Sinéad O'Connor Dead at 56
- “I hope there’s peace for Sinéad at last,” Jason Isbell says
Sinéad O’Connor, the Irish singer most famous for her recording of a Prince song and for ripping a photo of the pope on “Saturday Night Live,” has died at 56.
O’Connor’s family announced her death to Irish media without giving the date or cause.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad,” the statement says. “Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”
“This is such a tragedy,” Melissa Etheridge tweeted. “What a loss. She was haunted all her life. What a talent.”
“I hope there’s peace for Sinéad at last,” Jason Isbell tweeted.
O’Connor released 10 LPs and an EP between 1987 and 2014.
“I’m wishing Sinéad O’Connor safe travels through the astral world … what a voice,” Valerie June wrote on social media.
She had her biggest hit in 1990 with Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” and gained notoriety in 1992 after tearing a photo of John Paul II on “Saturday Night Live.”
That protest against child abuse in the church was immortalized in Todd Snider’s “Alright Guy” and made a fan of Queensrÿche’s Todd La Torre.
“RIP to this talented person,” the singer wrote on Facebook. “I always admired her stance and her means of protest against the child abuse being protected by the Catholic Church.”

Also if you listen to a Billy Joel song and think "this kinda sounds like [other musician]" 9 times out of 10 he was doing that on purpose, he's always like "I don't want to sound like me" and he also originally wanted to be a songwriter and wrote music with other artists in mind so that's especially apparent on the early albums. He did write a couple songs with Dylan in mind even though he was like "Dylan would never have covered it he writes his own stuff" lol.
dude that’s so cool , i love when artist kinda take stuff from each other it makes things so much better imo ! but yeah when i was listening to say goodbye to hollywood i was like this is literally the beginning to be my baby 😭 but it was cool i love it when songs do that

Song Review: Todd Snider and Keith Sykes - “Angel from Montgomery” (Live, June 3, 2023)
Heartfelt and swaddled in blues, Todd Snider and Keith Sykes’ version of “Angel from Montgomery” pays proper respect to John Prine while illuminating the song’s inherent elasticity.
With Snider playing acoustic and singing with the pretend-aloofness of his Blind Lemon Pledge persona, Sykes’ harmonica and harmonies and electric guitar and rhythm section behind them, the pair make the old song new and take nothing away from the composition in the process.
Recorded June 3 during “a three-hour, unrehearsed jam session … in Memphis,” the track previews a larger film project whose details will come later.
Snider has taken most of 2023 off from performance. This “Angel from Montgomery” proves the rest has served him well and left him with zero rust.
