race where Ru is the host. The US show is usually quite racially diverse, but Down Under only had 2 POC out of 10 queens, both POC were early outs, and when production wanted to bring back one of the first 3 eliminated queens, they picked the white girl over the Native Australian girl or the Fijian girl (not at all Art Simone's fault, but suspicious on production's part that she was chosen instead of Jojo Zaho or Coco Jumbo). The winner of the season ended up being a default win bc of issues created by production. Kita Mean is lovely and I think she's a suitable winner, but it's frustrating that the options were Art, who fans felt had been carried to the top 4 by production; Karen From Finance, who used to collect blackface dolls and had a tattoo (that's now thankfully covered) of one of the dolls; Scarlet Adams, who has a history of doing multiple types of raceface; and Kita, who was the only person in the top 4 who could have been crowned without huge backlash. The show called out Scarlet's raceface, but only after Coco and Jojo were no longer there, and RuPaul forgave her on behalf of all the groups she imitated, even though Ru is just one black person and also isn't part of the other groups Scarlet did raceface of, like Native Australian people. Ru claims to have the final say in every elimination, and Scarlet was allowed to compete until the very end when many fans think she should have been disqualified. An Australian YouTuber called Rifenstine did a video talking about the mess that was Down Under.
Another problem is that RuPaul and Drag Race hold people's careers in their hands. Many queens who go on the show end up having to suck up to RuPaul if they want to maintain that level of fame. Ru recently made a song making fun of queens who "blame it on the edit" aka they got unfavourable edits on Drag Race and have publicly said bad things about the show. Unfavourable edits can have a huge impact on someone's career and Jaremi Carey (formerly Phi Phi O'Hara) still gets nasty messages to this day over a TV appearance he did a decade ago where he was given a villain edit.
There's also a whole thing about how RuPaul and his husband have a ranch in Wyoming where companies frack for oil, though I'm not sure whether consent is required for fracking on their ranch or if RuPaul is paid for it. Someone else would know more about this than I do.

Today Is Wingman Day, Ch. 1
Fandom: Red Velvet Pairing: WenJoy Words: 5.4k+ Rating: T Summary: Joy downloads Tinder. Wendy suffers through the trials and tribulations of being Joy's wingwoman for one dayâwhile juggling some complicated feelings. Good thing Yeri's there to help them both in her own way. Links: ao3 | aff
Sooyoung leaned forward across the table. âSo, listenâŠâ she said, voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, a sly smile tugging on her lips.  The hairs on Seungwanâs arms stood up.  A smile like that from Sooyoung spelled troubleâ
âIâm thinking of hooking up with a girl.â
âand bad ideas.
There were few things Seungwan hated more than her sleep cycle getting cut short on a Saturday morning right after midterms.
As a university student smack dab in the middle of her senior year, tackling five whole courses and several extracurriculars that kept her up well into the early a.m.âs, Seungwan cherished every minute of sleep she could get. Admittedly, it was her own fault for being overambitious. Â But after spending week after week downing espresso shots just to get through morning lectures, substituting a good nightâs rest for caffeinated blood coursing through her veins, any weekend where she could finally sleep in was a luxury. A godsent gift. Â And finally, after getting through the midterm exam week, she could finally get the relaxation she deserved.
The incessant vibrations of her phone against the bedside table, however, said fuck you, Seungwan.
Seungwan groaned, rolling over to her side to reach for her phone. Â Who the hell was texting her a storm on a weekend morning? Â A precious weekend morning! Â She slapped her hands blindly on the table until she found the device, bringing it over to her face so she could read the offending name on the screen.
Park Sooyoung, 7:52 a.m.
She sat up immediately, blinking away the blurriness from her eyes as her vision adjusted to read the words in the slew of texts.
Hey.
Hey.
Hey.
Seungwan-unnie.
I need you.
Meet me at Café Eureka.
I have something to tell you.
Important news.
Cold dread crawled down Seungwanâs spine as she scanned the messages. Â Any traces of her sleep-induced haze scattered like ashes in the wind. Â It was never a good sign when Sooyoung sent her texts like theseâfull of urgency yet aggravatingly vague. Â Was it good news? Â Bad? Â Seungwan had never been able to get a straight answer, and sheâd long given up trying. Â Any attempts for elaboration through text were always met with increasingly evasive non-answers, each one more cryptic than the last. Â Coming from a typically blunt girl like Sooyoung, though, it was always a cause for alarm.
At least, it was cause for alarm, until Seungwan had figured out that Sooyoung just liked to mess with her.
See, historically, âimportant newsâ from Sooyoung meant one of two things:
1.    either she really did have something important to shareâlike when she had just broken up with Sungjae and needed to be comforted, or
2.    she was just baiting Seungwan with the fear that there was something hypothetically wrongâonly to trick her into coming over to her apartment, trapping her into doing something as inane as figuring out which color dress looked better on her.
So yes, lately âimportant newsâ was a dice roll. Â Over time, alarm over Sooyoungâs wellbeing had turned into wariness; wariness, into dread. Â Dread of a flagrant waste of time. Â Her best friend was a mystery at times, and Seungwan never knew which Sooyoung she was going to get on any given day. Â Excitable Sooyoung? Â Sad Sooyoung? Trickster Sooyoung? Â
Well, there was only one way to find out.
Seungwan sighed as she uncovered herself from the nest of her warm, plush blankets, resigning herself to another sleepless day and to Sooyoungâs whimsâwhatever they were.
Iâll be there in a few, she texted back.
-
For a day that was nearing the tail end of March, the weather outside was still surprisingly wintry: frozen dew clinging onto bladed grass, flowers that were normally in full bloom at this point only just shy of budding. Â Seungwan shivered as she stepped out of the dormitory, the chill of the cold spring air seeping through her white cardigan and into her skin. Â Maybe waltzing out in jean shorts wasnât such a good idea. Â Out of all the advice sheâd taken from Sooyoung, âdress for the weather you wantâ (which was her go-to excuse for wearing skimpy clothing even in frigid temperatures) was probably the worst.
Not many other students were out and about at this time of day on a weekend. Especially not on a weekend after exams. Â There was still the occasional ever-so-disciplined jogger looking to knock out their daily run earlyâSooyoung was one of them, which was why she was always up so earlyâbut the vast majority of the student populace was probably enjoying their time off. Doing things that Seungwan sorely wished she could also experience: lazing around in bed, drinking a cup of hot chocolate, recovering from a hangover after celebrating the freedom from the brutal crunch of midterm studying.
While Seungwan didnât regret her impulse decision to minor in music on top of being a biology major, the bone-deep exhaustion after a strenuous school week was⊠something else.  She missed having leisure time.  A life outside of school dedicated to hobbies.  Having time to spend with friends.  Partying.
Dating mightâve been nice, too, Seungwan thought as she passed by a couple holding hands, bundled up in hooded bubble jackets. Â They were strolling peacefully along the tree-lined paths that led to the city, pausing to take photos together against the sunrise-tinged lake. Â Stopping to smell the flowers. Â Poking each otherâs cheeks. Â Laughing. Â Living in the moment as if they had all the time in the world.
It reminded her of how Sooyoung had been, back when she was with Sungjae. Â Carefree and happy. Â But here she was, forever single and without a lick of romantic experience. Â Oh, how Seungwan wished she were one of the normal students sometimes.
âUnnie, good morning!â called out a voice that sounded entirely too cheery for a Saturday morning. Â âWait up!â
Seungwanâs shoulders tensed as she turned to see Yerim running to catch up to her, guitar case slung over her shoulder. Â Kim Yerim. Resident prankster. Â Sooyoungâs partner in crime.
There was a wide grin on her face as Yerim fell into step with her. Despite feeling wary toward her and cranky at being woken up early, Seungwan couldnât help but return the smile. Yerimâs enthusiasm was infectious like that. Â On good days, it made the semester a little more bearable when they shared their music composition class together; on bad ones, it foreboded a future of trouble because she was a little shit sometimes. Â Like Sooyoung, Yerim was someone who always knew how to keep her on her toes. Â A frightening pair, those two. Â Especially when they put their minds together.
Even so, it was impossible not to have a soft spot for her.
âYerimâhey!â Â Seungwan pulled her in, wrapping her arm over her shoulder as they walked side by side. Â Mostly, she just wanted to steal her body heat. Â âYouâre going to band practice? Â You have a performance tonight at the new bar, right? What was it calledâTiki Island?â
âYup!â Â Yerim nodded, waving her sheet music in front of Seungwanâs face. Â âAlso, weâre finally going to try out that new tune that you helped me with earlier this week and see how it goes. Â I think Seulgi-unnie is going to love it. Â Thanks for that, by the way.â
âNo problem, kiddo.â Â Seungwan gave her a pat on the head. Â âYou had great melodyâjust needed some polishing on the harmonies. Â You did say youâd pay me back anyway.â
âOf course, unnie. Â Iâm a woman of my word,â Yerim said. Â With her big round eyes and angelic face, anyone else who didnât know her as well wouldâve been fooled into trusting the innocent smile that graced her lips. Â But years of being swindled by that very smile had taught Seungwan better.
She raised her eyebrows. Â âUh huh. Sure. Â The most reliable person I know, really.â
âYou headed to CafĂ© Eureka?â Yerim asked, pointedly ignoring Seungwanâs jibe.
âYeah, I am.  Did you want anything?  I could get you something toâwait.â  Seungwan narrowed her eyes suspiciously.  At second glance, the smile on Yerimâs face had turned more⊠smug than anything.  Like she was privy to a secret that Seungwan wasnât. âHow did you know?  Sooyoung told you something, didnât she?â
âAh.â Â Yerimâs shoulders stiffened under her hold. Â Before Seungwan could react to the obvious tell, she was already ducking out of her arm and booking it. Â âGotta jet!â she exclaimed. Â âIâll see you around, unnie!â
âHey!â Seungwan yelled after her, but Yerim was already several meters ahead, breaking out into a full run.
Seungwan threw her hands in the air, shaking her fist at Yerimâs disappearing figure. Â âWhy does nobody tell me anything!â
-
Seungwan felt right at home as she stepped into Café Eureka, inhaling the aroma of freshly-made syrupy waffles and the woody scent of weathered books that lined the walls of the upper floor, sighing in relief when the cozy indoor heating soaked into her freezing thighs.
CafĂ© Eureka, like any other restaurant business at the edge of the city, wasnât an overly fancy establishment, but it was her and Sooyoungâs favorite library cafĂ© to frequent.  As a hybrid breakfast diner and quiet study place, with both sections split into two floor levels to separate the diners from the students, it was a boon for struggling undergrads who needed a break from schoolwork for a convenient quick fix or vice versa.  The food was good; the staff pleasant.  Overall, it was perfect aside from the drawback of being a trek from the main campus.
Once senior year had hit, she and Sooyoung had both become super stressed university students, constantly hunched over reading thick textbooks in dusty libraries through late nights, so it was nice just relaxing at a cute lowkey joint once in a while.  Not too unruly or greasy like fast food restaurants, not too hoity-toity like those hipster coffee shops with one too many bearded baristas wearing an offensive combination of torn jeans and smartwatches.  CafĂ© Eureka was nice in that wayâjust the right balance of homey and classy: comfort foods in the form of all-day breakfast meals, along with the refinement of an academic setting.
Although a bit cheesy, it was rumored that the owners had named it âCafĂ© Eurekaâ to appeal to the student population.  A place where epiphanies were made, supposedly, from just spending time there and basking in the atmosphere.  Fresh food stimulating bright ideas, bright ideas paving way to brighter futuresâthat was something of its brand.  It was said so often by staff and clientele alike that Seungwan was surprised it wasnât made into a slogan yet.
She found Sooyoung settled at the booth in the corner of the cafĂ©âtheir usual spot that overlooked the park and waterfront outside.  The bright ambience really did help with keeping them alert during exam weeksâlots of tall glass windows, with each table partitioned by blue leather seats and tall mahogany posts framed by metal bars.  The seating arrangement was a bit reminiscent of a 1950s American diner, just without all the hustle and bustle.
From where Seungwan could see, Sooyoung was busy scrolling through her phone, eyebrows creased together in concentration. Â An untouched plate of strawberry crepes lay on the table in front of herâthe same thing she always ordered whenever they were together. Â It wasnât a surprise that she was still in her jogging outfit, but as a non-morning person Seungwan didnât often get to see her wearing it. Â She had to whistle at how modelesque Sooyoung managed to make it look, like sheâd just walked right out of a high-profile athletic brand photoshoot: fingerless gloves, hair tied into a high ponytail, tight black leggings with mesh panels, a matching sports bra that gave a wide view of the well-defined abs on her stomach. Â Even as a runner, she wasted no opportunity to show off the magnificent physique of her body.
Seungwan didnât blame her. Â The girl was chiseled like a Greek goddess, and she had every right to flaunt it. Â Especially ever since the breakup from a few months ago, Sooyoung had doubled down on working out to take her mind off of things, to spend time taking care of herself. Â The result was marvelous, of course: leaner arms, toner thighs. Â Plumper, healthier gluts. Â Even Seungwan herself was guilty of staring once in a whileâbut hey, it was a crime not to admire art, right? Â Not that sheâd ever make an obvious show of it. Â Sooyoung would never let her live that down, with that ego of hers.
It was a good sign, though, that Sooyoung was out and about instead of moping around, as she was wont to do whenever a wave of bad moods struck her. Â Like the week when sheâd split up with Sungjae, or had gotten a C on her exam. Â If sheâd been feeling alright enough to go out for a jog, that had to mean whatever she had to tell her wasnât terrible, at least.
âHey,â Seungwan greeted, slipping into the seat across from Sooyoung.
âUnnie!â Â Sooyoung lit up, placing her phone down as soon as Seungwan announced her arrival. âYou came!â
Seungwan laughed. Â Sooyoung reminded her of the puppies that she loved to take care of sometimes at the local animal rescue centerâthe bright eyes, excitable smiles. Â One and the same. Â âYes, I did, you brat,â she said, though it wasnât with as much bite as sheâd wanted. Â Then again, she couldnât stay too mad if Sooyoung seemed happy.
âBrat?â Sooyoung echoed, placing a hand to her chest in mock offense. Â âExcuse meâIâm anything but.â
âI think you demanding my time and attention before eight in the morning on a weekend constitutes as you being a brat.â
Sooyoung placed her hands on her hips and glared, bottom lip jutting out in the way that forecasted whenever she was about to summon her grossest baby-aegyo voice. Â âUnnie.â
âNo,â Seungwan said, looking away.
Protests never stopped Sooyoung, though. Â In fact, they always seemed to encourage her.
âWhy donât you ever want to spend time with me anymore?â Sooyoung whined, voice rising in pitch with every word. Â âI just wanted to see you. Â Youâre so mean! Â Hmph!â She punctuated her harrumph with a shrill squawk, cheeks puffing out.
Seungwanâs mouth twisted into a scowl, cold shivers rolling down her body. Â She couldnât even stop the gagging noises that emerged from her throat. Â Sooyoung broke character at that, cackling as she pointed at the disgust undoubtedly written all over her face.
âWell, you must be in high spirits if youâre out here doing this,â Seungwan scoffed. Â âIâm guessing that âimportant newsâ isnât a bad thing this time?â
âIâll get to that later,â Sooyoung wheezed out, still recovering from her laughing fit, wiping tears from her eyes.
âLater?â Â Seungwan let out an exasperated sigh. Â Of course. âWhatââ
Sooyoung clapped her hands together. Â âFirst things first, unnie!â she exclaimed, peeking her head outside the booth and snapping her fingers. Â At her cue, the waiter walked over to their booth, a platter full of food on his hands.
âRainbow fruit yogurt parfait for Son Seungwan-ssi?â the waiter presented, a teasing lilt to his voice.
It was Jongdaeâone of the regular morning employees who usually ended up serving them more often than not.  Being regulars at CafĂ© Eureka, he was long past just a familiar face in the establishment. He felt more like an older brother at times to the both of them, even going as far to preemptively serve them their usual orders before they could even formally request the food themselves.
He smiled as he placed the plate in front of her: an assortment of cleanly chopped fruitâwatermelon, mandarins, pineapple, kiwis, and grapesâplaced in neat rows, separated by yogurt and granola within a tall glass cup. Â Her favorite. Â She hadnât bought it in a while, though, since she was on a budget and it was expensive to order on a daily basis.
âI guess you finally have enough money now to splurge, huh?â Jongdae quipped.
âActually,â Sooyoung interjected. Â âItâs my treat for her.â
Seungwan blinked, mouth falling into an âoâ shape. Â She looked back at Sooyoung, who was already staring at her with a smug grin, elbow propped on the table as she rested her chin on her palm. Just sitting there, looking like she was so proud of herself.
âWhoa.â Â Seungwan couldnât say she wasnât impressed by Sooyoungâs thoughtfulness. Â Not that she had expected to come out completely drained after meeting up or anything, but it was nice to know that Sooyoung could still surprise her with small gestures like this.
âAre you bribing her, or something?â he asked, raising an eyebrow.
âOh, nothing like that,â Sooyoung denied, though the smirk on her face made Seungwan feel a little unsettled.
Jongdae snickered. Â âWell, Iâve got to go back to work now. Â Enjoy, girls!â he said, bowing before he left.
âThanks, oppa!â Seungwan called after him.
Sooyoung pushed the parfait closer to her, placing a spoon in her hand. Â âBone ape tit, unnie.â
âI think the phrase is âbon appĂ©titâ, but thanks.â
âAm I still a brat?â Sooyoung asked, batting her eyelashes.
Seungwan smiled despite herself. Â Maybe it was worth going out after all. Â âAside from grossly butchering the French language? Â Youâre alright, I guess,â she conceded.
âBon appĂ©tit, then,â Sooyoung said, slicing into the crepe with her fork, slathering a generous helping of cream over it.
It looked good. Â Seungwanâs mouth watered at the sight of it. Â âHey, let me have a bite of that?â she requested, opening her mouth wide.
The fork halted before it reached Sooyoungâs mouth. Â She shot her an incredulous look. Â âUnnie, you have one whole parfait in front of you. Â Youâre really going to make me sully my fork with your cooties before I even try my own crepes?â
âDonât be difficult. Â Youâre the one who pestered me to come see you. Â Besides, I havenât tried it in a while.â
âAre you sure you arenât the brat?â Sooyoung laughed, extending the mouthful of food out to Seungwan. Â âYou should be honored. Â I donât spoon feed just anyone, princess.â
Seungwanâs eyes lit up as she bit into it. Â âMm! Â No wonder why you love this so much,â she said, wiping her mouth with a napkin.
âYep! Â Well, glad to know itâs fantastic as usual.â
âIt is.â
Spooning her own parfait, Seungwan took her first bite, humming contently as the taste of kiwis and creamy Greek yogurt melted on her tongue. Â Ah, fresh fruit. Â Definitely hit the spot. Â Crepes were good, but nothing beat a helping of fresh fruit in a parfait. Â âItâs delicious. Â Thank you, Sooyoungieâyou seriously ordered this for me?â
âDuh. Â I wasnât going to drag you out here from the freezing cold in the morning for nothing.â
âWhy did you, then?â Â
Sooyoung leaned forward across the table.  âSo, listenâŠâ she said, voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, a sly smile tugging on her lips.  The hairs on Seungwanâs arms stood up.  A smile like that from Sooyoung spelled troubleâ
âIâm thinking of hooking up with a girl.â
âand bad ideas.
Seungwan whipped her head up from the parfait, mouth stopping mid-chew. Â Her eyes widened to saucers. Â âWhat.â
âIâm thinking of hooking up with a girl,â Sooyoung repeated, eyes twinkling in the way they always did whenever she took in Seungwanâs distraught expressions. Clearly, she was enjoying herself.
Seungwan set her spoon down slowly, swallowing her last bite before she irrevocably choked on it. Â Sheâd been so absorbed in eating that sheâd nearly forgotten that Sooyoung had dragged her out for a purpose. Â Right. The âimportant newsâ.
Something actually important, or just a bait?
For once, Seungwan wasnât sure which it was.
She didnât even know Sooyoung was into girls in that way. Â Sheâd been dating Sungjae for the majority of the time Seungwan had known herâa few months into their first year of schoolâso she could see why there wasnât much opportunity for Sooyoung to express interest in the fairer sex. Â Sure, Sooyoung had made a couple of comments about girls here and there that warranted a bit of eyebrow raising, but Seungwan thought that was just how she was. Â No filters and unapologetically shameless.
Like when sheâd half-jokingly considered bombing her organic chemistry exam just so she could get extra tutoring from the hot teacherâs aide, Bae Joohyun. Or when sheâd gone slack-jawed watching Seulgi, their mutual friend from Yerimâs band, dance in a well-fitted suit and remarked I can see why they call her âoppaâ. Â Or when sheâd said girl butts were more fun to look at than man buttsâand oh god, Seungwan was an idiot.
Sooyoung liked girls. Â How could she have missed it?
When she came to from her (extremely belated) revelation, Sooyoung was still staring at her expectantly. Â Right, she hadnât even answered her yet.
âUh,â Seungwan said eloquently, licking her lips to catch a stray granola bit hanging off the edge of her mouth.
âWell? Â Thoughts?â Sooyoung prompted.
What was even the proper response when your best friend simultaneously came out to you and announced she wanted to hook up with a girlâall in one breath? Â âCongratulations?â she offered.
ââCongratulationsâ is damn right!â Sooyoung asserted, slamming a palm on the table, plates rattling with the force of the thump. Â Seungwan winced, gripping her parfait glass to steady it. Â âItâs been months since Iâve broken up with Sungjae. Canât a girl treat herself?â
âTreat herself⊠to a hookup?â
Seungwan could already feel herself growing some white hairs. Â This was all coming out of left field, honestlyâSooyoung liking girls, Sooyoung wanting flings with girls. Â For all the years theyâd known each otherâever since freshman orientationâSeungwan had never thought Sooyoung as the type do anything scandalous, like hitting the clubs in hopes of engaging in one-night stands. Â Despite her outwardly flirty nature, she was a romantic at heart. Â Someone who valued stability. Â Softness. Not hedonistic passion.
âThatâs right,â Sooyoung confirmed cheekily.
âAnd this is a good ideaâhow? Â Why?â Seungwan rubbed her temple. Â Having a bomb like this dropped on her definitely was not how she envisioned spending her Saturday morning.
Sooyoung picked up her fork, finally digging into her crepe. Â She popped a strawberry into her mouth, chewing slowly as she looked out the window. Â Seungwan followed her gaze, and outside she could see the couple she passed from before, still ambling near the lake. Â She hadnât noticed earlier, but they were both women. Â Wow, she really was oblivious sometimes. Â
âYou know, I was always curious about how itâd feel like. Â Being with a girl. Â Even before I accepted that about myself.â
The tone of her voice sounded a bit more contemplative now. Â Like sheâd actually been mulling the idea over in her head, instead of tossing it out there just to throw Seungwan off balance. Maybe this was a serious matter after all.
âYou never told me,â Seungwan said, hiding the frown that tugged at her lips behind another spoonful of yogurt. Â The watermelon had turned mushy. Â Great. âThat you like girls, I mean.â
Sooyoung shrugged. Â âYeah, Iâm bi. Â I thought it was pretty obvious, unnie. Â I just didnât think it was necessary to talk about, with me dating Sungjae and all.â
Bi. Sooyoung was bi.  Seungwan felt her ears warming, hearing that out loud. She wasnât embarrassedâjust⊠caught off guard.  Yeah, that was it.  It was such a Sooyoung thing to do, confessing an important secret so casually. Flippantly, even.
âYou couldâve told me,â Seungwan grumbled, pouting.  Did Sooyoung think she was homophobic?  She wasnât!  Sooyoung knew that, too.  She had to, right?  When Yerim came out to them as a lesbian, neither of them had even batted an eyelash, accepting her with open arms.  Well, it wasnât like she was entitled to know everything about Sooyoung, even if they were best friends, but stillâŠ
âI couldâve,â Sooyoung agreed, looking back at her, laughing when she saw her face. Â âWhy so grumpy?â
âDid you think I would judge you?â Seungwan blurted out without thinking. She couldnât even keep the hurt from her voice.
Sooyoung frowned at that, sobering up instantly. Â âNo, thatâs not it.â
âThenââ
âHey,â Sooyoung said softly, reaching over to grasp Seungwanâs hand. âI know what youâre thinking when you have that look on your faceââ Seungwan wrinkled her nose. Â What look? ââbut you know I would trust you with my life, right?â
The fact that Sooyoung could read her so easily was a bit terrifying. Â Her shoulders slumped as she stared into her parfait instead of meeting Sooyoungâs gaze. Â âSorry,â she mumbled. Â âI know itâs none of my business.â
âLike I said, itâs not like that. Â I just thought itâd be more fun if you found out this way.â
Seungwan rolled her eyes, but she didnât mind when Sooyoung interlaced their fingers together. Â Her hand was warm. Â âMore fun for you, maybe,â she huffed.
âYep!â Sooyoung chirped, leaning forward to poke her cheek. Â âSo donât be such a baby, okay?â
The way Sooyoungâs finger dug into her dimple tickled, and it made her laugh as she withdrew her hand. Â Sometimes Seungwan hated that she could be placated so easily. Â âWell, I guess it was kind of funny,â she admitted, rubbing the back of her neck. Â âAnd to be honest, I shouldâve expected it.â
âYeah, well, you heterolinis can be dumb sometimes.â
âHeterolinis?â  Seungwan frowned.  She was less offended at being called dumb than baffled at Sooyoung calling her a⊠a heterolini.  Where did she even come up with that?
âYeah. Â You knowâstraight people, with their straight lives, always viewing things through their straight lenses.â
Seungwan gaped. Â She wasnât that bad, was she? Â âIâve never even had a boyfriend. Â Who knows if Iâm straight?â Â She furrowed her eyebrows, head tilting quizzically at the words that came out of her own mouth. Â Why was she even arguing? Â Sheâd barely even questioned her own sexuality before.
Sooyoung eyed her skeptically.  âGirl, the number of times Iâve caught you staring at Cha Eunwoo from the music department, thoughâŠâ
Heat rose to Seungwanâs face. Â âAnd what about it!â she protested, jabbing her spoon into the parfait and taking an angry bite out of it, munching loudly. Â âHeâs beautiful!â
âYeah, so?â Sooyoung scoffed, crossing her arms. Â âSo am I, but youâre not attracted to me.â
Seungwanâs eyes widened. Â Whoa. Sooyoung really went there. Abort, abort, abort.
âWhen did you even figure out that you were bi?â Seungwan asked instead, floundering for a change of topic.
Rather than replying, Sooyoung delicately placed her fork down on her plate, metal clacking against ceramic.  She clasped her hands together, looking out the window again.  Birds chirped outside. The front door of the café jingled with the arrival of new customers.
When Sooyoung went quiet a few seconds too long for comfort, Seungwan fidgeted in her seat, backpedaling. Â âSorryâwas that too personal?â
âItâs fine. Â I was just thinking. Â I think I always kind of knewâbut it probably only hit me a year ago or so?â
âOh, wow.â  Seungwanâs eyebrows shot to her forehead as she took in the new information.  A year ago.  That had to mean⊠ âYou were still dating Sungjae at the time?â
âYeah.â
âIs that why you two broke up?â
âNo,â Sooyoung answered immediately. Â Her lips pursed into a thin line as she swept her fingers over her hair, pushing them away from her eyes. Â âWellânot entirely. Â Yes and no. We had our differences, but I canât say it didnât factor into it. Â He didnât know, though. Â I never told him.â
âAh.â
âMhm.â
They fell into an uncomfortable silence as they went back to eating, the scrape of utensils the only noise filling the air. Â Seungwan grimaced. Â Sooyoung never went into the details of the breakup before, but Seungwan hadnât expected that to be part of the reason. Â She really had to be nosy and open up old wounds, didnât she.
When it was clear Sooyoung wasnât going to elaborate any further, Seungwan cleared her throat. Â âOh, yeah! So, anywayâabout girls. Â You wanted to try hookups?â Â She cringed as the words left her mouth. Â Hookups. Â It sounded so crass.
Sooyoung perked up, a wide grin spreading on her face as though nothing had happened, and Seungwan was thankful it was that simple to dispel the awkward atmosphere between them. Â âYeah! I installed TinderâI was just setting up my profile right before you showed up.â
âTinder?â Seungwan repeated. Â âLike, for local randos? Â Not someone from our school?â
âThatâs the point of hookups.â Â Sooyoung rolled her eyes. Â âIâm not supposed to see them again.â
Seungwan pressed her lips together as she regarded Sooyoung. Â Sooyoung, who always cried at the climax of romantic comedy movies. Â Sooyoung, who once dumped a boy she was seeing simply because her Maltese puppy, Haetnim, didnât like him. Â Sooyoung, whoâdespite having a reputation for being a flirtatious teaseâvalued the fine art of courtship. Â Late-night candlelit dinners, picnics under a blanket of stars.
âThis isnât usually like you,â Seungwan pointed out.
âYeah, maybe I just wanted to try something different. Â Something uncomplicated, no strings attached.â
âWhy not dating, though?â
âBecause Iâm probably not ready for a relationship right now? Â And also, Iâd really just like to kiss a girl.â
âOh.â Â Seungwan flushed at the mental image of Sooyoung doing just that. Â Stupidly sexy Sooyoung, kissing a girlânot for the titillation of men but for herself. Â âWow.â
âWhat is it?â Sooyoung asked. Â Seungwan didnât like the look on her faceâthe annoyingly self-satisfied smirk that suggested she knew exactly what Seungwan was thinking.
âNothing,â Seungwan said, shaking the idea from her head. Â âJust getting used to you being bi.â
âWellâŠâ Sooyoung began.  She slid out of her seat and into Seungwanâs side of the booth, a devilish sparkle in her eyes.  Her voice had turned husky.  âI think I have an idea of how to help you.â
Their hips bumped together as Sooyoung pushed her farther inside to make room for the both of them. Â She pressed in so closely that Seungwan could catch a hint of the fruity floral perfume she always wore. Â Plums and peonies. Â Of course she had to smell intoxicatingly nice even after a jog.
Seungwan tensed, fingers gripping onto the hem of her shorts.  âHelp me⊠get used to you being bi?â  Why did that sound so ominous?
âYep.â
âHow?â Â Seungwan didnât know if she liked where this was going.
Sooyoung gave her an impish, lopsided smile as she leaned in, maintaining eye contact with Seungwan the whole way even when the distance between their faces shortened to mere centimeters. Â Seungwanâs neck craned back as she strained to put space between them, head bumping against the window, and she had to hold her breath so it wouldnât mingle with Sooyoungâs. Â Goosebumps rose on the surface of her arms at the heat radiating from the other girlâs body. It felt nice after walking in the cold for so long, but suddenly Seungwan found herself at a crossroads: uncertain if she wanted to pull her closer for warmth or push her away for her own sanity.
Finally, after what seemed like several excruciating seconds, Sooyoung spoke.
âIâŠâ  Sooyoung licked her lips, moving in almost impossibly closeâso much so that their noses almost touched, and it took all of Seungwanâs willpower not to scream.  ââŠam going to have youââ
She jabbed a finger onto Seungwanâs chest. Â Oh, hell.
ââhelp me pick out a date!â she declared cheerfully.
Before Seungwan could even process what was happening, Sooyoung had already pulled away, slapping a couple of 10,000 won notes on the table to foot the bill, laughing and slipping out the booth with a jolly spring to her step.
Seungwan exhaled shakily once she actually had room to breathe again, feeling a cold draft of air in the absence of Sooyoungâs presence. Â âHuh?â
What?
What?
âCome on, Seungwan-unnie! Â Letâs go back to my apartment. Â I want to shower already, and we can talk more about it there!â
Rooted in place, Seungwan stared after Sooyoung as she made her way to the front of the café, unable to shake how fast her heart was pounding.
What!!!
Once her brain kicked back into gear, Seungwan rushed to scarf down one final spoonful out of her parfait before chasing after Sooyoungâcurse her and her long legs. Â She noshed on the granola, savoring every munch and crunch as though it could smother the budding realization that threatened to slip out from the tip of her tongue.
She chanced a look back at her wristwatch. Â It was only 9:17 a.m.
It was going to be a long, long day.
