Hiraeth 'Rook' Kantor || they/them || Mourn Watch Mage

'Hiraeth Kantor, my former apprentice and assistant, deserves their place within the Watch. This venture you have placed them on may lead to certain death, Master Varric Tethras gets into more danger than any one of you know. Their actions during the War of Banners is reason for promotion, not expulsion. None of this order had the courage to face Baron Von Markham, lest he destroy us all from within -- save for Hiraeth Kantor. It is a dishonor to their family, who have served loyally to the Watch, to cut their career path short. All of you know what Elethara Kantor did. You know how important she was to the Mortalitasi, to Nevarra -- do not let your embarrassment and fractured pride lead to her grandchild's untimely death.

I decree in this, my last will and testament, that Hiraeth Kantor must remain within the Mourn Watch, and that their future will not be impeded by your asinine opinions. Should they wish to, of course. I would not blame them if they left the order entirely, but it is my hope that young Hiraeth will have a long, fruitful life in the one place that brought them comfort.

By now you know that I am not long for this world. Should I not return to my family's crypt, I leave my earthly possessions, all of my notes and research, as well as my home to Hiraeth Kantor. They are the best of us all, and were the friend I sorely needed in these last few years of my life.

I wish them well, and hope that the dead protect them on their path.

Thinking about the very real angst of Emmrich turning into a lich so late in the game and Hiraeth witnessing so much very real and traumatic deaths/violence but not wanting to step on Emmrichs toes because he's getting used to his form, and after all they cannot expect him to feel everything the same way. But they need him and it all culminates into a breakdown where Emmrich just holds them, and his glamour is solid, he's real and he's there -- he doesn't feel different either, physically there's just a damper on things and there's ways around that. And they just cling to him, talking about Taash's mother, Bellara's brother, all the awful things they witnessed in Treviso, and the terror they felt waiting for Emmrich to come back out of the sacrificial room. And when they saw Vorgoth with the bloodied sword, it made them feel sick.

He tells them that perhaps death in all of its trappings is no longer a comfort, and that's alright. Things happen and they change, he was scared in that sacrificial room -- who wouldn't be? But he feels their love for each other so much more acutely now, and he's excited for the day that they can live out their long lives in the Necropolis, together, and perhaps if things go perfectly -- Solas will join them. But he's also excited for the days to come and he's so sorry that they're going through hardships and that he was arguing with a skull for a solid week every night while Hiraeth couldn't sleep at all. And Emmrich holds them while the sob and wail, whispering how they're tired and they miss their family that are all gone away now -- lost to misunderstanding or lost to the Deep Roads (their grandmother). And that maybe they're not fit to be a Mourn Watcher, as much as they love the work, because death ISNT a comfort anymore. It happens and it has a cruel sting to it that they can't shake. Emmrich says that's alright, trauma does things to us we cannot explain properly, but that doesn't mean they're not fit to be a Mourn Watcher. It means they're human, and they can help those that have been wronged in death, both living and undead. When they're ready of course.

He reassures them that he loves them, that Hiraeth can always pull him aside, no matter how stubborn he gets. Even if things are a little strange and they have to get used to a few things, it'll work out in the end. It always does. And then he kisses them, with his very solid glamour that still tastes like him, still feels warm and soft like him. And Hiraeth cries some more, asks to lay down with him, try to sleep maybe. They tell him they love him, in any form, and they do. No ifs ands or buts. He can always pull them aside and ask for anything he needs too, after all they're practically an old married couple now. That makes him laugh. And Emmrichs skin is still warm, even if they can't feel his heart beat anymore.

They'll get used to the funerary jars sitting at the top of the staircase, and the pain will ease with every passing day. He is still Emmrich, and they may have their moments, but they both have each other. In life and in death.

"Thank you! For staying alive." - It might have seemed like such a silly thing to thank someone for, and yet it meant all the world to her.

I am ever-so-loosely imagining Ahru's timeline to be something like "Pandaemonium wraps up before Myths of the Realm does" and MSQ happens after both, but we'll see how things shake out.

Either way, finally getting one technically? Ancient friend who sticks around is a big win in her book, and she would have kicked herself if she hadn't made it clear just how happy she was that he decided to stick around.

omfg. yall sukuna's starting to grow on me in a more personal/deep sense, like the more i see explanations about him, his words and his character, the more i grow curious, attentive, attracted. gege really knows what hes doing holy shit.
