Tbh, I hate the series (what a surprise), but I always think this has got a lot of potential, so...

Let's just make a rewrite fanfic.

To conclude this season 3 in style, I'm breaking one of my personal rules to go back to my roots with the narrative disaster that inspired me to make videos : "High Guardian Spice" !

Here you'll find some basics on how the school and magic systems work in my rewrite.

My version of Rosemary would be particularly daredevil and seemingly being full of energy at all times. To the point of charging headlong into trouble. It's not that she doesn't think about her safety, it's mainly that she wants to get her qualifications and become a Guardian as quickly as possible. Because Guardians have special privileges that allow them to go into unexplored and/or forbidden territories. She therefore wants to get her qualifications so that she can go search her mother, who disappeared after saving a village from a manticore corrupted by the Rot. As the series progresses, she'd question the reasons for her commitment and her mother's legacy, until she discovers a sincere vocation to protect others.

In my rewrite, the Way of the Runes (Old Magic) is starting to become almost obsolete compared to the rise of the Way of the Arcanes (New Magic). Sage's parents, who are quite conservative, consider terraspheres unnatural and have raised their daughter in ignorance and contempt for the Way of the Arcanes (think how Mormon and Jehovah Witnesses kids are raised). Even in the face of her insistence on going to the capital with Rosemary. But by learning more about this "unholy" practice, Sage would realize the cult-like lie she was raised in and would work to expand her horizons by learning other forms of magic.

In my rewrite, Parsley would remain the eldest of a large and fairly poor family (but only 5 kids, let's not exagerate). She would therefore be used to bending over backwards to help others, to the point of sometimes neglecting her own health. While she just wanted to join the Academy to build a reputation that would bring customers to the family forge, she'd discover herself an interest in mechanics and automatons. And one thing leading to another, she'd end up realizing that she has the right to be selfish sometimes.

In my rewrite, Thyme would be one of the many elven refugees after the Rot's sudden appearance in the Enchanted Woods. Her father is among the missing people, and she becomes more anxious every day she doesn't hear from him. But she hides all this behind the exterior of a no-nonsense untouchable and independant woman. Until the rest of the group helps her accept her vulnerability.

I swear to god I haven’t watched the show and immediately it’s made me want to make it better then how it was written.

This one isn’t an actual redraw, I did it out of boredom. So enjoy this one too I guess. 👍

So I like thinking about franchises that disappointed me in some way

and after watching too many reviews I redesigned the High guardian spice characters (and thought of how the plot could work way too much)

Rose in this version isn't a complete idiot, and may not be so book smart, but she is very good in combat because she's kind of a fangirl. Like, "she studies attacks and can probably name pretty much every guardian" fangirling. While she is still kind of a dumbass, she's the one that always brings Sage down to earth whenever she gets too stressed. Although she is mostly the source of that stress. Her mom was taken by the rot, but she isn't really sure what it is, so when Thyme mentions it devastating her home she's like "!" so they can actually have something that might bring them together. She decides to take on forging and weapon enchantments so she can have a moment where she steps out of her mom's shadow to do her own thing teehee Sage here is still kind of an ass (her sexist discourse to snap was NOT a Girlboss Moment) but here I think it would be interesting if it was something that other characters think its weird too. Like its a belief ingrained into her together with the more traditional upbringing by her family (thus her only knowing old magic) so it can be part of her character development learning how those thoughts should be changed and that not everyone thinks like that, But she still tries her best to be respectful and kind. (also, her parents sent her to the academy because new magic is VERY new, so the fact that it was being implemented in the curriculum was not widespread, specially in a small town like where she was raised in.) she's an overthinker to the core, so sometimes she needs her friends to calm her down, although sometimes that anxiety is what prepares them for something they weren't even expecting.

Parsley is honestly well written enough in the original show, so the only things I would change is that the progress with the conflict with her parents is stretched a little through episodes, and the conflict is that while her parents want her to be a blacksmith and take on the family business (and help take care of her three thousand simblings) she wishes to go out and do something for herself as a warrior, because she wanting to go to school to become a blacksmith and her parents fighting her on it because they want her to become a blacksmith is kinda dumb. also her short ass hammer feels so weird to watch in the series, so I think that a longer handle would make it a little better. also tiny irony of her weapon being taller than her. Thyme feels like she should be written better because shes the only one that actually has any correlation to the plot, but she kind of... isn't?? I like her backstory of being ran out of the woods she lived in because the rot was devastating it and her dad staying behind to try to solve it, but I think it would be more dramatic if her dad was killed in the conflict but she doesn't know so dramatic moment when she finds something that belonged to him (maybe a little charm she made? for protection? in the way children do that stuff for their parents) and she connects the dots. Also the rot here is because the overuse of the power new magic is able to draw out without the control of old magic is taking too much energy from the earth, and woodsy areas thrive on it, thus the root like structures of the rot. The trees are basically oysters for the magic energy of the world. When its bad, they turn bad too. Also make her more of a "expresses affection through favors and actions, not words" person. She, Rose and Sage took wayy too long to become friends. Amaryllis stays the same because she is perfect and I love her and if you disagree to talk to the wall I personally think Snapdragon is good too but I would make him genderfluid instead. I think that the idea of Caraway THINKING he might be a trans girl but that ending up not the correct answer would reinforce his "there's always more options than you think" speech. And someone needs to point out how he's drawn to women that scream at him. Also we need a better arc with his dad instead of the raw carrot that was the canonical "his dad reinforces toxic masculinity hurr durr" thing we got (that wasn't even well made btw) NOW TO THE SIDIES

Slime boy is now named Slime boy because of an accident he had in potions class the previous year (he's one year older than the main cast) which caused him to continuously produce a slime like substance instead of stuff like spit and sweat. It doesn't inconvenience him a lot other than him making bubbles when he speaks every now and then. He's just an assistant in the terrasphere shop, and the owners are Alloe and Anise (wow they actually do something else in the story!!) but he's mainly just a more experienced student that sometimes knows things the main cast doesn't like secret entrances and cool rooms and stuff. He's a full on bard because that was barely explored in canon and music based attacks are cool. He has the tiniest little crush on parnelle cuz I thought that would be fun Parnelle is ENBY because I SAID SO (and cuz cal is stablished as transphobic and I like payoffs) and since whatever they're doing at the academy is never really clarified, I made them kind of an animal whisperer, like they call on animals to assist them in battle and other stuff. (Maybe then we actually get to see the trixies again after their prolongued mating dance that lead to literally nothing in episode 1) being an animal whisperer is a very rare "old magic" hability thus why they entered the academy one year earlier than expected. They sew their own clothes and are still the generally weird little guy they are in canon, except this time its explained as them preferring to communicate with animals ever since they were a child. They are still very polite and friendly tho, always happy to help. Cal is (his full name is calamagrostis and like if I was named that I'd be an asshole too) still parnelle's cousin, but he doesn't outright bullies them. in fact, he isn't an outright bully, he just tends to look down on other people that don't follow what he believes in, which is a more traditional view on the world, kind of like sage, so I thought of him maybe being a catalyst to her being like "wow I can see why my way of thinking may be bad now, I don't want to be like him" which pushes her to grow and stuff. And I want him to grow as well, so I thought, maybe he and Snapdragon used to be friends, but recently they drifted apart and he started to kind of resent him after he came out as genderfluid, but deep down he still misses his friend, so maybe that pushes his character development. And other people saying that hes kind of a prick. idk I just really hate the trope of a bully character just being there to be the mc's punching bag instead of getting development.

In general, the lore would be (I think, I'm not the best at lore) that Guardians are generally like soldiers, but in a more captain america type of way. they're more like beacons of hope and symbols or power and peace than soldiers are, (thus rosemary knowing a bunch of them as they're usually famous) but they are still required to know combat. High Guardian Academy is known as a guarantee to become a good soldier, and a high chance to become a guardian. They VERY recently implemented new magic in the curriculum, but are experimenting with mixing its high power output with old magic's control of it, (thus why caraway knows how but why none of the students are being thaught it. It's a fairly new tecnique they'd rather get a good grasp on before teaching a bunch of children how to use it) because since they're expertly trained guardians they can tell that a terrasphere takes too much energy above what would be considered okay. They just aren't aware of how much tho, the extent of the rot is a secret held close to their chests by witch country, which is where the terraspheres come from, which has brought them tons of profit and advancements. So when someone knows about the extent, or tries to stop it, they are eliminated, (thus why thyme's dad died. People that stayed in the fairy woods and knew how bad new magic could be were all "silenced" so they could keep profiting out of it.) (Any letters or research about the rot, or from the people that knew, were burned and interfered with, thats why no one else knew about it.) idk what else to talk about cuz this show had such little things to explore but there's so much filler that almost none of it got explored but I think it had potential, even if I prefer to focus on character interactions and how they change eachother. Again, I'm not very good with lore. and plot.

I think i had a little hard time to come up with a nice backstory. Hard but not impossible.

First of all, i’m so proud of her muscle and her chubby form! Anyway.

As i lay on my bed to sleep, i had a sudden urge to write down my idea.

"Parsley is so nice and she is always cheering me up !"

Parsley, coming from a big family as her the elder, always held the role of the "big sister" for everyone. She got used to it. No matter how she felt, she needed to keep her smile to cheer up everyone. She was the one that stays calm during the most stressful situation. You can ALWAYS count on her to help you out! :)

But... something inside her continue to grow bigger each day. Confuse abou this unknown feeling, she hides as much as she could. But as we all know, the more you try to hide it, the more it became visible. And one day...

"How tiresome..." she signs in annoyance as her smile drops. Her eyes, always shining were as cold as ice.

Her friend standing next to her flinchs at the view. What was that? The friend looked Parsley’s face from the side as she stared at the enemy causing trouble in front of them.

In Parsley’s mind, it was a mess:

'The enemy came in such a bad mood. Why everything kept getting like this ? Does helping’s not enough ? It’s pissing me off.'

Anger.

Parsley was angry for the first time in a long time. Her heart was like fire inside her chest. She wanted to get it off.

Her hand gripped tightly her weapon as she glared as she glared at the enemy.

" [Friend], go call the others. I’m going to spare you some time."

"B-but..."

"Now."

Friends flinched at the order. Then turn around to run away from her, doing as they were told.

Parsley stood alone, and the enemy finally realize her existence. She smiles in a sadistic way as veins were visible on her forehead.

"You. You are going to be a nice punching ball."

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS IN THE CASE OF VISUAL ISSUES

ROSEMARY

- 14

- Carefree, reckless and absent-minded, but good at heart.

- Daughter of the late warrior, Lavender Thalya

- Raised by her father growing up after her mom seemingly died in battle during her infancy mere months after her birth

- Idolizes her mother and dreams to become a hero like her (problem is, Rose is bad at it)

- Grew up in Lyngarth City's outer urban town of Scarborough Grove,

never visiting the inner city before attending it's local high school

- Freshman at High Guardian Academy alongside childhood friend Sage.

- After hearing rumors of a criminal syndicate called "The Triumvirate"

Rose is motivated to train at school and become a guardian to defend the city.

- Armed with whatever rusted remains was left of Lavender after what

was found of her body, including her mother's sword: The Rosemary Bloom (AKA her namesake)

- Tries to see the good in everyone as she wants to follow what was

told of Lavender's values.

- Trains with Parsley to learn from her and vice-versa

SAGE:

- Very calm and down-to-earth yet shy. Interested in the concepts of nature, space, stars, and time.

- Daughter of The Melanox family, two local magic-wielding healers

- Has an older cousin who is currently married to an elf, living in Lyngarth

- Wears hand-me-downs (hence the baggy sweater and skirt)

- Carved her staff with her father at ten years old as a test,

- Met Rosemary in preschool and grew up with her.

- Encouraged by her parents to become a guardian after hearing concerns

about a "rot" seeping from parts of the outer city into Scarborough Grove

- Trying to be more than a healer by using magic for defense

- Proving a point to her parents that "new magic" (magic based on technology powered from mined resources) can work together with "old magic" (magic drawn from individual's natural energy)

- The Parents send Sage to the academy not knowing they restricted their magic system to ONLY "new magic" in their current term (when initially both co-existed)

- Places a Terasphere (new magic device) into a childhood nightlight

in an attempt to combine the two magic systems

- Comforts Thyme with her personal issues around her home, as the witch

understands what the beauty of nature is ( using her knowledge as a magic-born to console the woodland nymph

PARSLEY

- 15

- Smug, smart, and kind at heart

- Born and raised with 12 brothers as the eldest child.

- Lives in a weapon and auto repair store managed by her family for generations

- Stressed under the pressure of taking care of not just her siblings, but

also helping with her mother's bakery and her father's repair shop

- Meets the Rose and Sage at HGA after Rose accidentally breaks The Rosemary Bloom's blade clean off the hilt. Takes the two to her family's shop for welding.

- Shocked when realizing Rose is a daughter of a late Champion Guardian

- Teaches the two newbies at combat despite her size.

- Very skilled at sledgehammer combat using a weapon crafted from spares laying around the shop

- Has a rivalry against the more stern Thyme due to the woodlander's

arrogance at first, before warming up to her.

- Learned to be resourceful based on old articles on Lavender on her

saying how guardians take what they need from their environment

(hence the hammer)

THYME

- 16

- Harsh, noble, stoic, serious, loyal, and sarcastic

- A woodland elf nymph born into the Evergreen Clan of the outer forests of Sidhe Woodlands, a scared land home to magic plant and mineral resources

- Raised to protect the place from invaders alongside other nymphs of her age with a crossbow. being cocky in being the best.

- Lost her parents at 12 due to an attack by a group called " The Triumvurate" In which they used their magic to spread a rot throughout the forest.

- With most of her fellow archers having too fallen, the was exiled and lived in isolation on her own

- Lived solo after travelling before finding Lyngarth City, trying to live in the grimey slums adopted by a light elf and her punk wife.

- Found the other three after their first week at HGA when they tried to explore the city's more undesirable areas to find monsters or crooks to fight.

- Ends up befriending the three she find and sees them as amateurs' at first, but sees

them as an opportunity to grow to not repeat history.

- Secretive about her past and her injuries to hopefully keep their trust

AMARYLLIS

- 15

- A Hydrotiera from the seaside city of Alchemist Bay

- Rich and spoiled witch born to the divorced CEO of a ship/trade empire

- Entitled and snarky (but looks out for her best friend)

- Has a bone to pick with Rose and Sage due to her status

- Born without an right arm, provided a prosthetic that doubles as a spell caster

- Uses her arm (New Magic Tech) to power an "Anchor Axe" from her natural 'Old Magic" energy

- Acts self absorbed to cover up on how little attention her father gave Amarylis in her teens

- Sees Snapdragon as her closest friend for they both share family issues

- Respects the main 4 over time on the grounds of her dad being a potential target of The Triumvirate.

SNAPDRAGON

- 15

- Effeminate Male Drakonican, rough with a soft interior

- Stern and agile, but also elegant and delicate

- Born into a family of brutish warriors pressuring them to be rough

- Believes in freedom of expression. Anyone can be strong and brave without being rough and brash in the name of "heroism", while also staying elegant and clean.

- Trains to be a swordsman in High Guardian Academy to prove their parents that idea

- Sees Amaryllis as their best friend for having parental issues.

- Follows Amaryllis' lead in treating Rose and Sage. Would later form a friendship with both, with the latter seeing Snap's skills as inspiration for keeping calm

- Trains Rose on occasion after their rivalry became null and void.

- Find's Sage's simple and strict parents similar to their own

PARNELL

- 10

- Scholarly, curious, overambitious, and naïve

- Descendant of a family of famous historians in Lyngarth City

- Advanced through grades fast due to his intellect

- Befriends Rose and Amaryllis due to their families history

- Often bullied by Aster

- Top and youngest student in High Guardian Academy

- Hates people who underestimate him due to his age

SLIME BOY:

- 14

- Oozalian orphan. Soft-speaking, nervous, shy.

- Abandoned by his creator years ago, adopted by a local bard running a potions shop

- Uses random instrument parts to make up his humanoid body, including a

"New Magic" infused radio under his scarf (albeit with garbled speech)

- Named "Slime Boy" by the adoptive father ( he wasn't sure on what to call the creature but the monster child ran with it, for it sounded right enough lmao)

- Learns music to become like his adoptive father, and to defend himself

- Attends HGA for finding not just knowledge on bard magic, but also what he is exactly and where he came from.

- Thyme and Parsley find SB to be dumb at first, but learn from his easygoing approach to things.

- The fist and ONLY one of his kind to attend HGA

YOU THOUGHT IT WAS HAZBIN HOTEL REDESIGNS PART 2, BUT IT WAS I, HIGH GUARDIAN SPICE.

Honestly what is left to say of this pile of stinky doo doo garbage.

TBH, I did these on a whim because I was looking at YouTube in December about this show and tried re-watching a few reviews of this out of boredom.

But after remembering my old redesigns that I made back in 2022 (which I think I posted to the HGS subreddit) and me getting a new book about professional character design, I figured I should take a stab at doing these designs again.

Other than the mediocre character design, lackluster animation, and subpar writing I think the biggest issue about HGS is that it lacks any charm of it's own. I felt it was so focused on trying to be like other cartoons of its era that it failed to forge it's own identity out the gate.

When it came to HOW I should redesign these things, even three years ago, I wanted to make the show set within a modern and urban fantasy setting (think some mix of Onward, Nimona, Arcane, and The Legend of Korra). Case in point, the show's aesthetics ranged from being too archaic or too modern in terms of outfits, so mixing the two would not only make it stand out from other shows in the genre.

So instead of High Guardian Academy being another bootleg Hogwarts, I thought of the AU version being this art deco-inspired classy junior-senior public high school....with the chaos of IRL high school. Modern stuff like vehicles and tech do exist though I imagine they're either intricately detailed to fit the vibe, or magic powered.

There's some elaboration on how I re-did the magic system a bit (Old Magic being archaic and harnessed from humanoid users, and New Magic coming from mined resources powering technology to give regular people powers) but I'm tired.
