Let the world know, btw, that i did not even realise hisomaso was a vore anime because honestly i dont give 2 shits abt vore and i just found it cool that the dragons ate the people and they piloted them!! It was cool and it flew over my head all the beautifully animated dragon insides squeezing the girls was in fact a fetish thing

Its been a bit, but anyone else particularly unsatisfied with the way Dragon Pilot ended? Like, I get that I was probably imagining a lot more of the themes I was enjoying than were strictly, textual supported, but after a full series of watching Amakasu try to find her way and make friends in a setting where she is harassed and forced to jump at arbitrary expectations and told what she can and can't do with herself, let's just say "I know who I am now, I'm a loyal member of the armed forces and I will do my duty for my country" left a really random taste in my mouth... I couldn't be more surprised if a shounen fighting anime ended with a speech by the main character about the importance of compromising on your values. It's just not supported by the rest of what the story was building up...
And I was *really* enjoying that story, too, no matter how much of it was in my head. Plus it was cute, gorgeous, and funny at the same time.
#Hisomaso#Dragon Pilot#Dpilot#Hisone to Masotan#Don't you give me an anime about how an isolated 20-something failgirl learns to form female friendships#That give her solace when the arbitrary demands of her male superiors force her into compromising situations#Only for the climactic turning point be deciding to fly into the danger zone not for love#But because it's her duty as technically an adjacent military personnel#Who was forced into this job and has never really had anything to do with the chain of command

Review: Dragon Pilot: Hisone and Masotan
This has been on my watchlist for so long and I finally sat down to watch it. Initially, I was really on the fence because the sexism was so intense. I come from a military family and, having heard my mother’s horror stories, I slowly came to realize that the show was just accurately representing the struggle women in the military face. The question then becomes, is that sort of realism necessary? I’m caught in a weird in between note on that. In reality, I despise the sexism and it really makes me cringe while watching it. On the other hand, I applaud how Hoshino fought so bravely against it and it is, sadly, what women have to still deal with in the military today. So for me, that lands in a bit of a grey area.
Otherwise, I found the story and characters really compelling. I really loved how Hisone just makes her own path. I like how Masotan is a bit of an enigma. The whole show has a really retro vibe to it; to the point where you could mistake this for an older anime even though it came out in 2018. The ending theme especially captures an old school outro feel and the song is a total retro sounding banger. The dub was pretty good; it didn’t deviate too far from the sub. While I was along for the ride, I did think that the whole Lord Mitatsu Ritual just kind of happened out of no where. The character building for the girls was so good and then it just sort of seemed like a longer format through line for the story just suddenly manifested as soon as they were fleshed out enough. For example, in episode 8 they bring up at the beginning of the episode that they’ll need to usher Lord Mitatsu for 72 straight hours of non-stop flying. Then it just happens. I’m not even sure if that was them actually ushering Lord Mitatsu or if they were practicing. There was no indication when they actually lead Lord Mitatsu in the end that that was 72 hours. It was just not clarified well. Also, why are the girls called White Lovers? They never really explain why. Otherwise, I loved all the girls. I loved all the dragons. The story was certainly interesting and Okonogi was a treasure. I appreciate that the show doesn’t feel the need to hold your hand on certain things. Like, it’s just obvious that Natsume was chosen to be the Kusabime. Even though they don’t explicitly say it in episode 10 (and won’t until episode 12) you just know it. Also, all the twists with the Yakult Grandma are insane. Hinomoto being gay all along being the best of all of them. It’s so sad it’s another victim of the Bury Your Gays trope.
Verdict:

If you haven't, you should watch Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken. I feel it has a lot of the vibes that you'd like.
Yeah what little I’ve heard about it, it seems pretty interesting. The character designs and style alone already caught my attention. Definitely want to check it out, thanks for reminding me!
Plus, if tkmiz is into it, then I have to check it out.
I guess while I’m having a weeb minute, I want to say that at some point I need to talk about HisoMaso. I wasn’t really sure what I was expecting going in. I was familiar with the basic premise of dragons that turn into fighter jets, and that this was another Mari Okada original, but that’s all. After finally getting around to watching it, was so much better than I was expecting. It’s just got so much character and heart to it, along with a really great VA cast. It’s definitely going on my next 3x3, whenever that ends up being.
And because I thought it would pair nicely with it, I decided to watch the absolute trash that is Girly Air Force. It’s bad. Like, it’s really bad. Watching it back to back with HisoMaso, which it actually has more in common with than you’d think, makes it clear as day how much love and effort was put into HisoMaso. GAF on the other hand, feels like the most shallow and superficial take possible on its weird premise.
