good day to think about sebastian skinner. guy gets called for a plumbing job out in the middle of the forest where no people live. pays double, nice. theres a factory full of mannequins there. he checks out a drain thats clogged with “dark red water” (definitely not blood and hair and fat and bits of people) while a clown tells him how much she wants to pull the skin off his body, and as hes listening to this he’s just like, huh, not my business. and he just gives her the invoice and drives away. they call him back the next day to fix another drain and hes like yeah sure i’ll come right over. he gets there and the clown leads him into the mannequin factory where they’re all cutting up human heads (which are still alive and in pain, btw) and they all turn to attack him. he runs away, aided by jude fucking perry of all people, who burns the shit out of his shoulder but lets him drive away before she burns down the entire forest and all the mannequins. and this guys just like, well, thats saturdays for you innit? legend icon behavior.

a thousand miles // mick schumacher
summary: searching for life after f1, the race of champions may just have the answer mick needs, in the form of a shy former w series driver who is just as lost as he is
pairing: mick schumacher x female driver!reader
warnings: mentions of guenther steiner/haas, karaoke, matchmaker val returns! corinna the icon is also trying to get her son to go on a date, one small joke about crashing a rally car.
author's note: @magnummagnussen told me this was a terrible idea. i beg to differ : )
the swedish sunlight bounced off the snowdrifts outside of the ski lodge, illuminating the inside of the dining hall where the drivers milled about and socialized, bright smiles on their faces.
mick saw her first.
he was locked in conversation with seb, his eyes catching her just out of the corner of his line of sight, hair braided messily over one shoulder, wearing skinny jeans and a hoodie for a band he's never heard of, a pom pom hat with the race of champions logo on it as she nervously clutched a breakfast tray and tried to figure out where to sit.
normally, she would have sat with jamie chadwick, but the brit had decided to go for an early run, and had left the other former w series driver alone.
it was valtteri who noticed the young german driver's wandering eyes first. with a smile and a sip of his espresso, he waved the young woman over, enjoying the look of panic on mick's face.
"valtteri!" mick hissed. "why would you do that!?"
"because you've been miserable since abu dhabi and you need to let loose a little bit."
mick couldn't exactly protest. since learning that he had been dropped from the haas formula one team just hours before the qualifying session for the last race of the season was due to start, there had been a hole in his heart, something that he couldn't patch up.
but he knew that a short lived roc fling was the last thing that would help him out.
"hi." she said sofltly her voice like music to mick's ears. "can i sit with you guys? jamie kind of left me high and dry this morning."
sebastian smiled, ever the gentleman as he motioned towards the free seat next to him.
the free seat that also happened to be next to a certain young schumacher.
"i'm y/n y/l/n, i used to drive in the w series for quantfury. i'm felipe's teammate for all star team this weekend." she introduced herself as she picked at the paper wrapper on her double chocolate muffin, an untouched mug of hot chocolate and whipped cream on the other end of the tray.
"mick schumacher, fellow racing reject." mick joked nervously, reaching out to shake the young woman's hand. "formerly of the haas formula one team and the ferrari driver's academy. now proudly driving reserve for mercedes."
"i'm technically a part of the alpine young driver's programme, but it's not like they've done any work at getting me closer to driving an f1 car. not that i blame them, all of otmar and laurent's efforts were on the piastri thing this season."
"technicalities only matter in this sport when the fia get what they want." seb hummed. "i'm-"
"sebastian vettel, racing legend!" y/n gushed. "i'm like, a huge fan. i grew up watching you on the telly, i had a poster of you at red bull hanging up in my room. this is so fucking surreal, dude. heck, i walked past mika hakkinen earlier and thought i was going to cry."
the rest of the table laughed. "mick was like that when he was here last year." seb said fondly. "i think everybody is like that when they come here for the first time."
"mika fucking hakkinen, man."
seb and val shared a look before looking back over at mick.
they knew.
the boy was smitten already.
--------
the press conference took place at exactly noon, and as was typical of the roc, most of the scheduled drivers were late.
it's not that y/n was late on purpose. but she was horrifically lost inside the chalet and had been turned around four or five different time trying to find her way to the conference room, overheating in her race suit in the warm chalet.
the directions were loaded on her phone, but she still felt like it was a lost cause as she rolled up the sleeves of deep blue nomex material, leaning her head against the wall to take a few deep breaths.
everything was fine. everything was okay. she was safe.
she heard voices coming from her left, and her heart skipped a beat.
the press conference. she had found it.
she rushed inside, trying to duck out of view of the cameras as she scurried to the table at the front of the room. catching her eye from the distance, mick waved at her, a small smile on her face that was enough to put a matching smile on her own as she took a seat in between the german and her teammate, felipe drugovich.
"where have you been?" felipe asked quietly.
she shook her head, unwilling to admit that she had gotten lost. "don't worry about it."
"so nice of you to join us, miss y/l/n." one of the reporters said, the young driver snapping to attention and reaching for the desktop microphone, fumbling with it and trying not to knock it over. "with the w series seemingly ended permanently, what's next for you after this weekend?"
"i'm still trying to make my 2023 plans." she said softly, the microphone barely catching her soft voice. she had always hated media commitments. "obviously an f3 place is out of the question right now, and it's pretty obvious that i'm too old for all that now, so i've been looking into these one-off racing opportunities and tests so that i can find out what i want to do in 2024."
she felt her throat get tighter, the sweat forming on the back of her neck as she nervously reached one black polished fingernail to brush an errant strand of hair from her bun to the space behind her ear.
"hey." mick said softly, nudging her in the side. "you're doing great."
she took a deep breath before flashing mick a smile as she continued talking.
"i've got a few races lined up with the nascar xfinity series down in the united states, and i'm really looking forward to it. racing in america has a completely different vibe to it, you know?"
--------
the next time mick saw y/n, he was with his mother, testing out the rally car during the free practice session.
she was impossible to miss, her screams of delight carrying over the wind and followed up by laughter as the car caught air going over a hill.
it was enough to make the boy freeze behind the wheel, corinna giving him a knowing look.
"what's her name, mickie?" corinna said with a smile, pulling out her phone, no doubt to see who her son was so infatuated with.
"y/n y/l/n." mick said softly. "but i dont know her that well, mom."
"oh, she's pretty!" corinna beamed, pulling up the driver's instagram profile. "look, she's a perfect fit for you, she's quiet and she's shy and she doesn't go to parties!"
"mom, i swear to god i will crash this car and make you walk back to the chalet yourself!"
mick rolled his eyes, turning his head back to the windshield as he took a sharp corner around the track. it's not that he hadn't thought about y/n since the presser. he thought she was sweet, and he would deny it if asked, but he looked forward to seeing her and knew that when life went back to normal after roc, that he would miss her.
"you don't have anything to lose, mick. what's the harm in even just going for a coffee with her or something? i'm not telling you to marry the girl, but at least give romance a chance."
the german would think about his mother's words all day: through his time in the sauna, to the ice bath and then again at dinner. the thoughts would eventually keep him awake at night, unable to fall asleep while wrapped in the hotels luxury down bedding.
he found himself wandering the chalet at odd hours of the night, lost in his own thoughts as he meandered towards the coffee machine in the lobby. if he was going to stay awake, he might as well stay warm as well.
the chalet doors slid open, and mick's breath caught in his throat as he watched her stride into the lobby, wearing a different beanie hat but the same one ok rock hoodie she had been wearing when he eyed her for the first time, a puffy tan jacket pulled over the entire ensemble and a plastic bag for a swedish supermarket hanging from her arm.
"mick!" she shouted, face bright as she crossed the lobby. "couldn't sleep?"
the boy shrugged, trying to play it cool even though his palms were sweaty and his heart was racing and was she always this pretty? was that mole on her upper lip always there?
"come on, let me introduce you to my favorite pre-race ritual." she beamed, pulling a bag of edible pilsbury cookie dough from the bag, along with two metal spoons clearly stolen from the breakfast buffet.
mick couldn't help but laugh. "how has your performance coach not killed you yet?"
"what she doesn't know won't kill her. who is she to rob me of life's greatest pleasures?"
pinching himself to make sure that he wasn't dreaming, mick followed the driver back to her hotel room. her energy was magnetic, and mick couldn't help but be drawn in.
they settled on the plush bed, shrouded in blankets as she overturned the shopping bag, allowing it's contents to fall to the blanket.
"so, this is what i watch when it's been a long day, or if i don't have the mental energy to focus on anything else." she said with a cheeky smile as she popped open her laptop. "when i was in the w series, it was juju noda who got me hooked on the really cheesy j-dramas. i already watched the darker asian dramas, like the psychological thrillers and everything, but it was juju who got me hooked on the romance ones when we watched coffee and vanilla."
she clicked onto disney plus, waiting for it to lead as she opened the canister of cookie dough in her hand. after the screen loaded, she navigated her cursor over to an orange thumbnail.
"this is yakuza lover: romance and bullets. and yes, it's as mind-numbing as it sounds."
they watched a few episodes, exchanging bites of cookie dough and popping open bottles of flavored sparkling water as the characters on the screen kept digging themselves into holes they couldn't get out of.
"do they not take one look at the dialogue and go 'what the fuck is going on here'?" mick asked quizzically, staring at the fictional yakuza boss on the screen. "like, seriously? and she finds that even remotely attractive?"
"it reads like a bad wattpad novel, and that's enough for me when i don't want to think about anything." y/n laughed, shoveling another spoonful of cookie dough into her mouth. "either that or i watch a concert film or something. i live for live music. hate parties, but i'll go to a good concert any day. that's why i liked racing, you know? not for the fame or the money, but for the travel, the means to an end."
her eyes went wide, and mick was captivated, hanging on to her every word.
"have you heard of one ok rock? probably not, since you didn't mention it when you saw my sweater earlier, but they have this one really good concert film from when they played yokohama stadium, it's called mighty long fall. i saw them live in 2018 on the 'ambitions' tour, so that's a good film as well if you can find it, but mighty long fall is one of my favourite live concerts like ever."
mick was struggling to follow everything, as she seemed to have talked without even breathing, her fingers flying across they keyboard as she searched for 'mighty long fall' on youtube.
he was well and truly smitten with her as she loaded the concert, seemingly skipping to a particularly important part.
"this has to be one of my favoruite songs they've ever done, and it's not even theirs."
mick would have recognized the piano arrangement anywhere. anybody born before two thousand and five would have. the japanese band on the screen was playing an acoustic rendition of 'a thousand miles' by vanessa carlton.
"making my way downtown, walking fast, faces past and i'm homebound."
she was singing off key, but that seemed to be the point as she threw her head back and forth, her hair flying everywhere as she beamed, singing into the metal spoon as if it was a karaoke microphone.
"come on, schumacher. i know you know the words!" she laughed, mick laughing along with her as his face turned pink. "sing it with me!"
and when she looked at him like that, what else was he supposed to do?
---------
and just as quickly as it began, the race of champions weekend was officially over.
gathered in the warm den of the chalet, the drivers milled about and chatted among themselves, jazz music playing in the background as a warm fire crackled in the hearth.
y/n and felipe had placed second in the nations cup as the all-star team, and she seemed to glow from the happiness of the somewhat victory as she stood off to the side with both her teammate and jamie chadwick.
mick couldn't help himself, staring at her with a lovestruck gaze from the other side of the room, where he stood with sebastian and valtteri. mick and y/n had grown infinitely closer over the course of the weekend, but mick hadn't had the courage to ask for her phone number, or to properly take her out on a date.
and soon, he'd lose those chances for good.
"the way i see it, you don't have anything to lose." seb suggested, clapping the younger man on the shoulder. "the worst that could happen is that you made a new friend, who doesn't want to be more than that."
"why not just accept things as they are?" mick whined. "the weekend is almost over anyways!"
"it's never too late for a romantic gesture." valtteri suggested, nodding his head towards where a karaoke machine had been set up by team norway earlier in the night.
and that's when mick knew what he needed to do. with seb and val's help, he managed to get everything rigged, set up and ready to go.
when the music started playing, she knew that it was meant for her, all conversation stopping at that piano arrangement as she stopped to look at the german, hands nervously gripping the microphone as he began to sing.
"making my way downtown, walking fast, faces past and i'm homebound."
jamie broke out into a grin, turning to look the the other female driver. "there's no other person this could possibly be meant for. how did he know you're emotionally attached to this song?"
despite herself, y/n found that she was also starting to sing quietly under her breath.
"staring blankly ahead, just making my way, making a way through the crowd."
felipe nudged her in the side. "go on. you're not going to get another chance."
trying to stop the uncontrollable blush on her face, she kept her eyes cast down as she made her way to where mick was standing. sebastian gave the duo a knowing look as mick wordlessly passed y/n the microphone, shy smiles on both of their faces.
"if i could fall into the sky, do you think time would pass me by? 'cause you know i'd walk a thousand miles if i could just see you tonight."
neither of them realized how close to each other they had gotten, barely a foot of space between their bodies, faces blushing bright pink as the lyrics faded out to the instrumental.
"mick-" she said softly.
"you don't have to say anything. not right now, not right here. just kiss me."
and that's exactly what she did, the room erupting into cheers as mick's soft lips met hers. she dropped the microphone, feedback echoing around the room as mick held her, both parties smiling into the kiss before mika hakkinen came running over the grab the fallen mic.
"will you go on a date with me?" mick asked, lips swollen and shyness in his tone. "like, a real one this time?"
"yes, mick." she giggled. "of course i will."

Very controversial opinion because I know how some people feel about the Russo brothers:
Their films outside their big four marvel films : TWS, civil war, infinity war, and endgame - some are questionable. I watched cherry and I was like….are these even the same guys who did those other movies???
But. One thing I really believe, and you mentioned here before:
The Russo brothers can pull an amazing performance out of Chris E. He is their muse and they are his. it’s clear to ME that he is very probably their favorite. Even during TGM you could 1000% tell the Russos lived for Lloyd. They knew it was a six franchise so Lloyd was one and done but if they could they would have had Chris as six. And we know this.
They were able to pull something out of him rarely other directors besides bong joon ho, rian Johnson, and Danny Boyle were able to. I’m actually going to add David Yates to this because I’m still convinced Pete Brenner in PH was one of his most poignant performances of recent memory. He was underused but David got something out of him. I disagree with critics.
Anyways - back to Russos. They got Steve and Lloyd out of him. I know people poo poo the action comic book stuff because it’s not awards worthy or Martin Scorsese and Leo but seriously?
Are yall CE fans or Leo fans?
I really think people ought to start looking at the actor they Stan/fan and stop wanting to put him in a book with another actor.
Nobody knows if and or what he will do next. But I do think it’s a good sign that the Russos were able to repeatedly direct Chris into a version of himself that’s not only memorable, but iconic.
That’s why I’m totally ok if for some reason in the future, he does end up working with the Russos again.
Super super bold statement: you can call me delusional all you want but if there were a pair of directors that could actually pull an Oscar worthy performance out of CE, it would be Joe and Anthony Russo. I’m serious.
TBC, Im not saying the Russos are ever going to make any awards worthy content nor that they’ll work with Chris again or that Chris wants to do that or anything. I’m just saying, their connection is unique and mutually beneficial/special.
We do not know if Chris’ dinner with the Russos will result in a project. We don’t know what was discussed, or why they met. They are friends. But let’s assume it was work related. The next project they’re casting for isn’t even action. Let’s not forget the work the Russos did on Community. They can do some great work. I just feel in recent years they became all flash and no substance. So that Amazon project isn’t pure action. it is about cryptocurrency.
I was talking to someone this morning on discord about the whole damn comparison thing, it’s tired and old. Sebastian and Chris get compared all the time because Steve and Bucky. Sebastian clearly wants to be a critical darling. He takes risks and makes award baiting movies. That is what HE wants with HIS career. Chris wants to make more popcorn flicks. Do not come at me. There is nothing wrong with that. It is HIS career, and that is what HE wants. It’s like comparing Brad Pitt to Tom Cruise. Does Tom still have a great career? Does he make popcorn flicks? Has he pretty much stuck to popcorn flicks with some random critically praised movies? Yes. Now look at Brad’s career, early on Brad was making award baiting movies. Legends of the Fall, Seven Years In Tibet, A River Runs Through it. And he has continued to do that. But does that make either actor better or worse than the other? No, it doesn’t. Do they still have careers to this day? Yes, they do. So can we squash comparing actors to actors? Instead compare Chris work to his other work?
I get a bit annoyed that Chris continues to work with the same people all the time, but doesn’t Leo work with Scorsese all the time? I just hope whatever his next project is something he is passionate about. I hope he enjoys the time he has on set, and the people he’s working with. And I’ve got my fingers crossed for something, and I hope that the rumbles and mumbling as I’m hearing about February are true. So let’s see.

on sports, family, sebastian vettel and familiarity.
for my entire life, i can always remember loving sports. racing? kind of. but it was more of idolizing my hometown teams: the st. louis cardinals and st. louis blues. my sports icons and heroes were the likes of stan "the man" musial, albert pujols, al macinnis, chris pronger, keith tkachuk. all athletes that i grew up watching and learning the games through them.
racing...see that was always more of a foreign concept to me, literally and figuratively. my father watches all kinds of motor sports all the time, his favorite series being f1 and indycar. the speed channel (r.i.p.) was always on so i'd always hear something of racing in the background.
he tried his best with me. indycar (or indy racing series as it was known) was most accessible. he took me to an indy race at the track not too far from our house when i was a kid. we always hosted a party for the indy 500 when i was a kid. all the adults would drink a beer on the first lap and the kids would get milk. and, of course, he would always tell me stories of the great michael schumacher, his favorite driver of all time, and i'd love to hear them.
but why would i need that guy when i have other athletes in my town? schumacher was an icon, legend, and great. but, he'd won all of his titles before i was 10. (yes i was 9 when he won his 7th but it still counts.) most of these other athletes i looked up to were mainly still in their prime and, once again, playing for my hometown. i'm not german nor italian so schumacher and ferrari seemed a little far fetched.
so, sure. racing was there but it wasn't at the forefront. i knew to root for michael schumacher and how cool he was. and trust me, i also thought it was cool when a real michael schumacher ferrari showed up at the end of Cars (2006). all in all, i knew the glory of ferrari and the schumacher name but i didn't really understand it.
then, one day, my dad starts raving about some kid named sebastian vettel. he's german. he's fast. he's got a little bite to him and he's going to be a star one day. maybe as good as schumacher, which was hard for my dad to believe.
now, once again, i'm still not into racing at this point but i like the name. sebastian vettel. don't know why i liked it so much but it just rolled. the years go by, michael retires for the first time, sebastian vettel wins his first race, and i still don't really care about racing. but i care about sebastian. i know to care about sebastian.
this wasn't against my will, just a reminder. my dad was genuinely trying to make a connection with me, which i appreciate. he really didn't know another way. he'd already taught me about hockey but i cared more about the sport than he did so we couldn't connect. he was still all in about racing and i wasn't. but i liked sebastian so i rooted for him.
years past again, sebastian vettel wins four titles in a row ("can you believe it? i knew the kid would be a great!") and then sebastian vettel signs for ferrari. my dad is thrilled. the world is thrilled. it sounds like a dream come true. even though i'm still not fully into any sort of racing, i'm even thrilled at the news. sounds like a match made in racing heaven.
throughout the years it remained the same. a race is on, i say go seb, life goes on. that is until canada 2019. that's right. this race changed things for me. f1 has, obviously, had it's fair share of scandals and other front page news. however, i was never in the room or truly present for it. this time was different.
the race starts out like usual. the race is on, i say go seb, life goes on. then, something happens. sebastian vettel's name is mentioned a lot. lewis hamilton's name is mentioned a lot. i tried, desperately, to make sense of what was going on but i had nothing. i knew nothing. all i knew was that something was up with sebastian vettel and potentially lewis hamilton. i watch as the action unfolds. sebastian switches the signs and my dad lets out a chuckle. he's not even believing it. but, he's smiling. and you know what? so i was i. before i even knew what was happening, before i knew how my dad reacted, i watched all of it going down and i was smirking.
i didn't know why i was so amused but that was it. that was the moment it took for me to actually start paying attention. it seemed that in that moment everything my dad had been telling me about this funky german guy had finally caught up. i understood why each week i kept cheering for seb. i understood why over the years we had been cheering for seb. it catapulted me into a new world that i had only been vaguely paying attention to for years and years.
i watched, thrilled for the first time about racing. but i tried to keep it to myself. i had done that for years, trying to downplay how excited i was for things like this since it usually got old quick for family and friends.
the season ended and i wasn't sure what to do. i had hockey so away i went back to my hometown team who had just won the prized stanley cup the past year. but i still wanted to know and learn about f1. i wanted to learn more about what the next season would bring. i wanted to learn.
fast foward to 2020. maybe in january or so, i'd seen a preview on netflix for a show called "drive to survive." i knew it was about f1 and since i wanted to go on this journey as well as have some way to say "hey! look! i like this sport too!" without going over the top, i introduced it to my family in march. we went through both seasons like no tomorrow. and you know what? my plan worked. i got to talk about f1 to my dad and i got to learn more about the sport.
but at the end of the day? at the end of two drama filled tv seasons? i still liked seb, as i'd now come to call him. i liked him more than any other driver on the grid for some reason i couldn't even explain at the moment. i was gutted when i was finally going to get to watch a full season of seb racing and get to pay attention to it and then it turned out no, i was not. obviously, we got back to racing and the rest is history.
now is that moment, though. now i can explain why i still liked him more than the others: he's familiar.
he's familiar to me. i think he's familiar to a lot of us. he's been on the grid for so long. abu dhabi 2022 will be his 300th race. the guy has won 4 world championships. he keeps popping up. think about it: when he had covid this season and missed races, so so many people were feeling off because seb wasn't there. now, maybe that's just my little corner i've backed myself into and it probably is because in this corner we're very seb-minded. however, there was at least a small ripple was genuinely felt throughout the f1 community. he is familiar.
this is not to say that other drivers aren't familiar. hell, lewis is one of, if not the most known and definitely the most experienced drivers on the grid. but, this is a personal essay so unfortunately while i know lewis, he isn't as familiar to me as seb is.
seb has been there in the background of a large majority of my life. i will learn what to do in the future when he isn't on the grid ever week and back to being in the background. however, today, it's a loss of familiarity. because, even if he has been in the background, he's still been there. he's still on the grid. it's not to say i won't have a driver to root for on the grid after seb leaves. but i won't have sebastian vettel. i won't have that familiarity.
it's hard to describe how much seb's familiarity means to me. that's why i'm typing all of this out. because, yes. it is different than just having that name repeated for years and years. i knew lewis. i knew daniel. both names rung a bell to me when i immersed myself in the f1 world. but neither one was familiar. they were recognizable, sure. but they didn't bring a feeling of "oh. yeah. it's seb." largely, i have my father to thank for that. he kept that familiarity going throughout the years.
we all have our own drivers that are familiar to ourselves. whether they've been on in the background for years or whether you just started to know them last month, they're familiar to you. and, when that familiarity is gone, you can't help but feel like something is missing. that's why it's familiar in the first place. sure, maybe i'm being overdramatic but, like i said, it's familiar. if i'm not mistaken (and i could be so please call me out) the origins of the word come from household, intimacy, family. so, yeah, it makes sense to grieve.
yes, i said grieve. like i said, it's a loss of someone familiar. so, if you're feeling like i am (down, sad, depressed, weird) that's normal. grief should be happening with a loss. it will probably continue to happen as people bring it up. grief is difficult to navigate so i hope you have someone or several someones to help you through this.
grief, though, also means we have to celebrate. the reason we grieve is because we love. we have to celebrate what he did in the sport and continues to do. seb is right. his marks will be left on track for a long, long time to come. lewis is right. seb left the sport better than he found it. that's something huge to celebrate.
i, personally, have to celebrate the fact that i have something to talk to my dad about. it's certainly helped patch some aspects of my relationship with him and i will never forget that. i will also never forget the people i've met because of seb. whether it be fans at races or online, i have to celebrate that bond.
overall, we have to celebrate who he is. he's a good guy whose passion for other's passions has certainly spread to all aspects of this sport. this sport that sometimes can be so dark, dirty even. but, then, you have someone like sebastian vettel, who has been described as sunshine himself, helping light the way for now and years to come. helping clean up when no one is watching. help be that familiar presence, giving you something to root for and a passion to care for. we have to celebrate the fact that he has done what he can and what he wants to do in the sport. and, we still have a few more months with him on the f1 grid so that is certainly something to celebrate.
if anything, we have to celebrate that he is leaving. because this is not the end of seb. far from it, i choose to think. he's reminded us himself: there is still a race to win.
#this is so long i'm so sorry but i needed to just kinda. type.#needed to just get it all out there#and i'm not sure if anyone will read it#if you do thanks for just clicking read more. if you don't thats okay too i'm not mad.#more of just a self reflection but really seriously genuinely it is long so call me crazy now#sebastian vettel#danke seb#my writing

The Laver Cup Makeover
The Laver Cup, a chance to see the best of Europe face the best that the rest of the world has to offer. Watch the best play the best. Exciting right? Who wouldn’t want to see Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal team up to take on the rest of the world? Who wouldn’t be interested in seeing the best players all at one event?
Er me?
Don’t get me wrong the first year in 2017 was very exciting! With Team Europe consisting of legends of the sport Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Exciting youngsters Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem and seasoned pros in Marin Cilic and Tomas Berdych. To top all of that off they were captained by Swedish icon Bjorn Borg. And what about Team World? Well captained by the ever-lively John McEnroe they had a whole heap of American talent in John Isner, Sam Querrey, Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe. The Quartet were joined by the entertainer – Nick Kyrgios and up and coming Denis Shapovalov.
5 of the Worlds Top 10 in one place? Sign me up that sounds exhilarating! For the most part the matches were, most of them went to ranking but they were filled with high class points, and it was a fantastic showcase for the doubles where you got a ‘Fedal’ Team Up, thrilling stuff.
Team Europe won the event in 2017 (As you’d expect) 15 points to 9. While at the time it was very exciting, part of that was due to the newness of it all. You’ve got the best players in the world playing in one city in this ‘exclusive’ team event. However, did I mention that 5 of the Top 10 were all on one team? And given that I mentioned that Team Europe won the event can you take a wild stab at which team those 5 were on? Yeah…
What about 2018? Well Europe’s average world ranking was 7 and World’s was 19. Do you want to guess the winner? (Spoiler alert: Europe won 13-8). 2019 reads similarly, Europe average of 5 and World average of 57 (Jack Sock brings the average down by quite a bit, at the time he was ranked 210). Amazingly the 2019 edition was the closest yet with a notable upset being Jack Sock against Fabio Fognini. Furthermore 2 out of 3 of the doubles matches went to Team World. “Great it’s working then…why do we need a makeover?”
Well, you see we arrive in 2021 and as usual we have our teams and as per tradition Team Europe is packed with players in the Top 10. No Rafa or Roger or Novak but still 5 of the top 10 have snuck in. “Is this balanced out by some exciting lower ranked youngster being the sixth player?” Ah well, the sixth is an exciting youngster! Hooray! The Youngster just happens to be Casper Ruud who is currently ranked 11th in the world. “Oh.” Yeah…That gives us an average ranking of 6!
“Yeah, but you said only 5 of the top 10 are in Team Europe, what about Team World?”
They do have a top 10 player! They’ve got Denis Shapovalov who is ranked at 10! Yay! He’s also the only guy outside of ‘Europe’ ranked in the top 10.
“Wait why did you put ‘Europe’?”
Okay a question for you, dear reader, this time. Russia – Europe or Not? If you pop that question into Google, you end up with ‘Russia is a transcontinental country. 77% of Russia’s area is in Asia, the western 23% of the country is in Europe.’ (Source: nationsonline.org). I’m going to be honest; I have no idea what my answer to that question would be other than part of it is in Europe and part of it is not. The Laver Cup obviously considers the Russians as part of Europe as that is who Medvedev and Rublev are down to play for.
“That’s fine, isn’t it?”
Yep! Except this is where our make over begins! Move the Russians into Team World and you end up with 3 of the Top 10 in Team World and 3 of the Top 10 in Team Europe. Oh boy look at the balance! Now you’ll get exciting matches such as Daniil Medvedev against Stefanos Tsitsipas. World Number 2 against World Number 3. Not Medvedev against Isner for the fifteenth time…
Moving on! Hmm I think 3 top 10 players is okay for now, but we might come back to that…For now we’ll limit the teams to only being allowed three top 10 players. Now our teams look like this:
Stefanos Tsitsipas (3), Alexander Zverev (5), Matteo Berrettini (8) and Casper Ruud (11) for Team Europe. Two places to fill.
Daniil Medvedev (2), Andrey Rublev (7), Denis Shapovalov (10), Diego Schwartzman (14), Felix Auger-Aliassime (17) for Team World with one place to fill.
The ATP tour is all about the ‘Next Gen’ we’ve even got the Next Gen Finals that take place In Milan. How about we get some of those exciting Next Gen players in the Laver Cup? Start preparing our next superstars?
“Sounds good? Who?”
Well leading the race for Milan is Jannik Sinner, 20 years old, three titles to his name already (all won when he was 19), ranked 15 in the world, Incredible young talent. Oh, and he’s Italian so we’ll put him in Team Europe. After him is Auger-Aliassime who is already on Team World, so we move on to Sebastian Korda. American, 21 years old, 1 career title, ranking of 45. Let’s pop him in as the final member of Team World.
We have one place left in Team Europe. Would you like a Spanish guy or an Italian guy?
“Er got any more information?”
Sure! First up for your (well my…sorry you can have your say in the comments) consideration is Lorenzo Musetti of Italy. 19 years old, current ranking of 61 with a career high of 58, Reached the fourth round at the French Open this year, beat Diego Schwartzman in Acapulco earlier this year…Does that name ring a bell? Yeah, he’s on Team World!
“And the Spanish guy?”
Carlos Alcaraz, 18 years old and already has a title to his name with a career high ranking of 54, a third-round appearance at the French Open, no wins over the Top 10 yet but we’ll put that down to him being 18, shall we? Very exciting young player.
“I don’t have a say really?”
Nope so we’re going with Alcaraz because Team Europe is lacking in the Spanish department.
“We have our teams then great!”
Team Europe – Tsitsipas, Zverev, Berrettini, Ruud, Sinner and Alcaraz. Average ranking of 16.
Team World – Medvedev, Rublev, Shapovalov, Schwartzman, Auger-Aliassime and Korda. Average ranking of 15.
Oh, we are balanced! Look at that! Team World looking pretty good there, some tight matches, interesting doubles pairs. I’m fairly content with that but-
“Uh oh there’s a ‘but’”
Is Team World looking a bit…? North American? 3/6? I’m just saying that the other side of the globe is there…de Minaur? Nishikori? Kwon? Kyrgios? Ah we’ll leave it as it is for now. But there’s something up with Team Europe…A certain German…Let’s quietly remove him and bring in Pablo Carreno Busta. That does mess with the average ranking a little bit taking it down to 17. We could switch out Auger-Aliassime for Alex de Minaur bringing World’s average down to 16 but I don’t think a difference of two in average ranking is too much to be concerned about.
There we have our teams then. We don’t necessarily have star power like the Big 3 but we have 5 of the Top 10, an Olympic gold medallist, an Olympic bronze medallist and several entertaining youngsters. I suppose we could bring in the star power in some capacity…Bjorn Borg and Roger Federer as Co Captains? Agassi and McEnroe against them? I don’t know but we need some draw for the crowds that they’re going to get to see at least one of the Big 3.
I haven’t completely overhauled the teams, most players that are going to play in the actual Laver Cup have been included in my team lists but that is partly because Team World are yet to announce the rest of their team. I have a horrible feeling that it’ll be fleshed out with three Americans and Africa and Asia will once again be ignored. I’m not saying I fixed that by moving the Russians into Team World, but it would be nice if they could include Kei Nishikori or Yoshihito Nishioka from Japan or Lloyd Harris from South Africa. Personally, I’d also like it to be a mixed event with the best of the women’s tour coming to play but I think I might be asking for a bit much there.
I’ll leave you with my teams then:
Europe – Co Captained by Roger Federer and Bjorn Borg.
World – Co Captained by Andre Agassi and John McEnroe.
Stefanos Tsitispas (3)
Matteo Berrettini (8)
Casper Ruud (11)
Pablo Carreno Busta (12)
Jannik Sinner (15)
Carlos Alcaraz (54)
Bye!
Daniil Medvedev (2)
Andrey Rublev (7)
Denis Shapovalov (10)
Diego Schwartzman (14)
Felix Auger-Aliassime (17)
Sebastian Korda (45)

Synopsis : [ PDF ] Ebook The Decade That Rocked: The Music and Mayhem of '80s Rock and Metal [EBOOK EPUB KIDLE]
“I have read pretty much every rock 'n' roll biography there is worth reading, and you never know what to expect when you pick up a new book. Well, let me tell you Mark Weiss has raised the bar for rock 'n' roll books with The Decade That Rocked. Mark has always been at the top of his field, and the level of detail and quality put into this book is the ultimate testament to his rock n' roll photographic legacy.†–  Sebastian Bach“Mark is the real deal. He may not play the guitar, but that camera is his guitar. He’s a rockstar.†– Gene Simmons'Mark’s energy, his creativity, his drive, his positive attitude and his enthusiasm that make him one of the legends of rock photography. It’s why his work—both old and new—is still so in demand today. Mark Weiss inspires greatness in all he turns his camera lens on. But don’t take my word for it. Just look at the pictures in this book.' – Dee Snider“His pictures say as much as the musicâ€Â – Rob Halford “He was one of the guys. He wasn’t one of the 18 photographers you’d work with that day.â€Â – Alice Cooper “He had that instinct, to recognize our energy and use his technical talent to capture it.â€Â – Joe Perry Mark “Weissguy†Weiss set an unmatched standard for rock photography. Starting out as a teenager by sneaking into concerts with a neighbor’s 35mm camera, he embarked on a legendary career that took him around the globe and onto some of the most memorable album and magazine covers in rock history– featuring the likes of Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne, Aerosmith, and Mötley Crüe to Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Bon Jovi, and KISS, and so many more. With 700+ photos, brand new interviews, and stories from Mark himself, Decade that Rocked is a monument to the photography, friendships, and legacy of an artist that helped define one of rock’s most iconic eras. This career-spanning collection features:  A unique lens on the golden age of rock: Never-before or rarely seen photos of legends like Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne, Aerosmith, and Mötley Crüe to Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Bon Jovi, and KISS, as well as countless others whose sound and image defined the era. Exclusive interviews: Ozzy Osbourne, Dee Snider, Nikki Sixx, Joe Perry, Rob Halford, and many more recall their memories of this era-defining decade. Untold Stories: Relive Mark’s unbelievable journey through rock history, from getting arrested for selling photos outside of Kiss concert to touring with legends like Van Halen, to photographing Bon Jovi’s infamous “Slippery When Wet†shoot, shooting backstage at Live Aid with Black Sabbath, and so many more. Definitive Lens: Creem magazine readers ranked Mark Weiss as rock’s top photographer of the 80s. His work has appeared on some of the most iconic album and magazine covers of all time.  Captured from the unique vantage point of a photographer who lived and breathed the ’80s in all its grit and glory, The Decade That Rocked brings to life the no-holds-barred sounds and sights that changed the world of hard rock and metal forever.   Â

Weekly Recap | August 12th-18th
Sorry it’s a bit late! Here’s what I read in the last week :)
~
Complete
Water Landing by romanticalgirl (Modern AU | 8K | Teen): From the prompt: My dog is the size of a mini horse and forcibly knocked you into the duck pond for that hot dog you were about to take a bite out of.
here is no mistake by amethystkrystal (Post-Endgame, canon-divergent | <1K | General): Bucky Barnes is worthy.
we were running riot by steveandbucky (canon-divergent, TFA | 2,4K | Explicit): The train is still running at full speed. Steve swears under his breath. He almost just lost Bucky.
Have You Seen This Person? by fallendarlings (Post-WS | 2,5K | Teen): Missing persons fliers start showing up in Steve's apartment. They have his face on them and they're written in Bucky's handwriting.
💙 Collar Full of Chemistry by 2bestfriends (Modern AU, BDSM | 188K | Explicit): Steve is very rich and desperate to feel in control of his life again after a recent divorce has left him feeling bitter and lonely. When he keeps crossing paths with a disaster twenty-something, an unconventional solution presents itself. Bucky is very broke and can’t seem to catch a break, especially after some asshole fires him for one fucking mistake. So of course, it follows that he should sign a contract agreeing to do everything and anything that same asshole wants for a whole year in exchange for a payout that could finally change his life for the better.
💙 the way you slam your body into mine reminds me i’m alive (but monsters are always hungry, darling) by voxofthevoid (Shrunkyclunks, Avenger Bucky | 3K | Explicit): Steve doesn’t wait for an invitation, bodily pushing Bucky out of the way and kicking the door shut behind him. Bucky wouldn’t put up with that shit, not normally, but Steve lays his hands on him, hot and huge over bare skin, and then there’s teeth closing in on his throat, and Bucky can’t think. (Part 4 of couldn't get the boy to kill me)
tell yourself this is how it's going to be by belovedmuerto (post-CW | 25K | Mature): Steve is absolutely one hundred percent not going to cry himself to sleep.
Good Friends by eadunne2 (Evanstan RPF | 3,8K | Explicit): “I was just wondering what you think about the fact that everyone thinks you’re dating?” “I mean we’re good friends so, thanks but no thanks.”
Happy Birthday, Sebastian Stan by dixons_mama (Evanstan RPF | 2,5K | Explicit): Chris surprises Sebastian on his birthday, and things take a turn that neither expected. Maybe birthday wishes do come true.
Something Simple by Catchclaw (Evanstan AU | 2,9K | Explicit): Chris woke up with a hangover and a half-hearted hard-on and a softly snoring dude in his bed.
My Arms Are Open by dixons_mama (TFA | 2,9K | Explicit): When Steve sees that Bucky is struggling after escaping Azzano, he decides to do all he can to help the love of his life recover.
Starbucks by lockedlocke (Modern AU, skinny Steve | 4,3K | Explicit): Bucky presses the middle button on his phone again, and then once more to unlock it. He instantly taps the white text bubble in the green icon, goes to the chat he’s got with Steve and starts to type. He presses send before he even realizes what he wrote. “I will suck your dick if you bring me Starbucks.”
Parade Rest by caleprwrite (Shrinkyclinks | 12K | Explicit): Bucky can be a cranky asshole, but Pepper knows best just what he needs. Bucky will get it whether he likes it or not. And he'll say thank you. Enter Steven Grant Rogers, Massage Therapist and friend to Pepper Potts.
In Repair by sablier_bloque (post-Endgame | 3,8K | Mature): In 2023, Steve Rogers lays down his shield, joins Twitter, and finds purpose beyond the battlefield—with Bucky Barnes at his side.
WIP
💙 Like Real People Do by 2bestfriends (Shrunkyclunks, canon divergent post-Avengers | 59K | 9/10 | Explicit): Seven years into an isolated retirement after the Battle of New York, Steve has carved out a place for himself in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains. He has a best friend (his dog, Lady), a frenemy (a local black bear named Rufus), and a cabin in the middle of the woods, an hour’s drive from the nearest town. As November comes to a close, he heads into town to pick up supplies and ends up with a stowaway.
we miss being ruffians by napricot (Post-WS, canon-divergent | 67K | 12/? | Explicit): Assorted snippets post-they're gonna send us to prison for jerks 💙. Chapter 12: Maybe there was some modern context Bucky was missing. Not that it mattered. What mattered here was Bucky’s innovative new plan to combine winning date night with pranking Steve. Because what was better than getting Steve all hot and bothered? Getting Steve hot and bothered while mildly terrorizing him with terrible Captain America merchandise, that was what.
💙 This Side of the Blue by notlucy/ @notlucy (Mermaid AU | 27/44 | 97K | Explicit): A trick was the only explanation for what Steve saw floating there. This figment of his childhood. This myth. This legend. Within the tank, the siren bared its teeth.
Solitary by exclamation/ @jessicameats (Canon divergent | 38/? | 94K | Mature): The Winter Soldier has been a prisoner of SHIELD for about a year and a half, placed in solitary confinement under strict security when it was clear he wasn’t going to respond to the best interrogators and deprogrammers SHIELD had available. When Fury asks a newly awakened Steve Rogers to assist, Steve is hesitant. He doesn’t understand why Fury thinks he would have a better chance of getting through to this guy than all the people who have tried and failed.
💙 Political Animals by crinklefries, Deisderium (Modern AU, politics | 1/9 | 5K | Explicit): Okay, so the real problem is that you shouldn’t fuck your arch-rival, political enemy, and the person you loathe the most in the world where you work. Or like, at least, you shouldn’t keep doing that.
Re-Read
Flying Practice by cyclamental (Dragonriders of Pern AU | 11K | Explicit): Bucky gets his ass-cherry popped, an allegory heavily inspired by the Dragonriders of Pern. So, you know - First Time, but with dragons.
💙 some days i (wish that i wasn't myself) by notcaycepollard, Roga (Evanstan AU, journalist Seb, actor Chris | 6K | Mature): The problem, Seb never meant to say out loud, has always been that if he got Chris Evans’ dick in his mouth it would definitely end up making the story.
mere colors by brostucky (orphan_account) (Soulmates Uni AU | 27K | Teen): That’s when Bucky takes a deep breath and shoves his way through the crowd. And, really, it’s that moment that shit starts to hit the fan.
Stars Out Of The Blue by luninosity (Evanstan RPF | 6,3K | Teen): Chris Evans accidentally kicks Sebastian Stan off a broken helicarrier set on Monday afternoon. It’s the worst moment of his life. Monday evening, however, contains the best moment. Indisputably. Ever.

Conversation
Twelfth Night characters ranked by how aware they are of their own gayness
Viola: Has an entire flustered soliloquy/gay crisis after a girl flirts with her. Definitely latches onto her crush on Orsino to avoid acknowledging any enjoyment of Olivia’s flirtation. Budding genderfluid icon who keeps coming up with excuses to dress as a guy? 4/10
Sebastian: Look, the guy accidentally married a complete stranger, there’s no way he has awareness of ANYTHING. On the other hand, Antonio emphasizes that they spent both days AND nights together for three months, so ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) 5/10 as a compromise
Orsino: Possibly one of the most oblivious men in the planet? Definitely had feelings for Viola even when he thought she was a guy, but shoved said feelings away and projected harder onto his wooing of Olivia. Probably relieved when Viola revealed the truth about her disguise, but can’t quite forget about the whole Cesario thing. 2/10
Olivia: Either an insightful bicon who saw through Viola’s disguise immediately or just subconsciously sapphic. Seems to kind of have her shit together compared to other characters though? 7/10
Sir Toby: Chaotically oblivious bisexual who has no-homoed away some extremely gay situations. 3/10
Maria: There’s literally no textual evidence that she’s anything other than straight, but I like to think she’s the civilized bi counterpart to Sir Toby’s feral bi energy. Also, Sir Toby calls her “Penthesilea” once, the name of a bi icon Amazon queen from Greek mythology. 7/10
Malvolio: Impossible for me to imagine canon Malvolio as anything other than a killjoy straight man. 0/10.
Feste: Literally impossible for me to imagine Feste as completely cisgender & heterosexual. Generally more aware of what’s up than everyone else so probably in touch with himself. 10/10.
Sir Andrew: More interested in hanging out with Sir Toby than actually courting Olivia but has so little original intention/thought that he can’t recognize what a crush is. Definitely has no idea what sex even is. -1000/10
Fabian: Living embodiment of “do it for the vine.” No proof he’s not heterosexual, but no proof that he IS. 6/10.
Antonio: The man, the myth, the LEGEND. Gayly risks his life for Sebastian, gives him all his money, and says that not being with Sebastian would kill him. Also, he’s a pirate, which we all know is the gayest profession. 1000/10.
#hello i made this instead of ACTUALLY studying for my shakespeare exam#definitely inspired by the fact that the girl playing sir andrew in my college's production is playing him as incredibly oblivious & gay#twelfth night#shakespeare#lulu speaks#lulu talks shakespeare

this is a post about ezra, lucy and vanessa's excellent (bandito) adventure. it's long. and i can't put a read more on my ipad apparently? whatever i'll add one later
mohegan sun/uncasville connecticut was first
we drove down at midnight and got to the motel at like.......2am dfjggsfhgjf
that venue remains the wildest thing in the universe
we were 70-75 in line which! was totally good and reasonable for having got there at like...,.10am. casino venues are so good.
once the venue started giving us "official" numbers/wristbands based on our initial line we got to witness the security head of tour (tom, icon, legend) shut down a bunch of angry dads who were trying to get their kids to the head of the line LOL
tom is so good he respects us so much as fans and like, respects our lines and the way we run things. i love him.
me and lucy went for press conference meet&greet at like 4ish. that was the wildest part i think.
there were 17 of us in the room (holy shit)
it was everyone's first time meeting them! which i was so happy about given the Certain People who've "won" these things like 5+ times lmao
i'm not gonna go into all the questions because the video will be out eventually
but know that tyler and josh were sooo sweet and gave really in depth answers. they said a lot of the questions were really good so like shout out to everyone who won we had a good crew with good questions in that room
i'm bummed about this part only because the radio station kinda...misled on how this was gonna go but like. we literally got maximum 5 seconds with the pilots. like i shook josh's hand and we took the picture and i didn't even get to interact with tyler :/ i was gonna ask josh to write out a tattoo but we didn't have Any time
obv i'm so greatful for the experience and everything but i wish the station had told us it was a photo op and def not a meet and greet cause there was definitely zero meeting happening there
but the show was so good like we were really close to josh and got to touch the platforms and stuff and.. tyler did hoty on josh's side? so somehow we got like the entire experience? which was insane
the show was amazing it like nearly made up for the weird meet and greet experience
we took a baby bandito under our wing named sebastian and then at the end of the show? some dude was throwing around the f-slur around him and he got really upset cause he thought it was directed at him (reasonably) and me and vanessa got SO MAD and like. went after him lol. i think he learned his lesson
the squad (seven of us total lol) went to johnny rockets after because everything in a casino is open dummy late it was great i had the best grilled cheese of my life
PENN STATE WAS SO WEIRD
penn state/university park whatever
we drove like 6 hours to get there directly after ct lol
the venue was so bad lol like. it was in the middle of campus and they made us walk around the venue like 3 times during the opener :/ just to get wristbands and then ANOTHER lap to get to the single entrance to the pit. and none of the staff knew like anything lol
vanessa couldn't get a beer one of the concession people told her that they weren't serving it at that show because it was a "young crowd". i guarantee half the crowd at least was over 21 like what
the crowd was super weird and like me lucy and vanessa were the only ones dancing until we came across these two girls going HARD and we were like PLEASE DANCE WITH US
they made the show shout out to them
tyler fucked up the second verse of house of gold heehee
i high fived tyler!
we saw like 3 deer on the way there and back from the hotel
the whole show was very surreal
PHILLYYY
we had a whole ass day to drive over from penn state and just chill and oh my god it was so nice
i used to live in philly for a little while so it was so nice to be able to go back to those places
we got our my blood tattoos and the guys were sooo chill and cool. shoutout to philadelphia eddie's tattoo
also found some cool shops including: gay local art, oddities and taxidermy, and punk clothes. quality shit
philly show was soooo good. we got to see so many folks including @teeentyonepilots !!
moshpit happened and it was GOOD
fist bumped brad
high fived josh
got emotional about The World and My Life and Being Alive
i love twenty one pilots
good night

Spirit of SA art exhibition showcases state's people, places and icons to support children with cancer - ABC News
Among the lovelier lyrics in Don McLean's song about Vincent van Gogh are those that refer to "faces lined in pain" being "soothed beneath the artist's loving hand".
Key points:
Something of that tender spirit is reflected at Mark Lobert's Port Adelaide studio, where, for the past few months, an impressive act of artistic altruism has been taking shape.
"Hopefully we've done SA proud because we're very proud of this collection," Lobert said when describing the project.
Painting is a painstaking business, but these portraits and landscapes are about alleviating pain — specifically, the pain of very sick children.
Collectively, the 42 canvases will comprise the Spirit of SA exhibition, and they depict prominent South Australian faces, places and icons.
From Monday, they will be on display at Adelaide's Westpac House, and will be auctioned online to raise at least $100,000 for the Childhood Cancer Association (CCA), to support children battling the illness.
Subjects include rock legend Jimmy Barnes, actress Theresa Palmer, the Hills Hoist, Kangaroo Island's Remarkable Rocks, chef Maggie Beer, and pop singer Guy Sebastian.
There are also the ABC's Collinswood building, AFLW star Chelsea Randall and former prime minister Julia Gillard.
"As a female in politics, and in general, she's an amazing person," Lobert said of Gillard.
"The painting that has been done of Barnesy is linked in with the Largs Pier Hotel.
"That image would have to be one of my favourites."
The project has evolved collaboratively — fellow artist Phil Hodgson has worked closely with Lobert, and it is testament to their commitment to the cause that both have volunteered their time.
Each has brought different and complementary skills.
Hodgson's talents include the ability to capture the lineaments of a human face, while Lobert has focused on non-human subjects, as well as colour schemes and other touches.
42 paintings in 30 weeks
In person, Lobert can look a little like a canvas himself — his arms are impressively inked, and his paint-stained shirt resembles a palette for mixing colours.
His studio is every bit the artist's den.
It is brimming with brushes, paint pots, blank canvases, and works in progress, and its floor is so densely covered with splashes of pigment that it resembles an example of Jackson Pollock's abstract expressionism.
But the paintings themselves suggest other suitably eclectic influences.
A carton of Farmers Union Iced Coffee, a packet of FruChocs and a selection of frog cakes evoke Andy Warhol's soup cans, while the blues and yellows of an image of Adelaide's skyline bring to mind van Gogh's Starry Night.
"I kind of love colour, I'm always trying to chase colour — I need to have colour all around me," Lobert said.
Despite that passion, he admits the production of 42 sizeable works in about 30 weeks has been a challenge.
But when he admitted, "I won't lie — it's been very stressful", he spoke with the smile of someone who knows the finish line is in sight.
"They have taken a lot of time," he said.
"Originally, we were going to start off with about 14 — then it went to 20, and 25 went to 30, then it bloomed out to 38 and shot out to 42."
'The fight of his life'
The driving force behind the project has been media identity and CCA ambassador Mark Soderstrom.
"I thought, we've got to be grateful for where we live, what can we do to raise $70,000 to $100,000?" he said.
"What if we try and showcase the best part of South Australia, and then auction them off for Childhood Cancer?
"They need something like $1.3 million a year to function and provide their services, so if we could put a dent in that, it'd be bloody brilliant."
Soderstrom admits he is is not "arty" himself — but he is impressed by the power of art not only to raise funds but to provide respite.
Through CCA, he struck up a friendship with Lobert.
Their work has put them in contact with some harrowing stories.
Soderstrom recalled the case of Jaxon, "an unbelievably brave little boy" who was undergoing palliative care at the Women's and Children's Hospital.
"He was in the fight of his life, and his parents called him Iron Man because he was so strong," Soderstrom said.
Soderstrom asked Lobert to paint a picture of the superhero for Jaxon, to go over his hospital bed.
"Every time he woke up, with the time he had left, all he could see was Iron Man."
Easing the burden on children like Jaxon is at the heart of the Spirit of SA.
"Our father passed away with cancer," Lobert said.
"So whenever I hear of any [fundraiser] that's to do with cancer, it's always going to be a 'yes'.
"I love to be able to give."

CALM DOWN, IT'S THE MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS WITH OUR FAVORITE DIVAS, DIVOS & FRESH NEW ARTISTS!
By DJ FR8-O
The world's most unpredictable awards show just threw us another curveball. Hosting this year's hottest night in music is comedian and actor Sebastian Maniscalco. Yeah, never heard of him either, but the outspoken Italian is ready to bring the laughs and the chutzpah back into the VMAs. Joining him will be all our favorite divas, divos and fresh new artists who've been dominating our playlists over the last 12 months. This year's ceremony is going to be a battle of the pop princesses with both Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift snatching 10 nominations each. Who will take home the most Moon Persons is yet to be seen, but here are my top picks.
BEST NEW ARTIST Ava Max Billie Eilish H.E.R. Lil Nas X Rosalía
Lizzo It may seem like Lizzo just came out of nowhere and went straight to the front of the class, but she's been schooling her fans since she was 14 years old. In an industry that puts so much pressure on image and tries to hide flaws with photoshop and camera tricks, Lizzo celebrates her curves and literally puts it all out there. Her confidence is only overshadowed by her talent, with a stream of hits and sold-out shows over the past year.
BEST COLLABORATION BTS (featuring Halsey): "Boy with Luv" Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)" Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello: "Señorita" Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber: "I Don't Care" Taylor Swift (featuring Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco): "Me!"
Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper: "Shallow" As if she wasn't jaw-droppingly gifted all on her own, no one has ever brought the on-screen chemistry as Gaga and Cooper did in the big-screen blockbuster A Star is Born. The heat was so intense that it raised suspicions of the two being more than just co-stars. While those rumors have since been squashed, I still get a few raised hairs every time I hear their duet from the diva's Oscar-winning film.
BEST POP 5 Seconds of Summer: "Easier" Cardi B and Bruno Mars: "Please Me" Billie Eilish: "Bad Guy" Ariana Grande: "Thank U, Next" Khalid: "Talk" Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down"
Jonas Brothers: "Sucker" Everyone has their opinion of what makes a great pop song, or in this case a great pop video, but I'm sure you would agree that Nick soaking in a claw foot tub and Joe tied up in his underwear would be somewhere at the top of the list. Not only does this earworm bury deep into your brain with its throwback vibe and razor-sharp hook, but watching these guys all grown up and having more fun than ever makes this clip as timeless as the track. Did I mention the bathtub?
BEST HIP HOP 21 Savage (featuring J. Cole): "A Lot" Cardi B: "Money" DJ Khaled (featuring Nipsey Hussle and John Legend): "Higher" Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)" Travis Scott (featuring Drake): "Sicko Mode"
2 Chainz (featuring Ariana Grande): "Rule the World" Is there nothing that Ari can't do? It's hard to tell who the actual guest artist is on this track, but are we really surprised? Even during her early days on "Bang Bang," she managed to hold her own with two powerhouse divas. Now it looks like she's the one bringing the noise.
BEST R&B Childish Gambino: "Feels Like Summer" H.E.R. (featuring Bryson Tiller): "Could've Been" Alicia Keys: "Raise a Man" Normani (featuring 6lack): "Waves" Anderson .Paak (featuring Smokey Robinson): "Make It Better"
Ella Mai: "Trip" After a 13 year absence from the show, the R&B category is back! Maybe it's because of the genre's resurgence into mainstream music; but whatever the reason, it's opening doors to a whole new pool of talent that may otherwise be overlooked, like this incredibly gifted and well-deserved artist.
BEST LATIN Anuel AA and Karol G: "Secreto" Benny Blanco, Tainy, Selena Gomez and J Balvin: "I Can't Get Enough" Daddy Yankee (featuring Snow): "Con Calma" Maluma: "Mala Mía" Rosalía and J Balvin (featuring El Guincho): "Con Altura"
Bad Bunny (featuring Drake): "Mia" Watching this video reminded me of growing up in Miami, and showing up at the impromptu house party that someone hosted while their parents were away. Of course, Drake never showed up to any of them, but of all the nominees, this one captures what everyday Latin life is really about, minus all the half-naked women.
BEST DANCE The Chainsmokers (featuring Bebe Rexha): "Call You Mine" Clean Bandit (featuring Demi Lovato): "Solo" DJ Snake (featuring Selena Gomez, Ozuna and Cardi B): "Taki Taki" David Guetta, Bebe Rexha and J Balvin: "Say My Name" Marshmello and Bastille: "Happier"
Silk City and Dua Lipa: "Electricity" Music trends will come and go, but classic house will never go out of style. These guys took the essence of "Show Me Love" and "Finally" and weaved it into a track that's as fresh as it is nostalgic. Throw in Lipa's sultry vocals weaving a hypnotic melody and you've got yourself a dance anthem that no one can resist.
VIDEO FOR GOOD Jamie N Commons and Skylar Grey (featuring Gallant): "Runaway Train" Halsey: "Nightmare" The Killers: "Land of the Free" John Legend: "Preach" Lil Dicky: "Earth"
Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down" It can't be a coincidence that this category debuted the same year as this track. In a time when LGBTQ lives are being attacked – physically and politically – on the daily, it's refreshing and inspiring to see an artist take a stand and put her influence where her mouth is. Not only is the track brilliantly written, but I haven't seen that many LGBTQ icons together since the Tony Awards.
BEST DIRECTION Billie Eilish: "Bad Guy" (Director: Dave Meyers) FKA Twigs: "Cellophane" (Director: Andrew Thomas Huang) Ariana Grande: "Thank U, Next" (Director: Hannah Lux Davis) Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)" (Director: Calmatic) LSD: "No New Friends" (Director: Dano Cerny)
Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down" (Director: Taylor Swift and Drew Kirsch) Okay, I know what you're thinking, "this queen must be a huge T-Swift fan, so he's voting for her in every category." Quite the contrary, actually. I've always been pretty lukewarm when it comes to the country-turned-pop singer, but any director that could wrangle that many divas in one video shoot and not end up on the nightly news deserves a trophy.
BEST VISUAL EFFECTS DJ Khaled (featuring SZA): "Just Us" (Visual Effects: GloriaFX, Sergii Mashevskyi and Anatolli Kuzmytskyi) Billie Eilish: "When the Party's Over" (Visual Effects: Ryan Ross and Andres Jaramillo) FKA Twigs: "Cellophane" (Visual Effects: Analog) Ariana Grande: "God Is a Woman" (Visual Effects: Fabrice Lagayette at Mathematic) LSD: "No New Friends" (Visual Effects: Ethan Chancer)
Taylor Swift (featuring Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco): "Me!" (Visual Effects: Loris Paillier and Lucas Salton for BUF VFX) I'd hand over the award for this vid just for the visual of a smoldering Brendon Urie alone, but if you've seen the clip you know the allure is more than just his pretty face. Reminiscent of a modern Moulin Rouge, the screen oozes with splashes of color, action and special effects galore, from start to finish.
BEST ART DIRECTION BTS (featuring Halsey): "Boy with Luv" (Art Directors: JinSil Park and BoNa Kim (MU:E) Ariana Grande: "7 Rings" (Art Director: John Richoux) Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)" (Art Director: Christian Zollenkopf for Prettybird) Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down" (Art Director: Brittany Porter) Kanye West and Lil Pump (featuring Adele Givens): "I Love It" (Art Director: Tino Schaedler)
Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello: "Señorita" (Art Director: Tatiana Van Sauter) In a world where videos are trying to be bigger, brighter and bolder than the last, it takes a good eye to keep things in the background simple and let the singers take the spotlight. Subtlety is an art in itself, especially when it's meant to help a love story unfold before your eyes. My only note is that we need to see more of Shawn in his Calvin Klein's next time.
BEST CHOREOGRAPHY FKA Twigs: "Cellophane" (Choreographer: Kelly Yvonne) LSD: "No New Friends" (Choreographer: Ryan Heffington) Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello: "Señorita" (Choreographer: Calvit Hodge) Rosalía and J Balvin (featuring El Guincho): "Con Altura" (Choreographer: Charm La'Donna) Solange: "Almeda" (Choreographers: Maya Taylor and Solange Knowles)
BTS (featuring Halsey): "Boy with Luv" (Choreographers: Son Sungdeuk and Quick Crew) K-pop isn't exactly on heavy rotation on my playlists, but I must give credit where credit is due. Sure, the competition shows some beautiful moves of their own, but this vid is all about color, dancing, and more dancing. Don't ask me what they're singing about, but I could tell they were having fun while singing it.
ARTIST OF THE YEAR Cardi B Billie Eilish Halsey Jonas Brothers Shawn Mendes
Ariana Grande This may seem like I'm playing faves here, but if you take a look at all the work the other nominees have put out in the last year together, they still don't add up to the number of albums, singles, videos and collaborations Ari has checked off her to-do list. While it may not have been ground-breaking, and there's no doubt this award will actually go to Billie Eillish, no one can argue that this diva has put in more blood, sweat and tears this year than any other artist in the biz.
SONG OF THE YEAR Drake: "In My Feelings" Ariana Grande: "Thank U, Next" Jonas Brothers: "Sucker" Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper: "Shallow" Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)"
Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down" Yeah, I'm going there again because this is an anthem we all need to hear and remember; not just this year, but for many years to come until the tables are turned, the planets are realigned and the haters finally take their seats for good.
VIDEO OF THE YEAR 21 Savage (featuring J. Cole): "A Lot" Billie Eilish: "Bad Guy" Ariana Grande: "Thank U, Next" Jonas Brothers: "Sucker" Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)"
Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down" The same goes for the video! While others might have tried to battle hate with hate, Swift chose instead to take the high road, celebrate our community, shine a spotlight on some of our favorite LGBTQ icons and hold an honest mirror up at those with narrow minds. One little music video won't change the world overnight, but if it can inspire a new generation to think differently than the one before them, then that's something to get excited about.
The 2019 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from the Prudential Center in Newark on August 26th at 8 p.m. ET.
