found this other LIFE article about the Short Creek raid that is a fascinating read!
Tumblr media
The Lonely Men of Short Creek They await trial as result of polygamy uproar
For men used to having as many as five women and 21 children around the house it was a lonely situation for the men of Short Creek, Ariz. Stolidly they ate a breakfast of oatmeal and fried eggs (above). They were still too stunned to comprehend what had happened. The Short Creekers are a "fundamentalist" heretical splinter of the Mormon Church, who live underneath vaulting red cliffs--the Towers of Tumurru,--in one of the most inaccessible parts of the US, 150 miles from the nearest railroad. They believe "in all the doctrines and covenants of Joseph Smith," including communal living and the famous 132nd section sanctioning polygamy, which the orthodox Mormon Church renounced in 1890. But last July the sovereign state of Arizona in the person of 200 state troopers--five troopers per Short Creek man--descended on the colony.
Without making a direct charge of polygamy, the troopers arrested the men on charges of conspiracy to violate a host of laws from statutory rape to misappropriation of school funds. Governor Howard Pyle accused the community of being "unalterably dedicated to the wicked theory that every maturing girl child (usually before she reached the age of 15) should be forced into multiple wifehood with men of all ages." While the Short Creek men were in jail, the state packed nearly all of the town's 85 women and 250 children 450 miles away to Phoenix. Then the 36 men were released on bail pending hearings on Sept. 28.
The men walked from behind bars into their lonely town. Heaviest of their burdens was the state's disclosure of its intention not merely to wipe out the community but to place the children as state welfare charges in suitable Mormon homes. The men's religion forbids them to show anger, but one finally burst out, "what we are worried about is that we are never going to see our children again."

Legal questions, an elder's grave, an empty schoolhouse
Eighty-four-year-old Joseph Smith Jessop, named for the founder of the Mormon Church, was in a way a symbol of the small cooperative colonies believing in polygamy which have cropped up persistently in the Southwest despite efforts to stamp them out. He had 22 children between the ages of 64 and 4, 112 grandchildren and 147 great-grandchildren. As an elder of Short Creek's "United Effort" community, Patriarch Jessop helped direct the pooling and division of all earnings from the communally owned sawmill, dairy herd, cannery, 2500 acres of crop land and $35,000 in farm equipment. The shock of the arrest was too much for the staunch old Mormon. A month after the raid, heartbroken, he died and his huge family gathered around to do him honor.
In proceeding against the rest of the men of Short Creek, Arizona faced a tricky legal problem. Since the Short Creekers avoided civil marriage ceremonies, it is difficult to convict them of polygamy. The state therefore devised the plan of charging the Short Creekers with numerous other violations, for which the prosecution will demand heavy fines with the design of bankrupting the colony. Its investigators are collecting evidence, they say, to prove many women were reluctant participants in plural unions--for example, that one girl of 17 was almost forced to marry a 70-year-old. But the Short Creekers deny these charges and are preparing to defend themselves on constitutional grounds. One of them, a University of Utah graduate, says "The Bill of Rights says we can worship God as we please. My religion is not abridging the rights of others. Whose is the next religion that is going to become unpopular?"
Tumblr media
Death of a patriarch added to Short Creek's sadness.
Joseph Smith Jessop, a founder of the colony, posed with youngest child Mabel Ann, 4, after release from jail. He said then, "This will probably be my last picture." A week later he died. Last week 101 members of his immediate family attended his funeral (center) and his sons dug his grave. At the funeral a son, Virgil Jessop, gave the eulogy: "this man has left nothing of his worldly worth, but he has left far more than most people of God's work. There isn't another man in the US that can boast this man's posterity…Grandpa has received a martyr's crown."

How best do you deal with divorce?
How best do you deal with divorce?
First, know that the way you experience a divorce is completely unique to you and your situation. There are no right or wrong ways to deal with this kind of life-altering event, but there are some questions that you might want to ask yourself in order to prevent any potential issues.
Arrangements
For instance, if there are children involved, how do you plan to tell them about the change in living arrangements? How will you handle holidays and visits? Will one parent have more visitation time than the other? These are all things that need to be thought about and carefully considered. If possible, it's best to work out any disagreements with your spouse before the divorce is finalized so that you can focus on healing after the fact.
If you happen to be the one who instigates the divorce proceedings
you may find yourself dealing with a lot of guilt in addition to your feelings of sadness and loneliness. You may feel like you're competing with your ex for the kids' affection or have an overall sense of not being good enough or being unworthy of love.
Going through divorce
These kinds of feelings can lead to depression if left untended, which may make it hard for some people to get through their divorce peacefully and as smoothly as they might have liked.
Children involved in a divorce
Divorce is hard enough on the people who are going through it, but when there are children involved, the situation can be even more delicate. Children need stability and love in their lives, and divorce can come with a lot of changes that can make achieving that stability and love a little bit harder. No matter what your age or situation is, though, you deserve to be happy.

Somehow, I stumbled on 2 sexy-themed homes this morning. This one has an interesting background. It was a Polygamous church that got involved in Food Stamp Fraud. But, it's fairly cheap for a compound- the 1975 bldg. in Hildale, UT has 19bds, 13ba, and is a low $849K (Usually compounds are in the millions).
Tumblr media
So, let's take a look. Maybe it can be turned into a mansion. It took 14 yrs. to settle the case and finally evict them from the property.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh, okay, this is nice. Balconies, a marble fireplace and built-in shelving.
Tumblr media
It's very roomy and they left it nice and clean. I'm thinking that maybe the carpeted area is a dining room?
Tumblr media
Wow, look at the size of the stove.
Tumblr media
Two sinks and an industrial dishwasher.
Tumblr media
Two huge commercial fridges. This is a nice wall, but it's across from the fridges. Maybe it's a small kitchen dining space?
Tumblr media
Then, in the next room, there's a triple commercial sink, fridge, and door to a terrace.
Tumblr media
A carpeted room off the front entrance.
Tumblr media
Large room with a sink. They must have had this place custom built.
Tumblr media
One of the baths. A simple 3pc. All 13 baths are similar- basic and utilitarian.
Tumblr media
Now, also off the main room is a hallway where someone painted a mural.
Tumblr media
Looks like an odd bedroom.
Tumblr media
What in the world is this?
Tumblr media
These stairs look kind of hidden.
Tumblr media
A bedroom? The bed goes between the cabinets?
Tumblr media
Sunny room with a door to the patio.
Tumblr media
This place is huge. Why does it have these little steps in some rooms?
Tumblr media
Bedroom with en-suite.
Tumblr media
Stairs to another level.
Tumblr media
Upstairs over the main room. This is so spacious.
Tumblr media
The rounded bedrooms with access to the terrace are the nicest.
Tumblr media
This carpeted room has a nice built-in.
Tumblr media
Clothing storage is a simple closet w/o doors.
Tumblr media
One of the rooms in the front - a nice round window with a view of the mountains.
Tumblr media
More bedrooms on the 3rd fl.
Tumblr media
It's a large property .93 acre, so it's almost an acre.
Tumblr media
I wonder who would buy it? It appears to have been empty since 2019.

Hilda ja Juulia
san. Paula Raitanen säv. trad.
Kaksi oli suloista lasta samass' kylässä kasvanutta Oli toinen heistä nimeltään Hilda toinen puolestaan ol' Juulia
He yhdessä leikkivät aina ja kerran he vannoivat niin Et parhaankaan riiarin kanssa eivät suostuisi he naimisiin
Nyt Hilda ja Juulia illoin pitkin raittia astelevat Kylän poikaset, tyttäret silloin kaikki tanssimaan kokoontuvat
Pojat tahtovat kaunista Hildaa jokainen vuorollaan tanssittaa Mutta yksikään heistä ei koskaan häntä kotiinsa saatella saa
Vaan Juulia syrjässä istuu katseen kaihoisan tansseihin luo Vain Lehtolan veijari-Ville hälle iltaisin seuraansa suo
Vaan miksi on ilmeesi synkkä?
Pian Juulia lukea saakin Hildan lempeän vastauksen: Oi Juulia, Juulia rakkain sulle kaunoja kanna mä en

You know what, if you want to counter cults, you’re going to have to research and educate.
Here is how to properly edit the original post, to make it educational. Make your post into a link to the article in the screenshot. (Find the article by typing it into google.) The Twitter addition needs to be removed entirely.
The Twitter addition does not add onto the conversation, and in fact, it detracts from it, in the way that playing a “game of telephone” confuses a message.
The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints (FLDS) and the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints (LDS), are two DIFFERENT institutions of religious abuse, that share one origin.
Why does this matter? Well, if you ever want to be able to offer your best chance at helping people who are victims of these groups, you need to actually know what’s going on. Telling people that Mormons at large practice polygamy is just making people less educated, not more educated. Telling people that “Mormons practice polygamy!” simply isn’t true, because the average Mormon you’ll meet (and maybe keep in mind that THEY don’t necessarily like the term Mormon?) definitely does not do that. They’ll think you don’t know what you’re talking about when it comes to their church- serving to strengthen their convictions.
Glossary of Mormonism
First, I urge you all to take the time to educate yourselves on your own. This isn’t going to be a complete guide, but, I want to try and define things in a way that specifically clears up the misconception you might get from reading this post.
LDS movement- umbrella term for various groups that branched out from each other. They all started with Joseph Smith, and there were various schisms. The history of any and all religion is all about the schisms. But I digress. I’m not even going to talk about all the possible Mormons today! I don’t know anything about whatever Community of Christ is, so, I don’t want to speak to that until I know what I’m saying, but, same origin.
Mormon- generally this is what we call them, not what they call themselves.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS)-This is the big formal official Mormon church. The biggest of all the groups that trace their origins to Joseph Smith. How big is this group? Well, that really depends on who you ask, because the church inflates these statistics. The last figures I can find that are actually likely to be accurate are from 2005, so, the world’s demographics have probably shifted some in the last 20 years, but they put the figure of active members at 4 million. If you run into a Mormon who’s trying to recruit, I believe this would be the kind you’d encounter. They distinctly do NOT practice polygamy. You could potentially encounter them anywhere in the world, especially because they do recruiting missions. (Remember- the point of these isn’t really to recruit you, it’s to show these young men that the outside world will reject them if they try to leave, so, don’t hear them out about Mormonism, but be kind to them, for fucks sake.)
The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints (FLDS)- This is the group of Mormons that DO practice polygamy. I highly recommend the book “Escape” by Caroline Jessop. (I read it in high school, when I was in Milford Connecticut, for convention, to hear The Truth preached and gather with The Friends from Thursday-Sunday, and it helped me put a piece of my own puzzle into place, that, while my circumstances were nowhere near as brutal as hers, something was wrong. Anyway.) This is a much smaller group of Mormons. Hildale in Utah and Colorado City in Arizona make up the border community of Short Creek, where the FLDS was centered and remains. The article “A real estate boom transforms a community with a polygamist past” puts the number of members at nine thousand.
Both these groups are institutions of spiritual abuse, they are not the same group, don’t conflate them.

Just got back from a trip to St. George
We left Friday morning for my sister's fiancé's two sisters' double bridal shower (one is getting married in May and the other in June - my sister changed her date to August 31st btw)
They lived in Colorado City, Arizona (and we also have some family down there)
After the shower we drove to St. George to stay at my aunt and uncle's (love those two and my cousins) because we like them better than any of the family we have down in the Colorado City area lol
On Saturday we drove to the Colorado City, Centennial, Hildale, Cane Beds area again to see my future brother-in-law, some friends and family down there, and also my big sister (aka my cousin who lives in St. George) had a boyfriend in Centennial so we got to see him (we also stopped in Hurricane on our way to say hi to my aunt who lives there)
Then we went back to St. George, had some dinner and had a good night
Today my sister and one of my cousins went to Sunday school with my sister's fiancé and then also went to see his choir performance while I visited with a friend in Cane Beds that I haven't seen in forever
We headed back to St. George, dropped off my cousin, packed our stuff, and headed home
We got here about 8:30
All in all, it was a pretty good trip minus my panic attack on Friday night 😆
Boy, is it good to be home 😄
