I saw a reel yesterday that was like "top 10 hikes in Canada" and they were, as predicted, 100% mountain hikes in Banff and Jasper National Parks (and not even hidden gems! The ones on tourist brochures!). Someone made a comment like "you need to see more of Canada" and the 🌟influencer🌟 replied that the rest of Canada wasn't worth visiting when there are views like that in Banff.
Anyway here's a phone photo from a hike I drove four hours round trip to do in a part of Canada that "isn't worth visiting" 😂
#the prairies are criminally underrated#and even if you want to skip the prairies#there are countless coastal trails and greay lakes trails and sand dunes and badlands#canyons and massive rivers and the granite mountains in ontario and quebec#i resented moving from calgary for YEARS because of comments like thay from people i knew irl#imagine how much more i wouldve internalized that if i was seeing it from influencers too#beloathed#anyway i hiked 14km 700m elevation yesterday (saturday of a long weekend perfect weather) and saw zero peoplr or dogs#rory got to be offleash the entire hike car to car#i saw hundreds of birds hundreds of thousands of wildflowers and got to walk the rolling hills under a sky thay goes forever#if you live in canada and want a hike recommedation hmu#there are so many good trails and good views and good hikes to be had if you simply open your heart to landcapes that arent mountains

Welcome home, baby boy 🥹🫶🏻
Today I became a dad of two again and I’m filled with so much joy I can’t believe this became a reality 😭
Fantti is a 4,5 year old German shepherd who was matched to me by my dear friend. Fantti needed a home and I have both that and all the love in the world to give him ❤️
The best part is that both me and Aino have known Fantti for some time now, so bringing him home was super easy; it was like we come home together every day, so familiar and mundane. He’s such a good and well behaved boy I’m so proud of him and I’m also very proud of Aino for being such a good sport and accepting him to her home right away. 🥹
I can’t wait for all the adventures we’ll share together— you came into my life just the right time and this feels like it was meant to be. Life has been extremely rough and depressing for a long time, but now I feel like we three are gonna be alright ❤️
#I’m watching them eat right now and I am almost in tears#they’re amazing together#I’m eternally grateful for my friend for this opportunity ❤️#she’s brought all these dogs into my life and made my life richer than I could’ve ever dreamed of#it felt so good and refreshing to have a glimpse of the life I used to have and I got to return to my old hiking paths and everything#saw ten more familiar dogs and got to spend time with them all#I think I’ll cry I feel so happy#pets enrich your life in so many ways#they’re pure gold#gosh i love them#vee talks#vee is in love#aino the dog#fantti the dog#he got his own tag!!!!#🥹

IMPORTANT QUESTION.
#if your secret third option is ''bring the dog'' a) i don't think they will allow him on amtrak and b) he hates hiking. so much.#''swan is your dog not a border collie'' yes and he was born to work a desk job. many have said he would excel in middle management#[through gritted teeth] ghost i love you more than life itself and would throw myself into a pit of spikes to spare you a moment's pain#but right now you are standing between mummy and her calochortus. so let's work that out real quick#welcome to the hotel calochortus

Ryker has shown some aversion to water, including puddles and creeks and what not. Which doesn't fit our outdoorsy lifestyle.
If he never likes swimming he will never have to do dock diving or swimming for fun, but for the sake of safety and being able to follow us on hikes and backpacking trips he has to be willing to cross creeks and confidently swim if he ever falls into water.
So today we did some fun splashing around and some not so fun creek crossings. Luckily he gained confidence fast and started stepping into the water on his own after a bit.
Only needed one learning moment of 'yes you have to cross the creek' at a creek crossing that had some deeper moving water. Let him take his time thinking about it but encouraged him that he had to eventually choose to join me and Aayla on the other side.
#the water moving across the road was a great step before we got to the creek#he had no issue with that other than rushing with a few high steps at first before he relaxed and walked normal#the deeper creek was harder and I could tell he thought i was going to drag him right in#which i didnt yet i didnt leave him any other option othwr than to cross#but let him think and analyze and choose to cross on his own#sometimes life has to be 'yes you have to do this' but there is the option to give enough grace to say 'but you can do it in your own way'#dogblr#dog#ryker#aayla#australian shepherd#adventure dog#hiking dog

here's a pet peeve of mine: editing gear and leashes out of a dog portrait etc or w/e is great and valid and all but i also think showing dogs with appropriate equipment is i-would-go-as-far-as-to-say important. especially re: blog/instagram/slice of life style content. imo it endorses responsible ownership.
i think maybe especially now that more people (in norway at least) are getting dogs or getting into dogs without prior experience. normalizing and showing properly and responsibly managed dogs living enriched, fulfilling lives etc etc. stop skewing the perception of how normal/common it is for dogs to be safely/appropriately off leash in open access areas.
#stop editing gear out of your hiking pics especially (kissy face)#like i dont think anyones consciously going to go 'oh they do it so i can too'#but when over half the dogs you see on SoMe are offleash/gearless it gives a p skewed idea of what#it means to properly and safely own and manage a dog without posing a risk to people pets or wildlife#Even When you are outside of leash season in places with good overview and a well trained dog there should be a backup to your backup#if only to signal to other people that you *are* in control and managing your dog#also whats the point of owning a brand name harness if youre not shoving it in ppls faces like COMEON

Hey Agility Folks
Question - how do you keep your pants up when running?
I wear workout leggings of various quality but find they inevitably start sliding down when I run. This even happens with ones that have a draw string waist. At this point I am seriously considering suspenders.
Would love thoughts from others.
#dogblr#dog agility#my instructor told me akc is considering getting rid of the table#and my first thought was#when will i hike my pants up then?#which is silly#but also this is real question#please tell me your pants mastering secrets

tbh i do feel like a lot of sport dog or general dog people's confusion regarding why certain gear not made for specific sports does not work for that said sport comes from a general lack of people who do not have a lot of personal experience wearing sport equipment or doing sports themselves.
Obviously people not having that experience is not a bad thing, we all learn and grow and it's great imo that people want to do active things with their dogs (any little bit you do is positive in my eyes). But it's just a fact to me that when you, personally, have experience with how YOU feel in different type of sports equipment, that knowledge certainly transfers to animal sports as well.
#dogblr#dog gear#this message brought to you by your former emo jock darkwood.....#so many shoe fittings to not feel pain#so much tailoring things to each individual need#can you imagine if i tried to do gymnastics in hiking boots. or even run track in hiking boots#that's what a lot of people are essentially asking of their dogs#and btw when we talk about modular 'all in one' dog equipment it's like#the gear equivalent of 3 in 1 mens shampoo#it works alright#and it's better than not having correct gear#but it's not going to work as well as the gear specialized for that sport#would you bring a field hockey stick to an ice hockey game? absolutely fucking not#when i say i am a sports coach to my dogs i mean it lol#i'm here to make sure they can perform the best they can#and take them out of the game if they need it so they don't overrun their limits#to help stretch them and keep them supple and healthy#and give them snacks. lots of snacks.

kind of just sounds like you hate dogs. leash laws don't apply to beaches either btw
Not getting into the dregs of this argument again for real but
A) i love dogs they are very cute and funny and sweet creatures. i don't love when their owners think it's a Me problem when i don't want their 100 pound hunting dog jumping on me on sight.
B) you're right, leash laws don't apply to beaches! Because (in the USA at least) most beaches have laws banning pets from being brought entirely. So your dog shouldn't even be there let alone unleashed
#anonymous#answered#im not having this fight again for real either keep your dog on a leash in public or accept that u are being an ass to everyone around u#yes this applies to hiking trails. yes this applies to parks. yes this applies to public transit. yes this applies to itty bitty dogs#i do not know your dog. what do you think i am going to do if your german shepherd comes running at me on a walking trail be honest.#keep your dog on a leash it costs you literally nothing

#ive lost like all fear of dogs at this point. i realized that earlier today when a massive rottie started a fight with my boy#and my first instinct on seeing flying teeth was to sprint towards them and shove my body in between#its very possible it was also just all self preservation leaving my body because i am absolutely going to protect my pup#i would probably fight a bear for him there is no question that i would forcibly shove another dog off with my forearm#but fuck. despite the fact that i /know/ better sometimes i have a real real bad fatigue week and i use dog parks. i have like.#a selective list of ones that i will go to categorized by 'least likely to become a boxing ring'. tons of space. multiple separate areas.#i go only at off times when its not busy! i watch dog body language and keep an eye on him at all times.#ill rotate areas if i spot a potential problem. i have him under verbal control and wouldnt even be there if i didnt. but! like!#despite all that. just fucking anyone can go there. 'oh your dogs a puppy thats why my dog attacked him!' idgaf.#speaking as someone who has raised a reactive dog. if your dog is reactive why in the absolute hell would you take them to a dog park.#why!!! lif your dog is consistently fighting other dogs why would you do that! it does not matter if he 'only attacks dogs that arent fixed'#he is still obviously not having a good fucking time and is not going to enjoy this environment holy shit#just. gggHHGGH. i avoid off leash parks as much as i can already but. fuck. idek the point of this im just.#still a bit riled over having to physically throw myself in the middle of a dog fight while the other owner did absolutely nothing.#like just hovered! while his dog was pinning mine and teeth flying attacking and was actively fighting me trying to keep him off#when i can afford it im gonna find some sort of dog group walk/hike thing instead i do not want to socialize my boy like this#i am tired and very very upset because my boy looked so scared and i swear to god if you arent grabbing your dog i will fight it myself#fuck dude. fuck dog parks and fuck me for knowing better and still using em anyways.

a sprained ankle is the worst for me both because I love a good walk and hate laying down and had plans to go hiking this week but alsooo because dog grooming requires way more pressure on your ankles than youd expect
#so much. squatting. lifting.#and supporting a dogs weight#putting it into your legs to avoid damaging your back only goes. so far#anyways#the hike was for WHALE WATCHING. BTW. mad foreverrr

The bestest girl. With a new pup in the house Aayla has been learning to share me and my time. There is a pit in my stomach of guilt that she doesn't get the same amount of one on one attention but she doesn't seem to be stressed or worried about it except for some FOMO when I'm training Ryker.
I still make sure she gets her individual training and attention. I do take time to put Ryker away so she can have her time. Yet still there is something of sadness when the only dog, my heart dog has to learn to share as I shape the new one into a respectable member of society.
She is everything to me still and mostly a fantastic role model. (Stop teaching the puppy to chase the cat...)
#luckily she gets a lot of sympathy rewards#since im dishing.out treats constantly for ryker as he requires constant leave its and drop its and rewardong for disenagegments#aayla is look at me like youre just handing out food constantly to the puppy what about me?#and i give in#because she is very good#and getting older so she can just get free rewards#australian shepherd#dogblr#aayla#dog#aussie#adventure dog#hiking dog

Hello, I was just wondering if you could share more about the kind of training and preparation you did with your girls at home/on shorter walks to get them ready for long hikes. And out of curiosity, what were the traits you looked for in potential breeds/puppies to suit long hikes? 💜
Oof, I wish I had a good and technical system to present here, but the truth is that we live in a rural part of Norway where nothing is flat unless it was dug out and the asphalt cracks so fast the main roads count as mild terrain, so a lot of it just comes with the territory.
From early on I've pretty much just tried to let them learn and grow as naturally as possible and to not limit them too much, and all of our puppies have been active and come on short hikes since they were ~3 months old. Not like heavy, static, structured activity - but little off-trail mountain or forest treks focused on play and exploration. Shaping the dog I want from the start, basically.
Our activity levels fluctuate with the season and weather, so we only do really long hikes in the summer and early autumn. But it's not unusual to spend 3-4hrs going mostly uphill on a regular walk, so doubling that for a hike isn't that big of an ask as long as they're healthy and in good base condition. And once hiking season starts rolling around in June after eight months of snow/sleet/rain, I'm usually in worse shape than my dogs anyway lol. I know my dogs well and we start the season with a few warmup hikes, to see where we're all at.
As far as breeds go, idk. I just tend to like a relatively neutral, balanced build. I'm not personally into very large or heavy dogs. I appreciate a little athleticism. I want less prey drive and more handler orientation. The ideal dog for me is one that maybe doesn't Have To, but Can and Wants To. Over the years I've also learned that I like a little moderation in body and angulation, and I prefer a slightly careful dog over an overconfident one.
#i hope this ramble answers maybe one of your questions#the overconfidence esp is a thing for me#i understand that a lot of ppl want a dog that throws itself into anything no questions asked - but not in an uncontrolled environment#and melis is adding another factor to that now where#shes SO sure of herself and confident she really feels NO urge to check in w us at all. getting none of that for free w this one#i take a lot of pride in my dogs being in good condition so thats also a thing that ties into this - i try to keep them lean and muscled#one time a friend picked up Sparta and went: :O Holy Shit! and ive been chasing that high ever since#and finally#for me hiking isnt so much about Going Places its just#being. existing. vibing.#being near and with ur dog. having fun with them and being kind to them and getting to know ourselves and each other#not in relation to other people or places just as is/are/am.#it doesnt really matter if we reach a summit or whatever. as long as we come back in the same pieces as we left in it was successful

it will never not drive me absolutely mad how anti-dog the outdoor community is. And no I will not be elaborating on this take, if you’re left feeling that I am somehow a irresponsible recreator than so fucking be it
#Dogs are literally purpose bred to be outside#They belong outside just as much if not more than humans#If you can not be responsible for your dog then that’s a you thing#And no I’m not talking about breaking leash or wilderness dog laws#And yes I do pack out all the dog shit#If you disagree with dogs backpacking or thru hiking than we have very little to discuss here#I don’t care how shit granola girlies might think this take is#Fucking die mad about it
