there's a direct parallel that's acknowledged in canon about ginhiji's situations in the joui war and the farewell shinsengumi arcs but their situations have key differences

gintoki talks abt the impossible "choice" he was given - neither "choice" being in any way favorable. and ultimately by "choosing" he says he lost both his precious things - his friend and his sensei

the main thing that is different is the trust & support that sogo has for hijikata and his leadership. despite all the bad blood between them - he still cares for, or at the very least, respects hijikata enough to wait for him to make the call on what to do. sogo could have easily rebelled against the bakufu without hijikata but it's a matter of principle and a matter of trust

and idk man there's something to be said about hijikata & okito not falling into the gintaka trap despite the circumstances easily calling for it ... mainly because of their reciprocated trust in each other + mutual love for their taishou

and i (admittedly) have not watched further and can't speak/dissect takasugi as readily, it's still very interesting to think that ultimately he loved shoyo more than he loved gintoki. whereas gintoki, despite everything, loved shoyo's teachings & his friends more. this isn't to throw stones at either character but merely the tragedy of their relationship..

The Kazama & Mishima’s naming traditions and the Next Gens of Kazama’s children!

Alright so I've been cooking this for a while since they dropped Jun's parents name on T8. Bear in mind, I'm in no way fluent in Japanese nor I'm a native, but I have google on my side to educate me better about Japanese naming systems and the kanji they used for naming the child (jinmeiyo and joyo).

I just want to named XiaoJin’s future babies so bad, kay?! Lol. Even though I know Jin is opposed to any plan of continuing the lineage (which is heartbreaking 😭💔) but the XiaoJin's shipper in me cannot be extinguished!! 🔥🔥🔥 I still want to named them! Lol.

So...

Tekken 8 has finally dropped some lore about Kazama family, and it's about Jun to be exact. There, we can get a glimpse of Jun's parent name:

Soon after, a Japanese KazuJun's fan dropped this tweet :

Assuming a native Japanese able to decipher those characters correctly, now we finally have Jun's parents name kanji:

純一 the father, and 恵 the mother.

As we all know, kanji has several way of reading. Cited from pon-navi, there are two typical ways of reading kanji, kun-yomi and on-yomi. In addition, there is a reading system called "jinmei kun" which is used only for names.

"Soo?? What's their name?! How do we know the correct reading?!"

Here's the thing!!

Tekken has giving us hints that Mishima family has a tradition to give their children with their kanji name, following a common practice in Japan. Let's take a look at their kanji.

仁八, Jinpachi

平八, Heihachi & 一美, Kazumi

一八, Kazuya

Notice the similarities? You’re right! The Mishima child inherited their parents' kanji! The sons inherit '八' kanji, with Heihachi inherited '八' from Jinpachi and Kazuya inherited both kanji from Heihachi (八) and Kazumi (一).

As it is a common practice, the same can be said with the Kazama family! Although in their case, they might not be inheriting the kanji but instead with the reading of the said character. Or maybe phonetically similar would be correct here.

For example, this is Jun's kanji: 準

This character '準' can be read several ways, some of them are : Jun, shun, setsu, taira, toshi, narau, nori, hitoshi.

And one of her father kanji is: 純

'純' can be read as : kito, Jun, atsu, atsushi, aya, itaru, ito, kiyoshi, sunao, sumi, tsuna, to, makoto, yoshi.

Have you noticed it? That's right! '純' and '準' can be both read as Jun! It means that Jun's kanji has the same reading as her father's kanji, although they have different kanji characters.

From here, we can assume that Jun's father can be called Jun____ as well.

As for the other kanji, '一' can be read as: hito, hitotsu, hajime, ichi, itsu, i, osamu, kuni, susumu, tada, chi, nobu, hajimu, hajime, hi, hiji, hide, hitoshi, makoto, masashi, moto, ka, kazu, kata, atsu.

Looking from the lists, together his name could be read most plausibly as : Junichi, Junitsu, or Juni. Imo, Junichi sounds the best, so yeah, I completely agree with the KazuJun's fan.

Now we all know that Kazama has similar sounding name with different kanji.

On the other hand, the mother has '恵' that can be read as: megumu, megumi, kei, e, aya, sato, satoshi, shige, toshi, yasu, yoshi.

While it could be anything, I think it's either Megumi or Megumu. Why? Because I found out that '恵' has the same reading as one of Jin's kanji reading! lol. Let's take a look at Jin's kanji!

This is Jin's kanji: 仁

It can be read as: Jin, ni, nin, kimi, kimu, sato, sane, shinobu, tadashi, to, toyo, nobu, nori, hisashi, hito, hitoshi, hiroshi, masa, masashi, mi, megumi, megumu, yasushi, yoshi.

Do you find it? Both '恵' and '仁' can be read as Megumi/Megumu! lol.

One of the speculation is that Jun named her son Jin as a sign of respect to her father in law, Jinpachi (仁八). Even though Jin is a Mishima by blood, he doesn't inherit the '八' character as he was raised in Kazama family. So he inherited just the '仁' character. Besides, it also sounds almost the same. Jun.. Jin.. It's phonetically similar, right? And if Jin were born a girl, I bet he would be called Megumi/Megumu instead just like his grandmother, lol.

Thus, we can safely conclude that the Mishima has the habit to inherit their kanji characters while the Kazama inherit the reading of their kanji's name.

What about the future Kazama kids?! Let’s move on to that and do the real cooking here for the XiaoJin's babies name! :D

We have seen Jin's kanji, but what about Xiayou?? Xiaoyu is Chinese by birth, and her hanzi (Chinese characters) are 凌曉雨 and リン・シャオユウ is how it's written in Japanese katakana.

凌, Líng: surpass / リン (Rin)

曉, Xiao: dawn / シャオ (Shao)

雨, Yu: rain / ユウ (Yu)

Now, I'd like to think that they would combine or use either their character or its reading for their baby! Also! They might use some of Jin's family name's characters :D

Here are some of my ideas for the babies name :

For boy:

晨一, Shinichi, a portmanteau of Jin and Xiaoyu's nickname and kanji inherited from Junichi/Kazuya.

Explanation: the first kanji '晨' means Dawn, which has the same meaning as Xiaoyu hanzi '曉'. The kanji reading is also the combination of Xiaoyu's nickname and Jin. Shao+Jin=Shin. It also sounds similar. Jin, Shin, it's rhyming, right? Just like Jun and Jin!

For the second kanji '一' I'd like to think the story behind it was that Xiaoyu wanted to preserve Kazama/Mishima naming practice but Jin was reluctant to do it. In the end, they decided to take the kanji '一' which was present in both Kazama and Mishima, that's in Junichi (純一) and Kazuya (一八).

For girl :

凌, Shino, a portmanteau of Xiaoyu's nickname and Jin, same character as Xiao’s hanzi that could also be the feminine ver. of Shin.

Explanation: it’s rather simple, I use the same character in Xiaoyu’s hanzi that has different reading while also the combination of Jin and Xiaoyu’s name. In Chinese ‘凌’ read as Ling but in Japanese, ‘凌’ has several reading. One of them is Shino. Shino could be the sister or the twin sister of Shinichi, in case XiaoJin have two child or twins in the future :)

琳, Rin, a kanji that has the same reading as Xiaoyu’s name and phonetically similar with Jin.

Explanation: I think this one is easy to understand! Rin and Jin, phonetically similar like what Kazama would've named their children. It’s also Xiaoyu’s surname in Japanese. The kanji ‘琳’ itself means ‘beautiful jewel’ and in Chinese the hanzi means 'beautiful jade’, and it reminds them of the greens in Yakushima forest, Jin's home.

Spent most of the day making new outfits for the chuns.

It’s festival season. In fact, my town is having its biggest festival this weekend, and I don’t really feel like going. But it doesn’t hurt to make the chuns some new yukata just in case I change my mind.

The plan was to give the Gintoki chun a strawberry obi to match Hiji-chun’s mayo yellow. The light-colored fabric was too sheer on its own. I picked a blue fabric as the underlayer… and the end result clashed with the pink/red strawberry obi.

been thinking about the soul switch arc and how klara and reina would react to it so here we go:

klara ➡️ hiji!gin: she can be rather observant in spite of her ditzy behavior, so she knows something is up when she walks into the building and sees "gin" with his slicked back hair, stern expression and kiseru in his hand. his strange mannerisms isn't helping either ("huh? he designed a code of conduct for odd jobs?"). so she asks to speak to him in private, sitting across from him with a serious expression, and at that moment hiji!gin is thinking that the gig™ is up, she somehow found out.

but no, klara proceeds to fail her perception check and starts giving him a speech about how he shouldn't feel pressured to change his entire personality and that she--erm, everyone likes gin-san just the way he is even if he's kinda dumb at times etc. hiji!gin is just sitting there entire time, awkwardly nodding along (how is he even supposed to react to this? these words are obviously not meant for him) and thinking how he just dodged a fucking bullet. side note: she definitely almost gives him a heart attack when her invisibility kicks in and mistakes her for a ghost.

reina ➡️ gin!hiji: he's just lazing around in the shinsengumi compound only to suddenly get a text message from reina asking if hes on his way.

gin!hiji: what. reina: (˘ŏ_ŏ) um...weren't we going to watch the alien vs yakuza remake today? did you get swamped with work again?

he stares down at the phone as his two brain cells struggle to work ("oiii, is that mayo bastard actually dating that waitress? naaah, that's impossible. he didn't even say anything about this. yeah, this is probably prank call.")

so he just replies with a single sentence:

"sorry but you got the wrong number."

reina never texts him back and legit thinks hiji changed his number.

*holds up mic 🎤* hey astoria!! this is super random but i just read your recent posts and it made me curious about something; are there any differences/interesting things about sougo's portrayal in jpn vs eng fandoms? or is about the same?

okay this got long (as per usual) BUT the TLDR is i think sougo is seen as a lot more of a pretty boy in the jpn fandom and a lot more of a "dom" in the eng fandom. it's probably either due to what archetypes we are more familiar with/connect him to, or just how fanon spreads in different languages!

okay so first funny story/disclaimer— during my time living abroad my friends kept trying to get me into ginta.ma and i didn't until i got back to the states. but now every time i say "god i wish i had a sougo figure :/" my bf says "should've gotten into it sooner :/"

so that being said i didn't really interact with the irl gint.ama jpn fandom, but i always think of this story my bf told me where he was shopping for hiji merch and a girl next to him audibly gasped and gently, tenderly picked up a sougo badge. she gets me. more on that later.

anyway, a character like sougo is interesting bc i feel like every person has their own interpretation of his traits, but this is what i've gathered from what i have interacted with online and through doujins/fan comics (gross generalization ahead):

i think often in the eng fandom he is portrayed a lot more with his "do-s side", and i think a lot of interpretations i come across have him as pretty mean/aggressive (obviously he has his moments, but they're usually just mischievous and opportunistic (and 90% of the time directed at hiji)). in short, he's mostly written like this:

from what i've consumed from the jpn fandom, he's depicted a lot more as his "flat" self. i feel like what's more exaggerated is the "uncaring" attitude. (i wonder if it's because that's what his speaking style conveys, but that exaggeration is lost to an english audience?) i see him written more like this:

and obviously both interpretations are rooted in canon! that's why i was able to have screenshots of both attitudes he shows! but it's interesting with a character like sougo seeing what aspects people choose to focus on :) ofc this is, as i said, a generalization, and based on my limited personal experience with both sides of the fandom, but it's what i see most popular in those languages!

i brought up that example earlier of the other sougo fan who tenderly picked up the badge because i feel like a lot of sougo fans over here aren't as interested in those "gentle" aspects of him. all x readers i have found have been people who desire him for his do-s/dom traits (which is fine if that's what they're interested in!), but i'd say more sougo fans in the jpn fandom find him cute/moe.

(i think it's also interesting that sougo was written to be the bishounen/androgynous character, but i don't hear much about him being a "pretty boy" in the eng fandom. this is an interesting case since usually EA men are feminized in western fandoms, and in this case it's the opposite, but i won't get into that (i just wrote about it for my graduate thesis so i have thoughts on it LOL))

Like I said, it's a weird au lol. Very skewed circumstances.

Aside from this, I do have a Sougo/Hijikata Takasugi/Hijikata story idea I haven't written yet.... and then also just thoughts on Takasugi and HIjikata being smoking buddies haha. Just kinda chillin with each other in some moments.

It is really such a shame Hiji and Sugi didn't cross paths in canon! I would've loved to see their canon interactions. But alas! I can only write my weird little fanfics lol.

The arts of them with their blades at each other's throats are really too perfect though

Juro: Once again, everything plotwise with this guy is more interesting than the guy himself, but that’s alright, he’s fine, his plot’s insane, Kurabe’s boring but that’s like half the point, but he’s nice, Izumi I am Very intrigued by, and since it’s still not Really obvious to me if there’s a clear “Who’s right vs Who’s wrong” in this game, I’m interested to know how Izumi’s whole deal unfolds, he atleast treats Kurabe pretty badly lmao

Shu: HE AND IDA EXISTS AT THE SAME TIME THEY *ARE* SEPARATE (Which the game through Shu also literally tells you, since he goes “We’re different”) Hohohoho man this guy’s story is so interesting (he’s one of the protags I’m been the slowest with progressing so now that I’m progressing him alot it’s like “Oh now This and This and This all makes sense”, really curious to know about Inaba’s deal is tho, is she too like Izumi? Who knows, either way I think Shu’s route is great, but to Me it’s more about how it puts other routes into perspectives since this is as I said a very less prioritised one for me personally, love Shu tho he’s really funny

Iori: I’ve been at 85% with her for the longest time so I feel like I know her deal... but I don’t know her deal for shit, like clearly she’s Morimura, but. What? Like I haven’t figured that out and the game hasn’t explained that yet so I’m still very ??? on her story. Love her tho I think she’s Such a nice character. She and Ei are cute, I think her Usami and Miwa are adorable. She’s nice, her route’s nice.

Ryoko: Urgh girlie you are being so manipulated. I originally thought she was gonna be the one to have the D-code key when Ogata’s route was like “You don’t have it anymore” since apparently this is all Ryoko’s fault based on her intro scene with Yuki, but clearly that wasn’t true, so I’m interested to learn about her whole “I ended the world” thing. Love her tho, feel So bad for her.

Usami: I really like her route it’s stupid interesting, and I think it was placed REALLY well for me too, perfect inbetween between “Lets me connect the dots” and “New dots I haven’t connected”. I really like her character I didn’t expect that much, and I think all her stuff with Ida is interesting. She and Ogata are also really nice together, they have a stupid fun dynamic.

Megumi: Fluffy is 100% Izumi (haven’t gotten this confirmed but with everything I know... yeah Fluffy’s Izumi), which eh definitely puts some Interesting perspective on Megumi’s route... I like her so much she’s such a desperate, flawed guy and I think her route’s really good, especially how it’s really good for putting everything into perspective really well

Yuki: Love her. Her route’s really interesting, but I feel like I don’t know enough about the black suit guys and 1985 Ida’s deal to know what’s going on there. But I think Yuki’s character is excellent and she’s always fun to play. Still very in the dark about her story though I feel.

Natsuno: Ironically enough, when I started her route I thought a lot of it was going to be “Oh this is mostly Natsuno being wrong isn’t it” and so far she seems to be the only guy who has hit the nail on the head basically immediately??? Can’t wait to see how it goes with knowing she has the kaiju control code thingy tho. She can’t catch a fucking break huh.

Miura: Love this guy!! He’s so much fun, a little less dramatic than Hiji but the exact same kind of fish out of water-ness I really love about both of them. He’s really cool. I think his route is one that reveals alot of shit really early that don’t make sense until you’ve played more, but now I’m like “Oh shit yeah ofc” due to stuff he shows really early (I’m assuming that 2188 is “the beginning”/first timeline/Sector 0 or 1). Idonno, what can I say, good character, good route.

Hijiyama: It is a crime against me personally that his route is so forced end-game, but that doesn’t stop me from loving it. It’s probably my favourite purely because of how fun I have while playing it, I think Hiji himself is amazing and his route heavily features Okino, who I also find fucking stupid funny, but in general everything that happens around Hiji is just. So funny. Even outside his route he’s just always a really funny and dramatic guy. Real ones cry everytime Hiji eats a yakisoba pan. Can’t wait until the game stops being mean and lets me continue his route. What the Fuck is Okino’s deal. (I think the game is Excellent at moral ambiguity if you can’t tell, I have no idea what’s going on but everyone’s doing their thing and everyone thinks they’re right and I think maybe everyone’s wrong actually.)

Ogata: Unexpected favourite guy And route??? I love him??? I didn’t expect this at all. Getting his route last was well worth waiting for I love him he’s so much fun. And his route is really interesting too and I Love how it works progression and narrative wise. Like insanity!!!

Ei: This guy... This fucking guy. WHAT is your deal Sekigahara. I mean I know his deal Kinda, but there’s still so much I’m like ??? on about him, but I think he’s stupid cool. He’s a serious character done very very well and I think he has some really good scenes with people. I think he’s really cool and I can’t wait to figure out his deal proper.

Gouto: ABSOLUTE BOLDASS TO GO “Well she’s under assassination threat you know” AT MIURA AS IF *HE ISN’T THE GUY WHO ORDERED EI TO KILL MORIMURA*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don’t have to explain this to anybody but I guess I just personally want to see for myself if I can put into words why I was never into Kage////Hina. I mean I feel like kghn isn’t even as popular as it could be now a days (whether because manga readers gravitate towards the new Hinata ships or the big hq ship is Iwa//////Oi and etc)

Anyway, for me, I really love great partnership and power couples but something about them felt off from what I look for in ship dynamics

I do admit that they do look good, dark hair tall Kags and small sunshine Hinata and together they make the karasuno colors. Match made in garbage dump (IM REFERENCING CROWS I DONT MEAN THEY ARE TRASH SHIP)

Maybe it’s because Kageyama isn’t the grumpy broody seme to Hinata’s bright energy as I expected. Like yeah he’s still grumpy and all but he’s also an idiot and I love him for it. Also as they grow together, Hinata isn’t really scared of him anymore. (Of course Hina just is the type to make jabs and then go on defense when they retaliate) I think even though season 1 was fun, I didn’t love the characters until season 2, when Hinata finally starts wanting to learn to stand on his own.

The way the monster duo were framed in season 1 was never really a bad thing, how Kags was the Oni and Hina was the weapon, they always framed it as A Powerful Duo. I guess maybe that wasn’t the dynamic I was into because I much rather liked Hinata fighting back and wanting to stand on his own. In hindsight it kind of feels like he’s breaking away from a controlling relationship, which sounds horrible for Kags but that’s kinda what it looks like.

I also kind of equate them to the hot headed stubborn type of ships (Hiji////Gin) where they are different in personality but are also super similar. Not exactly the right analogy, but since the monster duo both love ball and playing, they vibe that way but personality wise they are opposites.

Also getting more into the series, I vibe more with Kags being in the AroAce spectrum. While yes do I ship KageGuchi, I still prefer AroAce Kags. I guess it also just feels like I can’t see Hinata taking care of Kags the same way I would with any other Kags ship. (Not in a sexual way) Taking care in a way where he’s looking out for him? can’t really explain but since Hinata and Kags are always Ball On the Brain 24/7, they both need someone who are a more level headed and know when to stop.

I mean I wasn’t into TskHn from s1 either even though the sunmoon dynamics have been there from the start. Perhaps I just didn’t vibe with the charas as much until later. Anyway, season 2 training camp is peak, growth for Hinata and Tsuki backstory and everyone else of course.

Can I request a scenario where Gintoki and Hijikata (or just Hijikata if two is too much) have to deal with a jealous s/o after she see them get too friendly with another female?

Toshirou could feel a pair of eyes burning a hole behind his head, years of training reveal to be more useful than in combat only.

The real question that had a grip on his mind is; why you, his wonderful partner, looks like you are ready to kill him.

Too bad Toshi is a dumbass and it doesn’t matter how much you sigh, grunt, or throw…is that a pan?? Toshirou really can’t understand what is going on.

Imagine his face when you admitted that, yes, you were in fact jealous of that girl.

A face you wanted to punch so hard, the idiot looked so happy and he is also making a shit work to hide his amusement.
