a senior that always gets mistaken as a freshman </3 sophomore at best

got adopted by the sophomores and juniors back in freshman year and hung out with them predominantly until they all graduated leaving him behind to suffer

has gotten into fights before cuz man indirectly pisses people off - won all of them since he knows when he can’t take someone on - man’s a short king

him and the other boys in the friend group jumped a few people for making negative remarks about the girls

the kid always in the back that’s in their own world and that you’re 90% sure is on something half the time

surprisingly amazing in group projects - always gets his assigned work done days before the set deadline

not necessarily sporty but when it comes to gym and picking teams he’s normally picked first due to how he’s unintentionally a menace how fast he is

plays the flute and is in art club

however he always got frustrated because of whenever they were supposed to work with paint or clay it always ended up on his clothes

wears artist gloves all the time which shows off his black nails with his ring fingers painted teal

has the most stable hands ever known to man - there’s a reason why his iconic eyeliner’s always on fleek

wears headphones instead of earbuds

got made fun of for being short in middle school so he wears shoes with platforms

speaking of teal, he dyed it himself bleach and all.

My Review:

As much as I wanted to enjoy this book (for multiple reasons), I just didn't, for multiple reasons. I wanted to like it because I enjoy stories about black people, black culture, and black love but, this was not that.

The first thing I couldn't get past was the writing style of the author. I have not read any other Zariah L. Banks novels but, if this story is any indication of her writing style, I would have to respectfully not engage. Of all the highlights and annotations I did in this book, 99.9% of them were surrounding her use of certain words and her writing style. Here are a few words I had questions about:

"Dead-ass facts" -- New York City people, isn't "deadass" and "facts" the same in this context? Like redundant? Get back to me.

"I'm not gon' cap." -- Do twenty-somethings speak like this? I wouldn't know, I'm a thirty-something. Let me know.

"On fleek" -- Is this still a thing?

"Gully" -- pretty sure this is a 90s thing.

"Respeck" -- Just. Make. It. Stop

Then, there are the awfully written sex scenes. THRASHING. JOYSTICK. YONI. APRIL. SLIPPERY FOLDS. ROOFTOP. Literally, nothing about the writing of the sex scenes was appealing. Every word made me cringe.

Number Three. Patience is immature, emotionally inept, and so far from self-aware. She admitted to taking a backseat to her ex while propping him up and forgetting about her own needs. Then leaves that situationship for another, with no time in between to figure out herself. That bothered me. Patience needs therapy badly but instead, the people in her life just overlook her bad behavior, Lennox included.

My Final Thoughts: Don't read this if you don't have to.

Things I have done for this fic so far:

Watched a video of the commencement ceremony for the LBCC class 2017 so I could use an accurate quote from the valedictorian speech

Spent 4 hours figuring out which classes Buck would take, and how they'd work with his schedule, and what he would need to do in-between in order to make the timeline work. Proceeded to barely mention the classes at all.

Found the names of a real bar and a real café that made logical geographical sense for Buck to work at

Looked up weather maps of Peru

Researched bartending licences and schools and how long they take in different states only to basically disregard all of that info

Wrote out a timeline of everywhere Buck has travelled between when he left Hershey up til canon

Gotten closer to writing smut than I ever have before
