LUNAR Remastered Collection announced for PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC - Gematsu

GungHo Online Entertainment has announced LUNAR Remastered Collection for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC (Steam). It includes remastered versions of LUNAR: Silver Star Story and LUNAR 2: Eternal Blue. It will launch in spring 2025.

thinking about my feelings on the dub. no hates here, just sorting my own opinion out to myself.

the dub seems very prevelant in the hnk fandom!... which is a struggle for me. the fact that nearly every dedesuka fanfic writes out dedede's dub accent phonetically confounds me. reading that feels like pulling teeth and i can't imagine feeling differently !

my opinion on 4kids was formed in my childhood. i felt so frustrated that they appeared to come at their properties with this base level of disrespect towards both the source material and their young audiences... dumbing down their content, erasing cultural references, and removing darker concepts (like threats of violence or death), all for the sake of appealing to uppity parents or network execs. it came off as cynical and disingenuine. very bothering to kid me!

being an adult now, i know better than to think the writer's room didn't care about what they were doing and instead realize that they probably had to struggle quite a bit with the censorship. it was a different time back then and i imagine that studios, especially for children's tv and especially for children's tv coming from across the water (people are still guilty of that offensive "WTF japan's so WEEEIRD and CRAAAZY" mentality, so who knows what it was like back then), weren't allowed a lot of wiggle room. i can say that i'm surprised at the amount they let right back at ya get away with. hoshi no kaabii was a pretty bizarre show and 4kids just kinda rolled with a lot of it.

i do appreciate right back at ya for... what it is. i like what some of the english vas bring to the table -- ted lewis is a very funny man, dan green is a perfect customer service, i can't help but feel biased towards maddie blaustein's performances, and spanish meta knight never fails to make me laugh -- but some writing and acting decisions feel flippant (not to mention the fact that beside the acceptable performances, there are some absolutely GRATING voices in there; tiff and tuff's line reads make me feel insane). the dub comes off as a big joke, which i think contributes to why it's been memed to death. i can't take it seriously, and i don't really want to!

i'm not going to pretend like hoshi no kaabii in its original form is like, emotionally deeper than the dub or anything. but what i do know is this:

kenichi ogata was, is, and always will be the dedede va of my all time. he plays such a lively and charming interpretation of dedede; he's old, he's loud, he's mean, he's cute. and maybe i'm gay and anime dedede being my first major childhood crush did something to my brain chemistry but we don';t have to talk about that. when i hear him i feel very something.

naoki tatsuta is a powerhouse as escargon. he mentions in an interview barely being able to keep up, and i don't blame him -- he goes in hard, and it gave escargon so much character. his exasperation is palpable (and, apparently, genuine!).

there are no voices in the japanese version that straight up bother me. every voice suits each character, at the very least, well enough.

at the end of the day, this is all subjective. tons of people like the dub enough to view it as their main visualization of the anime. i almost wish i could see what they see so that i had an easier time immersing myself within fan creations... almost. the japanese cast is just too likable to me. so i will continue to not see what other people see and i will enjoy it. i'll just grumble a little to myself about having to refer to "escargoon" and 4kids re-characterizations whenever i edit wikirby pages.

I love the original TFP dub but I also dig the Japanese version! I often enjoy comparing the differences between them!

A lot of popular voice actors in Japan participate in the show. Some of them even did voices in the “BEAST WARS” series, which had a big fanbase in my country.

The biggest difference between the original and the Japanese version is that the latter makes a few adjustments to the characters to make them more distinctive and child-friendly. They even added some comical lines that weren’t in the original to make it more mild and relatable for children. Because the original had some pretty serious moments. So in the Japanese version, Starscream and Airachnid turned out to be the funniest characters…

Similarly, “BEAST WARS” also underwent some comical changes for similar reasons. And because of that, the show was a hit with Japanese kids back in the day. So in TFP, I'd say they also gave a nod to fans who grew up watching it.

But as you can imagine, these changes have divided opinions among fans in Japan. Tbh, I understand how both of them feel about it because I love the original vibes! That being said, the Japanese dub has a lot of adorable moments that don’t exist in the original version! Let me pick up MY BOY BREAKDOWN as an example!!!!

He has a funny childish demeanor and talks more than in the original dub. His favorite phrase is “壊すの大好き!(I love breaking things!)”

In “Deus Ex Machina,” the episode of his first appearance, he says, “あーーーごめーーーーん！！(AAAHHH I’M SOOOORYYYYYY!!!)” to Knock Out when he accidentally hits his partner's face with his hammer!

In the next episode, “Speed Metal,” when Starscream scratches Knock Out’s paint as a punishment, Breakdown breaks the fourth wall and speaks to kids in front of the TV, saying “みんなぁ！ いじめはダメだぞぉ！(HEY YOU GUYS!! BULLYING IS WRONG!!)” AWW IT'S SO ADORABLE!! HES 100% A NICE GUY lmao

And surprisingly, he even sings a song sometimes... If you don't believe me, please check out “T.M.I” and “Operation Bumblebee part 2” 🥺

And Our Knock Out is even more of a narcissist than in the original. He always praises himself for how beautiful he is. He usually uses polite Japanese when talking to others, but sometimes he talks to Breakdown casually! I love how the difference in his behavior signifies that Breakdown is special to him as a friend! ( ꈍᴗꈍ) <3

In addition, the voices of Optimus and Megatron both sound younger than in the original! On the other hand, Bulkhead sounds older than in the English version. That's interesting! Oh, and did you know? Wheeljack speaks just like a samurai! This change is probably due to his two-sword style.

I especially love Japanese Ratchet. The voice actor is Nobuo Tobita, who has played many TF characters until now. His voice is really soft and gentle! Besides, he also voiced Scourge in Rise of the Beasts! Wow, he has a wide range of acting! I’m a long-time fan of his!

Oh, speaking of ROTB, let me mention Japanese Mirage’s voice actor, Shingo Fujimori! He’s a famous comedian, and his comedy style is acting like a player and a party person (or someone like that… it’s difficult to explain). He shouts things like “YOOO! GIRL, YOU’RE SO PURDYYY!” So he really fits the character of Mirage!

Oh! And you listened to “TRANSFORMERZ” by M-flo? I like the song too! The original opening theme of TFP is magnificent, so you all might be surprised at the gap between them, but such an anime style is not bad, right? It's interesting how we find different styles in different countries!Unfortunately, the show was only broadcast in Japan up to seasons 2. I wish I could have seen the entire series dubbed in Japanese...😭

Dungeon Meshi Anime Review, Season 1, Episode 7 review

Another great episode (Kabru!!! Kabru!!!)! Once more I have very little to say except that I liked it. Great animation, great music, great voice acting in both Japanese and English.

No weird anachronisms in the dub script, though I will say there were actually a few lines of dialog pertaining to the plot that were easier to understand in the Japanese subtitles, some nuance got lost in the dub but was clearer in the Japanese, and normally it's been the reverse until now.

A few more thoughts (and possible spoilers) under the cut:

I think they are being a BIT too faithful to the manga at points, they are leaving Laios' nose off and not finishing it a lot in this episode, which is something Kui did a LOT in the early manga and stopped doing later as she got more experience with drawing his character. There's no reason for the anime version's nose to just not get drawn except that they're trying to imitate the manga panels, which I think isn't necessarily great, since the earlier art just wasn't as good as the later art in my opinion.

The character designs in general have been averaged so that the designs overall look closer to Kui's end-of-manga style, so doing early manga style choices with only Laios looks weirdly out of place.

Obviously sometimes the nose is left off for comedic purposes, but it was happening in all kinds of shots in this episode, and it looked like the animators just didn't want to bother.

They cut out elements of Kabru's party's story in order to fit 3 chapters into this episode. Hopefully the missing parts will be included in the future episode when Kabru and his party return, and we'll get to see them interact, since most of the character development they get IN the story happens in those scenes.

If they just completely cut those scenes and don't include them later, it'll leave Kabru and his party really underdeveloped, as well as not telling anime viewers some worldbuilding stuff that would be really nice for them to know.

Though the animation and pacing was generally good, moving so quickly past Senshi's sadness over having to kill Anne felt like a disservice to that plot beat.

Also might have been nice to have a longer moment to focus on Senshi and Marcille bonding, though what they did was adequate.

The fight with the kraken was good, however, the nuance of "we can't attack the kraken because it's under the water and we are on top, and it can hit us from any direction but we can't hit it back" was sort of lost.

This made using waterwalk on the kraken seem to come a bit out of nowhere.

Also the kraken didn't really struggle or move after getting stuck on top of the water, which might have helped show that it wants to stay underwater and being up top like that was bad for it.

Other than that, a really solid episode.

Some predictions for upcoming episodes and adaptation choices:

Next episode will be the Falin flashback and the first undine fight and then following episode the 2nd undine fight + tentacles Then combine the frogs with the dragon planning. Maybe also the necromancy chapter? Or they put that at the beginning of the actual dragon fight episode...

OR

They just do the Falin flashback as fast as possible, and do all the parts of the undine together. So, that'd be 4 chapters in one.

Sailor Moon Thoughts - i know i'm 10yrs late but Crystal's not that bad actually

so i recently got back into sailor moon

grew up on the english dub 90s anime (watch the jpn sub in 9th grade)

had only read the manga once in the past and that was in college; however i just recently bought the first 2 volumes of the collector's edition (just finished V2 actually!)

but this is my first time watching Crystal (mostly bc when it was first coming out there was so much backlash and hate and it made me turn away from it)

now that i've read volumes 1&2 and watched S1 i gotta say...when compared to the manga Crystal's honestly not that bad and i'd say overall pretty faithful

Spoilers for Sailor Moon Crystal!

Usagi and Mamoru

first thing's first! mamoru's age is fixed! fucking yay!

in both the manga and crystal he's a 16yr old 2nd year high school kid! not a 1st year college student dating at 14yr old little girl! he and usagi compliment each other and it really shows in crystal imo

90s-SM fleshes out this couple individually more in the first season and i'm in love with that and they have some really sweet moments and i still ship it ofc i do BUT the age difference got so iffy and squeakable for me when watching again as a grown ass adult!

some of usagi's emotional intelligence is downplayed and she sometimes comes off as even younger than she is and that makes the ship feel uneven and i just keep thinking "there he goes off with his child bride 👋🏽" and it really doesn't help that they animated mamoru looking so much older and acting like a mature 20-something (even tho yes, he's closer to 18 but an 18yr old dating a 14yr old is still so squeakable to me)

the manga is where this ship thrives and it's more believable that they fall for each other especially bc they're on more equal footing but crystal adds in a scene in S1 that i personally love that's when sailor moon and tuxedo mask are fighting zoisite toward the middle of the season (before venus shows up)

i'm massively paraphraseing but in this scene usagi doesn't just tell but shows mamoru through her tears and pained expression that she understands he's deeply lonely and that it hurts her, she doesn't want that for him, she wants to do everything in her power to make sure he never feels that way again

and mamoru tells her that SHE is everything he wants and he doesn't need a magical stone to find out who he is and where he belongs not when she's standing beside him bc her strength and kindness are inspiring and he's not afraid or lonely when around her

"i won't let you be alone anymore" / "seeing your strength makes me so happy" couples are my downfall and this scene cracks me right open

and this is BEFORE they regain their memories i'm fucking dead!

English Dub

i vaguely remember ppl shitting on the English dub of Crystal and yes i watched it in Japanese first but the English dub is actually really great?! especially when compared to the 90's English dub!! i love Usagi's VA and i think all the voices match the characters pretty well

The Transformations and Character Designs

okay so those 3D transformations are bad

the animation is really jarring at first and yeah it's not good i don't like it but after a while you just sort of...idk get used to it and it's not a make-or-break thing imo now did the 90s anime do it better? fuck yeah! but by the end of the season i just felt meh about them and barely cared

i remember the character designs getting A. LOT. of hate and yeah i agree that they are too sharp and angular and that the manga was more a cross between the 90s and crystal character designs - but that's another thing you get used to and also doesn't that get fixed later?

plus idk i kind like that both animated versions each take one end of the spectrum with the manga in the middle 🤷🏾‍♀️

The Big One

okay now the big one - the supposed past love between the 4 heavenly kings and the inner planet guardians that wasn't in the manga and definitely not in the 90s version where these guys are handled more interestingly

i think this subby-subplot that's not even really a subplot is stupid and doesn't amount to anything and doesn't actually make a ton of sense if earthlings and...and moonlings being together is forbidden the serenity had to SNEAK AWAY to see her earth prince and it does sort of take away some of the tragedy that is serenity and endymion's doomed love

like i was going "what was the point of that" when the kings all die and the sailor girls are weeping for 2secs before getting back to busniess and i get wanting to expand more on all 8 of these characters, but that's not how you do it - 90s-SM expanded on these characters better because plot points were stretched out and we got to know the characters more slowly over a longer period of time (plus 2 of the kings were lovers! that's cute as hell!!)

basically this whole thing was shoved into the story last minute with very minimal build up barely any conclusion and it's really uninteresting

0.3/5🌙 (only bc venus dropping a few hints every few episodes was done well enough-ish but it was still stupid in the end and shouldn't have been included the way it was)

Conclusion

even with that though crystal still isn't that bad - overall it's actually pretty good and i love experiencing the manga coming to animated live

the OST is beautiful! and even tho NOTHING tops the 90s theme song that crystal usamamo love theme is fucking gorgeous 😍 in fact all the music in crystal is top teir imo

i do miss the focus on the female friendship tho and kinda wish crystal took some of that 90s-SM female friendship focus BUT 90s-SM just had so much more time to work with and at the end of the day SM is a romance so i understand why the anime adapting the manga more closely focused on the romance more heavily (and that usamamo scene i talked about above is still so. damn. good!)

anyway if you're like me and didn't bother watching crystal bc the hate and backlash when it first came out i say give it a try

it's still cute and still sailor moon and so far it's getting a 4/5🌙

i'll probably do another one of these when i finish S2 (jon and eng) and the volumes it adapted

Sonic - English, Japanese version - my impression as somebody who doesn't speak any of the two languages.

First - my experience with the two languages, to explain how I perceived thing as a total foreigner.

English - I truly can't speak English. My written English sucks. I don't know if you can read/understand my posts. I can read English, both British and American (I usually use British English but I use American when I want to be more concise), overall I can read all kind of topics, but I don't like slangs. My listenings skills are bad, it depends who is speaking. I could listen and understand enough Sonic Prime without subtitles, but in other occasion the language is too different from Italian and I need the subs.

Japanese - Mostly I watch anime in Japanese. I don't speak the language at all and I can count all the japanese words I know in one hand. The sound of the language is sillabic so is as clear as Italian. As for Sonic, I watched Sonic X in Japanese version (Italian and English version long ago, I don't even remember a lot), the two adventure in English, Unleashed in both version, Frontiers in Italian and Japanese.

Sonic Force is boring, I was unable to pay attention. I saw it not long ago and I quickly forgot everything. The only good thing was Infinite's Italian voice, is very beautiful.

OK, my impression of the character from English version was not like it was describled there. I perceived it more how is perceived in the Japanese version. Many times I said our personal experience make us perceive a character in a certain way, maybe the language I speak is part of it. Italian is more contextual than English, or maybe is how character act (that does't change whathever language they speak), I don't know... I remember perceiving Sonic as a aloof, slightly grumpy but kind hearted and happy character before watching the Japanese version (that just confirmed that). Current Sonic - even in Japanese, is more outgoing and sullen.

Flanderization happened in the Japanese version too and is undeniable (I said i watched the Japanese versions too).

Knuckles still does his duty, but I saw him more and more relaxed lately. Like: 'A bit of absence won't hurt!'. The describled flanderization sounds more like the one we saw in Sonic Boom.

Sonic X is Japanese and she is clearly different from videogames (Right, I've said I watched the Japanese version). In the two adventure Amy was energetic yet gentle. I remember her kind attitude toward Gamma and Shadow. in Sonic X she made me laugh, but yes, she looks also dangerous. Sonic is right to avoid her.

Magical girl Amy. Well - Eggman deserve that.

This poor guy had it the worst. I remember Shadow being overall gloomy but still playful. Is like they just took away all the facets that made Shadow likeable and left only the flaws (inflating them to 'fill' emty spaces) . The Shadow we had during last decade (except for Lance Shadow) is the perfect edgy character that only 15 years old kids like. At 15 I also lingered on edgelords and I though they were the best because they were 'oh, pure serious' and didn't lingered in 'foolish cheerfulness'. I even characterized some of my own characters as edgelords (I'm glad I'm out from it since late teen). My mum made me understand why they suck, calling them 'arm candy' (belle statuine). That was a great and helpful criticism.

I loved funny and evil Eggman. I don't like what Eggman is lately, more than a villain, he seems a mignon.

Though Japanese dialogue might be better and more meaningful (when different from English ones), this doesn't mean Japanese version of Sonic is free of issues. We need to accept that Sonic franchise is flawed, that the fandom is not perfect. The good thing is that all the material we have around can satisfy all palates. Let's enjoy what we like and hope for the better, whathever will be.

For those of you who don't know, the Disney Villain Recruiters was a Tokyo Disneyland-only show held every Halloween. Basically, the minions of famous Disney villains come to our world to try and tempt us to join their villain bosses.

- Also! I do not speak Japanese. Thankfully, there were a few that had English subtitles, but not a lot. These are just my interpretations of her based on the videos I've seen, along with my own personal ideas about his character. So, let's get started!

Veil 🔔

As the humanoid incarnation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame's greatest symbol, Veil was employed by Claude Frollo, to spread the word of God and keep her master in power.

Now, as for her backstory, unlike most of the recruiters who were either created through magic or born an animal, I believe it would be best for Veil to have been a simple human, rather than the bell coming to life. However, unlike Quasimodo, who was taken in and raised as a baby and was subsequently conditioned by Frollo, similar to a few other recruiters, Veil's backstory involves her own family.

Veil grew up very poor, living in a small house with her mother and father. Both of her parents were cruel, harsh, and clearly unfit to care for a child, but the only reason why they chose to have one was to use Veil for the sole purpose of child labor. At a young age, Veil was expected to do her part: cooking, cleaning, and being the target of her parents' frustration and anger throughout the day.

With no one to turn to, Veil found solace in the church, praying every day for the Lord to grant her the strength to keep going. Eventually, Frollo is introduced to her after a few kind-hearted members of the church take pity on her and call upon Archdeacon for help. Frollo, under moral obligation, takes the young girl in as his pupil.

Veil has been described as an almost "mysterious" figure by the three hosts of the show. A woman who is both sophisticated and quiet, yet loud, proud, and displays a lack of understanding or regard for, at least some, social cues. As a member of the church choir, she's displays her talent every chance she gets, much to the dismay of most of the recruiters.

Despite her "odd" behavior, she displays a cheerful disposition regarding her work as a recruiter, only outdone by Pretty Scar. Like the rest of the coworkers, she heavily disliked all of them in some way at first, especially with the way most of them would react negatively to her voice. Veil was not very social when they all first met, viewing most of them as "unworthy in God's eyes." However, she realizes how precious they are to her, even the ones she sees as rivals on the stage, and how hypocritical she was acting, as though she was somehow better than all of them. She can puff out like a peacock all she wants, but in reality, she is still that lost, scared little girl who longs for acceptance from somewhere, anywhere. Veil has friends now, true friends that she could easily call "family," and she will hold onto this family until her last curtain calls.

Monseigneur Claude Frollo: Her master and her father-figure, Veil has worshipped the Minister of Paris for most of her life, and very rarely questioned him, even though she is not as close to him as she wants to be. However, she adore him all the same. In her eyes, anyone who was punished by the Archdeacon of France, in her mind, it was rightfully deserved. After all, he was the proud, devoted enforcer of virtue and justice, how could he possibly commit any sins when it is the will of God? However, she had never really seen his "darker, unholy nature," of which a sadistic, savage beast laid dorment until he could sink his teeth into his victims once again. Veil hadn't seen her master for the delusional, bigoted madman that he was...until she came back from the recruitment program. With fresher eyes and a better understanding of the world, she returns back to her station, by her master, as she always should, and always would be, but it doesn't feel quite right anymore. She was no longer a blind follower, she had evolved, but just enough that she dared to ask Frollo for lesser sentences for the accused sinners; she wasn't strong enough yet. She still believed that her master was a righteous man. That was, until Esmerelda came along and Quasimodo grew stronger as a person. Will Veil see through Frollo's deception as a man of the Lord for what he really is? Or will she forever be a puppet at the hands of the corrupt church? Well, that is only up to her.

Quasimodo: Their relationship is...complicated. They have known each other since they were children, but that does not make them close at all. Due to his appearance and his job as the bell ringer, Quasimodo has hardly interacted with Veil. She was never awful or rude to him, but she was strict and acted coldly around him and other people. She does envy him, however, that he has a closer relationship with her master than she does. And that envy extends to Esmerelda, who has been granted numerous audiences with him. Due to her sheltered upbringing and brainwashing from Frollo, Veil doesn't understand why Quasimodo would betray their father for Esmerelda and his friends. That being said, she also doesn't truly understand why Frollo would want to kill Esmerelda when she hasn't committed any real crimes. Her master wouldn't kill an innocent for no reason! He wouldn't! ...Would he? Veil would feel very torn about this. Should she choose to renounce Frollo as her master and her father in the end, I see her and Quasimodo becoming very close, and together, they would help the town and bring the church to its former glory, where everyone is welcome.

Apple Poison: As the resident father/big brother figure, and one of the eldest among the recruiters, Veil respects Apple's authority for the most part. Occasionally, he may get on her nerves due his constant arguments with Jack Heart, and when he covers his ears when she's singing, but Apple, more often than not, praises her for her singing, which she very much appreciates. And anyone who can keep Jack on his toes, is an ally in Apple's book. They are not very close, but they have a genuine respect and understanding of each other.

Jack Heart: Jack is one of Veil's coworkers who really gets under her skin. They are rivals on the stage, and as much as Veil tries to be patient and humble about it, she equally wants to be seen and recognized for her talent, and Jack, the little mischievous bugger that he is, keeps getting in the way of that! Veil is often frustrated by Jack's antics, even once exclaiming that she "hates Jack more than dogs!" However, they do recognize each other's abilities, which they both reluctantly respect. They learn to tolerate each other more as the months and years go by, then they develop a more teasing, less violent relationship.

Malfie (Malfi): In comparison to Jack, Malfie does not nearly get on her nerves as much, but that's not saying a lot. They aren't "rivals" per se, since they mostly give off "close bickering cousins" energy. The two of them do seem to enjoy each other's company though, as Malfie seems to be one of the first to applaud her singing. And despite numerous instances with Veil knocking the ever-egotistical raven down a peg with the phrase: "Even though you're just Malfie," she appears content being around him. In summary, "close bickering cousins," is definitely the vibe you can expect from this pair.

Eight Foot Joe: According to Veil herself, she's not particularly involved with Joe, nor is she very close to him, but she doesn't hate him. Although she doesn't appreciate the octopus covering his ears every time he hears her sing (It's not his fault, Veil. He's sensitive.) Plus, I'm positive that with all of the mythical beings of the sea, he's had to have encountered sirens before. Moreover, there have been times when Joe lacks the spirit of the season and Veil tugs on his arm to get him to follow directions, much to her slight annoyance. But hey! Joe is one of the more competent members of the group, so she can't complain to much about him.

Mr. Dalmatia: Unfortunately for both Veil and Dalma, Veil has dog allergies, so her bias against the former dalmatian is most likely due to her ailment. That, or the fact that Dalma likes to tease Veil by stealing her bell to play with it. Or his and Jack's pranks against her. Or him constantly going near and bothering her in his dog form when he knows about her allergies... Okay, so maybe there are a few good reasons as to why their relationship is pretty tenuous. But! Like it or not, Veil is a member of Dalmatia's pack, a family that they both care for dearly, and that includes each other. They find a way to tolerate one another as the years go by. For example, Veil's lullabies, if they're quiet enough (again, sensitive ears), put him right to sleep. Give it up for the epitome of a pesky sibling relationship.

Pretty Scar (Mzuri): As stated before with many of the recruiters, Pretty Scar is not the most popular among them, with Veil being no exception. Veil acts distant around the hyena, simply addressing her as "Scar," while the latter refers to her as "Aunt Chillin', Chillin', possibly referring to Veil more cold and standoffish demeanor. So suffice to say, they are not on great terms. However, Mzuri's charm and efforts to get along with Veil, warms the bell ringer's heart. Just a tad. Similar to Dalma, Veil's lullabies are one of the only things that can soothe the savage beast, with her singing reminding Mzuri of the few songs she remembers of her childhood. Again, these two may not be close, but Pretty Scar views Veil as her older sister and a member of her cackle, so she's going to need to get used to it.

Ms. Hades: Another coworker who she views as a respectable authority figure. Veil appears to be on good terms with Ms. Hades, even though the fire maiden often questions Veil's devotion to her master, as Frollo clearly thinks highly of himself as a god-like figure, to which he is not. In her infinite lifetime, Ms. Hades has seen countless mortals fall to the depths of Tartarus for their crimes against humanity, most of which were driven by an uncountable amount of pride; Ms. Hades is simply offering Veil a warning in advance. Other than that, the older of the two helps Veil whenever she can, whether that be in advice, or when Veil struggles with her poses. All in all, they are great friends!

Lady Hock (Hook): Her own partner in crime! Lady H is Veil's best friend and most trusted confidant. The pair are often seen displaying affection for one another: linking arms, hugging, and Hock is Veil's biggest cheerleader when she sings for the crowds, and perhaps even join her! Should Jack and Dalma take their pranking streak too far, these gals are the first to jump on the opportunity to get them back. In a way, Hock inspires Veil, she isn't completely devoted to her captain as she is with her Master Frollo. Through her companionship with Hock and the others, this all may convince Veil to cut ties with Frollo...maybe someday...

Faja (Farja): If Hock is Veil's best friend, then Faja comes at a close second. Despite Faja more annoying and/or troublesome tendencies, including her lack of understanding of magic, her constant fights with Malfie, and her general Iago-like attitude, she and Veil are on surprisingly good terms. Perhaps it was their common goal of impressing their masters and earning a place alongside them that brought them together, maybe it was the opposites attract dynamic they have as one of the loudest and quietest members of the team, but they just...work. Veil may be distant and accidentally sarcastic due to her lack of social skills, but she means well and encourages Faja to do her best. Especially if it's against Malfie. Faja, meanwhile, is as equally supportive and appreciates Veil's patience during her more moody moments or crazy outbursts. What more can I say, they just work!

Overall: In spite of Veil's initial distaste for her colleagues, she finds herself more and more thankful for the friendships she was denied long ago as a child. Her distance towards them was not truly out of disapproval, but out of fear for rejection and her craving closeness of any kind with anyone, but not understanding how or why.

Regardless, she cares for each of them dearly, even if she has a difficult time expressing that to certain recruiters. Their time together and the lessons learned along the way may not be in vain when she inevitably returns. Should Veil overcome her sense of unworthiness, she could move forward and bring honor to the bloodstained church once again when her master meets his well-deserved fate. The question is: Can she surpass that fear?

Recently, I’ve been listening to Twisted Wonderland English voice headcanons, and I agree with some but not others but that’s the point of headcanons. They’re always someone’s thoughts, and sometimes they fit perfectly! So, I wanted to give my headcanons for the Twisted Wonderland cast.

I chose Max because I agreed with a few other headcanons! Max, during his performances as Itto and Ryuji, has a very playful and mischievous tone of voice and as Saitama, he can perfect a voice that’s nonchalant, a bit bored, and blunt which summarizes Ace as a whole. When thinking of Saitama, I remembered his scream when he punched Vaccine Man with one punch and got mad and when he told Genos to get to the point, and that could fit with Ace as he signed a contract with Azul and had a sea anemone growing out of his head and got crushed by a cauldron.

Deuce Spade — Johnny Yong Bosch

Most known for:

Vash the Stampede in TRIGUN (original from 1998) and TRIGUN: Stampede (2023 reboot)

Lelouch Lamperouge in Code Geass

Ichigo Kurosaki in Bleach

Personally, as a girl who loves both TRIGUN shows, I loved the way Johnny performed; as Vash in both versions, he maintained a kind and gentle voice while also being silly and giving out the best surprised shouts or nervous chuckles at the right moments. This would make Deuce very memorable as Deuce has a bit of Vash’s personality towards his friends but still maintains a little of his delinquency from his past and acts more of a tough guy when certain challenges arise such as when his opportunity to play in Spelldrive came, but after playing Ichigo, I doubt that would be an issue to give a rough voice.

Trey Clover — Alejandro Saab

This was another one I agreed with as Alejandro is the king of voice range! Trey is the calmest yet one of the firmest vice housewardens, and sometimes can go out of character a bit when it comes to brushing teeth. Alejandro fits this as I heard him play the most serious yet punniest Genshin Impact character, Cyno, who breaks character to break the tension in the room through jokes, but he is also capable of being a gentle soul who comforts like Miyamura or someone as calculating and diligent as Jing Yuan in Honkai Star Rail.

Cater Diamond — Kaiji Tang

Most known for:

Osamu Dazai in Bungo Stray Dogs

Satoru Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen

Gengo in Naruto Shippuden

I won’t lie; finding Cater’s voice actor was difficult until I stumbled upon Kaiji who voices Osamu and Gojo, two playful and supernaturally powerful men with quips and mischief. When Osamu said thanks to Chuuya after telling him to go into enemy fire to die, I knew this fit Cater too well as Osamu, like Cater, is depressed but keeps a smile on his face with a fun, joking tone with any situation, and like Gojo, Cater is a bit flirty (not womanizer flirty). Although he might have a little more of a feminine sounding voice because it is canon in the Japanese version that he is bisexual, I'm sure it would still be fitting to have Kaiji as his actor.

Riddle Rosehearts — Billy Kametz

Not only was Billy Kametz talented with line delivery, but he brings out the personality of his character that playing Riddle would have been magnificent. It is unfortunate that he passed on, but I still appreciate his work. What really made me choose him for Riddle was his performance as Anai in the Sanrio anime Aggretsuko because Anai was one to get easily sensitive over everything, feeling as if he was being personally attacked because he didn't like how one of his coworkers phrased their words to him. Because Billy played such a stickler, his voice would have suited Riddle in better ways than imagined with other voice actors, especially when he gets upset or angry or even overblots.

✨ i dont know much about demon slayer, introduce me to it!

oh boy i can certainly try my best!! this will be somewhere between an Introduction and What I Like About It <33 so basically:

demon slayer is a manga/anime series set in taisho era japan (aka ~1910), revolving around a thousand year conflict between Demons, folklorish man-eating creatures turned from normal humans; and Demon Slayers, a secretive group of swordsmen sworn to protect humanity from this supernatural threat.

the story revolves around two siblings-- Tanjiro and Nezuko Kamado, and their struggle stumbling into this conflict after Nezuko is turned into a demon.

on paper, it's a pretty typical shounen anime-- a very straightfoward "good-vs-evil" plot with a heavy focus on swordfighting. however, in my eyes, its charm comes less from its actual in-present-text plot, and more on the sheer amount of love put into so many little details in so many places. i'll be keeping this as entry-level spoiler-free as i can, but i'll elaborate on a few of my personal favorite bits! under the cut:

ill disclaim that i dont watch a Lot of anime-- in fact, this is pretty much. the Only anime i watch. but the art style + animation of this series is absolutely fucking Stunning. every single frame of it looks like it could be its own illustration, and this traditional brush-like line weight sticks around for the entirety of the show. not only this, but a lot of the sillier, more doodle-esque panels in the manga get translated into the anime, and it is insanely charming.

its ability to handle atmosphere and backgrounds is just as strong, and it only gets better the longer the show goes on. also, circling back to the line weight, there's a lot of effects like Fire and Rushing Water, and not only does that too carry the same lining style, but its constantly in motion. its genuinely such a treat to watch.

and god, the voice acting. (DISCLAIMER ive listened to both the english and japanese versions and Heavily Heavily prefer the japanese voice acting. i wont elaborate too much because this will get Long but you gotta trust me: youre gonna wanna pick the subbed version.) the voice actors do such a genuinely stunning job at both conveying their roles, and also conveying tone and emotion. demon slayer is a tragedy and jesus fucking christ do they fucking commit to it. if a character is crying, they are going to Cry. if they are screaming, they are going to fucking scream. it's very intense at times, but god is it so fucking good.

tanjiro's voice directing is just. [waves hands around] SO GOOD. he's described by another character to have "a sound so kind it makes you want to cry," and. shit dude! theyre right! he's got such a soft and kind inotation to his voice, and yet he still has the range to do [waves hand again] All The Rest Of That. AND THERE'S ONE ANTAGONIST. in season 2, there's a demon that has three entirely different voice tones, and it is genuinely chilling to hear them switch between them just. on the drop of a hat. you have to trust me. you are just going to have to trust me, its SO good.

> Narrative Details.

this one's A Lot. theres something about the tone of the story itself, the way it Carries itself and its relationship to its setting, that is just. so delightful to take in. it's got this weird split between the realistic/historical and the fantastical/mythological.

demons are real, pseudo-unkillable, oftentimes physically montrous, and possess nigh magical powers ranging from typical elemental effects to Pots That Eat You. however, they're also simultaneously staunchly stemmed in the Physical and Tangible-- theyre treated as entirely different species with entirely different biology. their abilities stem from their Blood-- as does their seeming immortality, which is a hypercharged version of cellular regeneration, needing to be fueled by their altered diet.

slayers are nigh-superhumanly powerful swordfighters with ridiculous amounts of physical strength and stamina, using techniques bedazzled with imagery of flames, thunder, rushing water. however, the biggest part of the series is focus on the training of demon slayers-- focus on breathing and allowing your body to function at peak efficiency-- sometimes even pushing past its typical limits-- each form of swordfighting having an entirely different physical execution. those that reach the highest levels of skill are able to practically conjure the look and feel of the elements their techniques are named after. hell, the focus on their swords is shockingly detailed as well!

its a delicate balance that is genuinely so much fun to watch and analyze-- in fact, some of the characters' looks are even given folklore-esque explanations for things like hair and eye color. it's delightful!

> Characters.

in my honest opinion, this is probably my favorite part of the entire series. there's so many things i could elaborate on, and it's all presented with such shocking simplicity! it all feels very genuine! they all, honestly, feel like People!

the character design is, comparatively, very simple. even so, so many of the characters remain genuinely iconic and easy to recognize at a glance.

and then, their actual characters. the way they act. This is the bit i love the most. aside from background characters and the such, there isn't any character that feels entirely one-note. the protagonists are genuinely so lovingly written, and theyre so so easy to get attached to. tanjiro is genuinely one of my absolute favorite protagonist characters, not just because of the way he is written, but the way that you get to see him Think and Grow. he's defined by his kindness, but is staunch in his motivations.

as well, demon slayer is very good with character introductions. it has this funny thing that it does where it introduces a character in such a way that makes you go ". am i supposed to like this one??" presenting them in an almost one-note stereotypical fashion, sometimes even in an antagonistic fashion-- but episodes down the line when the stakes raise their head, you look back and suddenly realize: oh god. i care about this fucker. if anything happens to them im going to actually cry.

its such an interesting way of introducing characters, especially the way it completely reframes the way a character Acts at any given moment in a way that makes them painfully human. you really start to feel for them!

all in all, the charm in demon slayer lies in its worldbuilding, its characters, and especially: its Themes. god i could go on for hours about the links between characters in regards to the themes it chooses to present and delve into, but. this is already long enough. but i'll just say: it handles all of these things ridiculously well.

what does it mean to lose yourself? how do people interact with the concept of death and entropy, of loss? legacy, family-- how do these ties push you on, weigh you down? what will we do for the people we care about-- how far are we willing to go to protect the ones we love? what was given for us to make it this far? who will carry on our message when we are gone?

bonds between siblings, between friends, between those we choose to protect. what makes them real? what are we willing to fight for? to die for? loss is inherent to being alive, but so is joy. we're temporary, we're fragile, we're unstoppable-- we are all painfully human, and thats what makes our lives worth living, no matter how dark, no matter how "insignificant," we're worth it because we're together, we're worth it because, inherently, we are alive. and that is worth protecting.

Bakugo's head felt like it had exploded, turned to mush, and shoved in a food processor before being pushed back into his head. His wife wasn't much better.

"Morning," Y/n Bakugo said in English, too tired to translate into her husband's native language so early in the morning. Since both she and her husband were bilingual, it wasn't an issue.

Katsuki responded with a grunt. Y/n opened her phone to check for texts from her family who still lived in America. "Sleep well?" Katsuki asked her in English, and Y/n smiled. She loved it when he spoke English in his sleepy accent. His voice was deep, which Y/n had to admit, turned her on.

"Yeah, you?" Y/n asked as she and Katsuki both got out of bed, making their own sides and getting dressed as they talked.

Katsuki snorted. "You kidding? I'm more hungover than a bat. I can't even see straight."

"Well, if you can't even be straight, why should your eyesight be?"

Katsuki made a noise and pulled Y/n's favorite shirt of his over his head. "I've got the day off today, what about you?"

Y/n nodded, then tilted her head. "The kids are still asleep, you wan-"

As soon as the words came out of her mouth she heard "Mama!" Y/n made a very unflattering noise as she walked quickly down the hall to her twin daughter's room. Noise also started coming from her son's room.

"Hang on, Kenji!" Y/n yelled as she speed-walked into her daughters' room. The blonde twins were four years old and had begun to walk. Chaos, of course, was the only result. "No, Takara! Don't eat your sister's hair! Ahma! Calm down- no! Don't go towards the window!"

Kenji, who was nine, had come into his sister's room now. "Can I help, mama?" he asked in English, motioning to his younger sister Ahma.

"Please, Kenji. Go take Ahma downstairs, then I'll deal with Taka, okay?" Kenji nodded dutifully, taking his younger sister into his arms and marching to the stairs.

Rangling Takara was much easier with Kenji's help, so Y/n was downstairs in just a few minutes with her daughter on her hip.

All three of her children had inherited Katsuki's blonde hair, but Kenji was already a miniature - but thankfully more mild-mannered - version of his father. Complete with vermillion eyes and untamable, spiky blonde hair.

"I made breakfast," Katsuki said, patting Kenji on the head and ruffling his already messy hair. Y/n smiled at her husband.

"I'm gonna run a few errands, but I'll be back in an hour or so. Think you can hang on for that long?" Katsuki chuckled and nodded, with Y/n walking quickly to the door so she could spend as much time with her kids as possible.

When Y/n got back, Katsuki was asleep in their giant armchair, with Ahma in one arm, and Kenji holding Takara next to him in the other. Y/n grabbed her phone and took a picture, uploading it to Instagram.

'My four kids' she titled the post to her Instagram, with Heroes from America, Japan, and all her friends liking and commenting on her post quickly after.

Rock Hard: AKA Eijiro Kirishima

Kiri, my beautiful, lovely baby is the most amazing dad.

Fight me, bitch.

His kids are super well-behaved and get a ton of attention from dad. He's the kind of dad who's going to come to his kid's school to drop off lunch in his Pro Hero outfit because he knows his kids love to see it.

Girl dad. Three kids, two with black hair, one with your color hair. (If your hair is black ignore that) Absolutely whipped for his princesses.

Tea parties once a month with your youngest, tree climbing with your middle daughter, and your eldest gets to do his makeup.

Of course, this has led to issues. Such as Kiri going to interviews and fighting villains wearing - to name a few - pink tutus, blue eyeshadow, the world's brightest blue lipstick, a blonde wig, and a red dress.

One particular day that still mortifies Kirishima to think about happened when your oldest was about nine. She's a daddy's girl and looks just like him without the red hair. She also loves the color coral, which clashes terribly with Eiji's red hair.

She had put pink and coral makeup all over his face while he was taking a nap, and he didn't realize he had on makeup until he had frantically driven halfway to his interview so he wouldn't be late.

To top off this horrific day, the interviewer hadn't been able to stop laughing long enough to ask him anything other than, "Who the hell did that?"

But he loves his girls and would do anything for them.

Electric Love: AKA Denki Kaminari

Pikachu over here is an absolute softy for his kids.

He has thirteen-year-old twins. A boy and a girl. He loves them equally and showers praise on them at all times.

Both have bright yellow hair and fairly similar quirks to their dad. But what really makes everyone around them know, 'yep, those are Kaminari's', is when they goof off.

Now, Kami's funny story is fairly recent.

His daughter got her period a few months ago, and he, being the idiotic but loveable trainwreck he is, called you because he thought your daughter was dying.

"Doctor Kaminari Y/n speaking, how may I help you?"

"Y/n! I think Yukina's dying! She and Seiko got home from school and she was bleeding. From... there."

You could hear your husband hyperventilating on the other end of the phone. "Kami, she got her period, she's not dying. Bring her over to the hospital in your car, I took the train to work today so we can stop at the store to get Yuki some pads or tampons, depending on what she wants, and we'll go by her favorite Ramen place to grab supper when my shift ends."

You could hear Seiko telling his younger sister it'd be okay. You and Denki had raised them right.

Although how you'd never know.

Blast 'em With Kindness: AKA Katsuki Bakugo

In case you couldn't tell, that title is sarcastic.

Just like Bakugo and his eight-year-old. You could look at that little girl and think she was Mitsuki in disguise. Your daughter, Kiko, was not an only child, but she was your only child who looked like you and Katsuki.

MHA Boys Headcannons of When You Watch Their Favorite Movie

Hawks: Hawks doesn’t get a lot of time to spend with you, being a Pro Hero and all, so he cherishes these moments. He’d definitely grab a bowl of popcorn and some sodas and sit down with his wings circled around you. 

He’s the kind of guy who would say he hated romance movies but secretly love them. So you would sit down and watch his favorite movie together while you snuggled and probably fall asleep on the couch. 

Todoroki: Todoroki didn’t have the best family life, so he loves movies like Cheaper By The Dozen. He can’t cook shit, so you’d have to make the food for him. And he would enjoy every moment of the movie. And since he has school during the day you would most definitely curl up and fall asleep on his shoulder while he stroked your hair. 

Bakugo: This man can cook, so he would be making the snacks. Scratch that, you’re getting an entire meal while you watch this movie. You’d cuddle up together, but if anyone walked in he’d push you off and yell at them. 

Kirishima: Kiri would take you to a movie theater and buy you all the snacks you wanted. He’d sit next to you and pay more attention to you than the actual movie anyway, so if you ask him anything afterwards about the movie he’s not really gonna know much. 

Denki: Denki gets distracted easily, so you’re probably going to watch half a kids movie and then start watching YouTube. But Denki would hug you and thank you for spending time with you. And then charge your phone and computer just to go stupid to make you laugh.

Your Quirk: You're basically Mic but with quieter powers. Your quirk is called Megaphone, it allows you to yell at amplified levels. The only problem? You can lose your voice very quickly. 

It wasn't that Y/n resented her husband for being a Pro Hero. She always wanted to be one but had found her quirk more useful in the Disaster Squad, a set of five or six individuals with quirks that could help in a large-scale emergency. She had created it with the help of her husband, Keigo Takami. Aka, Pro Hero Hawks. 

She also didn't resent his trainee, Fumikage Tokoyami, for asking Keigo to help him train. That was kind of his job, after all. And she was glad she was currently in the main dorms of UA. Because she really needed their help. 

Y/n was eight and a half months pregnant. That, in itself, was her problem. Because her water had broken early. This was her first baby, so she had no clue what to expect. Fortunately, Momo Yaoyorozu had gotten a hold of Todoroki's older sister, Fuyumi, who thankfully was off of work today. 

"Just breath," Fuyumi said as Y/n sat distressed in a chair. She hadn't gotten any contractions yet, but what really worried her was that Keigo wasn't picking up his phone. At all. And Y/n knew that Keigo wouldn't break his word to her and go on patrol, would he? 

"Momo, can you call Tokoyami for me? Kei isn't picking up his phone," Momo looked confused for a second before registering that Kei meant Pro Hero Hawks. 

"Okay, he should have his phone on," Momo said, clicking a button on her phone as it began to ring. Soon after, a voicemail message played. Hello, you've reached Fumikage Tokoyami. Please note that as I have not picked up the phone I'm probably on patrol. Please leave your name and number and I will try to get back to you as soon as possible. Click!

"Tokoyami, this is Momo. Call me back when you can," Momo said before hanging up. 

Fuyumi's phone began to buzz. "Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry, but this is my principal. He's probably calling about one of my students, I should-" Fuyumi started before Y/n cut her off. 

"I get it, it's work. Go talk to him, and if you can come back, please do, if you can't I understand."

Fuyumi smiled slightly before picking up her phone and quickly walking out of the room. 

The reason Y/n was even here was because of her work. She was here talking to the students about her program, which Momo and Ochaco had already been helping her with. However, she still didn't know everyone in Class 1-A. 

A small boy with purple balls on his head walked in and immediately stopped when he saw Y/n and some of the girls from 1-A. Is this a teacher's child? She wondered as he walked towards them. 

Momo made a gagging sound at the sight of the boy. "Mineta, get out. We have better things to do them be harassed."

Harassed? "Momo? Who is this?" Y/n asked the teen next to her as Momo glared, slightly uncharacteristically at Mineta. 

"A perv who unfortunately goes to UA." 

"And who might you be, pretty lady?" Mineta asked, walking up to the chair Y/n sat in. 

"Someone you don't want to mess with. My name is Soundclap, but you might also know me from my husband. Pro Hero Hawks," Y/n said, glaring daggers at Mineta. If the girls she worked with didn't like him, she didn't like him either. Mineta yelped and ran away. Momo laughed. 

"Thank you, Sensei Sou-" Before Momo could finish her sentence her phone began to ring. "Oh! It's Tokoyami. Hello?" 

Momo put Tokoyami on speakerphone. "Momo? What's wrong? I got your message. Sensei Hawks and I are on patrol." 

"Well, he's not supposed to be," Y/n said, lowering her voice and clenching her fists. 

"What? Why?" 

"Because I'm in LABOR!" Y/n yelled through the phone, using her quirk at the end of her sentence.

"Because I'm in LABOR!" Whoever was on the phone with Tokoyami, Hawks could hear them yelling through the phone so loudly that Tokoyami had to remove the phone from his ear and put it on speakerphone.

MHA Boys + Men When You're on Your Period Headcanons

I'm on my period and my boyfriend is on a work trip. And so, I have turned to my magical and animated boyfriends. Slight Spy X Family spoilers, plus some really stupid Naruto references because I think Anime-ception is a thing.

And also I just started watching Spy X Family and holy cow! Why did no one recommend this to me sooner?

Boom Boom Boy: AKA Katsuki Bakugo

Let's get one thing straight. Mitsuki taught this boy well. He knows how everything down there works, and he knows how pads and tampons work. Hell, he even knows about period cups.

He does not, however, know how to use this knowledge in a public setting. His mother, also, did not have bad mood swings during her period. You, on the other hand...

"Damn you! What's wrong with you Loid?!" You yell as you throw the empty wrapper of your favorite candy. Suddenly tears start to flow down your cheeks. "He does care!"

Bakugo is standing there, watching you, trying to figure out what to do. Mina, or mom? Mina, or mom? As he stares at his phone he realizes Mina is probably the better option. "Hello?" Mina answers, surprisingly energetic for the late time.

"Help," is all Bakugo says. Twenty minutes later Mina is knocking on his apartment door, Jirou, Denki, and Kirishima in tow.

"I brought her favorites. Along with these," Mina says, allowing her three companions to step inside. Each held one to two shopping bags.

An hour later and Bakugo has been debriefed. He's as grumpy as you, but at least now he knows why. I mean, what man - actual father or not - lets his wife and daughter be treated like that? Shame on you, Loid Forger.

Mind Control Man: AKA Hitoshi Shinsou

Hitoshi, unlike Bakugo, is not the most well-versed in women. Or people in general, for that matter. He'll be supportive, but he'll be shit at it at first.

Mood swings? He thinks you hate him. Hormonal acne? He offers you a facial. Not wearing white? He tells you you look great in white. Not sitting down? He tells you, "Your feet'll get tired."

He's trying, though. He'll even ask Aizawa for help. I personally headcanon Aizawa keeps period stuff in his desk for the girls.

If you do tell Shinsou you're on your period he's going to be googling until three in the morning. He's going to help you out. He'll even get pads and tampons. By asking Aizawa.

"Here you go, Hitoshi," Aizawa says, handing Shinsou a small box of things. Denki, who was also in the room runs up.

"What was that?" He asks, looking at Shinsou's retreating frame. "I want one!"

Denki now keeps pads and tampons in his dorm room.

If you two stay together and have kids he'll definitely teach them about periods. Male or female, so his kids don't go through what he did when trying to figure out how to help.

Bird Brain: AKA Keigo Takami

Keigo's an adult man, he has female co-workers. He knows how periods work. He also knows how to be a little shit any day of the week, but when he forgets you're on your period and tries to do something annoying, let's just say he sleeps at the office for a while.

Picture the scene. You're watching Naruto in bed, eating a chocolate bar when Hawks comes in. You're on your period, and he would know that if he looked at the red dot on today's date on the calendar. But he doesn't, and that's where his problem arises.

Because you're about to lose what sanity you have left over anime, and Hawks wants to have fun. So as you're diligently watching your computer, cozy on your bed with your favorite blanket, Hawks decides what to do.

"Honey, I have a meeting. You need to come, and since it's Halloween soon it's a costume party. I'm going to dress up as my amazing self."

You knew the bull he was trying to pull. "I'll wear my devil costume," you say, walking over to your closet and pulling out a red and black body con dress, red heels, and horns.

While not comfortable, it was nice to see the bird brain dumbfounded for once as you pulled off your horns before walking into the room, stealing the eyes of all his male (and a few of his female) colleagues.

A comparison of the English and Japanese versions.

[The Japanese version turns Joshua into an anime character lol. In the English version Joshua has a personality.] This reaction is very funny. English-speaking people feel that the English version of Joshua has a personality, and the Japanese version of Joshua's cold, cold acting lacks individuality.

“The English version feels the brotherhood and the passion inside The Japanese version is calm and you can feel Joshua's growth since childhood." He feels that the English version is a hot-blooded performance. For the Japanese version, he even touches on the change of growth.

English-speaking people feel that the performance of the Japanese version is uncharacteristic and boring.

Japanese-speaking people feel that the acting in the English version is over-acting and artificial.

They both feel uncomfortable with the differences between different languages. Why? I feel that it is a ripple effect of the influence of the whole culture that has been popular until now. I don't know much about English-speaking culture, so I can't go into detail. So I feel the influence of Hollywood movies, Spider-Man, Batman, etc. The job of localization is to provide works that match the culture. Therefore, it is necessary to know the culture that was popular in the country as much as possible. I think it's probably the influence of Arnold Schwarzenegger's hot-blooded acting. Please let me know if you have more information.

On the other hand, I'm Japanese, so I know a lot about Japanese anime. So from here on I can give you a very detailed insight.

The Japanese version of Joshua is unusually calm. Why did you act like that? I think it was probably the influence of Hikaru Midorikawa, who played Kaede Rukawa in Slam Dunk at first. He became very popular because of his very calm acting. Sugiyama noriaki, who played Sasuke in Naruto, acted like rukawa kaede. Both became popular. I feel that these two are probably the most influential.

On the other hand, hot-blooded acting was popular in the Japanese-speaking world too,

Claude, the main character in Star Ocean Second Evolution, is very cool acting. I had a feeling this was like rukawa kaede.

However, I was very surprised by the crackling and noisy voice of the PS version of Star Ocean Second Story in 1995.

However, I gradually realized that this excessively hot-blooded performance was influenced by Masako Nozawa, who played Goku in Dragon Ball.

Masako Nozawa screams in a raspy voice. Perhaps the PS version of Claude was influenced by it. Masako Nozawa is more audible and gives a great performance.

And why did Masako Nozawa decide to play Goku? The creator of Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama, watched an anime called Ikkape Taisho. And when I heard the performance of Masako Nozawa, who plays the main character, I was very moved.

So Masako Nozawa was nominated by toriyamaakira and was selected as the voice actress for the role of Goku.

I'm very familiar with the Japanese version of the acting, but I don't know about the works that are popular in the English-speaking world. so i would be happy if you could tell me

I also don’t speak Japanese (I’ve only ever tried to learn a little and can recognize bits and pieces, here and there).

I think the one thing to point out about Trigun compared to other anime is that I assume and have heard that the characters would naturally be speaking English.

In a lot of 98 anime fanficfion, I’ve seen more use of Japanese honorifics like in the dubbed version, so Milly calling Meryl senpai, etc. Personally, I find it a little jarring when it’s used around a work written in English. (But I’ve also written fanfic for say, Detective Conan, and keep honorifics in because the character are mostly Japanese, speaking Japanese.) I haven’t see as much of the added on Japanese to newer fanfics though. I think because the English versions are so much more accessible, fans are stuck with subbed versions.

Although in English, there isn’t such a distinction between casual and formal speech, there’s still subtleties that we can use to be more polite or professional. For casual speech, using profanity. slang or not using proper grammar is more common. How we talk to our friends versus our boss at work is usually a little different we just don’t necessarily have those different ways of using verbs or pronouns that Japanese does.

It’s really interesting if you compare Vash’s speech between 98 and TriStamp because the VA is Johnny Yong Bosch in both. You can tell how much softer he is in TriStamp. Plus, he’s had years and years of voice acting experience. Both performances are amazing even if they are so different. I’m interested in seeing if he’ll use more of the 98 Vash flair in season 2.

Wolfwood didn’t really have an accent in the 98 anime either. But the characterization feels very different in a lot of ways. 98 Wolfwood was much kinder even if he was still a cynic. We didn’t see any of the experimentation backstory, so it makes sense he’s not as an a**hole. He got a lot more time to spend interacting with children so we get to see that big brother side a lot more.

In TriStamp S1, I think it’s way more clear he was forced to grow up way too fast. His mind doesn’t quite match his body. Like it’s pointed out, he’s like a grumpy teenager, and in a way we don’t really know his age, so it’s possible he literally is still in his mid-late teens…

I’ve notice Kansai-ben doesn’t tend to get carried over into English dialects in dubs consistently. There’s probably some industry standard how they handle that that not privy to. Sometimes you’ll see writers using “ya” instead of “your” or clipping -ing verbs like “ jumpin’ ” or full out writing with an American southern accent. There’s definitely a lot of small nuances in American dialects, some are more noticeable than others, like northeastern vs southern, or like a Baltimore accent vs a Philadelphia accent or slang. Just look up how people pronounce “water” it’s very amusing haha.

Meryl, similarly there’s a difference between 98 and TriStamp in that Meryl in 98 is much more uptight and easy to frustrate but often has more of an air of seniority as she’s further in her career. Although she has instances of breaking that professional, mature composure because Vash drives her bonkers. 🙃

TriStamp, you can tell they also made her feel much younger, she wants to be taken seriously but is quicker to be freaked out or grossed out, so her immaturity at the beginning shows more and then gets less near the end of the season once she sees more crazy things. Overall, her speech does feel more casual than formal, probably especially compared to the Japanese formal speech.

Legato… I think I have an unusual take on Legato. I think most fans find him kinda cool and dangerous. Yeah he is powerful, but to me, he is umm really tragic backstory that makes his character kinda pitiful because just all his screws are loose. He’s more insane than Knives if you ask me. I think TriStamp gave him more of that psycho vibe that matches the manga, while 98 made him actually feel more sinister.

I think there’s a lot of instances where the dub translation really comes across much more strongly. Someone else mentioned this, but the dub lines where Wolfwood tries to say the last rites after burying the station attendants is sooo much better than the subs.

Similarly with some of Knives dialogue, the biblical lines translate better in the dub IMO. In general with 98, he had so little screen time that it’s hard to compare. We all know how sadistic he was towards Vash, but he was also such a baby when he got angry or hurt. I’ve read the TriStamp directors wanted to make Knives feel more sympathetic, like you almost want to say, “what if he’s right?” But if you really rationalize him, he’s got such an inflated ego spitting out biblical rationale to everything for his own benefit.

And as far as other bits of dub vs sub, some of the other jokes were translated differently to cater to 98 fans in the dub, like Vash joking about the price of one bullet vs a dozen donuts. Roberto’s dialogue came off much more clearly deadpan humor where it’s hard to get that across with Japanese VO and subs. Like “Hundred Spoons” most of us died a little laughing. It’s easier to tell how world weary but sharp he is, where the Japanese version it’s harder to pick up on the subtleties of him not just being an old fart 😅

I think I covered most of the points you brought up but if I forgot anything I’ll come back and edit this heh.

So I finally found a way to watch tristamp in English dub (I only ever watched the series in Japanese). I haven’t done any deeper thoughts and analysis, and I’m only halfway through the series but here’s my impression so far:

- I love English dub Vash, especially his gibberish noises, such a chaotic dumbass (affectionate), and although some of his jokes and mannerism didn’t translate as well as I hoped, they did a very good job. They deserved two dozen donuts. (although if you hold me at gunpoint and ask me to choose English or Japanese Vash I will choose the Japanese version with a thin margin because I have personal bias towards Matsuoka Yoshitsugu [he’s from where I live lol, and I’m a big fan])

- I’m also in love with how they play Legato and Roberto, especially Legato, I was surprised by the lack of the feeling out of place (Is that the right word? sorry my brain suddenly stopped working in English) that you usually have when you hear a show dubbed in another language you’re not used to hearing. So smooth. And they nailed the drunkle speech with Roberto.

- I honestly was disappointed with the lack of accent in Wolfwood’s speech (maybe I just didn’t hear it correctly? Idk) because he speaks in heavy Kansai dialect in Japanese, even when he was a child (also casting Hosoya Yoshimasa really emphasized the accent). A huge missed opportunity on the English dub, in my opinion. I was expecting Wolfwood with a heavy Southern accent or something. And on that note they also missed the chance to add some dialect for the worm hunters on episode 4.

- English dub Meryl feels mature and a lot more pulled together to me compared to the Japanese version, which sounds very pristine and innocent until she starts learning about the world. It makes her a little… out of place for me who’s used to Meryl speaking in a very polite formal Japanese to everyone (even when she’s yelling in rage or when she’s cursing people). I think it suits Meryl from ‘98 anime more than tristamp Meryl. Probably because you can’t really translate her distinct way of speaking accurately, it’s not anyone’s fault, just a matter of different language. But I guess I like the Japanese version better for Meryl. I just love the way she speaks, shame there’s no English equivalent to her speech style.

- I don’t like English dub Nai. I’m 100% going with the Japanese version in this. Not the performance, though, I know translations are really hard and I do think the English VA did a great job, but as someone who’s used to how Nai speak in Japanese, the dub just… didn’t feel right. In Japanese Nai speaks in a relatively rougher manner compared to Vash (in how he chooses his words, also the subtle but different way he talks to humans and to Vash) and it didn’t show as much in the English dub. And his pretentious speech that sounds like some people from the church near my house doesn’t get carried to the English dub, I guess. In English he just sounds like a scary villain to me, while in Japanese I can feel his emotions and (warped) love towards Vash just from his words. I saw someone pointing out that Nai refers to the dependent plants with feminine pronouns, and it’s even more prominent and emphasized in the Japanese version. They’re not wrong. Maybe in English it can come across as a bit misogynistic(?), I don’t know, but I like how he does this in Japanese, because to me it feels like he’s always trying to refer to them as “persons” and not “things”, although his treatment towards them is contradictory.

This ended up longer than I expected but overall I enjoyed the English dub and I love analyzing different languages. I wanna know how it feels for people who know absolutely zero Japanese watching the series in English dub and in Japanese with English subtitles. I know that there were differences in the subtitles and the dub but for me I can’t compare English sub and dub because I’d just go with my Japanese interpretation if I watch the subbed version (or I’d rather just ditch the subtitle altogether because sometimes it’s making my brain confused when I speak both languages).

Also to people who write Trigun fanfics in English, where do you base the character speech from? I don’t know how to translate Japanese dialects, so Wolfwood, for example, is very difficult for me to write in English.

do you have any voice claims/preferred voice actors dedede, meta knight and bandanna dee? (bandanna dee doesn't apply to the second option, i think??)

there was another ask about how i see dedede's voice and i think i will just try answering this one

bare with me, i don't know too many voice actors by name so i can't say that X person totally should voice X character, i will just explain the way i "hear" their voices in my head

i might anger? a lot of people but i can't imagine dedede with 4kids anime voice. this has nothing to do with my opinion on the anime version of the character, it just goes at complete odds with how i imagine dedede.

dedede is a person who tries to act aloof but is very soft at heart. his voice should be low, but has this all encompassing warmth to it, which 4kids voice just doesn't have.

he tries to sound threatening, but whenever he tries to, he just sounds goofy, look no further than his "roars" he does in modern games.

he can sound threatening though... and this is when his voice is completely calm. when he is so beyond furious, he can't even put effort into sounding bombastic anymore. this is when you know you are gonna get it.

meta knight should have an accent. i won't say which, but he just should have SOME sort of accent, to emphasize that he's been places and that he has mysterious past, however, no need to comically overdid it. make it just enough.

meanwhile meta knight is only character i have definitive voice for and that voice is his japanese voice actor for the anime. that was perfect casting. he doesn't sound too low (like in english voice lines in smash) or edgy or whatever. he sounds cool, collected and calm.

bandana dee is actually very simple tbh... he has a "canonical" voice. there was a promotional video done for kirby battle royale with bandee and susie as commentators, both of which were voiced by makiko ohmoto. i loved bandee's voice there, so i feel like ohmoto just should keep voicing him in the future.
