The rest of Backroads and independent travel near Anchorage
I have been putting off writing this post. Hoping for more interesting material I guess.
The Backroads trip was generally rainy. Sometimes light, sometimes more, and generally cloudy and damp. So not terribly exciting, or good for photography. In addition, Cathie was very optimistic about her ability to do the walks. In general, one mile of walking on pretty flat ground was enough to do her in for the day. It also typically took an hour. So she wasn't really walking with the group, as the "short walks" were more like 3 to 5 miles. So I needed to decide whether to support Cathie and do something with her, or walk with the group and leave her behind by herself.
I went on the walk to Exit Glacier. There were two options, the "Toe of the Glacier." and an upper-level viewpoint. It was explained that the trail to the upper level was steep and muddy with switchbacks that were very steep and slick in the corners. I had done that on the last glacier hike and it wasn't fun so I went with the Toe. Most people made the same decision and the three that went for the upper option came back only having gone a third of the way.
So here's the view from the Toe viewpoint.
Tumblr media
I pointed out that the Toe had receded out of view and we were looking at the ankle.
When everyone was there I did take a loose group photo.
Tumblr media
As you can see it was another damp day, but not heavy rain.
Our last night we went to dinner at the house of a woman that runs a place for weddings and other events. It was a very Alaskan place: woodsy and folksy. But the food was good and it had a lot more character than most restaurants.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our last night was at the Alyeska ski resort. A very nice hotel, but pretty dead out of season. With little else to do, I took the tram to the top of the ski area. Overpriced in the summer at $39 (with a discount). But some good views.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see the views of the mountains were clear, but still oppressive skies.
My plan was to spend an extra week in the Anchorage area where we could pick things Cathie was able to do. But there's really not much in the Anchorage area that fits that bill.
Just up the valley from us is the Eagle River Nature Center. They pointed out a short one-mile loop and we did that. There was a moose in the water just up-stream, which was nice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought that if we stopped for lunch Cathie should be able to do the local small botanical garden, but it became clear that would be too much, so we called it a day.
The next day we went to Reflection Lake which has a one-mile flat trail. My thought was we would do that little walk and then drive around and sight-see a bit. But that was also too much.
But it was a nice walk around the lake, with views and reflections in the water.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I took Cathie back to the Guesthouse and headed back out for the afternoon.
I headed up Highway 1 to the east of town through a section labeled "Glacier." There was one glacier in the distance, but really not worth the several hours of driving.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next morning we went back to the botanic garden. It's pretty small with one 3/4 mile loop. But some nice flower gardens.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then back to the apartment before dinner. The apartment was another strategic error. It's up the Eargle River Valley about a half hour out of town, so every extra trip out there was an extra hour of driving.
Then we discussed our situation and decided we weren't getting that much out of our stay here, so we should go home a few days early. I checked with American and determined we could get a flight 3 days early and save $78 there. Then canceled the last three nights in the guesthouse and got a $400 refund, plus fewer days on the rental car and fewer meals here in Anchorage (where the food is very expensive.)
So we went for it and will head back to Madison tomorrow night.
It hasn't been a terrible trip, but not exciting either. We did come to a better understanding of Cathie's ability to travel and I've been changing future travel plans accordingly, so that was a good thing!

day 39 - 44
My dreams were very sporadic and unpredictable in the way I remembered them.
I asked Chat GPT to write this description yall
Last night's dream was a real rollercoaster. So, I'm hanging out with NCT Dream, right? But then things take a really weird turn. We end up in this bizarre bathroom having this seriously creepy conversation about sacrificing people. It was like they were part of some kind of cult or something, lowkey demonic vibes, you know? Anyway, I had to make a quick exit with my family, and suddenly we're in this bustling shopping center where everyone's giving me these strange looks. Next thing I know, we're on this crazy highway trying to score concert tickets. That's when this security guard dude pops up and, weirdly enough, seems to have a thing for me. He even gives me his ticket, which was risky considering his job. We race to the venue in this packed van, my parents stressing about being late, even though I still couldn't figure out why the concert was such a big deal. Oh, and before all that, I had to pitch design ideas to a bunch of big shots. Talk about pressure! The dream ends at a mall with this Comic Con-type event, leaving me totally confused about the whole thing.
Day 40
I had this dream I was friends with JoJo Siwa but then apparently it was a whole scandal that we were friends?!!! (irl I wouldn’t appreciate being friends with her) But yeah everyone hated us together for some reason.
Day 44
- Dreamt I had a gorgeous dress teal shimmery on and went to a burger place and a aquarium where this girl who went to my school took photos of me
- People were wondering why I had this dress on especially in a burger place that was super greasy.
- I was on a road trip with my cousin, our pet husky (which I don’t have irl) and my parents
- My cousin brought along a hello kitty edition Nintendo ds which I still want oh my soul it was gorgeous and it had like so so many games
- This dream was just weird but aren’t all my dreams??

Typhoons of the air forces of Germany and Spain jointly execute NATO eAP mission
The mission included nine Eurofighters, operated by 60 military personnel from the Spanish Air Force and 140 from the German Air Force.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 09/16/2022 - 15:00in Military
Eurofighter Typhoon detachments of the German and Spanish Air Forces jointly carried out NATO's Advanced Air Policing (eAP) mission for the first time.
Conducted as part of a 'plug-and-fight' concept, the mission involved the integration of the 140 military personnel of the German detachment along with about 60 military personnel of the Spanish Air Force, at the Ämari Air Base in Estonia.
Together, the German-Spanish forces operated a total of nine Eurofighter aircraft.
During the eAP operation, the NATO Combined Air Operations Center (CAOC) in Uedem, Germany, ordered the launch of the fighters.
Tumblr media

The Eurofighters, each of the German and Spanish Air Forces, then carried out a combined surtida to identify and escort a non-NATO aircraft above the Baltic region.
The commander of the Spanish Detachment, Miguel Ángel López García, said: "With these combined alert missions, we have achieved great success as a result of teamwork and thanks to the interoperability of our advanced weapons system.
Tumblr media
"Shared maintenance reduced the logistics footprint, employing less personnel and material for each country for this type of operation, halving the costs of Eurofighters if the two countries worked separately."
This mission also marked the first time that the German Air Force, a Eurofighter user nation, provided smaller spare parts, as well as guided missiles, weapons and ammunition for weapons on board the Spanish aircraft.
Tumblr media
In addition, German tankers also provided fuel to Spanish force aircraft.
A detailed case-by-case analysis was carried out at times when replacement, support or instant exchange was not possible, as both nations use different versions of the Eurofighter.
The three weeks of this combined flight mission allowed the forces to increase cooperation and interoperability.

Juniper publishers-Activity Pattern of Brocket Deer (Genus Mazama) in the Atlantic Forest
Tumblr media
Abstract
This study aimed to describe the activity pattern of Mazama spp. in an Atlantic Forest remnant in southeastern Brazil, and to test whether the sampling design can affect the recorded patterns. Data from 4 sampling periods were analyzed (June 2005 to February 2010), using different sampling designs, and these included camera trapping installed along internal unpaved roads or in the forest interior. The records of Mazama spp. were collected throughout the day, with no periods of inactivity, similarly to the results from other regions in South America, but differently from a previous study developed in the same sampled area. There was variation in the distribution of records throughout the day when the sampling periods/designs were compared, but the activity patterns were not statistically different when compared the 2 types of habitat sampled (internal roads and forest interior). Sampling design affect the activity pattern recorded for Mazama spp., which may be related to behavioral differences in response to spatial variations in habitat on a local/regional scale. We recommended the combined use of different sampling designs to better describe the activity pattern of species in camera trap studies, reinforcing that the risk of sample bias should be weighed during the study design.
Keywords: Artiodactyla, Camera trap, Cervidae, Circadian rhythm, Detectability, Mazama americana, Mazama gouazoubira.

Introduction
The time of day in which a species is active is an expression of its circadian rhythm. This consists of approximately 24-h intervals associated with the light-dark cycle and is responsible for the regulation of biological processes [1]. Biological rhythmicity is extremely important because it promotes an internal temporal organization in the physiology and behavior of living beings, and it enables them to synchronize with the external environment to anticipate and prepare for periodic environmental changes [2,3].
The methods used in studies on activity pattern include camera traps. However, despite the increasing use of this equipment in natural history studies of various taxa [4-6], differences related to sampling design, combined with differences in habitat use and species behavior, can affect the records obtained by this sampling method [7].
Brocket deer in the genus Mazama (Rafinesque, 1817) have a complex evolutionary pattern, and the genus is represented by morphologically similar Neotropical species grouped in 2 main clades: the red brocket group and the gray brocket group [8]. These deer occur from southern Mexico to northern Argentina, including practically the entire Brazilian territory [9]. They are morphologically adapted to forest habitats, although they are also found in different vegetation types throughout their distribution, as such as Cerrado (the Brazilian Savanna), Caatinga (xeric shrubland and thorn forest) and open field formations, as well as capoeiras (secondary-growth forests in initial stages of regeneration) [9]. There are 4 species of Mazama recognized for the Brazilian Atlantic Forest [10]. Mazama americana (Erxleben, 1777) and Mazama gouazoubira (G. Fischer, 1814), which represent respectively the red and gray groups [8], are sympatric in the southeast of the country.
Studies on activity pattern of M. americana and M. gouazoubira are still scarce (if considering the wide geographic distribution of these species), and in some cases, the available data are conflicting [4,11-16]. It is thus necessary to investigate the discrepancies between studies to better define the activity patterns of these taxa, and to determine the environmental factors that may influence the time of day in which Mazama spp. are active, as well as check the sampling factors that may affect the collection of records used in studies on activity patterns.
The objective of the present study was to describe the activity pattern of Mazama spp. in an Atlantic Forest remnant in southeastern Brazil, and to test whether the camera trap sampling design can affect the recorded patterns.

Materials and Methods
Study Area
The study was conducted at Reserva Natural Vale (RNV, Vale Natural Reserve: 19°06’ - 19°18’ S and 39°45’ - 40°19’ W), which is located between the municipalities of Linhares and Jaguaré, in the north of the state of Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil (Figure 1). The RNV has an area of 22,711 ha and is adjacent to the Reserva Biológica de Sooretama (RBS, Sooretama Biological Reserve - 27,860 ha). Together with other 2 private reserves (Recanto das Antas Private Natural Heritage Reserve – 2,212 ha, and Mutum Preto Private Natural Heritage Reserve - 379 ha), the RNV and RBS form a practically continuous block of native vegetation (Linhares-Sooretama Block – more than 53,000 ha) that represents approximately 11% of the current forested area in the state of Espírito Santo (based on data available in [17]). The Linhares-Sooretama Block is intersected by BR-101 Highway in the southwest/northeast direction.
The RNV is composed by a mosaic of habitats, most of which are covered by dense lowland forest (Tabuleiro forest) as well as areas with less dense forest on sandy soils (Mussununga) and occasional native grassland [18]. The forest vegetation in the RNV is classified as perennial seasonal forest [18]. The topography of the RNV is practically flat with tabular hills that vary in altitude between 28 and 65 m [18]. The climate in the region is tropical with dry winters, i.e., type Aw according to the Köppen classification system [19]. The mean annual temperature is 24.3 °C, and the mean annual rainfall is 1,215 ± 260 mm [20]. The RNV has an internal network of unpaved roads (Figure 1), which are approximately 4 m wide and total 126 km in length, allowing access to all parts of the reserve [18].
Data Collection
Data were collected during approximately 48 months of sampling, which were distributed in 4 distinct sampling periods using camera traps: Jun/2005 to Jun/2006 (Period 1), Jun/2006 to Aug/2007 (Period 2), Aug/2007 to Oct/2008 (Period 3), and Jun/2009 to Feb/2010 (Period 4). CamTrakker game cameras (CamTrak South Inc., USA) were used in the first sampling period; and Tigrinus cameras (conventional model; Tigrinus Equipamentos para Pesquisa, Brazil) were used in the other 3 periods
Each sample period represented a distinct sample design, as described below. In the first and fourth periods, the camera traps were installed along internal unpaved roads; and in the second and third periods, the equipment were installed out of roads, in the interior of the forest (at 100-200 m, and 500 m from the nearest internal road, respectively; Figure 1). In the first period, 30 sampling stations were selected that were distributed in the north, south, and west subareas of the reserve (10 stations in each subarea), and data were collected in the dry and rainy seasons (2 consecutive months in each season/subarea). In Period 2, 10 different sampling stations distributed throughout the entire RNV were sampled. The same was done for Period 3. In Period 4, 8 sampling stations were selected in the north subarea.
The camera traps were operated for 24 hours/day, and the equipment was set to stamp the date and the time of the record at each photograph. The solar time was used for the time of day throughout the entire sampling period. The interval between consecutive photos was set to 20 seconds. The camera traps were fixed on tree trunks approximately 45 cm above the ground, and checked every 30 days for cleaning, battery replacement and to collect the photographic records. No bait was used to attract specimens.
Assuming Limitations on the Identification of Mazama Species
At first, we selected good quality photographic records of Mazama spp. to confirm the identification of the species present in the RNV. The photographs were sent to the Cervidae Research and Conservation Center (Núcleo de Pesquisa e Conservação de Cervídeos - NUPECE, from Universidade Estadual Paulista - UNESP) for identification by cervid specialists (José Maurício Barbanti Duarte and Márcio Leite de Oliveira). A total of 56 photographic records were selected. Of these, 6 were identified as M. americana; 4 as M. gouazoubira; 39 were identified as from gray clade, but apparently different from M. gouazoubira; 3 were identified as from red clade, but apparently different from M. americana; 2 were classified as potential hybrids; and 2 did not receive any identification (clade or species level). According to Duarte et al. [8], the morphological similarity between the taxa has caused numerous errors in the identification of Mazama spp., and external morphometry by itself has low power in species discrimination. Thus, given the difficulty in identifying the species from most of the photographic records, even by specialist researchers, and the existence of many doubtful records, we chose to keep the data analysis at the genus level.
Data Analysis
To avoid double counting of records in the same capture event, only the first record of Mazama spp. was considered valid when there was more than one photo of the genus within a period of 1 hour at each sampling station (= independent record; [7]). To compare the number of independent records obtained in each sampling period/design according to differences in the effective sampling effort, the capture success of Mazama spp. in each sampling period was calculated by dividing the number of valid records by the sampling effort and multiplying the result by 100 [7, 21]. The sampling effort was calculated by multiplying the number of camera traps by the number of effective sampling days (the total time between the first and last records in each sampling period, considering all sampling stations) [21].
Because the clade represents the main predictor of the activity in the genus Mazama (see Discussion for details), we classified the records into records obtained at night (18:00h-05:59h) and in the daytime period (06:00h-17:59h).
To describe the activity pattern, the independent records of Mazama spp. were grouped into 1-hour intervals for a total of 24 daily intervals. The overall data (grouping of all records), the data from each sampling period/design, and the data from each type of habitat sampled (internal roads - grouping of Periods 1 and 4; and forest interior - grouping of Periods 2 and 3) were considered. The Mardia-Watson-Wheeler test was used to assess whether there were differences in the daily distribution pattern of Mazama app. records. This test considers the time of each photographic record (independent inputs) and, based on the grouping of the data to be compared, draws random samples to determine whether the circular distribution of the data is identical to that of the original samples [22]. Initially, the 4 sample periods/designs were compared simultaneously (multisample) and then pairs of periods were compared with each other and with the overall pattern (pairwise). The same test was used to compare the types of habitat sampled (pairwise). The analyses were conducted using the program Oriana (version 4.0; [22]) and the level of significance was 5% (p-value < 0.05).
To represent the activity pattern graphically, rose diagrams and line graphs were used. To prepare the line graphs, 1-hour intervals and the percentage of records obtained in each interval were considered. Percentages were used so that any differences related to the absolute number of records did not affect the visual comparison of the activity patterns recorded. The activity peak was defined when the percentage of captures in any given hour was 50% greater than the hour with the greatest percent of captures [23].
Go to
Results
A total of 1,029 independent records of Mazama spp. were obtained during the study period, and the records were differently distributed among the sampling periods/designs. The Period 3 had the highest capture success, followed by Period 2 (Table 1). About 74.1% of all records were obtained in the daytime period, and the highest proportion of records in this period was also observed when considering each sampling period separately (69.6 to 90.9%; Table 1).
Activity Pattern of Genus Mazama
Records of Mazama spp. were obtained throughout the day (24 hours, with no periods of inactivity), and the genus was more active between 05:00h and 18:00h (Figure 2). There was a first peak in activity early in the morning, which extends until midafternoon, between 05:00h h and 15:00 h, and a second peak late, at 17:00-18:00 h, in the evening (Table 2; Figure 2).
Comparison of Activity Pattern Between Sampling Periods/Designs
Considering the overall pattern and each sampling period/ design separately, the activity pattern of Mazama spp. varied in relation to the hours with the highest activity and/or the number of activity peaks during the day (Table 2). The daily distribution pattern of Mazama spp. records differed significantly between the sampling periods/designs (W = 22.957, P < 0.001). The pairwise comparisons revealed significant differences between overall × Period 2, overall × Period 4, Period 2 × Period 3, Period 2 × Period 4, and Period 3 × Period 4 (Table 3; Figure 3).
Unpaved Road X Forest Interior Comparison
When the sampled habitats were analyzed separately, the proportion of records associated with the first and second activity peaks differed, with the first peak being more expressive for unpaved roads, and the second peak for forest interior (Figures 4 and 5). However, the daily distribution pattern of Mazama spp. records was similar between internal unpaved roads and the forest interior (W = 3.011; P = 0.222).

Discussion
The genus Mazama was active over the entire 24 hours, with more intense activity during the day, comprising a crepusculardiurnal pattern in the RNV. Mazama activity over 24 hours, considering either a single species or the combined records of 2 sympatric species (one from the red clade and another from the gray clade) has also been observed in Ecuador [4], Peru [16], Bolivia [13,15], Argentina [11], and Brazil (Amazon, Pantanal, and Atlantic Forest; [14]), but these results differ from those of Ferreguetti et al. [12] based on data also collected in the RNV.
From the comparison of the results of previous studies performed with M. americana and M. gouazoubira, we observe that there are peculiarities in the activity time for the same species of brocket deer between sites (intraspecific variations), and the differences are related to the hours of more intense activity and occasional periods of inactivity. These variations may be attributed to differences in the photoperiod between the sampled sites, which varies with latitude [5]; local effect of altitude associated with topography on the incidence of solar rays inside the vegetation at each study area [23]; differences in the ambient temperature between regions [6, 23]; local variations in the response to competition between Mazama spp. [15]; the size of the studied remnants [6]; or changes in the activity pattern in response to the presence of hunters [6]. Blake et al. [4] obtained records of M. americana during the day and night and found an activity peak in the early morning and another in the late afternoon. Di Bitetti et al. [11] and Gómez [13] observed a similar pattern, although the first activity peak occurred at the end of the night, and the species was less active during the hottest hours of the day. Rivero et al. [15] recorded more intense activity between sunset and sunrise and no records in the early afternoon. Tobler et al. [16] obtained more records in the late afternoon and throughout the night, with no records in the hottest hours of the day. In Brazil, Oliveira et al. [14] recorded more intense activity of M. americana at night, especially before sunrise, in the Amazon, and attained a greater number of records after sunset and during the night, in the Atlantic Forest. Ferreguetti et al. [12], also in Atlantic Forest, obtained records of M. americana only at night, with more intense activity after midnight. For M. gouazoubira, Blake et al. [4] found greater activity during the day until sunset and inactivity at night. Rivero et al. [15] and Tobler et al. [16] obtained records over 24 h, with more intense activity in the early morning [15] or throughout the diurnal period [16]. In the Brazilian Pantanal, Oliveira et al. [14] recorded more intense activity of M. gouazoubira early in the morning and late at afternoon. In the Atlantic Forest, Ferreguetti et al. [12] recorded the species only during the day, with activity peak early in the morning and in the hottest hours of the day.
Ferreguetti et al. [12] classified M. americana as nocturnal and M. gouazoubira as diurnal, with temporal segregation between the 2 species, and 2 periods during the day with no records of the genus (from 04:00h to 06:00h, and 17:00h to 20:00h). Although the species were not differentiated in the present study, the gaps in records noted by Ferreguetti et al. [12] were not observed, highlighting that some of the activity peaks recorded here overlap the times without records in the previous study. In addition, according to few records identified by cervid specialists (see Materials and Methods for details), we recorded M. americana at 17:21h, 18:20h, 18:52h, 22:31h, 00:05h and 02:10h (some of which correspond to the second gap identified by Ferreguetti et al. [12]) while M. gouazoubira was recorded by us at 08:08h, 08:29h, 09:36h and 14:52h in the RNV. The gaps recorded by Ferreguetti et al. [12] also contrast with the observed in other locations for the genus Mazama [4, 11,13-16]. The differences in the activity pattern of M. americana and M. gouazoubira (interspecific variations) seem to be related to an effect of phylogeny, and the clade represents the main predictor of the activity of the species, with the red clade being more nocturnal and the gray clade more diurnal [14]. If this pattern is also observed in the RNV, it is probable that our dataset gathers a larger number of records of M. gouazoubira, the local representative of the gray clade. This observation applies to overall data, to the data from each sampling period/design and, consequently, to each habitat sampled. Ferreguetti et al. [12] also obtained a greater number of records of M. gouazoubira by camera traps and transect surveys, suggesting that this species may be more abundant in RNV than M. americana.
Although there was no difference in the activity pattern between the sampled habitats in the present study, there was difference between Periods 2 and 3, which included the forest interior dataset. By contrast, the periods in which sampling was conducted along unpaved roads did not differ. It is worth noting that there was also a difference between the pattern detected when the camera traps were only installed in the north subarea (Period 4) and when the designs included sampling throughout the entire RNV (Periods 2 and 3). These variations in activity pattern should not be related to differences in the proportion of records of the species/clades sampled, suggesting that it is related to different behavioral responses of Mazama spp. to spatial variations in habitat on a local/regional scale. In this respect, the Mazama camera trapping data may have been influenced by small differences within the same type of habitat (such as the distance to the nearest internal road) and/or regional peculiarities within the same remnant (such as among the RNV subareas) highlighting that sampling was always conducted in dense lowland forest. However, the sum of the records from Periods 2 and 3 (forest interior) diluted the local effect, resulting in a pattern like the data from Periods 1 and 4 combined (internal roads). Similarly, sampling along roads throughout the entire RNV (Period 1) reduced the regional effect (Period 4) so that the data were like those from the off-road samplings (Periods 2 and 3).
The results of the present study corroborate those of Srbek- Araujo & Chiarello [7], who indicated that sampling design affects the collection of mammal records using camera traps, reinforcing that the risk of sample bias should be weighed during study design. According to the data presented here, the sampling design may also result in different activity patterns for the same species/taxa, which may be related to behavioral differences in response to spatial variations in habitat on a local/regional scale. Once the detection rate by camera traps is determined by the level of activity of the species in a specific environment or habitat, the capture rate will be proportional to their level of activity in each place [7] and at each time of day [24]. For this reason, the integration of sample designs becomes more representative for the characterization of the general activity pattern of the species, encompassing the variation in the use of landscape components (intensity of use) and the peculiarities in the pattern of use (time of day, for example) of each element of the landscape. Indeed, the integration of sampling periods diluted the differences between sampling designs used here, highlighting that the types of habitat sampled in the present study did not significantly affect the recorded activity pattern of Mazama spp., which was similar between the internal unpaved roads and the forest interior.
Regardless of the sampling design used, none of the activity patterns observed for the genus Mazama in the present study was like the pattern reported by Ferreguetti et al. [12] for the same study area (considering the 2 species as a unit). It may be due to differences in sampling design (location of camera traps, for example), eventual inaccuracy in species identification, and/or the randomization procedure proposed by Ferreguetti et al. [12] to “correct” records that could not be identified (uncertain identification). According to the authors, when the identification was uncertain, they “randomized the unidentified records using the proportion of each species found in the total number of transect sightings and camera trap records” and “the 2 species were recorded in similar proportions in the 2 sampling procedures” [12]. This randomization procedure is based on the identified records, so it is sensitive to accuracy in species identification, which can generate biased results. In addition, unidentified records are not necessarily distributed between species in the same proportion as identified records (or between transect sightings and camera trap records), which may be influenced by the greater ease of identification of one cspecies over another, considering the quality of the photographic records (e.g. light conditions, positioning/angle of the animal, and proximity to the equipment), highlighting that the studied species are very similar physically, with subtle diagnostic morphological characters.
Go to
Conclusion
Our results confirm that the genus Mazama is active throughout 24-hour period, with no periods of inactivity, also in southeastern Brazil, similarly, to results from other regions in South America. Furthermore, we recommend the use of different sampling designs to better determine the activity pattern of the focal species in camera trap studies because details of the data collection strategies can influence the data obtained and thus affect the recorded patterns.

The Live Music Year in Review
If live music is a drug, Sound Bites is a user and abuser. But, dang, a drug never felt so good and left so little damage (read: none) as live music.
The following are excerpts from the blog’s original reviews and do not include performances at the Nelsonville Music Festival, the Outlaw Music Festival and other difficult-to-encapsulate events.
That said, it’s a fair look at an exceptional year of concertgoing and one of the many things Sound Bites is grateful for in the year that was 2019. These sound bites (lower case) are listed in order of quality; parenthetical numerals indicate the number of times the blog’s seen the act.
A+
Los Lobos (18) at Music Box Supper Club, Cleveland, Ohio, March 1 - This was a band that wanted to be exactly where it was doing exactly what it was doing. And it showed in the music and the on-stage interaction, resulting in what was likely the best of the nearly 20 Los Lobos concerts Sound Bites has experienced since the early 1990s.
Los Lobos (19) at Rose Music Center at the Heights, Huber Heights, Ohio, July 23 - Los Lobos earned multiple standing ovations, created enough energy to make the half-full shed feel like a packed arena and proved once again why on any given night, this is the best live band in America.
Brian Wilson (2) at Rose Music Center at the Heights, Huber Heights, Ohio, Aug. 13 - Wilson’s performance of Pet Sounds and Beach Boys hits wasn’t perfect, yet it was sheer perfection. The concert humanized a musical god; it celebrated of the soundtrack of a generation; and it demonstrated the healing power of music, for both Wilson and his followers.
Wheels of Soul feat. Tedeschi Trucks Band (10), Blackberry Smoke and Shovels & Rope at Rose Music Center at the Heights, Huber Heights, Ohio, July 20 - Tedeschi Trucks Band proved the existence of life after death Saturday night, as the 12-piece killed with song after song after song and the audience came back with increasing enthusiasm each time. And while there is no denying the value in this packed night of music - which ran from 7 to 11 p.m. on a steamy, Southwestern Ohio night - it was the headliners that slayed listeners time and time again.
Livingston Taylor (2) at Thirty One West, Newark, Ohio, Dec. 6 - Livingston Taylor is as well-rounded an entertainer as anyone could ever hope to see, even if his relative obscurity meant only about 80 people turned out to see him put on an outrageously entertaining Friday-night show.
Marc Cohn feat. the Blind Boys of Alabama at Rose Music Center at the Heights, Huber Heights, Ohio, June 19 - Singing with their "Hebrew buddy" Marc Cohn, the Blind Boys of Alabama provided healing salve to the blues that immediately preceded and followed their joint set at the Rose Music Center at the Heights. The unexpected combo stole the night, an evening when Robert Cray was uncharacteristically tepid in his performance.
A
Punch Brothers (4) at Southern Theatre, Columbus, Ohio, March 20 - Even by the Punch Brothers' high standards, the band's March 20 show in Columbus was exceptional and featured a setlist that spurned esoterica for pure musicianship and songcraft. The precision in their performances continues to stagger, even more than a decade in to their career, as the band zigs and zags through various stylistic landscapes, stops on any number of onstage dimes, accelerates from zero to 60 in nanoseconds and demonstrates time and time again that intricate ensemble playing is typically much more effective than even the most evocative solo.
Todd Rundgren (39) at State Theatre, Cleveland, Ohio, May 6 - By the time he closed with “Just One Victory,” fans who had given sporadic standing ovations all evening had crowded up front for a chance to slap hands with their musical hero. Rundgren obliged. But even if he hadn’t, he’d already delivered.
Hot Tuna (Acoustic) (9) at Natalie's Coal Fired Pizza and Live Music, Worthington, Ohio, Nov. 5 - Some people say going to concerts is like going to church. Sometimes that church is a pizza shop. And the preachers are occasionally a couple of former psychedelic warriors and Woodstock veterans who have always been grizzled bluesmen at their core.
Darrell Scott (3) at Natalie's Coal Fired Pizza and Live Music, Worthington, Ohio, Sept. 29 - Accompanying himself on hollow-bodied electric guitar, six-string acoustic guitar and piano, Scott previewed tracks from the four albums, including a Hank Williams tribute, he's working on - "It sounds crazy, but it's just music," he said - sung Joe South's "Games People Play” and briefly turned the restaurant into a church.
Steep Canyon Rangers (8) at Midland Theatre, Newark, Ohio, Oct. 24 - To call the show lively would be an insult to the word, as the group moved on and off stage to play in various incarnations with members moving up front to solo and backing off to give their mates their own star turns.
Circles Around the Sun at Woodlands Tavern, Columbus, Ohio, June 11 - The band whipped out a nine-song, nearly two-hour performance that whizzed by in what seemed like 45 minutes as the quartet laid down thick grooves and the audience in the tight, well-sold space stomped around gleefully in them.
Lyle Lovett (4) and His Acoustic Group at Victoria Theatre, Dayton, Ohio, Oct. 18 - No matter whom he plays - Acoustic Group, Large Band, solo or acoustic with friends like Robert Earl Keen and Shawn Colvin - Lyle Lovett is always a wise ticket.
Todd Snider (11) at Speaker Jo Ann Davidson Theatre, Columbus, Ohio, April 10 - For 90 minutes, Snider played a career-spanning set that culled songs from 1994's Songs for the Daily Planet through this year's Cash Cabin Sessions, Vol. 3 and most of his other albums as well. The crowd was small but enthusiastic, singing loudly on old songs such as "Easy Money" and listening attentively to new ones such as "Watering Flowers in the Rain" and "Just Like Overnight."
The Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams (4) Band at Jorma Kaukonen's Fur Peace Ranch, Pomeroy, Ohio, April 13 - The Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams Band can play anything. And they played most of it during a knockout, two-hour show inside the Fur Peace Station. This was one of those concerts - a show rewarded with several standing ovations from the sold-out house as Campbell and Williams - with Williams’ parents on hand - covered the Carter Family (“I Ain’t Gonna Work Tomorrow”), Johnny Cash (“Big River”), traditional songs via the Grateful Dead (“Deep Elem Blues”) and performed originals from their two duo LPs as Jorma Kaukonen joined in for most of the second set.
Joan Osborne (3) at Memorial Hall OTR, Cincinnati, Ohio, Aug. 2 - For 95 minutes, Joan Osborne and her trio played tracks from Songs of Bob Dylan. But it was Osborne, whose voice ranges from soprano cries to deep-throated, bluesy wailing to tender and cracking in a girlish way, who made them work. "Buckets of Rain" was the little girl; "Highway 61 Revisited" was the brassy blues singer. Meanwhile, "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" was a rest on a front-porch swing and "Tangled up in Blue" was a walk through a lifetime - either Dylan's or Osborne's.
Grateful Ball Featuring the Travelin’ McCourys (2) and the Jeff Austin Band at Woodlands Tavern, Columbus, Ohio, Jan. 27 - Bluegrass meets jamgrass meets psychedelic rock ‘n’ roll when the Travelin’ McCourys and the Jeff Austin Band get together for a Grateful Ball. Playing alone and together, the bands treated the sold-out bar to more than three hours of exhilarating, Sunday-night roots music that bled into early Monday morning.
Leo Kottke (5) at Thirty One West, Newark, Ohio, April 21 - Leo Kottke held the audience at in rapt silence as he demonstrated what an acoustic guitar - two, actually; a 12-string and a six-string - can sound like in the right hands. And in Kotte's hands, the guitar can sound like a bass, a dulcimer and multiple guitars all at the same time.
Dom Flemons Woodlands Tavern, Columbus, Ohio, Nov. 23 - Touring behind his Black Cowboys LP, the bespectacled Flemons looked as if he’d just walked off the ranch with a hat, suspenders holding up his blue work pants and a pocket watch on a gold chain. The former Carolina Chocolate Drop, known as "the American Songster," was the consummate entertainer and played in the style of De Ole Folks at Home-era Taj Mahal.
A-
John Oates with the Good Road Band at Victoria Theatre, Dayton, Ohio, Jan. 15 - A blind person attending this show would have spent most of the 110 minutes not realizing this was the same John Oates who is most famous for playing pop music with Daryl Hall. This was music culled mostly from the first half of the 20th century, when blues, country and jazz were still a melting pot of Americana and hadn't yet separated and led to rock 'n' roll.
Crash Test Dummies (2) at Memorial Hall OTR, Cincinnati, Ohio, Sept. 21 - On the road celebrating 25 years of God Shuffled His Feet, four of the five original band members played 10 of God's dozen tracks and offered others from 1991’s The Ghosts that Haunt Me through 2010’s Ooh La La!
Jeff Lynne's ELO at Nationwide Arena, Columbus, Ohio, July 30 - Jeff Lynne's ELO ended the show where the former Electric Light Orchestra's career began to take off, playing a rambunctious version of "Roll Over Beethoven" - replete with its quotations of the composer's famous 5th symphony found on ELO 2 - and wrapping a night full of highlights with one of the brightest of all.
Lake Street Dive (2) and the Wood Brothers (7) at Fraze Pavilion, Kettering, Ohio, June 15 - Though they’re a disparate pair, Lake Street Dive and the Wood Brothers displayed shocking congruity during sit-ins and while playing alone across their rain-soaked, co-headlining sets.
Dead & Company (8) at Rouff Home Mortgage Music Center, Noblesville, Ind., June 12 - Like a young relative you see only occasionally, Dead & Company seems grow by leaps & bounds in between its annual summer tours.
Chicago (13) at Rose Music Center at the Heights, Huber Heights, Ohio, May 5- Down to three original members in keyboardist/guitarist/vocalist Robert Lamb, trombonist James Pankow and trumpeter/vocalist Lee Loughnane, the recently expanded, 10-man Chicago recreated the original septet’s sound via standout performances by all as they focused mostly on their first decade of recorded music.
Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets at Palace Theatre, Columbus, Ohio, April 7- For 110 minutes, the former Floyd drummer and his outstanding band plumbed the early-Pink discography, plucking songs from every album (except Ummagumma) from 1967's the Piper at the Gates of Dawn to 1972's Obscured by Clouds. These weren’t covers so much as interpretations and the band gave the music enough of a contemporary nudge to keep it from sounding too dated.
It Was 50 Years Ago Today at Akron Civic Theatre, Akron, Ohio, Sept. 28 - The Fab Faux Five consisted of a Utopian (Todd Rundgren), a Monkee (Micky Dolenz) with a Badfinger (Joey Molland), a dude from Chicago (Jason Scheff) and Christopher Cross. Motley and, unbelievably, well-matched, the group was backed by a stellar four-piece band who provided essential vocal backing and played synths, keys, drums, guitars, harmonica and bass as needed. They didn’t get a break, while the stars spent little time on stage all together (now), instead coming and going to play 23 of the Beatles' 30 tracks and two solo/band songs apiece.
Bob Dylan (12) and His Band at Mershon Auditorium, Columbus, Ohio, Nov. 4 - Never one to stand still or rest on his legacy, Dylan starts futzing with songs almost as soon as he commits them to tape and continues to do so basically forever.
Chris Smither and Sierra Hull at Jorma Kaukonen's Fur Peace Ranch, Pomeroy, Ohio, Sept. 7, 2019 - Chris Smither mic'd his boots, played bottom-string-heavy, country blues on his acoustic guitar and solicited a lot of laughter. Sierra Hull played mandolin, octave mandolin and guitar and was mostly serious, eliciting a few gasps of disbelief.
B+
Bruce Hornsby (10) & the Noisemakers at Rose Music Center at the Heights, Huber Heights, Ohio, July 16 - Though the Rose's sound system was typically muddy and Hornsby and company seemed to be at about 88 percent of their capability, they shouldn't have been opening for Amos Lee, whose mix of soulless soul and funk that wasn't funky caused dozens of Hornsby partisans - Sound Bites included - to bail after four songs.
Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band (3) at Nationwide Arena, Columbus, Ohio, Jan. 19 - The show came 18 months after back issues forced a last-minute postponement of his previously scheduled Columbus show - and eventually, his entire 2017 tour. And though Seger was noticeably less powerful than he was during his 2015 visit, he was also was visibly happy to be performing on what he says will be his final outing.
Mark Lanegan Band at MAPFRE Stadium, Columbus, Ohio, May 18 - Sound Bites ducked in and out of Sonic Temple Day 2 to see Lanegan after scoring a $1 dollar ticket. A $25 parking spot and a bottle of water priced at $5.50 negated some of the value, but Lanegan’s nine-song set was worth every dollar and every hassle to get inside the sold-out soccer stadium for his 35 minutes of stage time.
B
Bob Weir and Wolf Bros at Taft Theatre, Cincinnati, Ohio, March 6 - This Bob Weir and Wolf Bros performance is best described as a solid, Weir-led Grateful Dead spin-off show that was more successful than RatDog in its later years, but much less exciting than Bob Weir & the Campfire Band.
Rory Block and Cindy Cashdollar at Jorma Kaukonen's Fur Peace Ranch, Pomeroy, Ohio, Oct. 19 - A show that reached its apex - and potential - late.
B-
The Richie Furay (2) Band at Jorma Kaukonen's Fur Peace Ranch, Pomeroy, Ohio, Aug. 10 - With his voice in sick bay, Furay didn't even attempt his signature songs, "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing," which would have seemed too ironic, and "Kind Woman," which he couldn't have pulled off in his diminished state.
Funky Feat at Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch, Pomeroy, Ohio, June 16 - Ultimately, Funky Feat provided an opportunity for Little Feat fans to hear the music they love played by some of those who made it - and that makes the group a worthwhile endeavor. But folks unfamiliar with Feat’s music should turn to the original recordings for their primary education.
Experience Hendrix at Taft Theatre, Cincinnati, Ohio, March 17 - There's no shame in being unable to play like Hendrix. And most of the performers were unable to muster what was needed to make covering him for more than 180 minutes worthwhile. But the exceptions - including Zakk Wylde, Eric Johnson, Mark Nanji and Doyle Bramhall II - were exceptional.
Martin Barre (3) at Athenaeum Theatre, Columbus, Ohio, May 8 - Narrated by a disembodied voice that was piped in every few songs to tell the story of Jethro Tull's evolution, the concert was a little too contrived for its own good.
C+
Elizabeth Cook (4) and Will Hoge at Natalie's Coal Fired Pizza & Live Music, Worthington, Ohio, Oct. 30 - Each performer played 50 minutes; too long for Hoge and too short for Cook, who seemed like she wanted to be anywhere but on stage.
C
Blues Traveler at Columbus Commons, Columbus, Ohio, May 17 - The free concert had its moments. And the tickets were worth every penny.

Design: MAD Architects
Location: Jiaxing, northern Zhejiang province, China
An Embrace of the City – MAD Architects Releases the Design of the Jiaxing Civic Center
MAD Architects, led by Ma Yansong, has released their design for the Jiaxing Civic Center. The scheme marks the latest important public project in Jiaxing City designed by MAD, after their design for the Jiaxing Train Station was unveiled earlier this year.
Holding elegant river views and lush vegetation, the Jiaxing Civic Center is situated along the city’s central axis. The project holds a prominent position; adjacent to the South Lake, a historic lake in the South of Jiaxing, and the Central Park, the largest park in the city. The site also lies next to the Haiyan river channel that connects the two cities of Jiaxing and Haiyan. Spanning approximately 130,000 square meters, the site contains three venues: the Science and Technology Museum, the Women and Children Activity Center, and the Youth Activity Center, forming a total construction area of 180,000 square meters and a site footprint of 72,000 square meters.
“A civic center, first and foremost, must be a place that attracts people; a place where children, youth, seniors, and families are willing to come together on a daily and weekly basis. We have created an undulating ring to serve as a garden-like living room for the city: an embrace.” — Ma Yansong
For the Jiaxing Civic Center, MAD has designed an artistic entity on an urban scale; where architectural forms and landscapes fuse together. With a large circular lawn as the centerpiece, the project is one where both people and buildings can interact and share; forming a more open, intimate, dynamic new urban space.
The center’s three venues are linked together “hand in hand,” enclosed by a circular roof to form a single entity. The organic flow of the lines throughout the project echoes the softness and grace of the ancient canal towns lining the southern banks of the Yangtze River in Eastern China. The central circular lawn that anchors the buildings allows for the large architectural volumes to dissipate and dissolve into the landscape.
Adjacent to the South Lake, the waterfront building sits within the central park, covered with locally produced white ceramic panels. The panels respond to the traditional barrel tile roofs of the local village, while also enhancing the scheme’s economic and energy efficiency. Meanwhile, the project’s floating roof forms a continuous skyline, like a tarp blown by the wind, bringing a soft sense of wrapping to the form. Whether you are on the central lawn, outside the park, or on the building’s links and pathways, the scenery seems to change with your movement.
To maintain the cohesiveness of a single entity, the three venues serving exhibition, education, and amenity functions are all coherently arranged under the curvaceous roof, naturally forming an interdependent group with a flowing line of movement. The spaces for exhibition, theater, education, activity, entertainment, and other uses are organically weaved together to complement one another. By avoiding the wasteful duplication of service spaces, the design offers more space for people and nature, and enhances the building’s energy-saving attributes.
The 6,000-square-meter lawn becomes a new type of urban public space, where every citizen can gather, rest and play, in addition to participating in a variety of activities or visiting exhibitions.
The first floor of the center has connections to the surrounding environment on all sides, through bordering the municipal traffic and wider landscape, or connecting the central lawn with the parklands on the periphery of the building. This semi-open, semi-private space can be used in a variety of ways, whether for daily activities, or as an open-air plaza for large urban cultural events. In addition to the central green space, the scheme contains additional open and intimate spaces connecting people to the outdoors, and to nature.
Among these, the terrace on the second floor of the site creates a 350-meter-long landscape corridor and running path. The public can climb towards the track from the central green space to walk or exercise, or visit the amphitheater and sunken plaza on the east side, before wandering into the parkland forest beyond the center to enjoy the wilderness.
The original trees on the site that have grown to an impressive age are preserved as much as possible, informing the design of the landscape to form a new natural park. In the middle of the green forest are winding paths and passages through the enclosed buildings, where one can walk through the trees and enjoy the riverfront view.
A cascading terrace, facing the central lawn in the interior of the building, acts in a dialogue with the white curved roof. The elements interlock and overlap into multiple semi-outdoor spaces, separated by minimalist floor-to-ceiling glass, blurring the interior and exterior. This is an urban public space for citizens to gather; a fresh, pure land for people to wash away the city’s complex clutter.
Jiaxing has a unique historical status in China. The vision for MAD’s scheme, embracing innovation, coherence, environmental friendliness, openness, and co-sharing, resonates with the historical heritage of this city, making this municipal public building a place that enhances the citizens’ sense of belonging and happiness.
By exploring the relationship between the city, nature, and humanities, MAD aims to create an urban space that is accessible to all, offering natural, equal, and friendly open spaces to everyone in the city. Here, architecture allows citizens to envision a spiritual blueprint of their ideal life in the fast-paced world, and to gain a sense of the promising future to be created through the positive development of the city.
Jiaxing Civic Center has completed its bidding for engineering procurement construction, and is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.
