Hirano to Kagiura light novel translation 4-5
Chapter 4: Fall.
Part 5
Prev || Next
Soon after walking around the festival while eating lunch with Kagiura, it was time for Hirano’s shift, so at the moment he is dressed as Oiwa-san.
He’s stationed in the area around the exit. In the middle of a passageway where it seems like there’s nothing scary, a fake pillar has been constructed to create a place for him to hide.
It’s an obvious place from the standpoint of the guests walking around, but that’s the point. If the places where they jump out and scare them are too unexpected, they might fall over or something. And this way, the guests will be able to see the SFX makeup.
That’s their plan of attack for this haunted house, and indeed, Hirano looks so terrifying as a ghost that popping up in unexpected places would be too dangerous.
He gives the guests two minutes of downtime upon entering the haunted house, but every time he slowly pushes his wig out of the way to show his face after the initial jumpscare, he gets a delightful scream from the two-stage trick.
Suddenly, he hears the pattering of footsteps.
Assuming they’re running, Hirano refrains from stepping out in front of them. He gets the feeling that the terrified guest is trying to escape the haunted house without letting themselves cry out.
Sure enough, someone is speed-walking a little behind the person they’re chasing.
“Hey, come on, Niibashi! I told you not to run!”
Wait, I know this voice.
It sounds familiar, and he realizes it’s Kagiura.
When he unthinkingly gives him a glimpse of his face, Kagiura looks his way and freezes on the spot.
“What’s with you? Come on, keep it moving.”
And after I told him not to come!
Hirano’s kind of uncomfortable being seen with long hair, and he reaches up his hand to take off the wig. It’s a little early to take a break, but naturally he doesn’t want his close companion to see him in drag.
“I think you even look good like this, Hirano-sa…”
To his disbelief, Kagiura had laid his hand on Hirano’s head. And now, when he tries to push the wig away from his face, he sees the made-up part that’d been hidden and lets out a loud yelp.
Seeing Kagiura play Hirano’s own trick himself is hilarious, and Hirano howls with laughter. He can’t help it, seeing someone play themself like that.
This time Hirano’s the one to close the distance between them.
Why don’t I give him a good, long look?
Kagiura had also started laughing, so Hirano had assumed he’d already gotten used to his appearance, but he screams again and suddenly leaps forward.
Hirano’s feet, clad in geta under his yukata, are particularly susceptible to surprise attacks. He can’t support Kagiura’s weight as he falls, so they go down together.
With a thud, they land in a heap right in the middle of the haunted house’s passageway.
The next guests, who’d caught up to them before they knew it, cry out at the sight of their entwined bodies laying atop one another.
“Huh…WAAAH-?!”
Startled, Hirano and Kagiura clamber to their feet, just as flustered.
Of the two girls who’d arrived, one had been walking a bit ahead of the other, and she’d been the one to let out a scream. For some reason, she grabs the other girl’s hand and drags her back around the corner they’d just come from, her voice coming out a little strange as she speaks.
“S-s-s-sorry! We didn’t see anything!”
“What’s wrong?” Apparently the other girl has not grasped the situation, and raises her voice in concern.
“N-n-n-nothing!”
Hirano thought her voice sounded a bit off, but figures, well, she’s probably just scared, since she just saw a ghost pull another guest down on top of him.
He sets his wig back in place while straightening the disarrayed hem of his yukata.
“Sorry, Kagi-kun. I screwed around too much. Go find your friend.”
“Fiiine.”
“Sorry, that was probably weird to walk in on,” he apologizes to the two girls they’d kept waiting.
“Not at all! We got to see something amazing!” The one girl replies, though Hirano doesn’t quite get her drift. She probably just means because Kagiura’s hot.
“Ah, after all that, we ended up ruining the haunted house vibe, sorry.”
Hirano rummages around in Sasaki’s bag, which was kept to the side, and foists some candy onto the girls.
“I’ll give you this to make up for it, so don’t hold it against us.”
He covers the half of his face with the makeup, which had gotten messed up by the disheveled wig, so he doesn’t scare them. Unfortunately, handing them something in this manner probably just makes it even more like a horror movie. It’d be bad to scare them while apologizing, though.
“Eek! Okay!” Just like earlier, the girl’s voice sounds just a bit off as she replies.
When it’s time for the shift change, Sasaki, portraying Hanako, returns. It doesn’t take him long to notice his bag’s been opened, and he astutely notices the difference from how he left it.
“I kinda feel like some of my candy’s gone.”
“Oh, I gave it to some customers.”
“Why, what for?”
Sasaki adds, “I get them all the time, so it’s fine if it’s just a little,” but he still seems suspicious, and Hirano wonders just how much he should explain.
Well, it’s not that big a deal, he concludes, and gives him the short version.
“It’s hush money.”
He doesn’t particularly want to tell him about his and Kagiura’s horizontal exploration.
“Sounds kinda sus.”
“Huh? No, it's wholesome. Oh yeah, give me one more piece. I’ll pay you back.”
“Uh, as long as it’s not one of the milk ones, I don’t really care. You can just have it.”
“Nah, I’ll pay for this one, since it’s for personal use.”
A strange expression crosses Sasaki’s face at Hirano’s request. The look in his eyes is enough to voice his doubt.
“Hm? ….I kinda feel like you’ve changed.”
His own countenance has changed quite a bit. His smile has stretched into a leer.
Sasaki’s just about the last person Hirano wants to be told that by.
“Huh? Where the hell did that come from?”
“Haven’t you become really considerate?”
Hirano has a hunch that if he doesn’t change the subject, he’s going to end up getting teased.
“No idea.”
Turning his face away as if to push the thought aside, he rummages around in his wallet.
“Here, compensation.” He hands over some pocket change in exchange for the candy. There are plenty of other pieces in Sasaki’s bag.
If what he says is correct, and he really has become more considerate, that would be Kagiura’s influence.
Even if he’s seriously worried about him, he won’t make a difference just by unilaterally butting in—he’d learned this while living with him. He’s learned about joy and feelings of gratitude, as well.
Lately, he’s been thinking that his parents naturally understanding each other is probably the result of communicating their thoughts to each other before he’d been born, and sharing the feeling of treasuring their partner.
That’s why, he should communicate even with his platonic friends.
“Oh yeah, about what happened before summer vacation.”
Although Hirano is a bit self-conscious, it’s now or never, so he decides to broach the topic.
“Hm?”
“The incident behind the school building. Your injuries all better yet?”
Hirano had been so fired up to find the culprits and resolve the incident before summer break, that what he should’ve said to Sasaki has been a loose thread.
“You’re talking about way back then? They’re long since healed.”
“I see…thanks for helping my kouhai.”
He’d meant to say it nonchalantly, but Sasaki’s voice rises in undisguised shock.
“You saying something like that…wild.”
“Shut up.”

Hirano to Kagiura light novel translation Epilogue
Epilogue: Good things
Prev ||
I know, I know, I'm a day late. But we're finally here! We've reached the end of this way-longer-than-expected journey 🙌 thank you all so much for sticking with me this long, even as the official TL was released. It's been a blast 💖 I'll be drawing the name for the giveaway after this, so stay tuned!
Cleanup for the cultural festival goes by much quicker than the preparations had.
Breaking down everything they’d worked so hard to make was disappointing, but even the wistfulness of the demolition process was a part of the joy.
That, Kagiura thought, was probably what he’d say if he were a bit more sophisticated.
Since becoming a part of the executive committee, being that frenzied during the preparation period was unavoidable. For as much as he’d relied on Niibashi for the paperwork, he planned to work just as hard leading the cleanup efforts.
Thanks to that, his lower back is quite sore.
As a result, his arrival at the dorms is no later than usual.
He’s not sure when, but at some point the kinmokusei hedge had started blooming.
“Hey, welcome home.”
“I’m home. You’re back early, Hirano-san.”
The haunted house had been a large-scale production, so he would’ve thought cleanup would take a long time, but Hirano’s presence in the dorm suggests he slipped out early.
“Did you have something you needed to do?”
“Yeah.”
When he hands him something without saying another word, Kagiura blinks in surprise.
“Hm? Candy?”
“You didn’t get to be scared properly at the haunted house.”
Was that even a problem?
Kagiura had been troubled by not only knocking Hirano down, but by being seen like that by students from other schools. Whether he’d been scared or not wasn’t the issue.
But apparently Hirano had been worried about it.
“It was scary enough, though, that special effects makeup,” Kagiura remarks nonchalantly.
“That’s what got you scared, though. You totally missed out on the best parts of the haunted house. Well, you can have this as an apology. Your throat’s been giving you a hard time lately, right?”
“.....”
He’s always like this, he thinks.
He always meets me where I am with so much kindness.
“Wait, do you not like candy? No, you were eating some brown sugar candy the other day.”
“.....I like it.”
Slowly, Kagiura’s heart grows hot. He shouldn’t be feeling this warm over this, yet here he is.
The act of being considered by Hirano makes him happier than anything. Though, he does also like candy.
“Oh, good.”
“I like it!”
The meaning of this phrase, the true meaning, is too much to convey no matter how many times he says it.
“I got it the first time.”
Hirano’s side profile as he laughs, flustered, is stunning.
And words completely fail him.
They head to the dining hall a little earlier than usual. While Kagiura is eating his dinner, the chair next to Hirano’s is pulled back.
There aren’t that many people he’s gotten close with while living in the dorms. Their visitor is none other than dorm leader Hanzawa.
Usually, Kagiura’s part of the late crowd thanks to club practice, so it’s rare for them to cross paths.
“Where’s your roomie?”
Kagiura startles at Hirano’s nondescript statement.
I wonder if I get called the same way.
It sounds intimate, relaxed.
“He was so busy with the cultural festival that he’s crashed out. I couldn’t wake him up, so I just left him there.”
Traces of exhaustion also tinge Hanzawa’s voice, so it feels like Kagiura’s eavesdropping on a private conversation, and he almost wants to excuse himself.
Having finished his salad, he silently confronts his Chinese stir-fry. But before long, his chopsticks stop in mid-air.
There’s tons of peppers.
Hanzawa, always keen to subtleties, quickly takes notice.
“You’re not going to eat them?” He asks.
Simultaneously, Hirano says only “one piece.” How kind.
“...Okay, fine.”
He can manage just one piece, so he restrains his protesting stomach and somehow swallows down a pepper. Hirano’s eyes crinkle at the sight of his efforts.
“Good job.”
“I did my best. But, I can’t eat anymore…”
“What am I going to do with you?”
Hanzawa’s eyes widen at the intimate exchange. Have they forgotten he’s sitting right there?
The usually well-mannered Hirano reaches his chopsticks over the table to Kagiura’s plate, a gentle smile on his face.
After Hirano finishes eating the remaining peppers, and Kagiura expresses his gratitude with a “thank you, Hirano-san!”, Hanzawa finally pipes up.
“Nothing’s going on between you two, right?”
The tone of voice in which he asks Hirano this question is indescribably awkward.
“What’re you talking about? We’re just bros being bros. Right, Kagi-kun?”
“Bros…that’s one way to put it…”
With Hirano smiling at him so breezily, he can’t quite bring himself to nod along. His reaction ends up a little half-hearted.
“Am I wrong?” Hirano’s expression shows not a hint of foreboding, but Kagiura’s reaction raises some eyebrows. Hanzawa, who’d observed them both, whispers “Maybe so,” under his breath—but then he shakes his head as if to correct himself.
On the other hand, Kagiura says, “No, you’re not,” with a bashful smile.
He’d been called a friend, by Hirano. By the friend closest to his heart.
Joy gradually blossoms through him; when he speaks his words are from the very bottom of his heart. He’s probably grinning ear-to-ear.
“I’m really glad I met you, Hirano-san.”

Hirano to Kagiura light novel translation 4-4
Chapter 4: Fall.
Part 4
Prev || Next
At long last, tomorrow is the day of the cultural festival.
He’d thought they’d definitely stay late after school to prepare on the eve of the festival, but by rule of the student council, everyone had gone home at the same time today.
It can be said that this policy, which makes no allowances for the classes that were unable to finish their preparations in the time allotted, is typical of a school that values autonomy.
Even the culture clubs’ practices are restricted, and extracurricular activities are also entirely forbidden.
Thanks to that, Kagiura has been on pins and needles. Even though he’d tried to study in his room to suppress his flighty nerves, he can’t make himself focus on English vocabulary at all. Numerical formulas are somehow even more impossible.
Such being the case, he has since been reading a basketball magazine he subscribes to.
“Hey, you like cookies?”
At the sound of Hirano’s voice, Kagiura’s head snaps up.
“Yeah, I like ‘em!”
“Cool. I’ve got some left over that we made in home ec today; you want one?”
As he passes over a cookie, he adds, “I forgot all about them.”
Kagiura would’ve thought it’d just be the round type, but it’s the type of cookie with two colors so you can break it into pieces cleanly. It’s amazing. It looks especially good.
“Sure, I’ll take it!”
Male students’ homemade sweets are even more of a rarity than their homemade cooking.
Kagiura had made drop candy in his elementary school cooking class, which was his one and only experience in the subject.
“It’s all yours. There was one that Sasaki made, that he made look like a cat’s face, kind of like a tuxedo cat? It was super fancy. Should’ve taken a picture.”
“Did you make this one?”
“Yeah. We used the same dough, though.”
“I think yours is beautiful.”
“Huh? …Oh, haha, thanks. I kinda feel like you’re saying that to make me feel better, but I wasn’t trying to fish for compliments.”
“...Can I eat it now?”
It’ll be dinnertime soon.
“Ah…well, it’ll be our little secret. I’ll eat some, too.”
To Kagiura’s surprise, he puts a finger to his lips in the universal shh gesture.
Gguhh, Kagiura chokes on the cookie he’s already put in his mouth.
“What’s wrong?!”
From hanging out together for half a year, he should know that Hirano’s a soft person by nature, but he still can’t get over it.
“Th- the cookie got into my organs…”
“The fuck?!”
He likes him…maybe.
It shouldn’t leave the realm of maybe yet.
“Th- they were so tasty I kinda ate them too fast…”
Hirano bursts out laughing at his attempt to save face.
This guy laughs so much!
“Hahaha…Gotcha, I’m glad then, ahahaha.”
“Jeez, it’s not that funny!”
He covers his face with the open magazine, protesting that he’s already embarrassed enough, but Hirano’s still laughing as he apologizes.
“Damn. You know, if I ever get married, I hope I find someone who wears their heart on their sleeve like you do.”
At that moment, it’s as if time has stopped.
“.......?!”
Kagiura freezes, the basketball magazine falling from his hands.
“Oh, it’s dinnertime. Let’s go.”
Does he not realize what he just said?
No respect for the fact that he’s just taken Kagiura out in one hit.
Still in shock, Kagiura heads out for dinner slightly behind.
*****
On the long-awaited festival day, the skies are so clear it’s almost too hot.
Inside, the school is teeming with people.
As one would expect of the one day when even current students are allowed to wear casual clothes, there’s color everywhere you look.
Kagiura is wearing the original T-shirt his class had ordered.
The orange uniform, printed with the word “yakitori” and a drawing of meat skewers, stands out quite a bit for its simplicity.
Even as he’d listened to his classmates complain that they didn’t know what kind of casual clothes to wear at school, Kagiura had just figured “it’s hot, so a t-shirt is the only way to go”. But on the day of, he sort of understands how they feel.
The school where they spend all their time in uniforms is suddenly awash with all sorts of outfits. Just this fact is enough to make the vibe a little jittery, like they’re cutting loose.
Even Kagiura, who’s used to wearing casual clothes in the dorms, feels that way, so the students who commute from home probably feel even more out of place.
This time last year, Kagiura, whose choices of cram schools hadn’t been few, had not yet decided his future plans. As a result, he didn’t come to last year’s cultural festival, although it had been a perfect day to visit the school.
Everything he’s seeing is new to him, and although he’s been watching it all come together, each new wonder just deepens his excitement.
And of course, all of the food looks delicious.
Before noon, when he goes to visit Hirano’s class, cultural festival pamphlet in hand, Hirano soon appears, dressed in his favorite white T-shirt.
He lets Kagiura decide their itinerary, since “it’s my second year at this”.
They walk past someone holding up a sign that reads “Cheesy yakisoba in the courtyard!!”
He may be a rival in the Courtyard Stall battle, but Kagiura plans to go buy from them later.
The line for the yakitori stand is quite long; it’s grown from the time Kagiura was managing the stall in the morning.
After they get through the line and are handed a cup of yakitori, Kagiura takes them here and there, tugging at Hirano’s arm.

Hirano to Kagiura light novel translation 2-4
Chapter 2: Summer preparations.
Part 4
Prev || Next
Basketball club practice is held inside the gym for the most part, but they use the outdoor space for warm-up runs.
They can hear the wind instruments club tuning and practicing marches, and it feels like they have their own personal pep band.
Although they keep hydrated, warm sweat flows freely.
While squinting against the blazing sunlight, Kagiura thinks of Hirano’s bright blonde hair.
Dyed blonde despite his position in the student council, Hirano’s hair is unfortunately quite damaged. It suits him so well, though.
And the small earrings that normally adorn his earlobes are as of yet still missing in action.
Although it’s already been a week, Hirano seems unconcerned; as such, Kagiura is the more worried of the two.
If the piercings are healthy, they won’t easily close up, but they’re still technically wounds, so they’ll undoubtedly shrink if left unattended.
Hirano had told him they’re his first piercings, so Kagiura had asked “shouldn’t you hurry up and put something in them?”, to which Hirano had replied, “If I took them out at the same time, I should find them sooner or later”, and seemed content to leave well enough alone.
While he took shelter in the gym, mopping his sweaty face with the towel hanging around his neck, Kagiura thought about what color earrings would look good on Hirano.
His image of Hirano’s personal clothing is vague, since he only sees him in loungewear.
He would be able to see them on the weekend, but Kagiura’s days off are dedicated to club activities, so his chances to see him are few and far between.
At school, when he’s wearing his uniform, most of the time they don’t end up running into each other. In the mornings, Hirano wakes up first and even wakes Kagiura up, but even Hirano wouldn’t wear his uniform that early in the morning.
He returns to the dorm earlier than Kagiura, and by the time Kagiura gets home, he has long since changed into loungewear.
That’s why going the traditional route of choosing ones that will easily coordinate with his usual clothing is easier said than done.
Besides, we don’t have any free time before summer vacation to go buy some together.
So what is he supposed to do?
Kagiura tried to figure out where to go from there, but before long, the rest of the club members finished their run and foundational practice began.
If your head is in the clouds, it won’t be long before you get injured.
He had taken that concept to heart, so it only took a moment for him to switch gears and focus on practice.
It’s strange; when he gets in the zone, he doesn’t even care about getting sweaty. He can’t even tell if the wind instrument club’s performance is still audible from outside, through the gym doors that are closed to conserve their pathetically weak air conditioning.
The application review for the plan selection qualifiers went by without a hitch, and they passed through the second round of judging immediately afterwards with flying colors.
Niibashi is doing just as well as anticipated—in fact, he is going above and beyond. The presentation he gives with a smile brimming with confidence is overwhelmingly effective, and his preparation is immaculate.
They deliberately address the open question of food safety measures, and are now at the stage where they’ll probably be able to get a space in the courtyard or somewhere else that can accommodate their customers.
They were able to get through the research in just a few days thanks to their 2nd and 3rd year acquaintances, so they’re grateful.
Normally, upperclassmen make good use of their past experiences and prepare for the cultural festival ahead of time. That’s why it’s difficult for ill-prepared first years to win real estate in the courtyard, or so they’re told, but they faced their audition with such flawlessness that it was hard to believe they had completed it in such a rush.
Niibashi is excessively skilled at networking, so their stock of materials piles up with the help of other classes, and just like that Kagiura and the other two assistants take a back seat.
In contrast to the energy of the executive committees from the other classes with passionate appeals, the student council, who are in charge of the judging, are, to put it nicely, relaxed.
To put it not so nicely, their reactions are deadpanned, by which Kagiura was caught off guard.
One would think that the student council at a school where independence is so highly valued would be filled with the type of people who like planning things, but the student council president, Touou, seems to be the high-strung type.
As expected from someone who serves as the student council president as a second year, he’s used to directing others, and he even has a certain dignity about him as he subjects each proposal to a barrage of questions from on high, yet he doesn’t seem to enjoy doing so.
There was one other thing that was unexpected.
Which is that, the sometimes excessive amounts of nitpicking by the latter notwithstanding, Niibashi is actively involved with Touou.
I wonder if they’re good friends? Kagiura wonders, but he wouldn’t want to put a damper on them when they seemed to be enjoying themselves, so he bites his tongue.
*****
It isn’t long before summer vacation, so there were only morning classes today.
The gym is undergoing inspections and can’t be used, and the advisors are absent for training, so the coaches are also taking the day off, which means the basketball club isn’t meeting today.
That’s just fine by them, as it gives the first year club members the chance to go to a sports shop to purchase new shoes, which Kagiura, as a veteran, is happy to give recommendations for.
This shop is familiar with their school placing orders for uniforms, and they’re glad that the proprietor memorizes their faces and supports them even though they’re still just first years. Apparently he’s even come to see their practice matches.
His heart bounces on his way home, thinking he’ll ask Hirano about it too.
Despite eating lunch and going shopping, he still gets back much earlier than usual, and it’s not yet 3 o’clock. Even if he does his homework, time is just crawling by today.
“I’m home!”
There’s no response to his statement as he swings the door open.
“Huh…?”
Inside, Hirano’s bag is missing, as if he hasn’t come home yet.
Maybe he’s at a committee meeting, he thinks while he spreads a sheet out on the floor and begins tending to his club equipment.
After more or less cleaning up, he starts on his homework, imitating the self-study techniques Hirano had taught him.
If he could see this, would he be surprised?
But, contrary to his expectations, even when dusk falls there’s no sign of Hirano coming back.
Starting to get antsy, he opens the door to their room open halfway, but Hanzawa comes by and shuts it, saying “if you leave the door hanging open, it’ll be in the way!”
He’s on the same committee, which means it’s not a late-running meeting that’s holding Hirano up.
“Hanzawa-san, Hirano-san isn’t back yet—did he tell you he had something to take care of, or something?”
“Hm. I have no idea. Well, you’re not a child, so you’ll be fine. That aside, aren’t you going to go for dinner? I’m heading there now.”
Just as he’s said, dinnertime has indeed started. Although there’s a large window when you can go, you can never be too early if you don’t want to impact your bathing time.
“.....I’m coming.”
I really, really hope nothing’s wrong.
Slightly troubled, Kagiura follows behind Hanzawa.
Apparently, Hirano returned to the dorms just before dinnertime ended.
He went straight to the dining hall without even dropping off his bag, and didn’t come back to the room until after the first years’ bath time had started.
They kept just missing each other, and could say no more than passing greetings, but Hirano seemed to be in a bit of a bad mood.
He has always been the kind of person to speak brusquely, but it is rare for him to be so blatantly terse. I want to ask him about it, but would that be okay? What if it’s something serious that he can’t talk to me about?
He has a completely different set of problems from his comrade, because the depth of their lives are different by one year, a difference he can sense each and every day.
If Hirano has a problem he can’t resolve, there’s probably nothing Kagiura can do to help. If he asks him if anything happened, it might just make him even more upset.
But—he can’t just do nothing. That is the conclusion Kagiura came to.
While wondering how best to broach the subject, Kagiura leaves the bath, and hurries back to the room.
When he knocks lightly on the door and says “I’m back from the baths,” Hirano replies “yeah, welcome back,” in a lower tone than usual.
Hirano sits at his desk, the look in his eyes predictably sharp.
“What happened today?” Kagiura asks, although for a moment he almost folds under the pressure of that gaze.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You came home late today, Hirano-san. And it doesn’t seem like it was because of a committee meeting.”
“Oh…sorry. Did I worry you?”
“Yes. I was really worried.”
That’s right, he’s worried. He only realized it when Hirano said it.
The feeling of uneasiness that had been plaguing him all afternoon was an awful lot like the loneliness of being left home alone as a child.
Like the feelings he’d had when it seemed like he’d be swallowed up by the swirling anxiety at the thought that something must be something wrong with his parents, or something terrible had happened to his siblings, for them to not come home like this.
“I see. …..It’s not exactly a cheery story, though.”
“That’s okay.”
“There was a fight—or rather an incident of violence—at the school today. It was one-sided; the guys were playing dirty.”
A kouhai from the committee tried to get them to stop, but Hirano’s friend held him back, stepping in in his place, and sustained injuries.
Apparently the reason Hirano had been late is that after asking about the incident from his friend in the committee room, and then hearing what the first year victim and his kouhai had to say about it, he’d been discussing it with the committee advisor.
Hanzawa hadn’t known about it because the advisor had stopped Hirano from calling him back from the dorm even though he was the vice chairman.
“Do you not know who did it? I’m sure they’d be suspended or something…”
“The guy who stepped in to stop it isn’t that great at fighting, so the culprits were able to get away. He knew that they’re first years, but it’ll be summer break soon, so I don’t really know what’ll happen. …He won’t even tell me all the details, either. He probably thinks it’d be lame to snitch or something.”
The longer he talks, the more it seems like he’s just going off on his friend. But rather than being angry at him, it seems more like there’s something else spurring him on. Regret, perhaps, or frustration.
Imagining the pain of someone he’s supposed to be close with refusing to talk to him, Kagiura gently reaches out his hand.
He strokes that beautiful blonde hair.
Although their usual roles are reversed, this is essentially what Hirano always does for him.
Listening to him talk, comforting him, encouraging him. Hirano does it more skillfully, but for Kagiura as he is now, he doesn’t have the words to nurse his indignation.
As he smoothes down his hair, Hirano’s eyes go wide.
“.....What.”
“I thought if I did this maybe you’d calm down.”
“.....”
Letting out a small huff, Hirano murmurs, “you’re right.” The tension slowly drains from his face..
He makes such soft expressions.
Now it’s Kagiura’s turn to be surprised. Hirano’s just like a cat that’s warmed up to him.
“Hey. How long do you plan on rubbing my head?”
No sooner had he spoken than Kagiura pulled his hand back, but even after Hirano leaves for the baths, Kagiura flops onto his bed and ponders how comfortable it felt to stroke that blonde hair.
Twenty minutes later, Hirano returns from the bath, having washed away his sweat and his air of gloom.
Having sat at his desk and pulled out a map of the school, he says, “I’ll do what I can to get this taken care of before summer break,” his usual vigor restored. He’s not sulking at all. He’s back to his normal self.
When Kagiura asks about it upon his return from the bath, Hirano tells him that after discussing with Hanzawa, they’d decided on a plan of action moving forward. It seems the best thing to do is to check out the vicinity the perpetrators had been walking in, and ask the clubs and groups that use that area at the time of the incident for eyewitness statements to try to deduce the culprits.
Putting out a notice aimed at students in clubs seemed unlikely to succeed, but the thought was that if anyone had been acting strangely after the fight, someone might’ve noticed.
After that, with not only Hanzawa but the collective force of the whole disciplinary committee to gather intel and the support of the faculty advisor, they were able to suss out the culprits before summer break.
The school decided to take disciplinary action against them, due to their maliciousness and the fact that there was a second assault.
Just as Hirano had declared, it was just in time for summer break.
Upon returning to his room after chatting with the club senpai who were also dorm students, Kagiura finds that Hirano had already finished getting ready for bed and turned off his desk lamp. It is unusual for him to try to go to sleep early without studying or reading.
Kagiura follows his lead and softly crawls into bed.
Normal classes end tomorrow. The day after that is the closing ceremony.
The basketball club has practice for the weekend practice matches, so Kagiura won’t have the chance to see Hirano, who’s going home immediately, until the new semester.
As his awareness of this fact sinks in, so does his loneliness.
He didn’t sign up for the mock exam, but his week is full of morning make-up classes, so there’s just no way to swing it.
I never thought I’d come to feel like this.
He’s become fond of that flashy personality that caught him off guard at first.
But that was really just the beginning. Things like moving his slippers out of the way for him, eating the peppers off his plate—he was touched by the kindness Hirano had shown him throughout those days.
Being with his side, more than he would’ve expected from living with someone who isn’t family, is comfortable.
“Hey, Hirano-san.”
“Hm?”
“You’re going home the day after the closing ceremony, huh?”
“Yeah, that’s the plan. You’re staying until next week, right? Practice matches and whatnot.”
“Yep. Besides, I also have supplementary lessons this week.”
“You’re actually gonna go? Good for you.”
To tell the truth, he’s actually a little unsure about that.
His grades aren’t exactly something to write home about, but he’d made a rebound at the end of the term, and managed not to get such crappy scores that he’d be forced to take the supplementary lessons.
If he can go, he probably should, but due to club activities he might be exempted.
After checking the prerequisites, he’d declared his plans to attend, because he foresaw putting it off until the end due to a combination of his own personality and being lulled into a false sense of security by the words “you don’t have to attend if you don’t want to”.
Up to now, he’s accepted his senpai’s help, and so far hasn’t let him down…within reason.
“Because it looks like they’ll even be able to teach me how to do the homework we got assigned for summer break. You’ve never been called to attend, have you?”
“Nope, because I take school seriously.”
“Speak for yourself…”
“Haha. You take it seriously too, I bet, and you’ll keep it up in the second semester.”
“Right. …..Um, Hirano-san.”
It’s not as if he’s about to say something weird, but his heart thuds against his chest, and for no real reason, his fists clench atop the bed.
“Hirano-san, do you have any plans for summer break yet? Like around the end of July, or the beginning of August.”
His voice is hesitant, as if he’d confessed to doing something bad.
“Nothing set in stone. Why?”
“What do you think about coming with me to the countryside?”
“Hm? You mean…me tagging along when you go visit your family?”
His questioning reply is slow and tinged with sleepiness.
He hasn’t said no yet, so Kagiura remains hopeful.
“Yeah.”
“.....Your place isn’t really that far in the countryside, is it?”
Hirano’s and Kagiura’s homes are in the same prefecture, and furthermore, they’re right above a transit station. Ignoring the distance between the station and their houses, their respective stations are a 30 minute ride from each other. They’re both familiar with the area.
“Not there, to my grandparents’ house…is that not gonna work out? It’s a huge house and there’s a ton of rooms, so it won’t be cramped, and every year my relatives end up bringing other people anyway, so you wouldn’t be out of place or anything.”
The words had spilled out of his mouth unchecked, but what he said is true. His cousins in university bring along their circle of friends, and more distant relatives with small children come to stay with someone who has a close connection with the main family, so during summer break his grandfather’s house hosts a wide variety of guests.
“.....What days are you going, Kagi-kun?”
“I’m taking the night bus on the 30th, arriving on the 31st, then I’m thinking I’ll stay two or three days and take the night bus back home.”
Up until last year, he’s come with his immediate family, so they’ve usually stayed a bit longer. But for Hirano to come along, he figures this span of time is an easier ask.
He doesn’t want to push back the dates if it can be helped.
There’s a reason it must be this timing.
If Hirano has a prior commitment with this timing in mind, Kagiura will have to give up, but—
“If your relatives give permission, it’s fine by me. I don’t have summer classes around then.”
At the readily given agreement, Kagiura quickly sits up. His phone is charging on his desk.
“Hey, you’re not trying to call them right now, are you?”
“Whaaat, I can’t?”
“You definitely can’t. Do it tomorrow. Look at the clock; it’s almost time for lights out. We’re not allowed to use phones or other devices now.”
Because Hirano himself doesn’t usually follow this policy to the letter, Kagiura immediately understands that cutting off their device time is for Kagiura’s sake.
That sort of thing is what makes him such a good person.
“Fiiine. …Good night, Hirano-san.”
“Yeah. ‘Night, Kagi-kun.”
With the click of the switch being flipped, all the lights shut off.
As the room falls to darkness, the waves of unbelievable nervousness and elation begin to ebb, and before long Kagiura falls asleep.
*****
On the first night of summer vacation, for the first time since he’d started school, Kagiura greeted the night alone.
The two-person room is spacious for one person by himself.
Thanks to the departed Hirano, who’d cleaned thoroughly while Kagiura was at school, even the air in the room had seemed different when he opened the door.
In fact, just by Hirano, who is always there before him, being gone, it feels like everything from the atmosphere to the scent of the room has changed.
Homes are living things, so without people living there they fall apart, or so Kagiura has heard.
He is also hoping that with the number of guests increasing during summer break, that countryside house with many extra rooms will become lively, just as his grandfather said.
Up until now, he hadn’t had words to put to the feeling, but now it feels like he understands what it means to start your own family after leaving your parents’ home.
It just doesn’t feel right if someone isn’t here.
And being with someone is better than being alone.
*****
After talking to his parents and grandfather, Kagiura was given permission to bring his senpai from school home without any issues.
He has yet to tell Hirano anything more than that, but it seems like today they’ll have the opportunity to talk about it.
That night, during the time when phone calls are allowed in the dorm, Kagiura tries bringing up the topic while talking with Hirano.
“By the way, Hirano-san. My relatives said that since you’re my dorm roommate and I’ve probably gotten used to you, it’d be fine for you to stay a week or even two.”
“That’s way too long. And what does ‘used to me’ even mean?”
“I don’t know, either. …..As a matter of fact, we do have guests that stay around a week.”
“I’m grateful to your relatives, but that’s a long time.”
Hirano’s voice as he stifles a laugh is lower over the phone than his natural voice. The husky sound jumps a bit; it’s the first time Kagiura’s heard this voice.
“Are you busy with summer prep courses?”
“Well, I’m finished for tonight, so not really. What about you? Doing okay?”
“Club is going really well, of course. I want to go swimming since it’s so hot, though.”
“Not that, your supplementary classes. You’re going to them and doing the assignments properly, right?”
“I’m doing them. …..There’s a range of topics designated for each day, so I’d be in trouble if I didn’t do them.”
The teacher in charge of the supplementary classes claimed that the majority of students who say they “can’t study” are simply not in the habit of sitting at their desks, rather than having a large difference in their basic academic ability.
He’s not entirely wrong, Kagiura concedes. Because, after all, every time he sits at his desk, he finds himself watching Hirano’s back as he studies or after he’s finished his homework.
If he hadn’t been observing Hirano’s day-to-day life, he probably would’ve said something like “we’re just built different” and not thought anything of it, but thanks to Hirano, he can see the difference between himself and someone who continually puts in effort each day.
“That’s for the best when you’re in your first year. You’ll get more points by reviewing the material from the first semester than by choosing units based on trend.”
Due to the large difference in their characters, Kagiura is skeptical of the theory that if he seriously worked hard, his scores would rise accordingly, but Hirano, who is always studying much more difficult subjects than Kagiura, is sparing him some effort. He has no choice but to do it.
“.....Yeah. I’ll do my best. But, you know…” Although his voice is already subdued so as not to carry into the hallway, Kagiura drops his voice even lower.
“But, what?”
“Our room feels kind of empty when you’re not here.”
When the little huff of laughter reaches his ears, he closes his eyes, unable to stand the way it tickles as if the breath had brushed him directly.
“You must be getting tired. Go to sleep already.”
He wants to protest that he’s not at the age when sleepiness makes him needy, but just as Hirano pointed out, exhaustion is beginning to weigh on him.
I want to fall asleep just like this, without hanging up.
Even though he knows that’s impossible, he almost blurted it out.
I want to see him soon.

T/N: (1) The phrase here is actually 親の実家, but this concept doesn't really translate well into English, so I figured grandparents' house conveyed the meaning best. Basically, in traditional families, the 実家 (true home) is the main house (think Akito's house in Fruits Basket) where the grandparents still live and the extended family gathers for events. This tells us 2 things: 1, that Kagiura's family's probably loaded, and 2, they're traditional, so if he and Hirano ever actually start dating (lol), we can expect some juicy family drama
(2) Full disclosure, Kagi's super cheesy/romantic line at the end is more literally "When you're not here, this room is too big and too quiet". I was going back and forth about how to write it, because I'm a stickler for accuracy, but ultimately I think what I ended up putting conveys the wistfulness and longing a little better than transliterating it would

Hirano to Kagiura light novel translation 4-3
Chapter 4: Fall.
Part 3
Prev || Next
The cultural festival is 10 days away.
The deadline for ordering materials and ingredients has passed, and they have finally reached the peak of making sign boards and interior decorations.
At this time of year alone, many students come to school on the weekends. They should hope to finish preparing by today or tomorrow after school, but they can’t take time away from club activities.
Cultural clubs also have opportunities to present their club activities, and athletic clubs have long practices throughout the year. Making the most of one’s time in the midst of all this is in line with the school’s culture of valuing independence—or so one might think, but this tight schedule is the reason why each and every one of the executive committee members’ grades are allegedly dropping.
Midterm exams themself are next month, but they’re going to cover a lot of material. The contrast with the first semester, which had two rounds of exams in a short cycle, has even Hirano letting out a sigh.
At any rate, high school is much more challenging as a whole compared to middle school. Their teachers tell them to go visit their dream schools’ open campus days and school fairs, and in the same breath warn them that their comprehension level here will reflect in their scores on the national practice exam.
Autumn tends to be a hectic time, for second years and first years alike.
“Hirano-san, apparently there’s gonna be another typhoon in our area the day after tomorrow.”
His kouhai had come home looking restless; lately his mood has been going from sunny to rainy and back again in perfect tandem with the weather report.
Even Kagiura, who has been in a rush of busyness come second semester, has taken on a certain air of dignity in Hirano’s eyes, but right now it’s like he’s a child again. It’s as if every day is just before a field trip.
“That figures, at this time of year.”
“I wonder if next weekend will be okay…” His sigh is punctuated with a dry cough, and he fishes a lozenge out of his pocket. Maybe his throat is bothering him.
“Who knows? Well, there’s a backup day in case the festival day gets rained out.”
“Was last year okay?”
A clacking sound comes from Kagiura’s mouth, as if the lozenge knocked against his teeth.
“Hmm, how was it…I don’t remember, so prob’ly nothing happened.”
“The teacher did say it’ll only be canceled in case of heavy rain, so it seems like we’ll use the space below the gym or something, but I feel like we all might not fit…”
“Oh, right. So that’s what the courtyard booths are gonna do, huh? Sorry, I dunno.”
“I gotcha. Thanks anyway!”
“Speaking of which, have you guys worked out the schedule for your shifts yet? If I’m gonna go, I might as well go when you’re gonna be there.”
“We have, but…if we’re gonna coordinate, then I want to go around the festival with you.”
“Me?”
“I know this is last-minute, so if you already have someone else to go with, I’m cool with it.”
Yeah, that’s definitely the face of someone who’d be cool with it.
His kouhai’s expression has immediately gotten pouty, and Hirano isn’t sure if he’s going to give up quickly or dig his heels in.
“Maybe in the morning, then. All the stalls that have food are gonna be pretty crowded around noon, so I wanna get something to tide me over before then. Scout out where you wanna go ahead of time. I’ll keep an eye out, too.”
“Sure!”
Hirano opens a question packet so he doesn’t disturb Kagiura, who’d sat at his desk after declaring then I’m gonna do homework until dinnertime! The pauses between the sounds of the mechanical pencil scratching haltingly over the paper are punctuated with the occasional cough.
Like raindrops dripping on a rainy day, the slow moment stretches on, until he’s almost in a trance.
When Hirano, who’s gotten a bit worried, strains to listen, it seems like Kagiura’s drinking a lot more water than normal.
That’s understandable, he thinks.
The summer heat is still going strong; this kind of weather makes you want to jump in a pool during the daytime, while the days that turn into chilly nights are growing more frequent.
Kagiura may be physically fit, but this can’t be an easy time for him, what with him bustling around for the festival executive committee and working up a sweat at morning and evening practices.
At the moment, it might just be a sore throat, but he’s the type that doesn’t know his own limits, so he needs to take care of himself before it turns into a full-on cold.
He’s probably stupidly resilient, though.

Hirano to Kagiura light novel translation 2-3
Chapter 2: Summer preparations.
Part 3
Prev || Next
T/N: (1) Oiwa is one of the Nihon san dai-kaidan (Japan’s Big Three Ghost Stories). She is said to have haunted her ex-husband after committing suicide due to his horrible treatment of her and now haunts the places she lived and the people who perform her story in theater.
(2) Yuki onna prey on travelers lost in the heavy snowstorms that blanket the Japanese Alps in winter. They have an otherworldly beauty, with long black hair and dark, piercing eyes. Their skin is ageless and as white as snow, but their bodies are as cold as ice. A mere touch is enough to give a human a deep, unshakable chill. They feed on life force, sucking it from human’s mouths with an icy breath that freezes their victims solid.
“Hirano-san! I’m home!”
“Oh, welcome back, Kagi-kun.”
After he had finished with club and returned to the dorm, there is half an hour before dinnertime.
Most of the time, when Kagiura has just come home, he’s rubbing his stomach out of hunger, but something is different today.
Maybe he bought something to eat on his way home, Hirano had thought, but he’d heard Kagiura’s stomach rumble, so he must be wrong.
Kagiura’s so hyped up, he starts prattling away as soon as he puts his bag down.
“Did your class decide what to do for the cultural festival? My class is hoping to do a yakitori stall, but because I’m the one who brought it up, I ended up on the executive committee.”
After club practices, Kagiura gives off the fresh scent of antiperspirant spray.
He tends to worry about it, but he doesn’t smell of sweat.
“For the cultural festival? My class is planning on doing a haunted house. Some of the guys are trying to go all out for it, so the budget’s gonna be pretty tricky.”
When he continues, adding ‘the costumes and tools seem elaborate, too’, Kagiura tilts his head curiously.
Although his physique is comparable to the taller members of the basketball club, there is still a certain boyishness to him when talking to him.
Even for Hirano, who is not by any measure easy to approach, his expressions have been honest from the beginning.
“.....A haunted house is an event for couples, isn’t it?”
Oh, so he thinks so, too.
I guess it’s normal for someone going through puberty, Hirano thinks when reflecting on the unexpected words. He hasn’t heard Kagiura say things like “I want a girlfriend” or “there’s someone I like” before.
Likewise, Kagiura hasn’t asked about Hirano’s relationship status either. If you’re living with someone and you’re together on a daily basis, you’d obviously know they’re not dating anyone.
“You wouldn’t expect to come with a group of friends, right? I’ve gone to one before, too, y’know.”
“.....With who?”
“Hm?”
“Who’d you go with? To last year’s cultural festival.”
In a split second, Kagiura’s casting him a sharp gaze, and Hirano is momentarily shocked into silence.
It’s not like he had a girlfriend, and he was managing a stall, so the whole time he’d been walking around he hadn’t had a partner.
There was a lot of shuffling around, everyone noncommittally inviting each other to hang out based on the timing of their shift changes, and having a few people going out to get food for everyone.
“I think it was with Sasaki and the guys in our class, but I don’t really remember.”
“Did you promise to go with anyone this year?”
“Nah. I mean, even you wouldn’t bother explicitly promising to go with your friends, right?”
“.....I wanna go around the festival with you.”
Ah, so that’s what he wanted to say, Hirano thinks, raising a brow at Kagiura’s endearing nature.
After all, it certainly isn’t likely that he’d go with someone from another grade unless he’s promised to do so.
“Yeah. Then, when we’re not on duty, do you wanna walk around together?”
“You mean it?”
“I don’t get many chances to hang out with anyone besides committee members and people in my year. Outside the dorms, I mean. It’ll be a change of pace.”
“Then, let’s get yakitori from my class’ stand, Hirano-san!”
“Oh? Sounds good, I love yakitori.”
Hirano says to himself, there wasn’t any last year, to which Kagiura smiles proudly.
And that is that.
“But, Kagi-kun, will you make it to the second round of judging? Can you be on the executive committee while in a club? Competition for food stalls is tight, so first years are kinda at a disadvantage. There’s a loophole that’ll let you make a coffee shop with drinks as the main attraction so you can still do food prep indoors.”
If their menu consists of things that can be prepared using a hot plate without causing a lot of smoke, it’s possible for them to do it in the classroom.
Although there are limitations on the breaker loads, there is much less competition than for the outdoor-use equipment, of which there is little.
“.....But, I wanna do yakitori.”
“I gotcha. Well, good luck. First step is the application review. Ask your teacher ahead of time to let you see last year’s proposals.”
“I’ll try going tomorrow, then. I guess the deadline is pretty soon after we start working on it.”
“That’s kinda fun too, isn’t it?”
The cooperation of the class and the preparation of the executive committee make all the difference to the finesse of their proposal in such a short time. Because they are starting right after final exams ended, there will be little impact on their grades.
The event, in which students use their own budgets and make plans for revenue—albeit on a small scale—is a type of initiative that they had not had until middle school.
If a kouhai he cares for is assertively working on something, he wants to give him advice, even if it is a little nagging.
“By the way, Hirano-san, what role are you playing in the haunted house?”
“That hasn’t been decided yet.”
The lie suddenly slipped out, but as it happens, he is in trouble with the track the conversation is taking.
Since the roles of the ghosts are rotated on a shift system, several people are required to wear the same costume for each role, and Hirano has been selected for the Oiwa-san team.
It’s better than Hanako-san, is how he’d compromised.
For this rotation, the majority of Hirano’s class will be wearing drag. If they do it poorly, it might end up being most of them.
The fact that many of the major ghosts are women is a big factor, but the biggest reason is that there are a few people who really want to polish their skills at special effects makeup. They had said that last year they wanted to make a horror movie, but were shot down in the majority vote.
For Hirano as a member of the Disciplinary Committee, it is convenient for him to be one of the scaremongers, so he can keep a watchful eye out for rogues who will hassle visitors in the dark.
Which is to say, on the day of, the probability that he’ll be in drag is high.
“I bet you’d look good as a yuki onna or something like that.”
“Don’t you have homework? Do it before dinner,” Hirano gives the grinning Kagiura a light shove before rising from his chair.
“Okaaay.”
“Oh, before that, shouldn’t you change your clothes?”
“Ah, I forgot.”
He’s probably being nitpicky, but in moments like this, Kagiura doesn’t look annoyed the way he’d expect him to. It makes it worth the effort of taking care of him.

T/N: (1) Japanese schools typically start summer break much later than Western schools, so that's why they had an entire semester's worth of exams before summer break and why they haven't gone home yet
“Wait, …….hm……?”
Facing his luggage, which is unusually disheveled for him, Hirano groaned.
Even as he turns the bag he’d started packing in preparation for going home inside and out, he can’t find what he’s looking for.
“Not here either, huh…”
He has not a clue where they might be, and he tilts his head at the unexpected turn of events. He’d of course checked the floor, as well as in the bed, the hallway, and even the dining hall.
He always takes them out before he goes to sleep, so there can’t possibly be that many places he could’ve left them. But unfortunately, once something becomes a habit, you stop thinking about it while you do it.
It’s probably not that he put them in a different place from normal after taking them out, but there might have been something out of the ordinary.. In fact, last night Hanzawa had suddenly come over.
Although he’d come inside after hurriedly knocking on the door, he didn’t seem to have anything in particular to do, and had been acting strangely. He had looked uncomfortable too, but—had Hirano taken them out by that point?
He can’t remember clearly.
As he recalls, Kagiura came to this space and was loafing around, saying how nice the freshly washed sheets felt. Thanks to him, they’d gotten all wrinkled, so Hirano had scolded him and made him set them straight.
Because Kagiura hadn’t put the sheets back on before bathing unlike Hirano, the mattress pad was uncovered. Hirano had made him put them on immediately afterward, saying “even so, that doesn’t mean you go invite yourself into someone else’s bed”.
Even if he tries thinking back, he can’t remember the gist of his own movements.
Both the left one and the right one are gone, so the probability that they fell out is low. The backings weren’t loose, so it’s also unlikely they got caught on something. And yet he can’t find them anywhere, a situation that has him scratching his head in frustration.
“What’s wrong? Hirano-san.”
At the sound of the voice that rang out from beside him as he spaced out, Hirano noticed his roommate for the first time since he’d returned.
“Oh, welcome home. It’s not a big deal, but I can’t find my earrings. I thought they fell somewhere around here, though.”
When he added as an afterthought that he doesn’t take them off outside, so they must be in the dorm, Kagiura crouched down to the floor.
“I’ll help you look for them.”
“Thanks, but it’s fine. I’ll find them on my own. Keep an eye out just so you don’t step on them though, okay?”
“Got it. But it’ll be a problem if you don’t find them, right?”
“Yeah, but it’s not like the piercings will close up if I don’t wear them for a day or two. That aside, Kagi-kun, I thought you said you’d be doing free practice today once you got back from dropping off your school bag. You promised your friends you’d be there, didn’t you?”
Under the blazing sun with summer vacation just around the corner, Kagiura apparently still goes on runs despite club activities having ended. He’d exclaimed as much when they’d run into each other at lunchtime.
He was probably venting the stress from the final exams. For Kagiura, unskilled at studying, he’d probably been quite run down by his poor showing on the midterms.
With the support of Hirano, for whom taking care of his kouhai was no struggle, he’d been able to get through them safely, but they were scores that he, even as a sports recommendation student, couldn’t brush off, so he had, as he put it, “studied as a hard as a student preparing for entrance exams”.
Club is on break today because the advisor, current captain, and incoming captain were at a meeting at another school. It is an act of mercy given the temperature, but for Kagiura, who’d just managed to get through exams, it is not fortuitous timing.
“Ah! …..I’m heading out.”
His head snaps up, suddenly fidgety as he remembers.
He’s energetic in spite of the heat.
As he wakes up every day with him and comes to understand his daily routines, Hirano has nothing but admiration for the overwhelming differences in their physical activity.
“See you later.”
At the sight of Kagiura rushing out the door, Hirano’s face suddenly falls.
Ever since he came here, the moment he leaves, the room feels unpleasantly silent.
No other pair in any of the other dorm rooms is a match for his relationship with his roommate, who has completely opened up to him—a fact of which Hirano is proud. He feels it all the more strongly for having been in the kouhai position himself a year ago.
There is just one more week until summer break.
It got a little too quiet.
Hirano’s family home, which houses their family of three, is seldom lively, as his father is quite reticent.
They all get along, and from his point of view as the child, they’re a happy family, but it’s a little lonely for someone who has gotten used to living in a group with age-mates.
“I didn’t think anything of it last year, though…”
Mumbling his grievances, he stands and stretches his aching back.
In his line of sight is the terry cloth blanket rolled up on his kouhai’s bed, in disarray as if to illustrate his trouble with getting up in the morning.
On the off chance that his earrings ended up here, Hirano cautiously searches the sheets before fixing them back in place, but unfortunately they are nowhere to be found. His ears were pierced with titanium earrings, the downside of which is that they’re not particularly shiny, so they’re difficult to find in situations like this.
Reluctantly, Hirano re-packs his bag and gets started on his homework. He’s preparing for the summer term prep school course. Besides that, there’s also countless practice exams.
There is not much leisure time in the summer breaks of high school second years.
It’s not like he’s spending the entire time applying for intensive courses, and he has more time to hang out and go places compared to usual, but the passage of time is most definitely changing from last year.
As long as Kagiura can graduate, he’ll probably also get into college with a sports recommendation.
His gaze going soft at the pointless supposition, Hirano begins solving the problem set.
As if he has entered an empty space cut off from the world, the cries of the cicadas outside become distant. The blood is rushing in his fingertips, and the point where they touch the shaft of his mechanical pencil feels prickly.
Preparations for the cultural festival will begin tomorrow.
In the short time before summer break, each class will work out their plan and divide up the tasks amongst themselves.
It takes a fair bit of time to determine the details of the project. If their plan does not pass through the two-step audition process of an initial document screening and a secondary interview, they will not be able to proceed with it.
That said, events must be limited in the amount of space and materials they are allotted in order to have a high application-to-acceptance ratio. In effect, one could say the classes are like food truck vendors competing with one another for curb space.
For that reason, during this period, when they take charge of the cultural festival planning committee, there are times when they’re so swamped with work that they complain that even studying for exams is easier.
The judging panel consists of representatives from each class’s planning committee, the student council, and a faculty member in charge of the event. The festival judging, which is hard on both those doing the judging and those being judged, will start this week.
Hirano’s class, 2nd year class E, has already started narrowing down their plan, and are contriving to get it past the judging as quickly as possible.
Their plan is to make a haunted house spanning two classrooms and the hallway beside them.
They will remove the door and insert a passageway, using a bigger space than one would typically imagine for a culture festival program and making it difficult to tell how often the lurking ‘ghost’ will appear. The person playing the ghost will work the distance between the entrance and exit, in order to decrease the risk that someone will find out where they’ll be ahead of time and lose interest.
Under the circumstances of blocking the corridor, it will be a one-way street, so implementation of their plan is limited to the vicinity of the staircase, and they must carefully consider emergency exit routes.
The amount of time it takes to prepare the classrooms is enormous, and on top of that they will be dressing in costume, so the amount of enthusiasm they are putting into the cultural festival is considerable.
Even Hirano, who is among the less ardent group, finds his spirits raised.
Now then, what about Kagiura?

Hirano to Kagiura light novel translation 2-2
Chapter 2: Summer preparations.
Part 2
Prev || Next
“About 1-A’s Culture Festival Program”
The bold, sloping letters were written on the blackboard by a class committee member.
The proposals, which were presented in one third of their long homeroom, continued to resemble a festival, with a haunted house, yakisoba, and target shooting. When crepes, buttered potatoes, and shaved ice were brought up, someone cried out “what is this, a date?” in a voice tinged with jealousy.
At that, jeers of “I want a girlfriend” and “must be nice to be able to bring a girl” flew around the room one after the other.
Kagiura thought that the suggestions for a program aimed at women were all off the mark. The images that single guys have of women can sometimes be out of touch with reality.
Due to the nature of all boy’s schools, the number of boys who are able to get girlfriends within one semester is very slim. This is even more so the case when one lives in a dorm and has no way to interact with girls, as is the case with Kagiura.
At the moment, he doesn’t actually want a girlfriend. In middle school, he’d dated someone for just a few months, but he couldn’t get past his nervousness, and the relationship ended on awkward terms.
They had been set up by their peers and became a couple somewhat hastily; she was cute, and Kagiura thought kindly of her, but he’d been too conscious of their relationship to really be able to open up to her.
It was probably around that time. Rather than wishing for someone he wants to spend his future with, Kagiura realized he wanted a relationship like what his parents had.
The relationship Kagiura’s parents have seems more like they’re amicable best friends than a married couple. There are no overt instances of them brimming with devoted consideration for each other, or being lovey-dovey all the time. Given that they have four kids, they’re obviously intimate, but they give one the impression that even if they’d been born the same gender, they would have naturally gotten along.
The dependability that pushes you forward if there’s a path you want to take, and the depths of your heart that make you look forward to the day you return home. A person with whom you can naturally live a gentle, bright life, without you having to try too hard or overexert yourself.
Once Kagiura had become aware that that is his ideal relationship, he’d reconsidered, and decided he didn’t want to date someone if his heart wasn’t in it.
He hadn’t been trying to carelessly date around from the beginning, but having seen that a relationship won’t necessarily go well even if he puts all his energy into it, now he’s just casually waiting around for someone to hold close.
Like his mother, who when drinking tea asks his father ‘do you want some, too?’, or his father, who on an ordinary weekday will stop on the way home and buy his mother’s favorite food.
“So then, does anybody else have anything they want to do? If not, we’ll take a majority vote on the ideas suggested just now.”
The moment the voting begins, an idea flashes through Kagiura’s mind.
“I have one! What about yakitori?”
He wasn’t sure when, but Hirano had said he liked it. He’d probably be happy if he got to eat it at the cultural festival, right?
Kagiura’s cheerful suggestion is met with assenting murmurs of ‘yakitori would be nice’.
“But wouldn’t we have to do food prep?”
“The wholesale supermarket probably sells coolers or something.”
“What should we do about a storage location?”
“It’ll be fine if we divide it up between a bunch of people, right? If they bring it in the morning it’ll defrost on its own.”
“Saucy? Salty? Or should we do both?”
“I wanna eat both…..”
Just like that, the mood has pivoted, appetites for female companionship replaced by appetites for food. High school boys are perpetually hungry. Even after eating breakfast, eating their bentos early, and going out after school to buy food, they still take extra large portions of rice at dinner.
Especially as a member of an athletic club, Kagiura is no exception to the rule, and most of his monthly allowance is eaten up by snacking.
As soon as the majority vote settled on yakitori, the teacher in charge of overseeing the decision suddenly stood up.
“The competition for food items is high to begin with, and for a yakitori stall you would have to set it up outdoors, so there will be mad grab for materials. If you don’t hash out the details, it’ll be quite the struggle. You guys should come up with a back-up plan in case your first isn’t chosen—either way, Kagiura, will you try auditioning for the cultural festival executive committee?”
He hesitates for merely a second. Regardless of whether or not he’s suited for the job, all Kagiura can think about now is Hirano’s joyful expression.
“.....I’ll do it.”
“Kagiura is busy with club activities, so it’d be best if a few more people cooperate with him,” the teacher thinks aloud upon Kagiura’s firm nod.
The one who Kagiura stares at in reaction to those words is Niibashi, who sits in the seat next to him.
Contrary to his twisted phraseology, he is brilliant and meticulous, so if they work together, they’ll be able to prevent careless mistakes and inaccuracies in communications and the documents to be submitted. Given his self-confidence, he’ll probably be good at event planning.
As far as Kagiura knows, he is a capable person, well-suited for negotiations.
“What’s that? You want me to do it? …..I guess it can’t be helped; Kagiura isn’t very good at clerical work, after all.”
Despite his mock-exasperation, Kagiura can tell from spending time with him for the past few months that he’s already looking forward to it.
In a flash, a hand shoots up from the back of the classroom.
“Sensei, how many people can be on the executive committee? If I can hold multiple positions at once I can join.”
“I’ve got some free time,” someone else says as he raises his hand.
In the end, the executive committee of four people—Kagiura as the original proposer, Niibashi as his assistant, and the others—were chosen.
Tomorrow after school is the first convocation date, which seems to be when they will explain the materials and how to fill out the application forms. All four bit their lips when they heard there would also be inspections of facilities and tools, but they are past the point of no return.
The topic of discussion moves on to the next item on the agenda. Because it was explanations of the summer break’s supplementary lessons and practice tests, Kagiura becomes more and more dispirited. Try as he might, he can’t run away from exams.
When he returns to the dorm, he’ll try consulting Hirano about it. Both about the cultural festival, and the practice tests.
Because Hirano’s such a good student, he always gives useful advice rather than just empty platitudes when Kagiura confides in him about his worries involving his club.
Speaking of which—
I wonder what Hirano-san’s class is doing, Kagiura thinks as he closes his eyes.
The image of his smiling face hovers faintly behind Kagiura’s eyelids. He wants to walk around the stalls together, delicious yakitori in hand.
In part because of the too-strong sunlight pouring in from outside, and in part due to imagining a summer festival scene, he pictures him in a yukata.

Hirano to Kagiura light novel translation 1-5
Chapter 1: The first time.
Part 5
Prev || Next
T/N: (1) "non-stop ringing of the alarm clock in the early morning" according to vol 3, Kagi sets many alarms in the morning to wake up and this is not well received by their dorm-mates lmao
(2) Chicken katsu: breaded fried chicken; yakitori: chicken skewers
He returns to the dorm straight after school and studies until dinnertime. After that, he spends the entire time at his desk, with the exception of bathtime. To Kagiura, life is an endless cycle of strain. At any rate, he finds himself overtaken by drowsiness.
Because Hirano begins helping him stretch partway through, saying ‘your body will get stiff otherwise’, he feels he might really fall asleep there. If he asks, Hirano might even let him rest his head on his lap.
In no time flat, Hirano is giving him a wake-up call.
For Hirano to rouse him from his bed after getting up first, with no prompting besides the complaints from the surrounding dorm rooms at the non-stop ringing of the alarm clock in the early morning, is really quite kind.
Having an older sister and brother as well as a younger sister, Kagiura knows that older brothers are not this soft on their younger brothers, and he knows from experience that being an older brother does not awaken in one an instinct for caring for others, either.
This is the case even though they get along with each other. That’s why the distance between him and Hirano feels even closer than with his family.
Special treatment.
He can understand the meaning of what Hanzawa pointed out in consequence with feeling it for himself. Up to and including now, there’s probably no one who has cared about him as much as Hirano has. The problem is, he can’t think of anything he can do to be helpful to Hirano.
For them to be special to each other, he can’t just accept Hirano’s kindness.
It isn’t enough just to confide in him about his troubles. But if he told him he wants Hirano to rely on him, it would just seem like a joke.
How much longer will it take before he can be someone who can lend a hand to his tolerant senpai, who seems much more than one year older?
Impatience smolders in the pit of his stomach.
Hirano Taiga is a man of abundant charm, and it’s exceedingly obvious that his kouhai in the committee idolize him.
Kagiura has no intention of selfishly telling him ‘I want you to be only my senpai’, but he’s envious that he has relationships of trust with others besides him.
“Don’t space out. Here’s a test from last year. You can solve the problem sets from the same unit, but since the basics are covered by the textbook, you should focus on reviewing the parts that will probably appear on the test based on the pattern of the questions on this one.”
When Kagiura opens his eyes, which were drifting shut without him even noticing that he’d gotten distracted, he sees the proffered collection of graded test papers.
As expected, they all have high scores. How dazzling.
“…..Got it.”
The novelty of seeing ‘first year’ along with the class name and Hirano’s full name written out manages to stave off Kagiura’s drowsiness. His student number is also written.
Hirano’s warm fingers gently brush against his as he takes the papers, and it occurs to Kagiura that Hirano must be sleepy too.
When he looks up over his shoulder at Hirano, his eyes look slightly bleary.
Maybe he was yawning.
He should have told him ‘please go ahead and sleep’.
Hirano, always early to prepare, doesn’t seem to be the type to cram at the eleventh hour, and even before midterms he hadn’t been burning the midnight oil while studying.
“Hey, sorry if I’m wrong, but…the notes you copy are all over the place, aren’t they?”
He’d hit the nail on the head, and Kagiura, the very image of health, feels his chest ache.
“Well…that might be the case for some of them.”
“What percentage?”
“Um. …..Hmmm, about 70…80 percent…?”
“Come on now.”
He could probably see the notes that were still spread all over Kagiura’s desk. Without knowing how much he’d missed, Kagiura would leave a blank space and continue writing, and then while copying notes borrowed from Niibashi after class, would omit the parts that didn’t fit in the space he left.
“Yeah…if you mark things you don’t understand while taking notes, there is another way to do it, but there are formulas missing in weird places and the shapes are half-assed, so it’ll be tough to use this as a reference.”
As expected, Kagiura goes pale at the harsh remark. It’s impossible not to be shocked when his method of tackling his studies is declared meaningless.
He had been hoping that if he could get the ratio of parts that he understands to parts that he doesn’t understand to 50/50, he could still pass despite not being good at math—
“Am I really in that much trouble?”
“Probably. Even if you look at last year’s tests, you won’t get it, because you don’t know what the questions mean.”
“…..Oh.”
“Ah, well…I mean. It might just be a hunch, but many of the questions included in past tests are standard ones that can be used as a reference for successful studying, so let’s focus on those. Forget the applied questions for now. That’s for after you get down the basics.”
Unable to utter a word besides ‘yes’, Kagiura hangs his head, and Hirano strokes it, saying ‘there, there’.
It’s almost like he’s being kept as a pet.
When he drops his head down onto Hirano’s shoulder, he scolds him, saying ‘don’t fall asleep in your chair’, but at the sound of Hirano’s yawns coming in quick succession, Kagiura grins.
The next day.
Hirano wakes Kagiura up at 6 in the morning, suggesting they study during the time normally set aside for morning practice. Kagiura had heard Hirano was also bad with mornings, but that sure didn’t seem to be the case.
I wonder if he just said that to match up with me, Kagiura thought suspiciously.
However, when he looks closely at Hirano, even through sleepy eyes Kagiura can plainly see that he’d been wrong.
His incessant yawns, as well as his eyelids suddenly drifting closed as if heavy, lend truth to his words, and Kagiura begins to feel bad.
When Hirano, dressed in wrinkled loungewear and stifling his yawns, tells him ‘get out your textbook’, Kagiura takes it out of his bag as prompted.
What’s he doing? he thinks while watching Hirano stick post-it notes in various places. As he watches him, Kagiura realizes that he’s pointing out the parts that are most likely to be asked on the exam.
“Start by reading the textbook. Here.”
He has long since gotten used to the sharp gleam of Hirano’s eyes as he fixes him with a glare, but even Kagiura freezes up at this troublesome situation.
“Yes.” He nods and focuses his attention on the chapter.
When he looks at the test papers after reading the explanations written in the book, he does indeed understand what is being asked of him. The problem is, without being able to use the textbook for the actual test, it’s unlikely that he’ll be able to fill in the answers.
“That’s why you should memorize them….”
“Yeah,” he sighs.
It would be imprudent to talk about it, so he hasn’t told anyone, but among those who received sports recommendations, he scored the most points, and so was given special treatment when entering the school.
So, to put it plainly, his grades don’t even come close. If he does poorly, he might have the worst marks of his entire grade. He won’t be able to attend school if he doesn’t recover, but he’s just not cut out for it.
His midterm exam results were all over the place. He got good scores on the special elective courses, but there were many that he didn’t do well on. At that point, the subjects that he scored below average on were in the majority.
At any rate, he had scored better in middle school.
He can’t shake the sense of impending doom.
It’s just, even though he thought he took it seriously, he couldn’t get as good results as he got from sports.
These problems must have seemed a lot easier to first year Hirano.
He maintained his concentration for just under half an hour.
Just as breakfast time at the cafeteria starts, Kagiura gets to his feet.
“I wanna go running.”
More than his empty stomach, he was impatient with the uncontrollable urge to move.
He slept until the last minute yesterday and so didn’t notice, but when he wakes up early, the deeply ingrained habit of exercising nags at him. The urge to go outside is unbearably strong, as though a switch has slipped somewhere in his body.
“You say that, but it’s raining outside.”
“It was sunny yesterday, though.”
While he complains he moves his body slightly, and he can see Hirano stretch as well.
“Rain or shine, you’re still gonna have to study for your tests, so just be patient. There’s no shortcut or anything…it’s the same with basketball, right?”
Kagiura considers the sincerity of Hirano’s voice as he admonishes him.
At least for Kagiura, his whole body was jumpy and his heart throbbed even before the first time he ever picked up a basketball. While watching athletes play, he could understand how to move the same way.
Kagiura was born with a strong command of his muscles, but he had been unable to narrow down exactly which sport he was best suited to until then. The moment he discovered basketball, he knew exactly what it was he should be doing with himself.
And when he stepped onto a court for himself, when someone extolled praise upon him, saying ‘you’ll be an amazing athlete once you refine your accuracy’, Kagiura’s taste was drawn to basketball. When harsh practices piled on, he obtained a clear vision.
“I’ll do my best.”
“You got this.”
He can’t exactly say he’s encouraged.
But this is probably how studying goes for Hirano. It is easier for him to find the path he should take, and know how to go about reaching it.
If that’s the case, Kagiura wants to try to find a path that isn’t a roundabout way as well. It’s not fun, but it’s absolutely better than throwing in the towel.
When they resume studying, the room is filled with the pleasant sound of mechanical pencils scratching on fine paper.
The dorm has a self-study room, but Kagiura hasn’t used it yet.
Combined with the characteristics of the dorm, he can’t help but feel that the space should be used by accelerated course students—those who are waiting to take exams, too.
However, he feels like working on problems while feeling the presence of someone studying by his side helps him to concentrate.
But at precisely 6:45, his stomach rumbled audibly.
“…I wanna eat something.”
“I have some chocolate.”
Hirano’s response makes him happy.
“Meat would be good. Chicken katsu, maybe…”
After answering, Kagiura began to regret not accepting the chocolate.
Eating food besides at the cafeteria is forbidden in the dorms as a general rule. Only drinks are permitted. The snacks in his bag are for snacking on at school.
Even though Hirano was the one who told him that, here he is offering snacks!
“When it comes to chicken, I personally prefer yakitori.”
I see, so he likes yakitori. Kagiura makes a mental note as he stands from his seat. He can’t take it anymore. He wants to eat.
“Hey Hirano-san, I’ve heard that it’s easier to study on an empty stomach than a full one, but I don’t think that’s the case for me.”
“You keep bringing up food. Wanna go get breakfast?”
Hirano rubs his stomach as he changes his slippers, saying “I’m starving”.
In the cramped foyer, it seems like he might end up touching him, so Kagiura, who’d gotten caught up in Hirano’s movements, quickly withdraws his hands.
He takes a step back from Hirano’s bent form.
He thinks nothing of getting jostled by his teammates in the locker room while changing, but he has yet to reach that level of intimacy with Hirano.
At the same time, he might have overreacted.
I want to get closer to Hirano-san, so that I don’t get nervous over something like this.
Hirano’s expression is the same as always as he steps into the hallway ahead of Kagiura, with no idea of the turmoil he'd put him in.

gen question, when will you translate the hirakagi/kagihira novel chapter 2? I don't mean to pressure or sound daunting, I'm just really grateful for your translations because I love the pair sm^^
good question 😅 I actually have parts 1 and...I think 2 translated?? or I translated 1 and skimmed 2. I just need to proofread them for mistakes before I can post. Sorry for the long delay, I've just been super busy and overwhelmed all month 😩 but after the con this weekend I will hopefully have time to start working on them again!
FYI, I think from here on out im gonna try doing a reading list method where anyone who leaves any amount of tip on any of the previous parts will be signed up and I'll tag them on all future updates! I know tumblr's search functions and post visibility can be garbage sometimes so hopefully this will allow people to be notified as soon as there's an update so they don't have to keep checking my blog or wait for the updates to show up in the kagihira tags lol
