31 movies 31 days (kind of)
It's that time of year again folks, where I go insane and try to watch a movie a day for the entirety of October. You may see the addendum of 'kind of' attached to this years, and that's because I've decided to be rather ambitious: I'm watching 36 movies this year. This is in part due to a Halloween party hosted by a dear friend of mine, but whatever. You're here for the list, which is as follows:
X (2022, dir. Ti West) Pearl (2022, dir. Ti West) Maxxxine (2024, dir. Ti West) Satanic Hispanics (2022, anthology/multiple) Carrie (1976, dir. Brian De Palma) Blood Relatives (2022, dir. Noah Segan) Suitable Flesh (2023, dir. Joe Lynch) It's a Wonderful Knife (2023, dir. Tyler Macintyre) One Cut of the Dead (2017, dir. Shinichirou Ueda) Audition (1999, dir. Takashi Miike) A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014, Ana Lily Amirpour) Possession (1981, dir. Andrzej Ć»uĆawski) Jennifer's Body (2009, dir. Karyn Kusama) The Lure (2015, dir. Agnieszka Smoczynska) The Craft (1996, dir. Andrew Fleming) Stopmotion (2023, dir. Robert Morgan) Werewolves Within (2021, dir. John Ruben) The People Under the Stairs (1991, dir. Wes Craven) Def By Temptation (1990, dir. James Bond III) Day Shift (2022, dir. J. J. Perry) Candyman (1992, dir. Bernard Rose) Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022, dir. Halina Reijin) The Pope's Exorcist (2023, dir. Julius Avery) The Deliverance (2024, dir. Lee Daniels) It Follows (2014, dir. David Robert Mitchell) Run Rabbit Run (2023, dir. Daina Reid) Child's Play (1988, dir. Tom Holland) Child's Play 2 (1990, dir. John Lafia) Bride of Chucky (1998, dir. Ronny Yu) Seed of Chucky (2004, dir. Don Mancini) Trick r' Treat (2007, Michael Dougherty) You're Next (2011, dir. Adam Wingard) Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006, dir. Scott Glosserman) Tucker & Dale v.s Evil (2010, dir. Eli Craig) Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008, dir. Darren Lynn Bousman) Terrifier (2016, dir. Damien Leone) Most of these are relatively new, and I haven't seen 32 of the 36 of them, but I think it's a promising lineup. Plus, I can go in and elaborate on Obvious White Director Syndrome.
I'll also be posting some con round up things from the year in the beginning of November as well, since my last con of the year is coming up mid-October. This was a really good year for horror, and I was able to have some great conversations with some really fucking cool people (my favorites being Bonnie Aarons, Felicia Rose, Rachel True, and Terrance Zdunich).
That's all for now, but I'm going to be a mite more active than normal, as I'm working on scripting for the podcast and a few fun video essays.

Wild post in general because OP implies that any Hispanic actor worth their salt would somehow turn down the opportunity to be in not just a fun movie, but a fun Robert Rodriguez movie. At that point just say you don't know who Robert Rodriguez is and keep Spy Kids out ya mouth
i still do not understand what possessed so many well-respected actors to do the spy kids movies like
did they pay really well? did you want these beautiful, terrible movies to be a blemish on your career forever?? why
antonio banderas did so many high-profile movies then in spy kids he looked like this
tony shalhoub has won multiple emmys but he did spy kids and
even fucking george clooney wtf
steve buscemi is pretty goofy but still
salma hayekâs pigtails in this wowÂ
elijah wood was the lead in a movie thatâs tied for the largest number of oscars of all time and he played a character creatively named âTHE GUYâ
sylvester stallone is like a cultural icon and he played not one but FOUR ridiculously dressed weirdos
alan cumming is the only one i can understandÂ
#like on top of the movies seeming fun in general#afaik not only is Rodriguez such a huge deal to the Hispanic community#but he seems like a generally really well liked and fun director on top of that#so like what the fuck is OP on about lmao

Okay time for the PBS Kids essay
Read it under the cut!
:readmore:
In 1968, before there was PBS Kids proper, there was Mr. Rogerâs Neighborhood. While it came several decades before the childrenâs block, it laid the foundation for the themes and values present in every facet of the networkâs history.
Mr. Roger famously hated childrenâs programming at the time. To him, it all was droll and useless. But he didnât dissuade the medium entirelyâ he saw potential. Potential that led to a few smaller television jobs, and eventually the creation of Mr. Rogerâs neighborhood.
Rogers didnât invent educational TV for children, but he did perfect it. He poured real heart and soul into probably the most sincere, heartfelt program in history.
Honestly, he could have his own essay. The more things you learn about the real man of Mr. Rogers, the more youâll like him.
Anyway, the biggest thing that makes PBS different is the fact that it earns money through grants, fundraisers, and private donorsâ not through sponsorships and merchandise sales. This way, PBS Kids can push programming that it feels is important, rather than programming that merely sells well.
This also means PBS is less afraid of pushing social boundaries. Money doesnât go away when their shows become subjects of debateâ and Mr. Rogers took full advantage of this.
For context, this was 1969. The Jim Crow era had just barely, barely ended. Pool segregation was still very much legal.
youtube
Mr. Rogers sharing a pool and a towel with the Black Mr. Clemmons was a pretty big deal at the timeâ especially on a show made for children.
Rogers was far from the untouchable sacred cow of today. When he was alive, he had a large number of detractors. Letâs just say that scene didnât fly nicely by everyone.
Just one year after the debut of Mr. Rogerâs came Sesame Street.
While Mr. Rogerâs was made for all children, Sesame Street had the explicit goal of supplementing the education of underserved communitiesâ especially inner-city Black (and later Latino) children.
While it was made to be accessible to children of all races and income levels, they definitely went the extra mile to make it something special for inner-city Black and Brown kids. (Why do you think it itâs âSesame Streetâ and not âSesame Cul-de-Sacâ?)
At the time, a wholesome, sweet show set in a brownstone street was practically unheard of.
Jon Stone, the casting director, deliberately sought to make the cast as rich with color as he possibly could, bringing on a huge amount of Black talent such as Loretta Long, Matt Robinson, and Kevin Clash, as well as featuring Black celebrities as guest stars. Later, the show would expand its horizons, bringing on actors from Latino, Asian, Native American, and many more backgrounds.
White actors were and still are a minority on show.
In addition to letters and numbers, the purpose of Sesame Street is clear: make kids of color know that theyâre smart, beautiful, and loved.
youtube
It doesnât get more explicit than this.
I want to point out this comment because itâs funny
Youâre telling me this bitch isnât Hispanic???
Anyway, these two were followed up by Reading Rainbow in 1983. And guess what?
Thatâs right. Non-white focus.
These three shows, (along with other, lesser-known programs like Lamb-Chops Play Along, Newtonâs Apple, and Shining Times Station (who featured Ringo Starr himself?? seriously how did that happen and why does no one talk about it) and some other nostalgic favorites like Bill Nye the Science guy, The Magic Schoolbus, Arthur, and Thomas the Tank Engine) aired on the new PTV block, which evolved into PBS Kids in 1999, bringing along Between the Lions, Dragon Tales, and many more.
Arthur is another stand-out that Iâd like to talk aboutâ it doesnât have the same racial focus of Sesame Street, but it does focus on different income levels. The characters have various housing situations, from apartments to mansions to no home at all.
It also takes cues from Sesame Street and Mr. Rogerâs in regards to talking about tough topics, though as Arthur has a slightly older target audience, it discusses things through stories rather than talking directly to the audience.
Cancer, religion, workplace discrimination, along with current (at the time) events such as 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina are all discussed on the show.
Another big focus on Arthur is disability. For once, they donât stick a character in a wheelchair and then pretend heâs not in a wheelchair. A striking number of major characters either develop or get diagnosed with physical disabilities and/or neurodivergences, such as asthma, severe food allergies, and dyslexia, and they deal with them in very realistic ways.
A handful of minor characters have more obvious disabilities, and THANK GOD they go beyond the trite messaging of âdisabled people can do everything abled people can do! everyone clap now!â
One episode in particular has the awesome message of âholy shit stop trying to help me all the timeâ itâs patronizing as fuck. I can get around just fine without you stepping on eggshells and trying to be the hero all the fucking timeâ
There are sooo many other shows I could talk about, but I canât write about them all. Iâm definitely gonna point out some more standout ones, though.
Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat
Created by Chinese-American woman Amy Tang
Dragonfly TV
Features a multitude of female and non-white scientists to foster an interest in science with kids in those groups
Maya & Miguel
One of the networkâs first Hispanic-led shows
SciGirls
I shouldnât have to explain what the goal of this one was.
Molly of Denali
When was the last time you saw a show that treated Native Americans as people? Much less a childrenâs show? 90% of the cast is Athabascan, and the show revolves around Athabascan culture, not shying away from topics like boarding schools and modern-day racism. Most of the writers are also Athabascan, and the show even has an official Gwichâin dub!
Itâs this commitment to real, authentic social justice that makes PBS Kids so much different from its competitors. Could you imagine the Paw Patrol dog looking at the camera and earnestly discussing what happened to George Floyd? I donât think soâ but Arthur talked specifically about it, Sesame Street did an hour long special about race in general, and the network itself made a 30 minute special.
youtube
Disney Jr. could never. (Other than trying to teach colorblindness, of course.)
Iâm gonna have to cut this into two parts, since I just hit the image limit

And writing this Iâm thinking, what if Charles is dating a reader whoâs a HUGE F1 fan and is so expressive when sheâs watching from the garage but like Rebecca kinda side eyes her and make her feel self conscious about how she acts, thinking to herself âam I being annoying? Loud?â Yes? No?
and the can she decide she dgaf because she's excited and showing her support to the person she loves?
That was always going to be the plan! Like home girl from the States, sheâs Latina, weâre expressive! Even my mother who canât stand soccer will be excited when itâs the World Cup! When it comes to Formula 1, personally, I am just as bad as the tifosi.
Not Your Average WAG
Pairing: Charles Leclerc x Hispanic/Latina! Reader
Summary: Y/N was not your average WAG, she does not go to the paddock in cute designer outfits, she walks into the paddock repping Ferrari. While fans LOVE her because she is just like them, a certain WAG does not.
Warning: Spelling and grammatical errors
A/N: No hate to Rebecca, I don't really have a set opinion on her like I don't know her. But sheâs going to be a major BITCH like kinda classist as most stereotypical Europeans are. AlsoâŠI MADE IT TO 1K FOLLOWERS! But this is probably not my best work so do with that as you will.
Y/N and Charles were in Y/Nâs Monaco apartment, Y/N was by the kitchen counter, eating some ice cream, while Charles was watching a movie on her couch and eating popcorn. Though Y/N and Charles have been dating for a year, Y/N has never been to a race, despite her being a big fan. She is the creative director of a fashion magazine so she doesnât have much days off and ends up watching the race on the TV she has in her office untilâŠ
âCharles, muñeco, guess what.â Y/N said, sitting next to Charles on the couch, Charles paused the movie and turned to face Y/N.
âWhat happened, Mon coeur?â Charles asked, Y/N took the popcorn bowl and placed it on the coffee table.
âMy boss gave me the okay to work remotely so Iâm able to go to the Hungarian Grand Prix with you.â Y/N said.
âReally? Thatâs great! Finally, youâll get to see me in action.â Charles said, pulling Y/N onto his lap.
âI canât wait! Iâm gonna be like Luigi in Cars, I have the Ferrari shirt you gave me, your hat, I have some things from Etsy that I could totally wear like the Forza Ferrari friendship bracelet. Oh, Iâm so excited!â Y/N hugged Charles and he giggled at his cuddly girlfriend. When Y/N stopped hugging him, Charles just stared at her with that dopey smile on his face. âWhat?â Y/N asked.
âNothing, youâre just so cute.â Charles said, kissing Y/Nâs cose, making her scrunch her nose. âWeâre going to Hungary tomorrow, you might wanna pack now.â Charles taps her thigh.
âHelp me pack?â Y/N asked and Charles nodded, both getting up to go to her room to pick out the clothes sheâll wear this race weekend. âWait, you sure Iâll be able to stay in your hotel and everything? I mean i am going last minute.â
âOh Mon coeur, ma belle, belle petite amie, I was hoping your boss would give you the okay to work remotely so I already booked everything for us. So yes, you will be staying with me at a 5 star hotel in Budapest, beautiful view and everything.â Charles kissed Y/N âSo Iâm thinking we could go out every night, youâve only been to New York and Monaco, so we are going sightseeing in Hungary.â Charles said, going into Y/Nâs closet and start picking out what he would like to see his girlfriend wearing. Charles placed everything on her bed.
Y/N observed the outfits Charles picked out. âWow, Charles, love the outfits, but you are such a guy, the yellow sundress?â
âYou look so cute in it, though! Come on, mon coeur, you look amazing in these outfits and this way, I get to show up how beautiful my girlfriend is.â Charles said, kissing Y/N.
âAlright, itâs fine. Iâll just wear your hoodie on the plane with my jeans.â Y/N said.
âAnd youâll still be the prettiest girl on that plane ever.â Charles said.
âThank you.â Y/N said.
They landed in Budapest and Charles drove them to their hotel. Y/N was in awe of everything since she has never been to another European country before. When they got into their hotel room, Charles told Y/N to change into one of her cute outfits because they were going to meet Carlos and Rebecca at the hotel restaurant. Y/N came out with the first outfit.
âHow do I look?â Y/N asked
âYou look beautiful, Mon coeur.â Charles said, stepping closer to kiss her and twirled her around. âYou ready to meet them?â
âYes, what, should I do my hair? I think itâs messy from the plane ride,â Y/N said
âMon coeur, donât panic, it looks fine, but if you want to do your hair, may I suggest a half up half down ponytail with the white bow?â Charles asked.
âMuñeco, why do you like it when I wear bows?â Y/N asked.
âBecause it makes you look so cute.â Charles kissed her.
âFine, Iâll do it.â Y/N did her hair and the two walked down to the restaurant. Carlos was the first one to stand up from the table to say hello to Charles and Y/N.
âCarlos, this is my girlfriend, Y/N.â Charles introduced them, Carlos and Y/N greeted each other with a kiss on the cheek.
âSo nice to meet you, Charles talks about you constantly.â Carlos says and Charles blushes. âBut hereâs our table. Rebecca, this is Charlesâs girlfriend, Y/N.â
âItâs so nice to meet you.â Y/N said.
âNice to meet you too.â Rebecca said with a tight smile. âSo Y/N, have you ever been to Budapest?
âNo, this is my first time. Iâve only been to (the state your from or New York), (where your parents are from), and Monaco, obviously.â Y/N laughed off but she saw Rebecca make a face so she took a sip of water that was on the table. Donât know why sheâs judging when her name is literally a character from Full House.
âSo Y/N, Charles tells me your a fan.â Carlos said and Y/N immediately became more comfortable, which Charles noticed immediately.
âYes, Iâm a huge fan. Ive always been a fan of Sebastian Vettel so when he went to Ferrari, I obviously went with him. But when he left, I stayed a Ferrari fan for you and Charles and damn, being a Ferrari fan is not easy.â Y/N said causing Charles and Carlos to laugh because itâs true, Rebecca didnât react.
âYou must be pretty excited to experience your race.â Carlos said.
âOh, this is your first race?â Rebecca asked. âThatâs a surprise considering youâre such a huge F1 fan.â She emphasized the word huge.
Lunch continued and when they finished, Charles and Y/N went to their hotel room.
âI think that went well.â Charles said.
âAre you kidding? Rebecca hates me.â Y/N said.
âShe doesnât hate you, she seemed very interested in getting to know you, asking you all those questions.â Charles said,
âMuñeco, i know youâre not a girl but donât be such a guy, you didnât see the faces she was making when I would talk. Itâs like she hated to hear me talk.â Y/N said
âWell, Mon coeur, you two are going to spending a lot of time together this weekend.â Charles said.
âWell I know that but like what do we talk about? Because it became pretty clear I canât talk about F1.â Y/N said.
âYouâll figure it out, bĂ©bĂ©.â Charles said, kissing her.
The next 2 days were difficult for Y/N to say the least. On media day, she walked into the paddock with Charles, wearing a CL16 Ferrari jersey, black shorts, platform vans, and a CL16 Ferrari hat with pins she bought from Etsy.
âYou look great.â Charles said, kissing her. âIâm going to the MainStage for some questions, you can walk around, try to get along with Rebecca.â Charles said.
âOkay, have fun.â Y/N said. She then starts walking around, she spotted Kika, who she has met on double dates with charles and Pierre, she was wearing a sundress. Kika then spotted Y/N.
âY/N! Hey, I canât believe youâre here, oh my gosh, you look so cute.â Kika said, hugging her, kissing her cheek.
âMe? You look amazing, I mean obviously, youâre an off duty model.â Y/N said laughing, Kika giggled as well.
âI gotta go with Pierre but Iâll call you.â Kika left and Y/N saw Rebecca wearing navy pants with a matching vest. She saw Y/N decked out in Ferrari and smiled
âWow, if I didnât know you, Iâd think you were a crazed fan.â Rebecca said. Y/N didnât react but kept walking around, hoping to run into Lily.
The rest of media day and Friday, Y/N tries to make conversation with Rebecca, she doesnât really cooperate, Y/N gave up talking to her. It was now the qualifying session, Y/N and Rebecca were watching in the hospitality. Y/N saw that there were 3 minutes left in Q1 and Charles was a driver at risk.
âNo no no no no no, come on, Charles.â Y/N was lowkey stressing but then Charles made it to 3rd in the last minute. âYes!! Letâs go!â Y/N cheered, standing up from the couch. The rest of the quali sessions were like that, Y/N stressing whenever Carlos or Charles were drivers at risk and in the bottom 5. Y/N was beyond happy when Ferrari made 3 and 4, however, she noticed Rebecca side eyeing her whenever she was cheering, she tried to tone it down a little but she was happy for Charles because after Monaco, he wasnât doing that well.
When Charles finished the interviews after quali, he entered the hospitality and sat next to Y/N on the couch.
âWhat did you think?â Charles asked.
âIâm so proud of you, you did so well.â Y/N said, hugging him.
âLetâs go to the hotel, change, and weâll go out to eat?â Charles asked.
âYeah, that sounds good.â Y/N said. They went to the car, the ride was pretty quiet until.. âAm I annoying?â
âWhat do you mean âannoyingâ, Mon ange?â Charles asked.
âExactly what Iâm asking, am I annoying? Are there days where Iâm talking and youâre thinking âwill she ever shut the fuck up?â or not, muñeco?â Y/N asked.
âNever, Mon coeur, I never thought you were annoying. Why are you asking? Did something happen with Rebecca again?â Charles asked.
âIâm telling you, she doesnât like me. She keeps making faces when Iâm cheering. Like sorry for being excited that my boyfriend moved up from being a driver at risk, I like F1, I was practically raised with the sport, and she even judged me for wearing your merch.â Y/N said pouting, Charles felt bad, her first race weekend should have been a great experience.
âDonât pay mind to her, Mon coeur. Tomorrow is the race, I hope to place on the podium, and hopefully Iâll get to see you in Ferrari merch.â Charles said.
âYeah.â Y/N said.
It was race day! Sadly, instead of wearing her Ferrari merch, she wore the fifth outfit to try to fit it with Rebecca. Charles saw her doing her hair, kinda disappointed that she wasnât wearing Ferrari.
âI thought that outfit was for dinner.â Charles said.
âWell this way we could go to dinner right after the race.â Y/N said, Charles still looked at her. âI know what youâre thinking, muñeco.â
âYou donât have to change, you know.â Charles said. âYou wonât really see her much next season. If youâre coming to more races, I mean.â
âI know, but I just wanna see if sheâll treat me a little better.â Y/N said, however, Rebecca stayed the same. Both were in the hospitality watching the race, Y/N was pacing because, surprise surprise, Charles had engine trouble.
âY/N, stop pacing, geez.â Rebecca said and Y/N stopped and looked at her.
âI have had it with you. I donât know what your problem is with me, but I am done with your judge faces. You donât want to hear me or someone else talk about the race or express excitement when my boyfriend or someone elseâs favorite driver is doing well, then donât come to races.â Y/N expressed. Rebecca looked shocked.
âYouâre right, Iâm sorry.â Rebecca said.
âGood, now hopefully Charles will move up from P7 to podium at least.â Y/N said. She expressed emotion as she usually does and not a single reaction from Rebecca, so much better than before. Charles got P2, Y/N went to the podium celebration, and once Charles got down from the podium, he kissed Y/N, champagne flavored kisses, of course. âSo proud of you, muñeco.â
âYeah? You watched everything?â Charles asked.
âOf course, your best race yet.â Y/N said, they kissed again and went to the drivers room.
The End
Hope yâall liked it! So Iâm thinking for Just An Inchident, which if you donât know, will be an F1 Band AU
I wonât be using Y/N BUT youâll get your own nickname so you could read for either members of the band (Carlos, Charles, Lando, Lewis, and George/Max). Comment which nickname should be for which band member and that nickname would be strictly used by them ONLY

The Best News of Last Week - November 28, 2023
đ - Why did Fiona the sheep become a mountaineer? She was tired of the "baa-d" jokes at sea level!
1. Pope Francis dines with transgender women for Vatican luncheon
Pope Francis hosted a group of transgender women â many of whom are sex workers or migrants from Latin America â to a Vatican luncheon for the Catholic Church's "World Day of the Poor" last week.
The pontiff and the transgender women have formed a close relationship since the pope came to their aid during the COVID-19 pandemic, when they were unable to work. Now, they meet monthly for VIP visits with the pope and receive medicine, money and shampoo any day, according to The Associated Press.
2. New York just installed its first offshore wind turbine
The first wind turbine installation at South Fork Wind, New York Stateâs first offshore wind farm, is complete.
The 130-megawatt (MW) South Fork Wind will be the USâs first completed utility-scale wind farm in federal waters.
3. Anonymous businessman donates $800k to struggling food bank
But this Thanksgiving, a longtime prayer of food bank leaders was finally answered: an anonymous benefactor donated the full $800,000 they needed to move out of a facility they've long outgrown. That benefactor, however, preferred to stay anonymous.
"Very private company, really don't want attention," said Debbie Christian, executive director of the Auburn Food Bank. "It's a goodhearted person that just wants to see the work here continue, wants to see it expand."
4. Empowering woman saving hopes and mental health of suffering Ukrainian kids
Kenza Hadij-Brahim is at the forefront of promoting Circle of Toys
Hadj-Brahim is helping to launch the Circle of Toys initiative. A project that provides Ukrainian children in need of some normality with preloved toys. This new initiative connects people with old toys they might otherwise throw away, with Ukrainian families in need who want to provide some comfort to their children in this distressing time.
Find Refuge said : âThe endeavour is driven by a sincere purpose: spark joy, foster play, and bring a hint of normalcy back to the young lives in Ukraine.â
5. TWO LOST CITIES HIDDEN FOR CENTURIES WERE JUST DISCOVERED IN BOLIVIA
Researchers have found these areas not only housed structures and pyramids but it has been uncovered that there were advanced irrigation systems, earthworks, large towns, causeways, and canals that cover miles.
Dr. Heiko PrĂŒmers from the German Archaeological Institute, who was also involved in the study comments that âthis indicated a relatively dense settlement in pre-Hispanic times. Our goal was to conduct basic research and trace the settlements and life there. The research sheds light on the sheer magnitude and magnificence of the civic-ceremonial centers found buried in the forestâ.
6. Sheep dubbed Fiona rescued from cliff in Scotland where she was stuck for more than 2 years
youtube
And at last, some positive climate news:
7. Three positive climate developments
Heating
When the Paris Agreement was adopted, the global reliance on fossil fuels placed the world on a path towards a 3.5C rise in temperature by 2100. Eight years on, country commitments to reduce their carbon footprints have pulled that down slightly, putting the world on a path for a 2.5C to 2.9C by the end of the century.
Peak emissions
Annual greenhouse gas emissions responsible for climate change have risen roughly nine percent since COP21, according to UN data. But the rate of the increase has slowed significantly. Recent estimates by the Climate Analytics institute find global emissions could peak by 2024
Rising renewables
Three technologiesâsolar, wind and electric vehiclesâare largely behind the improved global warming estimates since 2015.

"The New York City Council voted to ban most uses of solitary confinement in city jails Wednesday [December 20, 2023], passing the measure with enough votes to override a veto from Mayor Eric Adams.
The measure would ban the use of solitary confinement beyond four hours and during certain emergencies. That four hour period would be for "de-escalation" in situations where a detainee has caused someone else physical harm or risks doing so. The resolution would also require the city's jails to allow every person detained to spend at least 14 hours outside of their cells each day.
The bill, which had 38 co-sponsors, was passed 39 to 7. It will now go to the mayor, who can sign the bill or veto it within 30 days. If Mayor Adams vetoes the bill, it will get sent back to the council, which can override the veto with a vote from two-thirds of the members. The 39 votes for the bill today make up 76% of the 51-member council. At a press conference ahead of the vote today [December 20, 2023], Council speaker Adrienne Adams indicated the council would seek [a veto] override if necessary.
For his part, Mayor Adams has signaled he is indeed considering vetoing the bill...
The United Nations has said solitary confinement can amount to torture, and multiple studies suggest its use can have serious consequences on a person's physical and mental health, including an increased risk of PTSD, dying by suicide, and having high blood pressure.
One 2019 study found people who had spent time in solitary confinement in prison were more likely to die in the first year after their release than people who had not spent time in solitary confinement. They were especially likely to die from suicide, homicide and opioid overdose.
Black and Hispanic men have been found to be overrepresented among those placed in solitary confinement â as have gay, lesbian and bisexual people.
The resolution in New York comes amid scrutiny over deaths in the jail complex on Rikers Island. Last month, the federal government joined efforts to wrest control of the facility from the mayor, and give it to an outside authority.
In August 2021, 25-year-old Brandon Rodriguez died while in solitary confinement at Rikers. He had been in pre-trial detention at the jail for less than a week. His mother, Tamara Carter, says his death was ruled a suicide and that he was in a mental health crisis at the time of his confinement.
"I know for Brandon, he should have been put in the infirmary. He should have been seeing a psychiatrist. He should have been being watched," she said.
She says the passage of the bill feels like a form of justice for her.
"Brandon wasn't nothing. He was my son. He was an uncle. A brother. A grandson. And he's very, very missed," she told NPR. "I couldn't save my son. But if I joined this fight, maybe I could save somebody else's son." ...
New York City is not the first U.S. city to limit the use of solitary confinement in its jails, though it is the largest. In 2021, voters in Pennsylvania's Allegheny County, which includes Pittsburgh, passed a measure to restrict solitary confinement except in cases of lockdowns and emergencies. The sheriff in Illinois' Cook County, which includes Chicago, has said the Cook County jail â one of the country's largest â has also stopped using solitary confinement...
Naila Awan, the interim co-director of policy at the New York Civil Liberties Union, says that New York making this change could have larger influence across the country.
"As folks look at what New York has done, other larger jails that are not quite the size of Rikers will be able to say, 'If New York City is able to do this, then we too can implement similar programs here, that it's within our capacity and capabilities," Awan says. "And to the extent that we are able to get this implemented and folks see the success, I think we could see a real shift in the way that individuals are treated behind bars.""

A Major Tomb With Gold and Ceramic Artifacts Discovered in Panama
In an archaeological find in the El Caño Archaeological Park, located in the district of Natå, province of Coclé, in Panama, a tomb has been discovered that sheds light on the sophisticated Coclé society of pre-Hispanic times.
The tomb thought to belong to a Coclé lord and dating back to 750 CE, was found to contain a wealth of funerary offerings, including ceramic and gold artifacts.
The El Caño Archaeological Park is well-known for its necropolis of tombs and stone monoliths that date back to 700â1000 CE. American explorer Hyatt Verrill first realized the importance of the site in 1925 when he discovered ancient monoliths beside the Rio Grande River.
Linette Montenegro, National Heritage Director of the Ministry of Culture (MiCultura), explained that this discovery is part of the ongoing archeological project in the park.
The project, started in 2022 and financed through a cooperation agreement between the Ministry of Culture and the El Caño Foundation, aims to thoroughly explore Tomb No. 9 during the 2021-2024 campaigns.
The tombâs contents, consisting of 5 pectorals, 2 belts of gold beads, 4 bracelets, 2 earrings in the shape of human figures, an earring in the shape of a double crocodile, 1 necklace of circular beads, two bells, bracelets, and a skirt made with dog teeth, and a set of bone flutes, is testimony to the cultural and social wealth of the CoclĂ© society.
Dr. Julia Mayo, director of the El Caño Foundation and leader of the archaeological project since its inception in 2008, highlighted the importance of this discovery.
The collection, which probably belonged to a high-status adult male, represents a window into life and death in the Rio Grande chiefdom. The tomb, built around 750 A.D., is especially intriguing due to the presence of sacrificial attendants buried alongside the lord, indicating multiple and simultaneous burial practices.
Dr. Mayo noted that the excavation process is ongoing, making it difficult to determine the exact number of individuals buried within the tomb. She said that this type of burial, known for burying a variable number of people in the same tomb, provides valuable information about the beliefs and funerary rituals of the Cocle society.
Dr. Mayo explained that the Coclé lord was buried in a face-down position, a customary practice in this culture, often atop the remains of a woman.
El Caño Archaeological Park, built around 700 A.D. and abandoned around 1000 A.D., has yielded significant archaeological discoveries. In addition to the known monoliths, the site includes a cemetery and a ceremonial area with wooden structures. This discovery stands out for its uniqueness and the insight it provides into Cocle societyâs funerary practices.

context for people who don't know what quackity was talking about on his stream just now:
âi have been participating in many events, where unfortunately they have used me and my community. i want to distance/disassociate myself from los premios esland, since the esland awards have been controversial award. going forward, i want respect for me and my community."
but yesterday the rewind hispano was released and the person who made it, only put a small clip of quackity talking about the qsmp, later on twitter when people started complaining about it, the director posted a bunch of shady tweets and even a few screenshots of people who were upset with the lack of minecraft representation on the rewind, esp when the spanish mc community is such a big one.
that was not the only reason why people were upset, but to make it very short and brief: the name is rewind hispano, but 95% of the rewind was spanish creators from spain and the close friends of the director/cc who made it.
the director started getting angry on twitter and at the same time making fun of the qsmp community, and even, spreen (who's no longer part of the qsmp), but a big minecraft name, replied to one of his tweets, talking about how if minecraft had paid him a few bucks there would be more of it on the rewind and how his tweets were unnecessary. the guy replied to spreen back saying that his tweet was unnecessary.
but the big thing we need to get to is los eslands, which is the big award show for hispanic creators AND who also has the guy who made the rewind as one of the big names on it, so by the end of his stream quackity said that he's distancing himself and his community from the awards which already have been controversial (aka friends of the creators who run the award show winning)

"ARE you nervous?" At the cameraman's question, the girl dressed in red looked up but didnât raise her head.
âWhy?â English slid across her tongue mixed with a soft spanish accent. Her accent was not as pronounced as the other two hispanic drivers, but if you listened carefully, you could hear it clearly âDo I look nervous?â.
âNo, no, no, you look very goodâ The man was quick to shake his head at her, making her smile slyly.
âDamn right I doâ The staff laughed at the girl's self-centeredness when she moved in her seat in a more comfortable position and looked directly at the camera raising both eyebrows.
The coordinator approached the cameraman and looked at her with a slight smile "Okay, Arabella. Are you ready?â.
Releasing an affirmative 'Mmmh' she straightened her back again. She placed her right leg over her left thigh and gripped her ankle, leaning forward slightly in the chair.
"Introduce yourself and we'll proceed to the questions, then you can leave" The girl, still a little surprised to find herself there, nodded and began to play with the silver chain that hung around her neck.
It had been five months since she had signed with Ferrari to enter Formula One and she still couldn't believe it, despite being in a room sitting in front of a dark background with thousands of eyes looking at her and cameras recording her as she told her story so that came out in a Netflix documentary like she was a rock star or something.
It was fucking crazy.
âI'm Arabella Torres and Iâm a driver for Scuderia Ferrariâ She smiled without showing her teeth and looked at the woman who would ask the questions, who made a gesture encouraging her to continue âI was born in Madrid, Spain and I've always wanted to be a Formula One driver. It's been five months since I've done it and, uhm, I still canât believe this isn't a dreamâ.
âAt what age did you start driving?â.
âOfficially?â She asked and the director laughed while the interviewer nodded âAt nine years old. When I was seven I was given my first kart, well actually it was for my little brother, Oliver, who is now a motorcycle driver, but he was very young and was more interested in PokĂ©mon than cars. Anyway, I took over the go-kart and started racing 'illegally'â She made quotation marks with the index and middle fingers of both hands and laughed âI raced against other kids at the go-kart track that they put on at fairs every spring and summer in my neighborhood. Parents bet money against their childrenâ.
There were several laughs and she smiled, shrugging her shoulders.
âWhen I was nine years old, my father signed me up for the Spanish Karting Championship. I wonâ She made a face of obviousness raising both eyebrows. "After that I began to climb categories. I won all the races. I remember thinking that it was very boring because everyone was very slow and it bored me, it was very easy to win.
âIs that why they call you 'Speedy'?â The blonde, brown-eyed woman shuffled some papers she held in her hands as she crossed her leg over the other.
She pursed her lips. "A narrator from the European Championship called me that. It was in... 2012, I think? I don't know. I finished the race almost two minutes ahead of the second driver, I was the fastest by a lot. I broke the international speed record for the category. I remember I didn't know what it meant because I didn't know much English at the time and I got offended when people started calling me that, I thought they were making fun of meâ.
"Poor thing," she let out an empathetic laugh, "Of course, you were only twelve years old at the time and you had never left Spain, right?â.
âNeverâ.
"Do you like to go fast? As you said, they were very slow and you got boredâ.
"I love going fast," She took a deep breath with a big smile on her face, "I feel the need, the need for speed."
âI feel the need, the need for speed!â They all repeated the phrase in unison making her laugh.
"Okay, let's see..." She bit her lip looking for the next question, as soon as she read it she frowned but read it anyway "What is it like to be a woman in this sport? To be the only female driver in Formula One?" One?.
A snort escaped from between her full lips, âThat questionâŠ.â
"How many times have they asked you this?"
âI haven't counted them but I've only been in Formula One for five months and I'm sick of that question already.â She rubbed her forehead and licked her lips before letting out a sigh. âBut okay, I'll answer. Whateverâ she shrugged unwillingly and the others laughed making her smile âAs a child I had no friends. At school they didn't want to hang out with me because I was the weird car girl who sometimes skipped classes to go to competitions, even many of my teachers didn't treat me well for it.
The interviewer looked at her with her mouth open in amazement and Arabella nodded as if to say "It's true, believe itâ
âThey were angry with me because I didn't go to their classes because maybe I had a championship in a city 500km away and I couldn't go to school in three days. Sometimes they would ask me "Arabella, why are you wasting your time with that?" or "Arabella, you're a girl, that's for boys" and I would get angry because, who were they to tell me what I should do with my life? I thought "my parents have given me permission" and that's all that mattered to me, that my parents agreed and supported meâ She adjusted the belt of the red jumpsuit and continued âAs for Formula One, I'm not going to lie, itâs hard. Not because of the job itself but because of the people, all those people who criticize me for just being a woman and overestimate me as if I didn't know how to use a car, it's the most difficult thingâ.
âDo they send you a lot of hateful messages on social media?â
She clucked her tongue with a wry smile hanging on her lips. "And death threats. I don't give a shit thoughâ oh wait!â She ran her hand up to her mouth and wide-eyed looked around her âCan I swear?â.
The director along with her manager, sitting behind some televisions a few meters away, agreed with a laugh.
She sighed in relief and smirked, "Ah, so.....shit, I don't give a shit. People can say what they want, after all they're sitting at home and I'm the one being paid to drive a fucking Ferrariâ.
She looked away from the woman and winked at the camera, the technician blushed and inadvertently turned the angle ever so slightly.
âTell me about your family. How is your life now that you have got an eight million dollar contract? Because as far as I know, you didn't have a lot of money growing up, right?â.
She turned her gaze to her "Yes, that's true. My parents worked as cashier in supermarkets and we didn't have a lot of money. We had to sell the house because the bills and debts were piling up. After that we moved in with my paternal grandparents and lived with them for a couple of years until we moved to the coast to live with my maternal grandparents. It was difficult because we were eight people living in a five-bedroom house in which the only source of income was my parents. I almost never saw them, they went to work in the morning and came back at night. My grandmother raised me and my brother, that was when I was six years old.â She clenched her jaw and blinked several times, trying not to cry. Her family didnât have a very good time as far as money was concerned.
She swallowed back tears and continued âWhen I started winning races, I started making money and with that I helped out at home. We could eat better, my grandmother was in poor health so we could pay for her medicines too, school materials and bills but still most of the money went on trips to the competitions so it was still a bit difficult to pay for things. When I started in Formula 3 I began to earn more money and paid most of my parents' debts, then in Formula 2 I paid my grandparents' debts and house and some other things to my aunts. Now that I earn so much money I have been able to buy a house for myself and I have bought another one for my parents. Now I want to buy one for my grandparents. I want no one in my family to lack anything, everâ.
The lady smiled sadly and nodded. "That's very noble of you. Is that your goal in Formula One, to take care of your family?â.
âIt is one of them but not the main oneâ.
âWhat is your goal in Formula One?â.
She fixed her gaze on the camera, her face completely changed to a serious and determined one. "Win. I want to be the best, I want to be better than Lewis Hamilton, I want to win the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
"Do you think you'll make it?".
"Oh, I know I will." Her right corner rose pulling her full lips into a self-centered half smile. "Even if I have to die for it, I will."
âGOD, my tits are sweatingâ She complained while her fingers pulled on the corset, trying to unstick it from her skin so some air could pass through.
The boy let out a laugh that he tried to hide with his hand but she heard him. She looked up at him and raised an eyebrow. âIs this funny to you? I'm sufferingâ.
âIt's not every day that I hear that someone's chest is sweating, sorry for laughingâ He apologized but she ignored him by pulling at her clothes again. He looked her up and down, delicately observing how the long ferrari red skirt fit around her body, stopping right at her waist letting the corset of the same color expose the skin of her hip.
He wondered where the team's logo was, he had it on his jacket on the side of his chest but the prancing horse wasnât on her dress.
Without taking his eyes of her, he licked his lips "If it's any consolation, I think you look very pretty."
âWow, Leclercâ Immediately a flirtatious smile crept across her lips and he rolled his eyes âAnd here I thought you were going to be rude and not give a compliment to this beautiful ladyâ.
âWhy give you compliments if you already give them to yourself?â He turned his gaze to the window and observed the streets of Melbourne without interest, without a doubt they were not as interesting as the beauty sitting next to her.
A silence filled the car, it wasn't uncomfortable but it was silence and it was killing Charles because he wanted âno, he neededâ for her to say something. He needed them to keep talking because he knew that when they got to her gala they were going to snatch her from his arms and he probably wouldn't talk to her again until the next day.
"I think you're very handsome too." With a murmur she broke the silence. Playing with the rings that decorated her fingers and also looked out her window âThe suit looks good on you.â
âThank you, Belleâ A feeling of warmth enveloped him and suddenly he felt that the suit was suffocating him. He cleared his throat and shifted in the seat âI heard you recorded with Netflix today, how did it go?â.
She turned her body, with difficulty because of her corset, in the direction of his so that she could better converse with him. She smiled slightly "It was strange?" Her laugh make him smile "I had never done something like this but I liked being able to tell my story and I'm eager for people to see it. I want them to know me for me and not for what the press says or the haters on the internet.
Giving her a somewhat sad smile he took her hand in his and squeezed it affectionately "I'm sure they'll love you."
"Thank you, Charles." Her eyes traveled all over his face as she responded with a grateful smile.
For Arabella, her relationship with her teammate was strange. She knew him from Formula Three but they never spoke because he was older and was always with the boys his age while she only had Mick and Lando as friends since most of the other kids didn't like that there was a girl in Formula Three, much less one that was who was kicking their asses. It was when she started in the Ferrari academy in 2016 that they were introduced to each other but they didnât hang out too much since he was still affected by the death of his godfather, Jules Bianchi, and she was very focused on finishing her studies to be able to focus on her career better.
Eight months ago, Ferrari was beginning to tease that both would be the next drivers for Formula One, so their managers suggested that they start talking to improve their camaraderie and she couldn't complain, they had a good relationship but it was strange since sometimes there was tension and he had a hard time talking to her, sometimes he seemed shy or cold and that drove her crazy because she only wanted a friend, she didn't have any so being friends with her teammate sounded good.
While for Charles his relationship with Arabella was pleasant or at least it was until a couple of months ago, when he began to look at her with different eyes and he didnât like that because it was dangerous for both him and her, they would be kicked out of Ferrari because the contract they had signed and Arabella would be massacred on social media, it would be a disaster. Of course, this is speaking in case she also reciprocated his feelings and they started a relationship, but it didn't look like that was going to happen at any time because his teammate didn't even deign to look at him for more than a minute, let alone look at him that way.
He didn't want their friendship to be affected by his little crush, he wanted to be her teammate and her friend, but unfortunately sometimes his feelings got the better of him and he didn't know how to act in front of her so things sometimes became awkward.
âDo you think the sponsors will like me?â Her question caught his attention, taking him away from her thoughts. He looked at her and for a moment he swore he saw a small, insecure girl.
He caressed the back of her hand with his thumb and smiled at her "They're going to love you, like everyone else and if not better for me thenâ.
She let go of his hand, much to his dismay, and gave him a little push on his arm, making him laugh in amusement.
Suddenly screams began to be heard outside the car, drawing the attention of both drivers. Each one looked out their respective window, amazed to see fans crowded at the door of the hotel where the small gala for the beginning of the season would be held.
"We have arrived" The driver informed them, drawing their attention; they didnât even remembered that there was a third person in the car.
They looked at each other. Charles took a deep breath, placing his hand on the door handle "Wait here, I'll help you down."
âThereâs no need...â
âYes, there isâ And with that he got out of the car, the screams increased.
The girl took a breath and began to play with the pearl necklace that decorated her neck.
âHostia putaâ Muttered to herself in her native language before sighing and putting a smile on her face. Holy shit.
Just in time the door opened revealing her teammate. He extended his hand towards her offering support, she looked into his eyes and nodded ever so slightly to herself before sliding her hand over his. As soon as she got out of the car, the flashes blinded her and the screams left her deaf for a few seconds until Charles began to pull her towards the hotel door.
She smiled at the cameras and let herself be carried away by the monegasque, who took her arm and wrapped it in his own before leaning towards her ear. His lips lightly brushing against his ear âYou're doing so goodâ
Her body froze, why she suddenly had goosebumps?.
The brown haired boy walked away from her although he was still at a quite questionable distance and locked eyes with her. Arabella frowned slightly, getting lost in his green eyes so light that they seemed transparent unlike her own, which were assimilated to fresh grass.
What was happening?.
âBella!â Daniel Ricciardo exclaimed as soon as he saw them, interrupting whatever was happening between them. The younger two turned in the direction of the voice, finding themselves with a small group made up of some of their fellow drivers.
âDannyâ The girl smiled, letting go of her teammate to head towards the others. Immediately the middle child of the Leclercs felt a sting in his chest when he saw her leaving, but then was distracted when he saw something shining on the girl's lower back.
'FERRARI'
The team's name in capital letters danced with every step the girl took, written in sparkling gems on the skirt of her dress not far from her butt.
âMon dieuâ He breathed out through his nose, shaking his head. It was going to be a very long night. My god.
âI don't know if it's legal for you to drink alcohol in this countryâ The spaniard male looked with concern at the glass of champagne that was dancing between his compatriot's delicate hands.
"Don't worry, I asked Ricciardo and he said the minimum age here is eighteenâ She pursed her plump lips in a smile and brought the glass to her mouth, finishing off the golden liquid in one gulp. She wrinkled his nose âEsto es un coñazo.â This is so fucking boring.
Sainz let out a small laugh behind his glass. âYes, it is.â
âAh, I know!â A gasp came out of her mouth and her gaze lit up, which scared the McLaren driver who looked at her with terror âWe should escapeâ.
âNo no no no. Don't even think about it, Bellaâ He left the glass on the bar where they were leaning while he shook his head repeatedly.
A pout appeared on her lips, painted red as her dress âOh, come on! Please, Carlosâ She began to fix the boy's suit as if it wasnât perfectly ironed, she squinted at him âTell me you wouldn't eat a hamburger from McDonalds instead of this fucking appetizers that feels like you're eating cardboardâ.
He looked at her interested and she smiled, he was going to accept. He opened his mouth to respond but was interrupted by the arrival of the monegasque.
He looked at the girl's hands on the older man's chest and frowned. "What are you doing?"
âShe's seducing meâ The black-haired man murmured in english, earning a pinch from the girl âOh! Hija deââ Son of (a bitch).
âWe were talking about going to eat something real and not thisâ She picked up a appetizer that was next to her with a disgusted expression before turning to Charles to look at him curiously âDo you want to come? It seems that Carlitos doesn't want to come with meâ.
To be alone with her? In that dress of hers? Without thinking he answered yes and she stuck her tongue out at Carlos, who rolled his eyes.
âIf you leave, you should go to your hotel, to sleep and nothing elseâ Carlos opened his eyes widely and set his tone in the last sentence, insinuating something.
"How boring," She twisted her mouth before taking 16's hand, taking him by surprise "See you, Carlitos. Have a good time, ehâ.
In response, the older man gave her the middle finger to which she laughed before beginning to pull her teammate, who looked at the older man over his shoulder.
âCarefulâ Who with his index and ring fingers pointed to his eyes and then to them as if to say "I'm keeping an eye on you."
An hour and a half later they were both sitting on the hood of a Ferrari devouring some hamburgers while looking at Melbourne from a viewpoint that Daniel had advised Arabella to visit.
âWill we get in trouble for this?â Guilt had begun to form in the female driverâs stomach. What if they got into serious trouble for having escaped? Or worse, what if she got Charles into trouble?.
Even without swallowing his burger and with sauce on the corner of his mouth, he gave him a toothless smile âIf we do it, it's worth it. Dieu, those appetizers were horribleâ. God.
She laughed thinking he looked adorable, she looked down at the burger in her hands and took another bite.
âDon't worry, we already talked to all the sponsorsâ Seeing her still worried, he dropped the hamburger on his lap and took her chin in his huge hand, making her turn her face to look at him âWe did our job. They will tell us nothing. Calm down, okay?â.
Since she didn't answer, he got closer to her and leaned his hand up to her, forcing her to look up at him "Okay?"
She let out an affirmative "Mmmh" finally looking into his eyes. And suddenly everything stopped: the lights, the noise of the cars, the air moving the trees, the voice of Harry Styles singing the chorus of "Lights Up" from the car radio. Everything, everything stopped and began to move in slow motion when Charles, cautious, began to approach her while her gaze began to run a marathon between her lips and her eyes.
And then everything exploded, everything came to life again at a speed faster than the cars they drives for a living as soon as their lips collided. As cliche as it sounded, Arabella felt fireworks explode around her as the hand holding her chin slid to her throat, Charles's other hand wrapped around her waist pulling her closer. The hamburger she was holding in her hands fell to the ground when she let go of it to bring her hands to the boy's hair, she let out a moan into his mouth when the hand on her neck squeezed in response.
They broke apart as her lungs began to scream for air, Charles resting his forehead on hers before tucking an unruly lock of hair that was covering her face behind her ear. She watched him silently while trying to catch her breath.
He smiled, kissing her forehead to which she let out a sigh, closing her eyes. "This, for this we can get into trouble."
She felt him pull her lips away from her skin and almost moaned in protest but she decided to shut up when he brought their foreheads together again and looked at her so intensely that she felt like she could see into his soul.
âIf I get into trouble for you, it's worth it. You are worth itâ.

Wake up. Do the mission. Go to school. Sleep. Repeat.
Wake up.
Do the mis-
Your heart drops as the grip on your web slips, any remaining strength in your body dispersing despite your instinct to shoot another.
"Someone catch me," You breathe out, eyes fluttering shut as you brace yourself for impact. Just my luck, you think before passing out.
------
Murmurs. It's the first thing you pick on as you regain consciousness. Your eyelids feel heavy, and even the slightest movement sends a sharp pain throughout your spine. Ultimately, it is useless trying to move. The urge to groan is strong yet unattainable. You can't help but think of the long and agonizing recovery waiting for you.
"She's been punished enough," A harsh whisper echoes from a distance, "Just look at her."
Your brows twitch as you strain yourself to focus. Just where were you? And why did your body feel...? A jolt of panic forces your eyes to open, bright lights swarming your vision and making them squint. You take deep breaths as you assess your surroundings -Â The infirmary.
A scoff catches your attention from outside the door. Two shadows, Jessica and Miguel, were in a heated argument. Their words reach your ears, albeit in fragments.
"You should be glad I didn't kick her out altogether," Miguel argues quietly from the other end. "She knew what she signed up for the moment she joined."Â
"You and I both know this isn't what she signed up for," Jessica bristled.
There's a brief pause, and then Jessica enters the room with a small smile. Your eyes briefly meet Miguel's. The man stood there with an unsympathetic gaze, eyes slightly narrowing as they scanned you. Without so much acknowledgment, he leaves.
"Ignore him," Jessica hums. "How are you feeling?"
"Like I became one with the ground," You croak with a small laugh. "I guess no one caught me," You pout, more so grimace.
"Sorry about that, hun. By the time we noticed, you were already out of reach. Hobie somehow managed to brace your impact with his webs."
You nod. "Any serious damage?"
"None, other than a minor concussion and a sore body," Jessica replies, looking over your chart. "You need to rest." She eyes you sternly.
"Kind of hard when your boss has a vendetta against you," You grimace, sitting up.Â
"I'm aware he's out of line-"
"Is he?" You close your eyes, pushing yourself off the bed. "Somehow, the more I end up here, the less sympathy I have for myself," You remove the IV attached to your hand. "A couple of concussions doesn't even begin to make up for my mistake. If we can even call it that."
You change into your suit and begin to head out.Â
"Where are you going?" Jessica questions behind you.Â
You pull on your mask while opening a portal. "Part-time, remember. The last thing I need is someone else nagging me."
Arriving at your job, the lab director nods in your direction as you take place behind your station. With one headphone on, you immerse yourself in work. Somehow you manage to find solace and relaxation in the tasks at hand.
Your soft hums resonate throughout the room, time progressively passing, and your mind drifting. You reflect on the repetitive nature of your life â wake up, mission, school, sleep, repeat. How many more times were you going to push yourself to exhaustion? The last time your body gave out in a mission, you had risked endangering Gwen. Working for the team was becoming increasingly difficult. More so working for him.Â
Lately, it was like clockwork. Mission after mission, no matter how many you completed or how many reports you submitted, there would always be another. And another. And another. And well, you know how routines work.Â
You joined the organization being made fully aware of how things ran around HQ. And who ran things around HQ. Miguel hadn't been the one to recruit you; Hobie did. The anarchic spider had taken quite a liking toward you -- your abilities in particular. With one mischievous grin, Hobie brought you to Earth-928, handing you over to Jessica Drew like some new toy before leaving to do his 'own thing'.
Things were honestly going fine for you at HQ. More and more Spider-people continued to join, and you couldn't have asked for better mentors (and friends) while becoming part of this society. Everything had been so exciting, so liberating. Â
And then... and then your eighth mission happened. Earth-12131. Scorpion from Earth-1610 had appeared in that universe. Though difficult, the mission had been going according to plan; you and Gwen were in charge of capturing the anomaly while Pavitr aided and rescued endangered citizens. Between the three, you had webbed Scorpion against a wall, minimizing any attack they had planned.Â
What wasn't anticipated was the multiple shards of glass coming down from the roof to cut through the webbing. Scorpion's tail had quickly knocked you off your feet, its stinger immediately targeting your watch. Things progressively got worse after that.
A broken watch meant unstable atoms, unstable atoms meant unavoidable glitching, which you did --Â badly. As Gwen and Pavitr handled the anomaly, you attempted to regain yourself, fingers working rapidly to repair the watch. That is until you glitched again, your very being reacting with the electromagnetism of the device. Any control you held over your abilities at that moment vanished, twisted hallucinations and sensory delusions falling prey to those unfortunate within proximity.
You had sensed everything, from the nightmarish visions that developed from people's fears to the suffocating darkness that overwhelmed them due to the oppressive void that robbed them of sight, sound, and touch.
Fifteen people died that day.
Gwen and Pavitr had barely managed to fight off the disorienting effect before coming to your rescue after capturing the anomaly. This mission marked you for the rest of your stay at HQ.Â
"Y/N?"
You physically jerk at the sound of your name, your body reacting to the sudden interruption. Upon realization, you address your boss, hands instinctively setting down the tools you'd been holding.
"You can leave now," They tilt their head toward the clock. "It's already past nine."Â
Your eyes slightly widen, "Right! Yeah - sorry, I'll be going now." You rush to say, hurriedly packing your belongings. Â
"Goodnight, Y/N."
"Goodnight, Professor!"
Exiting the building, you can't help but rub your tired eyes. You contemplate the choice of whether to head back to your shared dorm or your very own personal quarters at HQ.
You snort. "HQ for sure," You mutter, preparing to open a portal.Â
Just as you're about to, an incoming call from Lyla interrupts you. You answer with a tired smile. "Please don't tell me I have another mission waiting for me," You groan, energy already draining.Â
She laughs, pink shades sliding down to throw you a wink. "Nope!" She envelops you with a portal of her own. "Miguel wants to see you."
What? "What?" You voice out loud, already regretting your choices. "Lyla I don't think-"
"Be there tomorrow early morning!" She salutes you before disappearing.Â
You stand there, mouth slightly agape. Nothing about what Lyla said left you feeling at ease. If anything, you were positive another fainting episode was about to happen. Deep breaths, you remind yourself.Â
With a mixture of uncertainty and exhaustion, you head to your room for a few hours of sleep, hoping to be prepared for whatever awaits you when you meet Miguel in the morning. If Miguel wanted to see you, he would see you. Just not defenseless.Â
At least he won't kill you, right?... Right?
Part Two | Part Three |
[A/N] - Well... I hope that was alright. Please feel free to message me what you think so far, or comment!
I know it's kind of short but I want to gauge people's reactions first to see whether it's worth continuing. Anyways thx!
